We got to the School and the lights were all out, we ran through the halls heading for the boy’s locker room. We slid to a stop and Scott was sitting on a bench still in his towel. I could tell by the way he was slumped over that something was wrong, the air in the room was thick.
“Dude – We have a huge problem.” Stiles panted going into the room, Scott continues to stare at the floor.
“Trust me,” He started looking up meeting my eyes, “I know.”
“He was here,” I whispered picking up the scent in the air but there was another all too familiar one mixed with it. I raised an eyebrow in question looking at Scott, trying to not jump to conclusions. “Derek too?” Scott frowned nodding his head.
“He’s with him,” He muttered disappointedly
“What?” Stiles shouted in shock looking up at me and then back at Scott. I stepped forward going over to Scott kneeling down in front of him. He looked up at me but was unable to look me in the eyes.
“What did he say?” I asked just above a whisper, Scott sighed standing up going over to his locker
“He said he wants me to join his pack,” He said but I could tell that wasn’t all, I turned around so he could get dressed, “But he also said, he wants you as well to join his pack,” I sucked in a breath closing my eyes holding back tears that threatened to push through. I felt arms wrap around my body holding me close and I reached around holding Stiles to me just as tight.
“It’s going to be okay,” He whispered kissing the top of my head. I shook my head looking up at him with tear-stained eyes.
“No, it’s not,” I whispered, Scott appeared next to us and we headed out to the Jeep going back home.

I shot up from bed in a panic hearing something on the roof, I looked to the closed bathroom door as I heard Scott’s window slid open. I looked over at the clock that read 4AM in bright red numbers. I groaned throwing the comforter off in a huff a shiver running up my spine at the cold floor. I quietly opened the bathroom door and walked into Scott's room seeing him close his window.
“You know,” He jumped quickly looking at me with wide eyes
“You scared the shit out of me,” He breathed hand over his heart as he tried to calm down sitting on his bed. I waved him off leaning against the doorframe
“I covered for you with mom, you could have used the door for once. You know, like a normal human being,” I looked over at him and he shrugged
“What are you doing up?” He asked
“Trust me, I wouldn’t be if I could,” I glared over at him “Especially on a School Night,”
“Sorry,” he mumbled quietly before getting up and changing his clothes to pajamas. I frowned going over to his bed and sitting down on the end of it. He sat down next to me with a heavy sigh his hand running over his face trying to wipe the exhaustion clear on it.
“How was creepily watching Allison?” I asked with a small smile trying to lighten the mood. He smirked shaking his head before laying back.
“It's not creepy,” He muttered
I  pursed my lips and raised my hand pinching my fingers close together but not quite touching “It’s a little creepy,” I joked raising my voice just a pitch higher, he reached for his pillow tossing it at me, but I was quick to catch it tossing it back at him with a smile.
“Night Scott, or good morning, I guess,” He waved me off before turning his lamp off as I disappear into the joint bathroom and back to my very comfortable bed to sleep for just a few more hours at least.

The weekends quickly became my favorite time of the week just because it seemed to be some of the only somewhat quiet days without any crazy wolf disasters. At least, for the most part. The weekdays however felt like a whole other story but at least it was Friday, and the school day was just a normal day. Which I thanked god for because I had to catch up on so much work before I started to fall behind.
I sat in my room on the bed letting the afternoon autumn sun shine down on my back as I read. I had finished all my homework for the night, so the rest of the night was for self-care. Some very much needed self-care.
I heard someone pull into the driveway and I leaned up enough to look out the window to see Stiles Jeep. He looked up from the driver seat waving up at me and I waved back. He and Stiles got out and head into the house.
I closed my book reaching over to throw on my hoodie as I heard their feet hit the stairs. My door swung open and both Stiles and Scott walked in. I sat on my bed cross-legged smiling up as Stiles walked over giving me a quick peck on the lips before sitting down in front of me.
Scott closed the door behind him going over to my desk pulling out the chair before sitting backward on it resting his arms on the back of the chair. They both looked stressed and I raised my eyebrow at them both. I could tell they wanted to tell me something but were still deciding on if they should or not. I let out a small sigh dropping my head onto Stiles's shoulder.
“What did you do?” I asked looking back up at Scott, Stiles scoffed looking offended
“What makes you think we did anything?” He asked, I rolled my eyes with a small grin
“Because you two always seem to end up getting in trouble,”
“I mean, she’s not wrong,” Scott agreed, Stiles quickly turned his head to Scott with a look of betrayal
“I think we are getting off-topic here,” He said switching subjects, “We followed Jackson today,” I raised an eyebrow looking at the two in question
“I am aware of that, but have no idea why you two did this?” I asked curiously “Does it have to do with whatever happened in the locker room?” Scott slowly nodded his head; Scott did never say what exactly happened in the locker room saying I didn’t need to worry anymore about it and that it would be okay. I called instant bullshit on it but decide it would be best not to push it. Until now that is.
Stiles must have sensed the tension in the room with Scott and me as neither of us could break away from looking at the other. Stiles stood up from the bed leaning down cautiously giving a kiss to my head before standing back up
“I think you two have some things to talk about,” He said heading towards the door, I slowly nodded my head but not breaking eye contact with Scott. “I’ll text you later Kac,” He said before heading out the door. Once I heard the front door shut Scott took a deep breath.
“What the hell is going on?” I asked, he got up from my chair pushing it back to its place coming over and sitting down where Stiles was sitting.
“In the locker room, Derek and Peter showed up,”
“Yeah, I got that much,” I mumbled he looked at me with an annoyed expression
“Will you let me finish?” He asked, I sighed nodding my head motioning him to continue
“Peter wants revenge for the people responsible for murdering his family, Derek’s family,” I nodded softly understanding that much.
“So, Derek joined him?” I asked Scott, he nodded his head, “But who else is left? Hasn’t he done enough?” Scott let out a heavy sigh and I knew I was not going to like the answer
“I think Allison’s family was involved… they threatened Allison, kind of” I shot up breathing heavily as anger rushed through my veins
“They what?” I nearly yelled, Scott was quick to act so mom wouldn’t come barging in, that was the last thing we need. Scott quickly grabbed my shoulders giving them a squeeze telling me to calm down.
“Look, Peter wants us to join his pack because it would make him stronger, and he will hurt the people close to us to get that,” My mind flashed to Stiles's face and my eyes widened in panic.
“That’s why you have been watching her at night isn’t it?” I asked him, he nodded his head, He looked over at my alarm clock checking the time. “Somewhere to be?”
He nodded his head, “Yeah but look, don’t worry Kac. We’ll figure this out.” He pulled me into a hug before getting up and leaving out the door and then out the house towards the woods. I let out a heavy sigh sitting on my bed for a few minutes while I collected my thoughts.
I got up deciding a hot shower would help. A scolding hot shower. I grabbed my phone putting on some music before heading into the bathroom turning it on to get the water going switching the water to the shower from the tub. I paused before switching it back to the tub reaching under the sink for a bath bomb.
I smiled when I found one sitting on the counter. I went back into my room grabbing a couple of candles and my book. I was not going to let this new information ruin my self-care day. I would worry about what to do later. I mean, it is not like Stiles was completely helpless, who obviously knew more than Allison so that helped him, right? Derek would not go that far, a part of him like Stiles a little bit. A small part at least. But Peter, Peter would. He is shown he would that night in the school when he made me want to kill. Everyone.
A shudder ran down my spine that I quickly shook off turning off the water noticing it was high enough now. I dropped the bath bomb in getting undressed and getting into the hot water. I let out a relaxed sigh as I became fully submerged.
I went through a whole playlist before deciding the water was no longer warm enough to stay in. I got out wrapping a towel around my body. The sun was nearly set when I heard my phone go off. I clutched my towel closer going over to see who had texted. Stiles's name shined back.
Come over?
The text read; a small smile spread across my face. I heard Scott get back going into his room as I got read putting on some jeans and a simple t-shirt and sweatshirt. I walked out into the hall coming to a stop as Allison and me almost collided
“Allison?” I asked surprised to see her, she gave a shy smile back “He’s in his room,” I said before heading down the stairs, I heard my mom getting ready for something.
“Mom! I’m going to Stiles's house!” I shouted loud enough for her to hear but not waiting for a response back heading out the door. I quickly got on my bike making the short trip to Stiles house. I got there as Stiles was running out the door quickly grabbing me by my forearm pulling me towards the Jeep making me drop my bike on the lawn.
“Stiles? What the hell?” I asked shooting a glare at him. He opened the passenger side door rushing me to get in. Once I was in, he quickly shut the door rushing to the driver’s side getting in and starting the jeep backing out. “Stiles!” I yelled growing more irritated by his silence and abrupt behavior.
“Peter showed up at your house,” He finally spoke, and my eyes went wide as panic settled in, my heart beginning to race at the thought of something happening to my mom.
“What for?” I spoke quietly trying to keep my voice steady, he quickly turned onto another street and I kept my gaze ahead.
“He’s taking your mom on a date, except it’s not really a date he’s- “
“He’s going to bite my mom,” I interrupted, and he nodded pointing out the windshield. I looked out and there was a car parked and Stiles quickly turned slowing down a bit enough to make the car bounce slightly but not damage the jeep when it made impact with the car.
My mom got out of the passenger side door of the car we hit, making eye contact with my eyes and then looked over at Stiles who instantly put on a surprised face getting out of the car. I opted to stay in the car not wanting to face my mom’s wrath. Peter got out of the drivers meeting my gaze and I glared, and he returned it with a smirk before turning away.
Stiles settled things with the car incident and my mom ended up going back home. We headed back to his house and pulled into the drive putting the Jeep in park. I let out a breath of relief letting my head fall back against the headrest closing my eyes as the exhaustion of the events of tonight sunken. So much for my relaxing self-care night.
I felt a hand grip my shoulder and I turned my head looking over at Stiles.
“Why don’t you stay tonight?” He asked quietly, I looked at him confused
“What about your dad?” I asked looking at the quiet house
“He... he’s asleep,” He said, I raised my eyebrow in question but decided not to question it
“Come on, we’ll put your bike in the back of the Jeep,” I nodded opening the door, Stiles picked up my bike and putting it in the back before taking my hand and leading me inside. He led me up the stairs quietly and into his room shutting the door behind him.
I walked over to the bed sitting down as he went to his dresser pulling out a shirt and some shorts for me. He handed them to me, and I smiled lifting my hand and twirling my finger to have him turned around. He groaned but turned to face away. I quickly changed putting my jeans bra and shirt on the chair before tapping his shoulder to let him know I was done. I back up to the top of the bed getting under the covers as he stripped down to his boxers.
“Can you turn on the lamp?” He asked, I reached over hitting the switch and the overhead light to the room turned off and then he pulled the comfort back slipping in behind me reach over to turn the lamp back off. He kissed my shoulder then neck and then right behind my ear. He wrapped his arm around my waist pulling me closer to him.
“Goodnight,” He whispered snuggling into my hair. I smiled letting myself relax into his hold.
Goodnight Stiles,” I whispered back before drifting off to sleep.

The room was quiet, as it was only Casey and Bryce. Both of them are laying down on the hospital bed, which is too small for their liking. But, nothing ever stop them before. The way his arms were wrapped around her waist. Beneath the suit, as it gave her a sense of comfort and homey feeling inside of her. Somehow, being in his arms felt like being back at home, where she felt safe from the monsters and stories that can be seen on the other side of it all.
It was them against the world, time, and all the forces in between. The day went by as a traumatic experience for both of them, a day they never expected to see. It felt as if the universe is giving them a sign, somehow that life can be very short for both of them. Tomorrow will never be guaranteed, as long as we learn how to enjoy the present.
‘If it was my last night, do you have anything you want to tell me?’ Casey started, earning a look of sadness in his face. An expression that wasn’t well known to the scalpel jockey. It was new, every day she realizes, there was always something new about one Bryce Lahela. The tricks he had on his sleeve that manage to blow her mind, he never failed to be the reason she was smiling every day.
‘Casey…’ The softness in his voice made her heart soothe, as the longing to be with him after all this time.
‘Answer me, please…’ She took his hands in hers, as she lets out a squeeze. His eyes soften, a sad expression was plastered on his face followed by a long silence. Somehow, he was constructing an answer in his mind, and honestly. He can’t think of anything, not even an answer crosses his mind, until he suddenly blurts it out.
‘I love you.’
The words left his mouth, a spontaneous act that he never saw it coming. Bryce felt a pang of nervousness, as the 8 letters left his mouth in a sudden manner. Casey was speechless, as they never made it official, but… deep down, she knows every interaction they had, every kiss, hug, moments they had together was better than anything in this world. It felt like a rare presence that she never expected, but didn’t know she needed it.
Love. It is subjective, as everyone will fall in love, out of love, and maybe not at all. The feeling of comfort of love plays a huge role in everyone’s life. Some say it can be a motivator, and maybe a goal to foreseen at the end of the road; marriage. Or, maybe it's just the feeling of being free with that certain someone, who can lift your spirits up with a snap of a finger. But, being there with Bryce. It wasn’t any of those, it was the feeling of being where we were supposed to be.
She always counted on the odds, reeling on the what if’s as medicine was never about the odds. It was a balance of everything as their goal at the end was to find a cure, in order to make life happier at the end of the day. The love of it all made her realize that this field of career, was what she always wanted. And, everything in her life had to happen which leads her to this moment, where she almost died. Or, maybe she will.
‘What about you?’ He brings up a similar question, as the last three words from his mouth are playing like a broken record in her mind.
‘Me?”
He nods slowly, as he was somewhat curious as they were wrapped around each other’s arms with their own companion, the dark night sky as the time was somehow counting down slowly, as maybe it was her final time being in his arms.
‘I am happy to spend the last night of my entire life with you.’ The words felt like vomit coming from her mouth, a truth that she didn’t know she needed.
‘…It’s not your last night Casey, you’ll be here tomorrow. Waking up happily here, as we presume our life forward with each other.’ Bryce’s voice started to broke slowly, an act that she didn’t see coming.
‘Bryce…’ She gazes into his eyes, somewhat it looked different than the ones she used to see at their early walks to the hospital, or when he scores a surgery. It looked somber, somehow the hopefulness in his eyes was absent leaving a sense of fear and dread that was clouding it all.
He strokes her cheeks, somehow examining it after all this time. The way he looked at you, with a sense of fear in him, as your tragedy cast a storm above his head. Despite being in the hazmat suit, it didn’t stop him from leaving warmth on your cold fingers, stroking it slowly and gently with the similar feeling that he always leave you. A breeze of intensity, and the calmness of the ocean.
In a matter of seconds, the tears in your eyes fall. A sudden reaction that is never expected, it felt like a chemical reaction at that moment as the moments in the past circulates with her.
‘It will never be the last night, this is… you are gonna be alright. You will be alright.’ He strokes her hair, as he somehow is memorizing the felt of her smooth hair, it was a little habit of his. It was a sudden reaction, a way of affection.
‘...how do you know that? I don’t feel like it, it felt like the end; I didn’t get to do anything as this is the final place I am gonna be before I died.’ Casey keeps on talking, as Bryce couldn’t hold it in anymore.
‘No, you are not dying tonight or any night. This world is not ready to say goodbye to you, hell… I don’t think I will ever see the world without you in it. You are staying here, and I-..’ He stops himself, taking a deep breath as she sat on the hospital bed. A discourage look on her face says it all, somehow he has a way of looking past her façade, and the way her eyes cast the sense of worry, he knew something was wrong. He stood up from the bed, making his way around towards her.
He is standing in front of her, as Casey’s head is down. He took her hands in his, and squeeze it lightly capturing her attention once more.
It was silence in the room, the sounds of machines were slowly heard in the background as she started to humming. She loved to sing, but it was always just a hobby; since she had become one of the usual for karaoke night at Donahue’s with Bryce which is one of her favorite memories with him.
So, before you go,
Her voice bounces through the walls, as the sealed room made it much louder. The tears started to fall in between, as the news of Danny and Bobby made her heart cry in despair. They don’t deserve this, they don’t deserve to be the one who had to say goodbye.
Was there something I could've said to make your heartbeat better?
Her eyes gaze into his, a strong inferior behind those emeralds, as an attempt to kept herself together.
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
She knew she could do better, she knew she can stop them all by pushing them all away. Giving her a chance to do something once, as Rafael’s state floats in her mind, torturing her. Seeing him that way, as the storm hits her once more, where she stood there hoping that it was going to be her.
Her voice was cut off with a sob, as Bryce leans forward. Their foreheads meet through the glass of the hazmat suit, she wanted to give up. He doesn’t want to let her go, as time is the only essence they had left.
The silence of the night, made his heart leap in nervousness, her heartbeat was still there as she finally falls herself into a deep slumber. The quiet killed him, as he doesn’t want to close his eyes. The fear of her being taken away from him very soon made him wept in silence. She looked peaceful, as the day finally gets slower, where it felt like time was never moving at all. Right now, there was nothing he could do. A soft hummed was heard during the early hours of the day, as it was almost time.
---------------------------
‘I will always, honestly, truly, completely love you.’ Was one of her favorite quotes from a movie called; Love, Rosie. She told him about her love for it, as they were having a sleepover of their own, a classic tale of second chances and fate.
Fate was sensitive subject, as he always lived his life in a flow. A path that leads him to the unknown, but when it comes to Casey. Someone who waltzed into his life, as a colleague turns to be more, the flow seems to be a back-up plan instead. Seeing herself in that position, made him wonder if fate would ever turn around for her, or for them.
The lights brought him back to life, as the diagnostics team along with the doctors from Mass Kenmore made their way into the room. A pleasant look on their faces gave him a beacon of hope, a small chance for her to fight.
Ethan walks toward him, a small nod was given in his way. Bryce glances at Casey’s figure who looks peacefully asleep, as a brink of tears falls once more. She is going to make it.
‘We will save her Bryce.’ His voice is slow, not wanting to wake her up. Bryce nods with a head full of thoughts and happiness, that he suddenly pulled Dr. Ramsey into an engulfed hug. A sense of adrenaline was splashed out, as he felt himself smiling all the way through it all.
‘Thank you.’
Ethan just nods, a small smile was hinted on his face. Knowing that he would lose a friend as well, during it all. Both of them stayed that way before it was time to test it out. The moment where all of their lives gonna change once again.
------------------------------
The smile on her face, as the doors were opened to them. The gratefulness on her face, as she ran into his arms. His arms securely around her waist, as she survived. She did it.
She survived, and she is not going to wait anymore.
‘I love you too.’
THE END.
A/N: Heyyy, so I hope all of you enjoyed it! I am very terrified but, hey... i am very proud of it aswell! Thank you so much for reading, and I will see ya soon!! <3

Tracing The Stars Chapter 10
Blairs POV
Harry played a great game.
He only played in the first half but ended up scoring two goals, and we ended up winning four to one.
I was originally going to sit by myself when I got here, but Maya saw me and demanded I sit next to her.
I didn't know her very well. I just knew that she was Harry's friend. I know they have been rumored to mess around, and I definitely believe it. She was beautiful, but there was no need for me to be jealous. I was not dating Harry, he was my friend, and that was it. Harry's past or present sex life is also none of my business.
Maya was also extremely nice. All I knew about her was that her parents ran some big-time magazine in the city. We talked the entire game about the school musical, soccer, and she even asked me a couple of questions about my job at Joe's cafe.
Once the game was over, I noticed Harry and Gabe talking to a scout. We briefly make eye contact, and he mouths a "Wait for me," and I nod my head in response.
I was getting a few stares now that the game was over, and people started to realize I was wearing Harry's jacket, but I didn't have time to overthink the situation because Harry finally came up to me with his brown curls pushed back with a headband.
"Harry, you played so well!" I say, wrapping my arms around his shoulders going in for a hug.
His arms settle around my hips. "That was the best I've played so far. Looks like you are my good luck charm peach."
"Hey, you are coming with us to Joes', right?" Gabe says, walking over to where Harry and I are standing.
"Yeah, I'll drive with Blair," Harry responds. "I think the rest of the team can split up in cars."
Gabe smirks at us. "Yeah, yeah, alright, we will give you two your privacy."
+++
By the time Hary packed his stuff up, and we drove a short five minutes to Joe's, a lot of people from the game were already there. Harry leads me to sit in the booth next to him.
At the table was Don, Tristan, Levi, and Jacob. They were all seniors on the soccer team, and I know they usually come to Joe's after soccer games because I have served them all a couple of times. Maya sat next to Gabe, and a girl named Aaliyah, who I recognized from the cheer team, sat next to Tristan, who I believed was her boyfriend.
The rest of the girls cheer team sat at a table directly adjacent from us. I can't believe that used to be me last year. Between school musicals, the cheer team, my job at Joe's, Justin, and trying to keep up with parties and appearances at school, I was so stressed out. I don't even miss cheer that much, to be honest. It is such a popularity contest, and it was so draining.
I jumped at the feeling of Harry's arm snaking around my waist, bringing me slightly closer to his side. I was caught off guard at first, but the way butterflies spew off in my stomach and my cheeks going red and slightly tingled reminded me of when I first started dating Justin.
That was the first tell-tale sign of having a crush.
I embraced the feeling of Harry's arm around me, placing the side of my head in the crook of his neck.
Maya winks at me from across the table, and I send her back a smile and breathe out a weak laugh.
"How is your leg Harry?" Don asks.
Harry's fingers dance around the side of my hip. "It's good. No pain or anything for now, and I hope it stays that way for the season."
"Blair," Tristan spoke. "Yo, Long time no fucking see. Where the hell have you been!"
I laugh at his greeting. "Around I guess."
"Blair, remember those shrooms we did with Harry and Jacob sophomore year at Gabe's Party?" Tristian brings up.
"Yep. I'm pretty sure Harry fell into the pool that night," I giggle, looking up at Harry.
He groans. "Okay, I was high out of my fucking mind. Can we not bring that up."
"You single?"Jacob asked.  "You still with that Justin kid?"
I shake my head. "Nope, we broke up at the end of junior year, been single all summer."
Levi rolls his eyes jokingly. "Uhhh, who's gonna tell him," he says, pointing a finger at Harry. "If you are single, you might want to tell this guy. I think Styles believes he is your boyfriend the way he is all over you."
Harry becomes flustered, and his face falls red from embarrassment. "Alright, all of you shut up about me."
The conversation continues, and it feels like I have been with these guys forever. We reminisced about our old party days. Jacob brought up the time I got so drunk and threw up on his dad's boat, which I don't remember probably because of how wasted I was.
Gabe also asked me why I quit the cheer team. I just gave him the short answer and told him all my extracurricular activities were piling up.
At one point, the conversation ended up on my Dad, and who he says the worst player is. No one would believe me when I told them I didn't know, even though I knew it was Harry.  Levi swears it's some freshman named Dylan who made varsity soccer on a fluke, but I didn't even know who that was.
Our waitress finally came up to us. I recognized her as Candice. She got hired about a week ago, and I already liked her. We both complained about our overly affectionate boss on our breaks.
She waved at me before introducing herself to the table.
While Candice went around taking orders, Harry whispered in my ear, "How do those burgers sound."
I smile up at him. "Fuck yes."
Maya, Harry, and I ended up in deep conversation about our science teacher, Mr.Gunnerson, an old crazy nerd. While I was too lost in conversation with Maya, Harry's arm moves from my waist to my thigh, rubbing the exposed skin that my jean shorts did not cover.
A whirlwind of emotions hit me when I first felt Harry's touch on my thigh. I tensed up at first, not really sure what he was planning to do. When his hand just settled on my thigh, rubbing up and down, I was able to settle my emotions. I liked having Harry's hands on my body. It was a constant reminder that he was right beside me. Harry and I were sitting extremely close to one another, our sides practically overlapping. I really loved the attention he was giving me, and I wish I could just whisk him away and throw myself at him.
Was I ready to throw myself at him?
Absolutely not.
But my hormones were getting the best of me, and what was once innocent butterflies in my stomach was now a raging fire in the pit of my stomach, damp panties, a flushed face, and short isolated breaths.
The boy wasn't even touching me in a heavy sexual manner, but I was already all hot and bothered for him.
After I finished my food, I quickly excused myself to the bathroom needing a second before I jumped Harry's bones in front of everyone at the table.
When I got to the bathroom, I splashed a bit of cold water on my face hoping to cool down a bit.
"B!" A voice yells.
I turn around from the sink to see two cheerleaders whose names I can't really remember and Megan standing directly behind them.
"So I see you are wearing Harry's letterman?" The brown-haired one, whose name I think is Kacey.
My eyes dart downwards, a nervous habit, before answering her question.
"Harry just gave it to me because I was cold."
"So, how was the sex?" She curiously asks me. "I tried to fuck him this summer, but he was with some other girl at the time."
My jaw sets, and I can't help but feel a sting of jealousy.
"I didn't have sex with him. Harry is my friend."
"Please, we saw him all over you at dinner tonight." Kacey presses.
Megan places her hand on Kacy's shoulder and reprimands her in a whispering tone. "Can we just leave, please?"
Kacy scoffs. "Hell no! We all know you were Justin's whore anyways. What are you doing Blair hmmm? Trying to fuck every soccer player in the county?"
I was tired of being walked all over.
Fuck this.
I took a few steps up to Kacey, so I was a couple of inches away from my face. "First of all, I didn't fuck Harry, and even if I did, it would be none of your fucking business. Secondly, I'm no one's whore. Even if I did fuck every guy in this county, it would be none of your damn business Kacey!"
Once I finished my rant, I was about to storm out the bathroom when Kacey spoke up again.
"My name is Kelly."
"Oh wow. I don't care." I spit back, slamming the door.
High school is the most dramatic fucking place ever.
What was the point of that? My sex like, which is non-existent, is no one's business. I wasn't even surprised when Megan didn't stand up for me. She has always cared way too much about popularity and appearances.
I know Kelly is only lashing out because I have been hanging out with Harry, and she is jealous, but I'm just tired of being caught up in drama when it's the one thing I have done my best to avoid. I wish high school could be a place where everyone would mind their damn business, but this is Eastwood Highschool, and everyone here feeds off of drama, drugs, and partying.
I stormed out of the bathroom, and Harry was about to say something, but when his eyes set on me, he acknowledged the annoyed expression on my face.
"Peaches, you good?"
I grab my bag from the booth, searching for my card to pay the bill. I just want to leave Joe's as fast as possible.
"I'm fine. Where is the check?"
Harry sends me a look. "I paid it. Are you sure you are okay?"
I tilt my head looking up at him with a frown. "You didn't have to do that, Harry. We could have at least split it."
"It's not a big deal," he reassures me. "Let's get out of here."
Everyone walks outside to their cars, and I frequently forget how rich the kids who go to Eastwood are. Gabe and Maya have walked into some fancy BMW, and Levi speeds off in a Mercedes.
I don't even have a car yet. Sometimes I drive my mom's Toyota Camry on the weekends when she doesn't have work, but I have been saving up for a car, and hopefully, by the end of the year, I could afford my own.
Harry and I got in his car, and he placed his hand instantly on my thigh, backing out of his parking spot.
Before we could pull out of the lot, Maya, who is in the passenger seat of the Gabes car, rolls down her window and calls out, "If you two are going to have sex, send us an invite!"
The palm of my hand slaps my mouth in shock at Maya's bluntness.
Harry speeds off before Maya could let anything more vulgar come out of my mouth.
"You okay, Blair? You seemed a little distressed coming out of the bathroom." Harry asked, still focused on the road.
I sigh."Yeah, I had a bit of a run-in with some girls from the cheer team. They called me Justins whore, and they thought I was fucking you."
Harry frowns and looks annoyed by my words. "I'm sorry. I knew that you wearing my jacket would bring some attention to you, but I didn't think anyone would have the balls to say it to my face. Also, I'm sorry what they said to you about Justin."
"It's okay. I'm used to the rumors. Everyone thought I was fucking him even though I wasn't."
He snaps his head towards me with a raised eyebrow. "What?"
I laugh. "Yeah, literally all rumors. He tried fingering me a couple times, but it never felt good, and I never came, hence why I thought my clit was broken. A few heated make-out sessions and I gave him a handjob once in his car, but that was it."
Harry snorts. "During our all star-game, he literally told us he fucked you. What a fucking asshole."
"Yeah, he really was," I mumble out.
Harry notices my change in tone because once he pulls up into my driveway, he puts the car in park and turns towards me.
"Are you a virgin, Blair?"
Did he not like the fact I was a virgin? I know Harry was a super experienced guy when it came to sex, and maybe he wasn't into virgins.
"It's not a bad thing." He quickly reassures me.
"Yes, I have never had sex before. I usually don't do what we did the other night at Gabe's party," I trail off with my voice. "But I really liked it."
My confession makes my heart thunder, and my throat goes dry. I never got to tell him how much I enjoyed that night. When it came to Harry, I had this internal war with my brain telling me to leave him alone but my hormones telling me to let myself go.
Harry brings his other hand to my thigh, rubbing up and down and looking me in the eyes.
"Well, there is more of that where it came from Peaches. If you want it."
We stare into each other's eyes for the briefest of seconds. The tension between us was suffocating, and I wanted him to make a move so badly.
"Harry," I softly whisper.
"Fuck it." He whispered, searching for approval.
I slowly nodded my head, and that was all he needed for him to attach his lips to mine.

*****
I choose Lady Riley. I’ve always known that my choice was her - ever since she unexpectedly showed up at the masquerade ball. That night we met in New York, there was an immediate attraction towards her- she isn’t noble but she was free spirited. She was different- in a positive way. She’s beautiful, I have never believed in love at first sight until that night of my bachelor party.
I choose Lady Riley.
Spending time with her alone- proved difficult during my social season. But I was determined to prove how much she meant to me, whilst also playing fair with the other suitors. Luckily she was understanding about this. Or so I assume. Every time she smiled, my heart filled with joy. I just wanted to claim her as mine there and then.
I choose Lady Riley.
Riley, the girl who wasn’t bothered about; Olivia’s abrupt attitude, Madeleines snarky and bitchy comments, Kiara talking in French all the time, Penelope unable to prevent herself from talking about poodles constantly. This woman. I want her, no I need her to be my Queen. She’s told me herself she loves me. What’s stopping us?
“I choose.... Lady Madeleine.”
Those words still haunt me, seeing the love of my life dragged out of the Coronation ball due to something that wasn’t her fault. Have I lost her good? Quite possibly. Why did I listen to my father and Regina? Why didn’t I follow my heart?
Now she is back, or so I’ve heard. I am grateful for the Beaumont’s persuading for her to return. Even with the fake scandal hovering over her. Will she give me the time of day? Allow myself to explain my reasoning for everything. I know Riley, she is strong. Stronger than anyone I’ve ever met.
My thoughts seem to drift towards Drake Walker. My best friend. Thinking back to my social season, a smile always seemed to creep up onto his face every time he was with her. I noticed them sneaking off together every so often. They didn’t realise that I was watching them- but I was, and will continue to. Why am I jealous? I shouldn’t be. But I can’t help it. I’m engaged to Countess Madeleine, the most ludicrous decision that I have ever made in my lifetime. Riley is close to all the friends that she has made here, Drake was horrendous to her at the beginning. I have an inkling that Drake may have strong feelings for with his reactions after the disastrous ball. Brooks. Why does he call her that? Have I lost her to my best friend? Is the surname nickname a little morse code for his feelings towards her? I need to end this engagement promptly and win my love back.
*****
I wouldn’t blame you if you’re furious with me, but please meet me so I can at least explain. I’ll be on the balcony outside my room in twenty minutes.
I know that she will receive this letter. I know that she will most likely read it. How she will react is unknown. When I first saw her, she was very abrupt - explaining how she hasn’t forgiven me. Not that I was presumptuous as to think that she would. I grit my teeth as Madeleine placed her hand on my arm as I needed to tell Riley that we should talk. Then Madeleine had the nerve to kiss me. I watched as Riley’s lip trembled, she must have known what I needed to tell her- Maxwell looped his arm through hers and tore her away, out of my view. Maybe he could have foreseen her becoming upset. After all, out of everybody he has spent the most time with her. Civilly she explained that it was nice seeing both myself and the countess.
Deep down in my heart I hope that she will somehow sneak away and meet me. I begin pacing the floor of the balcony- wondering whether or not if I’m wasting my time. Would I blame her if she didn’t show up? Of course I wouldn’t. After a while, I decide to lean over the balcony- staring off into the distance.
“Made it!” Hearing a mumbled voice due to wind, I didn’t look from where it came from. My heart filled with joy. Assuming she had slightly forgiven me. Baby steps.
“Riley?”
“Do I really sound like little blossom? I think after that jump- you can call me spidey!” Turning around, I tried to hide the disappointment of one of my closest friends being here instead.
“Sorry, Max. I assume that she is avoiding me?”
“Yeah. Sort of. Listen, Li. She’s heartbroken. She misses you like crazy. She just doesn’t understand why everything happened the way it did. Tonight was her first night back- in time, maybe she will talk with you?”
“Where is she? I need to see her. I know I’m risking her safety- if I’m with you hopefully no one will question it. I need her Max, without her my life is dull....”
“Erm.... As she quoted “I need to see someone else who I trust. I know neither you nor this person would break my heart. I need to see Drake before talking to Liam’..” Maxwell looked at me with sorrow in his eyes as he bit his lip when reiterating what she said. I swallowed hard, before fixing my stoic expression.
“Of course, she would want to see him. If Lady Hana was here I’d assume she would want to see her too. But Drake isn’t here...”
“We went for some fresh air. For some reason he was in the courtyard- she ran up to him. He explained that he wasn’t going to come until tomorrow. That’s when I came here, as I left I did hear him explain that you take her safety very seriously as we all do.”
What are they doing now? Is he sweeping her into his arms? I wish she was in my arms. Why him? Why my best friend, who hates her? Does he actually hate her? She trusted me, but I’ve lost that now. I’ve broken her. How will I ever get her to regain my trust?
“Li? Are you okay?”
“Yes. Of course I am, Lord Maxwell. I just really miss her. I love her. So much, it fucking hurts.”
“Tomorrow will be a better day my friend... I’ll talk to her.” I hope so. I really hope so, is it too late to abdicate? Is it too late to marry for love? I laughed to myself inside knowing that this wasn’t an option. Not to someone like myself anyway.
****
Maxwell could see how heartbroken Liam was. Thinking back to their time growing up together, he had never seen him this emotional before. The only possible time was when his mother had lost her life, far too soon. Before heading to his room, he decided to check in on Riley- just to make sure that she was handling things better than she was during her few weeks in Ramsford. As he was about to knock on the door- he heard Drakes voice.
Brooks you know how I feel about you.
Slowly opening the door, he witnessed Riley hug Drake tightly. Retrieving his phone, he ran to his room. Pick up, Li. Pick up. Please. No answer. Great!
Removing the stray twigs out of his hair, he decided to focus his mind on gaining some sleep after he had sent a text.
Li, we need to talk. You need to end this engagement pronto! Don’t ask any questions- please just do it ASAP! Maxi

Drake lent against the bar, clutching a tumbler of whiskey as he surveyed the ballroom. It was Dakota’s 16th birthday and the ballroom had been decorated with banners, balloons and streamers hanging from the wall and ceiling. Various pictures of Dakota as a child also hung from the walls around the room. A small smile crept on his face as he watched his daughter dancing and laughing with her friends. Drake had always teased Willow about Dakota looking exactly like a Walker, but as she threw her head back in laughter, hand clasped over her mouth, she looked exactly like her mother. Drake was proud of the person she was becoming. She’d always marched to the beat of her own drum and never cared what other people thought. She was outgoing, mischievous and as Drake would always say ‘had a smart ass mouth’. As Drake glanced around the room one of the pictures caught his eye. It was of Dakota after winning her dance competition, Max and Willow had lifted her onto their shoulders, Cole stood in front pulling a funny face as Drake stood next to Willow beaming up at Dakota who was grinning back at him. As he stood looking at the photo memories of the day flooded his mind.
******
Drake let out a sigh as he pulled up to his cabin. He turned off the ignition and loosened his tie. Instead of working in the stables, Liam had asked him to sit in on some important meetings with him. Drake didn’t mind, but it was certainly more stressful and boring than what he was used to. He got out of his truck and made his way to the front door, he paused when he heard the faint sound of music coming from the back of the house. Curiosity getting the better of him he followed the sound. He found Dakota lying on the floor, arm resting over her face.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” Drake said as he made his way over. He sat down beside her “You have your dance competition tomorrow”
Dakota sighed as she sat up “I think I’m going to pull out of it”
Drake frowned as he looked at his daughter “Why? You’ve been training months for this”
She dropped her head back to look at the sky “Because I can’t do the stupid handstand flip” she mumbled.
Drake cocked a brow as he turned his head to face her “I’ve seen you do it a hundred times Koda”
She let out a frustrated sigh “I can’t land on my feet”
Drake stood, brushing the dirt off his trousers and held out his hand “Come on, get up, try again”
Dakota shook her head “No dad”
“I know how much this means to you Koda”
She rolled her eyes as she grabbed Drake’s hand, as he pulled her to her feet.
“Okay start off slow and we’ll go from there” Drake said as he crossed his arms over his chest. Dakota took a few steps back, Drake watched as she flipped with ease and landed on her feet. Drake nodded “Again” Dakota performed the flip a few more times perfectly.
“Okay now try it with a run up” Drake could see the hesitation in her eyes as she stood with her hands on her hips “Tell me where to stand and I’ll catch you if I think you’re going to fall” Dakota nodded and grabbed his hand pulling him a few feet forward. Dakota took a few paces back, she let out a breath and shook her arms out before she began. Drake watched her run towards him, he saw her hesitate just before she planted her hands on the ground and caught her before she could tumble to the floor “You hesitated Dakota”
“I know, that’s what Uncle Max keeps saying”
“You have nothing to worry about” Drake crouched down to catch her gaze “I know you can do it, come on try again”
After a few tumbles and more practice, Drake could see Dakota’s confidence growing. As Dakota ran towards him, he took a step back and smirked when she performed the flip perfectly, landing on her feet. Dakota grinned as she turned to face him “I did it!”
“What did I tell you? Your dad knows best”
Dakota ran towards him and wrapped her arms around him “Thank you Dad”
“I’m always here to help you Koda” Drake planted a kiss on the top of her head “Now come on let’s get you to bed, you have a competition to win tomorrow”
******
Drake was pulled from his memory as he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist. He turned, pulling Willow into his side as he draped his arm over her shoulder and placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
“Hey you”
Willow nuzzled into his chest “Our little girl is sixteen Drake”
Drake sighed as he rested his head on top of hers “I know”
“She’ll be going off to college soon”
“Yeah” Drake sighed “At least it’ll be a lot quieter around the house”
Willow smacked his arm playfully “Drake!” She scolded.
“I'm joking” He grinned “Cole will be happy, he won’t have Koda winding him up every chance she gets”
“He’ll miss her though, he can’t perform his protective brotherly duties when she’s not here” Willow giggled and nodded to the opposite end of the ballroom “Have you seen him”
Drake followed her gaze. Cole was leaning up the wall, arms crossed over his chest scowling. His eyes never left Callen Nevrakis, who had one arm wrapped around Dakota’s waist as he lent down whispering in her ear. Drake smiled proudly “That’s because I taught him well”
“He’s literally a mini you” she giggled “I can’t believe he’s 13 next year, I can still remember when he was born”
******
“Daddy!” Dakota shrieked as she bounced down the steps of the Ramsford estate, Max trailing behind. Drake bent down, arms outstretched, as Dakota wrapped her arms around his neck. Drake kissed her cheek as she rested her head on his chest “Was you good for Uncle Max?”
Max grinned as he approached “We had fun, didn’t we Koda bear?”
Dakota nodded as she toyed with the buttons on Drake's shirt “We ate ice cream and watched movies and we built a pillow fort!” She beamed.
Drake chuckled as he opened the door of his truck “I’m glad you had fun” he strapped Dakota into her car seat and turned to Max “Thank you for looking after her”
Max waved him off before pulling him into a hug “Anytime and congratulations”
Drake grinned as he pulled away “Thank you”
After taking the short drive back to the cabin, Drake got Dakota out the car and carried her to the front door “You ready to meet your little brother?” Dakota nodded excitedly as he opened the front door. Willow was sitting on the couch, cradling Cole in her arms. Drake placed Dakota on the floor and she ran towards Willow. She smiled as her daughter kissed her cheek “Hey baby”
Dakota peered down at Cole and smiled, she stroked his cheek with her finger “He looks like daddy” Willow and Drake grinned at each other
“I know”
Dakota places her finger in his tiny hand “Can I hold him?”
Willow nodded as she patted the space beside her “Of course”
Drake placed a pillow on her lap and under her arm. Willow gently placed Cole in her arms, making sure to support his head. Drake watched and could feel his heart swell as Willow and Dakota cooed over Cole.
******
“Drake I think we might have a problem” they watched as Their son pushed himself from the wall, making a beeline straight for Dakota and Callen. Just as Drake was going to make his way over, Max grabbed Cole by the arm and stopped him. After a few minutes Cole retreated back to the edge of the dance floor, Max turned and bounced his way over to Dakota. Max bowed dramatically while holding his hand out, Dakota grinned as she took it and they both began to twirl across the floor. Even though sometimes it seemed like Maxwell’s life purpose was to annoy the living hell out of Drake, he couldn’t fault him when it came to his family. Maxwell has been there for them through every up and down they faced so far and sometimes had been the glue that held them all together. He’d always treated Dakota and Cole as if they were his own and Max and Dakota were practically joined at the hip. Drake knew Max would always make them a top priority and the unconditionally love he had for his kids.
******
3 more days Drake thought to himself as he slowly made his way to the front door. Willow was on a business trip in France and Drake was finding it difficult being away from her. He loved spending quality time with Dakota when he finished work and having her all to himself, but without Willow it felt like something was missing, it didn’t feel right. He was grateful Max had offered to spend the week and help look after Dakota, it helped take both of their minds off Willow being away. Drake pushed open the front door and was surprised to find it empty. The past few days he’d walked in and Max and Dakota would be dancing and singing around the living, watching a film or sitting at the coffee table drawing. He kicked off his shoes and padded into the kitchen to find it was also empty, he frowned before calling out “Max? Koda?”
With no reply Drake strode up the stairs and headed straight to Dakota’s room, he peeked his head around the door but nothing. Panic started to set in until he glanced down the hallway and saw the door to his and Willows bedroom slightly open. He padded his way down the hall and slowly opened the door. He grinned when he saw Dakota curled up on Max’s chest both of them asleep. He quietly creeped across the room towards the bed, he brushed the hair out of Dakota’s face and bent down to gently kiss her forehead. He smiled as her tiny hand gripped onto Maxwell’s shirt as she nuzzled into him. Drake knew how much she loved her Uncle Max and he also knew that Max would do anything to make Dakota happy and protect her. He was grateful that, besides him and Willow, Dakota would always have Max in her corner to help her through everything she would face through life. He pulled out his phone, snapped a picture and quickly sent it to Willow before creeping out the room and closing the door quietly behind him.
******
Drake caught Dakota’s eye across the ballroom, he titled his head towards the doors of the balcony, she beamed and nodded before excusing herself. She made her way across the room and quickly snuck outside. She made her way over to Drake, who was leaning over the railing that looked over the gardens, she linked her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder. Drake smiled as he looked down at his daughter “You having a good time kid?”
“Yeah it’s just” she bent down, removed her heels and tossed them to the side “My feet are killing me” she groaned. Drake snorted and shook his head “You sound just like your mom”
Dakota rolled her eyes playfully “You always say that”
“Because it’s true” Drake retrieved his flask from his jacket pocket, he took a swig before offering it to Dakota “Seen as it’s your birthday, I thought you might want a drink”
Dakota tilted her head quizzically, a slight smirk on her face “You’re letting me drink? You never let me drink”
“I’d let you have a drink Dakota” he gave her a pointed look “What I don’t appreciate, is you sneaking out to get blackout drunk with your friends”
Dakota pulled her bottom lip between her teeth and looked up at the sky “You’re never going to let me forget that, are you?”
“Not a chance kiddo”
******
Drake slowly opened his eyes as he heard his phone vibrating on his bedside table. He peered at the alarm clock. Why is someone ringing me at 1am he reached over to grab his phone, squinting as the bright light hit his face. He frowned as Dakota’s name flashed across the screen and accepted the call
“Dakota your room is right down the hall, why-”
“Mr Walker, it’s Megan Dakota’s drank too much and she passed out, then she started throwing and now she’s locked in the bathroom and I don’t know what to do”
Drake sat up, trying to wrap his sleep filled mind around the information he’d just been bombarded with “Okay, just calm down” Drake rubbed his eyes “How did this happen?”
“My older brother is having a party, Dakota said she would sneak out-”
Drake could feel his anger rising as he listened to Megan’s panicked voice on the phone. This wasn’t the first time his 15 year old daughter had snuck out, however this was the first time one of her friends had called for help in the earlier hours of the morning. “I’m on my way” Drake ended the call and pushed himself out the bed, he quickly pulled on his clothes and tossed his phone onto the bed.
“Where are you going?” He heard Willows sleep filled voice from the bed
“To save our intoxicated daughter” Drake growled. He flung the bedroom door open and ran down the stairs. Retrieving the keys for his truck and made his way outside.
After the 30 minute drive he pulled up outside Megan’s house. A group of 17-18 year old’s were standing outside the house and music blaring from inside. Drake slammed the door of his truck shut and stormed into the house. He pushed his way through the sea of drunken teenagers and made his way up stairs. Drake found Megan sitting on the floor in front of the bathroom door, she quickly jumped to her feet as he approached. “She’s still in there?” He asked as jiggled the door handle
“She’s been in there for over an hour”
Drake let out an Aggregate breath as he banged on the door “Open the door Dakota” he pressed his ear to the door but heard nothing. He stepped back and kicked the door down with ease. He felt his anger rising again as he saw his daughter passed out, head hanging over the toilet. He crouched down beside her and rubbed her back “Dakota you need to wake up” he grimaced as she coughed and then proceeded to be sick. He sat and rubbed her back as he waited for her to finish. She groaned as she lifted her head “I want to go home” Drake nodded as he picked her up and carried her out to his truck.
Once they got back He carried her to the house, when he opened the door Willow was sitting on the couch, she jumped to her feet when she heard the door open “Oh my god what happened?” Drake lay her on the couch and then ran a hand through his hair “She snuck out to a party and got drunk”
Dakota groaned as she rolled over “I’m going to be sick” she mumbled as she coughed. She stumbled to her feet and into the bathroom.
Drake placed back and forth “I can’t fucking believe this” he huffed
“Drake you need to calm down”
“Calm down?” Drake turned and frowned at Willow “Our 15 year old daughter is currently throwing up in the bathroom after sneaking out to a party and you’re telling me to calm down?!” He threw his hands in the air.
Willow raised a brow and stared at him “And you, Liam and Max never did anything like this when you were younger?” Drake stared at her hands on his hips “Exactly, yes it’s wrong but it’s what kids do”
“How are you not angry”
“Oh I’m mad as hell, but shouting at her while her head is over the toilet isn’t going to help the situation”
Drake nodded as he sighed “You go to bed and I’ll make sure she’s okay”
******
Dakota grimaced “You didn’t speak to me for like a week after that”
Drake chuckled “I was mad that’s why”
“You made me do all the chores around the house” she shrieked “As well as the silent treatment”
“You didn’t learn your lesson though did you?”
“I always tell you and mom where I’m going now”
Drake turned to face her, one brow raised as he smirked. Dakota rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest “Okay, okay...I tell you most of the time”
Drake grinned as he pulled her into his side and kissed her head “Even though your a massive pain in the ass, you’ll always be my little girl”
She peered up at him and smiled “I love you dad”
“I love you too Koda” Drake bent down to pick up her shoes “Now let’s get you back inside before your mom and uncle Max send a search party” Dakota giggled and grabbed her shoes.
“I’ll tell you what Koda, beat me to the bar and I’ll buy you a drink”
Dakota grinned “What if you beat me?”
“Then you owe me one” Drake took off running towards the doors of the ballroom. Dakota pulled up her dress as she chased after him “Not fair dad, you got a head start!”

Needy
Harry thinks Y/N is needy
Weeks go by and almost all has been swept under the rug. As far as you knew Harry had been completely oblivious to the event he missed. Only ever asking questions about it when seeing the trophy and although it made you furious. Very furious. You made the conscious decision to pretty much pretend it never happened in order to save yourself the grief.
Why get so worked up over something that wasn't even a blip on his radar? He probably wouldn't react the way he's supposed to, therefore causing more drama so there was really no point.
Especially since he gets swept into a mania of his own and things are a little tense. Four different performances this week, a televised album release party slash live show, not including other TV appearances, and the perfectionist in him is running wild.
Okay so actually.. things are super tense these days.
The late rehearsals and early sound checks were meshing together. Cutting into the limited time that you two barely had to spend together. Since he was bound to start his international promotional tour in the following weeks.
Today it was Harry's idea to come out and spend the day with him and yet you wished to be anywhere he wasn't.
While in the backseat of a town car on the way to the venue, Harry was completely and utterly glued to his phone. Scowl on his face and stress apparent in the tension of his shoulders. You thought that it would help if you loved on him little bit, maybe with a warm squeeze around his tummy and chaste kiss to the cheek. So you did just that. Smiling an encouraging, "Love you," up at him and waiting for the returned gesture.
But you couldn't have been more wrong.
Harry flinches instinctively, startled more or less and when you smile at him he frowns thoroughly irritated, "Can yeh give me two bloody minutes to breathe? I literally feel like I'm suffocating!" he snaps.
Hurt, you deflate immediately muttering a quick, "Sorry," before sliding back on your side as close as possible to the window. Trying to give him the space he needed.
Harry kills all hope of the ride becoming pleasant again when he huffs a grim but satisfied, "Thank you." Then occupies himself with his phone again.
He doesn't say another word until you arrive at the venue, and it's to a production manager. You get a tour of the backstage area and then of the enormous arena itself. In that process your previous inner turmoil was put out by empathy and pride. All at once you understood why he was so on edge but you were also extremely proud of him. Jeff had just informed him that it was a sold out show too. That all these empty seats would be filled up just to see him.
Filled with enamor, you couldn't help yourself when you catch him coming off the stage. Quietly discussing a delay in the equipment set up with Jeff. A playful pat on his butt instantly grabs his attention and you smile excitedly, "You would be the one to sell out this massive place, I'm so happy for you babe!"
Jeff quickly makes himself scarce and for the lack of an audience your grateful. But perhaps you should've taken note because once again Harry startles in an irritable way. The muscles in his jaw taught as he suddenly and briskly ushers you by the upper arm to an unoccupied area backstage, "Jesus Christ, why are you everywhere I turn? You do realize that I'm working right now, right? I don't have time to deal with this needy shit all day."
Though this time around you struggle to just take it on the chin. Harry was literally treating you like some burden that begged to come and not like you had to clear your whole schedule of things that were actually top priority just to be here. "Needy? I'm just trying to be supportive!"
"Okay and you can't do that from the stands? You're not some sort of puppy that needs to be wrapped round my leg Y/N! Look, I know I invited you but the point is to enjoy the ride and go with the flow not stand in my way." The fact that he lowers his voice and yet his tone is blaring really hits you in the feelings.
It wasn't just because he was stressed but he genuinely felt that way.
Suddenly, you didn't want to be here nonetheless anywhere near him. You hoped that he detected your new jilted attitude, "Sorry, you're right. From now on you wont even know I'm here." You smile so overtly sweet it bleeds of sarcasm.
Harry doesn't even realize the lack of sincerity in it anyway. Stalking off after a surly, "Perfect." Leaves his lips.
With that you go to sit in the stands as he wanted, but on your way theres commotion coming from the same direction Harry just went. In the distance you spot him greet one of his opening acts with the most enthusiasm in the world. Hugging her and laughing with her like there wasn't a care in the world. When literally less than a minute ago he was yelling at you. Suddenly you couldn't get away from him fast enough. Only finding solace in the nosebleeds rather than the enticing idea of going home altogether.
This is disturbingly new. You'd been to plenty of Harry's shows where his moods often ranged from amped to sometimes getting nervous enough to maybe make him a little frustrated. But even then it wasn't unleashed on you, and like that. How could he treat you one way and in the next breath switch it up? You didn't like that one bit.
Watching his set was too difficult to enjoy anymore due to bias, unable to stop playing his words in your head. Needy? Was it really needy to show him some love in times he was obviously anxious? Definitely not, and even if it was it didn't give him an excuse to be an asshole about it. Especially since he wanted you to come in the first place.
Rehearsals drag on for what feels like eternity. Costume changes and numerous sound checks later, lunch is offered in the catering area but you politely decline. Hanger seemed like such a small price to pay in exchange for being subjected to his unnecessary attitude. In this case distance was best for the both of you.
Proven when he doesn't even bother to come look for you, or say anything really, at least not until he's ready to go home. Even then it's only a text.
On the ride home his mood has done a total 180. In the greatest mood to talk about his band mates and opening act's hijinks. You honestly tried not to take the way he acted personally but the complete personality flip made it impossible. How could he be that unfair?
Making it a point to avoid any and all contact with him by sitting in the same position as you had when you arrived. He uneasily takes notice, "Alright?"
"Yeah, just tired..." Of your bullshit! You mentally add on glaring out the window. Conveniently he received a phone call anyway.
Once you get home you decide to cure your possible hanger and make something quick to eat. Missing Harry reappear in the room in the process, "I guess catering doesn't count as dinner huh?" He attempts to be playful with you to check your temperature. Your unusual silence naturally made him uneasy.
"I didn't eat. Didn't want to risk overcrowding so I stayed in the stands," Like you wanted! You ached to add but held your tongue.
He doesn't dwell on it anyway. Chirping and fluttering about behind you as you make your way around the kitchen and to the table. "Love, guess what... I get to do a funny skit with James in a couple days!"
"That's great," you reply sitting down and albeit with forced enthusiasm.
He wordlessly follows suit practically singing, "Do yeh wanna come watch? It'll be fun."
Your sarcasm comes instinctively with a sharp roll of your eyes, "Like today? Hard pass, enjoy yourself though."
Harry's eagerness melts away like an ice cube on a hot summer sidewalk. No longer in the mood for elusiveness, "Alright I'll bite, what's going on with yeh?"
"With me? Nothing." You shrug shoveling around the food on your plate, loosing your appetite more and more by the second. Impending doom so palpable you could damn near taste that instead.
"Doesn't seem like nothing," he retorts with a brow cocked expectantly.
He could go to hell with the explanation he thought he deserved, "Doesn't matter," you sigh pleading to the high heavens that he'd leave it alone so that once again you could save yourself the agonizing grief.
Just as stubborn as you are he continues to push, "Based on how you're acting, it apparently does. So what is it?"
"Just drop it Harry," you groan agitated. At this rate you'll definitely be staying in the guest room tonight.
"No," This time he takes it a step further and moves your plate out of reach so that there was nothing to distract you. "Tell me." He demands.
Though the manner in which he does it is not to simply just to get to the root of the problem and solve it, but seems to be just for the confrontation. To point fingers at you being the problem, and so you snap, "Okay fine! You treat me like shit and it's not okay."
Unsurprisingly his face contorts into total confusion, "Where's this coming from?!"
But you're all too thrilled to remind him, "In the car and in rehearsals. One minute you're snapping at me for being needy when I was just trying to offer support, and in the next you're giving all the love and admiration to your opener and everyone else you work with!"
The frown etching on his face told you that he was going to deny everything and he did not disappoint, "No I wasn't, yeh were all over me,"
"Yeah okay, because reminding you that I love you and how proud I am is smothering?" An incredulous dry laugh summons itself, "Really?"
"When I'm in the middle of a conversation with Jeff! Obviously at that moment I was frustrated." Harry argues.
"You weren't frustrated when you hugged Kacy and joked around with Mitch right after! It's like everyone else gets a pass except me, but you know what it doesn't matter. Just keep that same energy so that I can properly navigate you. Because if I was suffocating then then I must be suffocating all the time." You glumly add, standing up and grabbing the plate you no longer had any interest in eating anymore.
In response Harry sighs loudly, and for a moment you start to believe that he's beginning to come to his senses but a quick glance reveals the most condescending and patronizing eye roll with it. Eventually he stands too, restoring his chair the way he found it. A passive yet aggressive, "Just forget I fucking asked," muttered under his breath.
Irking you enough to toss the plate absentmindedly into the sink, "Or just be a man about it and fucking own it!" You shout at him angrily.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean? I can't own something yeh literally made from nothing!" He shouts back.
"From nothing are you kidding me?! Why the hell is it so hard for you to admit when you're wrong! I am so tired of sweeping everything you do under the rug! I let that stupid fashion show slide but today-" Before you can get the words out properly its like something literally clicks in Harry's head. Making him angry as well.
His fingers rake frustratedly through his silky mane, "So that's what this is really about hmm? Why you've been acting so-" He exhales heavily through flared nostrils. You stare annoyed but patiently wait for him to make his point, "For fucksake how many times do we have to go through this? She is just a friend! Ken needed me-"
It's a combination of things. The way he says it and the gall of what he actually says that makes you feel three words short of a brain aneurysm. You explode, "She needed you? Harry, I needed you!" Your chest heaves from the exertion of shouting, "I made an absolute fool of myself that night! That had almost nothing to do with her and everything to do about us! The one fucking time I ask you to put me first, I'm last on your list. I know it's not the Grammy's or the Met Gala but it was important to me."
His head shakes in denial as he forces himself not to roll his eyes again, "Yeh miss things that are important to me all the time Y/N and I never whine about it!"
"If I'm whining about it its because there's a huge difference in not being able to catch a flight across the world at the last minute and not showing up to something on a whim— something I've been talking about for the past three years now!" You yell, so angry that it's actively getting harder to see straight. Apparently the wound had been fresher than you both thought.
"That's not fair," he argues. In his mind the situations were like comparing oranges to apples.
"Exactly." You concede folding your arms across your chest. Getting him to see the error in his ways was something like playing chess. Though the point wasn't to defeat but to enlighten. "How am I supposed to feel when you still don't even seem all that sorry or remorseful about it?"
Defense takes reign over Harry's better judgment as he starts to feel like this unethical argument is not meant for him to win, "Really? Over a bloody office party?!" He scoffs incredulous and somewhat amused at the same time. "I could understand if I did something actually wrong and horrible but this doesn't equate-"
At that another agonizing explosion erupts within and hits hard mentally and emotionally. Starting out as a fit of rage when you slam your hand down on the counter in reflex but rapidly that dwindles down into crushing defeat. It wasn't just the attempt in basically talking to a brick wall but the fact that he didn't want to accept what he did wrong. Maybe ego or even his foolish pride is to blame, either way he just wasn't going to.
Obviously you were wasting your breath but there was just one important fact that your very own pride wouldn't allow you to leave without getting it off your chest first, "Stop calling it that! Stop trying to diminish what it was! Because even if it was a lemonade stand it wouldn't have made the slightest difference — it was important to me Harry."
His gaze passively transfers to kitchen floor and for a few moments you wait for him to say something—anything. But when nothing comes you give up, heading straight to the guest room a total mess. So overwhelmed with frustration and emotions.

P.S. This is prior to me reading Book Two as well as a modified ending to Book One.
Tumblr media
“I….”
“Seriously? Did everything that’s happened the last few weeks mean so little to you?”
“No! Sawyer, I couldn’t say goodbye because the last few weeks have meant everything to me! All last night, I kept trying to find the right moment to tell you, but every time…I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.”
Sawyer shakes his head repeatedly, “I just don’t believe it. You could’ve said something when we snuck off, before we…we…”
He doesn’t finish his statement, he just turns away from her, hopping back up on his horse.
“Sawyer…”
“Hope that job gives you everything you want, Morgan.”
She watches as he taps the horse’s side, causing his horse to start walking back up to the ranch. Getting back in the car, she looks back at the Oakley’s, Cliff patting his son’s shoulder as he walks into the house.
I’m doing the right thing, right? This is what I’ve been working towards for years.
“Alright Spike, let’s go.” She looks over to at the cactus, but for some reason she gets the feeling that if it could, it would give her a disapproving look.
Fall
“What did you expect, Sawyer? She was just passin’ through and you barely knew each other.” Duke starts on his lecture as Sawyer aggressively shovels hay in the barn.
It has been three months since Morgan left, taking that fancy schmancy job in Boston, leaving the Montana gang behind her. But based off Sawyer’s behavior, you’d have thought that she left yesterday. Duke has never seen his brother this low over a girl before, sure he had a few interests in high school that ended, but this was different.
He props the shovel up against the wall before sitting on the floor. He runs his hands through his hair after sitting his hat on his knee.
“I guess I just thought she meant what she said.”
“I know it’s hard, but it does get easier, Sawyer.”
“Yeah, I’ve been hearing that a lot lately.” Standing up, he kicks the ground before walking out of the barn, not really feeling any better from his brother’s version of a pep talk.
Later that night, Sawyer let’s Juliette and Curly convince him to join their bonfire. Dallas and Jo are already there when they finally walk up.
“Hey y’all!” Juliette says as they all sit around the fire, seeing Sawyer looking at the spot that had been Morgan’s not so long ago.
“Are you excited for Smalltown, USA to come?” Jo says, trying to break the awkward silence.
“I think it will be a big thing for Sweetridge. Help put us more on the map,” Curly shrugs.
“What about you, Sawyer?”
“If it’s fixin’ to end like the last time a stranger came here, stayed and then just up and left, I think I’ll pass.” He pushes himself up and walks away.
“Morgan leaving really tore him up, didn’t it?” Jo asks as Juliette nods.
“I’ve never seen him this upset before, but you can’t blame him. Her leaving threw us all for a loop.”
“Should one of us go talk to him?” Curly asks, hating seeing a friend so upset.
“He’s not ready for help. But when he is, he’ll come askin’.”
*                      *
He finds himself driving with no real destination. Constantly flipping through the stations to try and find something to stop on. Every song so far has been one they listened to, reminded him of her or that she loved.
I've changed the presets to my truck,
So those old songs don't sneak up.
                                            But they still find me
                                                                   And remind me
Yeah you come back that easy
He slams on his breaks, pulling his truck over to the side of the road before he slams his palms against the steering wheel. He assaults the steering wheel some more, before he screams, “Fuck!”
Sawyer takes a deep breath, pulling himself together even though the tears on his cheeks show that he’s actually falling apart.
“Come back Morgan, come back to me,” his voice is low, almost a whisper, “Please.” His voice cracks as a sob escapes.
Winter
The Oakley’s, Mendoza’s and friends are all gathered together, watching their episode of the reality TV show.
“We can clearly see who the main character of this episode is,” Juliette jokes, nudging Sawyer’s shoulder with her knee since he was sitting on the floor in front of her.
“I’m just flaunting what my Momma gave me,” he playfully shrugs.
“I really hope we don’t get an influx of people moving in. I’d hate for the smalltown charm to be taken over.” Asha says, “Tourists I’m fine with. Residents, not so much.”
“I can agree with that,” Cliff said.
“You think Morgan is watching this?” Curly says, slightly hopeful.
Almost everyone gives him a dirty look before hearing Sawyer sigh, “If she was ever the girl I thought I knew, I’d say she is. She has to miss y’all.”
Juliette rubs his shoulder, “She misses you too, Sawyer.”
He shrugs, standing up, “Yeah, I don’t know about all that. ‘Scuse me, I need some air.”
Juliette follows Sawyer outside, “She’d be a fool not to think about you.”
He shakes his head, “The only fool is me, thinking that what she and I had was anything more than some fling.”
She wraps her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. Their friendship was the perfect solace for Sawyer, Juliette didn’t demand anything back but for his support when she needed it and help when she found herself in trouble.
He winces, her brow knits as she gently slides his shirt up, revealing dark purple bruises, “Ohmygod! Sawyer what is that!”
“Looks like a bruise to me,” was not the proper response he learned when she swatted his arm, “I got roughed up training for the rodeo.”
“What!?! I didn’t know you were training.”
“I just needed something to do to get her out of my head.”
“By the looks of this, she’s still in your head.” Her fingertips gently rub over the bruises.
He leans down, pressing his forehead to the top of her head. He takes a deep breath, inhaling her scent. They’ve never walked so close to the edge before. They were friends, that’s all. Sure, they were each other’s better half, but that’s just what best friends right?
“Jules ,” he whispers as he pulls her chin up towards him. He presses his lip to her, trying to find comfort, find what he’s been missing since Morgan left, but he doesn’t.
“Sawyer,” she pushes him away slightly. Looking at his face, she sees pure guilt. She places a hand on his cheek, giving him a gentle smile.
“I’m sorry.” He kicks the dirt at his feet.
“I’m not mad, but that isn’t how you’re gonna get over this.”
“I know.” He shoves his hands in his pockets.
She loops her arm with his, “Let’s go drink, huh? Oh, and Sawyer?”
“Yeah?”
“You ain’t half bad at kissing.”
Spring
“And the winner is Dick Mullagen, with a score of 86!” The crowd is a mix of cheering and boos after the announcer give the name of the winner.
“That’s a bunch of horse manure if you ask me,” Curly says, “He had that one in the bag!”
“Hey, here he comes,” Jo says as Sawyer walks over to the group.
“Just need a little more practice, is all,” Cliff says, patting his son on the back of his shoulder, “I’m still proud of you, son.”
“Thanks dad.” Sawyer smiles, it’s the first sincere smile he’s worn since Morgan left.
“Hey Oakley,” Dick yells from behind him, “I’d say better next time, but we all know I’ll win.”
Sawyer rolls his eyes.
“Do you think his mother knew he was going to be a total dick or that he became a dick because that’s his name?” Dallas asks, causing the whole group to erupt in laughter.
*                      *
“You done training for the day, Oakley?”
He pulls on Dolly’s harness, stopping her before looking over at Juliette. She was carrying a pitcher of lemonade. He hops off his horse and joins her for a glass.
“Refreshing, Mendoza.” He winks at her.
The two have seemingly moved passed the kiss they shared, but each would be lying if they said they weren’t thinking about it. A few touches lingered, cheeks blush and late nights lasted longer.
They weren’t going to overstep the wall between friends and more than friends again because they couldn’t. Not because of the feud or that they were being stubborn. Sawyer knew Juliette, she was his best friend, and she deserved someone who would give her the world. Sawyer knew he couldn’t give her that, right now she’d just be a rebound, something she never deserved to be for anyone.
But he wouldn’t say no to some harmless flirting.
“How are you feeling nowadays? You haven’t mentioned her lately?” Juliette says, sitting next to him.
“Better. I think I just needed to find what made me happy again.” He sighs, “I still miss her though. It just doesn’t hurt as badly.”
“As long as it’s not destroying you, it’s completely normal.”
He sighs, leaning his head on her shoulder, “Is it wrong that if given the chance, I’d want to try again with her?”
“Nope. Not at all. As long as you don’t lose yourself.” She tilts her head, resting it on his, “I’ll be here for you, every step of the way.”
Summer
Sawyer wipes the sweat from his brow before placing his hat back on. Dolly trotted up to him, nudging him with her snout.
“You want a treat, girl?” Sawyer chuckles.
“Neiigghh!” The horse exclaims before chopping down on the carrot Sawyer holds out for her.
“We have another busy day today, Dolly.”
The horse’s demeanor changes, her ears duck down and she shakes her head.
“I know girl. But you’ll get extra carrots, how’s that?” Sawyer rubs the mare’s neck. She seems okay with this exchange and trots off before he can change the deal.
Shaking his head, he laughs before he hears a high pitch squeal and turns to see Brit. He puts on a smile, not his typical charming one, but a smile nevertheless.
“Sawyer!” She throws her arms around his neck, pulling him close to her.
“Hey Brit. You ready?”
“Of course!” She steps back and does a twirl, “Like my outfit?”
Sawyer looks down the slender blonde’s outfit, it was once again not an appropriate one, but she never listened to him. She has on a strappy short sundress with brand new cowboy boots. Clearly, they were bought when she first met Sawyer. Her long blonde hair was braided and tossed to the side.
“You look nice, Brit.” He bites the inside of his lip. Sawyer gathers up a horse for her and whistles for Dolly to join them.
After exerting little effort, she pokes out her lip and stomps her foot, “Sawyeerrr!” She whines, “I need help!”
He walks over to her, holding the top of the saddle and has his hand on her back, “Just step up and then swing your leg over.”
“Yay! I did it!” She squeals.
“You sure did,” he walks over to Dolly, who just stares at him. He lowers his voice, “oh hush.”
Once he is on Dolly, the two of them begin riding around the field.
*                      *
“I really enjoyed today, Sawyer,” Brit says before they stop and he hops off.
“I’m glad that you did. You’re getting a lot better.” He places his hand on her lower back to help her get down.
“I’m even better at riding in other ways,” she gives him a flirtatious smile as his face turns completely red.
“Now Miss Brit, that’s no way for a lady to talk.”
She tosses her head back, laughing, “If you’d let me, I’d show you I’m not lady.” She places her hand on his arm, letting it linger against his muscles.
“Same time tomorrow, Cowboy?”
“Same time tomorrow,” he tips his hat towards her before she walks away from him.
Reaching down, he grabs a carrot for each mare before he hears Curly yell, “Morgan, wait!”
He snaps his head in their direction, “Morgan?” He drops the carrot, much to Dolly’s dismay and runs after her.
“Morgan! Morgan, stop!” He shouts, pushing himself to run faster. “Wait!” He hits him palms on the hood of her car, almost daring her to drive off.
“Sawyer, move please.”
“Not until you talk to me.”
“There’s nothing to say,” her voice cracks, the tears falling.
“Get out of the car, please.”
“Just move, let me go.”
“Get out of the car, dammit!”
With a small huff, she gets out of the driver’s side before he walks over and stands in front of her.
“Don’t you have some blonde to get back to,” her voice is sharp.
He chuckles, “You mean Brit? Jealous?”
“As if. She looks as smart as that fence post.”
He chuckles again before explaining to her what Brit was doing at the ranch. That ever since Smalltown, USA aired the episode on Sweetridge, that tons of people came to the Oakley ranch for horseback riding lessons. How his brother sold him out since the women would pay extra for Sawyer to teach them.
She looked up at him completely embarrassed, her face burning red while her mouth once again went dry.
“I’m sure that’s not why you came back here though.” He has one hand pressed against the car by her head while the other hangs by his side “Why’d you come back, Morgan?”
Sawyer would be lying if he said he wasn’t glad she was back. That he had dreamed of this moment for a whole year now. But he was trying so hard to not let himself go there, he couldn’t go through that pain again.
“You.” Her voice in low, raw from the emotions flooding over her.
He leans into her, a huge smile on his face, “What was that?”
Looking up, she catches the look in his eye. It was the same look she’s had since leaving Boston the second time. She wraps her arms around his neck, pulling him into her because she presses her lips to his. He wraps his arms around her waist, pushing her into him, deepening the kiss.
“Sawyer,” she moans, feeling him kiss down her neck.
“Oh, get a room, would ya!” Curly and Juliette yell at the couple.
“That’s not a bad idea,” she winks as he picks her up, “Then let’s go.”
*                      *
Morgan has her head resting on Sawyer’s chest, one of his arms wrapped around her. They lay there, wrapped in nothing but each other and a thin sheet.
“Morgan,” his breathing is slow, she swore he had fallen asleep.
“Yes?”
“What about Boston?” He feels her stiffen next to him, “I can’t do this again if you’re just gonna leave.”
She sits up, looking over at him, “I quit.”
“You quit?”
“I left Boston for good. I quit my job. I came here…for you. For us.” She takes a deep breath, “That is, if you’ll take me back.”
He runs his finger through his hair as he sits up, “Morgan, I…I don’t want you to regret leaving Boston.”
“I went there, I was miserable without you.” She straddles his lap, “I want to be here. With you.”
He chuckles as she reaches over and placing his black hat on her head, “What on earth are you doing?”
“If I’m going to stay here, I think I need a refresher course on riding,” she winks just before he pulls her into his chest and kisses her, “And I hear you’re the perfect teacher.”

The Witch's Familiar
TITLE: The Witch’s Familiar CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: Chapter 25/?
AUTHOR: nekoamamori ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine getting so attached to Lokitty early on that you insist on carrying him just about everywhere.  RATING: T (so far)
The hour was late when you finally decided to leave the gardens. /Sera, we’re heading inside. I’ll leave the balcony doors open if you want to stay outside and play longer/ you mind-called to the dragon as you and Loki slipped out of your alcove and back onto the path. The dragon was flying in loops high above the palace and way to high to hear your physical voice, but she could hear you telepathically.
She swooped down and landed gracefully in front of you. “Come fly with me? Just for a minute!” she nearly begged. You hesitated. Your broom was and home and the spare you had started keeping within easy summons after the explosion incident had been your moms and was tempermental.
“I don’t have wings, Sera,” you finally told her.
She rolled her eyes and huffed. “I’ll carry you silly. Please come. It’ll be such fun,”
“Fine, fine,” you told her goodnaturedly. You looked over to Loki, it was rude to just abandon him, even for a minute. “You don’t mind-?” He shook his head and gestured to the dragon, looking amused.
“Go right ahead. I shall wait for you with my feet firmly on the ground,” he told you with a smile. He didn’t think this was going to end well. He wasn’t worried over your safety, though, which was good. You glanced around to make sure no one besides Loki was watching, but you and Loki were alone in the gardens. You hiked up your skirts to your thighs, which was the reason you had looked for watchers, and swung onto Sera’s back. There was a perfect spot for you just in front of her wing joints. You settled in, got your balance, and even managed to find a handhold. You felt her muscles bunch under you as she leapt into the air. You laughed and shrieked in joy and delight at the rush of wind through your hair, the exhilaration of flying that fast. She dove and swooped and sped through the air faster than any broom you’d ever ridden. She did a couple of circuits of the gardens before she landed next to Loki gracefully and gently.
“That was amazing, Sera,” you told her and she trilled happily. You swung your leg over to dismount. Loki was there in an instant, reaching up to help you down. You placed your hands on his shoulders when his hands touched your waist and he lifted you down easily from Sera’s back. “That is way better than a broom,” you informed him as he set you gently on your feet. He did not look at all liked he agreed with you. He liked keeping his feet firmly on the ground. You carefully straightened out your skirts so they were presentable again. Hitching them up to ride a dragon wasn’t exactly ladylike, but you didn’t want to spend magic changing clothes right now. He looked away while you did and you had a feeling based on his flush that he had seen more skin than he had been anticipating. Oops.
Sera shifted back to her cat-dragon form and fluttered sleepily into your arms. You held her cradled safely to your chest. She was much too tired after playing so much to perch on your shoulder. Loki’s arm draped around your shoulders while you hid a yawn behind your familiar. “I shouldn’t be this tired. I slept all day,” you whined at him as he led you back inside. You rested your head on his shoulder as you walked.
“Darling, you know perfectly well that you spent all day healing and recovering your magic. It’s no wonder that you’re tired. I shouldn’t have kept you out this late. I just wished for you to see my home,” he admitted softly, warmly, proudly.
“It was fun, Lokitty,” you replied warmly.
He smiled and kissed your forehead. “That may be, dearest, but you’re dead on your feet. I best get you to bed while you can still walk there,” he added with a smirk. You looked up and stuck your tongue out at him. He chuckled in reply.
It didn’t take long to reach Loki’s suite. He left you at the doorway to check the rooms for intruders before he’d let you come inside, he checked all of the rooms in your connected suite as well. You were used to the behavior after Halloween and didn’t question or argue with him over it. It was adorably overprotective and didn’t hurt anything, so you didn’t begrudge him the peace of mind. He walked you as far as your sittingroom. “I’m sure you can find your bed from here, little sorceress,” he teased.
“I’m not that tired,” you protested, but had to hide another yawn behind your cat.
“Sure you aren’t, darling,” he replied warmly. He bent to kiss you and you stood up on your toes to meet him half way. He gave you a mischievous smirk when he broke the kiss and you saw that his cat-ears were back in place, temporarily. You knew he wouldn’t risk others on Asgard seeing them. You grinned and reached up to scratch behind one. It was still stupid that you had missed them. They weren’t part of his natural form. They were just so fucking adorable. “Get some sleep, my love,” he bid you warmly.
“Goodnight, Lokitty,” you replied. He stepped back into his own suite and made a show of firmly closing the connecting door behind him. He wanted to make sure you felt comfortable and safe. Thoughtful fluffy god. You made sure the door to the hallway was locked and made your way to your bedroom. You saw that your bed was turned down and a nightgown laid out for you. You suspected the maids. You set Sera on the bed, where she curled up sleepily on the pillow you laid out for her. You were in bed a minute later and asleep nearly as soon as your head hit the pillow.
    *
Sunday was the day for dinner at mom’s. It was a weekly appointment. You were running late that week since you had made the terrible decision of breaking up with your latest suitor that day. The relationship had needed to end. There hadn’t been anything truly wrong with the man, but he just seemed more interested in your power than you. So you ended it before it got too far. It still broke your heart to do, and was causing you to be late for dinner. You should have picked another day, but you wanted to hug your mommy after the deed had been done and get comfort from her and commiserate about how stupid males were.
On later contemplation, the fact that you were late that day had saved your life.
Or maybe you would have been able to save her.
    You’d never know for sure.
You flew in on your broom, the pie you had made to contribute to dinner balanced in your lap and your familiar perched on your shoulder. You smelled the fire as soon as you landed. Kaci leapt off your shoulder and ran toward your mom’s cottage. But that wasn’t where the fire was coming from. Kaci ran back from the cottage, meowing for help. You dropped the pie and it splattered on the ground as you ran around behind the cottage, following the smell of the fire, the sound of the screams.
    The screams.
You couldn’t describe the heartbreak and terror of hearing the wails of agony that came from a voice you never wanted to hear in pain. Your mom was the one making that awful heartbreaking sound.
    You ran faster.
You had to get to her.
    Had to save her.
    Had to help.
You skidded to a halt when you saw the scene in your mom’s little garden. As her screams stopped. The scene was so horrific you couldn’t comprehend it at first. There was a pile of wood on fire, a long pole sticking up from the middle of it. Your mom always chopped wood for the winter, but didn’t leave it in the middle of her garden…
Then your brain noticed the men in the black robes, chanting around the flames as they drew it higher, hotter. “Consume it all. There can be no evidence left of this black witch,” one of the men said.
    Witch Hunters.
They were only supposed to hunt corrupted witches and wizards, those who were a menace to society. They were supposed to bring them before the witches’ council to stand trial for their misdeeds.
They weren’t supposed to burn innocent little hearth witches at the stake.
Your mom’s ghost appeared in front of you, stopping you before you could charge forward to save her. She was already gone. She kissed your forehead, obviously relieved that you were safe. “I will hold them off as long as I can. Run, Daughter. Run, now! Straight to the headmistress. RUN!” she ordered, urgently, firmly, in that tone all mothers acquired. The one that insisted on immediate obedience.
The men turned, finally seeing you. “Catch her! She’s the spawn of the black witch!”
“Kaci!” you yelled for your little cat, but your familiar howled for you to run. She would stand with your mother’s ghost to hold the men off while you made your escape. The witch hunters had power and they were strong. You couldn’t fight them off. It shamed you to this day that you obeyed your mom and Kaci, that you turned and ran, that you escaped instead of fighting.
That you let your familiar die instead of staying to fight with her.
That you let her sacrifice herself for you.
“Wake up, love. Please, wake up!” Loki’s voice broke through the nightmare. His tone was urgent, desperate. “Wake up, Y/N. It’s a nightmare. You’re safe,” he promised you helplessly. You bolted awake, panting, panicking. Loki was holding you in his arms. You clutched onto him and sobbed into his chest. He stroked your hair, running his fingers through the tangle your hair had become, thrashing around lost to nightmares. You should have expected this nightmare after facing the witch hunters.“Shh, love, shh, it’s alright. You’re safe. It was just a nightmare. It can’t hurt you anymore,” his words were soft and gentle, calming in his honeyed accented voice. His cool touch was such a contrast to the fire that you could finally relax, could finally slow your tears.
“I saw- I - I saw-” you nearly started weeping again.
Loki kissed your forehead softly. “I know, dearest. You don’t have to try to tell me. I saw,” you looked up at him confused, tears still in your eyes. He didn’t pry with his telepathy and you had good shielding around your mind. He shouldn’t have been able to pry, at least not without you knowing about it. He kissed your forehead again. “You were projecting. That’s what woke me. Don’t fear. I shielded the rest of the palace.” At least no one else would have seen your nightmare.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have-” you shouldn’t have lost control. Shouldn’t have projected your nightmares on others.
“Shh, it’s alright,” he reassured you, pulling you back more firmly into the safety of his arms. Sera was curled in your lap, squashed like a very well loved plushie. “I’m sorry you lost your mom and your familiar like that, but they were right, love. The first rule of combat is to survive. Sometimes the only way to do that is to run, to live to fight another day. Those men would have killed you too had you not run. You were severely outnumbered. You did the right thing, my darling,” he reassured you again. He held you for awhile longer, stroking your hair, kissing your forehead, reassuring you with his cool presence that you were safe from the fire, from those men. “You should go back to sleep, dearest,” he told you softly when you were finally calm again.
“I can’t-” you told him softly, shuddering. You couldn’t face that nightmare again tonight.
He smiled warmly and kissed you lightly. “It was a nightmare, love. A dream, nothing more. It cannot harm you anymore. No nightmares can harm you so long as I am here. I swear it, my darling. I love you dearest; I will keep you safe,” he promised. He tucked you safely back in his arms and pulled the blanket up around you. He held you, safely, stroking your hair, while your exhausted mind and body succumbed to his cool presence; his promise of safety, even from nightmares.
“Loki,” you murmured softly, your voice a loving whisper before you fell asleep, safe in his arms, listening to his chest rumble as he purred for you.

Tonight’s Word is Inevitability
There’s a threshold that everyone crosses between childhood and adulthood. For some people, stepping across that threshold is akin to getting a boost of rocket fuel. I’ve known people who met and exceeded all expectations. They excelled at prestigious universities and entered lucrative professions. One even spent time working in the White House.* Aided by family, friends, and a considerable amount of luck, the path through their threshold likely shone brightly.
For most people, that threshold is covered in fog. You look across it and catch shadowy glimpses of possibilities. Years spent grappling with sexuality. A chance at college and movement up the ladder. A string of useless exes and a baby you were ill-equipped to care for. The only certainty is uncertainty, and the threshold is always getting closer. Some people step confidently across. Most of us lurch across gracelessly, praying we don’t fall.
Later on, things level out, and we look back at the threshold with a mixture of nostalgia and nausea. The right coming of age story can conjure those feelings. It can portray its young characters accurately and simultaneously show us who they’re likely to become. Stand By Me is one of the best examples of these films. The new release Low Low gives that classic a run for its money.
Vancouver, Washington is nobody’s idea of paradise. You could do a hell of a lot worse, but you could also do a hell of a lot better. For Candace (Montana Roesch), otherwise known as Cherry, she’s two days away from putting Vancouver in her rearview mirror and attending Evergreen College. Before she leaves, she’ll need to wrap things up with her sweet boyfriend Memo (Adam Elshar). More importantly, she’ll need to say goodbye to some, if not all of her friends.
Ryan (Ali Richey) might join her, but that chance hangs by the thinnest of threads. She’s got a brain in her head, but her home life is a disaster. She lives with her mother Sylvia (Elaine Hendrix), a woman fueled by a dangerous combination of alcohol, resentment, and a parade of bonehead boyfriends. Is it any surprise she’s acting out? Nobody believes in her potential, except for Dr. Ellison (Moniqua Plante), a caring teacher at her community college. If Ryan can nail an exam, Dr. Ellison will give her a letter of recommendation that unlocks a scholarship to Evergreen.
While Cherry and Ryan have something like a future, Willy (Alexis Raich) is all about living in the present. Willy has the forward-thinking capabilities of a fruit fly. She’s the kind of person who wakes up when she’s 35 with a couple of unplanned kids, a useless guy in her life, a go-nowhere job, and no clue how it all happened. There’s also Lana (Kacie Rogers), a perceptive girl so sharp she deserves to be recruited by the CIA. Unfortunately, she desperately wants to come out, and we get the sense that there aren’t many people in her life to hug her and tell her it’s okay.
With two days before the foursome splits apart, there’s a lot going on. Willy may have had unprotected sex with the boyfriend of unstable bully Tanya (Savannah Stehlin). That action spurs a frantic hunt for the morning-after pill and instigates a savage ass-kicking. The girls try a variety of drugs, brazenly steal beer, and take their first tentative steps toward the rest of their lives.
The characters in Low Low aren’t bad people—far from it. They occupy a twilight area between abject poverty and semi-comfortable middle-class existence. By and large, they’re ignored, forgotten, and rarely receive the social and financial advantages that a kid from Boulder, Colorado blithely enjoys.
They’re also the kind of characters rarely seen on-screen these days, and director Nick Richey is to be commended for that. He’s made a film that’s unflinchingly realistic about the likely options these girls have available to them, and the moments of hope that can keep them moving forward. The jittery score by Heavy Young Heathens, the natural cinematography by Pascal Combes-Knoke, and Richey’s honest direction create a feeling of propulsive energy.
As the screenwriter, Richey creates something of a rarity. For his main characters, he writes four distinctive characters, shows us the various group dynamics, and makes us believe they are really friends. If you’re a parent watching this film, get ready for a gutshot of anxiety as the girls encounter a number of challenges that feel uncomfortably realistic. They’re surrounded by booze, drugs, sexual objectification, a murky future, and glimmers of hope.
One of the toughest kinds of characters for an actor to portray is a normal person. All of the leads deliver natural and genuine performances, but I was particularly impressed with Ali Richey as Ryan. As the film progresses, we see a protective shell hardening over her. Watch the scene in the school gym where Cherry gives Ryan a pep talk. Ali Richey says nothing, but we see that shell slowly opening as she exposes her vulnerability. Actors twice her age couldn’t pull that one off.
Talented direction, impressive acting, and a perceptive screenplay make Low Low a gritty gem of a film. It’s playing in select theaters and streaming platforms, and trust me when I tell you that it’s worth seeking out.
*For clarification, not working for the current occupant of the White House.

Nepenthe (noun) - Something that makes you forget pain and suffering.
Knock on my door, boy come home
You stay in my head
Lay in my arms, why won't you?
It's been way too long, what you waiting on?
It was a long drive, as they finally reached the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the states. Bryce never agreed on a 3-day trip of driving from Boston to the infamous canyon. After a long 40 hours of driving, and stopping. Bryce and Lennox has arrived at the spot, where it was almost sundown.
Lennox was the one who suggested upon the idea, as she wanted a new experience including taking a long trip to Arizona, after the tragedy strikes. They were given a leave as, Bryce took a few measures along with infamous pick-up lines to convince Harper on taking a leave. It worked, and here they are.
‘We are here!’ A surprisingly enthusiastic Lennox get out of the car, as she took a breath of the fresh air. It smells very weird, but it’s definitely not Edenbrook. She loved Edenbrook, but she felt a new environment was needed. A new space for her to breath, as the sun was about to set in an hour.
‘Let’s get ourselves cozy, Hirata here take the food.’ An exhausted Bryce was heard, as Lennox marched into the back of the car taking the basket of food for the night. They didn’t packed much, except a few unhealthy ones, and some take-out from their journey which is enough to survive the night.
Bryce took care of the rest, as they hike their way up the canyon. It wasn’t the prettiest view at the time being, but he felt happy to take her out here. Away from the commotion of their work life, where it was only them against the real world. Including Keiki too.
After a long hour of hiking, they finally reached one of the many tops of the canyon. It was a perfect view of the whole lot, as Lennox placed the food, as Bryce gets the stuff ready. He lays out a large blanket, and Lennox sat on top of it as soon as she could. A small price of enthusiasm as he lets out a small chuckle, taking a seat next to her. It was quiet, as they were the only beings that were known there.
The sun has already set, as they ate their subway take-outs. It wasn’t the best after a long drive, but their tummies are full and that’s what matters. After a session of eating, Lennox found herself staring at the night sky. It was dark, as the source of light was from their phones and a couple of emergencies flashlight but, the moon above them were doing the work.
Bryce felt himself staring at her, a small gesture that he would do everytime. He adored her, from the very first time he saw her. She was strong, kind, empathetic despite the sass she owns. Lennox Hirata was her own woman, and Bryce found himself falling for her, despite their feelings haven’t returned. At least, not yet.
He realizes his feelings towards her, after the funeral. The fear of losing her, was seen within him as he lets his walls down for her. Something he had tried so hard on doing, a small sacrifice for the chance to reduce the pain little-by-little. Somehow, Lennox felt like his weakness, the fear of never seeing her again lingers in his mind, a broken record that was played over and over again.
The flashback from before, replayed once more as he remembered witnessing Lennox, in a weak state. She wasn’t the cheerful person he knows, as the light in her eyes had disappeared since that day. Followed by losing two of the closest people in her life in front of her eyes, an event that one will never forget.
‘…Earth to Bryce...’ Her voice was heard, looking worried at his state.
Bryce shook his head, as an attempt to bring his consciousness back into reality. A smile was plastered on his face, as the tears started to fall a bit.
‘What’s wrong?’ She never understand why, but every time she witness of Bryce being vulnerable. She felt her heart break a little, somehow seeing one of the most confident people in her life, willing to share this part of his life with her, a misfit in disguise? Lennox Hirata.
‘..That moment, its playing in my mind Len. I know you told me, you are okay. Look, you are. But-‘ He found himself pause.
‘I kept on imagining the worst, there were moments where I woke up thinking that you are not here anymore. You were taken away from me, and…it terrifies me.’ He took a deep breath, as he lets the truth out, something he had been experienced lately, as he found himself imagining the worst whilst encouragement from Keiki.
‘C’mon, its in the past Bryce…it’s okay’ Lennox tried to brushed the topic of, a saddened look on her face.
‘No, you could’ve died. It’s serious.’ He replies with a hint of hurt in his voice.
‘But, I am here now. I am here with you, and I’m not going anywhere alright?’ She closed the gap between them, and pulled him into a hug. She didn’t realize, she felt her tears were falling too. She remembered that night all too well, she almost died. The night where she knew her life had changed one way or another. Witnessing Bobby’s and Danny’s death, was a hard pill to swallow.
After the hug, they pulled away. She was never the one to show affection, but she always loved the little things. She was never a fan of public display of affection, but holding each other’s hands, cheek kisses, hugs, and many more were her way of affection. A small squeeze of a hand, the common gesture for them both.
She took his hand in hers, as his big ones covering her tiny one. They weren’t a perfect fit, but it felt right. Giving it a small squeeze, as crying wasn’t apart of the plan.
Silent tears was heard, as they both lie down on the blanket, somehow their faces were facing each other.
He never looked more beautiful.
She looks like an angel from above.
He brushed the hair was covering her eyes, as they continue to stare upon the night sky. The world was sleeping, as the surroundings was empty. It was them, and them only. The moon shines brightly above them, as the twinkling light of the stars were seen. A small callback to their planetarium date, the moment where she was discovering the feeling that was hovering in her mind on a certain figure named Bryce Lahela.
‘I fought and I survive, but… why do I feel like life is more than that?’
She glances his way, hoping for an answer. Both of them were silence, as neither know the answer.
‘..I remember the day I left Hawaii, left everything behind.. I feel like, I was helpless and I couldn’t survive on my own. It felt a long road, and…after all those obstacles… I am here where I was meant to be. Life is definitely more than surviving, its the feeling of not giving up and keep going despite how many bumps life give you one way or another.’
Bryce replies as both of them continue on gazing the stars,  it was shining brightly. It felt like, she was somewhere far far away from the real world upon stepping into space.
‘If it is meant to be? How do you know this isn’t a fatal coincidence?’
‘You do have a lot of questions don’t you Len?’ He smiles, finally after all the crying they have done.
‘Hey, I am a curious human being. It’s my nature after all.’ She winks, as her eyes gazed over the galaxy above them.
‘Well, curious human being. I am at your service, hit me with your best shot.’
She raised an eyebrow, earning a questionable look from him.
‘What?’
‘The question earlier dummy.’ Lennox lets out a laugh, as their laughter fills the void surrounding them.
‘Ahhh… where do I begin..’ He mimicking the scary professors from those crappy haunted movies, that made her cringe so bad.
‘Just cut to chase Lahela.’ Lennox demanded with a hint of laughter in her voice, earning herself a sensual wink from him.
‘Ok, okay. Hold your horses Hirata! I don’t feel like I have been paying attention much to how life works, but…I believe that everything has been written in the stars. Every step of this ride, have been written down in the stars and its our chance to see it unfold when the time has come..’
Lennox felt herself humming to a song that has been in her mind for the past week, Stars by Alessia Cara.
Piercing lights in the dark make the galaxy ours
Kingdom right where we are
Shining bright as a morning, you'll never be lonely
Just promise you'll love me, I'm never too far
And we'll never part
And we could be stars
Bryce was somehow stunned? As, her voice flowed through the night. She felt herself flushed, as she punched him lightly on the shoulder. A small act that ended up with laughter.
‘Tonight, it felt like the stars are looking down on us. Just, shining our lives in a way a light would do. It feels lonely out here on our own, but… looking above, the stars felt like a companion to us. I.. have always loved the stars. There was a moment… years ago, I was alone in my room. It was night time, and I was lucky enough to have a view on my bedroom window. It was spectacular, as the stars felt like something out of the painting, and I dreamed of touching it with my bare hands.’ She explained, with a smile on her face with her hands forward as an attempt to capture the stars which is impossible but, she didn’t care. It felt like she was a child once more, living this world with a huge dream ahead.
‘That sounds …amazing.’ His eyes linger on her for a while, somehow a small smile was formed of from adoration. I love her, he thought silently as his eyes soften at the sound of giggles coming out from her.
They continue on their small adventure, until it was dawn. An hour before, after exchanging stories, including those that made her laugh till her tummy hurts.
‘You know, we have known each other for two years now.’ She stated.
‘Yeah?’
Lennox nodded, somehow in disbelief at how far they have come from becoming strangers to falling in love silently with him which she didn’t feel like admitting too yet.
‘It somehow felt like a lifetime ago…’
She said quietly, as Bryce nods in agreement taking her hand in his.
‘Yeah, but… we still have a whole life ahead of us right?’
He looked at her, with a hint of hope in his eyes. A new path was suddenly carved, a whole lot of adventures that will followed them. Lennox Hirata’s adventures at Edenbrook started a lifetime ago, as she fought for life, death, friendships, and even love. There were still pages in her book waiting to be written, as she said yes to a whole life ahead, a life where she will keep on fighting to be the person who she was meant to be with the present of those who she loved and cared deeply.
THE END.
A/N: Hi, dropping by again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and know that.. hope is always there. I realized it and, I hope it’s always gonna be there. And, @arcticlumineer you are gonna fight this. I believe in you. <3

*****
It had been six months since that day. The day that the Queen of Cordonia realised that her fairytale life had been snatched away from her in an instant. Today was the first day in which she had made an effort with her appearance. Upon her arrival she could sense that all her friends were eager to pounce on her, demanding to know that she was okay. Interrogate her. Keeping that stoic expression, she avoided conversations with her close friends- instead just remained civil with her children and people such as Francesco. Keeping a speech minimal, she thanked everyone for coming before returning to her quarters. Alone. This had been a common occurrence- keeping herself guarded. Not allowing anyone to break down the walls that she had built up.
Jackson noticed that his Auntie had been specifically quiet since that day six months ago. Walking over towards Princess Ayah and Prince Louis, they both smiled softly - however provided sorrow in their eyes.
“Is your Mom okay?” Ayah shook her head. Not really knowing how to explain the mask that Riley was wearing to hide her true feelings.
“She’s not coping, Jackson. I’m scared that she’s going to do something stupid. Before we existed, she tried to end her life in New York. My Father didn’t want to tell us about it, but he did one night to explain how much of a fighter our Mom is. She isn’t talking to anyone apart from us and her Godchildren. Whenever any of her friends try to talk to her, she shuns them away. Maybe Uncle Drake could try and talk to her again? Because you know....” Jackson didn’t need Ayah to continue that sentence, he knew full well what she was about to say.
“I’ll go and mention it to him. Don’t worry about Aunt Ri. She has everyone here, supporting her.” Kissing the Princess on the cheek, he scrutinised the room for his father. Jackson Walker adored his ‘cousins’ and ‘Auntie’- even though they wasn’t blood, he felt as if they were.
******
“Brooks....” Feeling like this was a waste of time, Drake decided that the best option was to walk away, as she wasn’t responding. Jackson placed a comforting hand onto his father’s shoulder, suggesting that Drake should leave. Feeling like a failure, to Ayah who believed that they would get her Mom to open up to them- Jackson decided to try himself. Listening to his son’s advise, Drake left in a swift motion- frustrated that he couldn’t persuade her to come out of her hovel and just talk.
“Aunt Ri?” Jackson said softly as he knocked on the door. Riley knew she was being stubborn whenever a visitor would knock on the door- but for some reason she could never ignore her children, or her friends children.
“Jackson.” Smiling at his Auntie, he pulled her in for a tight hug. “What can I do for you?”
“Have a walk? Or just a little talk with me? We all miss you, and we want to help you through it. Dad just wants to help too. You could help each other?”
“You’re only twenty one Jackson, you should be out with your friends- enjoying life. Don’t take a minute for granted. You should be living each day as if it’s your last.” Listening to her words, he knew what she was referring to. His heart sunk, the usual poised Queen stood in front of him was absolutely broken even if she tried to conceal it. “I miss him so much Jackson, and I miss your Mom too. Each day that goes by, doesn’t get any easier. I need to be strong for Ayah, Louis and Ellie but truth be told- they are so much stronger than I am.”
“Aunt Ri, everything will get better in time. Uncle Liam loved you- as did my Mom. They would both want you to be happy, being the strong woman that you are. Please don’t stay up here on your own. If you need anything, dont hesistate to let anyone know. Whether that’s to watch a film, or to go for a cronut, a walk in the maze? It’s Dad’s birthday party tomorrow night- fifty. The old fart. It would be good to see you there. Ayah is going with Louis, El, Uncle Leo and Aunt Beth.”
“I’ll see how I feel. Thank you for the talk Jackson. You remind me so much of your Mom, caring- thinking about everyone.”
“Shame I look like my Dad then.” Riley laughed as the young man winked at her. “I love you, Aunt Ri.”
*****
Drake woke up the following morning, not really in the mood to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. However he knew that he needed to make the effort. Mainly due to the blood, sweat and guts that Maxwell had put in to organising it. It had been six months since he had said goodbye to his wife and best friend- the King. The traumatic events from that night still haunted him- the grief was still lingering every second of each day that went by. But what was also breaking his heart was how Riley was coping with the loss of her husband and her friend. Ever since the funeral, the Queen had ignored her friends, barely acknowledged their existence- keeping herself to herself.
Making himself look presentable, he headed over to Ramsford with Jackson.

“Speech, speech, speech....” Maxwell shouted, peer pressuring Drake to make a speech. The last speech was the eulogy he spoke at Hana’s funeral. He wasn’t confident when it came to speaking in front of crowds, but he believed the sooner he did it the sooner it would be over and done with.
“Well what can I say? I’m an old man now. I’d like to thank you all for coming today, drinking whiskey in honour of me... you all know me too well. I know it’s been six months, they say that time gets easier but it really doesn’t. I wish that three other people could be here by my side celebrating this milestone with me; my wife Hana, my best friend Liam and our Queen.” Lifting his tumbler of whiskey up into the air, the others followed suit. Drake closed his eyes for a brief second, imagining the happier times with Liam, Riley and Hana- imagining that this was just some awful nightmare that he couldn’t escape or wake up from. But no this was reality. He had lost his best friend and wife to a successful assassination. Opening his eyes, the room was mute- all eyes focusing towards the doorway.
“Brooks?” Riley raised her drink in to the air as she smiled softly towards him. Placing the empty glass on the table next to her, she turned around and headed towards the balcony needing a bit of fresh air. Following her, he just wanted to make sure that she was okay- that she was coping. Even though he knew that she wasn’t. He never imagined that she would turn up, due to her personality recently.
“Hey.” Drake nervously said, as he watched her staring up to the starry sky- her eyes fixated on the brightest one.
“Hey, old man. Happy birthday!”
“Less with the old man cheeky... you’ll be catching up soon...”
“Maybe, but you’ll still be older than me. I got you a present, I wasn’t sure if I was coming or not- it’s too predictable but I’m sure you’ll make use of it.” Handing him the bag, he shook his head whilst laughing. “I’m far too predictable, I’m going to be turning into whiskey with the amount that people have bought me. Thank you, Riley.”
“No need to thank me. Enjoy the rest of your party.”
“Are you leaving?”
“I’m going to mingle with everyone, I’ve not been myself- hiding away from everyone. Seen as though I’ve made the effort, I may as well make the most of it.” Drake smiled at her. Their past was complicated to say the least- but they had put that behind them. But now he felt the need to protect her, something that he didn’t do when they was together- he owed it to himself as well as to Liam.
“It’s good to see you out and about. If you need anything- just let me know.”
“I just need my friends and children. Which I already have. I needed my husband. I still do. I miss him so much.”
“So do I. You’re not alone. I miss Hana, I know you do too. You have myself and Jackson, your children- who aren’t children anymore. You know what I mean. Leo, Beth, the Beaumont’s, Liv.”
*****
Jackson, Ayah, Louis and Ellie all walked towards the balcony- Jackson put his arm in front of them all to prevent them going any further, noticing that his Dad and Aunt was too close.
“And what are you all doing?”
“Aunt Liv! You made us jump.” Ayah said, as she tried to catch her breath.
“Oh hell no.” Leo commented as he joined in spying on Drake and Riley. “Do you think they are going to grieve together and do more?”
“Uncle Leo! That’s our Mom and our Uncle that you’re talking about.”
“Oh kids, they were together well before they married their spouses. They were even due to have a baby until this jerk called Nate beat myself and Riley to a pulp.” Shrugging his shoulders, the young adults looked at other confused as to why this was such a big secret kept from them.
*****
“I know I have you all. I am grateful for that.” Pulling her closer to him, he held her in his embrace. Hearing her whimpers, and feeling the tears drip onto him- his grip became tight. Not in a hurtful way, more of a protective type of way.
“You are an amazing Queen, you are doing a fabulous job.”
“I’m stepping down, Drake. Louis is taking over from me.”
“Louis? Ayah is the Crown Princess. She’s the eldest.”
“History is repeating itself. She abdicated from her duties last week. Louis’s social season begins at the end of the week.”
“You’re putting him through a social season. Jesus Brooks why?”
“He decided it, not me. I didn’t want my children to go through what Liam- What we all went through. I can’t rule without Liam, and I’m not remarrying. Don’t tell anyone that I told you, I’m going to do a statement. I can trust you, right? You’re one of my closest friends.” What we went through. The social season of hell.
“Of course you can trust me.” Cupping her cheeks, he said this with sincerity surrounding his eyes.
“I.. I should go.” Kissing her softly on the cheek, she inhaled sharply. Her heart began to flutter, Drake wasn’t Liam- but having someone this close to her for the first time in months felt unusual. Someone who she loved once upon a time.
“Look after yourself, Brooks. We are all here for you. Always.”
****
Riley did Drake’s usual trick throughout the party- ‘people watching’. She had some conversations with her friends but kept it minimal. The common questions and phrases spoken in these conversations included Liam. Deep down she knew that it was good to talk about him, but for her it was still so raw.
Maxwell bounded up towards her, very intoxicated. “Your majesty. You look absolutely beautiful. I’ve missed you.”
“Thank you. I’ve missed you too. I’m sorry.”
“Blossom, don’t apologise.”
“I have to. I haven’t been myself since I - we lost Liam. And Hana.”
“Come on, lets get out of here for a bit...” Holding his hand out towards her, she remained standing dormant.
“I’m actually going to head to Valtoria.”
“Stay here. You still have a room here. It’s yours...” Pausing for a second, she couldn’t help but smile at the man stood in front of her with the goofy smile. “How is Drake coping?” Maxwell was unsure as to why she asked this.
“Erm, he has a few quiet days. The therapy is helping him though. He blames himself for what happened that night... but you know Drake, he always wears that scowl to cover his true emotions. I know you’ve probably heard this a million times, but Liam and Hana wouldn’t want either of you to be unhappy. A little birdy told me that Louis is beginning a social season. Why didn’t you tell me? I’d have supported you!”
“DRAKE TOLD YOU?” Not realising how loud she was, Drake made his way over to them. Wondering why his name was mentioned. Wondering why Riley’s quiet tone of voice had raised all of a sudden.
“No, Louis did. Drake knew?”
“I knew what? Brooks, are you okay?”
“About Louis becoming King... I assumed you told Max. I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.” The two men pulled her in for a hug, as she eventually broke down uncontrollably crying. “Don’t apologise blossom. For anything.” Maxwell whispered.
“I’m going to go to my room. Thank you for inviting me, both of you.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” After Maxwell asked this, Drake decided to leave the two of them. Before he could escape, Riley grabbed his hand- forcing him to turn to face her.
“Drake?”
“Yeah?”
“Can we talk upstairs? Alone. I have realised that I should talk to someone. Someone who is going through the same emotions... I won’t keep you for too long, it’s your party. I just feel if I don’t do this now, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do it.”
“Of course we can talk. For as long as you need to.” The friends all overheard Riley’s request including her children. All smiling softly, knowing that this was the first step she was taking to get out of the depression. To grieve with some support. To move on from her husbands death but to keep his memory alive. Baby steps.
****
Drake sat down on the edge of the bed as Riley poured him a whiskey.
“Who’d have imagined we’d have been here, in this situation. Didn’t Kiara and Nate put us through enough shit?” Laughing nervously, she wasn’t sure how to begin this difficult conversation.
“But that shit, led us both to begin families with our loved ones. You have to think of it that way..”
“True.” There was an awkward silence due to Riley’s lack of response.
“Why have you been avoiding us all?” Not wanting to sound harsh, but he needed to know. Deep down he had an inkling as to why. He just needed this confirmation, so everybody could help in the best possible way.
“I couldn’t cope. I lost the love of my life unexpectedly. Seeing you all reminded me of him. I’d go to bed, holding my wedding photo- snuggling into Liam’s clothes. It still hasn’t sunk in. I’m so sorry that I’ve ignored you all...”
“We understand, we had just hoped that you would have let us help you. I’ve been the same. If it wasn’t for those morons downstairs, I think I’d have drunk whiskey all day every day to blank the pain.. we both loved Liam and Hana, and they both loved us dearly.” In sync, the two of them briefly closed their eyes- images of their spouses flashing through their mind.
“Louis suggested starting the social season to keep my mind off of things. But it’s just going to bring memories back. Of us. Of everybody.”
“It may be a good thing? We are all going to support you both.” Snuggling close to him, she felt his arm go around her waist. “Why did Ayah abdicate?”
“She’s... she’s... oh god, Drake... this is so embarrassing...”
“What?”
“She’s her father’s double. Insisting that she doesn’t want a political marriage, that she wants to marry for love. Ayah started a relationship with.....” Drake’s brain began functioning. His first thought was his son, Jackson. If it was Jackson, he knew that people would criticise her choice- due to his commoner blood that ran through his veins.
“Who?” He eventually questioned, not quite knowing if he wanted to hear the answer or not.
“Theo...” Riley shrugged her shoulders as his jaw practically hit the floor.
“You’re having me on... aren’t you?”
“No. I wish I was... honestly... I’m hoping it’s just a fling. But you can’t help who you fall in love with.” Looking down towards the floor, she bit her lip as she was referring to him. Referring to their past. Hoping that he wouldn’t realise.
“No you can’t help who you fall in love with..” Pausing, he decided to make a joke out of it. “You know if he hurts her- her Uncle’s won’t hold back. I’m pretty sure Liam’s spirit won’t either.”
“None of you will touch him. I’ll beat you all to it!” Providing that infamous cocky smirk, Drake shook his head- he hadn’t seen it painted on her face in what seemed like an eternity. Caressing her cheek, they both locked eyes.
“Of course you will... it’s good to see you smile.”
“I agree. Thank you. I should let you get back to your party.”
“I’m ready for bed, I can’t hack it anymore. I’m not a spring chicken anymore.” Standing up, he mimicked walking with an invisible walking stick- causing her to throw her head back laughing.
“No, you’re an old grumpy marshmallow now.”
“Queen bossy pants. Night, Brooks.” Turning to leave, it was a brief conversation- a conversation that everyone had wanted to start with all those months ago. Finally she had opened up, even if it wasn’t much. Hoping that this was the first move to gaining closure on Liam’s death.
“Drake, wait!”
“What?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Thank you for the talk.”
“No worries. You know where to find me or any of us for that matter. I love you, Ri.”
“I love you, too.”
****
Once Drake had left, she got under the duvet- making a quick phone call. As soon as the voicemail message began, tears ran down her cheek like a waterfall. Unable to stop.
Hello. You have reached Liam, but I am unavailable at the moment. Sorry for my beautiful wife, my Queen- giggling in the background. If you need me, leave a message and I’ll get back to you soon.
Even though she was crying, she still managed to let out a little laugh- this was his personal phone for his friends, but now it was a regular call she made on a daily basis.
“Hey, handsome. It’s me again. The giggling wife. I’ve actually laughed for the first time today, Drake the old man turned fifty. Of course he was drinking whiskey. I know I say this everytime I ring you, but I miss you so fucking much Li. I love you so much. My biggest regret was not telling you that the day you left us. So I’m making up for it now. Now it's too late to hold you 'Cause you've flown away. But that doesn’t stop my imagination from believing that you are here. Never had I imagined living without your smile, and I know you're shining down on me from heaven. I hope you and Hana are celebrating up there. I know eventually we'll be together. One sweet day. Until we meet again. I love you, my King.”

All characters belong to pixelberry.  Oh and just in case since i’m a newbie here, Riley’s food item is Doritos, and of course i’m not the owner of Doritos.
Summary: TRH land with Riley pregnant.  Liam goes to the store to get her pregnancy craving food.
Warnings: the usual profanity. I just love me some F-bomb guys, i need to do better.
Tumblr media
”What the Frick are Apple Crisps Liam?!?!?!?”
But.... she didn’t say frick.  She dropped the F bomb in the middle of court angered after her adorable husband tried to get a food for her that she was craving and failed miserably at it.  We’re getting ahead of ourselves.  We’ll circle back to that.
Riley and Liam sit on the Dais on their matching thrones overseeing the event.   Liam reaches over touching her stomach, with a sweet smile of pride on his face.  Riley puts her hand on top of his smiling back.  It was the perfect time in that moment for the baby to kick, which little one did.   They were a little more than 4 months along now, and Riley was beginning to finally have a decent sized baby bump.
“Love you.”
“Love you more,” he responds back.
Riley puts a hand up to her mouth to politely hide her yawn. She gently rubbed her stomach for a while glancing around the room.
“Oh my god…”
“What is it Hana? Drake started to panic looking around.
“Look at Riley!”
“Is she…..”
“She can’t be… “ Maxwell looked shocked.
“She’s asleep.” Drake says laughing.  Olivia joins in.
They watch Riley; her arm that was resting on her stomach slides down limply beside her. Her head rolling to the side.
Someone screams.  Riley doesn’t even flinch.
“Queen Riley has fainted!!!!”
Liam hears jumping up in horror to glance into Riley’s face.  Her eyes are closed, head resting on the side of the throne.
“Riley?  Oh god Riley!!”
He shakes her.
Riley startled awake screams, “DORITOS!!!”
“Oh my god tell me you got that.?!?!?!”
“Yep, this is better than Maxwell’s lady screams when Riley drove home that day.”
“How could you fall asleep Riley?!?!?!?!?!?”  Liam said in a forced whisper pulling Riley up from the throne.
Liam turns to quiet the crowd that is in a panic thinking that something terrible has happened to Queen Riley.
“I assure you all Queen Riley is just fine.  She needs a little break from the festivities because of her condition.  We will return shortly.”  Liam smiled apologetically as he addressed the crowd.
He pulls Riley into one of the back rooms.
Their friends meet them in the back room away from everyone else.
“Did she fall asleep?” They laughed.
Riley’s eyes welled with tears.  “It’s the baby.  The baby is a night owl like me.  Moves all night, and I can’t sleep.  I’m so exhausted.”
She sits down in a chair.  “All I want is a bag of Doritos and a root beer is that too much to ask?”  Riley is now sobbing.  “Can I just have some Doritos please?”
“Wow, they aren’t kidding about pregnant women being emotional.”
“I will get your Doritos,” Liam sounds unsure. “Just what is a Dorito?”
“How do you not know what Doritos are?  They’re great.” Drake said.
“Right!!! See Drake gets me.”
Drake winked at Riley.
“I’ll go get them,” Liam said heading out the door.
Liam returns shortly with a bag, looking like the hero.
Tumblr media
“Here you go.”
She squealed in delight, giving Liam a kiss to his lips which he quickly returned.    She reached into the paper bag, pulling out the snack bag.  The huge smile on her face fades.
She looks at the bag and rolls her eyes.
“What the fuck are Apple Crisps Liam?!?!?!?  Why the hell is your face on the bag eating one?”
“Salty, sweet treats that bring out the King in you.” Drake, Oliva, Maxwell say in unison.
“We don’t have Doritos; the clerk swore they were the next best thing.  My father loved Apple Crisps, hence why the King is the spokesperson for them.”
Tumblr media
“You people and your damn apples, I’m so over it!!!!”
They all collectively gasp.
“YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!!!!!!” Maxwell screams.
“NO.”
The next afternoon Drake comes over with a delivery box.
“Got you a present Brooks, are you ok?”
“I can’t keep anything down, breakfast and lunch snacks nothing.”
“Maybe these will help.”
She opens the box.  There are about 10 bags of Doritos inside.
She gives Drake a huge hug.  “Thanks Drake, I love you!!!!” She immediately regretted saying those words.
“I love you too.” He whispers softly his eyes lingering on hers. She quickly broke his gaze.
“Drake don’t…”
“I knew that he’d mess it up.”
“Drake!”
“I had already ordered them online on my phone before he left.”
Drake, he’s your best friend.”
“Is he though?”
“Anyway, I’m going to head out.  I hope these make you happy, because that’s all I ever want to do you know, is make you happy.  Eat one.”
She opens the bag inhaling the cheesy scent.
She eats one, moaning in delight.  Drake couldn’t help but watch as she licked her lips.  ”Yassssssss!!!! So good!”
She proceeds to eat nothing but Doritos and drink caffeine free root beer for the rest of the day.
Riley wakes up the next morning expecting morning sickness but she doesn’t have any.
“Whaaaaat?????”
Tumblr media
“How many Doritos did you eat today, Love?”
“Millions of billions…. Drake’s ordering another case.”
“Riley are you going to eat real food today?”
“Depends, if I get any morning sickness eating these? So far I haven’t.”
The whole day she eats Doritos and Root beer with no signs of morning sickness.
****Dinner Time****
Liam is reeling in anger as Riley brings a bag of Doritos to the table with her. “NO, you WILL eat actual food. That’s my baby in there too Riley.”
Dinner looked wonderful.  Grilled chicken, asparagus and potatoes, and did taste good.  Not even 15 minutes later she was in the bathroom vomiting.
Liam waited patiently outside the bathroom door.
“What’s that look?”
Tumblr media
“Other than I told you so?”
“This baby is a girl Liam.”
“How do you know?”
“She’s a mini-me. She likes staying up late, and loves junk food, just like her mama.”
“I always wanted a little princess that is just like her mama.” He kisses her cheek rubbing her stomach affectionately.

**********
Hey guys, myself and Evie aren’t returning to the apartment.
We are going to a hotel, I am spoiling my fiancée. D x
That night that Drake had proposed to Evie in Paris, still felt like a fantasy. Even if it did take two attempts for her to accept the proposal, he couldn’t help but feel blessed. Every morning since returning to Cordonia, he woke up feeling anxious- paranoid, that she could leave him at any minute. Deep down, he believed that she was far too good for him. Not quite believing that she could love him back as more than a friend- especially when she had the opportunity to marry Liam from such a young age.
This morning he woke up alone for the first time in weeks. Today was their wedding day. He had spend decades of loving her in secret, today was the day that he was officially making her his. And much to his disgust, the day that he became a Duke. Even though he had grown up around nobility, he had hoped that he would make Evie proud- not fail her as a Duke. Support her as best as he could do.
Walking down the aisle with Liam, his best man- the guests greeted them as they made their way up towards Leo who was officiating the upcoming nuptials.
“What’s up with you? I have never seen you this nervous before.” Continuously taking deep breaths, he couldn’t prevent the shaking.
“Li, it’s just....You know Evie....She always runs away. I mean, I had to ask her twice to become my wife. What if she just thinks ‘fuck this’.. would you blame her? All the shit we have been through. The miscarriage. My mom. Myself getting shot again- because you’re a fucking dumbass.”
“And you’re the fucking dumbass hero all the time. When Olivia rings, I am going to go and collect your bride- and if I have to drag her down the aisle I will do.”
“You’re my best man! Why are you walking her down the aisle?”
“Maxwell was driving her crazy.” I can imagine. “I can still do my best man duties, soon to be Duke Walker.”
****
Liam made his way to the room that Evie was getting ready in, Olivia winked at him as he walked in.
“For today, only- I give you the most beautiful Duchess in Cordonia, your Majesty.”
“What if one day isn’t long enough, Duchess Olivia?”
“Don’t push it, Evie. I’ll give you both two minutes.” Liam nodded, as Olivia exited the room.
“You look breathtaking, Evie.” Finally turning around to face him, he noticed tears trickle down her face. “Why are you crying?”
“Olivia is going to kill me if I smudge my make up. I never thought that this day was coming.” Knowing exactly what she was referring to, he caressed her cheeks- smiling softly towards her.
“Your fiancé or should I say soon to be husband, is a strong man Evangeline. He wouldn’t leave you again, he fought hard. He’s shaking like... what do they say? A shitting dog. He’s worried that you are going to runaway, he adores you so much.”
“There’s still time to do that, right?” Liam was attempting to study her face, not quite knowing if she was winding him up or not. “I’m joking Liam. Are we okay?”
“Of course we are, why wouldn’t we be?”
“Oh, because. You know....You’re walking the bride down the aisle, the bride that was supposed to be yours once upon a time.”
“Oh, Evie. I’m honoured to be walking you down the aisle. You’re my best friend. We’d have never worked out anyway. Come on, let’s make this a better wedding than mine. Let’s turn Drake into a Duke and you’ll become Duchess Evangeline Walker- Mrs Drake Walker.”
****
Evie didn’t know how tightly she was holding onto Liam, the nerves had gotten the best of her. It’s Drake. My Drake. I’ve found the love of my life and my closest, truest friend. Reaching closer and closer towards Drake, she could tell how nervous he was. His hands were physically shaking. Liam kissed her on the cheek, I love you, Evangeline. Look after him for God’s sake! Evie let out a nervous laugh, before reaching for her fiancés clammy hand.
“Evie, you look beautiful. You’re always beautiful... I mean... fuck. I love you, Lina.”
“You look handsome, Mr Walker. You’re always handsome to me though. I love you, Drake.”
****
During the reception, Drake never wanted to leave Evie’s side. He was in awe with his best friend, his now wife. After much ‘peer pressure’ from their friends, especially Maxwell- Drake wrapped his arms around Evie’s waist in the middle of the room before beginning a speech. He didn’t want to. He didn’t know exactly what to say. He wasn’t sure what people were expecting from him. Maybe some slurred garbage with the amount of whiskey that he had consumed.
“The hardest part was admitting my true feelings after years of wishing that you was mine. Everybody else knew, I just regret not telling you before I eventually did. I’m a little drunk, extremely happy, and so in love. Life couldn’t get any better. Until my beautiful wife, gives us another blessing, hopefully. We’ve been through enough surely? We deserve happiness. I’m going to shut up boring you all. But thank you all for coming. Evangeline Grace Walker, I love you so much. My, Lina.” Picking her up -unexpectedly, he held onto her tightly. Never wanting to let her go.
“I love you too so much! My husband.”
“Put her down Walker! Wait for the wedding night! Oh by the way, I do believe that I deserved some recognition in your poor drunken speech. If it wasn’t for me, she wouldn’t be back and you wouldn’t be so crazy in love.”
“Thank you Duchess Olivia, for being an interfering bitch!” The Duchess perked her eyebrows up towards him, whilst fumbling in her bag. Showing him the contents of her bag, he gulped knowing that he had to be grateful towards her before she potentially stabbed him. “Your interference worked out well this time. Thank you, Liv. I appreciate you for bringing Evie back into my life, into all of our lives.”
“No problem- DUKE Walker. May I steal my best friend for a moment? I’m sure Maxwell could entertain you instead?”
Drake met Maxwell at the bar, he felt as if he was floating on cloud nine. With a whiskey in his hand, his eyes were still focused towards Evie and every movement she made. Needing to make sure that she was safe from harm, after the disastrous Royal Wedding.
“I can’t believe that you are married!”
“Neither can I.” Blushing, Maxwell pulled him in for an over dramatic bromance hug.
“I love wedding receptions. Nothing beats free booze.” He said to his friend, as he slowly sipped the brown liquid.
“Erm, Drake....”
“What, Max?”
“The booze isn’t free. You and Evie paid for it remember... you put a ton of money behind the bar, Evie’s idea. I mean it’s free for us, but not for you two...so cheers Drakey!”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Maxwell’s eyes widened as Drake climbed over the bar- scrutinising for the money. Panicking, Maxwell backed away- needing to find Evie, hoping that she would distract him. Somehow.
****
Fuck
Drake woke up in a sweat. Looking around, they were in the Parisian hotel room. The place that Drake had escorted her towards after his second proposal. The successful one. Sitting up, he couldn’t wait to marry the love of his life. However, he was horrified with the possibility that he may have to contribute to the bars float. It was just a dream. He wasn’t a tight bastard, or maybe he was? But their mutual friends were all nobles- surely they could afford their own drinks? Calculating the number of guests in his mind, he was then attempting to work out how many drinks the guests would each have. Maxwell and Adelaide would be the biggest burdens if there was a free bar, taking advantage. At least Brooks is pregnant- that’s one less person, he thought to himself.
“Drake?” Evie stirred, wondering what he was doing. “Are you okay?” She asked softly, as she attempted to wake up properly.
“Yeah...” Laying back down, he pulled her into his embrace and held her lovingly.
“Evie? You know when we get married...”
“Yeah?”
“Do we have to pay for the booze? For everyone?”
“Of course we do, Drake! You can’t be a sponger all of your life. It’s that or the wedding will be alcohol free....”
Drake’s eyes widened, realisation that there would be no whiskey or any alcohol for that matter if he refused to pay upfront. “Or we could pay, then send Maxwell or someone around with a bucket and if anyone is willing to pay a donation they can do. Besides, what’s a bit of money for alcohol- people will buy us wedding gifts. It’s the least we can do.” Snuggling into his chest, she loved seeing the horror written across his face. Trying not to laugh, she knew exactly who was paying for her wedding, and for the drinks of course. They remained in silence for a while, content in each other’s company.
“Did you love my parents Drake?” That was random. He thought to himself. Why is she asking that?
“Yes. Of course I did, they did everything they could for myself and Sav. They took us in when they didn’t need to. They were the most amazing people, that I’ve ever known. I am thankful for everything that they did for me, for us.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
“When they died, they left me an envelope... You can thank them for paying for our wedding, including the drinks. I love you, Drake.”

This is the 4th Chapter of  The Life of Riley
Riley’s origin story.
Catch up on the story so far if you need to  HERE.

Look at our parents!!!!  They have a little age on them now.  Not the babies they once were!!!!!
Ren walked into the house to meet a smiling Jason.  After he kissed her cheek, he gave a little kiss to her growing stomach.
“Hey little guy,” he said affectionately to her stomach.
“You’re home so early today, I wasn't expecting you to beat me home.  What’s the special occasion?”
“Because I have a surprise for you two actually.”
Jason held up a key with a seashell on it.  “We’re celebrating my promotion to Corporal, by spending the weekend at a beach house.”  Jason pauses for dramatic effect… “In the Hamptons!!!”
Ren gasped.  “Stop joking!  You got a promotion and we’re going to the Hamptons?!?!?!?!?”
“Hell yes!!!  Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are in the high class now!!!”
“High class people don’t say Hell.  It’s the underbelly of the Earth that is unbearably heated.” Ren said in her most sophisticated voice she could muster.
Jason snorted from laughter, causing Ren to burst out in a fit of giggles.  “We’re gonna embarrass the hell out of ourselves up there, and I don’t give a damn.”
“Neither do i, and it’s not like we’ll ever see them again anyway, so we mine as well give them a show.”
He swatted Ren on her behind.  “Hurry up and pack a bag.  Pack lightly.”
“Do we really know any other way?”
Packing lightly is something they both knew all too well from their days of being in the foster care system.  They never had much stuff at all in those days.  And even if they did, a lot of the times they would have to pack and leave things behind, because of the next location they were going to.  Ren remembered at one time in her life, everything she thought that was “Important”  could fit in a small school  backpack.
Even living in their home they did not have wall to wall things.  They took a more minimalist standpoint to decorate their. home.  There was  one place though that was cluttered with new  things right now.  The baby’s room.
She packed her bag and was ready to go within 25 minutes.  She thought she did really well, until she came downstairs to find Jason waiting on her.
“What took you so long?”  He said with a smirk, then a sweet smile.  “You’re slipping Renny B.”
“Well if you had a tiny human either jumping on your bladder like it’s a trampoline  you pee or feel like you’re gonna pee every 10 minutes, you’d be slow too.”
He grabbed her bag, putting it on the back seat.  “Lucky, come!”
Jas opened the door for Ren letting her get in the car first, then secured Lucky in her kennel in the back seat.  And they were on the road.
Jason underestimated  how long it was going to take them to get there, because of Ren’s need to frequently stop.  It was perfectly ok though, Lucky needed to walk too, and this is what they would be doing when the baby made it here too.
Ren had dozed off during the ride.  He glanced at her smiling. He glanced in the rear view mirror,  Lucky was sleeping in her kennel.  Good grief these girls.  As soon as the car started moving both were horrible road trip companions.

He focused on the music playing on the radio continuing the drive.
They stopped by the grocery store to get some food, because there was no way they were eating out anywhere around there spending eight million dollars for a piece of toast and a slice of bacon.
He pulled into the driveway.
“Oh my goodness is this where we are staying for real?”
It was a beautiful two story beach house that was painted a sea foam green and white.  Colors you could only get away with living at the beach.  It had an adorable porch swing.  Leading down to the private beach access there was a cobblestone path.  The smell of the ocean and sea salt filled their noses.
They grilled steaks for dinner.  Well Jason grilled,  Ren lounged on the porch swing taking in the warm air and beautiful scenery.
Once all their bellies were full and content,  Jason took his family down to walk along the beach.  Life was just perfect.  Jason couldn’t get any happier than he was right that second, his arm wrapped around Lauren, his other hand on Lucky’s leash giving her some slack to run and play in the water a little or sniff around and the unfamiliar scents. They sat in the sand to watch the sunset.
Tumblr media
After their long walk on the beach they sat on the porch just taking in the early night.  They sat on the porch swing together.  Jason pulled Lauren into his arms and gently caressed her growing stomach.
“I love you Ren.”
“I love you too Jason.”
By Sunday evening they both were so relaxed and into a routine there at the beach they didn’t want to leave.
“Maybe we can look into getting a timeshare or something up here.  I would love to have a place up here that we could come and bring our little boy back to play here and enjoy it.  What do you think?”
“Let’s look into it and see what we can find out.”
They packed up the car.  Ren was much better company for Jason on the way back.  They turned up the radio singing along to it to some of their favorite songs.  Lucky howled with them from the back seat.  They laughed, and sang and enjoyed each other’s company.
“Home sweet home!”  Jason said when they pulled up to their house.
“Just as great as the Hamptons, but without the private beach,  the beach in general, the beautiful everything.  I’m just messing with you, it’s pretty great.”
“At least, it’s not our first apartment.”
“You mean our first closet together?”
“It was cozy Jason.  Shows us if we could survive living there in such close quarters, we were really meant to be you know?”
“I really like the way you look at things Renny B. You always try to look for the bright side.  Until you, I never had anyone in my life that did that.  Makes me a better man when I look at the world through your eyes.”
Could she ever be more in love with this man that she already was.  And then he ups the ante.
The next day, she met Mom for lunch.  Mom gave her a huge hug and rubbed her stomach.
“How’s my grandbaby?”
“Keeping me up half the night with heartburn, and I still have the worst morning sickness most days, but other than that, it’s peaches and cream.”
“How’s Jason doing?”
“He loves it mom. He’s going to be an amazing father. He already is a great husband.  Even when I'm having a crappy day, he just pitches right in to help.  I’ve missed work a few times,  he comes home and checks on me. I don’t know what I did to deserve him Mom, he’s such a good man.”
“You deserve him because you are a good person Ren.  He’s a good person.  He protected you when you needed it.  He will always be there for you.”
“Mom were you nervous all the time when you were pregnant, that you’d do something wrong or something was going to happen?”
“Yes it’s natural, are you eating right? Enough?  Getting enough sleep, drinking enough water?  Yes child, it’s perfectly natural to worry.”
Ren teared up.  “It’s crippling at times.  I’m afraid to get out of bed some days.  I just feel like something bad is going to happen.”
Tumblr media
“Something like what Ren?”
“I don’t know Mom, just something.  I’m so nervous, and I know I need to calm down.  My blood pressure was up at my last appointment.”
“Calm down dear then, and stop with that salt.”
She smacked the salt shaker out of Ren’s hand as she was salting her fries.
She chuckled at Mom.  “But I love fries with my salt.”
“Can’t tell me otherwise, you are really my child.”
Both laughed.
Mom took her hand across the table and squeezed it.  “Stop worrying so much sweetheart.  Everything will be fine.”
“Yes Mom.”
Back at work the feeling was still there as it always was, but she pushed it to the back of her brain she had to focus on work.
It was not the best day.
The hurricane had caused wide streamed panic, and flooding and people could simply barely get around.  Ren was having to cover for two nurses who called out due to the weather, and Ren would probably not be relieved when her shift was supposed to be over so she would have to probably stay and work a double shift due to the inclement weather policy at the hospital.
She sent a quick text to Jason.  He promised that he would get her out of the hospital when her shift was over if he had to arrest her himself.  The mugshot would be worth it she thought.
The day was not getting better.  One of her small little patients threw up on her.  Of course being pregnant her heightened sense of smell almost made her vomit too.
She had to get the loner scrubs, however none were maternity so she just had to get a really large top so it would fit over her stomach.  The huber needle she needed was not in the supply closet on her floor so she had to go to get it.  Because who knows where the CNA’s were right now.  Everything was a cluster at the hospital right now due to the weather. She couldn’t even remember if she’d eaten today or not.
She grabbed a granola bar from the snack stash at the nurses station as she waited for the elevator.
After a minute she hit the elevator button again, annoyed.  “Good grief,” she said heading for the stairs.  It was only two flights to where she needed to go.  She started down the stairs.  She was half way when a sudden nausea spell hit her.  “Oh no not now little man,” she said covering her mouth picking up the pace.  She had only made it 3 more steps when she felt her ankle roll.  She tried to grab the stair rail for support to catch her, but her fingers slipped.
“No no no no no no no!!!” Ren screamed as she fell down the flight of stairs grabbing her stomach. Her world faded to black.
Jason was getting ready to head over to make sure Lauren would be able to leave when dispatch came over running to him.
“We have to get you to Presbyterian fast Brooks. It's an emergency.’
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s Ren.  She needs you.”
The something bad Ren had been fearing the whole time.... had finally happened.

“What do you want Brooks?” Not meaning to sound rude towards Riley- he was just eager to spend time with Evie after everything that happened between the two of them.
“Can we talk. That’s all I want to do.”
“Five minutes okay? Walk with me to my room, I’m actually due to be somewhere.”
“Does this have anything to do with Evie?”
“That’s none of your business...” Drake snapped at Riley, usually he wouldn’t be this harsh towards the woman who he instantly fell in love with. After she led him on during the engagement tour, he still held that torch hoping that she would choose him. He was grateful that all they did was kiss, as this was hard enough getting over the heartbreak.
“I’ll always love you Drake, I just want closure...”
*****
“Liam! What the fuck! Get out of here! Now!” Picking the duvet back up, she wrapped it immediately around her once again.
“Riley knows.”
“Riley knows what exactly?”
“I suggested that we both have a one night stand, a last hurrah before the wedding.”
“Good for you, but you aren’t having it with me! So goodbye Liam...”
“Evangeline... please hear me out...”
“No liam. You can hate me for what I’m about to say but I honestly don’t care.... the only reason we lost our virginities to each other was because we were drunk... at the time we believed that we were being forced to marry.... I never loved you in that way, you was more like my best friend- a brother. You’ve always known this. I’m not being your mistress, Riley needs you...”
“She knows though... I’ve always loved you because you was my first love- you will always be in my heart... it’s hard you being back. I love Riley, I do. But I also have love for you.” Rolling her eyes back, she didn’t know what to say- no matter how many times she would turn him down he would still be there.
“I slept with Drake.”
“What?”
“I slept with Drake, it’s not hard to understand Liam. You have to let whatever feelings you have towards me go- Riley needs you now more than ever. Please don’t ruin our friendship.”
“I’d say I’m happy for you both... Drake is probably with Riley now...he does love her after all...”
“No he’s gone to his to get his things, to stay with me.”
“What things does he need exactly? He could go when he woke up.” Evie didn’t think of it that way, now feeling paranoid and jealous that he was with Riley- she had no right to feel this way, they were only friends who had slept together.
“Evie?” Liam spoke softly, as he noticed her defensive yet confident facial expression fade.
“Can you leave? Please Liam.”
*****
Liam eventually left Evie, not getting anything from her apart from a hug. Even though she wasn’t in a relationship with Drake, she still felt as if she would be cheating on him. The typical Cordonian marriage arrangement was something that she never believed in even at a young age- so she definitely wasn’t going become a hypocrite giving in to her belief. Drake had now been gone for over half an hour, Liam’s words were stuck in her head- Drake is probably with Riley now...he does love her after all..
Her usual neatly trimmed nails, were now practically non-existent, as she paced the room. Wondering if Drake would come back as he promised.
“Hey beautiful...” Evie was conflicted with how to react to him to actually showing up-noticing the lipstick mark on his cheek, inhaling Riley’s vanilla scent and seeing him all flustered- all she wanted to do was believe that what happened between the two of them was a dream.
“Hey, what took you so long?” Drake noticed that she seemed a bit tense, guarded.
“Maxwell was asking questions, you know that he’s practically the court ‘gossip girl’.”
“I see.” I wonder if max likes to wear perfume and lipstick now. “Evie? Are you okay?”
“Yes.” No. “I’m just tired. I’m going to go to sleep. Are you staying or going awol again?” She asked in an obnoxious tone of voice.
“I promised that I’d stay the night... with you.” Evie just nodded, not wanting to stay awake as it could possibly cause an argument. Sliding under the cover, she rolled over on her side- not facing him. Drakes mind was wandering, wondering if Evie has an inkling about his meeting with Riley and that was why she was providing him with a cold reception.
“Evie?” Stroking her arm, she didn’t respond- softly breathing he soon realised that she was asleep. Wrapping his arm around her body, he pulled her flush to him- kissing her on the shoulder, he let it linger there before taking a deep breath.
“I don’t know if you can hear me or not, but I need you to know something... I’ve never felt this way before about anyone. Tonight you made me feel alive, finally thinking that I had a future with someone. Riley who? All those one night stands who? What we did is something I only ever thought would be a dream..please don’t shut me out. I think I’m falling in love with you Evangeline.”
******
I’m sorry, this wasn’t meant to be- we are friends. I can’t do this Drake, not whilst you’re still clearly in love with Riley. E x
For the last week, Drake had tried to rattle his brain around wondering why she would assume that he was still in love with Riley. There was no obvious affection towards Riley from his end, and she informed him that she just wanted to be friends. But Evie never gave him the chance to explain, instead she was gone in a flash when he woke up the morning after Vegas. Standing in the corner of the ballroom with Liam and Maxwell, Drake scrutinised the room hoping that Evie would attend. “Has anyone heard from Evie or Olivia?” Maxwell asked Liam concerned.
“Bastien said Olivia had things to attend to up in Lythikos. Hence why he’s acting all miserable. No one has heard from Evie as far as I’m aware.” Before anyone could respond, the doors opened.
Duchess Olivia Nevrakis and Duchess Evangeline Bruley
Of course Olivia knew where she was, Drake thought to himself- he wasn’t sure whether to be angry towards her or respect her for respecting her closest friends wishes. Gulping the remainder of the whiskey- he needed some Dutch courage. Ambling towards the two women, he bowed before giving them both a kiss on the cheek. Focusing his gaze towards Evie their looks towards each other provided a silent argument, Olivia excused herself- not wanting to be involved in the awkward situation.
“Your grace. I think you and I need some words....” Evie knew this day was coming, and so did Olivia. Ever since running away from Vegas leaving him in the hotel room- she regretted not talking to him like adults.
Frantically knocking on the door, Evie had hoped that her friend would be awake. Looking like she had been dragged through a hedge backwards- she didn’t care.
“Evie? Do you know what time it is?”
“Yes. I’m sorry. I’ve got a flight to catch... but I was just wondering....”
“Hold on a sec... you’re coming back with us right? So why are you catching a flight?”
“I fucked up. I slept with Drake. But I think he slept with Riley, he smelt of her and was wearing her lipstick. Liam came to my room asking to sleep with me. I’ve let myself go. I’m such an idiot. I need time alone. Can I stay at your Duchy? Please Liv.”
“You slept with Drake?” Bastien asked, interrupting the two girls conversation. Drake was like a son to him, and Drake confessed to him his true feelings. The guard didn’t want her to break Drakes heart, but he could predict that their relationship was always going to be difficult- this just proving it.
“Of course she did. You have a Duchy of your own if you haven’t forgotten? Just go home Evie.”
“I can’t. Everyone will know where I am. I need time away from them all. Please Liv. We’re best friends.”
“And I suppose I have to lie for you too?” Quirking her eyebrow, she knew that this was a rhetorical question not requiring an answer. Looking at Bastien the pair agreed to lie for her, but if questions were thrown at them constantly they didn’t know how longer they could keep her whereabouts hidden.
Just wishing that the ground could suffocate her- swallow her whole, as her heart began to hammer looking at him. Feeling guilty for leaving him alone, she was surprised that he could even look at her.
“You talk about me going awol... where have you been your grace? I think I’m owed some type of explanation.”
“This isn’t all about you Drake. I left you a note.”
“A shitty little note Evie! What the fuck... I’m not in love with Riley. Why couldn’t you just fucking talk to me? Why did you just fuck off and leave me? At least Riley never did that to me...” Turning around she didn’t want him to see her cry, she knew he said that out of spite but it still hurt.
“Because that’s what I do best Drake. I run away to boarding school, I come back. I run away to university, I come back. I ran away, and I came back. And I’m going to do it again.”
“Why did you turn Liam down in Vegas?”
“How do you know about that?”
“Men talk. Riley came to warn me about what he was planning.”
“Of course she did! And I’m thrilled that I’m court gossip, you all make me sick.” Thinking back to the reasoning behind her parents death- the trigger point was being court gossip for years.
“She wanted me to fuck her...”
“Go and do it, don’t ever talk to me again. Any of you. Or better so whisper behind my back as you’ve already been doing....” Wiping her tears, she walked away from the situation; not wanting to cause anymore trouble. Drake hesitated as first, wondering what the best move to make was; to follow her, or to just remain pining after her.
She wanted me to fuck her but I said no because I wanted to be with you.
“Leave her. Don’t make the situation worse.” Olivia placed a comforting hand on his shoulder much to his surprise. Scrutinising her, he wondered when the infamous dagger was going to make an appearance.
“Why are you being nice?”
“Because you two morons are obviously falling in love with each other. I know she didn’t sleep with Liam, and I know that you didn’t sleep with Riley. However I do know that you returned to Evie’s room with a lipstick mark and was smelling all like Riley. Evie has got trust issues, you wouldn’t know about the reasoning why but she only gives her heart away to men who she truly believes she likes. One man messed that up for her, so when you returned late her natural instinct thought you’d hurt her too.”
“I’d never hurt her Liv.”
“Maybe not, but with your track record of never being in a long term relationship, and having feelings for your best friends girl, past or not- she is going to be feeling this way. I always knew you liked Evie, your confession to Bastien just confirmed it.”
“What do I do? She won’t even listen to me, she’s so stubborn and frustrating and....”
“And Mr Walker is in love, and asking me for advise? Just both of you chill out for a while. When Riley begins the lantern send off, maybe try and talk to her then.”
******
Everyone gathered around, listening to the new Duchess and soon to be Queen give a speech regarding her Duchy, people and the festival. Evie joined Olivia, apologising for her absence.
People of Valtoria it is my great honor to be here with you tonight...
“What are you going to do with your lantern Duchess Evangeline.” Olivia whispered as Riley continued her speech.
“Same as you Duchess Olivia, spark it up then disappear. Do what I do best.” She smiled at her best friend.
“You know what I mean.. what are you letting go of and what do you wish for?”
“I’m letting go of Cordonia, and I wish to not have some bullshit story from you dragging me back.” Drake overheard what she said, shaking his head at Olivia he stormed off with Liam and the men following him.
“Oh I’d have thought that you’d be letting go of this stubbornness and wishing to be happy - with someone like Drake.”
“What happened in Vegas was a mistake.” A fantastic mistake, I can’t have my heart broken though.
“Of course it was, you’re both just pushing each other away. Wake up Evie, what you’ve both been looking for has been here the whole time.”
“Hey, is everything okay?” Riley joined the two of them, already predicting the awkwardness- she decided now was the right time to confess to Evie what happened in Vegas- adding more fuel to the fire.
“Yes.” They both snapped in unison.
“Riley I’d like to thank you for inviting me but I have to leave. I hope the festival is successful.”
“Evie don’t go, I’d like to talk to you.”
“That’s not necessary, just ring me or something.”
“Please Evie...” Biting her lip, considering her options- she knew she couldn’t refuse the future Queen. Sooner I talk to her, sooner I can leave.
****
“So I spoke to Drake in Vegas...”
“I’ll always love you Drake, I just want closure...”
“If that’s all you have to say Brooks, you could have text me that. The feelings you apparently had towards me was probably because Liam couldn’t be there for you. I understand that now Ri, I’m happy for you both.” Continuing to walk forward towards his room, he wasn’t up for a debate.
“You look at her like you looked at me. Do you love her Drake?” Gulping, he knew it could possibly hurt her with their history- but it was only fair.
“Riley, I care for Evie a lot. I always have done. Before you and Hana were in the picture we were all close, you thought Olivia was bad- you should have seen team Elivia.” Both of them laughing, Riley had wished that she had known them all in the past.
“Drake, if you love her you need to tell her. Liam... he...” Pausing she didn’t want to cause an argument or a fight between the two men, but she respected Drake as a friend and believed he deserved the truth.
“What?”
“Liam suggested us having a one night stand with the two of you. I don’t want that, and I know that neither of you do. You need to go back to Evie, you are a good man marshmallow- you deserve to be happy.” Standing on her tiptoes, she kissed him on the cheek- and gave him a longing hug. Drake smiled at her as she left, not knowing what to think about Liam’s actions. Urgently running to his room, he couldn’t get out as quickly as he wanted to- Maxwell was persistent asking questions about his friends new sex life.
“He loves you Evie, I see the way he looks at you, as everyone does - he used to look at me like that, but not as adoring.”
“No offence Riley, but you and I are completely different. I don’t want to be heartbroken, I’m not known as the court whore unlike you. I’m best off staying single and keeping my friendships as they have been since we were younger.” Evie took a deep breath regretting referring Riley as the court whore, noticing Tariq and Neville with some strangers she began to panic. “I’m sorry Riley. I didn’t mean that. Why is Tariq and Neville here... and who are they?”
“I ... I don’t know. Going back on to Drake, he loves you but he won’t admit it. All I did was hug him and kiss him on the cheek. That was it Evie, I hope you believe me.”
“Get out of here now, go and find Liam and Bastien.” Is she even listening to me? Tariq and Neville aren’t issues.
“This is my Duchy! I’m not going anywhere.” Fucking hell Riley, maybe you and I are similar- both stubborn. Discretely sending a text to Liam, she hoped he would read it as soon as possible.
SOS TARIQ AND NEVILLE AND UNKNOWN PEOPLE ARE HERE- BRING THE GUARDS OUTSIDE ASAP
“Please Riley, I don’t trust either of them and whoever they are with....”
“Duchess Riley, Duchess Evangeline.”
“Hello gentlemen, I believe that you haven’t been invited to this event.” Tariq pulled Riley into his embrace, with a tight grip- seeing her struggle, Evie pulled him away from her. Fluttering her eyelashes at the man, she provided a fake smile- knowing that he probably could see straight through her but it was worth a risk.
“Tariq why don’t you let Riley go back to the festival, you and I can have a walk with Neville. I’m sure she needs to mingle as the host of tonight’s event.” Tariq gathered the men together, whilst whispering- smirking at the two duchesses.
“What are you doing?”
“Saving your fucking ass. And my country’s heir! Go to Liam now!”
“Like old times then Evie.” Evie grimaced as Tariq placed a longing kiss on her cheek, whilst wrapping his arms around her waist.
“Don’t fucking push it Tariq! A walk doesn’t mean sex... or rape in your case.”
“It doesn’t have to be that way Evie, we were all close back in the day. I mean you are the only woman that has rejected Liam, so you must have feelings for someone else- that could be me.”
“That is because I love him as a friend.”
“Like you both love Drake Walker too? That disgusting commoner.” Neville interrupted, scowling at Evie and Riley.
“They are both better men then you two will ever be.” Riley snapped, defending Drake- as well them both.
“What the fuck are you still doing here? You are due to be Queen- you have to mingle and look after yourself... I can handle this. I’m just a Duchess.”
“No Evie.” Before Riley could move or react, Neville pushed her towards the two strangers. Fucking hell, do I talk to a brick wall? Evie muttered to herself.
“Get the fuck off her!” Evie ran straight into Neville knocking him to the floor, using techniques that the Nevrakis’s taught her and Olivia as young girls- before pushing Riley out of the way. “Get help Riley! Or so help me I’ll kill you myself.”
*****
Bastien carried Evie into the ballroom, laying her down gently on the couch. Insisting that someone could see to her injuries whilst he and the other guards searched for Tariq, Neville and the men. Olivia noticed her best friend in a fragile way- before seeing to her she ushered all the nobles out of the room. “The festival is over for tonight, I’m sure Duchess Riley will thank you all for attending at a later date.”
“What the fuck happened Riley? Evie?”
“Those arseholes grabbed her.” Evie shouted as she held onto her ribs, every breath she took, every word she spoke the pain became more excruciating. “Treason on the future Queen... and....”
“And Evie saved my life.” And your baby’s life you dipshit.
“You need to go to hospital Evie.”
“I’m fine Max. They’ve given me the Botox look for free...” Trying to be funny even in this situation, pouting her now swollen lips- the friends didn’t know whether to laugh at her ‘joke’ or not.
“If Evie stood in why have you got mud all down you Riley?”
“She pushed me, not purposely. I’m fine Liam. Where’s Drake?”
“Fuck Drake. I’m fed up of you lying to everyone Riley. Take Liam upstairs and tell him the truth. I warned you that you needed more security. But do you listen? Do you fuck! Maybe now you may listen to me, because I’m not allowing you to play damsel in distress in my books anymore.”
Everyone turned to Riley, wondering what Evie was referring to. All assuming that she was playing down what they did to her.
“I’m going to go to my room if that’s okay everyone. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“I’ll escort you up Evie, Maxwell get her some painkillers and ice in her room. Riley I’ll see you in your master bedroom.”
“I’m fine Liam.”
“I insist, I need to talk about what happened and who was involved then we can get justice for you both.”
*****
Assisting her to stand up, Liam held Evie protectively and gently- before walking upstairs. It took them a while, but they eventually arrived at her room.
“So what happened?”
“Maybe if you read your text nothing would have happened- your Majesty.” Empathising his title, Liam felt guilty- knowing that the situation could have been more worse, or even fatal.
Riley ran into the ballroom, scrutinising it- Shaking, looking for her fiancé.
“Liam!”
“What’s up? Are you okay?” Holding her protectively, she began to hyperventilate- unable to prevent herself from shaking.
“It’s.... it’s... Evie...”
“She text me but I ignored it. I assumed it wasn’t important?”
“She’s hurt. She probably text you about that.... she needs help but wouldn’t allow me to help her.” Liam checked his phone, SOS- fuck. Insisting that Olivia, Maxwell and Hana stayed with Riley, whilst he and Bastien went to find Evie- he didn’t know what to expect. Arriving outside they saw her cowering on the floor, covered in blood and mud.
“Ev... Evie? What happened?” Wiping the fresh blood off her face, her lip began trembling- flashblacks of the night will forever haunt her. Bastien scooped her up, and spoke softly to her as the walked back towards the estate.
“Evie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what I was thinking. I just believed that you was texting me to berate me about my behaviour in Vegas. Do you want me to help you get undressed? Or I could get someone else to assist you?”
“I’m fine, thank you.” Watching her struggle, was frustrating for him- he just wanted to help her as a friend but didn’t want to force the issue. Eventually she was undressed and dressed in her nightwear.
“What did you mean when you asked Riley to tell me the truth? Why would you sacrifice yourself?”
“You really need to talk to her, it’s not my place to say it. I was angry when it slipped out.”
“Can you not tell me a part of it?”
“It was about saving my country’s future. That’s all I’m saying Liam.”
“Because she’s going to be Queen?”
“Something like that.” Maxwell arrived with painkillers and ice, immediately wrapping the ice in a towel he pressed gently on his friend’s lips, cheek and finally ribs after asking which parts of her body was hurting.
“I’m just going to find Drake, she needs someone to stay with her tonight. If she asks I’ve gone to find Bastien.” Liam whispered to Max, who nodded in response knowing that she would refuse any help- but possibly Drake could comfort her in ways that no one else could.
*****
“Drake, it’s Liam. Please open the door.”
“Li... what’s up? I’m tired.”
“It’s Evie... listen I know what I did in Vegas was unacceptable, but that girl needs you. People insist that she loves you even if she won’t admit it, like you.”
“Liam, if you can’t have her no one can. So whatever the issue is, I’m sure you can see to it.” Sipping the whiskey, Liam shook his head- disappointed in his friends lack of empathy.
“Drake she’s hurt! This isn’t about me and her. You know how I feel about her, I will always love her. But if you can love her, and make her happy, I’m thrilled for the two of you.”
“What do you mean she’s hurt? Where is she?”
“She’s in her room.... Tariq....” Drake didn’t give Liam the opportunity to finish that sentence- anger immediately ran through his veins. Forgetting that he was in only his boxers he really didn’t care- if Evie needed him he would be there in a flash, if she didn’t want him there he would probably ignore her and stay anyway. Storming through the door, he paused as he realised that she was hurt - beyond words.
“Evie?”
“Dr- Drake?”
“Maxwell!” Maxwell shouted enthusiastically attempting to cheer the atmosphere up. Pushing Maxwell away, she covered her injuries up with her hand as best as she could- not wanting Drake to see her in this way.
“What has he done to you?” Kneeling down in front of her, he held her hand attentively. A tear creeped from his eye, unable to stay strong- feeling weak, he needed to get his act together.
“I fear what I did to them back...I’m fine.”
“Stop saying that Evie. Liam could barely hold you walking up here. I still think you should go to hospital for a check up.”
“Max I’m fine. Please. Just check on Riley with Liam.”
“If you need anything let us know. I promise to read my texts this time.” Both Liam and Maxwell kissed her gently on the cheek- not wanting to hurt her, on their way out they tapped Drake on his bare shoulder- both providing soft smiles.
“You stink of whiskey...”
“You should know that by now... or have you been living under a rock all this time?”
“I must have been... I’ve been oblivious about other things surrounding me.”
“What do you mean?”
“It doesn’t matter. Have you brought that whiskey with you? It would probably be a better pain killer than these.”
“Does it look like I’ve brought it? I’ve forgotten my clothes. Am I hiding it in my boxers?”
“Don’t make me laugh Drake, it hurts. It does look like you’ve got something down there.. but it’s not in the shape of a whiskey bottle.” Blushing, she knew her poor flirting skills were a slight embarrassment. If he was to question it she at least had the excuse of suffering a head injury.
“You know exactly what’s down there Duchess Evangeline... we’ve both missed you.”
“Drake... I... I’m sorry for leaving you in Vegas. I had Liam wanting to sleep with me, then you didn’t come back and he said that Riley was going to do the same with you... when you came back, I didn’t smell that usual whiskey scent- I smelt her. I was jealous. I should have just spoken to you, I have issues with trust.”
“I should have spoken to you too... why did you protect Riley tonight if you believed she did that with me?”
“I was protecting my future Queen and the crown prince or princess.”
“She’s pregnant?”
“She hasn’t told Liam, I figured it out. I gave her lemonade, said if anyone asked it had vodka in it. Liam asked me to tell him but I couldn’t, it’s not my business - so please don’t tell him.”
“I won’t tell him. He’s going to be thrilled. Do you need me to do anything for you whilst I’m here?”
“I’m fine, I’m just going to sleep the pain off- hopefully.” Drake didn’t respond, instead he fluffed the pillows- hoping she could get comfy in bed. “Drake? You didn’t have to do that.”
“Didn’t need to, but I want to. Are you going to get in? Then I can readjust the position of them if you need me to.” Following his orders, she eventually was in bed- using a stoic expression she tried to hide the pain that she was feeling. “Are you comfortable your grace?”
“Yes. Thank you, but...”
“But?”
“I can defend myself.. but can you stay with me until I go to sleep. I’d feel more safe.” Agreeing, he hoped that he could control his cock- this wasn’t the time to want to be sexual. Sliding next to her, he shuddered immediately.
“Fuck, you’re cold.”
“Can you keep me warm then Mr Walker?” She asked in a seductive manner, turning her face towards him. She rubbed her fingers along his bare chest, as her head slowly rested on him. The bedding was thick and soft like a cloud- but feeling him next to her made her feel warm instantly as if she was surrounded by lava. When they finally held each other in a warm, tender loving hug; their chests rising, their breathing in unison- the ‘warm blood’ that they could feel whilst in each others embrace made them both feel content.
“Evangeline Bruley, I love you.” Her eyes widened at this impromptu confession.
“How can you be sure? We’re just friends, friends that have shared a bed- twice now. I can’t say....” Caressing her cheek gently, he moved from the side of her and straddled her- making sure to not lean on her too hard. Kissing her cheek and placing a loving kiss on her swollen lip- the pain she felt vanished for a slight moment.
“I don’t want you to say it back. I think I’ve been in love with you since we were children, remember when we was like six or something and I shared my fruit with you? I’d never share my food with anyone.” Thinking back she laughed in her mind, he was so sweet that day from her memory.
“And now it’s whiskey that you won’t want to share...”
“I’d share with you. Lina, if you ever decide to love me back- I don’t want you to tell me until you are ready. I just had to tell you, I don’t know what I’d have done if they had hurt you anymore than they have done. If I see Tariq and Neville again, I’ll kill them with my bare hands- if you’ll allow me to I’m going to protect you for the rest of my life - whether that’s as friends...”
“Or more than friends?”
******
A few hours after the incident, Bastien made his way up to the master bedroom- Olivia is going to quite potentially kill me for being this late. Knocking on the door, he hated disturbing the king at such a late time.
“Sir? I’m sorry it’s late, but I thought you’d like an update regarding the men involved in Duchess Evangeline’s attack.”
“Come in Bast, Riley’s asleep. Scotch?”
“No thank you. Sir, we found two bodies- and have the suspects in for questioning.”
“Two bodies?” Liam became nervous, his hand began to shake uncontrollably- slowly losing his usual stoic expression.
