Breath of Fire fanart... like the original SNES one

The story always stuck with me because it positioned desire as an incredibly destructive force instead of the usual desire being solely limited to romantic triangles.

Disgaea 7 DLC Episode: Breath of Fire IV

Part 1: Ryu, A Dragon of Destiny

Fuji: "Alright, that was the last one."

Pirilika: "Did you really have to loot every bandit you see?"

Fuji: "Hey, they were about to loot us so they can think of it as karma."

Pirilika: "True, but who knows why they ended up as bandits in the first place? Maybe they were all struggling to survive or feed their families while the netherworld is under the cruel thumb of the shogunate."

Fuji: "Or they're just greedy. All that's left is to check inside that wagon they brought along."

Pirilika: "I thought you said you were done looting!"

Fuji: "Yeah, I said that was the body to loot. You really think I wasn't going to check out what treasure they stashed here?"

Pirilika: "Just don't expect me to carry any of it."

Fuji: "Your lost." Goes inside. "Let's see, plenty of gold and... the hell?!"

Pirilika: "What's wrong, Fuji?"

Fuji: Steps out of the wagon. "Piriko, get some clothes. NOW!!!"

-later...-

Pirilika: "So you got lost from your friends when you came here and those bandits picked you up while you were unconscious?"

Blue haired male: "Pretty much. I know it's not one of my best moments."

Fuji: "I'll say. There's not enough hellfire in this Netherworld that can burn my eyes from what I just saw."

Blue haired male: "I said I was sorry. I swear I had my clothes on when I fell asleep!"

Pirilika: "Being separated from your friends and having bandits rob you down to your clothing while you were sleeping. How cruel! You've already been through so much."

Blue haired male: "It's alright. At least I still have my sword, so I should be okay looking for them."

Pirilika: "Wait, you're not going to try to find them on your own, are you? You should let us tag along! It'll be much easier if we look together."

Blue haired male: "I think I'll be fine, but I won't mind the help. Speaking off, I do feel a little stiff right now. I better stretch a little first."

Fuji: "If it's a warm up you need, I can help out with that."

Blue haired male: "Really?"

Fuji: "Yeah, we can go for a few rounds. Give you a taste of Hinomoto treatment."

Pirilika: "No fair! You never offered me that when we first met!"

Fuji: "Shut it, Piriko."

Blue Haired Male: "Alright, Fuji. You're on! Let's see what you got!"

Fuji: "You asked for it! Time to do my worst!"

Pirilika: "Wait, how is it a sparring session if you're going all out?!"

Part 2: Wyndian Princess, Nina

Fuji: "Not bad, kid. You're a lot tougher than you look."

Ryu: "Thanks, but the name's Ryu."

Pirilika: "Do you remember what you were doing before you got lost from your friends?"

Ryu: "We came to Hinomoto after hearing about the infernal weapons and wanted to look into it, but when we got here, I remember being shot down by some sort of beam."

Pirilika: "You were shot down?"

Ryu: "I was carrying my friends while flying around in my dragon form."

Pirilika: "You're a dragon too? That means you're like Fuji!"

Ryu: "Wait, you're a dragon, Fuji? That's so cool! Can I see your dragon form?"

Fuji: "Yeah, not that kind of dragon."

Pirilika: "Lame!"

Fuji: "Like you're one to talk, Piriko! I don't see you turning into a cat anytime soon!"

Pirilika: "I'm only half kitty! What's your excuse, dragon boy?!"

Ryu: "Hey, stop fighting! Didn't you say you're going to help me look for my friends?"

-meanwhile...-

Angel(?): "I still don't see any sign of him."

Talking armor: "Ershin says she is ready to start paying her respects."

Angel(?): "We can't give up, Ershin! Ryu's got to be around here! I just know it!"

Ershin: "You do recall that Ershin can sense Ryu's energy as a fellow endless, right? Is what Ershin says."

Angel(?): "Oh, right. Wait, why didn't you remind me and start leading the way then?"

Ershin: "You looked so determined to take charge that Ershin didn't want ruin your fun. Hahahahahaha! Says Ershin."

Angel(?): "It's not funny! Ryu must be hurt after what happened. We need to get to him as soon as we can."

Ershin: "Well, it would be bad if Ryu perished before we reach the imperial capital. Very well. Fly up and take a quick look north. Says Ershin."

Angel(?): "Okay." Flies up for a few moments and flies back down. "I think I saw a bandit camp over there. Wait, does that mean Ryu's been captured by bandits?!"

Ershin: "You tell me. Is what Ershin says."

Angel(?): "We're coming Ryu!" Runs.

-later...-

Pirilika: "I'm just saying, you'd be a whole lot cooler if you could transform too, Fuji. You could breathe fire on any foe that gets in our way!"

Fuji: "I can't naturally use fire! The flames I emit came from years of hard training!"

Ryu: "Maybe I should go on my own after all..."

Angel(?): "Ryu!"

Ryu: "Huh? Nina?"

Nina: "There you are! I'm so glad you're alright! You're not hurt too bad, are you?"

Ryu: "I'm fine. I was about to ask you that."

Pirilika: "Oh hey, one of the friends managed to find us after all."

Fuji: "Well, that makes things a bit easier."

Nina: "Ryu, get back! I'll protect you from these bandits!"

Pirilika: "What?! We're not bandits!"

Fuji: "To be fair, we're both wanted so she's not completely wrong."

Pirilika: "Not helping Fuji!"

Ryu: "Wait, you're wanted?!"

Pirilika: "It's a long story. Just hear us out first!"

Nina: "You'll pay for hurting Ryu!"

Part 3: Deis's loyal Ershin.

Ryu: "Nina, these aren't the bandits that captured me earlier!"

Nina: "They're not?"

Ryu: "No. They were about to help me look for you actually."

Pirilika: "Yeah. Fuji defeated the real bandits not too long ago!"

Fuji: "Got plenty of their stuff if you want me to prove it."

Nina: "Oh, I-I'm sorry. When I saw Ryu near the camp, I just rushed in to help without thinking."

Pirilika: "It's okay. You were just worried about your friend. I completely understand."

Ryu: "Hang on, where's Ershin? They're not with you?"

Nina: "I thought Ershin was right behind me when I took off running."

Fuji: "Ershin? You two got a master?"

Nina: "Not really. How do I put this?"

Ershin: "I take it the bandits have been delt with? Says Ershin." walks in.

Pirilika: "What... is that?"

Ershin: "Looks like a suit of armor."

Ryu: "That would be Ershin."

Ershin: "It is a pleasure to meet you all. Is what Ershin said."

Fuji: "Any reason why it's speaking in third person?"

Pirilika: "Maybe that's just how it communicates, Fuji. Is what Pirilika said. It's very nice to meet you as well, Ershin. Says Pirilika."

Ershin: "Please do not mock the armor."

Pirilika: "Is what Ershin said, right?"

Ershin: "No. Ershin said no such thing. In fact, Ershin is laughing a lot right now."

Fuji: "Can someone please explain what's going on before I cut whatever this Ershin thing is down?!"

Pirilika: "Says Fuji."

Nina: "Ershin is actually the name of the suit of armor. The reason why it's speaking in third person is because there's an endless named Deis inside the armor, and Ershin is telling us what Deis is saying. Not only that, but Ershin refers to Deis as its master."

Pirilika: "Is what Nina said."

Fuji: "That's enough 3rd person, Piriko! Anyway, endless? You're telling me there's a goddess shoved inside that thing?"

Ryu: "You know about the endless?"

Fuji: "Not a lot. I just know that they're powerful immortal beings from some far away world."

Ershin: "Looks like someone hasn't done enough of their homework. Is what Ershin said."

Fuji: "Alright goddess, why don't you stop hiding in that tin can and say it to my face?!"

Deis: "Ershin says that will not be possible unless you have a suitable vessel for her to possess. Or better yet, you could enter the armor yourself and we can chat face to face."

Fuji: "How about a third option, little miss Alphonse?! I cut down that suit of armor of yours and drag you out here myself!"

-after the battle...-

Fuji: "Damn. A goddess really must be in there if this rust bucket can take all those blows."

Ershin: "Feeling convinced now? Ershin asked."

Pirilika: "It's not often I see someone getting away with poking fun at Fuji so casually."

Nina: "Deis is pretty sassy."

Ryu: "That's putting it mildly."

Ershin: "Come on, you're making it sound like I'm difficult to work with. Says Ershin."

Nina: "Well, since we're all together again, let's go look into those infernal treasures."

Pirilika: "If it's infernal treasures you're looking for, then you've come to the right place. It just so happens that Fuji and I are also looking for the Infernal Treasures across Hinomoto!"

Ryu: "I guess this means you want to keep working together?"

Pirilika: "Of course! We can all stay in my ship and you'll all get your own room while you're with us. No need to worry about getting shot down by mysterious lasers again!"

Ershin: "You had Ershin at getting our own room. Says Ershin."

Nina: "It would be easier to have some help. Plus while we're on a ship, we don't have to worry about camping every night."

Fuji: "Keep in mind, just because you're some deity, doesn't mean we won't put you to work. You want to stick with us, you better earn your keep."

Ershin: "Ershin is already doing plenty of work by powering this armor. Said Ershin."

Ryu: "I'm not used to getting special treatment anyway."

Fuji: "Wait, you're an endless too, Ryu?"

Ryu: "Half endless actually. It's another long story. Hehe..."
