‘Why’re we here again?’ Chloe complained, following Callum through the side entrance of the Hadley residence. Already she was regretting tagging along with her twin, for once wishing she’d followed Jude’s example of staying at home. Deep down she knew she’d never have ignored their mother’s morning plea for help, but it helped her to groan about it all for a little while.

‘To help Mama,’ Callum said, the barest flicker of a smile on his face. ‘I thought you wanted to do that.’

‘I did,’ Chloe admitted, offering her bag for examination. ‘It’s just…’ She let the sentence fade as the security officer made sure that there were no offensive weapons in her possession.

Eventually, she took her things back and trotted to keep pace with Callum. The words of admittance weren’t something she could voice – not even to him. She didn’t want to be in the midst of a Cross party, least of all with everything that had happened. It was one thing to try fading into the background, to keep her head down. But here there’d be no choice. They’d always see her as something of a ghost, to simply be ignored; none of them would care that she and Callum had known Danny, none of them would spot the emotions they were barely holding in.

And then there were her concerns for their big brother. Did they really want him stewing on all things Danny without either of them tempering it in some way?

‘Tanya!’ A shrill chuckle drifted down from a window. Chloe recognised Sephy’s voice from other attempts to help their Mama when she needed it; odd days work where she could get it.

‘Don’t you like this look?’ another voice questioned, and Chloe forced herself back to the matter at hand.

‘The sooner tonight’s over the better,’ she said, smiling widely as she and Callum stepped into the entrance hall of the house. She just hoped this whole thing wasn’t going to be too much of an ordeal. Chloe wasn’t, however, about to hold her breath on that though.
