Today's throwback is how in my neighborhood, Drug Emporium (1977-2001) became Longs Drugs (1938-2008), then the building became a Lowes hardware store. So this bag is not technically vintage yet since it's under 25 years old, but the chain is long gone [except in Hawai'i, where CVS kept the name on 50 stores].

Until 1965, there were two Saks department stores in Manhattan. Saks Fifth Avenue was a palace of luxury, while its older namesake, Saks 34th Street, catered to the masses with moderate-priced clothing. Located on the southwest corner of 34th and Broadway, it opened five weeks before its neighbor across the street, Macy's. This photo was taken some time in the 1930s.
The building was an elegant limestone structure designed by Buchman & Fox in the Classical style. But after Saks shuttered, it became a branch of Korvette's, a discount retailer, and in the 1980s was turned into a vertical mall that nobody goes to and sheathed in blue reflecting glass, masking the facade.

I’ve made it to the trivia big time, folks. My round suggestion was accepted. Excited to see what they do with this.

I am currently working at a Goodly William thrift store as a cashier and I have had a time of it.
Anyway, I was checking this customer out and she had two cds: a metal band I can't recall and Hilary Duff. I asked if she had checked the cds, she hadn't, so I checked and said that the Hilary Duff had a skip ring on it, but it wasn't bad and should play okay.
She said 'Oh, that's fine. I collect them for the aesthetics. They're so cool, like some sort of lost technology.' and inflicted psychic damage on me. I just paused for a second and I'm glad I at least had a face mask on to hide the confusion, read her total, and had to tell her we don't have a tap reader.
I need a new job asap...
