In the times of Jesus, the people of Israel were fundamentally agricultural and cattle-raising people, that is why many parables of Jesus are referred to these activities, Jesus is the good shepherd (John 10:11-16), Jesus is the sower.
That is why Jesus, alluding to agriculture, gives us a teaching that explains that there are no intermediate attitudes towards him, we are friends or enemies of the Lord: "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters" Matthew 12:30.
Gather with our friend Lord Jesus means sharing together his spiritual path, his path of mercy (compassion, kindness) following the example of the father of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), and his path of righteousness (golden rule, Matthew 7:12) following the example of the Good Samaritan. The spiritual way of master Jesus is the likeness to the Father: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” Matthew 5:48, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” Luke 6:36.
If our desire is fundamentally to be happy we cannot be blessed like our Lord Jesus, the desire for happiness is a selfish desire, the beatitude with God requires the desire for the good. The desire for happiness leads us to the love for money, but the desire for the good to God: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money", Matthew 6:24.
If we choose instead the path of sin, our path is completely opposite to that of Jesus, the virtue of faith alone is not enough, we need it to be accompanied by upright living: "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, ´You have faith, I have deeds.´ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds" James 2:17-18.
The Kingdom of God consists in choosing between good and evil.

In today's Gospel text, those who wonder about Jesus are the closest ones, those from his land. It is precisely they, who believe they know Jesus well and perhaps for this reason, who feel incapable of discovering in that very everyday face, in the son of a woman from the town, the God who comes to meet them. It could be said that they have a defined and prior image of who Jesus is and cannot open up to a deeper truth about Him. Something similar happens to us. We have too fixed images on the realities and people before us. Often we have decided what they can give of themselves, what we can expect from them; they are too “normal”, too “normal” for us and it is hard for us to discover that God is there, present and alive. That it is precisely, through the small, from where God acts and manifests his transforming love.

The gospel of Mark relates that in the time of Jesus, the arrival of the Messiah and the day of judgment were associated with an ancient prophecy about Elijah, who is said to have not died but was taken to heaven: "See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes" Malachi 4:5.
And while Jesus was developing his ministry in Galilee, the gospel of Mark relates that his disciples, moved by the teachings of the Pharisees and the doctors of the law, asked him about the return of this mysterious prophet. And so Jesus taught his disciples that the prophecies of the Old Testament should not be interpreted literally but in a figurative sense. Jesus identified the prophet Elijah with the figure of John the Baptist without saying it openly. The Kingdom of Heaven, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, was coming to fulfillment with Jesus, and all the prophecies were coming true.
And with these words, Jesus remembered the life of John the Baptist, who baptized with water in the Jordan for the forgiveness of sins:
"And they asked him, ´Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?´
Jesus replied, ´To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him´" Mark 9:11-13.
This teaching of Jesus is a reminder of an important sapiential teaching: "My child, when you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for trials" Ben Sira 2:1. In a world given over to sin, those who wish to serve God must be prepared for the contempt of those who love the things of the world.

Mark 12:13-17
Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech.
They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone's opinion. You do not regard a person's status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?"
Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at."
They brought one to him and he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" They replied to him, "Caesar's."
So Jesus said to them, "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." They were utterly amazed at him.

Yes I know, it is challenging to actually live by in his words, especially in an Earthly environment or when you keep on encountering worldly people. But this is just a superficial challenge. If you walk in faith, and let him work within you. Things will be easy. And just like his promise, eternal is better than what’s temporary. 💜
