All we need is TRUTH! Reposted from @ilyasahshabazz Thank you @girltrek Love this! #Repost @girltrek with @make_repost ・・・ Day 17 of #BlackHistoryBootcamp is dedicated to Malcolm X and The Shabazz family. “I say this to you, as I say to myself: If Malcolm and his message, so strong, so bright and so pure, was too good for those of us who have already reached manhood, there is a generation who is not yet spoiled, not yet degutted, not yet de-bold, not yet emasculated, who when they come into the light of this truth will rise up and redeem him and us and all the rest of the world. That is the meaning of Malcolm X.” - Ossie Davis We are that generation. ✊🏿❤🌈#ArtIsAWeapon #HappyPrideMonth #MarshaPJohnson Reposted from @girltrek It's Day 11 of #BlackHistoryBootcamp and we are here to do the work of telling the stories, known and unknown, of our great #freedomfighters. Today, in the middle of pride month, after a weekend of nationwide protest in support of #Blacktranspeople, we do this by celebrating the life and legacy of #activist, Marsha P. Johnson. ⁣ ⁣• • Today, as the Supreme Court ruled that LGBTQ workers are protected from discrimination, we walk in the footsteps of Marsha P. Johnson. We say her name and honor her legacy as we demand love and liberation for ALL of us. • • Marsha P. (“Pay it No Mind”) Johnson was a phenomenal Black trans woman who was a force all on her own. ⁣ ⁣ Although legend has it that it was Marsha P. Johnson who threw a shot glass at police inside of the Stonewall Inn in NYC in 1969, as an act of resistance against the police who were there harassing patrons, Marsha later said, she didn’t start the riot - she said she came running as fast as she could though once she knew it was happening, because baaaby, she was a fighter and was tired of the BS.⁣ ⁣ What happened that day at Stonewall (“The Stonewall Uprising”) is considered by many to be the catalyst that launched the modern L.G.B.T. civil rights movement and it was Marsha who would lead the fight in the streets. She, along with co-founder Sylvia Rivera, established one of the country's first safe spaces for transgender and homeless youth, Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). She also tirelessly advocated on behalf of sex workers, prisoners, and people with HIV/AIDS. Marsha’s work was powerful, but it didn’t keep her from a fate that far too many Black women have met. Marsha died in 1992. Her body was recovered in a river in New York and her death was ruled a suicide. Authorities later reclassified the cause, ruling it drowning from undetermined causes. The case remains open, and the mystery of her death reminds us of the ongoing violence black and transgender people face all too often in this country.⁣ ⁣ #GirlTrek #DaughtersOf video reposted from @pleadinglove #TraScapades #LGBTQ #Pride https://www.instagram.com/p/CBeYl64AMlh/?igshid=toufhozo7ni0

For the past few days I have been participating in @girltrek's #daughtersof 21 day bootcamp and have received too many gems not to share. As we strive to create a world that is more free for the people who will call us Ancestor, we still have every day responsibilities.A heart that needs joy and a body that needs tending to. For 21 days, Girl Trek is looking at and discussing the Black women who came before us and exploring the ways they used self care as fuel for their fight. Just WAIT until you get to Ms.Shirley Chisholm. Gems on gems. This Black history bootcamp is open to everyone, though Girl Trek is generally a space for Black women. This isn't an ad and I don't know these women. I just feel obligated to share what's working for me in hopes it will work for you too. We're in this together and I want you here for the long haul. Let me know when you start walking and if you need any tips on places to go! #Absynia #wellness #selfcareeveryday #blackhistorybootcamp #girltrek https://www.instagram.com/p/CBLlQ-fBtdr/?igshid=3s3acrrbnbba

As Black History Month 2021 comes to a close I must pay homage to one of the major theater practitioners on whose shoulders I stand. He taught mentioned and believe in me is that went through the MFA program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a wonderful man who made certain everyone in the program had access to the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in this craft. And if we needed checking he did that as well. LOL. Is my honor to share information about Black Theatre not just in February but year-round. Rest in Power Marvin Sims. Read all about it! John H. Johnson, widely regarded as the most influential African American publisher in American history, was the founder of the Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago, Illinois, responsible for the publication of JET and EBONY magazines. Ebony has remained the number-one African American magazine in the world every year since its founding. He was also the first African American to appear on the Forbes 400! In 1951, he was the first African American to be selected as Young Man of the Year by the United States Chamber of Commerce. In 1972, he was named publisher of the year by the major magazine publishers in the United States. In 1986, Johnson received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement. And in 1996, President Bill Clinton bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Johnson. He also received more than thirty honorary doctoral degrees from institutions across the country, and served as a board member or trustee of numerous businesses and philanthropic and cultural organizations. . . #BKbyNykkyNycole #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #johnhjohnson #blackhistory #blackentrepreneurship #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #blackhistoryfacts #blackhistorymatters #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryiseveryday #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #blackhistoryfact #blackhistoryyear #blackhistorymoment #blackhistoryinthemaking #tagify_app #blackhistorybootcamp #blackhistoryisworldhistory #blackhistorychallenge #blackhistoryisnow #blackhistorymonthfacts #blackhistory365✊🏾 #blackhistorymonth365 #blackhistoryeverymonth #blackhistoryallyear #blackhistorymonth✊🏾 #blackhistorymonth🖤 #blackhistory365✊ #blackhistoryfacts✊🏾 (at Arkansas/Texas State Line - Texarkana,TX 75503) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLCpJv0DrVo/?igshid=1obuws1gwgsxq

#Repost @girltrek ・・・ Day 11 of #BlackHistoryBootcamp is dedicated to the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. “Go back to Africa.” They meant it as an insult. He meant it as a rallying cry.   Some might call him the original African giant. Black, proud, and preaching the gospel of self-determination, Marcus Garvey hailed from St. Ann’s Bay Jamaica. The youngest of 11 children, Garvey was a political activist and entrepreneur, who spent his life helping to define the Black Nationalist and Pan African Movements. His vision -  big and scary to those invested in the oppression of marginalized people throughout the world - was to unite African, and people of African descent, across the diaspora and allow us to develop our own cultural, political, and economic systems free from foreign domination and outside influence.   Now you know a vision this radical had to be met with opposition. Can we say FBI? These are the stories they don’t want us to tell. They don’t want us to realize that there is already a blueprint for this work. That blueprint includes a vision laid out by Marcus Garvey at a gathering in Harlem in 1921 that included thousands of delegates from more than 22 countries. On today’s call, we’re going to talk about what went down that at this international convention and how Marcus Garvey’s work and legacy live on today.   Today marks 133 years since the birth of Marcus Garvey. Throw on some red, black, and green on top of that superhero blue and get ready to walk and talk with us as we celebrate and discuss his legacy. You KNOW this is going to be a good one. Tag a friend to join! The call kicks off at 12p ET Dial: 1 (646) 876-9923 CODE: 734464325 https://www.instagram.com/p/CECa9k1j253/?igshid=xnxoq9toq8ji

Being Heard
Tumblr media
“To change ourselves effectively, we first had to change our perceptions.” ― Stephen R. Covey
Perspective is an interesting thing. I wrote a post several years ago about feeling invisible.  When I look at the world I realize that I don’t know the depths x breadth of destruction from not being heard.

Reposted from @girltrek Ruby Dee was the zeitgeist of Black womanhood.  She was our Ruth in Raisin in the Sun, our Queen in Roots, our Mother-Sister in Do the Right Thing, our Mama Lucas in American Gangster.  Ruby Dee's face, her soulful voice, her spirited laughter is the very epitome of Black cinema. Her Hollywood career was phenomenal but life painted an even more brilliant story. She was an activist.  A forceful member of CORE, SNCC, NAACP, Urban League, AND Delta Sigma Theta.  Harlem through and through, Ruby was for us, by us. And can we talk about Black Love? You can’t utter the sound of her name, Ruby Dee, without your tongue clicking praise to her lover, Ossis Davis.  Their love was definitive. Instructional. Swoon-worthy. ...an aperitif for our collective imagination. They gave us a master class on Black Love as Legacy. Eye contact. Hand holding. Passionate embraces.  Side-by-sideness. It was, well, satisfying.  They made us remember. Today is a celebration of Black Love, starring Ruby Dee. ...and Ossie Davis. Posted @withregram • @girltrek It’s Day 12 and today we walk in the footsteps of Eartha Kitt 💪🏾 Orson Welles called her “the most exciting woman in the world.” And she was. Eartha Kitt sang in 11 languages. Danced with Katherine Dunham. Broke boundaries for Black women in Hollywood when she played Cat woman. She was nominated for Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, and Emmys. And still, she felt unwanted, unloved. At the end, she was asked to summarize her life in six words. She said, “Rejected, ejected, dejected, used, accused, abused.” Let’s explore her life and legacy today, and the lessons we can learn from her. #BlackHistoryBootcamp #GirlTrek #DaughtersOf⁣ ⁣ Walk and Talk call at 12pm ET 💙⁣ Dial: 1 (646) 876-9923 CODE: 734464325⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CBidqQOBdGV/?igshid=eb564xv7z13z

Some of us woke up angry. Some of us have been swallowing our anger and hoping that we could choose to feel something different today. I saw a therapist a while ago who when I told her I was so, so angry said "good. Your anger is a sign you value you. Your anger means you know you deserve better. Now, how will you use your anger as it's meant to be used? In service of you?" It's something that I hadn't thought of before. I am a woman, the worst thing a woman can be is angry. Nobody likes an angry woman, especially not an angry Black woman. Every time we are met with injustice we are told to rise above it, to cajole the other side into believing in our right to live with good behavior. But we deserve our anger and others deserve to hear it. We are angry because we are human and it's our right to live free. We are angry because we love each other and one life lost is too many. We angry because we value ourselves and the gift of life that is being snuffed out by those we PAY. Today I am revisiting Audre Lorde's "The Uses of Anger, Women Responding To Racism" first sent to me in @girltrek's #daughtersof Black History bootcamp. It's a vital read for anyone who woke up angry and anyone feeling uncomfortable with the fact that people are angry. Read it and send it to a friend. Tell me how you will use your anger #Absynia #makersmovement #makersofinstagram #audrelorde #blackfeminism #blackhistorybootcamp https://www.instagram.com/p/CBbJlWRhdqs/?igshid=f6yfzrc61vd
