Neil is there to protect the one who protects them all.

Andrew always knew how to protect. He sure has his own ways that many fail to understand but the bottom line stays the same.

With Neil coming into his life he gets to be something else than just the protector - which I want to talk about here.

The exy obsessed junkie who claims to only care about his own survival is the first one who sees beyond Andrews play - who sees that Andrew doesn’t take care of himself at all. Too busy keeping an eye on everyone to care about what happens to his own self. And Neil hates it furiously.

So Neil puts Andrew first.

Starting with his health. Exy is important to Neil but he knows Andrew needs to get off the drugs first. The foxes found it easier to deal with Andrew while he’s on drugs, so they didn’t put much effort into changing that - Neil though. Neil saw what the drugs did to Andrew. So they had to get rid off it as fast as possible.

So he makes a deal. He gives up a piece of a truth, gives a promise and makes him go take care of himself.

He punches Riko because he couldn’t stop himself.

He agrees to go to Evermore - he agrees to torture just to keep Andrew save.

Afterwards he refuses to back down his care after being explicitly told to. “If it means loosing you then no”.

After being brutally tortured, one of the first things he does is inspecting Andrews bruises. Inspecting Andrews bruises the same way Andrew inspects his. “All that time fighting and you never learned how to duck?”

He told the cops off when they indicated getting Andrew off him “you’ll what, asshole?”

He was there in a heartbeat the second Andrew got pushed in the final game. And only backed off after checking Andrew was really alright.

For the first time Andrew has someone who has his back the same way he had the backs of everyone else for years. Andrew is fiercely protective and for the first time he is fiercely protected too.

“You are a pipe dream.”

So my personal thoughts about this are also mostly thanks to chats and inspiration/prompting from @jtl-fics and @greenautumnleaves so if you see any additions from them on this post it's most likely also thoughts I adore lol

Anyway this got kind of long so:

I ALSO latched onto Sakavic's statement that Neil wouldn't leave Jean in the nest bc yeah it makes sense and also ow

But just the two of them being partnered up like Riko and Kevin as is common in these aus, and then after Kevin gets out first, they have to stick together and rely on each other even MORE because Riko is pissed that Kevin is gone and probably takes it out on the next closest two idk

But in our imaginings, Renee or Andrew get Jean out quicker than in canon, again because Neil would refuse to leave Jean behind and I can only imagine he'd go so far as to trick or manipulate Jean into leaving. Maybe by being at a certain place at a certain time to get picked up, however he can make it happen. But the issue we run into is that once that's done, what the hell would Neil have left at Evermore, besides Exy that maybe he still loves deep down. But Exy's been so warped being raised on it at the nest that at that point his obsession is barely recognizable.

Kevin might recognize this, because he knew Neil in the nest. Or at least he knew the person that Neil presented himself as. But it's probably more likely that Jean recognizes this, and yeah things are super rocky and weird but Jean can barely even function without Neil. So back a fox goes to rescue their second raven's partner.

They bring Neil back to Palmetto and he and Jean are completely inseparable. Emotionally and physically. Neither of them act like, feel like, or even call themselves "touchy feely" or "clingy" people but as soon as Neil is treated for various intense and mysterious injuries, they're curled up in some hidden place for hours. Even the short time having left Neil behind made Jean almost too anxious to leave his room. Even the short time without Jean - now with more punishment for aiding Jean's escape - was enough for Neil to consider something drastic.

(side note: Andrew now has not one, not two, but three gorgeous tragic boys under his supervision and I'm sure he's handling that totally normally lmao. But it's so obvious to him that Jean and Neil have something going on that any ideas for himself aren't worth entertaining.)

So it's a little easier to ease out of various habits and thought processes because Jean and Neil are doing it together, with outside help. They fix their sleep cycles/rhythms, try a slightly more normal college diet, and most slowly lose their "win or die" mindset in practices. They're still never seen without each other - Wymack had a talk with some of the school board about their schedules and dorm arrangements for the first semester. In reality, he's not sure if he should have them go cold turkey on raven habits or if he should take it slower, but he's doing his damn best to get these boys adjusted to life outside a cult. And Neil and Jean, whether or not they actively realize it, find that step to be the one they absolutely cannot take. Why would they go through the agony of learning to live separately if they don't have to. When no one else understands them like the other, when they've already seen each other's worst so nothing else is worth keeping secret between them. Who else is Jean going to go to when having a better life makes him feel like he more deserves death or punishment and the guilt hits him so hard he can't breathe, much less sleep. Who else is Neil going to go to when he can't let go of his birthright - if he isn't good at what he does (Exy) he literally could just be shot like a lame horse - and he's not allowed to go practice Exy against a wall to the point of tearing himself apart anymore so he forces his feet away from the court to find the only person he knows he'll listen to when they say no.

Kevin, of course, is keeping a close eye on the two, whether unintentionally or on purpose is unclear. Neil still has a mouth on him, he sometimes plays mind games with the foxes like chess against himself, and most of all does not allow anyone to get too close to Jean. Jean is still quiet, having learned not only to take a punishment without resistance but also that Neil will speak first. Neil will resist so Jean doesn't have to. He's safer in Neil's shadow.

Maybe it's a phrase or warning that Neil uses and that Kevin recognizes. Maybe it's a gesture between Neil and Jean that Kevin oversees. Maybe it's just the general demeanor of the two. But whatever it is is familiar to Kevin, not in a "I remember this from them in the nest" way. He can recognize by now that Riko was not good to him, he can acknowledge it even if the rest of him hasn't caught up. He looks at Jean in Neil's shadow and remembers himself in Riko's.

As if Butcher's son Nathaniel Wesninski wasn't already scary enough on his own.

But Kevin won't allow this kind of thing on his court, and he's not good at it but he is still trying to let go of unhealthy raven ideals. If Neil is holding onto some fucked up dynamic, Kevin is going to put a stop to it.

He pulls Jean aside, a miraculous feat. He asks what Neil has done.

"Mistake" might be an understatement.

It could very easily be the longest string of words Jean has said to anyone besides Neil. Kevin doesn't know near as much French as he does in canon - Neil is the one that shares that secret defiance - so it's all clear English, Jean making sure Kevin understands every word. Kevin should never speak about Neil that way again. He knows nothing about them, he shouldn't so much as pretend to understand Neil. Neil is the only good thing that ever happened to Jean. Kevin never cared enough to bring it up in the nest, so he has no right to start caring now.

It isn't great for their already tumultuous relationship. Kevin wonders for a bit if Jean would tell Neil about it - then next practice Neil doesn't even try to work with Kevin, even after the two had made it a point as strikers to figure out how to. He ignores the other strikers entirely, falling immediately and seamlessly into perfect synch with Jean behind him, speaking hardly a word of English the whole practice. Because he knows that will make Kevin even more angry than Neil being actively hostile to his new teammates.

Kevin isn't sure what he was expecting. Chances are Jean hadn't even needed to bring it up for Neil to notice something was off.

As for Andrew, I think he could still pick up a game of truths. He'd need to offer a similar deal as he did for canon Neil, this time for Neil-and-Jean, the entity of the two of them together. I think he could ensure some cooperation by saying he won't force Jean and Neil apart from each other the way some others have muttered about doing. Even if Neil knows by now the codependence isn't healthy, neither of them are ready to give it up.

It probably really throws Andrew to hear that they don't consider themselves to be an item. They're together, sure, but for a raven that doesn't always, maybe even rarely, means "in a traditional relationship". Neil and Jean definitely never offer any clarification. That's no one else's business, even if they could explain it so that a non-raven could understand. Generally I feel like if this is an andreil universe, it's an even longer, stranger, more winding road to get there than in canon.

I'm almost CERTAIN there's more Im forgetting about rn but this has been my taster on raven Neil+Jean, I hope it was at least a little bit coherent, and greenautumnleaves - I hope this comes anywhere close to your galaxy brain ideas on these two lol. Maybe I'll be back with other thoughts later who knows

Little Hope MBTI character analysis

A little while ago, I made this post where I typed all of the DPA characters as their possible MBTI types. I enjoyed thinking about it, so I thought I would go ahead and share my analysis for each of the characters!😊

Starting with the Little Hope characters because @delurkr expressed interest, so thank you!😊 Currently working on the MoM characters, so I will also post those as soon as I'm done❤

Here are my analysis posts for all the games!

Andrew (INFJ): Andrew was one of the easiest DPA characters for me to type. INFJs are the "Advocate" or the "Counselor." Both INFJs and ENFJs typically fill the role of the group mediator, due to their combination of Introverted Intuition (Ni) and Extroverted Feeling (Fe). For INFJs, Ni is their primary cognitive function, which essentially relates to their desire to figure things out. They find themselves in their own head very often, trying to make sense of various concepts or ideas. We see this with Andrew, as he spends the majority of the game trying to figure out what's going on and how they're connected with their doubles from the past. Fe is INFJ's secondary cognitive function, which relates to the "mediator" or "counselor" aspect of their personality type. Andrew pleads for the other characters to stop their fighting when it's clear to him that the arguing is not helping them figure out what's going on. Finally, INFJs essentially have a "chameleon" personality, which enables them to get along with almost any type of personality. We also see this with Andrew, as he's the only character who gets along pretty well with every other character. At the same time, unfortunately, this can also make it hard for them to really know who they truly are, and it can also make it harder for other people to understand the INFJ as well as the INFJ understands others. I personally believe I am an INFJ myself and I related a lot to Andrew tbh, so I feel pretty good about this typing haha

Taylor (ENFP): ENFPs are the "Campaigner" or the "Champion." An ENFP's primary function is Extroverted Intuition, which Taylor certainly exhibits with her consistent desire to see if there's another path or another way to go about things, for example. Ne also has a tendency to want to focus on big picture stuff, rather than small details. Taylor recognizes that the town of Little Hope sucks and has some bad mojo going on, and she's more interested in simply getting out than she is in determining just why it sucks. I also believe her Ne is the reason she wanted to stay at the bus instead of going further into the town, because she had a feeling that the town was bad news. Speaking of feelings, an ENFP's secondary function is Introverted Feeling, which Taylor definitely exhibits when she opens up to Daniel about finally feeling like part of the group. She talks about what does and what doesn't feel right to her, which is a big indicator of Fi. Fi users have strong beliefs and base their morals off of what they feel is right or wrong, rather than basing them off of what other people feel is right or wrong. Taylor knows how she feels about the town and she is willing to fight on behalf of her feelings & beliefs, which we see her do when she argues with John about it. ENFPs are also very spirited, high-energy people, just like Taylor. They can be a little silly and they're not afraid to be themselves, as they often have their own ways of doing things. I feel pretty good about typing Taylor as a spirited ENFP!

Daniel (ESFP): I went back and forth on Daniel, but I feel good about typing him as ESFP. ESFPs are the "Entertainer" or the "Performer." An ESFP's primary function is Extroverted Sensing, which relates to seeking out experiences and simply wanting to do things, even if it's just for the sake of doing them. Upon Daniel & Taylor being returned to the group through the fog, Daniel immediately has to go back through the fog to see if it happens again. He doesn't stop to think about it, he just does it because he doesn't want to waste any time pondering what just happened. When you think about the scientific method, the step of hypothesizing comes before the actual experimentation; but not for Se users- they always skip right to the actual experiment so they can reach their conclusion faster. Daniel also doesn't hesitate to reach for the little girl hiding in the playground, and there are also a few other instances where he acts immediately. Similar to ENFPs, an ESFP's secondary function is also Introverted Feeling. When Taylor objects to Angela about the idea of Daniel being her boyfriend, Daniel immediately takes it personally, believing that Taylor doesn't want to think of him that way. He seeks reassurance from her, and it's interesting to see 2 secondary Fi users try to reassure each other throughout the game. Similar to Taylor, Daniel knows how he feels about the town and about what's happening to their doubles, and he is also willing to fight for his own beliefs.

Angela (ISTJ): ISTJs are the "Logistician" or the "Inspector." An ISTJ's primary function is Introverted Sensing, which relates to simply observing facts and taking things for what they are. Si is different from Se in that, while Se users just want to do things, Si users tend to watch things and make their judgments based off of what they observe. Angela acknowledging the fact that her demon only started pursuing her once her double was executed is an example of Si. She doesn't need to analyze why the demon chased her after her double was drowned, it's enough for her to understand that your double dies = a demon tries to kill you. ISTJs are very fact-oriented due to their Si. An ISTJ's secondary function is Extroverted Thinking, which typically lends itself well to administrative or leadership roles. This could be why Angela criticizes John's leadership and his inability to make decisions- because her Te would arguably make her a better leader, and it can sometimes frustrate Te users when they have to follow someone who doesn't lead with the same decisiveness. An ISTJ's primary Si mixed with their secondary Te can also cause them to make blunt observations about people, which is similar to how Angela outright refers to Daniel as Taylor's boyfriend upon observing that the 2 of them seem to like spending so much time together. All in all, Angela is a very practical ISTJ character who isn't afraid to say things like they are and she doesn't want to mess around.

John (ENTP): John was definitely one of the hardest DPA characters for me to type, as I'm still going back & forth on him tbh. He's definitely a T type, but I don't believe he's a J type, as xxTJs are typically more assertive & sure of their decisions, which we know is something John struggles with. I also believe he's an intuitive rather than a sensor, so that narrows it to xNTP. Here's where it gets tricky: choosing between INTP & ENTP isn't as simple as figuring out whether he's more introverted or extroverted. The question is whether his primary function is Extroverted Intuition or Introverted Thinking. I can definitely see him being an ENTP, as they are known for "playing Devil's Advocate," which John arguably does by accusing Mary of being the source of evil within Little Hope. ENTPs are the "Debater" or the "Visionary." ENTPs like to question almost anything and everything as a way to learn more about the world in which they live. They will never back down from an intellectual challenge, and they're also not afraid to question other people on their ideas or points of view. We can see John do this, as he's not afraid to disagree with the other characters when they give their opinion on what's going on. He challenges Taylor on her desire to wait at the bus, he challenges Andrew on his stance of trying to defend Mary, etc. His primary Ne mixes with his secondary Ti to think outside the box and work to discover other possibilities that make sense to him & what he believes to be true. He humors Taylor & Daniel about their claim that the fog led them back to the group, he proposes the idea to Andrew to burn the poppet they find in the museum in case it's the source of the evil, he tries to think of any possible ways that they can help their doubles from the past. I think I feel good saying he's an ENTP!

Riko/Renee Rinee

Renee would be first and only ever woman Riko is interested in, their relationship starts slow held back by Riko's inability to feel at ease in fox tower and distrust towards himself

Everyone labels the relationships as Renee taking in a pet project to fix while Riko is hungry for any sort of attention, only Kevin and Andrew see that it's beginning of something serious (if Riko will allow it to be) , because Andrew knows Renee and Kevin knows Riko

Renee can not cook meanwhile Riko's arm is broken and so he gets to teach her how to not fuck up pan cakes

Renee enjoys sparring with Riko, due to her past experience she does not feel comfortable with stronger men, knowing Rikos fighting style and knowing well that she could with with him in a fight calms down her anxieties, Riko is excellent boxer but when it comes to real fighting he has no chance against her.

in future when she's more comfortable and trusting of him she will teach him to better defend himself

She sees him as doberman with cropped tail and ears, going through life not understanding he had been mutilated.

Riko is not prepared for Renee to finish collage much sooner than he would the separation is extremely hard on him

Girl and boy, Riko is stay at home boywife, Renee plays exy for few seasons before retiring to enjoy home life. (i have way too many different head cannons about Riko's parenting and his issues with parenting sent asks])

Riko/Kevin

they are soulmates they are always together no matter of au or story progression they always love each other in some way

Kevin dislikes seeing Riko move on and work on getting better, he is scared that there will be no place for Kevin beside new "fixed" Riko

Kevin is scared of future, and tends to romanticize their time at the nest finding comfort in time where he was the centre of Rikos universe

Riko is the one to drag Kevin to start therapy - they have group sessions

Riko gets king chess piece tattooed on ring finger , Kevin gets a cown

Riko/Jean

Jeremy is one of not many people Riko is actually afraid (of course he is drawn to him)

Jeremy is son of politician and in the know about Moriyamas activities

Jeremy likes teasing Riko about his poor social status [being just moriyama family commodity rather than actual part of the power]

Riko entertains him mainly hoping the relationship might be useful for him in future

Riko/Nathaniel

Nathaniel is little sadist he got it after his daddy, he loves using Riko as his canvas for cuts and scarification, most days he spends time modifying Rikos skin or tending to old cuts

Riko can't deny things to Nathaniel

Riko/Nicky

Nicky is very active and always looking for partners whatever or not on the list or with Erik's approval

Riko enjoys teasing him

They really are not together, it's just a lot of teasing and Nicky wanting to get laid and everyone around making it into meme

Riko/Jack -Jack wants to be to Riko what Riko was to Kevin in nest

Riko/Andrew

andrew is one of people who are very honest towards riko [openly tell him to fuck off] riko takes comfort in someone who is not trying to be nice/pity full towards him, he needs people to hold him accountable for things he done

riko learn to play the game by andrews rules not even interacting with andrew but seeing the way andrew interact with everyone, any time someone makes mistake riko sees? he uses it as occasion to never make this mistake himself

andrew is not amused, not mad either, there is some pleasure in knowing that someone is tailoring their personality to match all of his needs

andrew is the only person able to handle riko physically and set hard boundaries with him

So no matter how hard Andrew tried to tell you, you didn’t seem to understand he was more than interested

The first time was after a gala night you went to together. You looked absolutely gorgeous and he kept telling you, making sure you felt comfortable and confident. “I’m such a lucky guy to be your partner tonight. I hope I get to be for the rest of my life.” You frowned, wondering what he meant. But you never knew since an old costar popped up out of nowhere and Andrew never talked about it again

Another time was when you were sick. Being away from your family, the only person that can to take care of you was Andrew. “You don’t have to do this” you said that night after he spend the whole day with you at bed “I could do this everyday for you” he whispered, kissing your forehead before you fell asleep, leaving him alone with his thoughts

Andrew also tried one day when you went to a kinds of date in the park for your day off. You looked like a couple, you laying on Andrew’s lap while he was reading you a book. It was intimate and sweet. “I have something to tell you” he said, leaning to your face. But once again, Andrew didn’t get the chance. Fans appeared in front of you and asked for pictures. Once they were gone, Andrew pretended to forget what he wanted to say.

“Did you see the comments online? People think we are dating” you said to Andrew a few days later. Pictures from you in the park came out and people were going crazy over it on social media. You had to say you looked cute. You wished it was real. But not as much as Andrew wished it was.

“Would it be a bad thing?” He asked, coming closer to you. You asked him what he meant. And Andrew best answer was to give you the sweetest kiss of your life. His hands were holding your face and you loved how sweet his lips tasted on yours.

OP I LOVED UR ANDREIL POST GOING CRAZY THINKING ABOUT IT if you have anything else in that amazing brain of yours on this take please do share because i absolutely LOVED how you articulated this aspect about andreil. its something i particularily appreciate about their dynamic and relationship with anger and Their Issues TM. your post will cross my mind whenever ill think about it from now on.

I don’t think I have ever gotten an ask and this is kind of making me go insane??? I hope you know that you made my day and also, I’m so glad people share in my endless brainrot bc when it comes to this series and these characters I simply cannot stop

It really isn’t nearly talked about enough that the thing that got Andrew to actually look at Neil and become interested was (as cited by Neil himself at some point tho I can’t remember in which book that scene is from the top of my head) Neil’s bone-deep jealousy of Kevin. It’s—it ties into that whole epiphany that Neil has at some point, when he looks at Andrew and realizes that while he is hurtling towards his own breaking point and about to burn out and shatter into something he’s not sure he’d recognize if he survived the encounter, Andrew hit that point and broke from it years ago. And that’s an understanding that goes both ways between them—in a fucked up way, it feels like Andrew might be the future that Neil has waiting for him if he doesn’t end the year six feet under: hollow and drifting, passionless after everything he had to rip away from himself to be able to survive. At the same time, Neil probably reminds Andrew of how he used to be, back when he had hope for things only to have that hope rip him apart—which is exactly where Neil seems to be headed for the majority of the story.

I think that a lot of Andrew’s understanding of Neil comes from the fact that he knows intimately what it feels like to be caught between a rock and a hard place and cut his own lifeline, only to then fail to die on impact. Neil hasn’t had to resort to that yet, but he is hanging by a thread. You’d think that watching him struggle would only serve to drive it home for Andrew that he made the right choice in closing himself off, except… well. His expectations of life and the people in it are so bleak, it’s no wonder he finds himself drawn to Neil’s messy emotions and every unexpected show of spine like a moth to a flame.

Neil, for all of his issues and scars, can still feel things—can still want something so badly it defies all logic. Can want something with such visceral, fucked-up intensity that it resonates where it shouldn’t. It’s an ability that Andrew thinks he’s either lost or cut out of himself to stay somewhat safe, sane and alive a long time ago, but that remains as the most fundamental crack in the foundation of his being. It’s a fascination that seems to come out every time he’s sober and eventually ties into him wanting Neil—wanting something worth wanting and putting a name to it once he finds it. They look at each other and don’t want a watered-down version of the person in front of them. It creates a relationship that embraces issues big and small and accepts (even values!) the messy parts of being human. It means that any space shared between them immediately becomes safe once they settle into something comfortable together. The way they handle the uglier sides of each other’s personality honestly makes me feral because it’s always done with understanding and acceptance and they even find positives or comforts there that the other can’t see and that’s probably a reason for why 1) their chemistry is so off the charts and 2) their relationship is so damn healthy (in addition to their communication being stupidly good when it comes to each other).

Andrew wants something real and Neil wants to be real. And then they get to have exactly that.

DBSIDBSID. the kandrew beef is Personal and it’s so funny. i am working on making them get closer it just takes a lot of time bc andrew simply does not like to stick around. he comes to a sort of truce with them at some point, mostly after he and jean have a Talk alone, but he still doesn’t like kevin for a while. there IS side andreil tho…. neil is 26 :3 he comes to visit kevjean in paris for a bit and immediately causes problems. but the problems help them get their shit together so it’s fine! andrew is of course intrigued. most of it happens in the background tho bc they like to disappear together…… but neil actually ends up in foster care and gets adopted by wymack when he’s around 13, which is around the same age andrew is adopted and meets jeremy, so they understand each other still :) they do a lot of sneaking around and do not want their relationship perceived at all vs jeremy knox head of the PDA committee and very happy for his own friend finding love.

the biting…….. jeremy falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum but he does suffer from the most intense feelings of love anyone has ever felt and will latch on like a dog and not let go sometimes. it really depends on his mood and what they’re doing how hard he bites ^-^ jean almost never complains but kevin always does. as is how they are. and they really both love attacking kevin. sitting there biting at his neck and shoulders and jean in particular likes gnawing on the wrist bone. jeremy is only a few inches shorter than kevin but will not hesitate to push him around….. dreamy sigh. at first he’s very nervous about overstepping Anything around either of them but once he knows that they actually like him he becomes such a menace. it’s his life’s duty to make kevin day, his childhood celebrity crush, a little embarrassed and whiny. both he and jean are soooo happy to tease kevin and kevin complains constantly about being ganged up on. jeremy is actually still IN college too, he turns 23 toward the beginning of the fic (i. hc him as a cancer!) and he and andrew have their fifth year to get through so he’s really just some college kid nibbling on and picking on them and taking over their apartment. trust that jean gets teased too he wouldn’t want anyone left out!

JEANFO….. jean….. my apple strudel….. there is so much i could say about him but it feels hard to do him justice…… he really is so special. he’s a little more healed of course bc he’s 28 and has always had kevin keeping contact with him. kevin got out at 14 so jean was there for 6 years without him and it’s really. it’s not a good time for him. but kevin refuses to lose contact and even sneaks across state lines to see him at 16 when he gets his license (with 14yo neil). jean has always had something to hold onto and live for. so jean is doing okay……. he still struggles and he’s very stubborn so he would rather AVOID things and kevin isn’t the kind of person who’s going to push him to face them (kevin has his own things to avoid) but he gets a good push from jeremy. and he LOVESSSS keremy. it’s one of his greatest joys that the two people he loves most care about each other the way they do. he’s so obsessed with them and so excited to show them off when they get together with friends. he’s really a little bit of a clingy freak :-) ESPECIALLY if he gets drunk. he’s a very needy drunk and if someone doesn’t kiss him (or if he doesn’t get to bite) his whole night is ruined and they certainly can’t have that. he learns quickly he cannot keep up with jeremy Party Boy knox tho. he’s a silly guy <3 sooo bitchy to everyone outside of his boyfriends but tender with them…. they’re trusted with his girlish little heart. i could talk about him for ages but i fear tumblr will cut me off LOL our responses to each other are getting so long like we’re writing letters by candlelight to be sent post-haste…..

Krystall: You know, I was going to suggest the same thing. She might not be a romantic partner to any of them, but she was their work partner, so she totally counts.

Max: I mean I’m easy. I feel like as the newest member I get the absolute least amount of say 😂

Will: Plus, maybe we can push the romantic partner envelope a bit… since she and Luke aren’t working together anymore…

Kristy: Yes, exactly!

Savannah: Damn, Penelope’s gonna be there now??? And I don’t get to hang out with her because I have the AUDACITY to be living in another state? Unfair.

Kristy: Hey, so Krystall, Will, Max, and I have something called the “Profiler Partner Brunch Bunch” and we all get brunch every Saturday the team is away, and I know you’re not dating anyone on the team, but we want to make you an honorary member, make sure you never feel excluded. We’d love it if you could join us on Saturday. I know it’s kind of short notice, but the idea JUST struck us.

Penelope: Kristy Simmons you absolute angel, I would LOVE to.

Penelope: That sounds like so much fun!!! I would love to.

Kristy: Yay!! I’ll add you to the chat.

That Saturday, Penelope was greeted by kisses and hugs from her friends. “This is such a cute idea,” she said as they sat down. “Who came up with it?”

“Well for the longest while I was the only one,” Will said. “But then Beth came along, way back when, and she and I started this, and people have been filtering in and out ever since. Alex’s husband came by when he was in town, Kate’s husband, when she was on the team, Savannah, of course, and then everyone else here.”

“Savannah still comes, occasionally, when she’s in town,” Kristy said. “Andrew does too.”

“That’s amazing! Did Lisa ever come, back when she and Luke were still together?” Penelope didn’t know why she was asking about Lisa, especially since Luke had asked her out just a few days before. She still couldn’t quite believe it.

“No, actually,” Will replied.

Penelope had to admit, she was shocked. “Wait, really?”

“Yeah,” Kristy said. “I mean, we invited her and told her she was always welcome, but she never came. Always had to work, I guess.”

“You know,” Krystall said, “I can’t say I ever met her.”

“Me neither,” Max added. “Although I came after her, didn’t I?”

“Yeah, you did,” Kristy confirmed.

“I’ve never heard anyone on the team mention this,” Penelope said. “Do they know?”

Kristy, Will, Krystall, and Max all looked at each other, thinking. “No, I don’t think they do,” Krystall eventually said.

“Not that we’re trying to keep it a secret,” Will added.  “But it hasn’t exactly come up, you know? It’s like our own little support group. It’s nice to talk to people who understand how hard it can be to have your partner gone a lot.”

“Yeah,” Max said. “It can put a strain on any relationship. New, or old, so this is how we cope with that, relieve some of the stress. And yeah, it sounds selfish, because they’re off risking their lives and hunting down the worst in humanity, but it can be hard being the partner of someone who’s gone all the time, it’s just a fact.” She took a sip of her drink. “Plus the mimosas are awesome.”

“A very welcome bonus,” Kristy agreed, taking a sip of her own.

“Penelope, are you okay?” Krystall asked her. “You seem like you’re panicking.”

Penelope thought she had been doing a good job of keeping her emotions from showing on her face, but apparently she was wrong. All that talk about how hard it could be to be with someone who was gone all the time… especially a new relationship… it scared her a bit. She really liked Luke, and she wanted whatever they were starting to work out. “Can you guys keep a secret?”

Her four friends looked at each other, slightly confused, then back at her. “Yeah.”

“Luke asked me out the other day,”

“Holy shit,” Will whisper-screamed. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah. And all this talk about how hard it can be dating someone who’s gone all the time is making me kinda nervous. Actually it’s making me pretty scared.”

“Well that’s a good thing, right?” Max asked. “Because if you’re scared, it means you want it to work out, which means you’re willing to put the work in.”

Penelope was unsure. “I guess so…”

Krystall took her hand. “Sweetheart, you have nothing to be scared about.”

“What do you mean?”

“Because if you want it to work, and he wants it to work,”

“And he does,” Kristy added. “He really, really does, trust us.”

“Then it will,” Krystall finished. “Everyone can see that there’s something between you two.”

“Including me,” Max said. “And I’ve only seen you together once.”

Penelope turned to her, shocked. “Wait, how?”

“It’s the way he looks at you,” all four people she was sitting with answered simultaneously.

“Wow, okay.”

“So, details,” Kristy said, shoving her lightly. “We need details! When? Where? How? And when? Seriously, when? You just left the team, and they’re not even back from their first case without you!”

Penelope felt a blush slowly creep up her neck and cheeks as she recalled that night. “It was at my going away party. He pulled me away for a water break and said, ‘I was wondering, since we’re not going to work together anymore, maybe I could take you to dinner?’ He was really nervous, too, blushing and stammering over his words and such. It was actually pretty cute.”

“Wait,” Krystall said. “I saw that! Oh, that’s so exciting!”

“He couldn’t wait one more second to ask you out,” Will said. “And you wondered how we could all tell he had something for you.”

Penelope blushed and looked down to her drink. “I guess that’s fair.”

“So when are you two going out?” Max asked. “And where’s he taking you?”

“I don’t know, we didn’t really get the chance to talk about it yet.” As if on cue, Penelope’s phone went off. A text from Luke. “Actually, that’s him right now.”

“Well, answer it!” Kristy says excitedly.

Penelope unlocked her phone and read the text from Luke. “He says that at the rate they’re going with the case right now, they should be back by Wednesday at the latest, unless they hit a major roadblock, and would I be interested in going out that night, and if not, the next day?”

“Oh my god that’s amazing,” Max blurted. “I mean he wants to take you out on a Wednesday, a night that’s not very popular for dates, as soon as he gets back from a case? He wants to go out with you as soon as he possibly can, which I mean checks out, since he asked you out right away after you left, so it means he’s super into you.” Everyone else stared at her. “What?”

“You sound like a profiler,” Will told her.

“Spencer talks a lot. You learn a thing or two.”

“Well, what are you going to respond?” Kristy asks Penelope.

She spoke as she typed her response. “Sounds good to me! Can’t wait.”

Luke: Me neither.

Luke: I’m really glad you said yes. I kinda like you a lot, so I was really nervous you were going to say and our whole friendship would be *woosh* out the window.

Penelope: Well, I kinda like YOU a lot, so the answer was easy. Come back soon and safe, okay?

Luke: I promise <3

Penelope bit her lip and grinned at the little heart emoticon Luke sent her. Just then, Kristy’s phone went off. “It’s a text from Matt. We’re driving to the family of a victim’s house right now to talk to them, and Luke is looking at his phone and grinning like an idiot. What are the odds he’s texting Penelope?” She looked up from her phone at the woman in question. “Can I tell him?”

“Go ahead.”

Kristy spoke out loud as she typed. “One hundred percent. I’m with her right now and she’s texting him.” A pause as Matt responded, and then, “He wants to know what we’re doing.”

“Is this what High School is like nowadays?” Krystall asked. 

“Probably,” Max replied. Then to Kristy she said, “Tell him that we’re doing a Partner’s Brunch and she is an honorary member because she used to be on the team.”

“He says, hopefully she won’t be an honorary member much longer, the way he was smiling at his phone. Now that she’s off the team, maybe he’ll get his head out his ass and actually ask her out.”

“I want to see that smile he’s talking about,” Penelope said.

“I’ll ask him if he can send a picture.” A moment as they waited for his reply. “He says he can't, he's put his phone away and stopped smiling as much.”

“Well then let me fix that,” Penelope said, pulling her phone back out.

Penelope: Give any thought to where you’re going to take me?

Luke: There’s this new place downtown that supposedly has AMAZING vegetarian options.

Luke: And live music and dancing, if that’s something that interests you.

“Damn, who knew Luke as a romantic?” Will asked after Penelope shared these texts with them.”

“Doesn’t surprise me,” Krystall said. “Not after some of the stories David has shared with me.”

aurora "rory" cohen ( victoria pedretti fc ): rory's a character that came to me when i got back into the rpc and she has been my baby since. she's a baker and pretty much, all sunshine and honey and freshly baked cookies. she's kind of a celebrity in her hometown, since she's the mayor's daughter from a small town, and kinda loves it bc she loves to get to know new people. she also just tends to talk too much. her family fell apart a couple years back bc daddy cheated and the whole town was all over it and then her first love broke her heart so she's currently in her healing era, living with her pitbull and trying to get her own bakery up n running.

adrien zahir ( avan jogia fc ): adrien is a muse i've had for yeaaars and i never get tired of writing him. he's a guitar player in the kinda famous rock band loudmouth ( and i write all the band members too ) and basically his background is that he was kicked out of his family by an overly religious father who hated the fact his only son was queer. so he found himself a new family instead. he went through many revamps and as of his latest one, he went from a sex crazed, addicted, alcoholic, messy rockstar to a soon-to-be daddy, pretty much married, recovered and decent human being. he's still loud, brazen, flamboyant and that's why we love him sm.

theodore becker ( andrew garfield fc ): theo is my broadway star. well, currently on a break. so he's basically a sweetheart broadway actor who was head over heels in love with the man of his dreams and he thought it was time to take things to the next level. he proposed, got a no for an answer and decided he needed some time away from new york, so he moved back home to help his dads out with their small business. he's pretty much a goof, big musical theater nerd, and just has a lot of love to give. i adore him sm.

alev özberk ( alperen duymaz fc ): poor man's version of clyde from the infamous duo bonnie and clyde. his bonnie is written by a friend of mine and we just have sm fun with those two. alev is my badboy, he's been part of a gang and has done some pretty hefty stuff in his life. he's a burglar, a liar, a drug dealer and all around a shitty person. but he's honestly so much fun to write bc he's always getting up to something and honestly, i miss him sm.

Tick, Tick...BOOM! (2021)

Based on the autobiographical musical by playwright Jonathan Larson. It's the story of an aspiring composer in New York City who is worried he made the wrong career choice, whilst navigating the pressures of love and friendship.

JayBell: I remember when this movie came out and everyone online would not stop talking about it. So I added it to my watch later list and years later here we are. I didn’t know anything about Jonathan Larson going into this. Unlike Anzie, I like musicals and singing in movies. But I also can’t say I’ve seen too many musicals, including Rent.

With that said, I had a great time with this movie. The acting, the singing, the dancing, the songs, the relationships, the story—it’s all great. I also really love how the story is told. Jonathan Larson (played by Andrew Garfield) is telling his own story on stage to an audience. Almost like he’s doing stand up for his own life. And that’s just something I’ve never quite seen before, so I find that refreshing and interesting.

Also I’m glad the movie shares Larson’s fate in the beginning so I had time to prepare. Because I would have been so angry to be surprised in the end. But it’s still incredibly sad and bittersweet. But it’s also honest, and sometimes an honest ending is more effective than a happy one.

The relationship between Larson and Michael was clearly a major part of the movie, and the way it’s portrayed is beautiful. Also a surprise Vanessa Hudgens appears. Hi Vanessa!

This movie is way more existential than I thought it would be. I definitely was not prepared for that. It really does capture the anxieties that come with aging as you approach these “age milestones” for lack of a better word. These fears and anxieties are almost captured a little too well for my liking. Like please don’t expose me that much. That just goes to show how relatable it is though, even for amazing writers like Jonathan Larson.

Anzie: Soo this review is very hard to write. I’ve thought about my feelings on the movie all week. And I have to just begin by saying any issues I take with this movie is probably only bc I’m an uncultured swine. I have no thoughts about Rent bc I’ve never seen it- I knooow- I only know it was very popular.

I just wanna say all the actors were soo good and all the performances and singing was great. Andrew Garfield was so great and definitely gave the “Omigawd I’m getting older and anxious vibe,” flawlessly might I add. (Which ouch too close to home) And how the conflict of wanting to be in a thousand places at once to accomplish everything you need but also be there for loved ones. (Again so ouch) And the scene where it’s them singing about the insane mess of trying to figure out what someone wants in a relationship was really good too. Everything in the total anxiety of life is just so relatable, and then terribly sad. It’s a good movie and there are so many details that make it- like Jonathan’s bday gift towards the end and how it’s thoughtful and sweet, and that small little understanding about another person in relationships and uggggg why’s there so much singing.

Now I’m sooo soo sorry, but the singing. Unless it the 1986 version of Little Shop of Horrors or the Sound of Music, I’d rather jump off of a cliff. And that’s on me- but if I heard the song they were practicing one more time I was going to screech. All I know is it was “everyone will be there or something.” Bc it’s drilled in my head. I also had no clue about Jonathan Larson, which makes me feel like a total jerk. Like it’s me not you. I loathe musicals for the most part, I’m sorrry. It just felt like the singing would never end.

And how everything ends is soul crushing. Like if you don’t believe that the universe is sometimes very cruel, I’d give you Peoples Exhibit A. - Sad and Horrendous, and I feel guilty for hating the music. 🥺

sorry i’ve not been on much. miss you all dearly. just need to rant right now. sometimes tumblr acts as a journal of sorts, you know?

being in the closet is hard.

my grandpas visited this past week, and my dad’s dad laughed and said that he’s referring to his grandkids by numbers now (ex gc 1, gc 2) because they keep changing their names and he’s “not going to call Andrew, Athena, [he] just won’t!” (I’m referring to my amab cousin, Andrew, with that name but they/them pronouns because I’m not clear on what they go by right now, and I wasn’t even aware that they were reassessing their gender identity. the outing of Andrew when they themselves have not told us is also frustrating, just not what is particularly aggravating to me at the moment)

anyway, i mentioned it today to my family because it’s been on my mind a lot. casually, i said that my grandpa was a little mean over the weekend, and that it’s hard to comprehend how a gay person could be transphobic. and both my parents sort of launched into defending him, about how he wasn’t being transphobic just that he was laughing about all the changes and how andrew has apparently changed their name a few times and gone back and forth. i mentioned that he was apparently mean and unsupportive when my other cousin, ethan, started transitioning (ethan was afab and started socially transitioning at 13 and has recently started medically transitioning at 15). so then my parents began talking all this shit about how he had a reasonable concern given ethan’s age etc etc. (i didn’t mention the fact that my grandpa’s skepticism and rudeness about ethan were pretty ridiculous as he has played a very small role in ethan’s life despite the fact that he’s his grandpa, and hurtful bc the person who is raising him is his ex-wife (my dad’s mom) and a lot of his “concern” just seemed to be a question of my grandma’s judgement and ability to raise ethan. which is AGAIN even more ridiculous given how hard raising ethan has been! he has a plethora of learning disabilities and has been dealing with severe mental health issues (self-harm, suicide attempts) for the last few years, none of which my grandpa can even come close to understanding bc, again, he has played such a small role - I see Ethan MAYBE 3 times a year and that’s STILL more than our grandpa))

anyway, this was all hurtful enough, to have all of these pieces overlooked, but especially when my dad’s final defense of my grandpa was this: “he’s a part of this community and has an insight and perspective that none of us can understand.” listen, i value the fact that my dad sees queer knowledge and experience as something valuable, but that doesn’t mean it can never be questioned and challenged; not every queer person is actually a part of the community. transphobic queer people exist! case in point. anyway, the worst part was just the assumption that all of us at the table are straight. i hurt more than i thought. i want to be myself! shouldn’t it be easy to come out to my family when my grandpa is gay? when i have (potentially) two trans cousins? but the micro aggressions are like slashes in my confidence, and the unsteady attempts at being accepting of queer identities (but not going so far as feeling like we need to be more actively and openly supportive, and certainly being confused and kind of disgusted by those that reject the gender binary) make me feel out of place.

i’m bi. i think it’s a lot easier than coming out as gay, or trans, or gender-fluid/queer etc. to straight, cis people, i’m still “half-straight” and i’m still conforming to gender norms. so i feel dumb for being so scared to come out. my family is more supportive than many out there. im lucky in that regard. but i feel like im already fighting to educate them on so many things (the current issue: cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation) that i can’t handle trying to teach them how to handle having a queer kid too. i can’t be the guinea pig (more than i already am #oldestchild). so i stay in the closet at home and beg for the semester to start sooner so i can go back to my safe, queer friends at school where i am out.

Since you know what Homestuck is, I'm really curious to hear what your thoughts are about it. Do you have a favorite character?

Personally, I would consider Kankri Vantas my favorite— Although he gets misrepresented in the fandom pretty often as a good or genuine person LMFAO... When will we all admit he is an asshole who sucks!! And I like him despite it!

I think it's actually an unpopular opinion to like most of the dancestors because in canon they were badly written and a lot of them are just unlikeable. you kinda have to put in effort to like some of them.. i'm fond of them bc the bad two dimensional writing makes them near blank slates. You can give them as much depth as you want! i guess i technically did put effort into liking them, i just had to make up details that made them likeable first BAHAHA

I probably only favor Kankri because I've dedicated the most time to overthinking him, and overthinking Beforan culture in relation to him. At this point it's probably more accurate to say that my favorite character is My Specific Version of Kankri Vantas rather than Kankri Vantas as he's taken at face value in the webcomic. 🤷 oh well. i am not immune to fanon pitfalls. at least i don't woobify him

Anyways, If I had to pick a more important or popular favorite it'd be a tie between Dave and Nepeta. Of course there's Davepetasprite^2, but I think it would kinda be cheating to pick them. Dave's emotional arc and overall character growth hits me hard somewhere personal, and as for Nepeta... Well, I just like the spunky cat warrior. sometimes you can keep it simple

I guess I'm pretty fond of Kankri, partly because I like him as a foil for Davepetasprite^2. Dave and Kankri have the same kind of relationship in that they are both the kind of person for whom I feel a bit guilty because I'm not sure what to make of them, but it's easy to imagine being Dave-like being the best possible outcome. I think I've written about this before but I could probably spend more time thinking about Kankri in particular.

The thing about the characters which is most interesting to me is not who they are, but how the author presents them to us. For the sake of comparison I want to point out a similarity with Hussie's other work: how much I relate to Lilo and Stitch. I get a good deal of what they are saying about childhood, parents, parents' mistakes, and all of this is presented in a very emotionally affecting way which makes it quite hard to distance yourself from it even when you are an adult with an adult's perspective on it. The same thing, at least at times, happens with Homestuck. The characters are well-developed, I can even understand some of the things they are going through or being accused of, but my reaction is still this "holy shit! holy shit!" moment like you describe with Lilo and Stitch. I feel like we are inside a mind, one of the characters' minds, from their perspective. It's their experience of the world, and it has been filtered through some of the deepest and most painful psychological themes.

If we think of the characters as a story (and they do have stories, sort of?), there's this other element I often find very resonant as well: I feel that the authors must have put a lot of themselves into the characters. It's weird to try and be objective about this (I tend to find that very difficult), but there's a kind of internal life to them. They're not totally separate from us, they're not inhuman, and their emotional reactions make some amount of sense, even as they feel "ridiculous" or "absurd." It's like they were written in a first person style, and sometimes the story just is happening in their heads.

I really, really like Andrew Hussie's art, too, and he seems like someone who does something similar – this weird mixture of seeming inhuman or inhuman-like (which, as we've discussed before, can be a double-edged sword) and a strong internal sense of perspective and emotion. But the Lilo and Stitch movie feels very different from Homestuck, while the characters are very similar. This kind of goes for a lot of his work, honestly – there's not a lot I can say for Homestuck in particular.

(Not counting all of the "real people" we meet, there are only four humans in the entire story. One of these (John Egbert) is literally a robot. There are various troll characters, who are sort of "humanoids," and some robots, but there's not much of an idea of a "troll culture" or anything, the trolls are not a "culture" per se and are not really treated as fully fictional characters. Then there is Vriska Serket, who is clearly, as you say, a very human character, but is treated as a semi-humanoid, semi-fictional character, in much the same way we are treated with Homestuck characters. She has very strong personality, is very popular, but the fact that she "loves to dance" and "cries real tears" is an element that is made to seem ridiculous in a way that feels very intentional. We are, in a sense, on the sidelines of this story. I don't know if there's a human in the story, or even many human-like characters in the story)
