The Secret Origin of Wally ManMoth
Scans from TyrannoMax #26
Cocytus was one of the better-performing comic companies outside the big 2 in the 1970s before the whole company was bought out by Buzby-Spurlock Animation in the early 80s.
TyrannoMax was its biggest title, so almost everyone in the character stable teamed up with the Dinoids eventually.
Process under the fold.
TyrannMax is created via use of Dall-E 3 and Midjourney as pencilers, and me doing essentially everything else (writing, editing, inking, lettering, layout, etc.) DE is on most of the character art, MJ on backgrounds and select characters.
Each panel utilizes anywhere from one gen/prompt (for a handful of very simple head-shots) to around 20 for stuff like the DinoHydra action shot or the hero/villain showcase panels.
Once I know what I want for a page I lay out the rough dialog and panels, then start generating pics. Basic prompt format and a few examples:
, , , , comic panel by 1968, in the style of 1968
A portly 50 year old man, resembles Alan Hale Jr, jolly smile, wearing a tweed jacket, slacks, sandals, a fedora, sweatervest and a loosened ascot, full body character design, comic panel by Jack Kirby and Alex Toth 1968, in the style of 1968 Marvel comics
a mad scientist mid-transformation into a green anthro-tyrannosaurus, asymmetrical transformation, boils and growths, screaming/roaring, bald, portly, with round glasses. wearing a tattered lab coat, vest, slacks, tie. Comic panel by jack kirby and alex toth, 1968, in the style of vintage horror comics
Then I take the pics into PS, arrange and composite them, and then remove all the color. I don't tend to prompt for my final colors on characters and instead choose light tones I can easily extract. Why not just do B&W prompts? Style impact.
Then I start to re-ink over errors and details that don't match the mood I want, match line thicknesses over various elements, etc. Through this process I adjust dialog placement and panel arrangements, and do generally the things and editor and letterer would be up to.
Once I have the inks, flat colors, and the text on various layers, I do the weathering and compositing to simulate scans of a 1970s comic book. This is also where the deliberate flaws in coloring and print alignment are added for authenticity.

Solomon, no...
comic + short drabble under the cut!
Tumblr media
he asked to help at the wrong time dw peepaw Aren will let you help cook someday mkay? just not immediately after you used their tea set as containers for your potions this is how things are in Cocytus Hall
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
His precious apprentice looks adorable with the apron and knife but Solomon knows they mean business. Aren has a surprisingly deadly aim. That kitchen knife could be a projectile if he were to keep teasing them. He tried his luck one last time with a pout but they had already started chopping away.
Grumbling, removed the apron and draped it on his arm. It wasn't even the cooking apron. That one was white and on the peg by the shelf. The "WORLD'S GREATEST COOK SORCERER" apron was what Solomon used for potion making. Yes, he was in the middle of potion work when he heard Aren come back from grocery shopping in time to make dinner. What kind of mentor would he be if he didn't assist his apprentice?
But said apprentice banned him from cooking for a while.
He leans against the doorframe and watches Aren wash the vegetables. "Can you lift my ban for a little bit? I want to help you cook my favorite.”
“Solomon, my favorite tea set is stained. I’ll stop being upset when you fix it. Why did you even use it for potion making in the first place?” There was a slight pout to their voice. They gave him a look before getting a bowl from the cupboard. Aren had to hop to get the one they needed and Solomon can’t help but chuckle. They flipped him off.
“That was adorable,” Solomon admits with a laugh. “Very well. I’ll leave the kitchen in your care until your tea set is all right.”

Meet Mrs. Natalie Nice...
Tumblr media
Natalie is a hard worker in one of today's high-end scientific fields. Why, her boss wouldn't know where the test tubes were kept if not for her tireless efforts! Well, not quite tireless...
She's quite tired. Mrs. Nice has been burning the candle at both ends to impress the boss, and she's about to make a terrible mistake because of it.
Can you spot the mistake Mrs. Nice is making?
Tumblr media
That's right! Carelessness in the workplace has consequences!
That wasn't coffee! (good) Coffee doesn't glow green!
Tumblr media
Whoopsie! Now Mrs Nice is Mrs. Naughty...lus! Nautilus.
And Mrs. Nautilus is not happy!
Tumblr media
By not watching what she was doing Natalie has wasted her whole lunch break turning herself into an abomination of science. All without noting dosage, temperature, and other important factors, not to mention completely circumventing the double blind protocol. Her data is completely invalid for the larger project.
Don't be a Mrs. Nautilus, be a Mrs. Nice! Remember:
Take regular breaks, get plenty of rest, and-
-If the Goo's Alight, it's Not alright!
Drinking glowing goo is the 1% cause of monsterism in adults ages 18-35, please science responsibly, a message from your friends at Cocytus Comics.
Each pic used a different prompt around the basic format of:
Secretary with a bob-haircut, redhead, green blouse and pearls, , , comic panel by Jack Kirby and Alex Toth, 1968, in the style of 60s Marvel
a secretary with lavender skin, tentacles for hair, , , comic panel by jack kirby and alex toth, 1968, in the style of 60s marvel

Every Greek mythology reference (that I can remember) in Plague Doctor
Plague Doctor seems to be loading up on Greek myth-themed villains, a development I am absolutely PSYCHED about. Here’s all the references I’ve spotted so far. There are almost certainly more to come!
Charon
The mortician got his nickname from the ferryman who takes the souls of the dead over the rivers Styx and Acheron.
Cerberus
The mortician’s three assistants cast the shadow of Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades, on the wall.
Hecate
Poet has the strophalos, or wheel, of Hecate on his chest. Hecate has some complicated symbolism and she’s often associated with the underworld and the souls of the dead. She plays a part in the Persephone myth. Poet has a ring showing the phases of the moon, and he looks at the moon when his powers are failing; Hecate is associated with the moon.
As a side note, she’s often depicted as triple-bodied. Groups of three keep popping up in this story, and three guys who are back from the dead are big players in this arc.
Pomegranates
Vladimir’s dream about the dead includes pomegranates. In the Persephone myth, Hades tricks Persephone by giving her pomegranate seeds to eat, forcing her to remain part-time in the underworld.
Aphrodite
Sergey has a fascination with Botticelli's Birth of Venus, his most famous painting. This was established way before Plague Doctor was written, so I’m not sure if they were laying the groundwork for a mythology theme this early. There could be some other thematic reason they chose the painting (like: Venus is "born” without parents, in a way that would be appealing to an orphan), or they might have been trying to drop some other hint about Sergey as a character (a lot of scholars believe Botticelli was gay).
Athena
The woman with white hair who’s working with Rubenstein seems to be named Athena. Athena’s a goddess who’s significant to whole lot of things the ancient Greeks valued, so I’m not sure yet what this is a specific reference to: wisdom, war, we’ll have to wait and see. She has some kind of tree-related business; a big Athena myth is about giving olive trees to Athens. Her earrings aren’t specifically Greek-style mati but are probably an evil eye reference (there’s a LOT of eye symbolism in the comic).
Sergey also goes to the museum to see a Botticelli painting of Pallas Athena.
Machaon
A leader in the Trojan War story and a famous medic. The swallowtail butterfly, papilio machaon, is named after him. No clue whether this is a deliberate mythology reference, just generally related to the butterfly motif, or some other reference (Lera’s blue bird outfit with the slit down the back does look a lot like a swallow’s tail).
The Rivers
The Rivers characters in Igor Grom are named after 4 of the 5 rivers of Hades: Styx, Archeron, Phlegethon, and Cocytus.
The missing river, Lethe, is the river of forgetfulness. That might or might not be plot-significant, considering how often partial amnesia or a character forgetting their own identity has popped up in the story.
Vadim and Alan’s history references
Vadim is reading an academic book about medieval depictions of the Trojan War in the car before the shooting at the casino. Disguised enemies popping out to commit a massacre has a Trojan horse vibe.
Vadim reports in after the massacre by making a reference to killing the Nemean lion.
Altan turns into Medusa in Lera’s dream sequence.
Not sure yet/things to keep an eye on
Chrysalis is talking about souls as butterflies when he tries to explain his plan to free people to Igor.  Butterflies are associated with Psyche, goddess of the soul, who has some coming back from death stuff going on in her story.
It’s too early to tell, but keep an eye out for Orpheus and Eurydice references, since that’s another extremely popular myth about bringing someone back from the dead.
Chrysalis has some symbolism associated with Heracles (super strength, lions, killing people in a frenzy he later regrets, taking a trip to Hades and coming back) but that could be a coincidence.
Poet and the other mental patient who was reciting poetry maybe dropped some classical allusions. It’s a little difficult to find searchable translations of Russian poems in English so I probably missed something there.

Aight, so this would probably be much clearer if I read the comics, but I must say - out of these River guys, each one of them reminds me of some water animal. Phlegethon reminds me of some kind of frog/lizard, Styx is definitely an eel, Cocytus seems like a piranha, and Acheron has vibes like he could be a catfish (the literal fish; I’m most uncertain about him, for the others I’m fairly confident about this). This was most likely intentional, and could very well be something that was stated but I don’t know because I haven’t read it yet x) sorry if I translated their names wrong, I’m not sure how it was translated.

Minthe's myth states when Hades married Persephone, it didn't go well between the 2 woemen and Percy killed Minthe by trampling her and turned her into a plant (classic greek mythology !). Personally I imagine your Percy hearing this story from dead human and she'd say :"Whaaat ! Sure,we fought over the same guy and I beated the hell's out of her ! But not to the point to stomp her to death !!!"
There seems to be two variants of the myth of Minthe, one where Persephone turns her into mint and one where Demeter does it.
"Near Pylus, towards the east, is a mountain named after Minthe, who, according to myth, became the concubine of Hades, was trampled under foot by Core, and was transformed into garden-mint, the plant which some call Hedyosmos." Strabo, Geography 8.3.14, translated by H. L. Jones.
"Mint, men say, was once a maid beneath the earth, a Nymph of Cocytus, and she lay in the bed of Aidoneus; but when he raped the maid Persephone from the Aetnaean hill, then she complained loudly with overweening words and raved foolishly for jealousy, and Demeter in anger trampled her with her feet and destroyed her. For she had said that she was nobler of form and more excellent in beauty than dark-eyed Persephone and she boasted that Aidoneus would return to her and banish the other from his halls: such infatuation leapt upon her tongue. And from the earth sprang the weak herb that bears her name." Oppian, Halieutica 3. 485 ff, translated by A. W. Mair.
No explicit reason is given for Persephone's anger in the first version (it could be the same as in the second version, or that she simply didn't approve of Hades having a concubine), but in the version with Demeter Minthe commits the classic crime of hubris.
Anyway, I have almost regretted that I included her in my comics, because I'm still not sure what to do with her. I'd rather avoid the trope of two women fighting over a man, so I'm leaning more towards letting Demeter destroy her, but I don't know... I'm also tempted to just leave her out from the rest of the story.

Classic Comic Villains: The Unnatural Selector
Pinup scan from TyrannoMax #21, Cocytus Comics, 1977
Born in a lost corner of the cosmos, the cosmic demigod known as the Unnatural Selector has but one driving concern: life and its propagation. For millions of years he has wandered the cosmos, transplanting populations and terraforming worlds to seed life in new corners of space and in his time-accelerated Genesis Engines, where he can study evolution in all its forms.
Part of this study is the "Tournament of Life," a cruel experiment where champions of a given world face a series of deadly trials and battles against disasters and the Selector's prized monstrosities. The biospheres of those that fail are scoured in a mass extinction event.
The Unnatural Selector was a regular foe of TyrannoMax, and showed up in several Cocytus Comics titles including Johannes Factotum: Professor of Practically Everything, True Life Tales of Science Fiction, and Barton's Mix-Ups!
-
A little sneak peek of a panel from an upcoming multi-page TyrannoMax comic I'm working on, reworked into a pinup. Bonus points if you can guess what the Selector is an anthro of (its not an animal, exactly.)
The Selector is a heavy edit, the main components of which are here.
As with most of my Tyrannomax stuff, the images are first composited, then reverted back to B&W lines, edited and inked, before being recolored from scratch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I accidentally saved over the unedited background image, and Dall-E 3 is bad at archival.
I probably won't be going into this kind of detail on my process for the full pages, because this here is just one panel.
The Selector is a character concept I've had for awhile, this is just the first time I solidified a visual concept. A mysterious space god with a taste for trials and tournaments is a classic comic villain archetype, after all, and the evolution-obsessed villain fits nicely with dinosaur characters.
Might do a whole Coctyus Character Catalogue entry for him if the druthers hit me.
Prompts:
A cobra standing on a chunk of rock floating in in the cosmic void, it is reared up, threatening, facing toward the viewer, comic panel by jack kirby and john byrne, 1977, angled view
a cosmic nebula in the vague shape of a DNA double helix, comic inks by jack kirby, 1968, trippy, in the style of syd mead
A robed creature stands, one hand outstretched, palm up, toward the camera, he has a lion's head with a mane made of green flames, wearing cosmic-tech gauntlets, imposing, mysterious, foreboding, standing on a rock floating in the starry void, wide stance, standing tall, comic panel by jack kirby and wally wood, 1968, in the style of 1960s marvel comics, eerie cosmic coloration, wide angle, full body. The mood is dramatic.

Who's your fav Overlord character?
I really like Sebas cause him being like, +1,000,000 karmic good in a guild full of needlessly evil monsters is pretty amusing and also a good change of pace since characters like Shalltear and Demiurge honestly get on my nerves at this point.
There’s also Entoma, but I just really like her design. There’s not much to her character besides being hungry.
Albedo is also really amusing despite being one of the more evil ones. Plus she has some depth to her that I think only starts to get touched on at the end of this season.
Oh and I’m a huge fan of Enri, cause she kinda parallels the more likable parts of Ainz, that is, continually stumbling into greater and greater success despite their best efforts.
I like Cocytus too, mostly cause he’s comically serious all the time.
Runner up would be the Blue Roses, collectively. They’re pretty interesting.

TryannoMax, Issue 25, October 1977
Cocytus Comics Group, Story by Barry McDermit, lines by Midge Joulet & Dale Ethree, Colors and Letters by H. Haddaway.
Issue #25. It's a quiet day so the Core team gets some R&R. TryannoMax hunts down Dr. Underfang for a long-overdue confrontation, DeinoSteve and PteroDarla finally have that date, and Wally Manmoth visits home. So when Ape-Tomic Pyle returns from the grave to exact his revenge, only TriceraBruce remains to stand in his way. One wounded dinoid against a living nuclear ape-pocalypse, with the populace of Wisconsin in the balance.
Running for an astounding 80 issues, TyrannoMax was the headline comic from Cocytus in the 1970s, and was the primary motivator behind Buzby-Spurlock buying out Cocytus in '83.
While the comic series is considered the root of the empire that would create the animated series and live action movie, the concept was first introduced in short story "Humanity, My Young Cousin" in the pulp-sci-fi magazine Stunning True-Life Tales of Science Fiction, a few years earlier.
May be posting interior pages soon.
Full details under the fold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TyrannoMax is my AI dinosaur test kitchen, where I see how ideas work out before trying them on more serious projects.
Here, I've used Dall-E 3 through Bing and Midjourney to create comic assets, which I then de-color and rework into inks in a similar fashion to my AI-comic reworkings like Robots Ruined the Internet and Let's Gib About Ib, or any of my other fake comic covers. TriceraBruce and Ape-Tomic Pyle were generated with Dall-E 3, and the background was made in Midjourney.
This makes the basic inks, from there I correct anatomical problems, cleanup AI wonk, and generally re-ink where things are needed.
Once I have the "inks" its then a matter of doing the coloring and graphic design work the old fashioned way. I used my recreation of the 1981 DC comics palette for my colors, used post-processing to get the printed look, and there you go.
My prompt format for the characters is:
A -anthro wearing , long tail (if a dinosaur) , comic panel by 1968, in the style of 1960s Marvel comics
Because all weights are averaged a bit, to get a 1970s comic look, you have to prompt for late 60s, ortherwise it looks late 80s.
Background prompt was:
a distant city, a rocket launches from its center, flying toward the sky, comic illustration by jack kirby, inked lines, flat color, blue sky, green grass, orange rocket, from 1968

Gromverse short comics by Phobs part 4
The tumblr ban war threw me off balance and I wasn't in the mood to translate anything AT ALL for a few weeks.
Anyway, get a grip, you rag! as we say; here are the rest of the IG strips I liked best.
Tumblr media
Poet: Have you ever read "Rome and Juliet"?
Lady: I've read "Kashtanka"*. Do you want a bite on the ass?**
*"Kashtanka" (Russian: Каштанка) is an 1887 short story by Anton Chekhov about a young foxy-looking mongrel Kashtanka ,who lost her master. All in all, typical Russian classic literature.
**The dialogue itself is a meme from 2000, when parody translations from the "Funny Goblin Translations" series were in vogue in Russia (in short it's something like Star wars bad lip reading but in full movie form). This particular dialogue is taken from the Lord of the Rings parody (to be more precise, the dialogue was between Arwen and Aragorn xD).
Tumblr media
How to court a girl?
X - bring her a flower / Igor: I've got you something.
V - bring her the corpse of her enemy / Poet: Step on me.
This is how Phobs saw this frame from comics. Because she headcanons Poet as a beanpole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phobs: Arc of the Fireworshipper, all the same, except the Fireworshipper takes on a shape the size of a house.
Tumblr media
Fireworshipper: Igor! Igor, why aren't we doing what I dream about?!
Igor: Fuck off!
Fireworshipper: Igor!
Igor: I said "fuck off!"
Meanwhile, Igor took a vacation to touch the grass*
Tumblr media
*To touch grass is a slang expression meaning to calm down, to comprehend zen.
Phobs: Who am I fooling, I'm drawing Grom dojinshi (about Chrysalis and the Poet) just to get to this piece of storyboard…
Tumblr media
Poet: Gumilyov or Akhmatova?
Chrysalis: Shawarma in lavash or in pita?
After the MGPD movie you probably already know this, but let me clarify: shawarma is very popular in Russia, it is food of the gods and ordinary workers, so you don't have to deal with lunches and dinners in the kitchen for hours after you're tired af after work.
Tumblr media
Clever Man: I've decided to sew one of you Grom's face on.
All: CURSED.
Clever Man: I know, so you'll be pulling straws (lmao, Poet didn't stand a chance, he's a loser for life).
The Clever Man's Friend Whose Name I Have Safely Forgotten: You forgot to take your pills in the morning again, didn't you?
Cocytus: I want to try it to-.
Styx: NO.

[Irregular Webcomic! #1893 Rerun](https://ift.tt/2FvMyC1)
The Lethe is one of the mythical rivers of the Greek Underworld.
The ancient Greeks seem to have been pretty keen on defining actual, specific geography for places that nobody had ever been.
2018-11-18 Rerun commentary: In fact, the ancient Greeks defined not one, not two, but six different rivers of the Underworld:
The Styx: The main river of the Underworld, also known as the river of hatred. It encircles the Underworld of Hades seven times[1]. It eventually runs into a great marsh at the centre of Hades. It has the power to confer invulnerability, as in the story of Achilles, whose mother dipped him in the river Styx, holding him by his heel to do so - thus resulting in his one weak spot, the original Achilles' heel.
The Lethe: The river of oblivion, or forgetfulness. It has the power stated in the comic above, of making people forget everything they knew. This river also encircles Hades[2].
The Acheron: The river of pain, or woe. This is most often the river cited in mythology that Charon, the ferryman of the Underworld, rows souls across to take them from the land of the living to the land of the dead[3].
The Phlegethon: The river of fire. This river runs parallel to the river Styx[4].
The Cocytus: The river of lamentation, or wailing. This river - guess what? - encircles Hades[5].
Oceanus: This river is best known for being effectively the sea, encircling the entire mortal world. And because it encircles the mortal world... it separates the mortal world from the Underworld! Yes, this river also separates Hades from the mortal world[6].
[1] Which is some truly wacky geography. The river goes around the Underworld seven times... so presumably there are seven copies of the river between Hades and the outside world, and you'd need to cross all seven of them to go from one place to the other. I guess it's some sort of enormous spiral? [2] Sure, why not? [3] That's another river that encircles Hades, separating it from the land of the living. [4] Which means the Phlegethon must also encircle the Underworld, not just once, but seven times like the Styx. We're now up to sixteen watercourses that encircle Hades and separate it from the land of the living. [5] Seventeen. And counting. [6] The ancient Greeks clearly loved their fantasy geography. But were they any good at geography? Debatable.
