Pokemon Card of the Day #2589: Dark Vileplume (Team Rocket)
Tumblr media
Dark Vileplume was the kind of Pokemon that completely changed the game. It was the first to block Trainer cards, a type of card that filled over half of some decks and made strategies work. It was supposed to be balanced by also affecting the Dark Vileplume user, but since the person with Dark Vileplume had prepared for it in deck building it really just resulted in a one-sided thing. That’s not to say that it was unbeatable, as a counter existed and luck could still be a factor. It does mean that it’s the type of Pokemon that really needs a second look around here, as stall has become much more popular among players going to earlier formats and Dark Vileplume’s situation has changed over the last several years as a result.
Despite what I said about Dark Vileplume being powerful, its stats were awful. 60 HP was just sad for a Stage 2, being lower than the top Basic Pokemon. It did mean that if Wigglytuff did somehow get fully set up, which wasn’t too easy but was possible if said deck got a Muk up or Dark Vileplume’s player had a slow set-up, it wouldn’t be safe. To be fair, blocking Gust of Wind and Double Gust made Dark Vileplume way safer than you’d expect, but the low HP was notable nonetheless. The Fire Weakness did cause a bit of extra damage from Magmar in Base Set-focused formats, with Arcanine and Blaine’s Rapidash also taking advantage. It meant a bit less in Neo formats as the type’s attackers were generally stronger there, though Typhlosion certainly wasn’t going to complain about being able to KO even if it tried to play around with Metal Energy. Dark Vileplume also needed 2 Energy to retreat. While getting it stuck up front wasn’t too common, it was a notable possibility if someone did get a Muk in play.
Hay Fever was an incredibly strong Pokemon Power that simply blocked all Trainer cards from being used. There was no limit on what kind of Trainer here, they were all unusable. This slowed games down to a halt, with the biggest impact being in Base formats where Trainers were usually the only decent way of getting through a deck. When Kangaskhan was a main exception you know things are bad. It did affect the user too, so it required some skill, but the strategy was generally to get Dark Vileplume up as soon as possible and build up a bulky attacker that didn’t have to care about Energy Removal in those formats. It was best in the Base-Rocket onto the Base-Gym formats in this case, only worrying a bunch about Muk, which wasn’t always free to get into play but completely wrecked the strategy. Some partners include Dark Golduck, which evolved from the early Trainer-locking Psyduck, Snorlax that wasn’t affected by Pollen Stench flips, Alakazam and Mr. Mime to move small bits of damage around, and Dark Alakazam for pivoting. It should also be noted that while Dark Vileplume was still good in Prop 15/3, the lower amount of Trainers meant that people built decks differently in ways that could stand up a bit better to not being able to use those cards quite as much.
Base-Neo and Rocket-On weren’t quite as good for Dark Vileplume to some extent, though obviously Hay Fever was still quite powerful. Cleffa’s existence, as well as Igglybuff’s to an extent, provided ways to potentially make progress. Dark Vileplume still had partners to be quite good, however. Erika’s Victreebel could eventually force a switch, and Murkrow could lock a Pokemon into place while Trainers were locked down. That could be very hard to get out of and made even Baby Pokemon, that forced flips to attack successfully, quite a risk. The slower format in general did give more potential ways out for some decks, however, so while Dark Vileplume was still one of the better Pokemon especially in Rocket-On it wasn’t quite as obviously dominant there.
Petal Whirlwind, on the other hand, wasn’t worth using. The potential damage output wasn’t bad. 3 flips for 30 damage on each heads was usable for 3 Grass Energy. The problem was that 2 or more heads made Dark Vileplume Confused, which shut off Hay Fever. You needed a second Dark Vileplume to keep Hay Fever up, and even if you had that you then couldn’t use Trainers to safely retreat the Confused one. Dark Vileplume needed to rely entirely on other Pokemon to attack.
Blocking every Trainer was so powerful that games with it early on tended to be decided very quickly, even if said game technically dragged on for a while. Trying to find an out to Dark Vileplume locking Trainers when ways to strip a hand early was extremely tough, especially if the person using the card went first. The game eventually got some ways to work around it, and Muk always worked if it did get into play, but even a good counter existing didn’t prevent Dark Vileplume from being one of the top Pokemon out there. This card was also the start of the long line of disruptive Vileplume cards that have seen high-level play over the years. If playing a different format and a Vileplume shows up to ruin your day, you can thank this card for the idea. If playing the older formats, you’ll probably run into this sometimes, though some players intentionally avoid using it to get more fun match-ups where Trainers are allowed. It affects the game that much.

Note
Would you describe your primary partner Pokémon as popular? (Examples are subjective; use your own judgment!)
Yes, incredibly popular and well-liked (Eevee evos, starters, Zorua, Gengar, Clodsire...)
Yes, so popular it's considered "basic" (Pikachu, Charizard, Gardevoir, Lucario...)
Yes, it's a legendary figure (Kyogre, Xerneas, Solgaleo...)
Enjoys pretty decent popularity with the general public (Fidough, Slowpoke, Ceruledge, Metagross, Shinx...)
Totally Average Popularity (Vileplume, regional birds, Glalie...)
Not popular, but its enthusiasts love it (Vivillon, Purugly, Minior, fossil Pokémon...)
Often forgotten by everyone (Paras, Finneon, Klefki, Bunnelby...)
Nobody really knows what this thing is (UBs, myths, archaic forms, undocumented Pokémon...)
Well-known and actively disliked (Toxapex, Carvanha, Mr. Mime, many ghost and dark types...)
Incredibly well-phrased. Unfortunately I have to cut the pokemon parts because the poll options have a character limit, but yeah, read the above.
Reblogs are appreciated.

Dndads characters as Pokémon!
Idk why but i’m trying to see what pokemon each dndad character would be (or at least untill i get bored of the idea) so im gonna do a poll to see what the ppl think. The dads go first !!
Starting with our crunchy munchy hippie dad Henry oak!
Tumblr media
Pictures of the pokemon and expanding on the explanations below the cut ✂️
Psyduck
Tumblr media
Look at this dumb anxious creature, doesn’t it just give off the pure essence of Henry Oak! Not only that, but when psyduck is under pressure or over whelmed it starts panicking and freaking out, just like Henry when he has one of his Henry Moments ™️ and starts yelling at one of the other dads
Also, psyduck has random moments where his psychic powers come to him and he’s really powerful. And this reminds me exactly of Henry in the beginning of the first season when he felt the surge of energy through his body and his powers would suddenly come to him
Bidoof
Tumblr media
Idk, just something about this Pokémon reminds me of him… maybe its the crunchy munchy-ness of it. And also, looks like (or is close enough to) his wombat form!
Bulbasaur
Tumblr media
The looks of this pokemon also kinda reminds me of Henry, especially the plant theme, but its mostly the vines that the Pokémon uses, just like how Henry uses vines for entangle
Meganium
Tumblr media
just vibes honestly
Shaymin
Tumblr media
Also just vibes and the overall plant theme, but i think it would be funny
Gogoat
Tumblr media
I don’t really get henry vibes from this one just because it has a more serious expression, but henry being a goat Pokémon just makes sense to me and also it has a bit of a “crunchy munchy” look
Vileplum
Tumblr media
Stinky and plant themed, just like our boy henry!
Mimikyu
Tumblr media
Its kinda like how on the outside we see a pikachu costume but on the inside is a dark creature, and its almost the how on the outside we see henry, but inside him is an eldritch being (the doodler) but i know its not like the doodler is wearing Henry as a costume or to hide itself (unless you interpret it that way?), but it just makes me think about Henry and how he inherited the doodler within him

“You are challenged by Gym Leader Leshy!”
Leshy was very interesting to design because I wanted to keep his chaos by giving him major ‘youngest sibling who dresses themselves’ energy but this kind of clashed with the fact that, as a bishop, he’d have to look somewhat regal. I settled with giving him a vest and making the outfit uneven in many places. He looks younger than I wanted him to look but that’s fine. My Pokémon team choices are explained below:
My notes read: “Chaotic, worm, plants. He lives in Darkwood, surrounded by camellias and leaves. Dark and plant types?”
Despite Leshy being one of my favorite Bishops, I don’t really have much to say regarding my thought process for his team. The shiny Tangela looked the most like his canon design, the plant Burmy was similar as well, the Vileplume represents the camellias in his domain, etc.
The only noteworthy thing is that, with the exception of Vileplume, I gave Leshy pre-evolved Pokemon. I did this because he’s both the youngest of the bishops and the first boss you defeat in the game.

New fused pokemon

Nessonrer
The Soaring Neon Pokemon
Typing is mono Electric type, with the ability Levitate. The name is a combo of Neon and Essorer which is old French for soar. Now the reason why this pokemon is French (or should I say Kalosian) is because of some new lore I have accidentally made for the origins of Team Pastiche and it all came from a dream, a very, very, dark dream.
Kalos is at war with someone, not sure who but they seem very willing to kill pokemon, not faint, K I L L.
The opposing army as a way to depleat Kalos's resources creates heavily fortified dams and watch towers. Preventing anyone from getting into Kalos or get out of Kalos, sending constant bombardments to force the Kalosian army into the Catacombs of luminos city, hide in bunkers in the more rural areas of Kalos or take their chances in the wild dangerous wilderness of the mountains. With these bombardments it made transporting supplies and resources to the people and army created a scarcity of food especially for pokemon. This was part of the enemy army's plan, to create a strain on kalos's supplies and make their pokemon start to go hungry. This would either lead to pokemon to retaliate against their trainers or abandon their trainers in order to search for food. This desperation would lead pokemon to be left open to being killed by the enemies attacks and create more problems with supply movement. This description would lead pokemon trying to get past the dams and watchposts where the enemy would have been waiting to gun down any pokemon they see, digging won't work either cuz the dams and watch towers were built with seismic wave detectors to sense movement within the earth aka people or pokemon trying to escape or get in by digging. By using a combination of Koffing and Weezing smoke, Vileplume toxic pollen, Grimer and Muk fumes, Dustox dust, venomoth powder, stunky and Skunktank gas, foongus and Amonguss spors and Revavroom exhaust they created a highly poisonous gas that would either kill a pokemon or cause the pokemon to faint and be unavailable to move long enough to starve to death while any human would die from the poisonous compound. Now here is where the already dark story gets darker. The enemy army would take the dead remains or the extremely exhausted and or injured pokemon into the fortified dams turn out to be the enemies bases. This would be the reason behind how the dams would have constant surveillance and firepower to take care of opposing people and pokemon along with have supplies for themselves. Now what did they do with the dead bodies or the nearly dead pokemon? They would use their bodies to either create weapons that could kill pokemon more effectively or to create new pokemon....fused pokemon. Yes the enemy Kalos had been fighting would be the origins of Team Pastiche. Thankfully one day one of the Dam Bases got hit by a huge counter attack that caused the dame to collapse and break....this caused a flood to happen and Kalos's key to success washed up to their feet.....Fused pokemon......pokemon they had never seen before. Pokemon that neither side fully understood the possibilities and capabilities of. Capabilities yet to be seen by any trainer
Tumblr media
Tune in next time for the ground breaking revaluation of Kalos's fusion freedom

Pokemon Card of the Day #3127: Light Machamp (Neo Destiny)
Tumblr media
Light Machamp had some interesting traits. Getting a minor heal and a free switch with Evolution could be pretty useful if enough Energy was in play to attack right away, and the hit against Dark Pokemon and Darkness-types was nice when it worked. This was all put on an attacker with decent power. There was already some competition for the Fighting-type with interesting traits role, most notably with Donphan due to an equal base damage output, so separation would be needed to get this to see use.
100 HP was a very solid number, though one that was kind of needed on a Stage 2. Only the biggest hits would get a KO right away, such as a well set-up Feraligatr or a Blaine's Arcanine. More likely you'd see this go down in 2, which meant trading blows was rather doable. A Psychic Weakness meant that you were relying a ton on coin flips against Dark Gengar and were in trouble if Espeon showed up. The Retreat Cost here was 2, and the goal was to get Energy in play well enough to let another Light Machamp take over so you never needed to worry about it. In practice, you'd probably retreat at least once during a game.
Tag Team was a fun Pokemon Power, but did limit when you wanted to evolve. If Light Machamp was played from your hand to evolve a Pokemon on the Bench, you removed 3 damage counters from your Active Pokemon. You then switched Light Machamp with your Active Pokemon. There was no choice here, so you had to only evolve when ready to attack. The possible exception was if you just wanted to use it as a pivot using Balloon Berry, which wasn't usually what you wanted to do but also gave a chance to conserve Energy or get a desperate heal in. It was nice to have some of these plays available even if it was also awkward at times.
Beatdown, against most Pokemon, did 50 damage. This was pretty solid against most things, taking most opponents down in 2 hits. IT should be noted that it fell a little short against important Pokemon like Feraligatr and Steelix, howver, which was a problem. The side effect only came into effect if targeting a Darkness-type Pokemon or a Pokemon with Dark in its name. This got you a coin flip, and heads added 50 more damage. 100 for 3 was absurd in this era, and was a KO against the likes of Dark Feraligatr, Umbreon, Dark Vileplume, and even Dark Gengar through the Resistance. This was, of course, if you got the flip, which made it less nice than you might expect it to be sometimes.
Light Machamp was all about match-ups. It was quite good at messing with Dark Feraligatr if it got even decent luck, and the healing and pivoting could be really annoying for any deck trying to run Murkrow. On the other hand, it was atrocious against Feraligatr and wasn't too good at facing Steelix or Crobat either. If you really expected to see those good match-ups a lot, Light Machamp was a very capable deck. If you expected some other sort of mix and still wanted to go with a Fighting-type, Donphan could be way more annoying to deal with due to being able to hide behind a Baby Pokemon a bunch, so that was worth considering instead. Giovanni's Machamp was also worth looking at as well, but Light Machamp had its good moments.

Team Rocket set (Update)
Three more cards for the Team Rocket set!
Dark Vileplume (13/82) Here Comes Team Rocket! (15/82) Rocket's Sneak Attack (16/82)
I purchased a Dark Machamp card too but it hasn't arrived in the mail today. At the moment, I am three cards away from completing this set!
Dark Vileplume could have been in better condition, but it was an excellent price. The quality of the other two cards exceeded what I expected they would be. Overall I am quite satisfied.

There are so many interesting takes. Typing, Attacks, Abilities, Rarity, Evolution.
Why are some Pokemon dual typed and others not? Why some only after evolution? If two Floragato are trained alongside each other, both treated the exact same way, but only one evolves into Meowscarda, would the other still not gain the Dark Type?
Why do some Pokemon only learn certain attacks, or don't learn others? Magikarp is a fish, why shouldn't it know attacks like Aqua Jet or Watergun?
What exactly determines if a Pokemon is a Legendary or not? Entei's dex entry says every time it roars, a new Entei is born. In the 4th movie, we've seen countless Celebi, so it can't be if there's only one. And if we go by strength, then some of them are still outmatched by other, non legendary Pokemon.
How do wild Kadabra, Haunter or Machoke evolve if we need to trade them once they're caught? Or wild Galarian Yamask. Why do the evolution stones only effect some Pokemon, not all of them? Did the stone evolution like Bellossom or Vileplum just not exist before the stones came to light? Or did Pokemon, with time and more exposure to the stones, loose their ability to evolve without them?
So many topics!
SOOOO MANY TOPICS!! God I got my own questions too, like why do some abilities completely disappear and get replaced by a new, unrelated one? Bagon's Sheer Force is a brilliant ability that they completely lose once they're a Shellgon in favor of Overcoat, and somehow it becomes Moxie when it's a Salamence. WHAT??? And then it's normal ability, Rock Head, also gets lost once it becomes a Salamence for Intimidate, when you would THINK that a fucking SALAMENCE is INTIMIDATING ENOUGH.
Oh, and I have THOUGHTS on Legendary Pokémon!!! There's no way there's only a singular of every Legendary, otherwise we wouldn't have Tobias, or a reason for Battle Facilities to outright ban legendary Pokémon. Legends Arceus gives us some interesting ideas, like the fact that it gives you a fragment of itself rather than the Real Deal. Celebi is interesting, too, because you can't know if all the Celebi are the same Celebi— time travel makes it possible for there to be multiple of the exact same Celebi to exist at once! But also, we DO know there's other Celebi because of Explorers of Sky, PINK CELEBI. So, is it that there's just multiple, or it's the same Pokémon split into multiple fragments of itself, or is it that there's offspring of the original, while the main Legendary is the True Holder of the Legendary status?
And what is up with priority moves? Why do they completely disregard a Pokémon's natural speed? Is there more strain in using priority moves when your speed is lower? Is there a way to measure that?
Also why is it that Magikarp and Feebas are essentially almost the exact same Pokémon with their stats switched? Why is it that Feebas' move pool, specifically its TM move pool, INSANE in comparison to Magikarp? What is it about Magikarp that makes it incapable of doing the same moves as Feebas despite them being nearly identical?
My personal favorite question. WHY IS THERE ONLY A SINGULAR MOVE THAT DOES DUAL-TYPE DAMAGE? Why the FUCK is Hawlucha the only Pokémon capable of dealing dual-type damage?! Except, of course, Cosplay Pikachu, who is apparently a FREAK OF NATURE???

Playing around with Pokémon Teams for the Marble Hornets characters because I’m combining my interests and keeping the ones I believe were mentioned in a livestream? (Jay with Furret and Alex with Cyndaquil? Is that right?)
And a surprise to no one, I’m going ham with Hoody!Brian specifically.
It would be SO SO easy to make almost the entirety of his team ghost type but I’m spreading it out a little. I’m giving him a lot of Pokémon you would probably find in abandoned buildings (Joltik, Aron, Duskull) so far because it just fits so well. Most of his team evolves at least once because he has a lot of time to train them. He aims to beat Alex and it never feels like enough.
I gave him an Oddish/Gloom that eventually evolves into a Vileplume because him having a grass type Pre-MH feels very fitting for him but it eventually evolving into a Pokémon that’s best known for its overwhelming toxins because he wants to use it against Alex… yeah.
Speaking of, Alex also has a Lycanroc. It’s Rocky. Rocky gets stuck in Lycanroc’s Midnight Form after an incident with the Operator. Also Alex’s Cyndaquil commits a lot of canonical arson.
I definitely want Tim to end up with one of Brian’s Pre-MH pokemon and I might also give him a Cubone that eventually evolves into a Marowak because I feel like he’d take care of it well.
Jay is getting a Flaafy that eventually evolves into Ampharos who helps charge his laptop and is his flashlight in dark places.
Not sure if I’ll fully give Skully a team but if I do, Dusknoir is absolutely going on it.
Still deciding on the rest but you get the idea!!
