"How does it feel to bring home a gold medal for your country, again?" the interviewer asks and a big grin appears on your face.
"I mean, i love the sport and I've worked hard to get where I am. I think this year there were many other contestants who also deserved gold and everyone who took part today were amazing!" you keep smiling, it had been a really amazing set for you today. You'd even broke some records while here.
"And now what is your plan?" they ask holding the mic closer to you.
"Well my husband is waiting for me, just over there. So i think he wants to give me his congratulations" you say pointing out our stoic looking husband who was waiting in the background, keeping to himself watching the world go past.
"Ah yes, Kimi Raikkonen! The Ice Man, who arguably married Queen of the Ice" he jokes making you laugh a little. You had heard similar jokes many times since you'd married Kimi.
"Yes, obviously being here in South Korea for the Winter Olympics has been amazing, and I'll be sure to train hard for 2022 but now I'm needed to go support my lovely lovely husband in his fast cars" you exclaim, knowing that the Australian Grand Prix was round the corner.
"Ah yes, it's looking like a good season for Ferrari! And we can tell from your outfit today they already have your support"
"My support is for whatever team my husband is in, so Ferrari have had my support since Kimi has raced with them!"
You left the interview thanking your team before finding Kimi waiting for you quietly.
"Home?" you ask and he nods silently grabbing your hand and pulling you out of the arena.
"You were fantastic today!" he smiles, holding you and pulling you into a kiss.
"Yeah? You liked the new twist i did?" you ask, your routine today being one of the hardest you'd ever done. You mascara had infact started to run, from the sweat building on your forehead throughout the day.
"I like everything you do"
You guys both went back to the hotel, packing up all of your gear that had been here for the past month you'd stayed in Korea for. Once you were sure you hadn't left anything behind you made your way to the airport.
Kimi now only had a month until Australia, his personal trainer had come with you to Korea to help him train while he was out there supporting you.
Now, you'd train while you were travelling with Kimi. Finding ice while on the road with him was always difficult, but finding places to just work out and keep your fitness up was never hard as you'd train alongside Kimi. It was one of the ways to spend extra time with him during the season when he was most busy.
In the free month before Australia you started your research on where you could go in Melbourne to skate, you found somewhere that Kimi was happy with you going too as it wasn't too far from the hotel you'd be staying in or the race track for if anything went wrong.
"Will you watch me on the Sunday though?" he'd asked you as you were both lying in bed the night before you were due to fly to Australia.
"When have I ever not?" you ask, turning over in bed to look at him.
"Hmmm, I can for sure think of one time..." he smirks looking over you.
"If your talking about China, almost 10 years ago that doesn't even count!" you laugh, poking his cheek a little.
Your husband never failed to amaze you, his striking blue eyes and his soft blonde hair was what initially drew you in. But it was your first interaction with him that made you fall for him fully.
It was the Autumn of 2008 and you were 22 and you had just won your second Gold Medal in China, you'd stayed there for the months after the games as they left the Beijing Olympic Park open and it seemed like a good place to stay and to train.
You managed to get tickets to other sporting events in the months you stayed there such as Snow Boarding, Golf but the best one was when the Chinese Grand Prix came about.
You were active on the socials you had back then, and so it wasn't hard for Sauber BMW to reach out to you and give you a guest pass.
You'd been walking round the paddock, just investigating when you'd bumped right into the Finnish Ferrari driver. He had just stared at you while holding a tight grip on your wrist so you didn't fall over.
You remember him asking if you were okay, and some other questions that you hadn't heard fully as your brain had gone foggy at the sound of his soft, yet deep voice.
It was a little embarrassing, when he'd tried to speak Finnish to you, and then decided on English, but with no reply he was left stumped and awkwardly standing there.
He'd soon left after that but you were on each other's minds for the whole day. You tried to keep up conversations with the BMW drivers Robert and Nick but your mind kept drifting the the Finnish Driver for Ferrari.
He found you after the race, and just stared at you for a while before you made the first move speaking to him. And the rest was history.
You spent the next 5 years together as partners, it was convenient for someone like Kimi who raced all through the year apart from summer and winter to end up with someone in a sport who only competed for a month in the summer and winter. It meant that they also still got a break with each other.
After 5 years, Kimi let the big question unload and now you'd been married for 5 years.
"Of course, my love! You know that!" you smile, pulling him closer to you. You tuck yourself into his surprisingly warm embrace, considering his nickname was 'Iceman' he was the warmest person you'd ever had the privilege of meeting.
"I was thinking ..." he breathes, his voice a little higher and whiny than normal.
"Mmmmm, you don't do that often?" you tease, a hand running up and down his back.
"Well, I'm the ice man, your the Ice Queen... i was thinking maybe it's time we have an Ice Baby?" he whispers in the softest most unsure tone you'd ever heard.
"You think now's a good time?" you ask, and thinking about it... it was. You yourself had two years before the next Olympics in 2020, and Kimi was at a point in his career where he could leave and live comfortably if he needed and wanted to.
"I haven't told you this, but they want the Sauber kid in my spot. I'll be going to Alpha Romeo next year. I feel like I've done what i can and I've had my time in the sport... and we aren't getting any younger. Especially me..." he jokes, being 44 now.
"Mmmmmm I think now is the perfect time" you smile.
Flash forward to the Austin Grand Prix and you were 6 months pregnant. You'd already announced it and so many people were excited for you and Kimi, through the season he had loads of interviews. All against his will of course but people saw a different side to him when he talked about you and the soon to be baby.
It was a great race for Kimi in Austin, he pulled through with his first win of the season, valuable points that helped contribute towards his position in the drivers standings.
"So Kimi, first win of the season today! How are you feeling?" an interviewer asks, he was sat in a panel with some of the other drivers in a debrief.
"It was good to get a win, this season has been tough. We've had an interesting year with veteran drivers like myself, Seb, Fernando and Lewis being pushed by newer or younger drivers who are proving to be good competition like Charles, Max and Pierre" he answers.
"There have been rumors that you wont be here with us next season?" he pushes and Kimi roles his eyes.
"If I'm not it's not an issue... racing is my hobby that i get paid to do. I'll leave when i want to" he admits without letting anything slip that Ferrari wouldn't want to come public knowledge.
"Lets move on to you Lewis..."
And for the rest of the interview all he could think of was coming back to you.
Once your daughter was born in January before the start of the 2019 season and Kimi moving to Alfa Romeo everyone on the grid wanted to meet her. So of course, you were obligated to come to Australia for pre-season testing. Your 3 month old being so intrigued at the busy rush of everything around her.
She was a fan and driver fav around. Everyone had a picture with her and introduced themselves as her uncle and that they would look after her. People like Lewis, Seb and Charles all came with little gifts for her, Seb even had someone make her a custom team Ferrari top so she could fit in with her father and her Uncle Sebastian.
"Today was amazing!" you sighed as you leaned into your husband who currently held your daughter against his bare chest.
"Mmmm, I think you should both take a break though, at least until Summer break and join me afterwards" he smiles, knowing that the heavy time change from Monaco to Australia wasn't good for your or the baby.
"Well, I may as well come to Bahrain with you... its on the way back. But I will leave after that" you smile, pulling him in for a kiss.
"I love you, thank you for giving me this life" he smiles looking between you and his daughter.
"I wouldn't have it any of way" you grin.

Team Trinity & Mario at the Olympic Winter Games: The Great Snow Spirit Rescue
@smashingveteransandnewcomers
After the Olympic Games in Beijing, Japan in Rock's world, our heroes eagerly awaited the next four years for the Olympic Winter Games taking place in Vancouver, Canada. Though somewhere in Vancouver was a place called Christmas Village and surrounding it were a series of towns that all had their designated Snow Spirits that helped make things snow for the Olympics. Things were going fine until a familiar group of baddies made their appearance
"I have a reading on the Snow Spirit! They're close!" Shelly said
"Excellent! Once we capture it, we can use its power to host our own Olympic Winter Games and take home the gold for ourselves!" Eggman laughs

Chronology of events for my post-canon 200k+ Yuri!!! on Ice fic series
One inevitability of writing such a massive post-canon Yuri!!! on Ice fic series that spans 5 years -- including 2 different Olympic Games (2018 PyeongChang Games and the 2022 Beijing Games) -- is that I've found myself at times struggling with second-guessing the continuity of events that I've built into my fic-verse ('Gold's On The Inside, Elevated My Feet'). This is especially the case b/c in my series, the 2018 Winter Olympics were marked by a scandal (note: not doping) that catalyzed a ton of events that followed in the realm of Yuuri and Viktor's relationship, and in the world of elite/competitive figure skating in general.
It got me thinking recently that it might be helpful to post the chronology of events (both personal, as well as the sports politics-related) that I've been working from, beginning from the time Viktor was born. My hope is to post this soon as part 6 of the series, and prior to uploading Chapter 15 (which, if you're new to my work, will detail the Men's Singles Short Program at the 2022 Beijing Games).
Other authors that have worked on stories spanning multiple big events or time periods: how do you manage to keep everything consistent and ensure that your continuity remains throughout? And, have you found it helpful to share your timeline of events in some kind of listed chronology for your readers?
I think I've been doing a decent job so far, but every so often I'm like "Oh wait, damnit, who did I write as the silver medalist as the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships, again?" or, "Hmmm...I originally noted that Yuuri and Viktor would move to Fukuoka, Japan in 'summer 2019', but when, specifically did I mean???"
And then I panic, worried that I've somehow contradicted myself somewhere LOL

Faster, Higher, Stronger
When Alex fails to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics, it’s all too easy to blame Henry Fox, the dual citizen who’d switched from Team GB to Team USA and snagged the last spot for men’s figure skating. After Alex is abruptly thrown back into the games, he forms an unexpectedly deep connection with Henry. But no athlete who aims for the top of the podium can afford any serious distractions. Will Alex be able to keep his flaring emotions in check and take home the Olympic gold medal he’s always aimed for?
This fic was such a fun story to work on! I love figure skating, to the point that I've actually written another (albeit much shorter) figure skating AU for First Prince previously.
'Faster, Higher, Stronger' was an idea I had in the lead-up to the 2022 Winter Olympics. I wanted to explore Alex and Henry as figure skating rivals unexpectedly competing for the same country, which meant the two of them could compete not only as rivals, but also together in the figure skating team event. It seemed like the perfect high-stakes sports competition type setting: plenty of room for a steamy rivalry, but at the same time with a part of the competition where they'd need to truly rely on each other. I think that's the part of a good rivalry that really does it for me - when it's revealed just how much they respect each other, despite how badly they want the other to lose.
I was originally not entirely sure how far into the games the narrative would stretch, which led to the expected chapter count going up a lot as I kept writing it. The further I got, the more I realised that I couldn't cut the plot off until all the medals had been awarded - and ultimately until I had explored Alex’s entire career in competitive figure skating.
Again, a lot of chapters.
Below the cut is an excerpt from the fic that illustrates how thrown Alex is by his feelings for Henry, and how desperate he is to not let that stop him from taking home the gold. I'll say nothing about how that works out for Alex, but I will say this: falling in love with your biggest rival makes for an interesting Olympic experience.
Also, fun fact: the figure skating costume I used as inspiration in the collage above was worn by Donovan Carrillo at the games in Beijing. Check out this feature on him and on this specific costume at Vogue Mexico!
Alex half-jogs back to his own room, thankfully without running into anyone he knows. He gets in the shower and stands under the warm spray for a long, long time.
This is fine. He’s fine. He just can’t let himself think too hard about it. He needs to focus one hundred percent on his training, which is why he’s going to do exactly that, and it’s all gonna be completely fucking fine. There’s no way in hell Alex is gonna let Henry beat him out for the individual gold just because he got caught up in a Henry-induced sexuality crisis. He can’t let that happen.
Alex gets out of the shower and puts on his pajamas, quickly falling into his nighttime routine of stretches and breathing exercises. Somehow, he almost manages not to think of Henry the whole time.
Almost.

Canadian Olympians push for opposition to Russians in Paris
March 8, 2023
A group of 42 retired Canadian Olympians urged the Canadian Olympic Committee to reject the idea of allowing Russians to participate in next year’s Paris Games unless Russia withdraws from Ukraine.
“We condemn recent public statements issued by the COC supporting the ‘exploration of a pathway’ for Russians and Belarusians to compete as ‘neutrals’ in the 2024 Paris Olympics,” the Canadians wrote in a statement released Wednesday.
Opening that door, the athletes said, “sends a message that the COC is no longer concerned with Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.”
Signing the statement was a who’s-who of Canadian Olympic greats and gold medalists, including Hayley Wickenheiser (hockey), Jenn Heil and Alex Bilodeau (freestyle skiing), Tessa Virtue (skating) and Beckie Scott (cross-country skiing).
Russian and Belarusian athletes have been largely excluded from international competition since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February. The International Olympic Committee seeks a pathway back for those athletes to compete without officially representing their countries, citing human-rights experts who argue the athletes should not be discriminated against solely because of their passports.
“Refusing their participation in international sport is not simply a matter of denying athletes a choice to compete because of their passport, it is a rejection of an unlawful and inhumane war and a recognition of the role international sports plays in geopolitics,” the Canadians wrote.
The COC has walked a fine line in staking out a position. Last month, secretary general David Shoemaker suggested athletes from the banned countries should be made to publicly speak out against the war to gain the neutral status they would need to participate.
Canada’s was also among a group of 35 governments that released a statement last month saying that, without clarity on a workable neutrality model, “we do not agree that Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition.”
Both the COC and the governments have stopped short of stating that Russians should not be allowed.
In their statement, the Canadian Olympians said a requirement for Russians to declare opposition to the war is “unfounded and out of touch.”
“For example, it is illegal in Russia to publicly denounce military actions abroad, and virtually impossible for high-profile athletes to oppose the war,” the statement said.
It also used instances in 2018 and 2021 when Russians could compete not under their country’s flag — but instead under the titles of “Olympic Athletes from Russia” and “Russian Olympic Committee” due to doping sanctions — as examples of how “separation of athlete from state is an impossible task.”
The letter also points out that the war began shortly after last year’s Winter Games in Beijing, which was highlighted by a high-profile meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping before the opening ceremony.
“The Beijing 2022 Games helped set the stage for and dictated the timing of the initial invasion, sports facilities in Ukraine have been targeted by the Russian attacks, and Russian athletes have been elevated to high-ranking military positions and used in war propaganda,” the letter said.
It concluded that “no pathway should be considered” for Russians or Belarusians to compete in Paris until Russia “fully withdraws from Ukraine.”

Beijing 2022 was the first time a city has hosted both a Winter and a Summer Olympics (which the city hosted in 2008). It was also the first time in Olympic history that the Olympic Games were held in consecutive years, because of the pandemic-related delay of the Tokyo 2020 Games to 2021. Beijing 2022 also marked both Haiti and Saudi Arabia's Winter Olympics debuts.
Mexico City 1968 was the first Olympics held in Latin America, the first in a Spanish-speaking country, and the Summer Games held at the highest elevation (at 2,240m/7,350ft). At these Games, American runners John Carlos and Tommie Smith (with support from fellow medalist, Australian Peter Norman) protested on the podium during their medal ceremony. Smith and Carlos held their black-gloved fists in the air to bring light to racial discrimination and violence against Black people.

February 21st 2002 saw the all-Scots curling team won gold at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, watched by over 5 million TV viewers in the wee small hours of the morning.
The team led by skipper Rhona Martin, clinched the title and a place in history with the last stone of the final end. Martin, backed by Fiona MacDonald, Margaret Morton, Janice Rankin and Debbie Knox, are the first British Winter Games gold medallists since Torvill and Dean back in 1984.Scottish curler Martin needed nerves of steel to knock out a Swiss counting stone at the climax of the final, but she managed to pull it off.Her own stone then finished up close to the centre of the rink and that was enough to seal a 4-3 triumph.
"I was just panicking on the last stone," Martin admitted afterwards.
"It was just a case of having faith that I could I do it.
"We had to keep it a close game to have a chance and we were always in control."
MacDonald added: "All the hard work we've put in has paid off.  We've been living in each other's pockets for nine months now and we know each other so well."
Martin had earlier fired the team into a narrow 2-1 lead at the close of the fifth end with a double after successfully taking out a Swiss counting stone. A mistake by the Swiss during end seven increased that advantage to 3-1 before they struck back to tie the scores with singles in ends eight and nine.
The four women were the  first Scots to win gold at a winter games since 1936.
Tumblr media
And we did it all again last year  in Beijing, with a dominant performance against Japan in the final.
Eve Muirhead’s team, also all Scots, naturally, led from the first end of the gold medal match, and continued that form throughout to win by a score of 10-3 and top the podium. Skip Muirhead, who won bronze in 2014, expertly controlled affairs throughout and finally has a gold medal at her fourth Olympics after returning from hip surgery.
Teammates Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, and Hailey Duff are champions at their first attempt.
“It’s a dream come true,” Muirhead, who shed a tear on the medal podium said “That was my third semi-final, and the two I lost were hard but I bounced back and here we are. We are Olympic champions. It’s such a special moment.”

Turkkila/Versluis: The Power Of Hard Work, Patience, And Perseverance
Tumblr media
When people think of Finnish figure skating, the names of single skaters such as Laura Lepistö and Kiira Korpi often come to mind. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, ice dance duo Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis made their mark in history. Affectionately called by Chinese skating fans as the "flower fairy pair,” Juulia and Matthias have proved the power of hard work, patience, and perseverance.
Juulia and Matthias were pleasantly surprised to learn that they have many fans in China. "It's great to know that we have fans in China! Thank you for supporting and believing in us. We are very happy to have visited China for the Olympic Games.”
Tumblr media
Reflecting on the season, Juulia and Matthias are very satisfied with their performance. "We showed the results of our training. This season has been a long one, and we have definitely made great progress over the past few months, especially in terms of performance."
Juulia and Matthias started the season with a big win at Nebelhorn Trophy, securing an Olympic spot for Finland in ice dance. Recalling this "life-or-death" competition, Juulia and Matthias said they didn’t feel extra pressure at the time. They put in a lot of work during the summer and were confident with their training.
Tumblr media
The Midnight Blues pattern in the rhythm dance was also the requirement in the 2016-17 season, the first season Juulia and Matthias competed as an ice dance team. Looking back on their first season as ice dancers, Juulia says: "It feels like a world away. Look at us. I was so unfamiliar with skating in hold, but we’ve come a long way since then!”
Juulia was the one who suggested the Hip Hop section. The pair sought to experiment with styles of music they haven't chosen before. They wanted to show versatility.
Tumblr media
Juulia and Matthias’ free dance this season has touched the hearts of countless skating fans, and they are grateful for the praise. "We went to Italy for Pascuale Camerlengo’s choreography. The week was very intense and fulfilling. This style of dance is very suitable for us. We worked a lot on designing new and unique lifts.”
In February, Juulia and Matthias stayed in the Olympic Village and experienced an unforgettable Olympic journey. “During the Olympics, we were given the opportunity to train with top athletes. We were able to observe their edges and strengths. The desire to win has always motivated us and we want to bring that spirit to our training."
Juulia and Matthias have many fond memories of the Beijing Olympics. Highlights include attending the opening ceremony with the entire Finnish team, watching the big air competition, and the end of their performances.
Tumblr media
Juulia learned figure skating after she was captivated by an ice show at the age of six. "I went to see a skating performance of Peter Pan and I saw Tinkerbell in the show! I wanted to be like her, so I asked my parents to send me to skating school. I started training seriously around the age of fifteen. That’s when I got an offer from the national team and I realized that I could be a good skater.”
Before becoming an athlete, Juulia also danced ballet professionally. At the age of 13, she faced her first tough decision in life. "I couldn't skate and dance at the same time. I was studying ballet at the Finnish National Opera, and I was missing a lot of performances and rehearsals so I had to make a choice. I enjoyed ballet a lot, but the feeling I get when skating in competition is something that ballet couldn’t give me.” Despite choosing to be a skater, Juulia believes that her ballet experience helps a lot in skating. “The basic skills in ballet gave me a good sense of lines and limb extension. All those rigorous hours of ballet training taught me grace, which I carry to the ice.”
Tumblr media
Compared to Juulia, Matthias started skating relatively late. "I started skating around the age of eight. There are many outdoor ice rinks in Finland and when I was a kid, I really liked open ice skating. After some time, my mother couldn’t stand being in the cold for extended periods anymore, so she decided to send me to skating school. I started training seriously around the age of 13."
Juulia and Matthias have faced difficult obstacles on the road to figure skating, from single skaters with big dreams to determined ice dancers. Both said they have never regretted the switch.
Tumblr media
The process of switching disciplines was not all sunshines and rainbows. At first, Juulia was uncomfortable skating closely with someone at high speed. Matthias shared that it felt like he suddenly lost the ability to skate. Ice dance pace and rules are something they had to learn, and Juulia admits that they are still adapting until now but they’ve clearly come a long way.
After several years of skating hand in hand, Juulia and Matthias have reached a deep mutual understanding, and they are very grateful for each other's support. Matthias said: "Having a partner to train and compete with means you share a lot of experiences and emotions, good and bad, but no matter what, you know that there is someone who is going through it with you and fully understands how you feel. Juulia is a very peaceful person and is very easy to get along with. The communication between us is absolutely smooth." Juulia said: “In our ice dance journey, we have created precious moments that belong to us. Matthias is always willing to learn and improve. He is really determined, ambitious, and always strives to be the best. I appreciate these qualities of him very much.”
Tumblr media
Juulia and Matthias respect and appreciate figures who have inspired them, both as single skaters and as ice dancers. As a child, Juulia looked up to Laura Lepistö, Kiira Korpi, Yuna Kim, and Mao Asada. When Matthias started ice dancing, he admired Scott Moir very much. As a single skater, he looked up to Daisuke Takahashi and Stephane Lambiel. Matthias says that it would be great to compete with Daisuke Takahashi, now that he is also an ice dancer.
Juulia and Matthias hope to make ice dance more popular in Finland through their continued success. "I wish more people would choose ice dance," Matthias said, while Juulia smiled and expressed a simpler wish: "We really need more boys in figure skating. I believe that more little boys will skate in the years to come, and I look forward to seeing more little ice dance teams appear in Finland."
Despite all the challenges along the way, Juulia and Matthias refused to give up. They persisted for 20 years on the winding journey to the Olympics. Despite the multiple ups and downs, they held on to their dreams. They share: “We just try to enjoy the process as much as possible, maintaining patience and letting nature take its course. Hard work is the key." With this belief, Juulia and Matthias hope to inspire people. They look forward to the next four years, as they perform more wonderful programs and bloom beautifully.

Edit: images in my fic are now fixed!! 😅
Fellow Yuri!!! On Ice fans, need something new to read?
For a long time, I’ve felt like there is an almost criminally small number of "future fic"/married Viktuuri stories in this fandom, so I set out to change this, and just posted the first 3 chapters of a new story, link here
This story will be updated every week, and features happily married Yuuri and Viktor in the lead-up to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, as well as during various points over the years, post-canon (and also switches point of view). Viktor is prepared to support his two skaters (Yuuri and Yurio) as they battle it out for gold, but the past has a way of making itself known, even when everyone is trying to keep their focus on the future. The events of the 2018 PyeongChang Games completely transformed the lives and career trajectories of many in the world of elite figure skating, and it’s with these impacts in mind that our beloved YOI characters are looking to make history (again).
In total, this work will be at least 20 chapters, and I’ve already written over half (ten chapters, plus various one-shots set in the same fic universe).
Below is an excerpt from Ch 1 to whet your appetite, happy reading!
“Let’s be honest, though, unlike certain other individuals who are much more practiced in calling me on my bullshit, I think Izumi’s hero worship allows her to let me off the hook far more than she should. All that ‘Viktor-sensei’ business, and whatnot.”
Yurio snorted. At Viktor’s raised eyebrows, he pinned him to the spot with a defiant stare.
“I wouldn’t worry about that too much, old man,” he said, scathingly. “All it took was one instance of you skating into the boards because you were too busy staring at Katsudon’s ass, and Izumi’s fangirling ended pretty damn quick.”
He felt Yuuri laugh into his shoulder and resisted the urge to pout.
“Though that happens rarely,” he replied, pointedly, raising his voice over Yurio’s rebuttal of “try twice a week, you pervert!”, “what I’m trying to get at is that you’ve deserved far better than I’ve given recently.”

BEIJING (AP) — China and Syria announced the formation of a strategic partnership on Friday as Chinese leader Xi Jinping kicked off a series of diplomatic meetings ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
Xi met Syrian President Bashar Assad in the southern Chinese city of Hangzhou, which is hosting the 15-day sports competition.
“In the face of the unstable and uncertain international situation, China is willing to work with Syria to firmly support each other ... and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice,” Xi said in a video clip posted online by state broadcaster CCTV.
Assad’s visit parallels in some ways that of Russian President Vladimir Putin last year for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Both leaders are virtual pariahs in the West but welcomed by China as it tries to expand its global influence and promote an alternative to the U.S.-led international order.
The Syrian leader will attend the Asian Games opening ceremony on Saturday night along with the king of Cambodia, the crown prince of Kuwait and the prime ministers of Nepal, East Timor and South Korea, China’s Foreign Ministry has said.
Xi also met Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah on Friday and said he would work with him to take bilateral relations to a new level, CCTV reported.
Both meetings took place at a state guest house at West Lake, a scenic tourist destination in Hangzhou that has inspired Chinese painters for centuries.
Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni arrived Friday at the airport in Hangzhou. CCTV video posted online showed him walking down the stairs from his plane to the tarmac for a red carpet welcome that included the Asian Games mascots.
Assad, who is making a rare trip abroad, is looking for ways to emerge from the international isolation brought on by a brutal war at home that shows no sign of ending after 12 years. He was expected to discuss economic assistance from China, which could play a major role in Syria’s future reconstruction.
Syrian state TV quoted Assad as thanking Xi and his government for standing on the side of the Syrian people “during the crisis and suffering.” China has backed Assad, using its veto on the U.N. Security Council eight times to block resolutions against his government.
Xi told Assad that China supports Syria in opposing external interference and unilateral bullying and promoting a political solution that is led and owned by Syrians, China’s CCTV said.
Assad expressed hope that the meeting would be the basis for “wide-ranging and long-term strategic cooperation in all fields” between China and Syria.
The Asian Games, which have more participants than the Olympics, also sparked a diplomatic row between India and China. Three Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as its territory, refused to accept their visas and stayed home after they were given visas stapled to their passports — different from those given to the rest of the team.
The Asian Games were scheduled for last year but postponed because of China’s then-strict pandemic restrictions. China eased its restrictions in December of last year.
