Man one thing that sucks about playing BG3 right as it comes out is like. That’s a big question and I’ll try to do my best! Explaining something that technic not in your native language can be uncertain so, I’m sorry in advance 🙏

First of all: Observe. Comics, doujins, mangas,… Just observe to learn how others do.

Comic is a narrative art so, the most important things in comic is the reading way aka the panels (the angles you choose), the speech bubbles and how you put them in your comic page. It’s really the first thing you have to put in your storyboard!

Texts in the speech bubbles are also veeeery important. Texts that are badly formatted is painful to read… Avoid doing cesura as often as possible and do nice text forms.

And please, if you choose a manga layout, do not put japanese speech bubbles, they’re really not suitable for western texts.

If you want to to a webtoon instead of a regular comic/manga, you have to thing your layout quite differently. Webtoons are more like storyboard for animation. Like a series of forceful scenes. Plus, you have to deal with the required format. I’m not pretty used to do some, I’m just working with a lot of them (I do the texts for them). I can recommend you Sweet Home (cw: horror, hikikomori) to see how the author use the long layout of the webtoon to skillfully instill the jump scares in their episodes!

A quick “how I do” to finish my blah-blah! ٩( ᐛ )و

First, I write my plot like a play (quick context for each act, full dialogues with stage directions) then storyboard. Tiny storyboard, I sketch 15 pages on an A4 page. Better global view. I can’t give specific advices on how to do panels (cause it’s something that just pops in my mind during my storyboard stage 💦) just keep in mind to diversify your angles especially during a talk between 2 characters. Don’t do a shot reverse shot, it’s just boring.

Then pages. I usually rework my storyboard at the sketch stage ‘cause I have a new eye on it lol

Also, don’t forget to think about the facing pages for the narration. You can do some fun page layout!

Omg that’s wonderful!! Don’t be scared, the mj fanfic side of the fandom was literally non existent on here when I first posted my fics and now look there’s more of us <3 We need more mj writers!!

Listen you really have to get the thoughts of “no one’s gonna read them, they’re gonna flop blah blah” out your head, and I know it’s hard but trust me the best way to KILL your motivation is by relying on external validation. Of course I’m not gonna sit here and say that people reblogging and commenting on fics won’t give you more motivation to write but that can’t be the only reason/source. So try to remind yourself that you’re doing this for yourself, for fun, as a hobby etc.

Now when it comes to writing advice, first find out what style of writings you’re most comfortable with and length. Do you think you’ll prefer to write a few thousand words or shorter fanfictions? Do you want to write one-shots, headcanons or drabbles? Try to experiment more or less with all to see what you’re best at.

Then, if a blank page intimidates you (I relate) try to just word vomit all your ideas/things you want to mention in your fic, like a little summary. To make this even less intimidating use the text to speech button and just start yapping. Then you’ll be able to use that as some sort of guideline.

While writing try to include both mikes and readers/ocs perspective, even if you’re writing from the first point of view. (Btw I’d recommend using the second or third pov, but you can do whatever feels more natural) this will make the readers feel more connected to the story and want to continue reading. Also don’t waste time by being too descriptive about things that don’t add much to the story, there’s no need to describe the outfits, or morning routines before your characters meet up yk, unless it’s necessary/integral to the plot.

When it comes to writing dialogue (if you’re gonna go for Mike) try to recall his interviews and the way he speaks, use similar language and even phrases/words to make the conversation feel more natural. Trust me most people hate when the dialogues seem unrealistic and fake, it shouldn’t feel like reading about your own oc who just has mikes appearance and name, if that makes sense.

What websites do you use for fanfic research? I usually use Google but heard that people on the writing Tumblr side used JSTOR which blew my mind! I didn't know this!!! I read that you planned up to a year for your fanfic and thought, "Pls share your resources". Many thanks!

So in regards to "fanfic research", do you mean researching the source material or researching writing techniques?

For the former, aside from just revisiting (or replaying) the source material, I mostly read wikis and watch theory videos on YouTube. Video essays too! Those can be rife with inspiration. Then there's the odd meta analysis here and there on Tumblr. (I also have never heard of JSTOR btw 😅)

In regards to craft, I do watch a lot of writing advice on YouTube and read articles (Mythcreants.com is my fave resource for flexible-yet-actionable advice), but I also happen to have graduated uni with a major in creative and professional writing.

The problem with most writing advice though (and a university degree lol) is that it assumes that you're trying to monetise your creative writing, and it's for the "original" novel medium which, as Sarah Z points out in one of her videos, is a completely different medium from fanfiction. That's actually why I make the content I do: to give writing advice that is specific to the medium and cultural conditions of fanfiction.

If you're looking for further resources specific to fanfiction though:

Springhole.net has some articles.

I also recommend @ao3commentofthedayntoftheday. They don't always have their inbox open, and they take a while to answer, but when they do, their answers are kind and insightful and then they invite others to share their thoughts, meaning you can get advice from a whole community.

For something more immediate, however, check out the r/Fanfiction and r/AO3 subreddits.

As for my 12-month planning process, it's more the fact that I just have a very detailed way of doing things. Usually the first 9 months of that process involves dumping a bunch of ideas in Evernote, and then the final 3 months is when I'll actually hone in on the plot, characters, and worldbuilding. I used to do that in MS Word, but now I prefer to use Milanote since it allows me to be way more visual and it's easier to navigate my extensive outlines. I can't go too in-depth on my process since otherwise we'll probably be here a while, but hey, maybe I can make it into a future video?

One story comes to mind which perfectly fits the bill and that is Pulley System by @reallybeth9. It's a Muggle AU where the two know each other since childhood.

Another one would be all my best lies by @remedialpotions. It's 6th year AU where Hermione asks Ron to be her fake boyfriend for a wedding.

These three I haven't read yet (at least not all of it) but they should also fit the bill:

This became a longer post than I thought, so I put the recs under the readmore line (I really hate long posts showing up in my time line).

Is your Ginny bubbly and not skinny? Just had a doubt after reading your new drabble.

Hi anon.

I know that many people, like me, suffer from body problems, so here's a disclaimer: Below, I'm talking about some body types and how I picture Ginny and Lily :)

I think Ginny has the body of an athlete. So she has a well-defined abdomen, stronger arms and legs, maybe even a more defined ass, strong shoulders (since she uses a lot of shoulder in quidditch) and I know that this is not the model body that society imposes for the female standard, so she was suffering from it in that drabble. She's still skinny because I don't think there's much to running away from it by making so much effort, but she has a slightly larger structure than maybe Hermione.

(because, I start from the principle that: there's no way you can be super thin, thin arms and legs, little butt and belly, if you're an athlete where you use your strength. if she is playing Quidditch she needs: the leg muscles, because she has to tense to keep her legs steady, the abdomen, because when you tense her legs, it tends to weigh on her lower back and she needs to compensate for that so she doesn't get hurt, so she tenses her abdomen, for that and for the game itself, since if she doesn't, in the first goal her lower back would be in tatters with the weight of the movement, her arms to be able to play the quaffle, and her shoulders for her didn't hurt the neck and because it helps keep the arm strong… ie. it's not possible that she doesn't have a body that doesn't allow her to do all that. she is an athletic woman, her body is an athlete's body)

But I imagine that after she stops playing, and after three children, she suffers some changes that obviously would happen normally because, a body changes during life

Unlike Lily, who I've written a few times being a person not so skinny as I usually see.

I don't know, I don't really like to think directly about how much each character weighs. That's a delicate subject for me, but I try to at least somehow put that not every character has a "flat stomach" because it's a bit tiring to read this in every fanfic and book.

Btw, a little detail: unless it's a translation error That I haven't seen, I'll never describe any of my female characters like that (with a flat stomach) because I have some problems with that kind of description 🙏

I don't try to "give real bodies" to my characters, in the fanfics or drawings, I just try to give the bodies that I believe they have, for their life and genetics. Ginny's an athlete, there's no way she's super skinny, in my conception. She needs strength, she needs her arms and shoulders for every move, she needs her leg to hold her firmly on the broom, and her abdomen strong so that her lower back is not damaged with all movements.

As for Lily, I don't think she was an athlete, not even before Harry, so I believe that after Harry, she had a different body than Ginny, because she didn't work out, the strength she needed to do things was different from the one Ginny used constantly in training… it makes sense?

Anyway, all this to say that I hardly describe women's bodies with this level of precision, because it's not at the time of writing fanfic that I want to think about my eating and image problems, unless I write directly about it.
