In the video game Sea Of Theives there is a love we develop for finding/plundering treasure from others. Gold, gems, relics, trinkets, chests, all included. Those things make us feel good because it makes us wealthy in the game. My friend Robby yesterday asked me what my treasure in heaven would be and to my surprise I thought of these items mentioned above , and i thought about if they were real and in my possession. i then quickly realized that 😳 something isn't right here. Gold, silver, whatever is all materialistic. Nothing compares to the true treasure in heaven. Jesus and his love are what we should be thinking to treasure. Everything we own on this earth is temporary and not important to the salvation that lies ahead with god. Then why do we sometimes put material things over god first? Because we aren't perfect, we make mistakes and that's okay. That's just part of being human. If you havent been putting god first, your not the only one, for a long time I've left my bible on the shelf untouched and dusty. I would turn my computer on instead every morning and play video games. But that's gonna change because i feel a stir in heart and its feeling more alive then ever, I want to fall in love with my creator and not with these material things. And god and i (as his humble servant) want to help you to have a desire to as well in whatever way possible. For His love is what sets us free.

blank canvas
you are not sullied
you are not spoiled
you are not a fraction of who you were
before all the mess
before all the mistakes
they handed you
a sheet of paper,
tore it as a metaphor
gave a piece to each romantic partner
until you were left
with only a sliver
they said that's all you would be
if you gave yourself away
listen, daughter
to my voice--
shame is not my method of teaching
my instruction comes through redemption,
healing and grace
I did not just restore you
I redeemed you.
I have made you new.
You are washed clean, child.
l
l
l
what You said to me
in my shame over my past,
my dirty choices--
where I felt embarrassed, ashamed, disgusting
You wipe me clean.
You love a blank canvas.

Question of the Week #5
Tumblr media
Is there any type of art that can not be done by a Christian? What is it? Why is it unChristian?
I think in order to answer this question you have to define what art is. Can anything be considered art? Art can cover many areas of expressing yourself, but where is the line? Dancing is considered an art form, but what about an exotic dancer? Sculpting is an art form, but what if they sculpted an idol? Painting murals is an art form, but what if it is tagging a building that is not yours?
I believe there is some “art” that cannot be done by a Christian. One might argue that the examples I gave above are not art, but there are people who believe they are. That is why I take the hard stance that not all art can be done by Christians. All of the mentioned art forms above, exotic dancing, sculpting idols, and tagging should not be done.
As Christians we have to make a distinction between right and wrong. Romans 14:20-21 says, “Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.” We are called to live a life as Christ did and not lead another brother or sister into sin. While one Christian may not feel guilt in participating in an art form, another Christian may. We need to stay away from all art practices that could lead to having your brother or sister in Christ  and ourselves to stumble. When deciding what art to pursue, we need to look at the convictions in our heart and what convictions it may lead others around us to have.
While there may be more more art that should not be done by Christians I am focusing on the three art forms. All three of these can lead people away from the gospel. Tagging can show people you do not have a respect for others property. Sculpting idols is a definite no go, there are many instances in the bible that show the repercussions of  creating idols. Exotic dancing can lead your mind to wander in places that it should not.  Matthew 5:27-28 tells us that just lusting in your mind is adultery. Therefore I will stand by these art forms not being good for Christians to pursue.

Discussion Recap - Already Claimed as Valuable
This week, during the class discussion, one thing that especially stood out to me was a comment that the professor made. She stated that art is already valuable, therefore, as an artist, one cannot fail. Our job as artists isn’t to create value or perfection, because God’s taken care of that part. Instead, we can strip the stress away and begin displaying that value in our own unique ways and through our individual processes. When this happens, failure isn’t even part of the equation - only a raw, unrestrained, whimsical kind of expression.
Another remark that Tina made during this class session was, “My creativity is not an accident.” If this is true, that means I can unapologetically and freely follow the creativity that God has placed inside of me. I wish I could remember this more often. I think if I did, not so many of my dreams would be crumpled up pieces of paper in the trashcan, and maybe some of my ideas would finally leave the drawing board.
So what would happen if you stopped striving for perfection or asking for permission in your creative endeavors?

Creative Manifesto
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Worry is a strange thing. You can find yourself worried about something that isn’t even a thing yet. Just the possibility and idea of it scares you. This was me when I found out my brother and his wife were going to have a baby. They were not married that long and are pretty young and I know that they are still figuring out their life. My family was hoping they would wait to have life more settled before starting a family of their own. But God has His own timing that is beautiful in its own way. My parents became stressed through this news and that put a toll on all of us as they live in a different state and it is hard to be there for them in this situation or if they need help. But then she came to visit and I got to come home to this beautiful and happy baby that loves life and gives off so much love I know everything will be alright. We are so thankful we are blessed to have such a joyful soul join our crazy family.
This is my creative manifesto because I wanted to tell a story through these photos that I took of my niece. A photo can tell a person a lot of things from the person in it, the mood and setting of the photo, and the place that it is in. At first glance, you see a happy babysitting in a park, but there is so much more to it. The amount of pain and sadness that was brought on before this wonderful joy can be told in a story around it. I wanted to be creative through this art and the past year of my life and looking at these photos. I wish I could have seen these photos when I found out the news a year ago and the peace that they bring me. The interesting thing is they probably have no meaning to other people, but these show me that Ruth will be okay and puts a smile on my face and peace in my soul. This is what I think art should do, and that makes a person feel emotions and see a story as everyone has one. My point of view is that there is so much more behind the art and that can not only come through photography, but also songs, poems, painting, sculptures, storytelling, movies, dancing, running, and so much more. This creative Christian class has shown me how to look further into myself to create such stories and art.
This art also ties into my faith and spiritual side. I had to pray and trust in the Lord when that worry hit my family and I. But looking a year later into the situation I see a beautiful baby girl that is so happy and easy to love. I can trust God more because of this and see my faith laid out in these photos. God also expresses his beauty through Ruth and His creative side in every one of her personality traits and image. There is a plan that God has for everything and we will never know His intentions but they are always for the good and these photos make me feel that way. If I was seeing this art for the first time it would bring me joy, but also understanding in how can anything bad in the world not be made better by seeing the true happiness here.

"Our Saviour loves us enough to be dissatisfied even in those moments when we are all too satisfied. He will not abandon the work of His hands... So you'll find yourself in situations you do not like. You'll find yourself having to deal with things you didn't plan. You'll find yourself dealing with trouble you never thought would enter your door. You'll face the unplanned, the unexpected, and the unwanted.
The reason you will is because your Lord will be using all of these hard and uncomfortable moments to wrench you out of your satisfaction, to cause you to esteem His redemption and to create heart-and-life-change that will not be created any other way.
Your Lord pries open your hands and takes away your crutches and distractions. He exposes your weaknesses so that you will cry out for what He knows you need, but what you have been willing to live without." (Paul David Tripp)
Read this quote this morning, and I couldn't help but feel like it was an exact summary of my past few months (and likely for many of you, too). He has exposed our distractions and our crutches. It has been unwanted and unexpected. But man, does He know what we need. And man, has He brought good fruit and incredible growth in hearts and minds in this season.

❝After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”❞

Manifesto
I will sit in the uncomfortable.
I will lean into the uncomfortable.
I will seek out the uncomfortable.
In order to grow I must be uncomfortable.
It is through the uncomfortable that I grow.
Through being uncomfortable I have found how to be comfortable.
There are two ways I have best seen this
My art. I sat in the uncomfortableness of doing something different and succeeded. The woodburning had a cursive font, which was a real struggle for me. My handwriting is like a 12 year old boy, so it was very daunting to think the entire piece was based on the font. BUT I leaned into the uncomfortable and it turned out amazing.
My sports. My form in my technical events were bringing my scores way down. My coach told me, I must sit in the uncomfortable positions to achieve the results we want. It has taken a lot of practice to get out of my usual, known positions and into the uncomfortable ones that will help me do better. Lately I have been leaning into the uncomfortableness and have been excelling in my events.
This image is a representation of the uncomfortableness I have to sit in. I sat in this little nook everyday at work and one day my friend Josh Aaron took it. I had to put myself and him in an uncomfortable position in order to achieve what I wanted. I have this picture printed out now and when I see it, I remember sitting in the uncomfortable is a good thing.
