So I was reading Sigma's backstory in chapter 75, and I realised why Sigma severely doubts his intelligence and capabilities and says he doesn't have any 'talent' - despite taking very intelligent measures to try to defeat the Hunting Dogs even when under huge emotional stress.

It's because of his ability, and the way it was used in his accepted backstory.

Fyodor wrote him to be 'born' knowing nothing very useful for survival (the Book demands a logical plot), therefore he coudn't afford to refuse to join the traffickers, knowing nothing about his world.

The traffickers probably intentionally kept him somewhat in the dark about human nature, hoping he'd develop a sort of Stockholm Syndrome in order to cope with his circumstances. I say this because after he escaped, he was naive and trusting or simply exhausted enough to repeatedly reveal his ability to others, and use it on them believing them to be kind, not realising what sorts of selfish murderous people exist in the world who were perfectly willing to kill him for knowing too much after getting 'the tea' from him.

Imagine that in a world full of mostly self - centered (for good reason or not) people, you know nothing about functioning outside your tiny previous job. You give others the info they most want in exchange for the info you want (how to function in an unknown world), but since you are very naive and underinformed, the info you most want is not very useful for climbing up the food chain.

So you run from one murderous jerk to another, over and over.

Anyone in this situation would start believing that they're dangerously dumb conpared to everyone else That they'll lose everything they hold onto, lose their means of survival and reason to live, unless they have loads of the latest top - notch information about EVERYTHING, unless they go to extents that no 'normal' person has to. Which, of course, is an endless and vast process.

Let's talk about etiquette.

1. Don't steal part or all of someone's fic.

This isn't like turning in a shitty assignment in 10th grade to your completely burnt out teacher who doesn't give a fuck if you plagiarized.

These writers care if you plagiarize. It isn't flattering. It isn't delightful. It's disrespectful and upsetting. Changing a couple words here and there doesn't make it your own.

What can you do to avoid it? ASK THE WRITER IF YOU CAN USE THEIR WORK. Discuss it with them. Ask permission. Describe your goals and what you will keep and what you will change. If they say yes, do it. If they say no, respect that and don't use their work.

2. IF the writer agrees to let you use their work, give them credit.

3. If you get called out for plagiarism, take that shit down and APOLOGIZE to the writer you stole from. Apologize privately first and then publically if they agree to it. This means you have to discuss with them. It's overdue and you need to do it.

4. If you get caught plagiarizing, acknowledge it, fix it, apologize, and fix all the other shit you plagiarized before you get caught again.

5. Don't plagiarize again. Write your own shit.

6. Befriend the writers you wanted to plagiarize and see if they're willing to be writing helpers. If not, find other people and reflect on what you like about those fics you're itching to steal. Don't copy them but incorporate the way those writers use styles, voices, descriptions and whatever else. Find your own voice and use it.

7. Don't plagiarize to begin with. It's deceitful, misleading, rude, and embarrassing when you get caught. Chances are people will now question the originality of ALL your work. Your reputation is shaken and you've probably alienated many readers.

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

#Also I'm saying this as someone who actually watched quite a few of Somerton's videos #And noticed those patterns and stopped watching bc I recognised them from here #and had already learned to unlearn them after being so exposed to them here #And tbh I think anyone who hasn't had the luck or made the conscious choice to seek out ppl who pushed against those narratives #Would absolutely have fallen for this man's bullshit. It’s a little rude to tell people they should write their stories but not post them.

Obviously if somebody copies the exact same story outline or dialogue it’s a problem, it is rude and unacceptable to plagiarize, but nobody owns specific trope concepts.  using the same idea is not inherently plagiarism. 

You do not get to tell another writer that they stole your idea or shouldn’t post their own work, just because you both decided to write a coffee shop AU or a story where the reader is in danger in the hero saves them.

Can y'all please stop making and reblogging AI kink art? First off, it's plagiarism and unethical, and second off, it's fucking uncanny. 90% of the time I can tell someone is AI before looking closely at it because it gives me the heebies and the jeebies. Then you actually look and half the nonfocal elements are blending into one another and the hands are fucked up and I've seen body horror that creeped me out less than AI art does.

He's the reason Ranpo changed from his academy uniform to Baby's First Sherlock Cosplay. Why Kunikida looks like a bartender who's never allowed to taste a mocktail, why Naomi still wears a Sailor Moon fetish costume, why Kenji dresses in your grandpa's World War 2 dungarees, why Haruno wears a full sleeved turtleneck in the summer, why Yosano dresses like a 16 year old office worker. The problem with Nightshade with regard to tumblr potentially selling us out to AI is that you can't protect any un-Nightshaded work that has already been reblogged from your OP. That stuff's out there, and you're not going to be able to track it all down and deal with it retroactively.

However.

Nightshade your old stuff anyway and repost it so that any future reblogs are poisoned, but especially Nightshade anything new before posting it. That way all the reblogs of your new work will be poisoned from the start.

Snopes.com was THE fact-checking / lie-debunking website in the 2000s, covering everything from lighthearted fare like "is this a picture of Bigfoot?" to rumors about Iraq War, which at the time often spread via chain emails or Dick Cheney.

Well, Snopes still exists and I encourage you to check it out. They will investigate until they find the primary source of a photo, a quote, an article. This is especially important in a world where AI is increasingly able to fool the human eye and human ear.
