bren aldric ermendrud-thelyss of den thelyss ?
i know this is part of the large cluster of asks going around lots of blogs and probably warrants a more lighthearted answer but. man. ive got feelings about Bren.
Bren never would have met Essek, and certainly would not have taken on the Thelyss den name. He would have been- different. younger. Maybe arrogant, by some measure, judgement too clouded to see a world where it could happen. (Not even touching on an Essek whose path was unaltered by Caleb, by the M9). Bren is also, effectively, dead.
But also- in the same way that Caleb carries Bren- his guilt, his love, his mistakes, his losses- with him, Bren can't die as long as Caleb lives. (Bren can't die as long as Eadwulf looks over at a head of red hair and feels something tug in his gut. Bren can't die as long as Astrid recognizes a particular spark in Caleb's expression when he makes some triumphant point or another about magic and thinks about ghosts that haunt you.)
i dont think bren would have ever taken on this name. but also, its kind of massively healing and hopeful to think he did.

Okay so I don’t know if you do fic finding, but there was this one fanfic that I read a while ago that I haven’t been able to find again and it’s upsetting me. It was about Caleb and if Trent has given him and the rest of the Blumentrio branding tattoos. I remember this one line from the fic that said it was “so that they could identify their bodies without needing their heads”.
i don’t want to think about how long this has been sitting in my inbox, anon, i’m so so sorry because i don’t even have any answers for you :( i took a look on ao3 but was unsuccessful. if anyone has any ideas, feel free to reply or send me another message!

Pablo Held - Adventures - another Killian Eng album cover, this one for a jazz piano quartet plus chamber orchestra - very nice!
Interactive interplay meets chamber orchestra - how does that work? On his 15th album, Pablo Held embarks on a journey deep into the parallel universe between improvisation & composition. He is joined by his longtime trio, Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras and the EOS Chamber Orchestra conducted by Susanne Blumenthal. Held’s compositions, arranged by his longtime friend and collaborator Niels Klein, shine in a new light and take the listener on an expedition into the unknown. Whumptober2022 Day 7: The Way You Shake and Shiver
Trent Ikithon knew how to make the three of them hurt. He knew what made them all tick, and knew how to take that and manipulate it, shaping it into something ugly and sharp for them to hurt themselves, and each other, with.  The trio of young mages from Blumenthal, so loyal and eager, and his to mold.  Sometimes though, you had to hurt something to mold it. Break it and put it back together with veins of steel.
That was why he gave Astrid the knife this time. Why he placed it gently in her right hand, and a residuum crystal in her left, and simply told her:
“Go on, you know what to do.” she nodded.  He was right, of course.  She knew exactly what to do. Bren and Wulf both sat in their chairs, arms and legs bound with leather straps, their breath even and controlled. They all knew what came next. The blade would slice their skin, and the crystals would be inserted. They would experience blinding, white hot pain until their bodies couldn’t take it anymore. They would scream their throats raw and struggle until the leather bit into their wrists.
This time, though, it wouldn’t be Trent. It would be Astrid. She knew why, of course. Because she wanted his position one day, when he dies by her hand or someone else’s, and this would be required of her. She would have to do this to countless other young mages in order to carry on the Volstrucker program, and not all of them would be strong like her and her friends. Some would be far weaker, and they would shrivel up. And it would be her hand that killed them.
She took a step forwards, towards Bren, the metal flashing in the flickering candle light as she got closer to his forearm. It was already littered with scars, some a few months old by now, and his veins flowed dark.  She made the mistake of looking at his face before cutting into his skin, and she saw the brave mask he was putting on.
You wouldn’t have known that, seeing him. His face set and eyes hard despite the grinding of his teeth. It broke her a little inside, but you wouldn't see that either. Unless you were Trent. She knew he saw it, because she saw it too. She saw it as her hand came closer, and it shook. Just a slight tremor, but enough that the blade wiggled as it made contact with his skin.
The blood that flowed from the wound looked wrong. It always did. Blood, fresh from the body, always looked fake. It was too red, too bright. I looked like the paint that theatre troupes used, and that made you think ‘blood can’t possibly be that red’ except that it was. Astrid focused her thoughts on that. On the single, trickling line of too-bright red that flowed down Bren’s arm and pooled on the wood of the chair. And, when enough of it pooled, she focused on the shard of green in her hand, and on pressing that into the red gash until it was covered. She ignored his screams, and the flashing in his veins, and the pain that it caused them both.  She just focused on the red, until it was Wulf’s turn.
At the end, Trent told her he was proud. That she had passed. That he saw promise in her.  All she could focus on was the blood. The blood on their arms, on the chairs, on her hands. It covered everything, even the smell of burning wood and skin.  It kept her focused. This was the blood of the Empire, the blood of their families. It was the blood of the people she was protecting and it flowed so that they would be ready.  One day, when it was their blood or the blood of the enemy, they would be ready.
Trent Ikithon knew how to make them hurt. And he knew how to twist them, and mold them, and use their hurt against them. He also knew how to take that hurt, and turn it into a weapon. And Astrid Becke knew that she was his best weapon. The sharpest dagger in his arsenal, covered in blood, and cleanest to cut. And her hand never wavered again.

The Blumenthal trio in cr2 made me think of a quote I heard last summer on the Locked Tomb episode of the Wizards vs Lesbians podcast (in the case of Caleb, Astrid, Eadwulf, and Ikithon, I guess that would be Wizard vs Other, Bisexual Wizards) so I went back to find it. I've transcribed the relevant section below for other Blumendrei enjoyers (yes I used an upside down smiley face as a tone indicator it's efficient)
(This quote includes significant SPOILERS for the Locked Tomb series; I personally wouldn't consider them book-breaking spoilers, but your mileage may vary, so heads up)
--
Isaac: I was, I wanted to, to get your take on what, um, you think these creatures represent--the revenant beasts, the planet ghosts.
Alexis: I mean to some degree, we don't really know, we haven't really seen them up close enough to know--
Isaac: Well we can't. 🙃 We've heard them described, but it just, the way that they fill anybody who's done the lyctoral process with mortal terror upon seeing them, um, I first thought, oh, this is a representation of like the unreasoning horror of death, but that's clearly not the way that this book thinks about death or treats death.
Alexis: (agreeing) No.
Isaac: I was like oh it's guilt actually, (Crosstalk, agreeing: Yeah, yes!), that's what guilt does to your brain. [Chuckles.]
Alexis: Well and--Yes! I think it is guilt, and I also think that it's, um, I think that it's supposed to be sort of the world outside your abuse bubble.
Isaac: Yeah, because it turns out, you know, we get a little smell of this in the epilogue--that there is actually a huge universe out there--
Alexis: With like shops, with like stores! And sausages! And…
Isaac: Yeah, it's like this really, it reminds me of Utena--uh, I mean [laughs] we might have to reset the Utena counter too, if that's a thing we want to do--
Alexis: The thing is I don't MIND talking about UTENA! {as opposed to Homestuck}
[Both laughing]
Isaac: But, the, John's like, 'It's a shame the world is the way it is' thing really reminds me of {?? Utena character} in both his creepiness and his, you know, 'Well, this is the way the world and the universe that exists, incidentally the one that I created by my laws and that I've trapped you all in, and that I've sealed you into by your guilt and sin for a thing that I manipulated you into doing.'
Alexis: Right, and this is honestly where the abuser and the empire really converge, because that is both the logic of the abusive parent or significant other and it is also very much the logic of empire.
Isaac: Yes. But it turns out, and it turns out there is in fact an entire universe outside the, like, these horrible tiny worlds that are all that is left of, uh, of Earth's solar system (Crosstalk: Yes. Yes, so--) and they don't actually enjoy being ruled by John and his empire.
Alexis: Yeah. And so I think that the resurrection beasts are their guilt; they are the, the outside world; but you know, and the thing is, when you're in, you know, an abusive situation, guilt and shame and terror are some of the things that keep you in. (Crosstalk: Yeah.) And, you know, often it's--your own mistakes can get very much weaponized against you and the way you feel bad about them can be very much weaponized against you and I think that, you know, the Resurrection Beasts are a very good example of this, but I think they also work fairly well as a metaphor for the guilt, the sort of collective guilt for war crimes and other atrocities that our empires commit. Because this is what happens when you kill a planet, it turns out; you get…a revenge monster.
Isaac: Yes. And, one of the things about the revenge monster is that it's impossible for you to think critically or clearly about it because the overwhelming feeling of shame and terror, just, uh, overrides everything else, overrides your entire brain, and so you continue to make mistakes in an effort to either deny or fall into that oblivion. Um, you're either, it's either not true or the guilt is so severe that you have to throw yourself into Hell, [chuckles] neither of which are actually the way things get better.

"GEORGE BIRD GOT FIVE YEARS TERM," Hamilton Spectator. November 11, 1913. Page 12. --- Stole Teamster's Outfit and Skipped to Detroit ---- Radcliffe Drew Three Years on Trio of Charges ---- Five years in Kingston penitentiary was the sentence handed out by Judge Snider, who presided at the weekly session of the criminal court this morning, to George Bird, [pictured, top] who pleaded guilty to stealing a team of horses, along with a dump wagon and several other articles, from J. J. Price. Bird drove the outfit to Port Perry, where he disposed of it for $110 and then he left for Detroit, where he made the money go like down before the wind. The horses have been recovered, but it will be a month before, they will be of much use, as it will take that long for them to get over the rough usage they received at the hands of Bird.
DECLINED TO ELECT Kago Ratkovick was charged with perjury in a police court case on October 22. He declined to elect and was remanded.
SENTENCE SUSPENDED Arthur Kavanaugh was charged with stealing $18 from the till in the Waldorf hotel on November 6, and with stealing $5 from a Chinese restaurant on North James street on the same date. He pleaded guilty to both charges. His counsel, C. W. Bell, explained that Kavanaugh was under the influence of liquor on the night of the trouble, and that his character was beyond reproach outside of a few escapades he had while under the influence of liquor. Some of his neighbors spoke of his previous good character, and he was allowed to go on suspended sentence.
GOT THREE YEARS John Radcliffe [pictured, bottom] and Arthar Mike, charged with stealing from the store of Louis Blumenthal, pleaded guilty. Radcliffe was also charged with breaking into the store of Haines and Ross, and with stealing $14.50 from D. E. Christlaw, of Hamilton. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Radcliffe was sentenced to three years in Kingston penitentiary. Mike was allowed to go. He is but sixteen years of age and comes from Hagersville.
TWO MONTHS FOR TIM Timothy Plooard, charged with stealing tickets and a conductor's punch from the G.T.R., pleaded guilty. He was given two months in jail, owing to his previous bad record.
[Bird was 22, from Madoc, Ontario, a farmer by trade, and went in for theft. He was convict #F-685 at Kingston Penitentiary and did end up working on the prison farm, eventually. He was never reported and was released on parole June 1915. He eventually enlisted in the Canadian military. Radcliffe was 19, born in Belfast, a cook, and he had served a previous term in the Central prison in Toronto. He was convict #F-686 and worked in the prison kitchen. He was reported once, in June 1915, and was deported in early 1916.]

U.S. Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Rein in Apple, Google App Stores
By Diane Bartz
WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - A bipartisan trio of senators introduced a bill that would rein in app stores of companies they said exert too much market control, including Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google. Zoho Mail One
Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Amy Klobuchar teamed up with Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn to sponsor the bill, which would bar big app stores from requiring app providers to use their payment system. It would also prohibit them from punishing apps that offer different prices or conditions through another app store or payment system.
"I found this predatory abuse of Apple and Google so deeply offensive on so many levels," Blumenthal said in an interview Wednesday. "Their power has reached a point where they are impacting the whole economy in stifling and strangling innovation."
Blumenthal said he expected companion legislation in the House of Representatives "very soon."
The stakes are high for Apple, whose App Store anchors its $53.8 billion services business as the smartphone market has matured.
Apple said its app store was "an unprecedented engine of economic growth and innovation, one that now supports more than 2.1 million jobs across all 50 states."
Google declined to comment, but a spokeswoman cited previous company statements that Android devices often come preloaded with two or more app stores and that app sellers can allow downloads without using Google's Play Store.
The bill won praise from Spotify, Epic and Tile. Tile, which makes tags to find lost objects, complained earlier this year about Apple launching a rival product.
A similar law revision has been introduced in South Korea. Google said last year it would enforce certain in-app payment methods there and receive 30% commission fees from non-game digital content.
Apple's control over apps on its Store, and 15% to 30% commissions on digital sales have come under regulatory scrutiny. A federal judge is reviewing testimony to rule on an antitrust lawsuit by "Fortnite" creator Epic Games.
Epic also sued Google for its app store practices, as have a big group of state attorneys general alleging that it unlawfully worked to maintain a monopoly for its app store for Android phones.
