A moral dilemma

My neighbor called me Wednesday to say that a deer had been hit by a car on our road; the driver had departed the scene and the deer was alive, thrashing around between my neighbor's mailbox and mine.

Knowing I'm a gun-owning hunter, he wondered if I would be willing to come over and put the deer out out of its misery.

I weighed my options:

I could suggest to the neighbor that he call the sheriff’s office and report the incident. Maybe a deputy would come by to put the deer down. In an hour ...? Three ... ? The next day ...?

I could load my 12-gauge shotgun, walk down my driveway and end the deer’s suffering in five minutes. No doubt the deer would be too mangled for human consmpton. But after shooting it, I could drag the carcass into the tall bushes and let nature take its course.

No doubt the second option would be illegal in several ways, but did my allegiance rightfully belong to a higher law ...?

Ya'll want to know the funniest shit?

I'm researching the era when Alastor was alive right now to get a better idea of both his character, the life he lived before Hell, and to hash out a backstory for him.

And so, apparently, Alastor lived through the Prohibition (which was basically the United States government illegalizing the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol because they thought it was the cause of a lot of domestic violence and child abandonment).

Alastor canonically died in 1933.

Do you know how long the Prohibition lasted?

From 1920-1933.

ALASTOR LITERALLY DIED THE SAME YEAR ALCOHOL BECAME LEGAL AGAIN. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BITTER HE MUST'VE BEEN?

The Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933, and now my headcanon is that Alastor died December 6, 1933. Literally the day after he could legally drink all the booze he wanted.

I am learning a LOT about New Orleans and the era Alastor lived through (including the gay community in the city at the time) which has been a lot of fun, and I just wanted to share that tidbit because it is so fucking funny to me.

The sad and most frustrating thing about Leopardstar's Honor (and other recent books tbh) is that the Erins seem to be under the impression that a POV character can't be antagonistic or evil or wrong because since these are 'kid books' they all have to be 'role models' or 'relatable'

Which is such a bizarre writing choice to me. Because we have characters like Clear Sky who in any other point of view is 'hate that guy; he's the Worst' but in his own or his brother's is 'poor sad guy; he doesn't /want/ or /like/ being mean' 🥺🥺🥺

It ends up being such a disservice to fans of antagonistic characters. Villains were some of my favorite characters to watch growing up but I never tried to emulate them and if I was a kid, reading the books, I think I'd be a bit upset seeing Leopardstar, Onestar, Blackstar and so on being 'defanged' so that they could be better protagonists :/

Silly spiel aside, I'm happy you're almost done with the book and can proceed to never look at it again

they managed to tell coherent stories with mapleshade, tigerstar, and scourge....so im just inclined to believe that the reason it's written this way is because the authors genuinely do not recognize leopardstar as being bad that she is not just a good person at heart who was mislead but someone who was just as complicit and corrupt as tigerstar. i feel like if the authors saw her as a villain, we'd have gotten a much different story....

probably a better story too, there is no reason she needed a whole super edition. the recapping is mind-numbingly boring and anything original is infuritating or retcons to sandpaper leopardstar down into a boring shell of her tpb self.

i literally cannot recommend this book, just go reread the first arc if you want a good female antagonist
