From a storytelling standpoint, I can see why Emma had to die. The story doesn’t work if Dean has a child. It would change the dynamics because Dean would give up everything for his kid. Dean having a kid is a story arc for a whole season. HOWEVER I love the idea of Emma and she should have lived.

Single dad Dean is coping with having his 6-year-old daughter, Emma, home with a concussion after being bullied at school, and she's not taking to the "resting" part well.

For context, Lydia died when Emma was 3.

Much to Emma’s disappointment, when Sunday rolled around she hadn't slept well the night before, so was feeling tired and cranky. She still wanted to go on a playdate with Jack and his big cousin Claire – apparently dads were superfluous – but Dean put his foot down. With Emma in her room, crying and throwing her stuffies at the door, Dean pulled out his phone to text Cas. Dean: hey Sunshine. Emma’s having a very bad morning. Think she overdid it yesterday refusing to have a nap. It's just not a good plan to take her out, I don't want her to feel worse. Dean heard the heavy thump of something more substantial hitting Emma’s door and sighed, rubbing at his eyes. He knew she’d be upset even before he told her they couldn't see Jack, and Dean was just glad he hadn't mentioned the Butterfly Conservatory to her. Still, throwing stuffies was one thing. Other things could be broken, and that wasn't okay. He knocked on her door, being a stickler for giving her privacy, then opened the door. He found her sitting on her bed, her arms crossed as she glared at him, an adorable pout on her tear-streaked face. The door bumped against something more solid than a plush toy, and he glanced down. Her tiny black shoes – Charlie called them Mary Janes – sat behind the door, and there was a black streak on the door from the soles.  “Hey, sweetpea,” Dean said softly, picking up her shoes and tucking them back into her closet. He picked up a couple of her stuffies and set them back on her bed, then dropped to a crouch in front of her. “I know you're mad at me, Emma, but no wrecking your things. Your stuffies can't break, but you could knock over something, like one of your music boxes, and break it.” Fresh tears welled in her eyes, and she stared at him, her lip quivering. Lydia had given her the music boxes she had, and he knew the idea of something happening to them would be scary. Her tears spilled over, and she started to sob. Dean felt a pang of guilt. Maybe he should have mentioned the Star Wars lamp from Charlie and Stevie instead, but too late now. He held out his arms, and she fell into them, hiccoughing as she burrowed against his chest.

In which, Rory Mayfield finds herself in the world of Supernatural instead of her own.

Additionally, things only go further sideways once she meets two plaid wearing knuckleheads traveling in an old Impala...

Extended summary:

FEELING SO THE LOSS, she cannot but ever weep the mother.

Shoulders slumped under the weight of Death's hand, sixteen-year-old Rory could feel the waters at her feet, ready to pull her under. Expect a change of fate saves her, a happenstance thrusts her to her father, and she finds herself in the Supernatural world instead of her own.

Here, all the monsters under the bed are real – or at least could be. Behind every curtain is a devil in disguise, demons, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, wendigos and God knows what else. At every corner stands a risk, every snap of a twig could be the very difference between life and death. With dozens of monsters out in the wild and constantly preying for victims wherever they go, it's safe to say all hunters has their hands full at night. The life as a hunter is indeed time consuming and incredibly dangerous. Dean Winchester knows it's a bad idea to let her in, but he does so anyway. Rory Mayfield knows it's a bad idea to stick around, yet she stays. It's a bad idea. They know it. The thought and realization of it all repeatedly sinks into their bones, settles like a beast below, a monster molded in their marrow that they cannot unravel and eliminate.

This is a bad idea. They know it. But what other choice do they have? Rory's life in a completely different world was long gone, her mother was dead, and he was all she had left.

Dean might not know the first thing about how to be a stable father, but if there was one thing he did know, it was how to be there for someone who needed him. He is not going fail her, not if he has any say on the matter.

But shouldn't he know by now?

With him around, she can never, ever, truly be safe.

In the end, if he stays around, the only thing left of her could very well be nothing more than pictures to burn.

Scenes/Things in Supernatural that genuinely don't make sense to me if Dean was straight:

The confession booth scene.

Sam just rolling with the fact that Dean's siren is a guy while still thinking sirens infect people through sex.

Dean being flustered by several men: Gunner Lawless, Aaron, Doctor Sexy, etc.

All the parallels between Destiel and other couples. (A big one being "last night on Earth" bc how do you do that accidentally.)

Having all the gay jokes be on Dean instead of Sam.

Paralleling Sam meeting his childhood celebrity crush with Dean meeting Gunner Lawless.

The boner Dean got when Cas cleaned up.

Dean gulping after Cas does an impression from a Western movie.

Charlie, a lesbian, calling Castiel "dreamy."

The way Mary looks at Dean and Cas when they hug.

Dean wondering why everyone assumes he's gay, while Sam not caring.

The logic that Charlie can't flirt with guys because she's only attracted to women, but then having Dean flirt with the guy for her.

Dean seeming disappointed when learning that Aaron's flirting was fake.

The amount of time Dean and Cas spend staring at each other.

Dean canonically having an orgy with Crowley.

A woman saying that she knows when someone's pining for someone else to Dean, just for us to learn that Dean was never in love with Amara.

The set design and script choices that lead to a cross in the background while Dean said "I do." to Cas after he came back to life.

Edit: To the people who say I can't use the siren as an example because the siren is supposed to be his brother, and therefore his siren being a man doesn't work. If you reread that bullet point, then you will realize that I didn't put it down as just simply Dean's siren being a man. I recognize that the siren is supposed to be his brother. It's the fact that Sam still thinks the siren infects people through sex, not knowing that it's actually through saliva when he realizes who the siren is. So when he sees that Dean's siren is a guy, he had to assume they had sex, and he does not seem surprised by this at all.

Do you guys ever think about how canonically the vessels that angels occupy aren’t supposed to age (s12e10 when Cas is impressed his buddies kept their same vessels for well over a century. Also apparently Cas tells Jimmy when he first was requesting permission to inhabit his body, that Jimmy would not age while he was doing so.)

…but Castiel definitely ages. Obviously I get that this is simply because Misha himself is aging, but *my* in-universe headcanon is that he’s choosing it, (whether consciously or unconsciously) because he wants to grow old with Dean.
