— dogtooth by tyler the creator, the theme from big wave by kaiyo (a little niche but it’s a banger), alcohol free by twice (shows in alfred’s bit oops!), i want you by savage garden, leão de bronze by quinteto ternura, and premier gaou by magic system.

not really a playlist for this piece but songs that i recommend you all listen to! 

> kabir!

— he goes into tourist traps willingly. he wholeheartedly goes into little shops just to get scammed by buying overpriced silly trinkets. kabir just likes having them. you didn’t know this about him at first though, so it worried you in the beginning when he’d come to your country and waste money in various tourist traps. one day you pulled him aside, telling him bluntly that he was throwing money away on useless items. kabir simply laughed, shaking his head. “i know,” he replied, chuckling a bit, “it’s fun though. and i like the cute toys.” ever since then you’ve just let him do as he pleases. occasionally you’ll scoff or roll your eyes as he insists on going into a trap shop. at this, he simply teases that he’s just “supporting your economy” and that you should be happy he’s spending so much money. 

— even as friends, he dotes on you a lot. it’s not very parental, more like a sarcastic older brother type of caring. is your economy okay? need help with resources? kabir will complain about how you’re less mature than he is while working hard to help you fix whatever issues you’re facing. he also makes sure to check on you, the person. you’re more than your country and sometimes you need a reminder of that fact. if you’re ever trying to get out of a work meeting, just give him a call. he’s got the perfect excuses ready for you to use. its just his way of showing his care and appreciation. 

— kabir really enjoys sharing food with you, like seriously. oftentimes for lunch after meetings you’ll bring a bag full of your favorite foods and he’ll do the same. the two of you will switch bags and try out new things. of course, there’s always lunches where someone doesn’t like something. everyone has different tastes. it’s not the end of the world though. eating and talking together has allowed the two of you to get even closer, so the tradition doesn’t end even once you’re in a relationship with kabir. he’ll even get jealous if you offer food to other countries, especially countries like china or england. 

— he has one of the best beach bodies known to man. okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but he is extremely attractive. it’s hard not to feel giddy as he comes out of the changing rooms shirtless with some swim trunks and flip flops. being a long-standing country, kabir has been around for a while and it shows in certain ways. still, he’s hot. he doesn’t hesitate in teasing you for looking at his body. it’s okay, because you can tease him for the same thing! he’s not the type to stare  but trust and believe he’s enjoying the sight of your body the same way you’re enjoying his. 

— he pays attention to the little things, especially when you start talking about your country and your history. you’ll be strolling with kabir, musing about how the coastal city you’re walking in used to be a major trading port maybe two or three centuries ago, and he’s just listening. he may not speak much but he nods his head in acknowledgement. in his eyes, understanding a person's history is vital to understanding the person themselves. that’s not the only thing he pays attention to though. he notices other things like body language too. he notices when another country has said something insensitive to you and he won’t hesitate to step in and stand up for you. kabir also notices when you’re eyeing something in a window of a shop— you can consider it yours, by the way.

— he loves holding your hands and hugging on you. kabir loves to pamper you in public but behind closed doors he’s a complete drama king. he’s not above whining or pouting when he’s mildly upset. if you’re cooking then he’s there, wrapping his arms around your waist and kissing your neck while muttering sweet nothings. if you’re reading then he’s in your lap, quietly asking if you’ll read aloud so he can listen. he’s considerably clingy but he’s also considerably charming and cute so he gets a pass.  

> brett kirkland!

— for your first visit to his country he takes you out on a huge aquarium date. the aquarium you go to is of course the sea life sydney aquarium. brett talks a lot during the date, passionately informing you about the marine animals there. when you reach the shark exhibit he decides to take hold of your hand, even if you’re not scared. he sizes up the sharks before turning to you and joking about how he could take them in a fight. or at least, you think he’s joking. you hope kirkland’s joking.. he’s happy to have you in australia, but he’s really happy to be showing you the sea life. it’s something that he figured the both of you could enjoy. your country’s surrounded by water.. his country’s surrounded by water.. it just makes sense. at the end of the date he’ll buy you both souvenirs from the gift shop. for the next date, brett’s thinking whale watching would be fun. 

— when he’s visiting your country, he loves to match outfits with you. he’s used to hotter temperatures so his closet matches your weather for the most part. cheesy matching couple shirts are definitely a thing with him, though if you say no he won’t continue to push it. even if you two have completely different fashion styles, kirkland’ll try to make his outfit coordinate somewhat with yours. it’s just something he finds to be cute.

— brett is the type of boyfriend to call you at one am talking at the speed of light about some sort of incident he’s gotten himself into. he loves calling you when the two of you are apart. hopefully you’re fine with hearing him ramble on the phone about nothing and everything at the same time. he’s also the type of boyfriend to sneak out of work with you, slyly leaving a meeting in london so the two of you can explore around and enjoy each other's company. kirkland takes full responsibility whenever you’re caught in the act, though his mischievous glances at you are a clear sign that you’ll be sneaking out again like rowdy teenagers sometime soon. he’s the type of boyfriend to think of you as the best thing to ever happen to him. he’ll kiss your hand and pretend to be a gentleman, smiling as you laugh at his behavior. 

— he claims that you’re his good luck charm but brett’s just a lucky man in general. occasionally his luck will rub off on you and you’ll call him to talk about it. he likes to say that his love for you is just so strong that even when you’re apart he’s there making things better for you. it’s cheesy but when you walk along your capital city one day and find a large amount of money just barely hiding in the crack of a sidewalk, you really do start to believe it. it’s not logical in the slightest but hey, it’s sweet.

— he is naturally touchy. kirkland has one hand on you at almost all times. especially when it’s the two of you out on a date. what can he say? you’re a catch! he’s sure that if he didn’t hold onto you, someone else would try to steal you away from him. though he’s not easily jealous, he doesn’t enjoy the thought of someone trying to flirt with you. typically he just holds you by the waist. if you’re ever uncomfortable just talk to him about it— brett never wants you to suffer in silence, so trust me when i say he appreciates it when you speak up. he believes firmly in talking about your issues and working through them together. the two of you can find a nice compromise that works for both of you.

— kirkland loves playing on the beach with you! please, please take him out to one of your beaches so he can play volleyball or go surfing or build sandcastles. he’s a pretty outgoing person too, so it’s easy for him to find friends at the beach. if you want to just sit out in the sand and relax, that’s fine with him! he’s not one to sit still for too long but he’ll try to come check on you in between playing on the beach.

— he loves going to the beach with you and walking along the beautiful sandy shores that your country is filled with. jones absolutely adores the feeling of the sea breeze hitting his face and running through his hair as he plays beach volleyball or builds sandcastles. the waves are perfect for surfing, an activity he’ll undoubtedly try and partake in. alfred’s no stranger to beaches of course. he has plenty of his own back home. however your beaches are so pretty with such clear water and gorgeous sand almost 100% clear of trash. he’s almost jealous about how well taken care of your beaches are. your citizens seem to care about keeping beaches healthy just as much as you do.

— he gets a ton of tiktoks about food from your country, specifically the fruits. every so often he’ll try to play expert and will grab fruit and eat it raw right off the plant. jones isn’t dumb enough to eat something poisonous, but it’s still a little embarrassing. especially considering no natives of your country actually eat fruit right off the plant. he enjoys eating all sorts of cooked meals that are favorites in your country. he’s not afraid to try new things so if you recommend him something a food, he’ll definitely check it out.

— alfred falls for nearly every single tourist trap he happens to see. though he’s your friend, he’s still technically a tourist to your country. it’s something you failed to notice at first until one day while visiting he left you and came back with an armful of little souvenirs. they were useless and you told him that but he didn’t seem phased. jones told you that he’d treasure them until the day he died. basically, he’d treasure them forever. it was cute so you let it slide that day, but from then on you made a note to keep him away from tourist traps. he’d probably go broke if you didn’t keep an eye on him. the souvenirs alfred did manage to sneak off and buy were used to decorate the personal homes he had around america. they were accompanied by keepsakes from japan, denmark, and a few other places.

— inviting you over to america is a whole different can of worms. really, jones is not sure which state he should show you first— maybe hawaii or cali because they’re somewhat similar to your country.. maybe new york or maybe even florida.. actually no, not florida. never florida. maybe arizona or new mexico (you’ve seen breaking bad, right?) or alaska so that you experience the snow. the decision process isn’t made easier when you comment on going to new york and arizona in the same day. alfred has to explain to you that his country is huge and going to all the states you wanted to see in the same day was simply impossible. there’s a lot of american things he wants to show you as a sort of thank you for showing him your country.

— the two of you make a pretty cute couple as boyfriend and girlfriend. it’s a little jarring at first, since he’s very american and occasionally ignorant on issues concerning your country but jones isn’t above learning to be better. as long as you call him out on his bullshit then he’ll change because really, he does love you. fully and wholly, he loves you. he shows his love when he visits your country and instead of playing on the beach he helps you pick up trash. alfred shows his love when you come to america and he waits at the gate, running and hugging you as soon as he sees you. he shows his love when he takes you to basketball and baseball games and kisses you even when you don’t appear on the kiss cam. 

— jones is obsessed with the drinks from your country. he finds that both the alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks are delicious. they seem to come in an endless combination of interesting flavors. they always leave him wanting more. when he sees you during breaks in between meetings, he’ll occasionally beg for a sip of what you’re drinking. he’ll ask to ‘waterfall’ from your cup, giving you a strong dose of puppy dog eyes so that you give in. if you manage to stay strong, it’s not the end of the world— alfred will just ask you to bring a drink for him next time. if you give in though, he’ll happily give you a bone crushing hug before tasting some of your drink. ah, so refreshing!

— williams really enjoys learning about your local wildlife, especially if you have a species that’s native solely to your country. he’s very invested in wildlife conservation and protection in general, so hearing about the plants and animals that are protected here in your country is pretty cool! he wouldn’t mind visiting a few centers or zoos in general and seeing the animals up close. if you do end up taking him there, be prepared for a lot of picture taking. matthew actually prints out some of the pictures he takes of the two of you together, framing them in his bedroom. it’s nothing big, just a small framed picture or two on his nightstand. in general, he’d bond a lot with you over wildlife conservation.

— you two dress like complete opposites due to the differences in weather. it’s a little jarring when either one of you visits the other’s country because both of you always underestimate the difference in weather. at this point, it would be more productive for you to have two closets— one for home and one for canada. williams doesn’t complain much about the weather even when he’s not properly dressed for it. he just sits and suffers silently until you notice and make him change into something more fitting. 

— he sometimes worries you’d like his brother more than him. i mean.. alfred is the more outgoing one out of the two.. it just feels like you guys are total opposites. you’re a tropical country meanwhile his country is pretty cold.. every so often matthew thinks of the two of you as too different for each other, not really realizing that you two have a decent amount of stuff in common. even if you were complete opposites, opposites attract! you love him just the way he is. you’ll have to remind him of that every so often. give him a good talk and a few kisses to the cheek or a nice hug. he’ll feel just fine after that.

— williams would absolutely love to take you out to go ice skate on a frozen pond or play in the snow. he wants to be the one to introduce you to these things. even if you’ve already been in the snow before.. maybe he could reintroduce this sort of stuff to you. he finds the whole idea of a snow day with you to be romantic.

— stereotypical but please go to a hockey game with him. please please go to a hockey game with him. the first hockey game you go to with matthew is a special event. he makes sure to get you both the best tickets he can. of course, you’re both decked out in merch for the team he roots for (don’t worry about not owning any, he has plenty to share). he even goes as far as to ask for good luck kisses before the match. every time his team scores he cheers his head off before hugging you and thanking you for your luck. even if his team loses, williams is just happy to have gone out with you— though next time he will be asking for two good luck kisses instead of just one. actually, how about a kiss for every member of the team? he’s sure they’ll win then. 

— he definitely enjoys your sunny weather though he’s a bit shy about his body. he doesn’t suffer too badly with his self image, but matthew gets self conscious every now and then. usually this doesn’t hold him back though. once he sees you waiting for him he puts his fears aside. as long as you love him and his body then who cares what someone else thinks? plus it would be improper to keep a lover waiting. especially when you look so good in your swim outfit.. of course he’s joining you in having fun on the beach.

it's been interesting reading your reaction to poor things, and i wanted to ask-- do you feel that way about this film specifically, or do you feel that way about lanthimos in general? because i have a hit and miss relationship with most of his work; liked the killing of a sacred deer and the favorite, but not much else. would like to hear your thoughts

the thing about poor things for me is that aside from the trailer being one of the worst things i have ever seen in my life, i don’t feel any kind of way about it. i’m not offended by it or anything. it’s clearly not for me, and that’s fine lol. but i keep feeling a certain kind of way about it because it’s very telling to me that this film specifically is getting a lot of accolades and being praised to hell for being so like. transgressive and brave! and out there! by people who would be going to discourse fucking city if a woman had written and directed this. and considering how people are already pick-meing about this when thats pointed out is kinda proving my point. uwu “im the BIGGEST fan of women filmmakers but men can make great films about women too” literally shut the fuck up lol

What were your thoughts on poor things? and do you have any thoughts on the best picture nominees?

controversially, i really quite enjoyed it - or, certainly, it's the film i've seen recently which has stayed with me longest after leaving the cinema, which i concede might be a slightly different thing.

this isn't something i was expecting - i'm not a massive lanthimos fan [largely because, even though i'm aware that i should keep my mouth shut about this as someone who has been found defending wes anderson's style, i think lots of his signature techniques are a bit overdone]. i liked dogtooth, but i thought the lobster/the favourite/killing of a sacred deer were just ok - and so i didn't have high hopes for poor things, even before taking into account that i saw it while very well aware of the criticism it has received for being misogynistic etc.

i don't think i entirely agree with that characterisation of the film - it seemed more to me that it was trying to cram too many themes into too little time [its commentary on medical ethics, for example, felt really half-done], in a way which gave none of them proper space to breathe.

but i do like a bit of absurdist technicolour to counteract all the hyper-realistic films you can't see properly. and the cast are just so good. i've entertained myself endlessly by doing mark ruffalo impressions whenever i can, and phrases such as WHAT OF THE TONGUE PLAY have entered my vocabulary permanently, i fear.

the main 2023-24 film opinion i have to get off my chest though...

how does succession rate on the utena scale 👁👁

I mean incest as a motif is a lot subtler in succession than it is in utena or dogtooth, only alluded to rather than explicitly depicted (the shiv logan scene in ep3 notwithstanding). (i think incest not being explicitly depicted works in succession where it wouldn’t in utena because the unsaid and the unseen are crucial to how reality is fabricated, whereas in utena fabricated reality is ultimately seen through.) that said, succession illustrates familial abuse as microcosmic, replicated on a larger scale in wider patriarchal society, and how misogyny and fascist ideals are necessary to maintaining that system. however, unlike utena, pretty much all of its theses are established in the pilot and continue as a thematic throughline throughout the four seasons, which makes for a wildly different show in terms of structure (as well as basically everything else). succession lays its cards on the table, is always grounded in reality (despite the somewhat heightened dialogue), and is not interested in challenging preexisting narrative frameworks but rather using them to communicate its themes. that said, it executes those themes well. I’d give it 4/5 utenas.

a/n :

lumped all these chapters together because the majority of my digital notes will pick up at 18 and all my on paper notes go in a different direction so this little bts section will be mostly alternate plot lines!!

general writing experience with this section :

so there will be a much more in-depth look be a at this in the notes section but originally everything after chapter nine was different. I never actually planned on there being a breakup arc, there was just going to be a different arc based on the rules that would lead into the final arc (which i will not be discussing lol) but basically what happened was i realized that there would be like a billion filler chapters with that outline and also no conflict for over 10 episodes. another big part of the original outline was that Din would have wanted exclusivity and a public relationship which i quickly realized just wasn't really in character for the version of din that i was building so i decided it needed to be changed which led to the breakup arc.

inspirations :

this is a lot of the stuff i've previously mentioned, most of readers solitude is based on charlotte from queen charlotte, i do also base a lot of her character from here on out on catherine from the great. when he starts getting more and more reluctant i base him more on edward cullen than ever before lol

notes :

i knew that there were going to specifically be two big reveal moments, one in the gardens and one at the ball. in the end i postponed both and saved them for the same chapter and ended up just having her invite him in. had them have their anthony and kate moment in chapter four and didn't have it become a sex scene until a chapter six.

i will dive more into the garden scene when i do my notes on chapter sixteen but the original dialogue from sixteen was moved to be in six.

it's not featured in the notes but at one point i had considered having their first time be in the gardens like up against a tree lmao, but it was right around these chapters where i wanted dins character to be a specific way and that version of din wouldn't want their first time to be against a tree lol.

and as for the dialogue during their first time as you can see that pretty much stayed the same except for the beginning bit which i decided was too derivative of queen charlotte.

in another version of the fic there wasn't even a sex scene in six. in the original version when she asked him to come in he was going to say no, or come in and not have sex with her. (when it came down to it i realized that din viewed himself as weak and not just someone who was in love, and wouldn't be able to resist the offer) so instead the ball was going to be in chapter seven and that night was going to be when the first hooked up (the ball ended up being moved once i decided to write the break up) there was going to be a modiste chapter where they recreated her dream from chapter three, instead i put that scene into six in a different context and seven was going to be the first time chapter and also the rules chapter.

eventually i just tabled the entire ball idea and went with my gut, deeming six the first time chapter and seven the rules chapter.

censored spoilers lol but i knew i wanted a scene where he ate her out in the library under her dress lmao even though that doesn't happen for a bit but here's a really shitty drawing of the necklace he got he as i imagine it

here are the solar market notes!! a few things ended up being different specifically because i hadn't realized that i was going to have solar & lunar markets when i first wrote these notes but it eventually took shape and the dialogue stayed mostly the same.

this is the library sex scene chapter (definitely one of my favorite sex scenes to write. just really fun lmao.)

this is where my. notes are just a completely different timeline. basically in my original notes the ten chapters following the breaking of the rules were pretty much going to be them going through individually and breaking each one. (not the consent one lmao except maybe in like a non sexual sense i was going to have them fight but that never happened so its irrelevant. the other option was going to be like a sexy role play thing as listed where they played hide and seek (which they might still do whoops) this entire section was scrapped which is why there aren't really notes on it but most of this stuff listed ended up happening. also elaine was like super irrelevant in this version lmao i really liked this idea but honestly it just wasnt sustainable and without conflict wouldn't have been interesting

the tenth rule break was going to be the love confession which would send us into the final arch but this became irrelevant bc i went in another direction but look at how pretty my arc three page was LMAO also there's the messy timeline i made when i was changing the order of things

here's just a shit ton of notes that did happen although these are scrambled and a few details were changed in the final cut!!

this is like... super fucking extravagant but i love this dress as a sort of base for what fifteens might have looked like. flowy, pretty sort of thing

Movies I watched this week (#169):

3 by forgotten [re-discovered?] Turkish director, Metin Erksan:

🍿  Dry Summer, a mesmerizing 1964 Turkish masterpiece I never heard of before. It tells of a greedy peasant who refuses to share the water on his field with his neighbors, as well as his scheme to steal his younger brother's new bride. (Photo Above). A rustic tragedy featuring one of the most insidious screen villains ever. Highly recommended. 9/10.

It was championed and restored by Martin Scorsese's 'World Cinema Project'. (I'm going to start chewing through their list of preserved classics from around the world.)

🍿 Time to love (1965) is a fetishistic, probably-symbolic, melodrama about a poor house painter who falls in love with a wall portrait of a woman, but who can't or won't love the real person. Lots of brooding while heavy rains keep pouring down, and traditional oud music drones on. Strikingly beautiful black and white cinematography elevates this strange soap opera into something that Antonioni could have shot.

🍿 "May Allah's mercy be upon her! May Allah's mercy be upon her! May Allah's mercy be upon her!"

In 1974 Erksan directed the cheesy Seytan ("Satan"), a plagiarized, unauthorized Turkish rip-off of 'The Exorcist'. It was a schlocky, nearly a shot-by-shot copy, and included the blood spurting, head spinning, cursing, stairs, a young actress that looked strikingly like Linda Blair, and even extensive use of Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells'. But it eliminated the Catholic element and had none of the superb decisions of the William Friedkin's version. 1/10.

Agnès Varda's deceivingly blissful drama, Le Bonheur. Exquisite, subversive and beautifully simple, about an uncomplicated man who's completely happy with his idyllic life, his loving wife and two little children. But one summer day he takes on an attractive mistress, while still feeling uncommonly fulfilled and undisturbed. Varda lets the Mozart woodwind score do all the heavy interpretive lifting of this disturbing feminist take of the bourgeoisie. Just WOW! 8/10.

At this point, I should just complete my explorations of Varda's oeuvre, and see the rest of her movies. Also, I'm going to take a deep dive one day into the many terrific movies from 1965 (besides the many I've already seen, 'Red Beard', 'Simon of the desert', 'Repulsion', 'The spy who came in from the cold', 'Juliet of the spirit', 'Pierrot the fool'...).

2 by amazing Bulgarian director Milko Lazarov:

🍿 Ága, my first Bulgarian film, but it plays somewhere in Yakutsk, south of the Russian arctic circle. An isolated old Inuit couple lives alone in a yurt on the tundra. Slow and spiritual, their lives unfold in the most unobtrusive way, it feels like a documentary. But the simplicity is deceiving, this is film-making of the highest grade, and once Mahler 5th was introduced on a small transistor radio, it's transcendental. The emptiness touched me deeply.

Together with 93 other movies, this was submitted by Bulgaria to the 2019 Oscars (the one won by 'Parasite'). How little we know; If selected, we might have all be talking about it. Absolutely phenomenal! The trailer represents the movie well. 10/10

(It also reminded me very much of the Bolivian drama 'Utama' from 2022, another moving story of an elderly Indian couple living alone in the desert, tending to their small flock of llamas.)

🍿 Milko Lazarov made only one earlier film, the minimalist Alienation in 2013. It tells of Yorgos, a middle age Greek man, (impassively played by the father from 'Dogtooth'), who crosses the border to Bulgaria to buy a newborn baby. But it's not as bad as it sounds, because he's actually helping the impoverished surrogate mother (who looks like young Tilda Swinton) who can't effort to keep him. Another stark and snail-like drama about quiet people who barely speak, told with the masterful language of a true poet. Like 'Ága', it too opens with a stunning close up of a lengthy incantation in an unfamiliar language. I wish he made more movies. 8/10.

2 more arctic dramas:

🍿 The original movie about indigenous Inuks, Nanook of the North, from 1922, was the first feature-length documentary to achieve commercial success. An engaging slice of life of an Inuit family, even if some of the scenes were staged. 💯 score on Rotten Tomatoes.

🍿 "Many of the scientists involved with climate change agree: The end of human life on this planet is assured."

Another fascinating Werner Herzog documentary, Encounters at the end of the world. About the "professional dreamers" who live and work at McMurdo Station in Antarctica; divers who venture to explore life under the the ice, volcanologists who burrow into ice caves, etc. Herzog's 'secret sauce' is finding the most outrageous, interesting spots on earth, and then just going there and letting his camera do his bidding.

2 fantastic shorts by Hungarian animator Réka Bucsi:

🍿 Her 2014 Symphony No. 42 consists of 47 short & whimsical vignettes, without any rhyme or rhythm; A farmer fills a cow with milk until it overflows, a zoo elephant draws a "Help me" sign, a UFO sucks all the fish from the ocean, wolves party hard to 'La Bamba', an angry man throws a pie at a penguin, two cowboys holding blue balloons watch a tumbleweed rolls by, a big naked woman cuddle with a seal, etc. Earlier than Don Hertzfeldt's 'World of tomorrow' and my favorite Rúnar Rúnarsson's 'Echo', it's a perfect piece of surrealist chaos. 10/10

🍿 Her name was Françoise ("Elle s’appelait Françoise") is a fluff bio-piece about the utterly gorgeous model-actress, who died at a fiery car-crush at 25, and who left a legacy of only a few important films. It includes previously-unseen, enchanting clips and photos from her short life. But then is cuts into her and sister Catherine Deneuve practicing their "Pair of Twins" song-and-dance from 'The Young Girls of Rochefort', the most charming musical in the world, and life is sunny again.

🍿 That man from Rio, her breakthrough film, was a stupid James Bond spoof, inspired by 'The adventures of Tintin'. Unfortunately, it focused on protagonist Jean-Paul Belmondo, and used Dorléac only as eye-candy. It's the first film I've seen from Brasília, just a few years after it was constructed. 2/10.

Paintings and Film X 3:

🍿 'Painting Nerds' is a YouTube channel by 2 Scottish artists, putting up intelligent video essays about the art of painting. Paintings In Movies: From '2001: A Space Odyssey' to 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' is an insightful meditation which explores the relationship between the two art forms. Among the many examples it touches on are the canvases in Hitchcock's 'Rebecca' and 'Vertigo', 'The French Dispatch', 'Laura' and 'I'm thinking of ending things'. They even made a Wellesian trailer for that essay, When Citizen Kane met Bambi : The Lost Paintings of Tyrus Wong!

🍿 So I decided to see some of the movies mentioned above, f. ex. Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry from 1955. Famous for being Shirley MacLaine's film debut, his first collaboration with Bernard Herrmann, and this being his only "real" comedy. However, the only engaging element among the idiotic machinations on screen were the stunning VistaVision landscapes, painted in true Vermont autumn colors.

🍿 All the Vermeers in New York is my [5th film about Vermeer, and] my first film by prolific indie director Jon Jost. The Scottish essay above interpretated it as a "Charming mirroring of art and life, but also a deeply sad film... The gallery scene shows the transmission of feeling from painting to person, and ultimately, the vast amount of space between them. It plays out the entire drama of the film in microcosm.." But that Met Gallery scene was the only outstanding one in an otherwise disjointed experiment about the NYC art world. The abrasive stockbroker who falls for a French actress at the museum and mistakes her for a woman from the painting was mediocre and irritating. 3/10.

First watch: Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, an homage to Melville's Le Samouraï. An RZA mood piece about a ritualistically-chill black assassin / Zen Sensei, who communicates only with carrier pigeons, and who drives alone at night in desolate streets on mafia missions. 'Live by the Code, die by the Code'.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Scorsese's only melodrama with a female protagonist (? - haven't seen 'Boxcar Bertha' yet). It opens in a tinted Wizard of Oz scenery, and tells of an ordinary single mom who dreams of becoming a singer. Hardly a feminist story, as she navigates between one unloving husband, an abusive lover and eventually bearded Kris Kristofferson, who ends up beating her son and promises not to do it again. 3/10.

[I finally watched it because of this clip of 15-year-old Jody Foster singing Je t'attends depuis la nuit de temps on French television].

The new well-made HBO documentary The Truth vs Alex Jones. About the collective mental sickness that is Amerika. It's hard to imagine how insane are the crazies over there. 💯 score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ramy Youssef X 3:

🍿 I discovered first-generation Egyptian-American stand-up comedian Ramy Youssef. In his funny 2019 special, Feelings, he comes across as a sweet dude, a sensitive, observant Muslim, on a complicated spiritual quest in New Jersey. Recommended!

🍿 Ramy was his A24 TV-series that expanded on the themes. It had more of a sitcom vibes, reminiscent of 'Master of None', another one that dealt with an unexplored ethnicity, previously marginalized. I only watched the first season, and liked how unapologetic he was in having large part of the dialogue in other languages, Arabic, French, Etc. Episode 7, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", starring his screen-mom Hiam Abbass was a terrific stand-out.

🍿 “Where were you when the floods happened in Pakistan?”

More feelings, his brand new stand up which just dropped is dark and gentle. It opens with some dark truths from his friend Steve who wants to die, and moves right into the situation in Palestine.

Some people say Erythronium grandiflorum. Some folks call it glacier lily. Others say yellow avalanche lily. And a few people prefer dogtooth fawn lily. That’s a lot of names for a plant that only grows about a foot high.

But this is a pretty special flower. It’s typically one of the first flowers we see bloom in the sub-alpine meadows. This yellow flower is a sure sign of summer on its way.

The glacier lily is a bulb plant. During the summer, it is gathering lots of sunshine to make its seeds and to make food which it then stores underground in its bulb. It dies back, leaving nothing above ground for winter snows to hurt. Then the bulb waits under ground all winter, where it’s protected from the brutal winter weather. Come spring, the snow starts melting. Sunlight slowly reaches down through the snowpack and starts to touch the ground. Eventually, sometimes through the last inch or so of snow, the bulb sprouts and the yellow bloom graces the subalpine meadows again.

You've seen The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer, but Yorgos Lanthimos' film Dogtooth is probably one of his most "was that messed up or what? Anyway." films that I've seen so far.

The movie itself says a lot about information control and its role authoritarianism, delving into the subject of the mutilation of spoken language as a method of control and the authoritarian attempts to shape reality through the language of fear and power.

The plot of the movie also reminds me of a spectacular little documentary from 2016 called "Chuck Norris Vs Communism." I can see clear parallels from the Eldest daughter's discovery of a world outside the fear and patriarchy through Schlocky 80s films on VHS to how the Romanian people's black market trade in censor-free pirated VHS tapes from the west gave them a glimpse of a world less repressive than the communism they lived under (see also: Soviet Russia's blue jeans craze).

Dogtooth is a hard film to watch, and there are so many quietly delivered atrocities juxtaposed against a placid greek landscape that just continue to raise the level of messed up for the film beyond what I expected.

That placid greek landscape is extremely important to this film. Its utopian appearance is the whole point. The house they're kept in could warrant a feature in architectural digest with a few minor tweaks to the interior design. Throwing a washed out apocalypse filter over brutalist apartment buildings is easy, but that's not what Dogtooth is saying about oppressive utopias, and I respect that.

Worldbuilding Tidbits: RiverClan Territory

General description: RiverClan territory is a mix between a grassland and a marsh, with many streams intersecting the territory. Their territory to the very west is a twoleg campsite, but thankfully it’s rare for them to venture far into their land. The grasses range from short to long, and trees, while fairly sparse compared to ThunderClan, are still show up. Trees include willows, magnolia, birches, cottonwoods, maples, cypresses, and hornbeams, with the occasional pine or fir trees growing toward the northeast near fourtrees. Common undergrowth includes yarrow, reeds, rushes, bulrushes, cornflowers, dandelions, spotflowers, baneberry bushes, buckeye bushes, winterberry bushes, dogtooth violets, snakeroot, foxgloves, garlic, leeks, honeysuckles, brambles, cattails, water lilies, sedges, ragweed bushes, asters, chaffweeds, lilacs, thimbleweeds, ferns, goldenrod, goldenseal, marigolds, and wormwoods.

Common prey: Trouts, salmon, perches, carps, bass, bluegills, wipers, catfish, breams, pikes, dances, chubs, walleyes, minnows, salmon, water voles, water shrews, wood ducks, ducks, grebe, rails, coots, moorhens, cranes, curlews, loons, and field mice

Rare prey: Swans, rabbits, geese, squirrels, storks

Common threats: Swans, geese, otters, flash floods, things being dumped into water and poisoning the fish, dogs from the campsite, occasional twolegs encroaching on their territory

TERRITORY:

The camp is a wide island surrounded by a gentle stream. The island is in the middle of the territory and is tucked into a grove surrounded by willow and elm trees. The dens are made out of woven reeds and willow branches secured to the ground with deeply-embedded sticks, but they’re designed to float if there’s a flash flood and stick together. The addressing place is a tall rock in the middle of the camp surrounded by water called the Riverstone, and the leader’s den is a large, uprooted bush woven with vines and branches and covered in moss and oak leaves next to a willow that is a few tail-lengths from the Riverstone. The deputy’s den is close to the leader’s den and is a woven mass of branches, reeds, and brambles secured by two branches in the ground. The druid’s den is a thick, hollowed out elm trunk with a roof woven from reeds and branches, and enough room to fit two druids and five patients. The nursery is a woven tangle of reeds and vines with moss plugging the holes situated near the entrance in case of emergencies with room for seven cats. The elder’s den is an old, hollowed log with enough room to fit seven cats. The lorekeepers, warriors, and caretaker dens are thick bushes with reeds and brambles woven in. The warriors den can fit up to 24 cats each, while the lore-keepers and caretaker’s dens can hold up to 12

Tribute Hill- A small hill situated just a little bit from the RiverClan camp, with the top being mostly flat. Lots of lavender, dandelions, and cornflowers grow here, and the top of the hill is the Tribute Stones and the Old Prayer Willow

Tribute Stones- A collection of stones placed on top of the Tribute Hill. Cats come here to pay tribute to passed loved ones, usually through flowers, well wishes, and pretty stones, and some cats even say prayers for the dead

Old Prayer Willow- The Old Prayer Willow is in the center of the Tribute Stones. It’s an old, tall willow whose branches shield the hilltop from bad weather and heat. Oftentimes, cats who are having difficulties in life or need advice from their ancestors go to the willow, as it’s said to be a hotspot for StarClan’s signs

River- The lifeblood of RiverClan, flowing through all parts of the territory in small streams and ponds. The main river wraps all around the territory, acting as a natural border between WindClan and ThunderClan. The river, at its most narrow part, is about 30 feet across, and is full of fish. Certain parts of the river are much more shallow, while some parts are known to flood during spring thaws. The river also gets low during particularly hot summers, which causes RiverClan to hunt on other parts of their land and/or fight for sunningrocks

Swirling Depths- This part of the river has a unique trait of the water swirling and swirling around, but this water is rarely fast enough to sweep away anyone, although it is a bit tricky to navigate. This area is used to help apprentices practice swimming and diving skills, and is an ideal spot to teach water combat

Marshy Shallows- Near the Twoleg Bridge is a marshy area, full of reeds, peat, moss, tall grass, and dogwood bushes. Hidden in the plant life are frogs and salamanders, and fish like to hang out here in the late spring and early summer

Twoleg Bridge- An old but sturdy bridge built by twolegs long ago. The bridge used to be frequented by twolegs as there was a hiking trail from the campsite to Fourtrees, but it has fallen in disuse as the twolegs rarely walk the path anymore. Now it’s only used by RiverClan to get to the gatherings

Twoleg Trail- Connected to the twoleg bridge is an old hiking trail that connects all the way back to the Summer Twolegplace, although it’s mostly grown over and never used nowadays. Seeds tend to scatter in this area during the spring and early summer that attract many types of birds and field mice, making this a valued hunting spot

Rushing Rapids- A little bit away from the twoleg bridge and nearing the gorge is the rushing rapids. The water is powerful and can easily sweep even the best swimmers down into the murky depths, but it is a great fishing spot, especially in the summer when the salmon come. Unfortunately, young apprentices sometimes challenge each other to swim in these waters, and every once in a while a cat dies from such a dare

Gorge- Carving out a natural border between RiverClan and WindClan, the gorge is a steep cut in the ground that contains the river, although the waters are much more wild. The gorge extends to the very outskirts of RiverClan territory and, if any cat feels adventurous enough, they can find the river that feeds into the gorge

Training Stones- A bit aways from the gorge is the training stones, a collection of large stones and soft, loamy earth. It’s a favorite spot for mentors to train apprentices in combat, and the ground is soft enough to cushion harsh falls

Grassy Hills- Gently sloped hills dotted with flowers and the occasional birch or elm. These hills are a great spot for land prey

Dragonfly Pond- In the grassy hills lie a large pond, fed by an underground spring. It has lots of lilypads, reeds, and spotflowers, and the pond is circled by sedge bushes. Dragonflies often flock to this pond, but the pond also contains minnows and shad

Wet Expanses- The grassy hills eventually blend into a marshy expanse of land, called the wet expanses. Many small streams, ponds, and puddles form in to soft, moist earth, and this place is a good spot for frogs, minks, muskrats, trout, and shad. Turtles live here as well, but they are considered sacred and are rarely touched. Catching a frog here in the early spring is considered good luck, and older cats say apprentices that catch them will have a successful moon

Cottonwood Grove- On higher land next to the wet expanses is a forest called cottonwood grove, named for the aforementioned trees that mostly grow here. Unlike ThunderClan’s forest however, these trees are spaced out and have sparse foliage. The forest also contains a few birch, cypress, and willows. Squirrels, mice, and voles roam the forest, but it’s considered bad luck to hunt here during times of easy prey. However, if a flood happens the clan shelters here

Fern Glade- In the middle of the cottonwood grove is a serene glade filled with ferns and wildflowers, surrounded by brambles and baneberry bushes. Here, lorekeeper apprentices learn stories of old and memorize the code, and history lessons are often held in this spot

The Blessed Fields- Right outside the cottonwood grove is a meadow with fertile soil, where herbs are abundant.

The River Cherry- At the end of the blessed field lies a lone, old cherry tree, sitting on a ridge overlooking the river. It’s said that Riverstar died on that hill, wishing to see his beloved river one last time before he died, and when he breathed his last, a cherry tree grew from his body. This tree blooms in the spring and early summer and is very beautiful. There’s a tradition that courtfriends take a part of this tree, be it a twig, a petal, or even one of the cherries to propose

Clear Pond- Next to the cherry tree is the clear pond, a pond full of small tadpoles and minnows. It’s forbidden to fish from this pond, as it’s said that Riverstar himself blessed that pond. When the moon is almost full, the druids travel to this bond to find omens of the clan’s fortune for the next moon

Clear Stream- Running from the clear pond is the clear stream, a small but fast current that runs all the way into a long-abandoned fox burrow.

Flowing Cavern- The flowing cavern is a fox burrow, long since abandoned and having not been occupied in ages. The stream pools in a small crevice on the floor before draining underground. If a cat is struggling with difficulties in their life, they are encouraged to stay a night in the den, as it’s said that the den allows StarClan cats to visit their loved ones and comfort them. Most cats say they wake up with a sense of deep peace and contentedness, sometimes with the smell of a dead loved one in their noses. Druids like to add herbs like lavender and rosemary to give it a soothing smell.

Pastures- A wide, honestly picturesque expanse of grassy meadows where horses are let out to graze and be rode. It's also a common place to have picnics or walk dogs, and kids play here a lot. Generally RiverClan avoids this area due to the high amounts of twoleg activity, plus the dogs pose a danger if they spot a patrol and manage to get loose, and the occasional twoleg kit will spot a cat and take them.

Summer Twolegcamp- At the further edge of the territory lies the Summer Twolegcamp, or called the twolegcamp for short. During the spring, summer, and early autumn, twolegs come in and out of the area and live in tents. The twolegs like to stay up late and play in the surrounding fields, but they thankfully never go too far unless a dog got loose.
