New research finds a link between unclean cooking fuels like natural gas, propane, and wood and developmental delays in children. Researchers looked at indoor air pollution exposure and early childhood development in a sample of more than 4,000 mother-child pairs in the United States. “Exposure to unclean cooking fuel and passive smoke during pregnancy and in early life are associated with developmental delays in children,” says Alexandra Grippo, first author of the study in the journal Environmental Research. “While cigarette smoke is known to be harmful during pregnancy, cooking fuel may not be viewed the same way,” says Grippo, who worked on the study while pursuing her master’s in epidemiology in the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the University at Buffalo.

this guy gave his pregnant wife an abortion drug against her knowledge and now a baby girl has health complications. he only got sentenced to 180 days which is far less than what republicans want to sentence women to for having abortions under any circumstances. but they’ll still keep claiming that abortion bans are about 🥺 protecting the children 🥺 rather than punishing women

I love your work I got a request for Tommy Shelby
So you are tommy daughter or the youngest Shelby sister and u are 2 years old
And Arthur or John or Finn is looking after u and u get sick and tommy’s not home at the moment so she just cries until he gets home no matter how hard the others try to console her and then when he gets home and he holds you stop crying and fell asleep hope that make sense
Hey love! Of course i can do this request for you!
I DO NOT GIVE PERMISSION FOR TRANSLATION OR POSTING ON A DIFFERENT SITE.
Summary: request above.
{Y/N}: Your name.
Word count: 1,023.
Once Finn was born, the Shelby clan felt like the family was complete, they hoped their parents would stop having children since they were barely looked after by them.
However, just under two years after Finn Shelby was born, [Y/N] Shelby entered the world. The second daughter of Arthur Shelby and youngest sister to the Shelby brothers.
Since she was born, she had a handful of health issues, ranging from constant illnesses to developmental delays. This caused her to look younger then she is and resulted in Polly becoming very cautious of going outside with the young girl. When [Y/N} was taken outside, Tommy and Polly would make sure she had on at least three layers.
However, the winter had been brutal on the young girls body, it had snowed for the first time in ten years in Birmingham, and like any other child {Y/N} wanted to go outside and play with the the playful swirling snowflakes coming down from the sky. Polly knew it wasn't safe but the young girl was growing and seeing snow in Birmingham was a rare occasion. She let {Y/N] go outside for ten minutes.
Two days later, Polly had regretted that decision. Polly had woken up that morning expecting the young girl to be awake in her bed waiting for her aunt to take her downstairs to make her breakfast. Instead Polly had found her niece still asleep curled up in her bed, from where Polly was standing she was able to see {Y/N]'s skin glistening with sweat.
The middle aged woman immediately walks away from the child's room, going to Tommy's room and knocks on loudly, knowing her nephew would be awake, Polly opens the door " get dressed and go to the doctor down the road" she demands.
Tommy stood up quickly, puling on a pair of his tailored trousers then followed by putting on a shirt " {Y/N] again?" he asks, he knew it was for his sister but asked anyway.
" i don't know whats wrong with her yet" Polly uttered, her voice full of stress and panic.
Polly rushes back over to her nieces room, walking over to the young girls bed, wrapping her arms around the fragile body of her ill riddled body of the youngest Shelby.
{Y/N} small mouse like voice breaks out from her throat "pol" she whispers, her voice cracking, squirming slightly. The young girl was uncomfortable, the warmth from her fever coming through in bursts, her night clothes soaked in her own sweat.
The sound of Tommy leaving his room followed by the sound of the front door opening and close less then a minute later reassured Polly that help would soon be on the way.
Three hours later.
It had been hours since Tommy had left the house, he had not come back. {Y/N]'s fever had gotten worse as the hours past, Polly had given her several cold water baths to try and bring her fever down but nothing was helping.
The sickly young girl had become distressed, her wailing voice filed the small Shelby home. Her brothers and aunt doing everything they could think of to comfort her.
" Don't hold her like that Finn, that will just make her more upset" the eldest Shelby brother barked at his youngest brother.
Finn was holding his sister under armpits and arms length away from him. " shes contagious"
Arthur grumbles and stands up from the dinning room table, stalking towards his siblings, taking his sister gently from the arms of his brother. " You're a Shelby Finn, you've got other things you should be more scared of" Arthur points out.
The eldest Shelby, holds his sister, his hand on the bottom of her back whilst his other arm sat under her legs to support her weight, The young girl lays her head on her brothers shoulder hiccuping as she cries.
" where is bloody Tommy" Arthur grumbles, looking towards Polly as she walks out of the kitchen holding a cloth. The older woman walks over to Arthur, gently wiping the cold cloth against the forehead of the sickly looking child.
" He's coming Arthur, doctor is probably busy with other children sick from this weather"
" Other children aren't {Y/N} pol, she could di--" Polly quickly interrupts Arthur.
" don't be ridiculous Arthur" Polly hissed.
However, Arthur wasn't wrong and Polly knew this, her niece was already weak from birth and the doctor had warned the family that {Y/N} could die from becoming ill, its just the matter of what will kill her and when.
Luckily, the sound of the front door opening and shutting filled the chaotic family home of the Shelby's. Footsteps clunking towards the room filled with hiccups, coughs and wailing.
The sight of Tommy Shelby was a relief for Polly but when she didn't see the doctor her stress levels turned up a notch. Tommy takes his cap off followed by his jacket.
Tommy walks over to his older brother, Arthur transferring his sister over to him " the doctor will come in a few hours, he is full today with other patients" Tommy explains.
Polly runs her slender fingers over her eyebrows, sighing " her fever isn't breaking Tommy, shes making herself worse by crying" his aunt vents.
The sight of the most feared Shelby rocking his youngest sister as she holds one of his fingers wasn't a rare sight for the family, since {Y/N} was born it was clear her and Tommy had bonded incredibly quick and nothing could break that bond.
The house slowly began to become quiet, the occasional hiccup and cough appeared, Tommy sits on the couch, his sister slowly closing her eyes, her body relaxing for the first time since the morning.
Polly laughs and shakes her head, putting her hands on her hips. " i should have known" she smiles.
Finn frowns and looks towards Polly " known what?" he asks, oblivious.
Polly grabs a cigarette from her metal case and uses a match to light it, then sits down at the dinning room table for the first time since waking up.
" All she wanted was her Thomas".
A/N: Hello again, i apologise for the long wait for this, life has been hectic and i had no time to post anything but i finally have time to post on here! i appreciate all the Reposts, Likes and Comments.

this is my hot occultism take - theres not anything inherently wrong with the concept of indigo children. as long as the kid is getting actual help for Whatever (ADHD, autism, developmental delays, etc) i think framing it for them as a unique joy instead of a failure/defect by encouraging them to cosplay a changeling or a space alien or whatever is probably fine
Bad take. Dehumanization can include putting people on a pedestal.

Alucard as a Dad
Tumblr media
Request: I really liked the pregnancy fiction, can you do one for Alucard as a dad?
Summary: He knows her, knows her even more intimately than himself. A sigh of relief escapes him, and a genuine smile graces his face, erasing any lingering hesitance from his tumultuous past.
AN: I tried ;) (Dividers by @chachachannah- thanks!)
Please read this before continuing-Part 1 (It makes sense I swear)
Tumblr media
With quivering hands and a resolute expression, Adrian cradles your daughter for the first time. A quick glance in your direction unsures he's handling everything correctly.
Yet, the moment her delicate weight settles in his arms, an understanding dawns upon him. He knows her, knows her even more intimately than himself. A sigh of relief escapes him, and a genuine smile graces his face, erasing any lingering hesitance from his tumultuous past.
The unadulterated happiness that courses through him sweeps away all uncertainties. "Narya," he addresses her by name, and your daughter meets his gaze, her tiny lips curving into a response that mirrors his smile.
She carries his resemblance remarkably, with scattered tufts of golden hair and shimmering, golden eyes. Yet, her toothless grin belongs entirely to you. The slight dimple on her chin is a charming legacy from her mother.
The first time you bring Narya to Castle Dracula, the three of you embark on a memorable project. You collectively paint your footprints on a massive sheet of paper, an endeavor that involves both you and Adrian fluttering around a squirming Narya to capture her tiny foot imprints.
In no time, he compensates for every missed moment during your pregnancy. Tired arms from holding the baby? Alucard steps in. Need a restroom break? No problem, Alucard is already at Narya's side. Late-night bouts of pacifying your daughter's cries? Adrian is there, soothing her before you even stir from your sleep.
From tending to a slight fever to ensuring a delayed burp, Adrian, despite being her father, becomes the quintessential mother hen to your daughter.
You willingly grant Adrian the time to bond with his daughter, to acquaint himself with her unique essence. You, on the other hand, have known her existence from the very moment it dawned upon you.
Your baby, a blend of both dhampir and human, bears a predominantly human appearance, with the exception of her luminous eyes and slightly lower body temperature. Her growth mirrors the developmental stages you've observed in countless other children around you.
Yet, within the secret corners of your thoughts, you harbor a desire for her to inherit more from her father. You yearn for her to possess the gift of immortality, akin to Adrian. This longing stems from your wish to leave behind someone for Adrian when your own time inevitably wanes – a constant presence to anchor him in the world.
One late afternoon, as you gently pry open the door to your bedroom, a heartwarming scene greets you: your daughter slumbers serenely atop your husband's chest. Her tiny hands grasp his shirt, finding security in his embrace. Adrian's arms cradle her with tenderness, and what takes you aback is the genuine, tranquil smile adorning his face in his slumber. This smile, free from the habitual furrow of his brow or the weight of his recurring nightmares, fills your heart with a renewed sense of hope.
In that moment, you find yourself fervently praying for her immortality more fervently than ever before. It's not just a wish for her own well-being, but a yearning to ensure that Adrian's happiness.
Castle Dracula becomes livelier with your daughter's presence. Her giggles and Adrian's baby voice ring loud from whatever room father and daughter decide to grace.
And if you walk in on your daughter cuddling into a large wolf or clapping around a party of bats you join the party. Winking at the wolf as you jump into the cuddle pile.
There are days when Alucard holds your daughter and for hours talks to the pictures of her grandparents. Both Lisa and Dracula get to meet her.
Matilda, Ronnie, Bowie, and Pink are all dolls made by Alucard for your daughter. Each given a special feature and leaves your daughter a giggling mess. Be it Bowie's squeaking noise or Pink's flapping hands.
On nights when your daughter sleeps peacefully and the world lulls into silence. Adrian turns to you and lays bare his vulnerability. All the sorrow and gratitude is expressed in quiet whispers. Tears and reassurances hold you both together.
He does not easily forgive himself for his abandonment of you during your pregnancy and it shows up during lively family dinner, story times, or nap times. But you do not allow him to spiral. Holding him close you lean in and tickle your dhampir until his booming laughter fills the room.
Both uncle Trevor and Aunt Sypha undergo the regular mandatory Narya bragging session by Alucard either in person or through letters. It doesn't surprise you that your daughter take a liking to the Belmont sooner than anyone else. "She is just compensating for his lack of intellect," your husband ads trying not to scowl at Trevor. "Haven't you heard opposites attract? My daughter just finds you stupidity funny." Neither Trevor nor Narya turn back from their conspiring whispers to reply to your annoyed husband. He does get a sympathy shoulder pat from you.
Three years later, with Narya's fist wrapped around your finger you enter the healer's hut again. Only to find the news of Narya's sibling on the way.
And this time your pregnancy is spent in Castle Dracula, next to Alucard, who takes in every detail. He spends weeks waiting for the bump to show, and nights after that talking to it.
The child inside you definitely recognizes his voice, because any indication of Adrian's presence leads to a very active march in your belly.
Alucard does not shy away from indulging in your pregnancy cravings. Pickles with jam? That's his jam now. He will join you to chug pickle juice straight from the jar.
He is however, very much concerned about the morning sickness bouts. Entirety of Dracula's library is turned over to find a cure but the child inside of you is as stubborn as his father.
Both you and Alucard burst laughing the sight of Narya mimicking your pregnancy waddle.
When the labor starts you find yourself next to Alucard again. Your hand clutched in his and your breath coming heavy. You push for an hour before your sons enter the world. Surprising everyone.
You give birth to twins bearing your and Adrian's features. Narya becomes an elder sister.

So, if you want to understand the history of ND stuff in any useful kind of way you have to know that we talked about these things differently. Gen Xrs have a different generational experience and Boomers' is different still.
Prior to the 80s, NDs were really not a thing. The optic was almost entirely in terms of learning disability and intellectual impairment in the 70s.
ADHD - not autism - is really the first we see of anything resembling the modern ND consciousness, as "autistic" was a label reserved for children presenting with severe disability or at minimum, delay.
Autism in the 70s and 80s and before was not culturally adjacent to ADHD or giftedness, it was adjacent to conditions of severe intellectual impairment.
It's possible to be an 80s ADHD labeled autistic who gets good interventions *because lots of how ADHD was understood at the time, got absorbed by autism later.*
This is basically my story as a matter of fact, a lot of helpful support I got early was via the ADHD pipeline, and so ADHD *is* my "recognized early enough to get meaningful self understanding and meaningful support* narrative, which is a big reason I was ABLE to shrug off autism as a label for about 15 years, until the changing autism stereotypes caught up with me.
ADHD and early issues with visible LD etc are WHY I didn't end up in the "normal until hospitalized" optic that some autistics I knew ended up in, if they had *only* been seen as gifted. I was very aware of my stuff very early even if it was called something else and even if it will be called something else in the future, and it shaped my social choices, my career choices, etc.
Also there was the optic to Boomers and older that you really could just be a "normal" person or even a high performing "genius" who was just "a little slow as a kid." (There are many historical figures this actually applies to. "A little slow as a kid" may just be within a *normal* range of child development.) This is actually part of where many Boomers are coming from when they think a certain degree of autism is just normal.
Early labels in adults (whom we would now understand as high masking ASD-1) were more personal history than identity.
To Boomers and older, you were "mentally well" until you presented "mentally ill." There really wasn't anything like being ND as we presently understand. Also, the *very same optics* that got boys seen as gifted, invested lots of time and support into, etc, got girls into the clinical pipeline early. The real dx discrepancy between girls and boys in my generation and older is the degree to which cis het white rich boys were just allowed to not be anything at all while girls were immediately tagged as mentally ill or developmentally disabled with the very same presentation, even within the same family. My grandmother who was a victim of this, and heavily and deeply abused from early childhood, is the sister of my physicist uncle who was on the Manhattan Project and was odd but successful, had a wife and family, never labeled anything at all.
Lots of people we now see as autistic were just considered normal gifted people who then had a "nervous breakdown" after high school/entering the adult world.
It was possible to be totally ego-syntonic as an odd person until diagnosis, if you were in the 80s gifted pipeline, because if you were in a social set that was actually ALLOWED to be intelligent let alone gifted in the first place (i.e., an upper middle class person, with more weirdness optic allowed for boys) you likely weren't going to be diagnosed with ANYTHING unless you were Weird with a Capital W.
That I had any kind of optic besides just being Gifted is *because* despite high IQ, I was a poor academic performer, and *couldn't* mask well inside a school setting.
These are people without even that optic.
They literally were just seen as gifted, and it was assumed that - of course - highly gifted people were a little weird. Gifted optic in school meant access to a whole different social and academic pipeline consisting hugely of other people we would now understand as ND, so it's actually possible to come out of that being totally ego-syntonic, and never ever even seek diagnosis until something breaks.
If you're like my ex husband who ended up just going away to sea for years, and then becoming a programmer in a basement at a university, you might never get diagnosed with anything, especially if you never see yourself as the problem in any of your interpersonal interactions, and that was a FAR more common optic with gifted white Gen X and Jones ASD-1 boys than early dx was.
The thing for my generation isnt the degree to which boys were diagnosed over girls... quite the opposite, it's the degree to which smart white rich boys were just *allowed* to be odd and given tons of concessions *without* being labeled ANYTHING, because of the degree to which the culture saw that boy was probably a future curer of cancer or a future astronaut.
A chunk of the "NT [more likely, high masking autist] woman miserably married to ASD man" narrative on those websites like FAAAS is actually referring to men who don't have any diagnostic label whatsoever and don't understand themselves as the problem, if you actually read the stories.
Those guys don't get diagnosed until something actually breaks - like, their wife hauls them into couples counseling, or they have finally exhausted their supply of good will (many social compensations of gifted children stop working past one's 20s and that's actually when my dx happened too).
Interpersonal problems weren't enough for dx unless they actually bothered a person enough to seek help. Something has to break. You don't end up with a diagnosis because you're happy and adjusted, no matter how odd you are.
Please ask Boomers about nervous breakdowns because half the time this is referring to what we now understand as autistic burnout.

I saw your tags on the post about trick or treaters not speaking and I am v interested in hearing more of your thoughts on the concept of “developmental delays”! I‘ve seen the idea that disability is a construct, but I’m not as familiar with the idea that development is also a construct. You have really great takes as an educator and someone who like, actually GETS how kids work, so I am interested in your thoughts!
I also know that posting on this subject might be poking the bear, so it is 1000% cool if you would rather not comment 💜 Tysm!
Oh I'm happy to talk about it! I love talking about this stuff, thank you for asking me to 💙
This isn't exactly new ground; there's been plenty of research into and writing on the subject, and deconstructing "development" as a static concept was, ironically, a huge part of my most recent development class.
The idea is that our understanding of "benchmarks" of development, which informs the larger concept of development as a whole, is heavily rooted in the assumption that Western culture is The Standard. We prioritize walking, talking, reading, and writing, which means we cultivate these skills in our children from a young age, which means they develop those skills more quickly than they do others.
To use one of my favorite examples from Rogoff, 2003, Orienting Concepts and Ways of Understanding the Cultural Nature of Human Development:
Although U.S. middle-class adults often do not trust children below about age 5 with knives, among the Efe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, infants routinely use machetes safely (Wilkie, personal communication, 1989). Likewise, Fore (New Guinea) infants handle knives and fire safely by the time they are able to walk (Sorenson, 1979). Aka parents of Central Africa teach 8- to 10-month-old infants how to throw small spears and use small pointed digging sticks and miniature axes with sharp metal blades: "Training for autonomy begins in infancy. Infants are allowed to crawl or walk to whatever they want in camp and allowed to use knives, machetes, digging sticks, and clay pots around camp. Only if an infant begins to crawl into a fire or hits another child do parents or others interfere with the infant’s activity. It was not unusual, for instance, to see an eight month old with a six-inch knife chopping the branch frame of its family’s house. By three or four years of age children can cook themselves a meal on the fire, and by ten years of age Aka children know enough subsistence skills to live in the forest alone if need be. (Hewlett, 1991, p. 34)" (pg. 5)
Tumblr media
In the US we would view "letting an 8-month-old handle a knife" as a sign of severe neglect, but the emphasis here is placed on the fact that these children are taught to do these things safely. They don't learn out of necessity, or stumble into knives when nobody is watching; they learn with care, support, and safety in mind, just like children here learn. It makes me wonder if Aka parents would view our children's lack of basic survival skills with the same concern and disdain as USAmerican parents would view their children's inability to read.
Do we disallow our children from handling knives because it is objectively, fundamentally unsafe for a child of that age to do so- because even teaching them is developmentally impossible- or is that just a cultural assumption?
What other cultural assumptions do we have about child development?
Which ties in neatly with various social-based models of disability, particularly learning and, of course, developmental disabilities. If your culture doesn't value the things you are good at, and you happen to struggle with the things it does value, what kinds of assumptions is it likely to make about you? How will it pathologize you? What happens to that culture if it understands those values to be arbitrary, in order to accommodate your unique existence?

i think in general, it would be nice for the agere community to remember that age regression is primarily associated with abused or traumatized children as both a natural coping mechanism and a reflection of developmental delays
and this is to say that everyone can regress, absolutely, but please have more kindness for regression being difficult for many. for a while now regressors like us have been thrown under terms like impure, vent, trauma, etc. and have been shoved out of tags and sent a message that our regression is secondary to the happy go lucky soft baby regression people want to see
and its fine if thats what you want. just have some compassion in your heart for the kids who are struggling. maybe your inner child is, too. for DID/OSDD littles who only exist because of trauma and often are dealing with a horrific reality.
regression IS difficult, upsetting, traumatizing, dysfunctional. it is also happy, fun, safe, rewarding. all of these things are true of regression and we dont need to separate it semantically. if you dont want to see the kids who are hurting, maybe unpack why that is. and if youre hurting, youre not impure or whatever other term people come up with to section you off with
love yourselves and others in turn, and it'll make for a better community :}
