just got the time to start the sunshine court and I'm Vibrating out of my skin

#i did not think it was possible for me to like a character this much three chapters into a book #i might actually end up liking Jean better than Neil which is saying a Lot #something about a character whose route to survival had to be giving in and staying small instead of fighting back or running away #something about a character who has been taught to lock up their emotions for years or suffer the consequences #something about a character who is resigned to what happens to them because that's the only way they can survive in their environment #I am desperately hoping that Jean learns how to be ANGRY outwardly without permission.#I need that boy to be able to Rage out loud and do it MESSY #because I'm not convinced he's going to be able to really smile until he does #Also I'm really appreciating both the Renee and Thea content we've desperately needed more of both of them and they showed up so quick #privately hoping both stay present for a while but tbh i'm just excited for where this is headed #Anyways I also just fixated on Jean Moreau then discovered that (SPOILERS) he's 19???? Almost the same age as me??? hate riko hate riko HAT #anyway sorry riko enjoyers i know he's Complicated but I never liked him in the first place #and this book is making me look forward to his death even more than I did when I first read aftg. So.#listen i know he has Issues. I know Ichirou killing him without a second thought is probably the cruelest way that he personally can die #I also want him dead and gone. One thing that I know for sure is that if Renee was a man Jerejean wouldn't be so popular and a lot of people would be sad that Jeanee is not end game.

I thought of it the day Lazarus came out and people on twitter went crazy "discovering" that they are a couple, that they have real feelings, that Renee really cared for Jean (Most people probably ignored the fact that they were already something in canon).

Don't take me wrong, I like JereJean as an end game couple, I feel like it's good for Jean to have someone who can show him the brightness of the world because he never saw the true darkness in it and is so far from the horrible things that Jean lived that he can talk (or not) about it how he wants and Jeremy would listen. Also I'm a sucker for emo x preppy ships.

But I just know that maybe if Renee wasn't a girl maybe TSC wouldn't even exist (as I know that part of the fuel for Nora to make peace with the writing was the impact the story had on people) or maybe it would anyways because there was still something to tell about them but it would be totally different... or maybe this version always was in Nora's mind but people would have been so mean because "Why is this man who is nobody and came out of the blue getting in the middle of this perfect couple??" And maybe she wouldn't want to share it with us.

For me is so weird that a fandom with so many women in it hates female characters so much that are happy to gaslight themselves to errase their participation in canon or to make it a completely different thing (as happens with Thea) just to have another m/m ship.

And I know Renee is a very liked character in general and this story contributed to her popularity, and maybe the people that follows me here or who would read this post already thought highly of her, but anyways this was in my head for the last few days and wanted to share it.

P. S: This applies too for when Nora said she and Andrew were fuckbuddies if it were a man there wouldn't have been so many hate to that idea (like people usually don't hate Roland specifically for this, maybe some do for the age difference but that's another talk).

Okay my hopes and dreams for TSC before it comes out:

jean being grumpy af the first few weeks with the trojans. He can't take their brightness nor kindness and is just in a constant state of wtf??

jeremy being a lil sunshine boy. He sure will have some story to his character but I really hope it's not too fucked up, I can imagine him having a primary postive mindset, leaving jean dumbfounded all the time

jeremy and jean constantly moving tgt the first few weeks bc of the ravens fucked up duo-system (which is still in jeans head), at first it's a little obligatory for jeremy to make jean feel more save in the team but later on he just wants to be with him constantly

new friendships. I'm probably the most excited for the new characters because it's been a while since we got new characters from nora and yeah I love her characters (most of the time)

jean and renee friendship

jean and kevin. I'm ready for that angst.

at least one scene where jeremy calms jean down

I don't need to see much more of the foxes (I know for some a sin but I'm content with all the content we got about them already so i'm more excited for the new characters) BUT I truly NEED at least one scene where jean or jeremy are seeing andreil and be like "huh, that's love" or whatever else. Just a little acknowledgment of andreil as a couple since i'm always a sucker for that

oh i'm excited about the thea scene as well. I'm torn between wanting the scene to be with kevin or not. Bc on one hand i wanna see more of the kevin/thea dynamic but on the other I want to see her individually

I think that's it.

TSC Motifs/Themes/Whatever

Dogs

Starved dog, leash metaphors, cardboard dog, obedience. I think Jean represented as an obedient, loyal dog is pretty straight-forward. I think it's interesting that in the extra content, Nora described him as an angry cat when he came to Evermore. He left as a starved and beaten dog. I wonder where this arc goes, though. Like, he takes a chain around his neck from Renee -per Neil's philosophy, is this "collar" his first reason not to slip the [Moriyama investment] leash? Also Jeremy has always wanted a dog. I guess this piece is a little harder for me to wrap my head around, maybe I'm overthinking it, but maybe he's the right kind of [s]Dom[/s] [s]owner[/s] person for Jean. He has the authority "I'm your captain," but he pairs it with an equalizer "I'm your partner". He pushes Jean, but he holds the hard boundaries. He's intrigued by Jean's scoop neck deep blue shirt - I think partly for the personal growth to wear color and partly because it allows him to see Jean's collarbone. He shivers with the sound of "Yes, Jeremy." I wonder if "my mom is allergic to dogs" is foreshadowing his family's reaction to Jean.

2. Safety

Neil's arc was about hope, finding a future in a futureless situation. Jeremy's had an idea of the future, the perfect court, but his big thing is safety. "Safe" and its variations appear in TSC 48 times. This boy is really not asking for much, but Jeremy makes him feel safer which is just too sweet. Also, tighten those screws for safety..

3. Childhood

At the beginning of the book, Jean knows immediately that he is not in the Nest, because he knows every inch of it. He feels like he knows everything about the world and he often insults people by calling them children. His childhood innocence was stolen from him at the Nest, and outside of it, he regains pieces of it. He wonders at the vastness of the world, he learns skills he never had before (shopping, cooking). I had a hard time when I found out he was 19 (ie 14 and 16 at the time of some really unpleasant things). I didn't understand why he had to be two years younger. But the protection and corruption of innocence is a big part of his story. We see that acutely with his sister's story and it allows him to turn on his parents without guilt. The duck/duckling motif is cute too. When he first comes to Evermore, Thea describes him as a little duckling. He associates little yellow ducks with his childhood and baby sister.

4. Air?

Being able to breathe is core to the safety thing. When Jean feels least safe, he can't breathe. One of his earliest revelations about being Riko's pet was the buried alive punishment, and pressing his face against the sparse airholes. Then there's the waterboarding thing. You'll see Jean mentions being unable to breathe when he feels threatened and grabs at his throat. Conversely his happy things include breeze and open sky (rainbow and the open road). When Grayson appears, Jean says he can no longer feel the breeze, and he is particularly disturbed by the neck biting. There are lots of throat and neck things going on in the book too and maybe it's a stretch but burning (ie eating away at oxygen) comes up several times too.

Neil doesn't know what catches Andrew's attention, the clatter of Kevin's laptop across the carpet or an unfamiliar woman's voice, but he materializes in the doorway a second later. He looks from Thea to Kevin and back again and doesn't intervene. Neil shouldn't be surprised; Renee only knew about Thea and Kevin's relationship because Andrew knew about it. Andrew knows Thea isn't a real threat to anyone here. Thea is less accepting and swivels her stare to Andrew. "You get out, too." Andrew stares back at her like she hasn't even spoken.

i just want you to know that I've started watching The Fantastic Race (I'd never heard of it before) and i too cannot stop imagining Andreil in it.. but also a Foxes/Exy only edition.

like, one is Foxes only, 10 teams, either with some of the freshmen, or while Seth is still alive/in an AU where he survives.

one is Andreil against other Americans where they dominate everything

and one is Andreil, Kevin/jeremy, riko/jean, and some other teams from other American Exy teams

I do love me some Amazing Race. I think I could give you a Miracle Year of Collegiate Exy version of the Amazing Race.

I think maybe after their initial run through and victory Neil and Andrew are like absolute fan favorites and even though Neil, Andrew, nor the show ever say it there is a general belief that Neil and Andrew got together BECAUSE of the show. Any follow-up publicity on it has Neil and Andrew just staring at the camera like "Are u for fucking real?"

The thing with these shows is that fan favorites get asked to go back ALL the time and Neil gets a lot of very lucrative sponsorships that make the Moriyamas VERY happy after it.

They offer the same deal, a cut on the % that they will take from earnings and this time it's just for competing and this time it's a deal given to. They want the Miracle Generation of the Foxes to come and if every one does then Ichirou will lower Neil, Jean, and Kevin's %s owed to 50% (Maybe the deals are that good, maybe Ichirou is a big fan of the show, maybe he has a finger in it's production. This is mostly just like rationale on why the fuck they'd all do this. Especially Neil and Andrew since like Andrew had a bad time on those planes).

Either way not a single Fox disagrees. Arrangements are made for everyone's kids / pets. Shit is talked.

but we’re back now with tumblr’s favorite show: AFTG Hot Takes, where i spew paragraphs and paragraphs of bullshit instead of working on my WIP.

without any further ado, i am proud to present: every AFTG ship, ranked.

this is your friendly reminder that these are just my opinions. if you like a ship i don’t: great! if you don’t like a ship that i love: also great! i’m always happy to hear people’s thoughts, and i love a good friendly debate, but please remember that i’m 17. i’m not here to argue with you about why your ship is the best. i’m just here to have fun.

these probably aren’t all the ships that are out there, but this is everything i’ve seen so far. if i missed one, let me know!

24. Jean/Riko

this one… ew. ew ew ew. every ship with riko is so ew, i cannot begin to explain, but this one is the worst.

i’ve read too many Nest fics to not gag at this tag, cause it’s never consensual.

y’all know i hate this ship by now, but for newcomers: it’s predatory and neglectful. very very ick.

this one… where to start?

i’ll probably make a full post ab it soon, so for now, let’s just say that it’s very similar to Kevin/Thea. The age gap at the time that things started between them… the morals and legality are murky at best.

i’ve said it once, and i’ll say it again: they. aren’t. good. for. each. other.

Kevin doesn’t respect boundaries. he pushes things. and boundaries are the absolute most important thing for Andrew. they just don’t work.

i very vehemently despise this ship, for the same reason i hate Andrew/Kevin. i think it’s so important for y’all to remember who these characters are and not just ship them because they all have dicks and are nice to each other sometimes. that turns into mlm fetishization real fuckin quick.

18. Neil/Kevin

this is one that i can almost sort of see. if i hadn’t accidentally spoiled andreil for myself, i would have assumed this was canon during my first read.

but it’s just… i love the fact that they’re friends. i think their friendship can be so amazing, and i love reading fics where they’re that close. i don’t think every friendship in media has to turn romantic.

17. Kevin/Jean/Jeremy

remember what i said about kevandreil? apply it to this one too.

ik it sounds like i just hate poly couples. i don’t. i just hate ships like this, that really wouldn’t be healthy but people put together anyway because oh gay people yay! it feels gross and fetish-y and i am not here for it.

16. Kevin/Jean

this is a ship that i can see happening pre-canon, but i’m not the biggest fan of it simply because there’s no way it could be healthy. they went through a lot together, sure, but traumabonds are notoriously unhealthy.

15. Kevin/Matt

this, again, feels like just putting two characters together because they’re nice to each other occasionally, but really? they aren’t. correct me if i’m wrong, but Matt and Kev only have one canon interaction that i can remember, and it’s literally Matt punching Kev in the face.

Not to mention, Dan and Matt. Dan and Matt! i love them too much to accept this.

14. Kevin/Matt/Aaron

listen. again, i don’t hate poly couples. i really, really don’t. i just…

Matt literally… just doesn’t mesh well with Kev or Aaron. at all? i don’t understand the thought process behind this.

13. Renee/Jean

i don’t… i don’t hate this one. i just don’t like it. i feel like both Renee and Jean have wayyy better ships (not to spoil anything, but they both make top 5 in different ships)

i don’t think they’re awful, per se, i just don’t really see the chemistry.

12. Allison/Seth

this is an unpopular opinion, i know. but i’ve read a few “Seth lives” fics that redeem him, so i can’t hate him. i can’t, you can’t make me.

believe me, i don’t like it either, but i don’t run this city, the rats do.

anyway, it’s not awesome and i like Ally’s other options better, but it could be good! it could be great! i read too much redemption fanfic!

11. Kevin/Jeremy

i’ll be honest, it’s not my favorite to read when Jean is also in a fic, but if we’re talking in general?

i adore. fics where Kev is falling all over himself trying to talk to Jer are my bread. and. fucking. butter. quicksand has destroyed me. absolutely ruined me.

10. Aaron/Katelyn

starting off the top ten with one of my favorite minor characters ever, this ship is up here because i love Kate so much.

i read too much fanfiction, i know, but i just think she’s so cool?

honestly, i really don’t think Aaron deserves her. she’s that cool. i love her so much. that’s my lady. my babygirl. simply adore.

9. Abby/Wymack/Betsy

i like this one, i really do. all the Fox parents together? it’s perfect. i love it. enough said.

8. Kevin/Allison

listen. i’ve said i didn’t get it before, but honestly? i change my mind. i like this one. i like it a lot.

their personalities would mesh so well. they’re both dramatic, they’d be the funniest fucking couple in the world. i like it a lot.

7. Abby/Wymack

it’s a classic. i ship it, you ship it, the Foxes ship it too. we all ship it. they’re made for each other, and that’s all i have to say.

6. Matt/Dan

if you don’t like this one, you’re lying. they are. the definition. of love.

they’re so cute? so cute? i have no words?

5. Nicky/Erik

god, these two.

if you know me at all, you know i have a soft spot for Nicky. i relate to his story so much, and i hate how dirty Nora did him.

but god, these two. they are love. they are perfect.

4. Kevin/Aaron

i love this one. you know i love this one. everyone knows i love this one.

they’re both assholes, and they’re both hurt in different ways, and i love when they heal together. when they help each other and lean on each other and just- ugh.

i like watching them heal, and i like watching them do it together. (plus best friend’s brother anyone?? a classic trope)

3. Renee/Allison

i love them so much. i love them so much.

they balance each other out so well? they’re so perfect for each other?

also, we need more wlw couples in media in general, and especially in this series.

i love them so much.

2. Jean/Jeremy

you know. you know i love this one (thank you Hoax, and thank you gus_47. you have ruined my sleep schedule and i have never been happier)

grumpyxsunshine, guys. healing together. i love when people heal together. i love it

also, round of applause to us in the fandom for creating an incredibly popular ship between two people who literally never interact in canon. we did that. i love that for us.

I just. I’m never going to understand Kevin’s happy ending being that he ends up with Thea

Thea, who shows up after Kevin makes the terrifying decision to announce part of the abuse he suffered on television in a way that for the first time directly implicates his abuser, and is speaking in a way Neil describes as “angry and mocking” about what Kevin just did

Kevin says “If you’re going to believe me, you need to see Jean first” and Thea does not deny needing to be convinced. Meaning the implication is that Thea is fully aware of the extent of abuse the normal Ravens dealt with, and when hearing that her ex who escaped in the middle of the night did so because of a severe injury given to him by a teammate her reaction is to show up and need to be given a reason to believe him, the abuse victim, and she’s clearly angry at him the entire time she’s demanding evidence of his abuse

There also is an implication with how she talks that she is angry Kevin did not tell her these things himself, even though, again, her reaction was to get angry at Kevin and need to be given a reason to believe he actually was abused

And it’s been confirmed that Thea will always view herself as a Raven, the thing Kevin risked his life to escape, and that she views Kevin’s life of abuse as “no harm no foul” because the abuser died and the horrific physical and mental injuries didn’t stop him from playing the sport

I just. How is that a good ending for Kevin? That he escaped an abusive cult and spends the rest of his life with someone still connected to the cult who views the direct abuse he got from the cult leader as basically a wash because he’s still playing the sport and the cult leader is dead now?

I mean just have it be like Allison or Renee where he marries a woman he meets after the books end, someone who represents the future he chose and not the abusive past he had to endure and then escape. I just don’t see how him ending up with someone who thinks the cult he barely escaped from with his life was ultimately not that bad and she’s proud to have been a part of it is in any way happy for him.

It just feels like Kevin is never actually going to be able to escape his past and he’s going to spend his life with someone skeptical of his experiences after spending years with the Foxes and specifically Andrew whose views are “you are never at fault for what other people did to you, you can always move forward, it’s never too late to leave and be happy, there will always be someone who can see what happened to you and believe the best of you and want to support you moving forward”

Why make him a fan of the Trojans, whose culture is the exact opposite of the Ravens, and not at least pair him off with someone there? Have one of the women they play against in that game approach him with compassion like Renee does to Jean? He has a daughter he forces to play Exy even though she doesn’t want to, that she views it as being forced into a life she never wanted but ultimately it’s fine because she meets their expectations. Like that just sounds like Kevin physically and mentally goes back to the place he was in before and does to his kid some of what was done to him, that he makes his child so miserable she becomes an “emotional nightmare” but it’s written off as fine because she plays well, similar to how Kevin having no choice in life and being treated horrifically was ok because it made him play well

#I just need to keep reminding myself if it’s not on the page it’s not real and you can decide for yourself what happens off the page #you cut two pages from this book and you make it so much better #why give Kevin an ending like this #it’s like having Neil end up with someone in the mafia why connect Kevin to someone from that part of his life #especially when he’s a fan of the Trojans and they represent the exact opposite culture from the ravens #aftg #all for the game

so I'm currently rehearsing for an orchestral concert this weekend and I can't stop thinking about an orchestral au for the foxes

obviously wymack as the conductor (do you americans call them directors?)

dan as the principal violinist, she's got the drive and competitivity I associate with violinists plus leading the whole orchestra. literally imagine her playing the violin solos in rimsky-korsakov's scheherazade!!

allison as a cellist, literally the most beautiful instrument (maybe I'm biased) but also a little outside the norm. maybe viola but I really can't see her as anything other than a string player.

renee as a bassoonist, unusual and unique instrument! also bass instruments fit her cool and calm vibe like she's the rock of the orchestra (2nd bassoon most important player supremacy) - could also be double bass maybe.

matt as a violinist too, maybe leader of the second violins. this was the hardest for me to decide but again, like dan, he's a leader but also a great team player, and the role of the seconds is to support and balance the firsts and he'd be perfect.

seth as a percussionist for obvious reasons! but also the juxtaposition between him on the bass drum or cymbals or gong vs the triangle or vibraphone or something lol.

nicky on trumpet because he's so extroverted and energetic, I can imagine the conductor telling him to be quieter like every brass player gets told but then really going for it when he gets the chance.

aaron as a bassist. honestly just because the size difference would be hilarious. but actually I promise I've put more thought into it.

andrew as an oboist, listen maybe it's not a perfect match for his vibe but the oboe is v important in the orchestra as it tunes everyone else and also imagine him playing the most beautiful solos just completely deadpan while his face goes bright red (oboist problems). also consider visiting piano soloist?

kevin as a flautist. he's ultra competitive, thinks he's better than everyone else, and can probably actually follow through with that. also kinda elitist. can you tell what I think of flute players?

which leads to neil as a flautist who also plays piccolo! maybe he started out as a clarinettist who thinks flautists are attention seeking but picked up the flute super quickly in high school and secretly loves the piccolo.

plus of course everyones favourite side characters. consider jeremy and jean on french horn, alvarez as a trombonist, laila on viola, katelyn as a clarinettist, thea as the harpist, etc.

then! riko comes in to play a flute concerto with the orchestra...

This whole Thea thing made me reflect about Kevin and Neil's relationship in canon and why we don't really hear about her before Renee tells Neil that Kevin has a gf.

All Neil know (and therefore all we know) about Kevin's past is said by others. The media, other Foxes, Wymack, Kathy, etc. They didn't really had a heart to heart conversation about Kevin's life at the Nest, maybe some things exy related and that's it (I'm gonna come back to this in a sec).

And I think that's okay.

Neil himself doesn't talk with others (except Andrew and a little to Wymack) about his past either before Baltimore forced him to. And I feel like it was the same with Kevin in the way he hwd to told his story once when he joined the Foxes to make them trust him and also to protect them. Neil obviously wasn't in that conversation.

Kevin has trauma too and his own history with mafia and the Moriyamas that he doesn't wanna/need to tell everyone or relieve. In that past is Thea too. He probably told the team about her in that conversation because he's not close to Renee to tell just her and nobody else says anything when Thea arrives, they know who she is.

Also. Hope you remember I said I was comming around to Kevin and Neil basically talking just exy related stuff, well, I could do another very long post abou what I think of Kevin's relationship with exy, but for now I'm just saying he used it to avoid every other thing happening in the world and to communicate through it. Just like Neil does, like Andrew tells him in the awful talk they had. This two boys say a lot of things while talking "just about the game", their silence speaks volumes.

Kevin and Thea's BIOMY Home

Guess who's computer broke down? Thankfully, my sims save was backed up and I could retake the last screenshots needed!

For Kevin and Thea I picked a more modern/industrial look because I think that they value functionality a lot with their Raven upbringing (also I wanted to build houses in different styles).

Downstairs we have an open plan that can eventually be closed down, with a little play nook for John since Thea mentions she likes to keep an eye on him while cooking. They also got two cars, since they're both playing in different teams.

Upstairs we have a small laundry room right by the stairs, the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and closet on the left side, and in the middle a guest bedroom. On the right we see John's room, a shared bathroom, and the office space/place where Kevin sleeps when he's snoring too much.

The entrance is at an open landing, with their many medals and trophies right where you leave your keys, because why not? They have an enourmous TV for when Wymack visits and watches games with them (and yes, you can see a portrait of Kevin with Andrew and Neil at the Olympics in the living room)

They have a big kitchen and, don't worry, the wine bottles are purely decorative. John's space has a lot of drawings, because I figured this could be a cute way for him to express himself since he doesn't talk, and everything is space themed because Freddie's room used up most of the other items (special attention to the gallery wall, please. I just know Kevin and Thea are the hottest couple in Exy history)

Kevin and Thea's bedroom and bathroom follow the same style as the house, but I think even with all the brick and metal it looks cozy! The door by the mirror is the one that leads to the bathroom, which you have to cross to get to their shared closet (the door seen by the toilet).

John's room follow the space theme, and is one of the few spaces I could fit tinted windows. I can see this space evolving to a really cool teen bedroom when he grows up!

And finally, the other upstairs spaces. I know the bathroom mat is a basketball court, but let's all pretend is an Exy one. There's also a bunch of city posters around the house, I put them up as if they were photographs Kevin took while traveling. And of course the office carries not only their first Court uniforms, but more trophies, because they're good enough to have a B-list selection of their awards.

have had this ideal for Quite a While for a Kandrew djats Au (more going off book plots and scenes since I started thinking of this in 2020 second time I read it, but specific show stuff and especially some of the songs work for them too ) with Andrew as Daisy Kevin as Billy Wymack as Teddy Dan as Karen Matt as Graham Renee as Simone Seth as Eddie. either Thea or Jeremy could be Camila Thea works canonically and Jeremy is a fit personality wise either could work

(show songs that work for Kandrew: Kill You To Try, Two Against Three, You Were Gone, The River

I don’t think Neil fits into this Au imo but Let Me Down Easy and Type of Guy and It Was Always You all work as andreil songs. And You Were Gone works for them too

lots of book songs work for Kandrew but most obviously This Could Get Ugly, and if you changed Impossible Woman to Impossible Man could totally be Kevin writing about Andrew “he’s blues dressed up as rock n roll untouchable he’ll never fold .. walk away from the impossible you’ll never touch him etc.

(first thought of this honestly because an emphasis in the book is on Daisy’s natural talent vs Billy’s more studied approach and how this plays into tension in their creative collaborations and also just the way they view each other/relationship, also just a lot of themes in both dynamics I’m drawn to the repression pining, passionate/volatile arguments but then tender moments, sort of the way everyone in the band + the other foxes view ‘whatever they have going on’c the addiction interplay piece could work for Kandrew if adjusted for fit then, also feel like there are similar themes for the chars just in general but I might be delusional about some of the other parallels so. Just laying all this out so anyone who wants to do something with this can <3)
