Behold the Beaded Bride!

I consider this my Magnum Opus as I’m not doing this again anytime soon! I did this back in 07-08 (I think) for my mom for Christmas. She was made using the 1901 French Bridal Gown from the Paradise Collection crochet series.

This is the materials and the beginning of the skirt pattern. Yup, you read that right-1000 sequins! (So it’s more sequined than beaded but whatever),Luckily Sis would string stuff for me whenever she got frustrated with homework/her video games.

It’s made in two sections; the bodice:

and the skirt. Both are rather simple; it’s the appliques that make it really fancy. The medallions were crocheted first and the lines of sequins or beads done up separately. Then using the template in the pattern you glued the pieces onto a thin piece of fabric to create the appliques. These you would cut out and glue onto the gown (which is why it hangs funny in places)

The circle medallions are spaced all around the bottom and the edges of the skirt are heavily beaded as well. You can also see the sleeve appliques here.

Here you can see the beaded choker and headdress. I had to redo some of the hanging beads as mice had chewed it! (but thankfully it was easy to fix)

Her veil is HUGE. It’s crochet beaded all along the edge and features another applique at the bottom.

Close up. I love the butterfly here matches the one on her bodice.

Her bouquet! The outer edge has a row of beads ans sequins. The mice ate the ribbon roses so I had to replace them; I like these better anyway. She also had a beaded purse but the mice destroyed it and I’m not inclined to make another one (I’m just thankful it wasn’t anything else!)

It’s been about 15 years and I’m STILL impressed I managed to make this! I hope you enjoyed seeing it:)

Nice to see this article about Barbie Fashion Designer on Kotaku, but also genuinely amazed that apparently "we" forgot all about Barbie Fashion Designer, probably the second best video game I have ever played.

#I hadn't been aware that this was sort of a breakthrough moment in 'games for girls' #I just thought it was a fun computer game #I also thought that the touch typing program my dad got for me was a fun computer game though #I can't remember if I had any success printing out the patterns on the special paper but I do remember the special paper? #I mostly just designed the clothes and did the bit where Barbie modelled them #she wouldn't go down the runway if you didn't pick shoes #she would say 'don't forget my shoes!' and you'd have to pick something before you could see the catwalk animation #however she would walk the runway wearing only shoes and her underwear #but I would never question the internal consistency of barbie's standards of dress #it is not for me to second guess barbara millicent roberts #also apparently digital domain was also working on the effects for titanic at the time #and the lead programmer on the barbie fashion designer project was pissed off with them for stealing all their server time #and called it 'that stupid boat movie'

So this dress is an example of my ‘eh good enough’ lifestyle. I wanted to make one dress then I decided I didn’t like the bodice so I swapped it out for another. I thought the skirt seemed kind short but I was too damn lazy to check it against something or measure or add more than 1/2” seam allowance. So then I was like yeah way too short hmmm I’ll add a waistband. Couldn’t be bothered to you know grab a waistband fro another pattern so figure out the right size so it’s too thick and kinda too long but whatever I ain’t about to rip it apart and fix it

And the skirt is about the perfect length now unhemmed so I decided I want to add some trim. I don’t have any trim. So then I had to figure out where to buy some and order it

I have some bridal trim coming because after hanging the dress on the door and looking at it I decided it needs to be the dress I wear to the Barbie movie. And Barbie deserves some fancy ass trim

Oh and I’m not sure I’ve got any red thread for the coverstitch to do the top stitching. So we’ll see how it ends up finished

And I don’t drink strawberry milk or really any milk except in tea or coffee. So lord only know why I made a dress out of this fabric instead of the pyjama shorts set I had planned

Bodice is the follow me wrap dress from pattern emporium and skirts are fairy godmother from made by runi. All the fabric is from dark matter fabric
