So I've been thinking a lot about the setting of Disco Elysium. Specifically it being set in late winter/early spring. It's not something I've really seen anyone else bring up.

I mean, the symbolism seems pretty obvious right? Spring is the time of new beginnings, winter is ending and we're entering a time of potential and rebirth. Definitely nothing new. But I think it goes beyond that.

I live in one of the coldest major cities in the world. Not *the* coldest, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a city with over 1,000,000 inhabitants that gets colder than it gets here. Winters are long and brutal and difficult, and when the soil itself is frozen and covered in a foot of packed snow it's really hard to believe that the world could look any other way.

And don't get me wrong, winter is beautiful. The world is quiet and picturesque. There's none of the usual dirt and debris in the streets because it's all buried under the snow. The way that fresh snow sparkles under street lights at night is one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous things I've ever seen.

It's early April right now, and the snow is melting. It's not all gone, but it's getting there. When the air starts to warm up there's this feeling of excitement and anticipation in the air. Spring is here, and any second now the world will be bursting with new life and beautiful greenery.

But it's not. Not yet.

For about a month and a half after the snow starts to melt, the world is grey. No glittering snow, no budding flowers, no swirling red leaves, just puddles of brown water and lawns of brown grass. It's like winter had ended, but the world has yet to realize that it's supposed to be spring. Until it remembers, we're all trapped in a world where there is no season at all.

Sometimes it snows, but the snow never sticks around. Sometimes it rains, but the rain never brings flowers in its wake.

That last month of winter, that first month of spring, whatever you want to call it, is my least favourite time of year. I heard it described once as "the long-preserved corpse of autumn, finally allowed to rot", and that phrase stuck with me. There are eight month old leaves on the ground, skeletal and bleached grey by a winter trapped under the ice. Without the snow to cover it, you can't ignore just how much we've let our city go to shit. The trees are bare and skeletal, and even the evergreens look washed out and grey when they're not contrasted against the snow. Most of the birds aren't back yet, so the only sound outside my window is the ever-present hum of traffic.

It's impossible to ignore the movement and the sounds of humanity, but at the same time the world has never felt so stagnant.

I think there are all sorts of comparisons you could draw here, some of which hold up better than others. The one that first comes to mind for me is sobriety- the line "Full recovery will take years, though. It’ll be depressing. And it’ll be boring. Don’t expect any further rewards or handclaps." from the "Waste Land Of Reality"o thought is one which really stuck with me on my first playthrough, and one which feels especially appropriate here. But that's just one angle.

How much of this was intentional? I don't know. Probably not most of it. Part of me just wanted to go on a little tangent about the seasonal purgatory I'm trapped in once again. But I genuinely don't think there could be a better time of year to set a game like Disco Elysium. That bleak dusty shoulder season, where all the ugliest and most honest parts of nature and civilization are on display. The time of year where I've gone through the ringer and come out the other side, but everything still looks and feels like shit. It's just a different kind of shit.

Spring isn't here. Not yet. And when it does come, it won't fix anything. There will still be garbage on the ground and pollution in the air, there will still be class inequality and senseless violence and I will still be mentally ill.

But still.

For the first time in months, I can feel the wind against my skin without it hurting.

Whatever that's worth.

I suddenly fell back into the "second-year Sakuma Rei" phase, so catch a few of my random headcanons.

✵ The second-year Sakuma Rei, who steals food from others with the words "well, since you insist☆" (NO ONE insisted).

✵ Rei, who can sometimes be found sitting motionless with an empty expression on his face, staring at nothing with sad and thoughtful eyes. When he notices that you have come, he immediately smiles.

✵ Rei, who sometimes laughs like "HO-HO-HO♪" putting his hands on his belt and dramatically raising his head.

✵ Rei, who periodically takes out completely unexpected things from his bag or pockets (a screwdriver, a folding knife, mints, plush toys and a DAMN GUN).

✵ This guy canonically often hung out on the roofs of school buildings. So I swear that sometimes he hung upside down from the roof and scared passersby (and laughing maliciously at the same time).

✵ If he trusts you enough, then sometimes, sitting next to you, he may even imperceptibly put his head on your shoulder and close his eyes. If you don't scare him off, he may fall asleep (such a kitten, meow)

✵ Sometimes, when he's not doing strangely chaotic shit, he can casually but affectionately pat you on the head and say something like, "well, the main thing is that you're happy, no matter what you do." At such moments, it begins to seem that you saw another person for a second.

✵ He likes to pick you up in his arms as much as he likes to sneak up on you from behind, that is, VERY MUCH.

✵ He pretends to be self-confident for a long time when he gets tired. It will take some time before he really admits that he needs a rest.

✵ Despite his rude speech, he never wants to offend anyone. Therefore, he immediately apologizes if he realizes that he has seriously hurt someone's feelings.

Crack!Silm AU (treated semi-seriously) where Feanor survives the battle under stars (and gains some ability for self-reflection in the process) and meets Fingolfin when he and his people make it into Mithrim. Feanor is still fiery and passionate, but his very near death experience and the experience of Maedhros being captured while he was injured and unconscious has tempered his impulsiveness somewhat.

I envision events going something like this;

- Feanor and Fingolfin beat each other up once they are in private away from their forces

- They cry (gotta get those complex feelings about each other and their father's death out somehow)

- Then they quickly turn their attentions to Angband/Morgoth (especially when they hear that Fingon has been seen leaving the camp headed in the direction of Thangorodrim) agreeing to delay their issues with each other until a later time.

- Morgoth could not predict this turn of events and is soundly defeated by the combined determination, rage, and power of Feanor and Fingolfin working together by 20 or 30 years into the first age.

On Aesthetic Attraction

I want to share a little, potentially helpful, thought to those who find attraction hard to understand.

Specifically, aesthetic attraction.

I've identified as asexual for 8 years now, and one thing that would have made this part of my sexuality a little easier to understand was having a fuller understanding of 'Aesthetic attraction'. I experience very strong aesthetic attraction and I'll often refer to people as 'hot' based on finding them really aesthetically attractive. I noticed others saying the same thing. But most explanations of aesthetic attraction would say something like "It's like finding the sunset pretty or appreciating the beauty of a painting" and for some, that may be true and it's certainly the simplest way of putting it. But for me it was something more than that, it was a lot stronger than just finding someone pretty. But it certainly wasn't sexual attraction... or really anything else. It's confused me for a long time, and I've seen other ace and aro people also sharing this confusion.

But then I realised that I'd forgotten something that is so obvious. It's called aesthetic attraction for a reason. It's being attracted to someone because of their appearance.

I saw this tweet today and felt it explains it in the best way I've seen so far.

I feel maybe we ace and aro people forget that aesthetic attraction can still, very much, be a strong attraction - a 'captivation' by someone's appearance or, as the tweet puts it, even the 'allure' of them. You don't want to do anything with them, other than, perhaps, just look at them, draw them, etc.

Let's go back to the 'appreciation of the beauty of a painting' idea and adapt it to the way in which I now think of aesthetic attraction, which I've found very useful.

So say you're in an art gallery and you're a fan of art, you appreciate the beauty of them. Or maybe you're not really a fan of a lot of art, just the occasional piece. Nevertheless, you might look at a piece and think "Oh that's a nice one, yes I like the colours, it's very pretty and well done." And then you move on after a minute, and by the end of the day you know you found it nice to look at, but you've not got an urge to see it again. That's what a lot of previous descriptions of aesthetic attraction feel like to me. You appreciate the beauty of it but there's no attraction.

However, what I feel is perhaps a more accurate metaphor for aesthetic attraction is this: You enter a gallery and in a room full of art, there's one that catches your eye. You're immediately drawn to it - there's just something about it that interests you, that captivates you. Maybe it's really beautiful to you, or maybe it's not pretty in the typical sense of the word, but there's something about its appearance that attracts you to it. You look at it for way longer than other pieces. You might take a sneaky second look at it before leaving. At the end of the day, it's the one you think about and maybe you buy a postcard or poster to put in your bedroom so you can look at it again, and again.

And that's what aesthetic attraction is, for me. It's aesthetic, not romantic, not platonic, certainly not sexual, but an attraction all the same. And that's something I think is key to remember when you're confused about the crazy world of attraction.

What if Nadakhan's father was completely making stuff up about sister realms. He was King, right? He's in a high enough position of power that it's plausible he messed up BIG time, made some wish, did some spell that screwed everything over and started the apocalypse for djinjago.

He's trying to come up with excuses to cover his tracks, remembers the destruction of the preeminent a few months earlier and is like:
