Hear me out. Drayton and Kieran with a mute s/o?
(Tbh I feel like Drayton would think they’re just shy for the first couple of interactions until someone tells him though lol)
Okay, I'm not super knowledgable about deaf or mute folks. But here's my best shot at this ask, if I am incorrect about anything please let me know!
My interpretation of this is that reader is deaf and communicates through sign language, and they cannot speak at all.

Drayton:
Yeah, he's totally clueless at first. Doesn't get why you're doing odd hand motions instead of talking, but he figures everyone has their quirks. It really bothers you that he won't acknowledge it, so you ask Lacey to tell him for you.
When Drayton hears it from Lacey, he feels really bad and is immediately apologetic. He rushes over to you and attempts to apologize, then realizes he doesn't understand sign language at all, so he stumbles on his words a lot.
Lacey facepalms watching all of this go down, so she reluctantly teaches Drayton some basic sign language so he can get his apology across to you. He's delighted to finally be able to talk to you properly-- he has a crush on you, after all.
The rest of the Elite Four soon complains that Drayton studies sign language better than he studies for any of his classes, but he is absolutely determined to make things right with you. Lacey says she's never seen him work that hard!
When he finally confesses to you, he does it right. He makes sure he corrects himself if he messes up a sign, accidentally blurts out a few words while signing-- but you can tell he really means it. It warms your heart to see him trying so hard for you, despite his initial ignorance on the subject.
Drayton notices you get bullied a lot because you're some regular student hanging out with the big leagues (the BBA Elite Four). He IMMEDIATELY shuts down anyone who has the balls to talk shit in front of you knowing you can't hear them. That kind of vile behavior will never be tolerated on his watch.
He texts you a lot. He still talks to you through sign when he sees you in person, but since he's usually busy doing League Club work (or just pretending to be busy), he texts you when he has a moment of free time. At one point you changed his contact name on your phone to "The Drayster", which made his entire WEEK. He would NOT shut up about it.
Don't let this man figure out swears and silly insults in sign language, he's gonna use them all the time now. One time Crispin asked what Drayton was laughing about and he just signed "bullshit" in response which immediately had you on the floor in tears of laughter while Crispin looked SO confused.
Kieran:
Luckily he's more perceptive and understanding than Drayton, so he picks up on your disability right away. Turns out he already knew a bit of sign language from teaching himself too.
When you ask him how he knew sign language already, he just shyly responds that he wanted to be prepared for the event that he needed to communicate with Ogerpon through it for some reason.
He teaches himself a LOT more sign language after meeting you. He really wants to go the extra mile for his new friend and possible crush so he studies and does his research diligently.
Kieran already understands if you're socially awkward, because he's full of anxiety himself. He totally gets it if you need to rely on him to be your translator at any point.
He really loves you and has no problems with your disability, even if he has to try a little harder for you. And after a while, communicating with you becomes easier, which makes you really happy!
After the events of Indigo Disk, he becomes much more protective of you. He wants to become stronger so he can protect you from anyone who tries to bully you or hurt you. His Hydrapple is gonna have a word or two with whichever idiot tries to disrespect your name in his presence.
Whenever he greets you, he tries not to catch you off guard from behind or something, since you can't exactly hear him coming. He really tries to respect your boundaries too, so if you feel uncomfortable with anything he does, he understands.
Slightly unrelated, but Kieran definitely flips people off a lot. He tries to be less pissed when he's around you, but on his own? He's saying "fuck you" to a LOT of people.
One time he tried explaining to a guy about your disability, and the guy had the nerve to do the 👉👌 sign at you as some kind of sick joke... the BBA Elite Four found that guy beaten into a bloody pulp on the ground later. Kieran was taking NO prisoners that day.

Translation Notes:
Mippiki: Written "３人と１匹" but read as "みっぴき," this word is very important to the Kyuushi fandom! It describes the main characters living in the office- Rona, Draluc, Hinaichi, and John. "Mi" comes from 3 and "ippiki" is how you would count 1 small animal, an armadillo in this case.
Sagyou's "hah? to respect ratio": The "hah?" here is like an exasperated sound he's making. In Japanese it was one of these babies: ぁ゙. So his frustration to respect ratio is 9 to 1.
Calling someone a typhoon/hurricane: I think this is probably self explanatory but since I don't think this is a common expression in English, I'll explain a bit. Basically it's likening someone to the chaos and power of a storm.
Shot's "filthy cool": In Japanese this is "ヨゴレかっこいい." I can't find instances of this phrase being used outside of Kyuushi so this seems to be a Bonnoki original? I've seen others tl this some different ways but I tried to make it sound kinda cool in English, though it also kinda makes no sense lol, sorry.
Tabiko being in the "vampires" section: Just in case anyone is confused, Tabiko is definitely a human. I think there just wasn't space to stick her anywhere else.
Manner calling Satetsu "big bro": "兄イ" in Japanese. I think most people recognize words like "onii-san" and "aniki" at this point but I'm not sure about just "anii" (also big brother) so I decided to tl it here. As you may have guessed, this is not him literally trying to adopt Satetsu as his brother, but rather a term of respect (albeit a teasing one). Satetsu is uncomfortable being called this, mostly because it reminds him of his embarrassing delinquent past.
Nagiri's nickname for John: I chose to keep this as "Maru" ("丸," literally "circle") just because I think it sounds like a cute nickname lol.
Fiasco calling Manner "spoiled rich boy": Originally "ボンボン" in Japanese. You might have heard a character called "bon" or even this kinda insulting version, "bonbon," before. It describes a young man from a rich family. I added "spoiled" because I thought it sounded too much like a complement just to call him "genius rich boy," even with "damn" in front 😂
Nuyan: John's "nu" combined with a dog's "wan" (bark). Remember that time Yomo hypnotized John into acting like a dog? That John never fully recovered from? Yeah.

Kyuushi has a ton of characters and they can be difficult to keep track of, especially for the English fandom which doesn't have access to all the materials.

From this moment on I go into busy mode again, but I didn't want to leave without wishing all my mutuals and all simblrs in general a very Happy New Year 2024 and dedicate some words I have been meaning to say to you but hadn't found the time or the appropriate way to do it.
I'll start by saying to all of you who had a hard time in 2023, those who went through depression, physical and/or mental health problems, family problems, marital problems, work problems, problems with your children, with your partners, with your parents or grandparents. To all those who in some way suffered or were hurt in the year that is ending -and assuming that all of us here, or most of us, are storytellers-, my advice is: don't stop writing, ever. Keep doing it through it all, through the good times as well as the bad; write even if the tears well up in your eyes and fall on the keyboard. Just write!
Writing heals, cures and consoles, because it is what we do and because there is no better way to get out all that we carry inside, be it sad or happy. I went through the long night of depression myself and I can say with all certainty that writing was what pulled me through, and that although it may not seem so, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it's never as dark as when it's about to dawn. I suffered from depression since 2006 and for many years; around that time I started a novel that took me 14 years to write. Through all that time, I slowly healed, and by the time I finished, I was free of all the demons that drove me to write that particular story in the first place.
Okay, enough of me, I want to tell my mutuals, that I love what you write/create, and I really enjoy your work, be it stories or gameplay; and not only those who write, but also those who make custom content, mods, those who create any kind of art, those who take beautiful pictures, those who share memes or funny things about their pets. All of you, know that I read you every day and I take you with me everywhere I go, because you are so talented, creative, funny and interesting.
I don't always have the courage to comment on your posts, be it about sims or personal, for different reasons, mainly because of language barriers, because as you know, English is not my native language, and sometimes I don't have my translator at hand to confirm that what I am writing is correct, or if there is a spelling or grammar mistake or a typo in there; also because of my social awkwardness, as I am a rather shy and introverted person; and the fact that I'm an old simmer, cause believe me, compared to many of you I am old, and this makes me afraid of saying something out of place, out of time, or of being politically incorrect. This may sound silly, but I was born and raised in a time where people thought and acted very differently, even in my early years of sims on the internet, everything was way different than it is now.
Well, those are the reasons why I don't always comment, but the fact is that I read you, I like what you do, what you write, I'm in love with your characters -who are already part of my sim-universe-; your stories capture my imagination, intrigue me, interest me, amuse me and, above all, teach me, because I've learned a lot from you, talented creatures, in the time I've been reading your work.
Anyway, I got off my chest what I've been wanting to tell you for days now. I also want to thank you for all your likes, comments, questions, messages, and in general for all the love I received from you this year, it's amazing. I never expected so much in just one year, really. So, thank you, both to those who have been following me for a long time, and have stayed with me and my chaotic stories, and to the new followers, Sims 3 and Sims 4, I thank you all.
Well, this was already very long, sorry for the rambling, lol, I wish each and every one of you a very Happy New Year, may all your dreams and plans become a beautiful reality in the year that begins, because, believe me, some dreams do come true, I had the joy of confirming it right at the end of this year.

AI kind of scares me.
I think complicated legal stuff is something ChatGPT must just be freakishly good at because of the way its able to access public law information and translate the legalese into something easier for the average person to understand. Its reading the information and understanding it rather than just parroting what its reading.
I needed legal help to prevent my income from being taxed twice since I’m a duel citizen. I was able to get it to explain international tax treaty law to me better than our lawyer. Help me find out eligibility requirements and recommend the right forms, and walk me through filling them out.
And since I had already been run through the process by a real human lawyer, I had an idea what info was correct or incorrect. I think it was all mostly correct.
I’m a little bit intimidated to be honest. Uncomfortable I guess? It really cant be this smart, its some sort of trick right???? I keep hearing people say “Its not that good it sucks lol” but my curiosity got the best of me and I think it is VERY skilled. In almost ANY subject.
This is doing to destroy countless professional fields.

rambling about fujin and the white snake adeptus
ok so. i was watching videos of previous lantern rite playthroughs on yt (started playing at the end of january 2023 so i couldn't even take part in last year's) and looking back now after the 4.4 livestream, i thought maybe that 2022 mingxiao lantern was a nod to fujin, so i started digging and went down the rabbit hole basically and collected some things i found interesting.
NO LEAKS, everything written about here is mentioned in in-game items or is a part of chinese culture and legends, but some of it might be considered potential spoilers regarding chenyu vale
first, i wanna preface this by saying that i am no expert in chinese culture so please do correct me if i say something incorrect.
during the 2022 lantern rite they didn't mention which fallen liyue hero the lantern was for (or i missed it) but i found a really good post on hoyolab by Flora's cake.EN, talking about chinese customs and the celebration of the lunar new year. they say that the mingxiao lantern was based on the lantern with the fish pattern of the previous year's festival, and they also note that the lantern resembles carp and goldfish, how in chinese culture they symbolize wealth, fortune, and benefits, and express "people's yearning for prosperity, auspiciousness, and good fortune". this symbolism in chinese culture is very clearly transferred to the game too since we know from the stream that there is a well-known legend in chenyu vale about a carp adeptus named fujin and that "in local legends the golden carp is a symbol of good luck". they also talk about jademouth, a famous landmark left behind by an adeptus to protect the people from flooding, and mention the abodes of the white snake and the carp adeptus.
bai suzhen aka the white snake is the central figure of a chinese legend titled "the legend of the white snake". there are several versions and i'll be fully transparent, i haven't read them yet unfortunately. according to this article by Minjie Su, who researches medieval literature (and apparently had the same uni major as me lol) bai suzhen was originally an evil snake spirit, but later the story became a romance between her and a man, Xu Xuan. in one of the later versions, though she is still morally questionable (she "poisons the well to boost her husband’s pharmacy") she is devoted to Xu and sympathetic to humankind. Xu almost dies of shock when he sees her true snake form. (1) however, she "revives him and makes him believe the snake was but an illusion. Enraged, Fahai wages war against Madam White and holds Xu as hostage, Madam White commands water to rise from the lake to drown Fahai’s temple. She would have defeated the monk, if she did not feel sympathy towards the innocent townsfolk involved in her war. In the end, she surrenders to Fahai’s power and becomes imprisoned under the Pagoda, but not before her short reunion with Xu and the birth of their son. (...) she will never bee freed unless the palm tree before the Pagoda blossoms (...)" she is eventually freed by her son, though this action is not intentional, merely a coincidence. (2)
while searching, i also found this post by baoboatree on reddit, who did some huge work and re-translated the descriptions of the echoes of an offering artifact set. three things to note before i continue: 1) this part might contain POSSIBLE SPOILERS regarding the story of the new chenyu vale region, so proceed with caution 2) my chinese is not good enough to be able to compare the translation to the original and verify the information presented here (i am NOT saying it is incorrect and i'm certainly NOT trying to criticize baoboatree, just thought i should mention this) and 3) the post is relatively old, so some information might have been updated/re-written in-game and become outdated here. for these reasons, it's best to take it all with a grain of salt.
according to baoboatree's interpretation, the story "involves two adeptus - a "medicine adeptus" and a "carp adeptus". The two are bickering lovers/friends and lived near Chenyu valley. Until one day, the carp adeptus was sacrificed in an ancient ritual and loses her human form. She can no longer walk on land, but longed to see Liyue harbor. The medicine adeptus took her on a trip to Liyue harbor by taking her along in a Serenitea pot . (...) The fish adeptus is implied in at least four of the five pieces to have sacrificed herself again, becoming the sunken jade of Chenyu Vale. In at least one but maybe two legends, the medicine adeptus is implied to have become a tea tree that only grows in Chenyu Vale." they say the medicine adeptus may or may not be madame ping, which personally, i believe it's more likely they have something to do with the white snake adeptus (or is even the white snake adeptus themselves), whose husband was a pharmacist in the legend, and who stole medicine for him in another version of that legend.
i encourage everyone to read the whole reddit post, i found it fascinating and baoboatree really worked hard on it. i don't want to go into too much detail here bc this post is already way too long. when the medicine adeptus brings the carp adeptus to liyue harbor in the teapot, baoboatree also states that, in contrast to the official english translation, the teapot was not a gift from "a friend" but "friends", plural. now, this was actually something i could check, and it is absolutely correct. they theoretize that these friends might include madame ping, the role of the medicine adeptus and carp adeptus being clear. they also note in a comment that the fish lantern during lantern rite might have been representing the fish adeptus. looking back now, i would be surprised if it wasn't. hoyo has shown to pay attention to things like this.
as for why it were two fish, one might have been referencing this medicine adeptus, or one could have simply been put there to make it look more balanced, or to emphasize the wish for good fortune, or maybe there will be more to this that we'll uncover. either way, i'm interested in seeing how the story about this carp adeptus will unfold. if they try to stay close to the legend, it might have been the white snake adeptus that caused the flood which made the carp adeptus sacrifice herself. as for whether this white snake adeptus is the same as the medicine adeptus, honestly i think it could go either way. i could argue both for them being the same character and them not being the same. as of right now, i'm more inclined to think that they are different beings. (edit bc 1) i deleted my reasoning bc looking back it was just ehh and 2) bc i realized that i forgot to add this originally: obviously all of this is just wild speculation, and it could very well be that the story that we get, assuming we learn of these events, will be entirely different. the whole turning into a tree legend from the artifact set could also really just be an in-game myth, though i don't think that very likely, but who knows. either way, nothing even remotely certain can be concluded from the information i presently have.) of course i could very well be wrong, and hoyo will probably do their own take on this legend. after all, they have taken a looot of inspiration from nordic mythology as well (i might do some posts about that too, i was a scandinavian studies major so it's always interesting for me to see how nordic mythology is implemented in games/films etc).
anyway, if anyone read this whole thing, i hope you found it interesting. sorry that it was not very concise, i haven't slept in weeks so my brain is barely working lol. i'm really excited for chenyu vale and lantern rite and can't wait to see what this update brings!
(1) the author points out the storyline also has similarities to that of the french legend of mélusine but i don't have enough brain capacity to go into this as well.
(2) the wikipedia page states that Xu actually dies, and "Bai Suzhen went to Heaven to steal the immortal herb Lingzhi. She succeeded in her mission and used the herb to revive Xu Xian. (...) Bai Suzhen and Xiaoqing fought against Fahai and flooded the temple with water, hurting other living creatures.", however, i can't find this information in the relevant source.

I’m doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc.
The volume numbers will be mismatched for most of the remainder of Trigun, since the Japanese first edition is 3 volumes while all later versions are 2 volumes.

In the Japanese version, the speech bubble is "good morning," but in a barely comprehensible yawn. The yawning onomatopoea is written in small text.
Various translation corrections -

By the way, Vash uses polite speech here, but in a (half-)sarcastic way. (If that makes sense...)
The background mob in this panel is... unique for sure. Skin-and-bones, some guy holding (eating?) seaweed, and a sparkly prince?
Badwick's「笑うね！！」line here is more like "You make me laugh!!" or "Ha ha, very funny!!"
I know Vash jumping in front of the old couple is probably intended to just be an instinctive act of protection, but thinking about my analysis in the previous arc (#08 I think?), I can't help but think about his self-sacrificial tendencies...
On a lighter note, Meryl ends her rant with マヂ(ジ)で！！ which is kind of like... "FR!!" lol
Also Vash is literally dead. Honestly he might've been better off taking the bullet than getting bonked.
Classic MillyMeryl manzai routine (not a single braincell between them). Featuring a pissed Vash.
Milly's joke is a bit hard to translate.... She's actually saying an idiom wrong. The correct phrase (what she says in Overhaul) is 大事の前の小事, which literally means "a small event before/in front of the big event." (this idiom is also an contranym but I won't get into that lol)
However, the kanji she uses for 小事(shōji, small event) is switched for 障子(shōji, wood-and-paper sliding door). They look the same in romaji, but they have different tones.
Meryl's response uses English loanwords/Japanglish that's all slightly incorrect for the situation.
So, the Gramps's comments are about the fact that they're using the words wrong. Apparently Granny didn't notice!? lol
Another silly Milly...
Gramps's line is a sort of double-meaning, since ボケる(bokeru) means both to be silly (as in the funny man role in manzai)(which Milly has been doing throughout) and to go senile.
I love how Vash is 100% tired of this shit and just stares at us.
Japanese-only thing, but I love how he says「わーかってますって 超OKっスよ」. silly goober....
「ジオ・プラント―― 肥沃化プラントの影響を受けて植物が育つ事ができる土地の総称である」
"Geoplant— The general term for land that is capable of growing flora due to the effect of a fertilizing Plant."
The term "geoplant" is actually for the affected land, not the Plant itself. Which is... confusing to be honest....
The Plants mentioned here are the capital P generator Plants, not lowercase p flora plants. This line means that among the Plants on the ships, some of them were also of the fertilization variety necessary for geoplant land.
"Naturally" is continued into Gramps's line, so it should end with an ellipsis.
He says that the property became worth about the same as the area of a 300-yard radius around a ship (which I would imagine is INSANELY valuable), whether they wanted the price to rise or not.
These two lines are actually by Vash.
「おそらく地脈を伝って影響が『飛び地』したんだろうな」
"Perhaps the effects of a Plant spread along a mineral vein and ended up forming an 'enclave' here."
「でもここまでになるにはただそれだけじゃ駄目だ」
"But just that's not enough for it to get to this scale."
I love how quickly he could tell this is a geoplant and recognize how much work and love the couple has put into it.
「それにどれだけ我々が支えられてきたか言葉にならんよ」
"I can't even begin to describe how much hope it has given us."
The word he uses is actually "support," but I couldn't think of a way to make it sound decent other than the next closest word, "give hope."
Not really a translation fix - in Japanese, he says something more like "This is where our lives and hopes are."
I missed it during the annotation (will mark it later), but I think the article for "tycoon" should be "the" or "a," since Morgan hasn't appeared yet.
Gramps mentions that the incident from earlier that day was also one of Morgan's threats. (The annotation should be "like what happened this morning/noon." Will also fix that later.)
I feel like this line by Gramps comes across as a bit too harshly apologetic in English compared to the original? I'm not sure how to convey it accurately though... it's more of a Japanese cultural thing.
The first speech bubble is probably by one of the elderly couple, most likely Gramps, since it says "Vash-kun". Milly calls him "Vash-san."
Also about the "lover's quarrel" tease and Meryl's response:
A common tease for male+female character pairs (and real life...), but the nice thing about this is that there's no hinting of hidden romantic feelings whatsoever (stammering, blushing, etc.). Even through a Vash/Meryl truthing lens, I think at this point there truly is nothing (realized) there yet. There's no forced hetero-amatonormative romance!! (my pet peeve in manga)
These lines are actually an exchange between Badwick and Marilyn.
「うわーーっ いくらすっと思ってるんだその門柱！！」
"Aaahh!! [Watch what you're doing!] Just how much do you think that pillar's worth!?"
「ケチくせー事いいっこなし！！どうせアコギなマネして建てたんでしょ」

I absolutely love your works and this is terribly random but the snippet you posted for your seer!au (which I'm already desperately obsessed with btw) has latin in it (yay!) and I'm a latin student and a bit of the grammar is incorrect- I've no clue how you translated it, feel free to disregard this if it doesn't matter to you, but here's what it should be, grammatically, plus annotations as to why:
The truth will find its way to you.
Veritas viam suam ad te inveniet
(“viam tuam” = your path, “viam suam” = its path, “adveniet” means to arrive- “inveniet” means to find or discover which is closer!)
It will hurt you.
Nocebit tibi
(nocet = present, nocebit = future tense)
It will change you.
Repression will not serve you.
Refrenatio non serviet tibi.
(I can’t find a recorded instance of “repressio” being used, but lewis and short references “refrenatio” as the restraining of emotions which seems close enough?)

(misericordiae is plural, doesn’t match with potest, which is the singular form of the verb. Literally “mercy is not able to be given”)
The only way out is through.

(exitus is the nominative (subject) form of the noun, exitum is the accusative (objective) so it doesn't fit there+ i redeclined solus to match :))

more side order rambling and pointless speculation that will probably be incorrect
WARNING: im rambling and not really thinking about it TOO hard. also this is based on like 50 different theories that have a good chance of Not being true. also ignore grammar/spelling errors (im bad at writing)
i believe ive talked about how i think there could be a metaphor/straight up depiction of healing from traumatic situations and/or learning how to cope with mental health struggles in the game in the past? anyway im gonna do it Again
this kind of hinges off the belief that the octoling shown in the trailer is octarian/not from the splatlands (whatever the correct term is i forgot). if the octoling is from splatsville then uh whoopsie. this is Not Relevant and will age like milk. anyway
octarian society definitely has a lot of strife. especially when in the military. suddenly trying to enter inkopolis and being met with turf wars suddenly being for fun and almost a complete lack of strife has to be wayyyy too much for some octolings. ive mentioned this in a prior post though thats from the perspective that the sr octoling is agent 8 (which im hesitant to believe but this is not the main point for this post specifically) id just like this to be true to contrast with what i think will be a revolving point around marina
and yeah, thats my main point, i think marina will have stuff to work through, too. i dont think she'll be an antagonist, but rather someone who's doing the wrong things for the right reasons or someone who caused a bad situation (which ill just call the death of coral here) on accident while trying to help. she was in the military at a very young age and escaped to inkling society, but the stuff after final fest is what im thinking about.
i can really only bring up NOA dialogue (aside from one thing, if i can find the source for it), so this may be off, but i dont have the resources to look up a 100% authentic translation
the fest stressed her out, and she was very worried about the band breaking up. this is clear in dialogue
though of course pearl comforts her that this isnt the case, i wonder if that fear still lingers in her mind. im not too knowledgeable on marina's characterization (i heard NOA isnt either so, lol) but it seems in character. she definitely hasnt unpacked(? i believe that is the right word) the fear on screen as far as i can tell, though, and i think side order might be about that, a little.
what interests me most is this unused dialogue from if team order won, though:
of course its unused so it doesnt hold as much weight as canon dialogue, but i wonder if she'll hold a similar mentality. she has control, and she sees that she can shape the world. i dont fully agree with her changing everyone to be the same, since she later says this:
if she were to do anything, i think she'd change the world that may try to be like this, but something in it would be functionally unsound and cause the whole thing to break. im not sure if she even would in the first place but i can acknowledge the possibility. itd be ironic, shes good at building machinery but not building a utopia.
i dont think she needs to be saved in this scenario, i think its best if she were to save herself. but this is verrryyy speculative so i cant say much.
tangent aside. marina understanding and moving on/healing from her fears being compared to the protagonist octoling's own journey on recovering would be great. itd be even better with agent 8 in my opinion, since theyve clearly gone through Some Shit and definitely need therapy for it, but i dont want to speculate too much. im expecting all of this to be Wrong but i cant ignore that ive been thinking about it like this lol

randomly remembered a thread i did on twitter last year that i think was fun so i'm reposting it here lol
so The Drdek. it has a nonsense name and its flavor text refers to its bipedal eye, despite there only being one hand. this piqued my interest, so i looked into the flavor text and it took me on a journey
the name is デス・フット, which literally means Death Foot. "The Drdek" was a name decided in 1999,which was firmly in the era when yugioh translations were avoiding the word "death" whenever possible. it's weird, but i sort of get how we got where we are now. the flavor text is 目玉に足の生えた化け物。高くジャンプしてかぎづめで攻撃する。my translation of that would be "A monster that grew a leg on its eye. It has a high jump and a claw attack." the flavor text on the card as printed is mostly correct, but the mistranslation still sticks out. thus, i decided to check its physical release history, in case it had been changed over time. except it doesn't have on. as far as physical cards are concerned, this is an OCG exclusive (for non-yugioh players, OCG is the Japanese version of the game and TCG is the english version). where does the translation come from, then? one of the video games, probably
the first yugioh game featuring The Drdek in english was its third appearance in total, in Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories. it was translated as such
the flavor text is much more accurate. but it's still off, so i decided to go back and look into its other translations. that brought me to Yu-Gi-Oh Dark Duel Stories, the second english appearance of The Drdek
completely different flavor text. this was most likely due to text limitations. the flavor text is the same in japanese, but the text would be longer in english, so the change makes sense considering
in Yu-Gi-Oh The Duelists of the Roses, The Drdek makes its third appearance, but its first as an effect monster, meaning it lacked flavor text, and thus is irrelevant to this conversation
Yu-Gi-Oh The Sacred Cards is the next game where it appears with flavor text. this reads "A boggling monster of an eyeball from which grows a foot. To attack, it leaps high and strikes with its sharp talons." which is an entirely reasonable full translation of the original Japanese, with minimal compromise for character space (it doesn't all fit on screen at once). The Sacred Cards came out in November 2003. with the translation being accurate, it should have ended here. unfortunately, it doesn't
Yu-Gi-Oh The Eternal Duelist Soul changed the flavor text, and it's here that we finally see the flavor text on the above card. that same flavor text was reused in Yu-Gi-Oh Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel
however, i said that The Sacred Cards came out in November 2003. Eternal Duelist Soul came out in came out in October 2002. over a year before! Worldwide Edition also came out in 2003, but it came out in April, months before The Sacred Cards. that means that the mistranslation was present, then fixed. yet, the card posted above is in the modern border treatment. because it doesn't end with the correct translation or the incorrect translation's first appearance
after the brief hiccup of accuracy in The Sacred Cards, the mistranslation becomes the standard translation for The Drdek, and after 2006, the game pretty much vanishes from yugioh video games, because it's bad. its reappearance in 2017 is what gives us the version in the modern border
what's the point? there isn't one. this is just an extended piece of trivia. hope you enjoyed it :)

I definitely aim to! I've gotten worse at responding lately because I've been going through a lot lately but comments bring me so much joy and I love discussing my works with others so even if it's been a year I love to respond!
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don't really do angsty/unhappy endings but I did write this drabble that is very angsty. For one of my longer fics, I would say in silent screams and wildest dreams just because while technically it ends well, I didn't perfectly tie things up.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Like all of them lol, but maybe Cherry on Top just because that one is a fluff fest from start to finish.
7. Do you write crossovers?
I've never written one and currently don't have the inclination to do so, but I'm definitely open to it if the muse ever strikes!
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Like no outright hate, but some that have been filled with corrections on either grammar, spelling or that have told me my characterization was "incorrect" but like whatever.

The thing is, I have many long burning ships and the fire has never gone out on them. What If...? has really re-lit the Steggy flame, and the stuff I write is mostly all about them so they're always way up there, but I must give an honourable mention to The Doctor/Rose and also Percabeth is currently making a STRONG comeback at the moment.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Okay. So there's this Steggy fic. I started it years ago and I only have a few scenes written but it's definitely going to be a multi-chapter fic. The whole premise is that Steve is the only child of Queen Sarah, and Peggy is the prince's personal bodyguard. Problem is, Steve can't inherit the throne because it's a matriarchal line. When Queen Sarah has a health scare, she decides to take matters into her own hands and find her son a suitable wife and future queen so that her son can still maintain the throne in the event of her early passing. However, Peggy's not a fan of the options presented - for more than just the obvious reasons.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm good at characterization and getting their voices/dialogue pretty good!
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Honestly I have to work really hard on my plots to make sure they're tight because very often there are holes in them or they don't tie up/flow as smoothly as much as I'd like. It's why I usually prefer to write the whole thing at once and then post it, because that way I can catch things/find my way out of the corners I tend to write myself into.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I enjoy it! I use multiple languages in my life. Though the characters I normally write for don't really use multiple languages so it's something I would like to find a way to incorporate more, maybe in other fandoms/works eventually.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Unposted Star Wars (Han/Leia), posted the MCU (Steggy)
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I'm not burning for it at the moment (I'm struggling to get much writing done recently for my main fandom) but I do think at one point I'd like to write for Doctor Who, since I love reading for Nine/Rose & Ten (or Tentoo)/Rose it but there's some things I haven't found that I would like to write.

I do like all of my fics a lot, but I would say my top three in no particular order are:
Get In, Get Out (I'm very proud of my writing in this one)

My Kudos stats are a bit skewed because I got hit by the Kudosbot on three separate occasions. That being said, here is the list according to AO3 (I will mark which ones have false numbers)
Yu-Gi-Oh: Tangled Web of Fate (incorrect numbers 🚫) (it hurts me the most on this particular fic because it’s my ongoing baby 😭)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to all comments, though sometimes I see one while I’m busy with something else and forget to come back to it later.
I promise if I don’t respond, it’s usually because of this and by the time I remember, anxiety brain tells me it’s outside of the acceptable timeframe to post a response. I know that’s not true, but anxiety wins 99% of the time in this situation.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Everyone that’s read my fics knows how much I love angst. That being said, I can’t end them that way. The closest I think I’ve come to an angsty ending is the way some of the chapters end in Our Scars remind Us that the Past was Real.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I want to say either The things we do for Love or Crazy for You.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not hate. The closest I’ve gotten is a ‘negative review via bookmark comment’. I’ve learned to just ignore that particular bookmark.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I made the attempt with Task Failed Successfully. I have realized that it’s not my thing writing-wise (but I still love to read it lol)
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not yet, though I do have a few in my Rabbit Hutch (what I call my bunny docs).
One is pure crack insanity that is basically a 4th wall breaking parody of Dragon Age Origins with the Yugioh DM cast as the main characters.
The other is a bit more serious and is set in the World of Warcraft universe with the Yugioh DM cast as the main characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I had one copied and posted without my consent on another platform (it still listed me as the Author though). I filed a petition to have it removed, and while it still shows up in the search results on that platform, when you click the link it states that the fic was removed.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not yet.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, and at one time I wouldn’t even consider it. Now I would, but I would be selective to people whose writing styles I am very familiar with.

I’m also a huge fan of the Dark/Caste/Hateshipping (it’s complicated so I just include all the variations) I have building in my longfic. I love putting those two idiots into situations.

Probably one of the ones in my Rabbit Hutch that I already know will be longfics. I want to finish my current longfic before I try to tackle any of the others.

Hmmm…I want to say being descriptive? Like, the part where you paint the scene and feelings using words…if that makes sense.

Writing from a character perspective that I don’t click with. It’s not that I don’t like the character, I just find myself having a hard time getting into their mindset. * cough* Yugi * cough *
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have done this for a few parts of my longfic, and when I say I go to great lengths of research to make sure it’s right, I mean it. I usually write the English spelling equivalent for Arabic, and for Gaelic I tend to write some of it from a phonetic perspective (I put that in the A/N at the end if it’s phonetic). Foreign language dialogue is something I primarily use to express intimate declarations (like ‘ana bahebik’).
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I’ve only written for one fandom at this point, and that’s Yugioh DM
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Oh wow. I love all of my fics to some degree, but if I had to choose one to be my fave…probably White Lady.
The comments I’ve received on it helped boost my confidence in my writing back during a time when I was really starting to doubt my writing ability. Sometimes when I need a confidence reminder, I go back and reread it and then look over all the wonderful comments.

What is this?
This is a blog where I will be compiling and posting full transcripts related to Mystic Messenger, including but not limited to chat rooms, phone calls, text messages, and emails. I may also reblog various Mystic Messenger content, including translations.
Images from the game (Including CGs, title screens, and seasonal images) will be posted with image descriptions. I will do my best but since I myself don't use alt text, feel free to DM me or send an ask with tips/advice on how to improve them.
This is not a guide or walk through. Earned and broken hearts may be listed next to answer choices, but that does not automatically mean it is the "right" answer. Hearts can get you closer to a Bad Story Ending as much as a Good Ending. Emails will have the correct choice marked.
This blog is completely unofficial and is run by a fan. I couldn't find any full transcripts, just guides, so the idea wouldn't leave me alone. Everything is currently IN PROGRESS.
So who are you?
You can call me Luc, they/them. I am a very tired graduate student from the U.S. who definitely doesn't have enough free time for this. But hey, Seven makes fire-breathing robots, Jaehee watches musicals, Yoosung plays LOLOL, and I... commit to transcribing the entirety of an otome game that's almost seven years old. Listen--the hyperfixation demands tribute. My main blog is @pastelsapphy. Right now it's mostly Mystic Messenger but that can change at the drop of a hat depending on what I'm hyperfocusing on.
What do you mean by "[X] box"?
I note when special textboxes are used during chats. I try to keep the "description" as brief as possible so each post doesn't get too crazy. While most are self-explanatory ("cloud text box") others may not be as obvious ("droopy text box"). If you're unsure of what I mean, you can look at examples of each here.
What order are you posting in?
Honestly? Whatever I feel like. Route chats I'll probably do as I play them, emails and calls may come more randomly, as well as DLC content. You can probably expect Another Story content first since I unlocked it not long ago and I've been replaying both routes over and over lol.
Non-participant versions of chats are likely to come out faster than those MC participates in. I want to mark which choices give which hearts, if any, which gives me a smaller window of time to work on them.
Bro, your typos
I'm transcribing things exactly as written. This means there will be some typos, odd sentence structure, incorrect your/you're and the like, etc. that is sometimes found in the game. Blame the game not me. If you find a legitimate typo, let me know and I'll check it out.

Chapter 212: Fester (part 2)

Not incorrect, but just wanted to say that 何年ぶり (nan nen buri) literally means how many years has it been. ぶり (buri) is an expression used to convey "for the first time in (x period of time)" especially in instances when you have not seen/met someone, or if you haven't done something after a long time. Remember 久しぶり (hisashiburi)..? But not gokiburi!!!

Again, not really wrong but "walking feels so difficult" sounds better imo compared to "it's hard to walk."

Just FYI, in the raws when Megumi mentioned Tsumiki's name, it was written in katakana 「ツミキ」 - which normally indicates emphasis - instead of the kanji for her name 「津美紀」. However, Gege cleared it up in the author's comment [I accidentally saw it fufu] that it was his mistake; Tsumiki's name was supposed to be in kanji, not katakana. 🫡
Here, Tsumiki used 減らず口 (herazuguchi). From what I learned and know, the term means impudent talk or to speak without thinking. Sharp tongue, imo, is fine too. But if herazuguchi is an actual slang or something, I'm sorry that I don't know about it.

I believe daijōbu = "fine" or "all right" in this statement, but meh Idk.

Idk about yall but I often use "fine and dandy" in a sarcastic way so this official translation got me doing a double take. Fufu!
As I understood it, 「もっと大丈夫」 (motto daijōbu) literally means more alright/more okay, which obviously means better if things are already fine or will be fine. If I'm incorrect about this one or anything really, kindly correct me please, thank you!

Incorrect translation in the officials.
》 Yuuji: "Back then, after I saved Fushiguro, I should have just vanished."
Yuuji said 「消え」 (kie) which means to vanish, to fade away, to extinguish, or to die or die out. While one may assume he probably said it was better for him to have died, I think Yuuji meant it should have been better if he had ran away after saving Megumi-chan.

John Werry missed again. This translation that I offered is basically how I understood from the raws =)

Sukuna's name was written in katakana 「すくな」, but just like Tsumiki's case Gege said this was a mistake. His name should have been written in kanji 「宿儺」.

If you've been following nanami-says, a duo that help to address mistranslations in JJK, you'll know about the term "binding vow" which got mistranslated ever since early in the series.
“This is a binding vow”
⇒ “This is ‘binding’. A contract.”
The whole sequence where Sukuna explains “binding” (sometimes also translated as “restriction”) got mistranslated, which carried onto later chapters. It seems the translator combined “binding” and “contract” into “binding vow” but imo it looks more like they were meant to be separate sentences, with “contract” being an explanation Sukuna supplies for “binding”, as opposed to an actual part of the term. Anyway, whenever Sukuna says “binding vow” in this chapter afterwards, it’s actually “binding”. Actually, pretty much every time any character says “binding vow”, it’s just “binding” instead. (Except in the instances where the translators for some reason translated it yet differently.)

Also, just wanted to highlight that Werry decided to go with "boy" in the official translations when Sukuna called Yuuji 「小僧」 (kozou). Kozou originally and literally means a young monk in training but gradually it became another word for "young boy". It can also mean kid, or even brat, and can be used either affectionately or derogatorily.
In anime, though, kozou very often means brat, so yeah Werry should have just translated it as "brat" here like... Sukuna has always been one rude mf to anyone but Megumi-chwan right? So anyway, just remember that each time you see Sukuna says "boy" in this chapter or henceforth, he's saying "brat" actually.

》 Sukuna: "That binding [of] "I won't hurt anyone".. didn't include him!!"
Here, Sukuna was referring to the binding condition that he offered Yuuji (right panel for reference). In the raws, the "I won't hurt anyone" were in quotation marks; Sukuna is stating that by "anyone" he had meant everyone else EXCEPT Yuuji. [What a mean arsehole T.T]
As to why he said "What comes after this is a gamble." in several panels before, I believe it's because Sukuna never specified verbally to Yuuji that he won't be included in the "anyone" part.

》 Sukuna: "We'll [be able to] see something interesting."
》 Sukuna: "Didn't I say that..?"
This whole chunk was quite messed up, so I just wanted to correct it a little bit =)

my take on using chatgpt/ai/whatever in school work or academic settings etc is this..
when i was in secondary school, i did german and french, and our teachers always warned us not to use google translate on our work cos "we'll be able to tell!!"
and there were kids who still used it anyway, just copied things whole cloth from google translate and handed it in.. and obviously they got caught out instantly 😝
but what i used to do, was i'd google translate whatever it was i wanted.. and then go through it, correcting the grammar and parts i spotted were awkward or incorrect to make it as authentic as possible b4 handing it in.. and my teachers never realised this is what i did, and i thought i was soooo fucking smart outwitting them like heh, guess you can't really tell who's using google translate after all 😏
but ultimately i think my teachers had outwitted me, cos what they'd actually got me doing was applying knowledge and skills i wasn't even fully aware i had and using them in a practical sense, to what i guess must have been a pretty acceptable standard, seeing as i never got questioned abt my work?? 😳
so i think this can relate back to ai like.. obviously just handing in fully unaltered computer-generated works isn't the way, cos like, you aren't learning anything that way, it's just pointless and ur going to get caught out lol.. but if you can use these tools in a way that supplements your existing knowledge and skills, rather them trying to use them as a replacement for them well, i think there can be some worth in them then.. 🤔
like, there's always going to be tools that are ~controversial~ in education, but i don't think you can just write them off outright, it's abt figuring out the balance and how they can be utilised without like.. compromising actual learning?? 😆
