This neutron star inhabits what is called a binary system, in an orbit with another star. The neutron star is a kind dubbed a "black widow," named in honor of female black widow spiders that eat their male partners after mating. It apparently was born with the usual mass of a neutron star, about 1.4 times that of our sun, but its gravitational pull poached material from its companion star, enabling it to grow to a mass seemingly at the uppermost limit before physics would dictate a collapse into a black hole, the densest of all known objects. Its companion star has been stripped almost bare, losing perhaps 98% of its mass to the black widow, leaving it at about 20 times the mass of our solar system's largest planet Jupiter — a far cry for its original size. "It has swallowed nearly a full sun's worth of mass without yet becoming a black hole. So it should be just on the edge of black hole collapse," Mr. Romani said. These Merging Black Holes Have Been Discovered! This pair of black holes is known as “GW190521”, and they are slowly merging together to form a supermassive black hole! This pair of black holes lie approximately 17,000 million light years away, and was discovered by gravitational wave signals. If you are unfamiliar with black holes, allow me to explain: a black hole is a region in space where nothing can escape from it, not even light. A black hole forms when a massive star explodes in an event known as a supernova . . . #outerspacemag #outerspacestore #NGC6888 #crescentnebula #nebula #universetoday #OPTeam #ASIweek #natgeospace #apod #space #astrophotography #astronomy #cosmology #astronomyfacts #spirituality #stargazing #universe #telescope #astro #astronomer #astrophysics #elonmusk #spacepicture #spacex #nasa #nebula #universetoday #OPTeam #ASIweek #ZWOasi #astronomypicturesdaily #photography #natgeospace #apod #space #astrophotography #astronomy #cosmology #astronomyfacts #spirituality #stargazing #universe #telescope #astro #astronomer #astrophysics #elonmusk #spacepicture #spacex #nasa view all 106 comments https://www.instagram.com/p/CdupwH3pQQr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I believe there are four experiences that regularly redirect the course of life for people positively. These four things each have the power to change our perspective of what’s possible in the World around us.The first two, Photography and Astronomy have affected me most deeply, and forever changed the course of my life. In different ways they both address Time, and it’s uncontested power over the entire Universe..., except for the Photographer who can stop time forever capturing a moment, and the Astronomer who can glance at will back through the Universe’s histories as far back as the Big Bang. The third life changing experience I believe to be acts of service. Service to those around you can transcend bias and experiential prejudice and connect an individual to a greater purpose. Those deeply affected by this are often the people you know who identify with volunteering, caregiving, or even who professionally commit themselves to trades like medicine or nonprofit organizations. The last is the Arts, both visual and musical. How many have picked up a paintbrush only to realize that painting is part of their identity every moment thereafter? The same is true of any musical instrument. We all know someone who doesn’t just hear or see art or music, but lives it and feels it deeper than the rest of us can understand. As humans, we crave connection and these tools each have the power to bring us closer to our Universe and to each other.Have a great week everyone! Looking forward to seeing those of you coming to my talks this week. 👊California Nebula shot with a 17” Telescope.”.credit: @gibsonpics.C’monBoard Astronomy brings together the best photographs of space. Cyclic universes Put forth by Albert Einstein in 1931, the theory suggests that prior to the Big Bang, there was another universe that existed. This universe expanded, then contracted into what is called a "big crunch," and its contraction led to the Big Bang that created our universe . . What's your view on this? . The Pelican Nebula (IC 5070). This is a hydrogen gas cloud in the constellation Cygnus that lies right next to the North America Nebula. This is an active star forming region 1800 light years away with many young stars ionizing the gas and causing it to glow. I just love the details in this nebula. This Image is an interesting one as it was taken with two different telescopes and cameras. I originally used my 5” refractor and color camera to capture the hydrogen alpha images. I posted that back in June. I completed the image using my 8” RASA and my mono camera to capture the Oiii images. I’m quite happy with the result although it probably would have been better if I used the 5” scope for both images. Telescope: ES127FCD CF f/6, 8”RASA Camera: Zwo Asi071MC Pro and ASI1600MM Pro Exposure: 40x6min, Gain 90 and 90x4min Gain 139 Mount: EQ-6R Pro, Celestron CGX Guiding: ASI 290, 60mm scope Filter: Baader Ha and Oiii Software: APT, DSS, Pixinsight . . . . NGC 6188: The Dragons of Ara Image Credit & Copyright: Ariel L. Cappelletti #astronomypictureoftheday #astronomyphotography #astronomypicturesdaily #space #nasa #esa #nebula #Interstellar #dlr #hubble #imdbrj Explanation: Dark shapes with bright edges winging their way through dusty NGC 6188 are tens of light-years long. The emission nebula is found near the edge of an otherwise dark and large molecular cloud in the southern constellation Ara, about 4,000 light-years away. Born in that region only a few million years ago, the massive young stars of the embedded Ara OB1 association sculpt the fantastic shapes and power the nebular glow with stellar winds and intense ultraviolet radiation. The recent star formation itself was likely triggered by winds and supernova explosions, from previous generations of massive stars, that swept up and compressed the molecular gas. The featured image accumulated over 10 hours through a backyard telescope in Córdoba, Argentina and was false-colored using the Hubble palette highlighting emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in red, green, and blue hues. The field of view spans about four full Moons, corresponding to about 150 light years at the estimated distance of NGC 6188. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDqOcr_HOqv/?igshid=1rm37ihlsjo4i
