Coffee's Random Rec List (take 1)

I have no explanation for this except that I've wanted to do more to promote other writers for a while, but I didn't know how to go about making rec lists and, well, mostly I was just lazy. So, basically, I'm going through my bookmarks and picking out some underrated gems. I can't say I'll do this with any particular frequency, and I'm mostly doing this tonight to procrastinate my own writing, haha. But also, this has been a crazy few days for me and I want to give back. So! 1. Friends who cook together... by @2manyfandoms2count

After Hawkmoth's defeat, Adrien Agreste finally gets a taste of freedom as he moves from the Mansion to his own flat, and from Lycée to University. He relies a little too much on food delivery for Marinette's taste, though. Maybe food won't be the only thing simmering in the kitchen as they learn how to cook together...

5 Chapters. Fun fact: this is the first fic I ever bookmarked on ao3. (Admittedly, I was reading a lot before I started bookmarking, but the fact that this fic made me take the leap says something). What can I say about this? Well, PRPR and cooking together? Idk why that wouldn't be enough right there. It's SO CUTE. I've definitely read it more than once.

2. If I’m evil, and you’re evil, then who’s stopping Hawkmoth? by @ninoisntluka

Multimouse is caught by Mayura and Hawkmoth. The only way to survive was to swear fealty to their cause. But Aspik refuses to let his friend go down this dark path alone, even if it means betraying the one he loves most. Actually, most of this could’ve been solved if either of them had actually talked with each other, but the mind games take on a life of their own. Watch two idiots who are essentially playing tic-tac-toe, but think they are playing 5-Dimensional chess, when the game is checkers.

Oneshot. I won't spoil more than the summary says. but this is pure crack/identity shenanigans. A fun and chaotic read.

3. undeniable by @zimtlein

For whatever unfathomable reason, Kagami decides to play matchmaker. She’s worryingly bad at it. So of course, Alya has to do as much damage control as possible.

Oneshot. This one is so funny! Kagami's trying to set up the love square, but like the summary says she's a terrible matchmaker, and it's peak comedy. It has great platonic Kagami and Alya interactions too!!

4. burning through the hours talking by @calico-and-lace

Stay a while, stay a while, stay here with me, lie here with me. I like me better when I'm with you. A love-square song fic played to the tune of I Like Me Better by Lauv.

Oneshot. This one starts with Adrinette snuggling on a rooftop in New York, and their relationship progresses in different Marichat and Ladynoir scenes over time. It's just really soft, and it works so well with the song!!

5. safe and sound by @agnes-is-wright

Adrien has nightmares, and finds comfort in an unlikely place. Or rather, person.

Oneshot. Hits right in the hurt/comfort feels. Adrien ends up calling Marinette for comfort in the middle of the night. Short but very sweet!

6. Totally Not a Rom-Com by @nomolosk

Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Graham de Vanily (formerly Agreste) meet for the first time on a trans-Atlantic flight to New York. Cuteness and fluff ensues.

Oneshot. No-Miraculous AU, but even if that's not normally your jam I urge you to give this one a try because it's freaking adorable. Also I've definitely wanted to do that whole falling in love on a plane thing HAHA. Needless to say...I have not been successful.

7. i say your name in hopes you hear it in the stars by @lilacteapot

Ladybug and Chat Noir have been separated for years after the defeat of Hawk Moth. No word has come from either since then, and Marinette hopes to see his shadow pass during her visits to the Trocadero even if the chances are slim to none. After a chance encounter, however, she may hear the familiar sound of her kitty's bell once again.

This is bittersweet but ends on a hopeful note, and it's so heartfelt! Plus, the writing is lovely. (I may be biased since this is one of my friends but shhhh!)

hiiiii kayla <33 2. what fanfic do you wish you got more response on? im not particularly fussed about this, but my ladrien june ficlets, especially the second and fourth ones. i just really enjoyed writing them and while they aren't perfect by any means, it was really fun to just indulge in messing around with tone and word choice and symbolism 12. do you respond to comments, why or why not? yes always!! i practically thrive off of feedback tbh, and while i try not to reply instantly, especially if im in the middle of doing other things, i hope my replies carry at least some resemblance to how happy the original comment made me (or have the same vibe, im also very fussy about that) 18. recommend someone else fic! (And tag them if they have a tumblr!) i'm insane for a lot of fics but one i feel is particularly underappreciated is parallels by @silvmoonsky. the premise of it is so pretty, and i think about it a lot, and while it's incomplete, it's definitely worth the read <3

It’s the end of the year which means it’s finally time for the ML Big Bang’s yearly fic rec lists! We’re really excited to bring you our contributors’ favourite fics started this year to supply you with plenty of reading material while you’re waiting for the Big Bang fics’ publication in January.

Ladybug and Marinette have both been acting strangely since Monarch's defeat, and Chat Noir would give anything to know why—to be able to help them. He just…didn't expect his answers to come when Ladybug drags him to his father's statue in the middle of the night along with a bag full of spray paint.

This fic explores the aftermath of the season 5 finale and provides some badly needed hurt/comfort, lovesquare communication, and vandalism ; )

Chat Noir thought it might be a good idea to start keeping a list of all the strange things Ladybug had been doing lately. It might help him to figure out what it all meant. There was the stumbling, the stuttering, the blushing. It had appeared out of nowhere. No, that wasn't quite right. It had all started when they were dancing at the gala, when she'd been so nervous that she tripped over the perfectly flat marble floor and smashed her face into his chest.

It's hard to categorize this. Is this a ship or is it gen? It's strictly Adrienette because they're married. But pre-reveal. It forks after Kwami's Choice and asks the question: How would LB cope with LB and CN never getting their miraculous back after Kwami's Choice? But the story's title seems to indicate that this is kind of a "forbidden Ladynoir" fic because it's an allusion to the potentially devastating effects of "looking back" when you shouldn't. I've read this fic like a dozen times and am completely obsessed.

There’s a certain amount of telepathy created after several years fighting beside someone. It’s a mix of chemistry, history, and probably a bit of actual magic, and it comes down to this: Chat Noir usually knows exactly what his Lady is thinking. So, when a bike messenger hands him a three digit number written on a piece of hospital stationary, he knows exactly what Ladybug is asking him to do. He just can’t believe it.

When Ladybug just scrapes into the top 10 of Paris’ favourite heroes list, she asks her partner and her best friend for help. After they decide she’s not personable enough, which in result, makes her unapproachable, Marinette goes out to try and become one with the public by writing her very own dating blog. As the blog turns into an overwhelming hit, Marinette finds herself in an awkward position, once again falling for the guy she’s always longed for; a guy who has started his own search for love following her ‘Super’ guide to ‘Super’ Dating.

I just love the idea of Ladybug writing a dating column as she tries to find love in the city.

I told myself I had to get to eight fics before I sent out another list and I finally got there, so here we go!

In no particular order:

My body moves (it’s speaking loud) by @guardiankarenterrier Nino is walking home in the middle of a night after hanging out with his friends. He's attacked on the way, and turns out the "mugger" isn't after him. He's after Adrien. Nino rediscovers his protective instinct. Chat Noir might show up. This author is really good at subtext. Like so much feeling and meaning throughout their work! One shot - Platonic Adrino.

Letting Someone See You Cry by Inkworld This is just the sweetest of confessions. One shot - Adrino.

Uncharted Waters by @ck2k18 This is technically poly, but focuses on the new burgeoning Adrino feelings. DJWiFI is established and Adrien has asked Nino to teach him how to kiss. Explores Nino's headspace as he grapples with and figures out his poly in a world that very much frowns on that. So authentically real. Multi-chapter - incomplete. Adrino as part of pre OT4.

Future Nostalgia by @coffeebanana Adrien catches sight of Carapace holding a child and he really really likes it. So sweet! One shot. Established Adrino.

love you in the dark by @bbutterflies Adrien is in the closet with everyone except Nino. Nino thought he was okay with that. Turns out he's not. This one is SO RAW, and SO good!! Angst. But happy ending!! One shot. Established Adrino.

Bros Before Heroes by deinde_prandium Nino pulls Adrien into the broiler room once again to warn him about Chat Noir. Adrien can't take this warning seriously. Set in season five, and feels very much like a Rocketear 2! one shot. Platonic Adrino. HILARIOUS!

The moment I knew (I'd no choice by to love you) by @bbutterflies Nino steps up to fake date Adrien to keep the press off his back about his dating life. Turns out he enjoys pretending a little too much. Nino's revelation of feelings in this one is one of my favorite Adrino scenes ever. So well done. Multi chapter complete. Adrino.

Would Trust You With Everything by Kasienda The self promotion is starting to feel less weird. Be proud of me! Haha! In this one, Alya didn't tell Nino about continuing as Rena Furtive and him catching her in a lie resulted in their breakup. Adrien can't be there very often, so shows up at night as Chat Noir to nurse Nino through his break up. They have a little too much fun and maybe fall in love again. Background Alyanette. Multichapter complete. Adrino. HAPPY READING!!

Remember That Time When... by @mostlovedgirl

Twenty-two-year-old Marinette Agreste was looking forward to the anniversary trip she would be taking with her husband Adrien that weekend. Those plans are derailed when she wakes up in her old bedroom... and she’s seventeen again.

Multi-chapter. This fic is so fun, and I love the way it plays with both sides of the time travel trope. On the one hand you’ve got Adrien and Marinette suddenly transported to a future where they’re married, while in their time, they’re not together (though Marinette’s crazy in love with him of course). And on the other hand, you’ve got married Adrienette back in the past needing to pretend they’re not even together! It’s sweet and fun, and I loved seeing both how Adrienette got there, as well as what they’re like as an established couple at the same time.

A Hundred Thursdays by Midnight Musume (Peas)

Marinette is stuck repeating the same day over and over. Her friends (and especially Chat Noir) help her cope.

Two-shot. Groundhog day type fic where Marinette’s stuck in a time loop. (In the second chapter, Adrien’s the one who is stuck.) It’s extremely well executed, and I really enjoyed the Marichat dynamic, especially with how it was influenced by the interactions Marinette had (or did not have) with Adrien earlier in the day.

Clairvoyance by @whatarubberchicken

Being hit by an akuma is not usually this delightful. Or bright. Or completely eye-opening.

One-shot. This fic hits me right in the feels, with Chat Noir being transported to a perfect future where he’s married with children and so, so happy, and it’s just so beautiful. Before, of course, the akuma’s power is ended and it’s over.

Eight Years Overnight by @coffeebanana

All Adrien wanted was to finish grading papers and have a relaxing weekend with his family. He most definitely did NOT expect Bunnyx to show up and drag him eight years into the future. When Ladybug followed her husband into the future, she didn't expect to see him playing the part of the villain. She didn't expect fourteen-year-old Emma to follow her through, either. And Chat Noir from the future was wrong to think that saving his kidnapped wife would be a piece of cake the second time around.

OR: Ladynoir July with a time-travelling twist.

Multi-chapter. This fic is exactly the kind of fic I’m usually thinking of when I think of a time travel fic. It’s a little bit confusing in the way that such stories always are, but the confusion is really kept to a minimum. It’s so interesting because the love square get together is not a component of this fic, they’re married in both times! But it works so well, and the trust they have in each other in both times is a recurring theme and it’s beautiful. This is plotty and well constructed. 

Why Are You Like This? by @carpisuns

An older Chat Noir shows up in the middle of a class field trip with a special mission for his younger self.

Two-shot. This is sweet, hilarious, and utterly perfect. Chat Noir meddles in the love square and it cracks me up.

A Sound of Thunder by Tempomental

“Bye-bye, little… actually, that’s your line, isn’t it? Sorry.”

Ladybug stared at the man in front of her. Tall. Shaggy, but not unkempt blond hair. Oh yeah, and he was wearing a Ladybug costume.

“Who - who are you?”

“Oh, right, sorry.” He drew himself up to his full height and proudly announced, “My name is Adrien Agreste, and I’ve come from the future to rescue you!”

Multi-chapter. Adrien also comes back from the future to help out with the ladybug miraculous. It’s extremely intense and well written and every time I thought I had spotted a problem in the writing, it turned out to be a plot element but holy shit I thought I was going to die with how intense this is. If you like plot, you will absolutely LOVE this fic.

when you weren’t mine to lose by @bugsandchatons

Change is a scary thing, especially when it feels like nothing has stayed the same.

It’s been a year since Marinette became the Guardian of the Miracle Box - a year of struggling beneath a burden she never asked for, a weight that has her leaning on her partner more and more as the hours fly by, of letting him come to her, too, when he needs a soft place to land. A year of falling for the boy who takes on the world by her side with a smile made of sunlight, and fighting the growing urge to tell him what he means to her.

After all, they’ll have time enough for that when Paris is safe.

But when the unthinkable happens, Marinette learns the tragedy of loving someone quietly, and the lines she’ll cross to save him.

Multi-chapter. This is what happens when Ladybug loses Chat Noir: she uses Hawkmoth to go back in time to save him. It hurts in all the best ways and the writing is absolutely gorgeous and somehow we still get a happy ending!

Actual Cat Adrien Agreste AU!

An AU where Adrien’s identity was eventually revealed to either HM or his victim which lead to a time traveling Akuma who cursed Adrien into a cat to prevent him from ever becoming Chat Noir (my bet is on Nathalie). He was thusly kicked out of his house and eventually ran into Marinette and became her pet. The akuma evidently didn’t know Marinette was Ladybug so she was able to slip by unnoticed until the events of Stoneheart. The story is just the first 5 chapters which is mostly story set up but I like it, and in kind of the same way as Chat Blanc and The Devastation it gives me story ideas :)

Whenever Adrien imagined sharing a hotel room with Ladybug...it wasn't like this. It was supposed to be on a desert island somewhere, they were supposed to be happy, and he always figured he'd actually know Ladybug's real name by then.

Instead, Adrien's injured and Ladybug's insistent on hiding him away from Hawk Moth. Plus, as if finding out he's been fighting his father for years isn't enough, Adrien's pretty sure Ladybug's been acting differently since she found out who he is. What he is.

And Ladybug...has no idea what to say to make things better.

Started as a Ladrien June fic that got out of the author’s hands (as fics tend to do). Fic exploring the fallout of a HM reveal and Marinette’s subsequent spiral when faced with identity reveals that she can’t tell others about as well as Paris’s response when presented with limited information. Also touches on issues caused by Adrien’s unaddressed insecurities about control and abandonment.

No spirit is completely isolated, they cross from time to time. Jack spent his first three hundred years crossing paths with some heavy hitters, and now has to learn how to live with others on a regular basis

A set of stories that covers Jack’s time before and after the events of the movie and his interactions with Mother Nature, Old Man Winter, Peter Pan, and the Guardians as well as how Jacks status as a seasonal spirit and a guardian effects those relationships. Some exploration of magic in general and Jack’s magic outside of his ability to make frost, the effects of his power now being tied to number of believers, and how people might approach facing their own death as well as immortality.

It’s an interesting series of stories! You should give them a try!

Miraculous Fic Rec of Underrated Stories Pt. 1

I read too much fanfiction. In efforts to slow myself down ive decided to start a rec series. These are all the stories ive read that are not my top recs, but definitely underrated. Give them some love!

Jealousy, Jealousy by MyFairKatie

Oneshot, 2k

Adrien takes it upon himself to make Lila as jealous of Marinette as he possibly can—which may or may not lead to him blurting out that they are dating.

Whoops.

Not labeled as crack but definitely crack. Or at least, I take it as such given the liberties taken with the characterization. I think its funny and the lila takedown is refreshingly different amidst the large body of preexisting lila takedown fics.

When Marinette invites Adrien to live with her temporarily while she recovers from an injury, she thinks the hardest part is going to be hiding her feelings from him. But Adrien's idea of being helpful might go...a little overboard.

Some solid post reveal pre relationship adrienette. I like the emphasis on communication. Theyre adults and have already defeated hawkmoth, so its a chill dynamic.

Marinette had a bad day, and this time transforming into Ladybug doesn't help.

Chat Noir plucks her off the Eiffel Tower for a pep talk.

Hurt/comfort for sure, but i really like the angle. Written pre season 4, so when it discusses marinette under stress, its not from a guardian angle. It lets the characters really think about how their perceptions of what their bodies are capable of have changed due to holding a miraculous, and the tone of the story is very nice. Almost slice of lifeish? This could be inserted into canon and break nothing, while still being meaningful. Nice read

They knew, and there would be no magical reset button for the memories they'd made today. She'd have to see him at school every day, and she'd see the Chat in him, as surely as he'd see the Ladybug in her.

They remember the events of oblivio au. I highly enjoy stories where learning each others identities does not lead to a no-discussion lovefest. This is a great marinette pov of her overthinking everything and questioning the validity of her feelings. No salt is thrown in the process and its a nice feelings analysis and resolution.

When last minute plans come up, Chat Noir leaves the country for two weeks. Ladybug finds she misses him far more than she thought she would.

One word: ladynoir. Story ignores ladybug falling in love with chat, just jumps straight there. Its just 5k of pining guys. Their interaction is funny, gotta love the ladynoir quips. And the author LEAVES THE STORY AT THE WORST (BEST) PLACE ARKRGOGMGNGKDKSD

Plagg and the Variety Cheese Pack by quicksilversquared

Plagg can sniff out cheese anytime, anywhere. It's a special talent of his. But it can get him in trouble as well.

When Marinette buys a variety cheese pack for Chat Noir, Plagg sniffs it out and ends up accidentally going home with her. Will he get back to Adrien before the next akuma attack?

(Probably not)

Hijinks and shenanigans, unsurprisingly. Plagg-centric, which is great cause he (and the kwamis in general) deserve more love. I like how adrien circumnavigates plaggs eccentricities and how its funny in the story, while not ragging too hard on plagg for being difficult.

Understandably enough, Marinette has a complete meltdown.

Explicit story, rated 18 and up. Post reveal. Marinette is hilariously thirsty throughout all of this, and her only barrier is herself. Vibes a bit like a slow burn despite being a oneshot. Despite the tag, i would definitely catagorize this as a pwp.

Lila takedown story + identity reveal. Set at a fancy christmas party. Hits all the right beats without any salt or out of nowhere identity revelation. I think its pretty in character and trim, albiet ignoring canons problems with identity reveals.

Ladybug is exhausted, and Chat convinces her to finally start bringing on the temp wielders permanently.

Unfortunately for Chat's poor kitty brain, she chooses to use that opportunity to set up Multimouse with Aspik.

He is SO SCREWED.

Unlikely to be finished, so just treat it like a oneshot. But its got some lovely ladynoir interaction, ladybug and chat noir actually in an equal partnership, some mouse!marinette, and some bee!adrien, desipte what the summary says. I think that matchup makes way more sense, so its cool to see it. I love vipermouse, its just like adrienette except even sillier and more fabricated complications.
