Tell us about the first fan fiction you wrote.

Oooh, I've got to go back nearly 20 years. High speed internet was still a relatively new thing, and I discovered online fandom. I'd been a Trekkie pretty much all of my life, but I had previously fangirled in solitude. I knew of fanzines and conventions, of course—dreamed of going to one someday when I had enough money (still do)—but aside from attending one in-person meeting, I'd never had anyone to squee with. Imagine just how exciting it was to find sites like Trekbbs and commiserate with other people who were as rabid as I had secretly been. Even more, as a young, stay-at-home mom, I suddenly had access to adult conversation that wasn't steeped in kids and parenting. It was a heady time.

When Star Trek: Enterprise aired its second episode of the fourth season, "Home," I fell headlong into the ship of these two idiots:

That episode broke me. I tiptoed into the Trip/T'Pol thread in the ENT forum, hoping to find that I wasn't the only one dying over what was happening between these two star-crossed lovers, and I discovered a whole new side of fandom: fanfiction! Back then, stories were generally archived on privately owned sites. Technically FFN existed, but no one in the TnT fandom used it. Our go-to site was the TripT'Polers corner of the House of Tucker. I devoured the stories. It was like reading Trek novels but catered specifically to my favorite pairing.

The site held challenges based on spoilers for upcoming episodes of ENT, and with encouragement from fellow fans, I decided to write a oneshot for the "Bound" challenge: The Beginning of Hope. A masterpiece it is not—nowhere close! But while the prose leaves something to be desired, that one story has led to over a hundred more in various fandoms. It's led to friendships that have lasted nearly two decades. It led me to a beta reader turned beloved best friend who has been integral to the writer I am today.

As someone who isn’t married I like having married friends so much because they absolutely (1000% understandably) are swallowed by their responsibilities and their work and their families in a way that unmarried people don’t where they just disappear for a bit and then they resurface like “life has been CRAZY here are 10 million things that have happened” and tbh it really is very steadying and kind of wonderful for me

thinking abt this tiktok i saw a while back where an older sister was making fun of her younger sister for insisting that dazai and chuuya bsd were just friends after watching dead apple and like.

while on the one hand i Get It and i ship skk with my whole life, on the other hand i was once a teenager who was really put off by the idea of romance in general but who nonetheless wanted to believe that someone could still love me with that kind of ferocity, and i really clung to those desperate best-friendships that crop up in so much media, and idk. sometimes i think when fandom belittles the possibility of "a platonic explanation for this" they are 1.) very much leaving aromantics out to dry and 2.) just. really limiting the scope of just how intense platonic love can be.

and also i mean. idk why everything always has to be either/or. you can ship a dynamic romantically and also enjoy them platonically you know. the two are not mutually exclusive. i do it all the time. really not hard. that's the nice thing about a little ambiguity.
