How do context sensitive actions work? It seems like they could go very wrong pretty easily.
A context-sensitive action is an action that can only occur under a specific conditions. In order to allow them to be used, we need to detect that those conditions have been met. If all conditions are satisfied, we can offer the player the option of performing the action.
Tumblr media
Imagine we're trying to add a fairly common context-sensitive action - vaulting over a waist-high wall and landing on our feet on the other side - to our game. In order to do this, we need a vaulting-into-landing animation and a way to detect a vaultable waist-high wall. What kind of conditions would need to be met in order to allow the player to vault over the wall? Here are some conditions that I think we would need to meet:
Tumblr media
We cannot vault over a wall and land on ground that is a different height than what we started from or the animation won’t work (clip through the floor or land on thin air)
We can only vault over a waist-high wall that is exactly waist-height so that the animation does not clip through or float above the top of the wall
We cannot play the landing animation if there isn't enough ground on the other side of the wall for our feet to land on (no vaulting over a cliff or into another piece of geometry)
We cannot vault over the wall if the wall isn't thick enough for our character model to place hands on it as part of the vault
We may have to adjust the character model's position and orientation in order to ensure the correct approach angle and starting location
We shouldn't move the player too far or it will look really weird, so we need to restrict the player to certain facing angles and distances
Tumblr media
This list of requirements sets specific limits of where in our levels we can place these vaultable walls. We can't put them in places where these conditions cannot be met, which means that we need a certain amount of clearance and open space around each vaultable wall. This effectively standardizes contextual actions within the level environment - the level designer can only place vaultable walls in areas that meet these conditions. This kind of constraint exists for all contextual actions - wall running must be at least this length and cover this much area and the player must approach from this angle, climbing a ledge must be at least this tall and have at least this much flat space on top to stand up after ascending, computer keyboards must be this height and this angle in order for the animations to line up, chairs must be a standardized height to match player sitting animations, all stair steps must be the same height in order for the player model's foot not to clip through them, and so on and so forth. If you carefully observe games like Uncharted and Tomb Raider while playing, you'll start seeing the standardization in terms of size, spacing, approach angle, etc. of many of their contextual actions.

Personally I imagine that Telemachus has his mom's hair color and eyes,, but he still creepily looks like Odysseus. So, naturally, I have to ask:
Do you think that Penelope sometimes flinced when she saw her son? Because he looks so much like her husband?? Like, he would pass down the hallway and greet his mother, and she would think it's Odysseus - a flicker of hope on her face, only to realize it's her son. And after a while Telemachus doesn't know if that brief drop of her face is disappointment because it's him or because it's not Odysseus.
Do you think Eurycleia sometimes openly cried when she looked at Telemachus?? Because he has the same slightly impish grin just like his father?? Just like the boy she raised so many years ago?? Do you think she unconciously scrubbed more thoroughly around his thigh? Telemachus would wince at the sudden roughness and Eurycleia would realize that he doesn't have that scar that needed more cleaning to make sure debris didn't get stuck in it??
Do you think that Eumaeus would rush out of his hut when he heard Telemachus laugh? Because, as he got older, even his voice started sounding a bit like his father's?? Only to abruptly stop when he realized that it's not his master??
Do you think that even Telemachus would stare at a bronze mirror or at his reflection in a puddle and try to see his father - the one he barely remembers - in his own reflection?? He would imagine himself broader, stronger, with a beard?? His mother told him that he got his hair and eyes from her. So he tries to imagine something else in their place. He doesn't know what he's even looking for or thinking about. Just something, anything to get a bare idea of a man that is his father.
And do you think that as years went on, others started seeing more and more Odysseus in him and less and less Telemachus in him? Even if it wasn't intentional? They treated him like his father. They would offer him the fruit his father loved. They would sometimes expect him to wield the weapons his father could. They would tell him how much he looks like his father. And Telemachus would simply smile in response. But over time it was a slightly pained smile. At first he prided himself for all of that, he wanted to know everything about his father. He wanted to know how much of his son he is. But he finds the fruit sour. His arms slightly tremble when he tries to string a bow (not necessarily The bow™).
Do you think that over time, even he started feeling less and less like himself? Do you think that subconciously he tried acting like his father (based on the stories he's heard)? For the kingdom's sake, for his mother's sake, for his own sake? After all, "son of Odysseus" was his main trait. He was haunted by the ghost of the man he doesn't even know. But he does know him, doesn't he? Everyone tells him just how much he is like his father. But what part of him is like his father?? What part of him is like his father? Everything he does, everything he is, is apparently an echo of his father. But what part is Telemachus? What part of Telemachus is like his father? Is he like his father or is he slowly becoming his father? His voice isn't his own. His skin isn't his own. Hell, the blood in his veins isn't his own. It's the blood of Odysseus. Is that who he is?? A replacement for the king?? A mere stand-in until he comes back?? If he comes back?? Will he always have to act, to be a copy of his father?? Will he ever be himself? But who is he even? Who is Telemachus? Yes, he is the son of Odysseus (as a way of identification). But who is simply Telemachus?
DO YOU THINK?

#Ted Lasso#Shannon Hayes#Jason Sudeikis#Hannah Waddingham#Brendan Hunt#Sarah Niles#*mine: gif#*mine: TL Scene#*mine: TL theory#1k#at the beginning of Season 2 I was thinking about the office scene angle/framing with Ted and other characters gifset I made#with that in my head while watching season 2 I thought this was similar#I'm always interested in the framing and choices for scenes#the first time they go with Shannon here because Beard is having relationship problems#next episode (bonus episode) we have Ted and Rebecca I mean something something relationship going on a date#episode 5 Beard wanting to know the ending of the joke from season 1 about owls something something that's a long time to wait#Dr. Sharon Fieldstone coming to Ted who is having a panic attack...in episode 10#something something relationships with our parents.........#Last episode 12 Ted alone after the article#just breaking these 5 scenes down tells a lot but I had a feeling that first time with Shannon that this alleyway was going to be important#don't get me wrong I giffed Paved Court for season 1 which shows up 5 times there#but those scenes don't feel as big as these ones#I thought about putting all the gifs together in one set but originally I only giffed the season 2 bits#that was where my head was with this but figured I should do season 1 too#so really it was an after thought#wait maybe the season 1 scene here are just as important#or it all means nothing and I just watch things a bit differently#I still have only watched season 2 three ties through and I've lost count on season 1#note to self you still need to make that Coach Beard and Ted set and making a Shannon one

YAYAYAY!!!!! My final funguary guys!!
ANT (Acidity Near Thresholds; xe/xer, they/them) finally gets a redesign!
Oops ANT got molded :[ don't worry, they're ok! This is for the icing sugar fungus prompt.
Tox/The Moldy (it/its, ze/zir), for the final magic mushroom prompt. I chose to interpret it as a free space, so this guy is based on moldy dwarf bulborbs from Pikmin 4 :D Also Tox is responsible for ANT being toxified lol
Also funguary has been SO MUCH FUN and it's the first art month thing I've managed to complete! (even though i skipped some prompts)

idk man. from 2008 to 2019 i was self-employed. i dropped out of high school in 2006 and then dropped out of college in 2010 and moved to a swamp to watch my great-grandma die because that was the only thing i could afford to do. then i went back to college and lived off student loans for a while. if i managed to scrape together $500 in a single month, that was a very good month. i applied for a gamestop credit card i shouldn't have qualified for and used it to buy taco bell gift cards for when i couldn't afford groceries, then paid a stupid amount of interest on the cost of my taco bell gift cards because i couldn't afford to pay off the balance.
during that period i bought over 2000 ebooks and 600 steam games. i like to believe that i'll read or play them someday. i probably won't, with most of them. but it was nice to have the option. i paid $10 a year for a domain name that did nothing but show a single image when you went there because i thought that was funny. i bought every sims expansion. i bought a ps4 and pretended i was in debt for a ps4 instead of taco bell gift cards and the sims. i barely ever played anything on the ps4, but it was nice to have the option.
when i got a part-time retail job in 2019 ($12 an hour! 20 hours a week!) i felt RICH. i was getting $200-$300 a week! that's so much fucking money! i was spending most of it on gas, and food that i could eat in a store break room without dying. but it was still so much money!! i paid off all my credit cards and then immediately ran them back up. i bought matching couches for me and my cat at tj maxx. i bought a ferris wheel for mini cupcakes. i bought cute dresses and shoes that i never had a chance to wear because the only time i went anywhere was to work, in my work uniform. i was 29 and that was the most money i had ever had in my life. now i'm 32 with a full-time office job and most of my money goes toward debt but the rest of it ends up being spent on dumb shit. every month i look at my budget and try to figure out where it all went wrong and every month the conclusion is, "spent too much money on dumb shit". you would think that i would try to stop doing that, and yet.
it's like. i was poor and now i'm lurking somewhere near the low end of middle class, and in both cases buying dumb shit was simultaneously proof that i would be rich if i could just stop buying dumb shit, and that i couldn't possibly understand true poverty if i was capable of buying dumb shit. i do not know how to explain to people that i will always waste more time and money than anyone ever should on dumb shit that i think is funny. there is nothing i want more than to spend my last dollar on a laugh and my last minute laughing, and no one's insistence that they would use them better will change this.

Ok dude to a recent post of yours is have to know what other plants are sluts?
Rhododendron is the QUEEN of sluts. It will not STOP. Uprooting this fast-growing monstrosity is dick and half a ball because it has strong roots and woody stems; UK conservationists hate this stuff.
The most monstrous slut, Colonel War Crimes of the slut kingdom, is Giant Hogweed. Not ONLY is it voracious, not only is it huge, but this plant is NOXIOUS. You have to sequester it off when you see it and eradicate it in PPE. Actively dangerous just to stand around.
Other sluts are sitka spruces, mile-a-minuteweed, japanese honeysuckle, skunk cabbage... very aggressive invaders. The UK is under seige with invasive species since the island is REALLY unique in its soil chemistry. Once you deacidify it, you have a hard time fixing that.

i know everyone is really mad at kotoko, but i’ve been thinking a bit about why she ended up like this
I have a friend who has a really similar mindset to kotoko, so i'm kinda familiarized with how it works. as i've said before, she really sees everything in black and white, and while she originally said she would forgive those who did the same as her (basically amane, and fuuta to some extent), after her t1 inno verdict, her ideals got reinforced, well, more like radicalized and pushed them a step further, losing her original self/mindset in the process
every time i talk to this friend about kotoko, they really do see themselves in kotoko, and with everything currently going on (and them going to therapy and trying to be a better person, and just getting bad looks from others when they talk) has made them notice how some stuff isn't that good or how it's frowned upon. my friend has a black and white sense of justice, and when i told them about how kotoko would’ve harm amane, they went “it's good to know she wouldn't spare the child” (i know, messed up). their context to that is, we all know how children can be some of the most horrible people in earth, innocence can be seen as beautiful, but it can also be terrifying. their argument is that when children commit a crime, they're not trial respectively to what they committed, a child who killed someone doesn't get the same repercussions as an adult who killed someone.
having said that, that mindset comes from a place of black and white morals, of difficulties during childhood, of seeing how people arent brought to justice and of how one suffers so much but no one cares. this friend struggles with empathy and struggles to understand others in general. the main difference they have with kotoko is that they try, that they were put in situations where they had to face reality and other people
i believe kotoko must’ve went through something that in the end pushed her to this belief system. “it doesnt excuse what she did” i know, but i still think if she have had someone to guide her towards the right path, someone who she actually connected with and showed her why her actions and beliefs were harmful, this wouldn't have ended like this…
now here, im not asking people to forgive her, i actually think that a guilty verdict this trial would be really good for her and hopefully would force her to face reality in some way
