I have hi-res print files available on my website now! for FREEEEEEEEE 🎊🎊🎊
I'm tired of monetizing and advertising and capitalizing and.... everything, honestly. you can still buy gallery-quality giclée prints of my work on INPRNT if you want those - but now you can also just download these and print them someplace local!
there's only a couple Celestial artworks available for now, but I'll be adding more later... and potentially some VR art files in the future as well ✌

This is a meta on Our Flag Means Death episode 5: The Best Revenge Is Dressing Well, Sir Godfrey Thornrose, The scene where he calls Ed a donkey, and so called "race science."
It has come to my attention that some of you apparently do not know what a phrenologist is.
*a note: I'm going to for the purposes of this assume that the guy played by Jeff Lorch is sir Godfrey Thornrose, I do not know this for certain but in my opinion even if he is not Thornrose the same principles still apply to him for reasons I will discuss in this meta.
So lets recap the scenes I want to touch on. At the beginning of episode 5 Stede is teaching Ed how to identify rich people cutlery like they're Barney Thompson and Vivian Ward in pretty woman. Stede bitches at Thornrose for not having enough spoons for Stede's liking. Thornrose responds "My apologies, I hadn't imagined we'd be hosting your kind."
Ed responds "My kind, what kind"
to which Godfrey responds "A rich donkey is still a donkey."
Ed then proceeds to scream at him and then orders Fang to skin him with a snail fork before throwing him overboard. To which Fang presumably responds by either skinning him with a normal skinning implement or forgoing the skinning step and just throwing him overboard, because who tf has time to skin a man with a snail fork.
I've seen some dogshit takes on this scene. I've seen it treated as evidence that Ed is exceptionally violent or abusive or has mood swings or anger issues or whatever bullshit. And I... Do Not Agree. You'll see why.
The next scene I want us to have in our back pocket is the first couple scenes with Gabriel and Antionette. When Gabriel and Antionette introduce themselves to Ed and Stede they reveal that Sir Godfrey Thornrose is a quote "Master Phrenologist." Stede is then expected to study Antionette's head. When he does he introduces his fake craft as "Phrenology, which is the study of the human head." He then takes a wild guess as to Antionette's heritage based on her skull lumps.
Content warning for like real old school racism ahead.
The reason Stede goes for the heritage is because Phrenology is a pseudoscience closely linked to other contemporary race science of the time. It was the idea that bumps on your head, thought to be caused by the pressure of the brain, could be used to identify your personality traits.
Tumblr media
Phrenology gets really fucking racist, really fucking fast. Phrenology was used as proof that the white race was superior to other races, and as a justification for slavery and eugenics. Eugenics is the idea that you can improve society through breeding out "bad genes", which is almost universally popular among all types of racists, but the Nazis were big fans of it and there's a direct through line between the race scientists in the 1700s who were into phrenology and modern hate groups and neo nazis. I wanted to use an image here as an example of racist phrenology texts, but it's rough and I don't want to make a cut so I'm just going to link to the wordpress anthropology article I found the picture in, it's sourced and an alright place to start if you're into further reading.
With this information, I would like to use another example, that is relevant to the ethnicities in contention. A French physician who attracted huge crowds with his phrenology lectures, François-Joseph-Victor Broussais, once claimed that Maori people (as well as indigenous Australians) could never become civilized since he claimed they had no cerebral organ for producing great artists.
This is the context in which we need to understand the exchange between Ed and the French captain. I've seen some people claim it's about class and not about race, but Thornrose acknowledges Ed's wealth when he says a rich donkey is still a donkey. It doesn't matter to a man like Thornrose what Ed does or how rich he is or how well he can learn his fucking forks, he's still akin to an animal in this skull molesting freak's racist little mind. If a phrenologist, or even someone who's rubbing elbows with a phrenologist, calls a man of color a donkey they're clearly saying he's an uncivilized animal based on the shape of his face. That's how racists operate.
And Sir Godfrey Thornrose is not just any old racist, he's a racist spreading his ideology to other people, convincing them that people like Ed are inferior, that people like him should be subjugated by white people. He is clocking in for his shift at the racism factory creating more racists.
So basically what I'm saying is Ed should skin him, no quarter for genocidal maniacs. Basically I can tell you're either racist sympathetic or talking out of your ass if you think French captain was fucked up. It was antifascist direct action and I don't want to hear another word about it. I personally believe the only thing you can't come back from is death in terms of being a better person. I also believe that there are situations in which killing someone is more or less fine and you're never gonna catch me feeling bad for a fucking phrenologist when he compares an indigenous pirate to an animal and the pirate responds by doing what pirates do.
Killing Godfrey was based.

If you, like most of us, are beyond disappointed about tumblr's deal with midjourney to steal our art...
Give tumblr feedback through the service center
Contact tumblr's CEO on twitter
Contact tumblr's CEO through wordpress
The actual account to contact tumblr staff is @staf , but like others have stated, please be civil because the people who run this account are not responsible for the decision involving midjourney.
Good points to bring up:
Midjourney and OpenAI (and other ai image generation companies) are in the center of a legal controvery for violating copyright law and have both already been the subject of several lawsuits.
Midjourney's founder admitted to using "a hundred million" artworks without the consent of the artists who made them.
It is in violation of copyright law to have already allowed the scrapers to learn from all the art that has already been uploaded to tumblr because it was impossible to have gotten all the artist's consent, especially if the uploader has since deactivated their account or passed away.
That the ability to opt out of allowing ai scrapers to learn from your artwork is useless given the points listed above.
and
Both longtime and new users are deleting their accounts or now refusing to upload any more art due to their decision.
Many people who were going to make tumblr accounts are now no longer going to.
Artists will be sharing within each and every one of their communities to not use tumblr.
That any paymemt tumblr recieved due to the deal with midjourney will not be worth it given the points listed above, alongside whatever it may cost them when Midjourney and OpenAI, or even tumblr itself, get in even more legal trouble.
Good tags to follow:
#no ai art / #anti ai / #protect your art / #support human artists / artists rebel!
If somebody who is pro-ai comments, reblogs, or messages you about your stance, kindly just block them.
keep reblogging posts like this one or other ones you see to spread the request of action against tumblr's new ai policies.

Unlike In Memoriam pages in previous issues, Ken Kelly was not a famous comic book artist. Instead, he was a famous fantasy artist. Of course, the casual reader won’t know any of that from the information presented on this page. It’s just an image with a name and its up to the curious reader to do some digging on his own. (Heavy Metal #319 2022 – Page 2 In Honor of Ken Kelly)

besides sheezy, what sites would you recommend for art publishing and something more personal, like a blog?
it kinda depends on your intentions. for art publishing are you looking for smth casual or professional? in terms of a casual art site, sheezy is the only one i fw personally cuz it ticks off the boxes i look for in an art gallery site. theres others like artfol and inkblot, but i don't really like them because they function like insta/twit/social media For Artists ™️ to me.
for professional sites, i’ve heard of cara. i suppose it’s like artstation, but in retaliation of their dumb AI image generator rules. It looks like a nice portfolio site if you’re looking for work.
now when it comes to personal blogs, i’d always suggest making your own website. like i’d suggest neocities, wordpress, weebly etc. weebly is nice and beginner friendly because you don’t have to code. (although i would still learn HTML in general when it comes to website creation, but i digress lol) And then there’s blog sites like blogspot, tumblr, and dreamwidth (i think its more on the journaling/literature side cuz it’s an alternative to livejournal) and don’t forget about setting up RSS feeds and newsletters to keep your audience updated on your new posts.

I can't get on board with Threads. The sure amount of data-mining Threads does, along with the fact if you delete it you also delete your instragram account as well are instant bad vibes. Twitter might suck but a LOT of indie devs, small businesses and tons of artists relay on it. Having to pack up and try to get the same amount of attention on other social media sites isn't easy, livelihoods would be at risk if it does die.
Absolutely! Threads is just datamining.
But if it is drawing attention to the Fediverse, which has exactly zero datamining and zero ads, because it's not commercial and it's decentralised but connected, it's a good bridge for people still clinging to Twitter, to get off of Musks horrorshow.
The internet needs to go back to being publicly owned and non-commercial. If you are not the product (like you are on Twitter or anything Meta owns), you are independent.
The Fediverse has non-commercial alternatives for a lot of things: Lemmy for Reddit, Pixelfed for Instagram, Mastodon for Twitter, Peertube for YouTube, alternatives for Facebook or Wordpress, too. It's a decentralised internet but you can connect with everybody on any platform that uses the ActivityPub.
For example, people following me on Mastodon can also see, share, comment on my stuff on my Pixelfed-account or my bookreviews on Bookwyrm (the goodreads-alternative). As soon as Tumblr activates ActivityPub I will share my Tumblr-Posts as well. Or my Mastodon-posts on Tumblr. Whatever I want to.
So this whole decentralised web is a giant opportunity for small businesses to showcase their stuff to a very wide audience. But of course the big companies have not much interest in losing their advertisment-cattle to self-governed places, so there is a lot of marketing-fearmongering going on. It'll be hard to break this chokehold, but it is necessary, else small businesses and artists will be forever at the mercy of big money.
Also, the Fediverse is based on accessibility. It's made with disabled folks in mind - most people over at Mastodon use image descriptions, for example. Lots of space for queer folks, too. Plus - mostly European, so no "no nudity!!111"-religious-crap either! And the privacy-settings of the EU, that are much stricter than in the US.
Yes, I'm promoting this very hard, because I'm believing in the values of a free, accessible, anti-capitalist, non-religious internet. I want anarchy back. I don't want to be the milking cow of some corporations harvesting my data. The Fediverse has lots of risks, too. But they are minimal compared to putting your art, your thoughts, or - in case of a lot of transfolks - safety in the hand of some greedy billionaires.

Happy New Years! I will admit, it’s been quite an eventful year for me! I got to see the Gorillaz and Itzy live, I got to meet and hang out with a bunch of amazing people, and I found my love for art again. There were some challenging moments of the year but the good times made up for them. My theme for next year is to remind myself to take it easy and don’t stress out so much. What’s your theme…

Fun fact: This sort of thick outlined anime-esque artstyle is not my main artstyle. I think it is a valuable skill to be able to adapt or change one's artstyle to fit the themes and mood of the current project. I have different artstyles for my other projects (more realistic/highly symbolic source game inspired art, pixel art, smugged pencils).
This is not why the art style is so inconsistent or why the early art is bad, that's because I was bad at drawing when I drew those and also often didn't spend enough time on each piece. Nowadays, I can normally fully develop a new art style after just one or two art pieces.
(in retrospect, ROAMS would have benefited from a faster to draw lower detail art style).
*most of the "bad" art can be found somewhere on my webbed site, twitter, and veeery far down on my Tumblr if you really want to see it, but you don't. To find the NSFW you'll have to hack my computer because I'm keeping it all for myself like an avaricious dragon

How do I become a featured artist on Artist Alley?
It’s easy! Just send over an image of your art and a link to your storefront to Artist Alley’s submission box to be considered. Selected artists will be contacted via email. Please include your email address if you want us to contact you at an email address other than the one associated with your Tumblr account. The submissions box only gathers information and will not be made public.
What kind of artwork is Artist Alley looking for?
Anything. Anything! Anything weird, original, funny, cute, strange, beautiful, precious, furry, glittery, oozy, slimy, bubbly, metallic, silky, or fun. Anything! This is your chance to show off what you do best. It just has to be something you created, and it has to adhere to our Community Guidelines. Also, no live frogs. Not again. Not like last time. We can’t go through that again.
Does Tumblr take a cut of the profits?
Tumblr does not take a cut of any purchase of original art from a featured artist’s storefront. When we feature your art, we link directly to your storefront.
What kind of storefront do I need?
You can link to any digital storefront that uses a secure online payment processing system. Some examples of this include WooCommerce, Etsy, Redbubble, Ravelry, or Society6.
What if I don’t have a storefront?
Not a problem, bud. WooCommerce is here for all of your storefront needs. WooCommerce is a customizable, open-source eCommerce platform built on WordPress. They offer a flexible and secure payment system, allow you to manage orders on the go with their iOS and Android mobile apps, and have so many customization options. If you have a WordPress site, setting up your storefront will only take a few minutes. They walk you through everything in their New Store Owner Guide.
…What happened to the frogs?
It’s fine, don’t worry about it. Everything is fine.

WC: STRANGE TALES #121
It must have been becoming clear to editor Stan Lee that the quirky back-up strip that he’d let artist Steve Ditko introduce was growing in popularity among the readership. So while it would still be several months before Doctor Strange would headline a STRANGE TALES cover all on his own, he had gone from carrying a burst blurb to a small vignette to occupying a third of the image area, squeezing…
