As a reminder that good exists out there, a coworker recently confessed to me that he found out his child is questioning their identity (kid's gender redacted for this post). The kid is keeping it from him, so he can't say anything to them or show that he knows, but he's doing his best to get mentally prepared and educated so that he'll be ready whenever his kid does feel comfortable enough come to him.

For context, this guy is a big, bulky middle aged dude who loves sports and typical outdoor "manly" activities. As his coworker and friend, I know he's a kind and sweet teddy bear of a person, but his kid probably views him as a stern, authoritarian figure, the way most teenagers view their parents. His family lives in a conservative area, so I'm sure between that, their dad's looks and interests, and the fact that their dad is a Figure of Authority, the kid is worried that they won't be accepted.

But you know what? When he found out about his kid, the first thing he did was reach out to his closest queer friend and ask for resources for parents of questioning children. His biggest fears are that his kid will be bullied or discriminated against and won't feel comfortable enough to be themself. His second action was to find himself a mentor in another parent who went the same situation (kid coming out in a conservative town). The other person is preparing him for some of the struggles his kid may face and the fights he may need to take on as a parent to make sure his kid is safe and treated well.

Something I want to emphasize for people focused on language as the primary method of allyship is that when we spoke, he used some outdated terms and thoughts about gender and sexuality. That does not make him bad. These were the terms and thinking used about questioning teenagers when he was growing up and he never needed to learn more current ones. But now that he does have that need, he's throwing himself in head first because that's his kid and he's darn well going to make sure that his kid feels welcomed and has a safe place to be themselves even if they never come out to him.

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. Someone post a Tiktok of Eddie and Steve clearly having their date interrupted by some fans of Eddie’s

Eddie is very obviously trying to be nice. He’s talking to them and taking pictures with them, but he’s also subtly trying to end this interaction. Steve, meanwhile, looks pissed.

The longer this conversation goes on, the more annoyed he looks until he takes a deep breath. He centers himself and then he burst into tears.

His whole body shakes when he sobs, “Eddie, what do you mean you want a divorce?!”

It takes over two hours for the person to post a part two where you can see Steve immediately stop crying when the fans awkwardly shuffle away.

Hiii!! Ufff I don't know how to tell you that I love your take on Floyd. like some bad bad life decisions were taken (THAT SO!!! INTERESTING FOR HIM). And OH he definitely feels so much shame and regret. I think a big part of why he fell as hard as he did was because he finally didn't have to be his brothers' mediator, and I guess at one point he forgot that he still needed to be the voice of reason for himself. His new band mates encouraging his reckless behavior didn't help. Honestly I personally think young Floyd was a very naive kid and very dependent on his older brothers but his strong empathy gave them all the impression that he was much more mature and independent than he really was...

So yeah... you can imagine that constantly partying, doing drugs and sleeping around wears someone down after a few years. I think Floyd also went gray like Branch (not for as long tho) and he broke up with the band wanting to go home badly, but he was also ashamed of showing his face after a number of years as a gray drug addict, so he kind of just ended up alone...

If we're sharing songs, I have to show you this one by Linkin Park because I think Floyd wrote it for Branch (and the rest of his family (and some parts also addressing himself)) while he was at that desperate and lonely period because I am also extremely emo

Satoru blinks and tries to rub his eyes. He huffs and walks towards the woman sitting on the bench, her white dress flows with the wind.

This can't be hell. No way you would wind down in hell. Then this must be the gap between death and afterlife.

Were the gods so merciful for them to give pity on him and let you meet him before he passes over?

Soft arms enveloped his tired soul. The caress he has longed for, stroked his hair followed by kisses being littered to his temples.

"Why are you here, Baby? This isn't a place for you."

Satoru opened his eyes and look at your smiling face as you brush his cheeks.

"You're supposed to be up there, Baby. Up with the living. Not here. Not with me." Satoru closed his eyes and curled towards you.

"Why not? I will accompany you even on death and the next life. I'm a clingy person Satoru." You pouted making his heart melt and rub the back of his head.

And after all of this and after all of that happened you're here with him.

"Let's go home Satoru? I can finally take you back home with me. We don't have to rush anymore, Love. We don't have to be constantly chasing life and death." You kissed his closed eyes. "You've worked so hard already, you've done your best and I'm so proud of you, but let's rest Satoru. Can we rest now?"

Satoru looked up to you and rubbed his face into your stomach. You shouldn't be here. He shouldn't be selfish but a part of him is really happy.

He is not alone. Against what he told his students that a sorcerer dies alone. But here you are. With him. It's a bittersweet pill he has to swallow but deep down he feels peace inside him as he stares at you.

"I want a kiss..."

A long smooch pressed to his forehead.

"I want a hug."

You chuckled and hugged him.

"I want to go home..."

"Then we'll go home together. You and me, Satoru. We'll rest for as long as we both need." You kissed his forehead one last time for now and stroked his hair, lulling him to sleep. When he wakes up you know you can do so many things together... limitless.
