Jerry Juhl originally wrote Gonzo as a character with low self-esteem, and originally in the 70s, Dave Goelz leaned into that. At that time, he used Gonzo to highlight his personality and fears. However, when he asked Henson to change the puppet to have more expressive eyes, the wacky phase of Gonzo's life started. Gonzo's third, soulful phase came after Goelz went to therapy and began "unlocking [his] emotions."

EP Review: The Rolling Stones - Confessin’ the Blues (Influences - Vol. 1)

They call themselves the World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band. But when the Stones got Rolling they were five English white boys red-hot for black American blues.

Those roots are re-examined on Confessin’ the Blues (Influences - Vol. 1), a six-song, digital-only EP that also seems to kick off what promises to be an interesting series.

This is the original five - singer/harp blower Mick Jagger; guitarists Keith Richards and Brian Jones; and the rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman - at the beginning of their six-decade trip. There’s no indication of “Gimme Shelter,” “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’” or “Far Away Eyes” in this collection, which leans heavily on Willie Dixon with “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” “Little Red Rooster” and “I Want to be Loved” alongside one song each from Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters and Jay McShann.

If the Stones had stopped here, these tracks would be forgettable. Given what eventually unfolded, they’re essential building blocks and - because they’re mostly forgotten - loaded with gee-whiz factor.
