what do you think are the top five python species to have as pets? pythons are definitely my favourite snake family (other than vipers but as much as it may pain me, having a gaboon viper as a pet would be extremely bad for everyone involved) and i think if i ever got a pet snake it would be a ball python but i’m interested to find out about other pythons that make good pets
Pythons are awesome! Here are my top picks for the best pet pythons. It turned out to be...a very Australia-centric list, actually.
Children's pythons (including spotted pythons)! Children's pythons are my favorite pythons to recommend for beginners. They're smaller and hardier than ball pythons, and much less sensitive. Their care requirements are comparable to what you'd do for a ball python, but they're by far more tolerant of mistakes and are much, much better eaters. They're awesome snakes.
Tumblr media
Stimson's pythons! Another awesome choice from the Antaresia genus, the same genus as Children's pythons. Stimson's are great pet pythons and great pets in general - they're super cute, and their husbandry is a bit easier. They like it warmer and less humid than Children's. They can be a bit nippy as babies but they usually outgrow that really well.
Tumblr media
Bredl's pythons (also called Bredli pythons and Centralian carpet pythons)! Great for anyone who loves the carpet python look but wants less of the carpet python attitude. Bredl's (Morelia bredli) tend to be much more docile and easy to handle than their cousins the carpet pythons (Morelia spilota sp.). They like it warmer and are very tolerant of lower humidity levels, and they have a reputation for being very calm, easy-going adults.
Tumblr media
Anthill pythons! The smallest member of the Antaresia genus, these little cuties average under 2 feet long. These little snakes are great for people who want a python in a bit of a smaller package! Like their cousins, they're hardy and pretty easy to care for - the only strike about them is it can be a little tricky to get them going on rodents, so it's important to buy a well-started baby. That's true for all snakes in the Antaresia genus, really, but anthills can be particularly stubborn.
Tumblr media
Ball pythons! Ball pythons really are awsome! They're cute as little buttons and sweet as anything. But I do actually caution against them as first pet snakes, because their husbandry can be tricky for beginners and they're very sensitive and prone to going off food if you get it wrong. They're wonderful second snakes, though, and good firsts for a committed, prepared keeper.

Highlights of this week's episode of "my snakes are incredibly stupid"
Dzd (honduran milk snake) loves food so much. In the process of trying to eat a mouse, he bit the air several times, and himself. Twice.
Leo (Bredli python) stuck his nose in a hole he definitely does not fit through in the lid of his tank once I brought the mouse over, he was up near the top at the start and took a minute to figure out he needed to go down.
And now he is eating a mouse sideways. Buddy, I know you're ready for the next size up, but. Come on. That is not necessary. I would prefer you go back to eating them backwards.

Thoughts on the Bredl's python as a pet? I love their look and they're a native snake here in Australia so I can get one.
I adore them, you won't go wrong if you decide on one! They're great pets even for first-time keepers, very hardy and usually quite easy to work with.
All carpet pythons (genus Morelia) have a bit of a bad rep and are stereotyped as sassy little biters, but Bredl's pythons (M. bredli) are so sweet they've managed to dodge this reputation. They're awesome snakes, my biggest note with them is they can get pretty big (around 6.5-8.5 ft/2-2.5 m on average), so you'll want to plan on a large enclosure.
I'm honestly jealous, I have Australian friends and I've met their Bredl's pythons many times and absolutely adore them, but they're so hard to find in my neck of the USA that I'll probably never be able to have one myself. Alas. Just like my woes with woma pythons. 😔

i am so IN LOVE these babies are so adorable and precious
Meet Namira and Hircine 😁
Namira is a hypo 66% het stripe female. Hircine is a 66% het stripe male from a different clutch. He is also from hypo blood and might end up a little lighter in color than typical wild type bredli, but he is not a hypo himself. I do think there's a good chance they will both prove out for genetic stripe, though, considering the significant striping they both display. Time will tell. And either way, they are both gorgeous animals and I'm so thrilled to have them!
These were quick photos immediately after unboxing. I will take better ones when I get home before leaving them to settle in 😊

Hey I'm wondering if anyone has made or seen a growth chart for bredlis?
Like even a roughly laid out chart of age to length and weight, or even a timeline of one person's snake(s)?
I've had my baby boy Leo for almost two years, and I've never kept any pythons before. He's okay, don't worry, and he's growing beautifully, but I haven't been able to track down any Bredli specific body condition or growth charts, so I'm relying on behavioural cues, photos and videos of trusted keeper's snakes, and charts for related species.
I promise I take good care of him, but it would just be reassuring to have specific references to make sure we're on the right track. I think he's a little skinny right now (you can probably see he's too triangular in the first Christmas tree picture) so I'm gonna feed a little more frequently for a bit. But, references are important! This is why!
Does anyone know where I could find something like that?
Here's the boy, I love him so you must see:

Image ID: three photos of my 2.5 year old Bredli python, Leodore. He's brown and white, the brown bands edged in black. In the first photo, he is curled up inside a tissue box. In the second and third he's in a Christmas tree, lounging in the branches in one and looking near the camera in the other. End ID.
