Whenever I rewatch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel episode with Rufus Sewell in it, I’m instantly but unconsciously reminded of my great grandmother knowing poet Dylan Thomas.

So, Rufus spent some of his early life living in a converted pub, which was at one point a pub favoured by Thomas. This was in the small town of Laugharne in Carmarthenshire, Wales, a place known as the home of Dylan Thomas’ famous boathouse.

Anyway, seeing him on the show, I’m reminded of the fact that my great-grandmother knew Dylan Thomas at one point.

She lived about 10 miles away, in the same house she was born in and would later die in.

Somehow, they knew each other.

At some point in time, their paths crossed in Laugharne but unfortunately it did not go well. As she was who she was, no one knows exactly what happened or was said, as she was a very private woman but she did tell people, that she thought he was, cach (which is basically welsh for shit).

I’m aware I don’t know the great details of their acquaintances but this vague story I’ve had living in the back of my mind since I was little, came to the forefront at seeing the character of Declan Howell.

April has been another month like no other or me. My month was certainly defined by the continued development of spring a hopeful and joyful time of year I love noticing sights and signs of this every day, a packed Easter weekend and of course our phenomenal week in Pembrokeshire to end it having some of our most incredible wildlife experiences so far this year and ever and taking in some amazing landscapes. So much of the month especially around Easter and Pembrokeshire we had such stunning and brilliant weather. I have been pleased with the very high amount and variety of pictures I have taken this month.

It has been such an amazing birdwatching month for me, helped by big injections of year ticks during the Pembrokeshire holiday and Easter weekends I saw a huge amount of birds for this first time this year in April and amazingly my bird year list is strides ahead of how many I had seen at this time of year in previous years really breaking away from the amount I had seen at this stage during my two highest year lists in total 2019 and 2018. From Great Crested Grebes and Mallard ducklings at our local Lakeside, Cetti’s Warblers at Radipole at Easter and of course seeing birds such as Razorbill and Fulmar on Skomer and other parts of Pembrokeshire we have had some fantastic and very precious intimate moments with birds this month.

It’s been a fantastic butterfly month for me too with so many of the key spring species seen, from Dingy Skipper to Speckled Wood in the garden there have been some top moments seeing butterflies with some special species and my butterfly year has developed so well this month. Other insects and spiders have really played their part this month too, and it’s been a special month of mammals especially in the high points of the month in Pembrokeshire and over Easter. It’s been such a brilliant month of flowers too with the amazing contrast of the species that come out as we go into spring in Hampshire and at home being around and the really pleasantly surprising thing in Pembrokeshire for me of the flowers that I associate with late spring into summer being around which felt so good.

Now onto my bird of the month, a tough choice again especially after Pembrokeshire. I have gone for two again this month and once again they are two of my favourite birds, the Puffin and Osprey. The Puffin is the bird of the month for me that I saw consistently over those three days in and around Skomer Island as the figurehead bird of this trip and what we mostly first ever did it for, getting such intimate, varied and exciting views of this charming bird I adore. The Osprey shares my bird of the month title as the big single birding moment of my month, the exhilarating moment the one flew over us on Skomer on Tuesday which as I have said has been much talked about and was one of my favourite ever bird moments with a species I have a strong connection with and love so much. Chough has to lead a list of honourable mentions in my considerations for my birds of the month as we seen them exceptionally well and loads of times a key highlight of the amazing holiday. Other notable mentions for this month include Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler in a strong month of warblers for me, Wheatear, Dipper, Guillemot, Razorbill, Kittiwake, Fulmar and Manx Shearwater.
