What does Ayurveda say about oral hygiene?
Tumblr media
White and strong teeth can brighten up your beautiful smile, so it’s very necessary to take the oral right care.
Our teeth carry out the most important task of breaking down the food and passing it on for further process. After chewing, little food particles, bacteria and other microorganisms get stuck on the teeth surface which further results in their decay. This is why you should consider teeth brushing as a vital activity in your daily routine - it will help keep your teeth strong and healthy.
For thousands of years, Ayurveda has been recommending brushing teeth daily. In ancient times, people used to use twigs as toothbrushes. Even in today’s world, people in many parts of India practice the Ayurvedic method of maintaining oral hygiene. It has been observed that the incidences of dental decays are lesser in them than in those who use regular pastes and brushes. This blog will explain how Ayurveda helps in taking complete care of your oral health.
Twigs:
Twigs are the thin branches of herbs that have special medicinal properties. During ancient times, instead of toothbrushes, people used to brush with twigs. There was no need for any toothpaste because the twig itself has medicinal qualities. The edge of the twig is to be chewed to form bristles. The bristles are sufficient to reach all corners of teeth and thoroughly clean them. The beneficial qualities of the herb can help prevent cavities and plaque forming.
The plants selected should have an astringent, pungent or bitter taste. Bitter-tasting herbs like Neem, and Asana have potent antimicrobial properties, which are very helpful for oral cavity hygiene. Bitter-tasting helps to improve taste and fight bad breath and anorexia. Pungent-tasting herbs help to improve salivation, thus helping to flush out toxins from the mouth. Astringent-tasting herbs such as Khedira can heal gum wounds and oral ulcers. They also help to fight bad breath.
The thickness of the twig that you are choosing for brushing should be approximately equal to the tip of one’s little finger. It must be 12 Angula length (approx 22.6 cm). The tip of the twig should be chewed a little to make it a brush.
Plants for dental care:
Ayurveda has mentioned some herbs that one should adopt in its routine for keeping teeth white and strong. Here’s a list of beneficial herbs that you should try:
- Nimba
- Karanja
- Khadira
- Arka
- Malati
- Arjuna
- Tejava – toothache tree
- Shisham
- Yashtimadhu( only the one which has a sweet taste)
Toothpaste:
The market is spoilt with choices of brands claiming to make herbal toothpaste but their authenticity is something to question about.
All these pastes produce froth in little or more quantities giving us a mental satisfaction that some rinsing is happening on the teeth. Of course, they help to get rid of the bad breath problem, at least temporarily, but the same can be achieved simply by chewing a clove or cardamom.
Tooth powders:
In my opinion, tooth powders (herbal or otherwise) are better than toothpaste. At least, they are solid enough to reach corners of teeth angles which brush with any number of grooves and sizes would fail to reach. Herbal powders like Tulsi powder or methi powder can be used.
Tongue scraping:
Tongue scrapers are a must for complete oral hygiene. The dirt deposited at the root of the tongue gives rise to a foul smell; so the tongue should be scraped regularly. You should choose a scraper which is not sharp-edged and is nicely curved. Tounge scrapers made from the metals like gold, silver, copper, tin and brass should be preferred.
Time of brushing:
In the morning, after analyzing for a while the condition of the body, the individual should pass urine and faeces, then clean his teeth with any herbal twig mentioned in Ayurveda.
The teeth should be brushed after every meal, and care should be taken not to hurt the gums.
Contra-indications:
People suffering from the following conditions are contra-indicated for brushing of teeth :
– indigestion
– vomiting
– dyspnoea
– cough
– fever
– facial paralysis
– excessive thirst
– ulceration of mouth – Brush may worsen the mouth ulcers due to friction
– heart disease
– diseases of the eyes –Brushing teeth can put pressure on the eyes
– diseases of the head
– diseases of the ears
Dashan Sanskar Churna:
Dashan Sanskar Churna is an Ayurvedic medicine in herbal powder form. It is used as toothpowder. It has many benefits including gum strengthening and improving shine and whiteness.
Uses – It is usually used to treat tooth and gum disorders. It helps to cure bleeding gums and teeth strengthening.
Dosage: 1 – 3 gm, used as tooth powder.
Ingredients:
10 gm fine powder of each of
– Shunti
– Haritaki
– Musta( Nut grass)
– Khadira
– Karpoora (Camphor)
– Pooga
– Maricha – Black pepper
– Clove
– Cinnamon
– Khatika Churna( Lime powder) - 90 gm
Care should be taken to use Ayurvedic powders of the right quality for the best results.
Side Effects: There are no side effects of this teeth powder.
Summing it up: Herbal remedies and twigs mentioned in Ayurveda are free from any harmful chemicals and can naturally enhance your teeth' health. They have been prevalent here for centuries and are still beneficial in the same way.
Take gentle yet effective care of your oral hygiene with Ayurveda.

Definition of Health in Ayurveda
In today's fast-paced world, the pursuit of health and wellness has become a primary concern for many. Amidst the plethora of wellness practices, Ayurveda stands out as a time-honored system deeply rooted in ancient Indian traditions. Originating over 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to health, emphasizing the balance between mind, body, and spirit. Let's delve into the profound wisdom of Ayurveda and explore its unique definition of health.
Tumblr media
Understanding Health in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, health is not merely the absence of disease but a dynamic state of equilibrium encompassing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Known as "Swasthya" in Sanskrit, it translates to being established in the Self. According to Ayurvedic principles, health is achieved when the body's three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are in harmony, along with proper digestion, elimination, and a well-functioning mind.

It emphasizes the importance of preventive measures and lifestyle practices to maintain this balance. Health is seen as a dynamic interplay of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual factors, where each aspect influences the others.
Ayurvedic Diet: Nourishing the Body and Mind
Central to Ayurveda is the concept of Ahara, or diet, which plays a vital role in maintaining health. Ayurvedic dietary guidelines emphasize the consumption of fresh, seasonal foods that are in harmony with one's constitution. By understanding one's unique doshic makeup, individuals can make informed choices to support their overall well-being. Ayurvedic dietetics not only nourish the body but also nurture the mind and spirit, fostering a deeper connection to nature and the self.

Ayurveda Yoga: Uniting Body, Mind, and Spirit
Yoga, an integral part of Ayurveda, offers a holistic approach to health by integrating physical postures, breathwork, and meditation. Ayurvedic Yoga practices are tailored to individual needs, taking into account one's doshic constitution and imbalances. Through mindful movement and breath awareness, Ayurveda Yoga helps to harmonize the doshas, release physical tension, and cultivate mental clarity. By uniting body, mind, and spirit, Ayurveda Yoga serves as a powerful tool for promoting holistic health and well-being.

Is Fasting Beneficial to Your Health? Types, Advantages, and Precautions
Tumblr media
It is often said that history will repeat itself, and we have witnessed this many times. Whether it's in fashion, lifestyle, or music, the best trends always come back. One of these tendencies is fasting. Outside of religious and political groups, people have begun to fast in order to improve their lives. Fasting on a regular basis has been linked to lower heart failure rates and improved metabolism. As a result, fasting could be the key to living a long and healthy life. This page will go over the various types, benefits, and cautions.
Introduction
A period of complete or partial abstinence from all or some foods is referred to as fasting. Fasting can be done for a variety of reasons, including weight loss and religious reasons. Due to its potential as a longevity treatment, fasting has been the subject of a variety of studies. People who fast on a regular basis have a nearly 45 percent lower mortality risk than those who do not fast during the follow-up period, according to several studies.
Upavasa (fasting) is one of Ayurveda's ten Langhana (body-lightening) treatments and one of the Daivavyapashraya (spiritual) therapies, according to Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, fasting increases digestive fire and stimulates Ama-dosha digestion (metabolic toxins). Upavasa is a religious technique for bringing oneself closer to the Almighty. According to research, fasting promotes autophagy. Aamashaya is the Ayurvedic term for the vitiated dosha in the human body, particularly the digestive viscera. This weakens and disables the digestive fire, resulting in stomach-related debilitation and the production of ama (metabolic poisons or factors produced as a result of the digestive fire's malfunction), which is thought to be the underlying cause of all diseases. This causes blockages in the body's pathways, which can lead to a variety of ailments.
Fasting can help you live a longer and healthier life by slowing down the ageing process, preventing diabetes, thyroid issues, hypertension, and heart disease, and increasing your chances of living a long and healthy life. It also aids in weight loss. A healthy body weight is inextricably linked to healthy joints and a positive body image.
Fasting has been claimed to have the following health benefits if done correctly:
The heart rate at rest is lower.
Blood pressure has dropped.
Insulin sensitivity improves.
Improvements in the pumping action of the heart
LDL (bad cholesterol) levels have decreased.
Improves Metabolism
Insulin levels are lower when fasting.
The sensitivity to insulin has improved.
Fasting for a short period of time can induce ketosis, which aids in weight loss.
Protects against inflammation
Ketosis during fasting causes several reactions, including decreased inflammation, improved blood sugar management, and a better response to physical stress.
The Various Types of Fasting
There are numerous ways to achieve IF, which is fantastic. If this is something that interests you, you can select the type that best meets your requirements, increasing your chances of success. Continue reading to find out about various types of intermittent fasting:
1. Fasting two days per week
The 5:2 diet requires people to eat normally for five days and then cut calories for the remaining two days. During the two fasting days, men typically consume 600 calories and women consume 500 calories.
2. Fasting on alternate days
The alternate-day fasting regimen entails fasting every other day and comes in a variety of forms. Some people practise alternate-day fasting by completely avoiding solid meals on fasting days, while others allow up to 500 calories. On feeding days, many people choose to eat as much as they want.
3. Maintain a 12-hour fast per day.
This is the most basic method, requiring you to fast for 12 hours every day. You also don't have to skip meals; all you're doing is skipping a night-time snack. This strategy, however, does not fully capitalise on the benefits of fasting.
4. Time-Limited Fasting
This fasting method requires you to select an eating window each day, ideally leaving you with a 14 to 16-hour fast. This could help with fat cell metabolism and insulin function.
5. Weekdays, 24 hours a day
During a weekly 24-hour fast, you only eat once a day. Some people choose to eat supper and then not eat again until the next day's dinner. This implies that you will fast for 24 hours. Fasting periods are nearly always 24 hours long (dinner to dinner or lunch to lunch)
6. Skipping Meals
This adaptable approach to intermittent fasting may be beneficial for beginners. It entails missing meals from time to time. People may skip meals based on their hunger levels or time constraints. Nonetheless, it is critical to consume nutritious meals at each meal.
What are the possible risks of fasting?
Though research has demonstrated the benefits of fasting in general, more evidence is required to support fasting as a weight-loss strategy. The first thing to remember is that fasting is not suitable for everyone.
Fasting may not be a good idea for people who have a history of eating disorders.
Diabetes patients who use medications and insulin may experience dangerously low blood sugar levels, which can be fatal.
Some people fast "dry," which means they don't drink water or eat solid foods during their fasting periods. This is a dangerous trend because it can result in dehydration, fatigue, electrolyte imbalance, heatstroke, and headaches.
Migraines have been linked to fasting.
Severe calorie restriction may result in dangerously low body weight.
Because the body has become accustomed to burning lipids rather than glucose, fasting-induced ketogenesis may have negative consequences. This is known as "keto flu."
Fasting without supervision may result in nutritional deficiencies. In the long run, this could have a negative impact on all physiological functions.
Conclusion
There are numerous ways to practice intermittent fasting, and no single method will work for everyone. Individuals will achieve the best results if they experiment with various styles to determine which one best fits their lifestyle and preferences. Fasting for extended periods of time when the body is not prepared, regardless of the form of intermittent fasting, may be harmful. These diets may not be suitable for everyone. If a person is prone to disordered eating, these strategies may exacerbate their negative relationship with food.
