homemade banh cuon
Originally, I was going to post this as a photo post but I decided no. .. it’s gonna be long, I think lol so I made it into a text post.
Take a look at this spread =D !!
Tumblr media
This was in mid-June, at my friend DQ’s parents’ home.
I used to play badminton quite regularly with DQ - until she moved to Montreal a few yrs ago & *counting fingers* .. . we haven’t seen each other IRL for almost 5 yrs!!! She was here visiting her family & friends, & she invited me over for dinner bcos it was just easier (she has 2 kids: one turning 3 in Sept & one is just a few months old).
Her mom prepped most of the stuff already but I did help roll a few banh cuon’s. It was so good!!
Okay, now I’m gonna about banh cuon.
Banh cuon is a Vietnamese dish, & it is basically the Vietnamese version of Cantonese dimsum item “cheung fun”, aka Vietnamese rice rolls. You use (pre-steamed) rice paper to wrap pork & other things inside, & then it’s eaten with some greens & either dipped &/or drizzled with fish sauce. I say rice paper bcos it’s easier to understand but it’s not the type of rice paper you’re imagining (the spring roll or salad rolls kinds). It comes from a rice flour batter, & is poured onto a tray & steamed into a thin sheet. The ones at DQ’s home were purchased from an Asian frozen foods shop called Delta Foods. I have yet to visit this place... but they have frozen & fresh noodles & other items like dimsum as well. I will visit this place soon & try making banh cuon at home too!
The filling.. . traditionally, it contains a mixture of pork, fresh &/or dried shrimp, & onion. These are the most common, from what I’ve read. DQ’s mom used pork, onion, & wood-ear fungus so it’s kinda juicy & a bit crunchy as well. As for garnishes, basil, mint, bean sprouts, cucumber, lettuce. .. what’s not in the photo is this heavenly fried shallot oil that came from DQ’s aunt. She deep fries the shallots & puts it in oil & somehow, the shallots stays crunchy! o_O that stuff was so good!!  * the prepared fish sauce by DQ’s mom has sugar + water + regular fish sauce + fresh lemon juice.
Note: restaurants typically do not use fresh lemon/lime juice in their ‘prepared’ fish sauce mixture that they refrigerate bcos the solution will turn murky over time & it’s not visually appealing when it is served. But if it’s freshly made, they will (or they will cheap out & use the bottled juice). Since this fish sauce was homemade the morning of, you can see in the background that it’s slightly murky bcos she used the real stuff!
With the leftover rice papers, we ripped it into smaller pieces so it’s just basically shreds of rice paper. With these, we kind of made a ‘salad’ out of it, mixing all the garnishes with Vietnamese deli meat. Also very tasty!
Thank you for the meal =D
PS: auntie packed me a box to take home hehe

Hai Nam Saigon, 1425 E Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801
Tumblr media
Hai Nam Saigon is an old school, hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant that specializes in banh cuon. The menu includes banh cuon, banh tom, banh xeo (crepes), cha gio, noodle soups (hu tieu – mi, banh canh), bun/ dry vermicelli noodles, and drinks. You can order by item number.
Banh cuon dac biet hai nam ($11.30): Three flour sheet rolls with cha lu (pork cake) and two types of shrimp tempura. I’ve had my share of bahn cuon and theirs had the least amount of filling that I’ve ever seen. It was mostly the thin flat rice noodle sheet wrapped around a tiny bit of ground pork and wood ear mushrooms. I liked the flavors but was surprised by the skimpy amount of filling. The cha lu was thinly sliced. The bean sprouts, fresh herbs, and cucumbers were nice and fresh. The mung bean fritter and shrimp fritters were lukewarm and clearly not fried or even heated to order. The plate was accompanied by a large pitcher of nuoc cham. The flavors were good but they could have heated the fritters up.
Service was brusque. They barely spoke to me but there was also a language barrier. The restaurant is old and cluttered looking, with a mirror on one wall. The walls were dirty (not that I care).
Cash only. Closed on Wednesdays.

Cafe East
I have been remiss in not publishing a review of Cafe East as I first came here over a decade ago.  It was dirtier (but cheaper) then.  It is now much spruced up, so not as dependent on word of mouth for business.  It actually looks like a place that it might be nice to eat at rather than somewhere you are taking a bit of a punt on.
This fancy make-up better be justified given that prices have increased by more than 100% since the first and dingier time I visited.
As for the food, in recent years London has had some decent Vietnamese places spring up in central locations.  This perhaps obviates the need to travel to the ends of the earth for something authentic.
As for the name, I thought that it referred to the restaurant’s geographical origins.  Also tends to be a fairly accurate description of the clientele too.
Hot and sour sauce to go with the below.
Banh Cuon, rice pastry filled with minced pork and mushroom and topped with luncheon meat, fried shallots and bean sprouts with fish sauce.  You eat this dipped in the hot and sour sauce.  The casing was excellent and bouncy, the minced pork and mushroom filling adding just the right amount of meaty bite, the crunchy and soft bean sprouts and crisp shallots finishing off the ensemble.  This was my favourite dish of the meal.
Pot tai chin, lean rare and well-done beef with rice noodles.  Required a bit of DIY assembly before eating.
Lemongrass, basil, bean sprouts.
Chilli and lemon.
Pho following my inept attempts to fit as much of the greenery into my bowl. This was, delicious if a bit fiery.  In my greed for heat, I promptly added half the chilli to my dish.  In the same way that I do my cooking (not tasting as things go along, so incorporating lottery excitement into my every day life), I was surprised with the result but by then it was too late.  My eyes watered and my tongue caught on fire.  When the pain subsided, I found the dish tangy, meaty and altogether excellent.  The two types of beef with excellent firm yet yielding rice noodle was something to treasure.
Che Ba Mau, sweetened red kidney beans, green jelly, coconut milk and crushed ice.  Meaty, not too sweet, creamy and cold, a good dish/drink. Although this was dessert, this arrived at the start of the meal.   Good thing too as the coconut milk is the fire extinguisher I needed following the chilli.
Even with the increase in prices, Cafe East still provides a great meal for not that much.  Although other places may be in more convenient locations, have a more refined (i.e. non-canteen) atmosphere, if your focus is on having the best pho (and Banh Cuon), you could do worse then end up in the east.  A little while after eating I thought that maybe they are called Cafe East, not because of the origin of the food, but perhaps because it is way out with an “E” postcode.  In which case, I could do with more food like this close to home.
  A quiet eating 8/10.
Lunch (noodle, starter and drink) was GBP23 excluding other drinks and service.

A New Type of Lot in Town

The Sims 4 For Rent Expansion Pack introduces a new dimension to housing options, enhancing the overall depth and complexity of Sims’ relationships, personalities and experiences.

In Tomarang, these gorgeous dwellings feature versatile wooden window shades, homes on stilts near scenic beaches as well as historic bridges. For interiors, there are traditional wood carvings and rattan furniture available alongside traditional Southeast Asian-inspired rugs, chairs, tiles and lamps.
New Residential Rentals allow a Sim to get creative with fully customizable multi-family dwellings. Give your Sims a basement suite to rent out, create a cozy duplex for close families or even build spacious apartments for large families.
Community events, like a Potluck and Pool Parties, provide the perfect opportunities for Sims to engage with their neighbors and get a sense of community within their Residential Rental.

Property Management
Sims can soon evolve into savvy Property Owners and live amongst tenants or maintain separate residences while generating income from multiple property investments. While being at home can be relaxing, Property Owners may face a tenant revolt if you allow your ratings to slip too low, amongst other potential surprises including insect infestations, and challenges including mold.
To further immerse players into the world of For Rent, Sims can gain four new Aspirations, five Traits and a new Fear that help create unexpected and exciting stories. Tenants can experience evictions, and as a result, Fears now include a tenant being afraid of being evicted due to misbehavior–but don’t worry, you can always give someone a second chance!
On the flip side, Property Managers have their own layer of responsibility. It's not all fun and games! Property Owners can visit and do inspections, shoring up any broken objects—including the new Water Heater and Electrical Fuse Box utility objects. No Tenant is going to want cold water or flickering lights.
Sims can also have Aspirations to become the nosiest of Seeker of Secrets, a Five-Star Property Owner, the local Fount of Tomarani Knowledge, or a Discerning Dweller–the best neighbor and tenant ever. To make these communities even more interesting, Sims have five new traits. Sims can be Nosy, Generous, Cringe, Child of the Village and the Elder specific Wise–as wisdom comes with age.
Tumblr media
If you purchase the For Rent Expansion Pack anytime from November 2 to January 18, you’ll have access to our Street Eats Digital Content, which allows you to bring the night market flavor home with a grill cart, street umbrella and fruit basket.

TenSevenRolls, 264 S Mission Dr, San Gabriel, CA 91776
Tumblr media
TenSevenRolls took over the Burnt Belly BBQ stall at Blossom Market Hall (the food hall in San Gabriel). They serve the freshest, made to order Vietnamese food made with family recipes and cooked by the sweetest family. The menu is short. They serve banh cuon (choice of beef, pork, or tofu), banh xeo, cha gio (crispy rice paper egg rolls), goi cuon (spring rolls), and drinks. There’s also a sampler platter called Papa’s Plate that comes with 4 banh cuon, 2 cha gio, 1 goi cuon, and 1 drink ($19.95). Most items can be made vegetarian.
Their prices are higher than the Vietnamese places in Rosemead but in line with Blossom Market Hall’s higher prices. The food is super fresh though.
Papa’s Plate: The cha gio (crispy rice paper egg rolls with ground pork, minced mushrooms, carrot, glass noodles) served with lettuce leaves and fish sauce. You can wrap the cha gio in the lettuce if you like. The egg rolls were puffier and crispier than usual. They were also wider and ample filling and fresh from the fryer. Never had cha gio that was so fresh tasting. The goi cuon was nice – big shrimp, rice vermicelli noodles, a crispy egg roll (no filling), pork, mint, and lettuce. Very fresh. The peanut sauce had a strange sticky texture and not enough peanut flavor. The banh cuon was also very fresh but in thin rolls with little filling. They were topped with fried shallots and served with slices of cha lua, bean sprouts, and julienned cucumbers. The nuoc cham was fine but needed more fish sauce – was on the weaker side.
Vietnamese lime soda: Very tangy, light, fresh.
If you’re in a hurry, call ahead. The food is made to order, so it does take some time. Parking is easy to find and there’s usually plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) at Blossom Market Hall.

TF Armada Alexis’s Full Name
Full disclaimer out of the way, I’ve never watched Armada. I plan to though. Also, pull up a chair. This is another long one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of you know her. Some of you know a specific version of her. Whether it’s Alexis/Alexa from the anime, Alexis Garner from @itsthelass ‘s fic, Faeformers, your own, etc. During the time of the show’s run, she wasn’t given an official last name until this Almanac came out. 2010 vs. 2002 difference. Her full name is Alexis Thi Dang, confirming she’s Vietnamese. We don’t know she is full Vietnamese or half Vietnamese or what. Her design isn’t helpful.
I’ll accept Vietnamese American girls with brown hair. That were a few of my classmates in elementary school and almost every auntie I see. (Years are VERY off, but you get the point.) Good times. I don’t understand her green eyes though. Green eyes are less common than blue eyes, but genetics tend not to apply in anime/cartoons. (See Marinette’s blue eyes from the Miraculous Ladybug show. Also the fact, how Japanese characters look in anime compared to non-Japanese characters or real life Japanese people) I don’t know what eye colors her parents have, but if the green is natural, she must be at least a quarter Vietnamese. I think? I’m not doing math right now. Unless it’s a genetic mutation, but I don’t know how to tackle that. Yes, I know it’s possible for Vietnamese girls to have blue eyes. However, Google gave me one result of a Vietnamese girl with natural blue eyes, but she is one of the mountain people (ethnic minority). I should know the word for them, but I took Viet 1 some four years ago and forgotten. Other than that, all I have as evidence is this one girl I saw at my high school who has striking blue eyes and can never tell if it’s natural or not. I should’ve asked her, but her fluency and mien bac accent scared me.
I’m suspecting her green eyes are contact lenses, with prescription or not. It could be a headcanon for a fic. Do what you like with it. I edited some pictures of her with different colors below. Just to see how it’ll turn out.
You might be wondering why I’m even starting this discussion in the first place. “She’s from an old anime, don’t make a fuss.” “It’s just the color choice of the designers, whatever.” Yeah, but you know how excited I was when I read her last name? The fact I got a smidge of representation, even if it’s more Word of God than canon? The only other Asian humans we got are Sari Sumdac (kinda? Techno-organic?), Isaac Sumdac, and Miko Nakadai. There might be more I’m missing; feel free to let me know.
So where I going with all this nonsense? I want Alexis to showcase more of her Vietnamese culture.
Yeah, I know. Awful of me. Again, I’m giddy she’s Vietnamese. I know it’s impossible to show any of the Vietnamese stuff since the anime’s long over and almost nobody knows she’s Vietnamese. All I’m asking is a fanfic where it’s shown. It can be small or big. You know what, draw her in an ao dai or something. Have her eat banh cuon. I guess I should write my own things too. “If you can’t find it, make it yourself” sort of feelings.

we made banh cuon, which is one of my mum’s fave dishes. she used to make them herself but they were pretty time consuming to make - not sure how she made enough for five people even with her five burners! i remember how when we went to cali, she would go to her favorite banh cuon restaurant and just pig out (get the banh cuon deluxe platter).
the banh cuon are lacy white noodle crepes that are filled with pork, mushrooms, onions, jicama. they are served with nuoc cham (fish sauce diluted with water, lime juice or rice vinegar, sugar, crushed garlic and chili slices) along with bean sprouts, mint sprigs and julienned cucumbers.
