ok so. there's this thing that causes magic to exist in the world. im thinking of calling it the Veil or something?

anyway it made its way to this world somehow (they still tryna figure that out) and its magic kinda trickles into this world, and is the cause of magic.

magic users can (usually) use one type of magic at all, and there's certain kinds who can use any at any given point

magic users with one magic set/skill are called "singles" or "tals"

(some can do multiple types, but only one very well)

the term "singles" comes from only being able to use a single type of magic (creative i know) and "tals" comes from the word "talent" because, often, talent is natural and the type of magic a tal can use is natural and cannot be chosen

magic users who can use any are often called "jacks" or "nons"

the types of magic you can use as a magic user are:

mending

a mender can usually do one or two of the following: healing (living flesh), stitching (mending non living things), and melding (sewing two things together i.e. making a piece of wood and metal attach to each other)

plant [see image one at end of post]

can manipulate plants, self explanitory

light

can make bursts of light, alter how someone's eyes are percieving light, and ultimately turn invisible

mind

can manipulate people's thoughts (to an extent), and can read minds, basically

molding

and shape and mold material with bare hands

animal

can talk to animals, and on rare occasians, posses some animal abilities (i.e. can jump higher, hear better, see more, ect.)

shadow

can manipulate and move shadows, and essentially turn into one)

veil

can manipulate and move the veil itself, altering some aspects of magical reality for a small amount of time

speaking

very VERY exstensive vocal ranges, can use their voices to manipulate objects

ok so most other magical species can also use some of these to an extent, they cant get anywhere near as good as a magic user, but there is a skill set there.

telekenetics can move shit with their mind, and there are two "types" of telekenetics. some who are more down to earth or attatched to materialistic things have parts of their physical body glow when they activatr their powers, [see images two and three at bottom of post] and they have a band of like light that floats and shit, and telekenetics who are more spiritual and shit have a kind subtle of feel to them, but no glow. all telekenetics have a band of light floaty magic.

faeries are pretty much what you think. based in celtic mythology and that shit. there are mulitple types and stuff.

elves have pointed ears, are naturally good at nature-based magic types, and are very like,,, magic dense. they have very overpowering auras, especially to telepaths and mind magic users.

theres a certain species who believes those with vitiligo are blessed by the moon goddess. more on that in the works

elementals are also probably what you think. thwy can do water, earth, fire, or air based magic. some other-based magic people can also use an elemental based magic, but never to a very high extent.

plant magic users are different from earth elementals, but there are similarities, which makes it easier for either type to use the other as a subtype magic

werewolves. packs. packs are family, they dont "have" to shift on full moons, but the full moon does make them feel really good. like drugs without the drugs part. packs are family, but not neccesarily blood family. any werewolf can start a pack. the pack alpha is the leader of the back, next on heirarchy is the beta and then everybody else. dont even try to relate this to a/b/o i will murder you.

vampires have clans, they are (neccessarily) blood-sucking monsters. some do go crazy but that is under dire circumstances. getting turned does not mean you're dead (technically), but you age much slower. [see image four at end of post]

time jumpers are like time travellerrs kinda but also not really, unlike time travellers (which dont exist really) who move through time on a back and forth highway-esque situation, time jumpers move through time as though it as though it were a like, spider web? i dont quite know how to explain it uhhh. time travellers, in theory, just force reality to move them though time, while time jumpers ask reality nicely to mold them through to where they wanna go, i guess.

shifters are people who have a certain animal (fantastical or not) that they cna shapshift into (what do you mean this is obviously influenced by me being alterhuman idk what youre talking about). shifters uusually have some nonphysical traits that relate to their shifting type (i.e. a dragon shifter might hoard things, a cat shifter mightt be easily startled and chase things, a crow shifter might trade you small trinkkets as thanks).

demons are beings made of magic, which makes them really dangerous because thay are literally made of, and have full control over, something that magic users hardly have a grasp on

OK ONTO WORLDBUILDING (theres a lot less of this kinda stuff here rn)

theres a whole separate magical world with a like hiding in plain sight kinda vibe. they ustilize the natural way the Veil moves alongside ming and light magic to hide it from non-magical people.

an academy (no name yet) exists where magical people can attend to learn more about their magic and hone it and stuff, there's magic based sports events and stuff as well.

a kind of research institute exists to study magic andt the Veil. some might call them unethical ubt it's. whatever.

people who go to the academy for longer than four years do often end up as a researcher.scientist at the institute.

OKAY FIRST OF ALL TECHNICALLY SPEAKING?

it's a webcomic except not really. the way it's written is heavily based on old text-based adventure games, with a few panels with art and everything else written underneath, either from the point of view of a narrator or with chatlogues/dialogues of the main characters the comic also has some animation (or "flashes"), some occasional minigames and RPG-like games and songs, some of which made by toby fox

and yes i'd argue that a lot of things in HS aged poorly or weren't well written from the very start but the songs are literally all bangers. like even if you don't follow homestuck i cant not recommend the songs a LOT of stuff was really a product of its time too. like there's a lot of lolrandom humor, occasional jokes that would likely not fly rn that while can be excused with "these are 13 years olds and also like all them is canonically dealing with internalized homophobia, undiagnosed mental health issues or both" some parts really aged like milk

the entire plot is divided in 7 acts, with sub-acts and intermissions between each one of them to "divide" the story in chapters. like the first one is all "outside" the game the, the second introduces more characters, act 5 is the best one, act 7 is only the final flash to conclude the entire story

...and yes okay the story is, again, about a kid and his friends and a game they play together. basically on the 13th of April 2009 best boy John becomes 13 years old and recieves a game to play with his pals. It's a game that literally alters reality and that, once an item in the game is activated, summons a meteor. just roll with it this is how this universe works. "oh the gang needs to save the world then?" nah lmao the world is literally doomed their goal is to reach worlds spawned from the game, become gods, defeat the final boss and create a new universe

of course however things dont go as planned :)

all of this is explained approximately 1% into the whole story by the way

other than this, the kids are also dealing with a bunch of trolls from another world (the candy corn zodiac dudes), a bunch of NPCs from the game, alternate timelines, the literal goddamn author and lots and lots of death. Like HS is kinda infamous for killing of characters left and right. It has it's own set of rules to keep most of them relevant, like introducing ghosts, "dream" selves, the alternate timelines (Dave especially is SUCH a fun time he gets time-related powers and he gets to see SO many version of him dying :) ) or the whole way death works once the characters become gods, in which they can die only if their death is "just" (so if they were fucked up and evil and their death was justified") or "heroic" (so if they sacrifice themselves to protect someone, basically)

and. yes again homestuck isn't a story to take lightly, reading it requires a LOT of critical thinking, but it honestly has some of the best written kid protagonists I've ever read? Like with some duds of course *cough*gamzee*cough*act6vriska*cough*calliope*cough*, but most of them are really well fleshed out, with lots of flaws and good qualities, funny as hell, and for most of them their traumas and problems are integral part of their character growth - and yes while you get kind of used to see them die over and over have some of them Actually Die is. genuinely shocking and hurts so much?

like again shoutout to Dave but also Karkat because they start off as the "cool kid" and "angry kid" tropes and yet they get so much growth, learning to understand their limits and rationalizing traumas from the past. like the very last scene we get with Dave before the final battle is one of the best written pieces of media I've ever read

First of all pull a death of the author since they're kind of a douchebag and also remember that this started in 2009, likely with no intentions of making it a story as big as it ended up being. I don't think I would recommend HS to someone who "wasn't there" not for gatekeeping but specifically because. It's a product of it's time, and I think that if you finish Act 1 (in which basically nothing important happens, if not putting down the bases of the general tone) and aren't into it you likely won't likei t even when it gets so much better since

yes it's a story with very serious topics that WILL take seriously it's characters, but it's also a story that not only would drop everything from a page to another because the author decided to commit character assassination for his fav but. also one of the plot points is that the main villain of the first half went on a murder spree because he didn't want to dress like a clown. one of the plot points is that insane clown posse and guy fieri became presidents. one of the plot points is that the author has a crush on dante basco and rufio from "hook" is mentioned so many goddamn times. a plot point has buckets being used for reproduction. this is a canon line.

I will answer these to the best of my abilities <3.

1. Virgil figures it out and had been picking up on small little things but the main thing that makes things click is Roman's voice. You see When Roman's the phantom his voice is deeper, tougher, and incredibly filled to the brim with manic murder and bloodthirst. He talks like everything is a game. Roman as himself is soft and buttery smooth, Very proper and charming while retaining a calculative-ness to it. When Roman does his phantom voice once, everything immediately snaps into place.

2. Have I mentioned that Roman studied abroad for his college years? Well he did and he went to a prestigious tech college in Germany and he apprenticed under a prolific nanobot engineer. His nanobots are never larger than a fruit fly and are generally undetectable. Most of his nanobots are multi-use for hacking and messing up cameras but he has some specified for hacking, chipping, recording audio, and recording footage. He could probably make something like the MCU Spiderman suit if he pleases but he just prefers to be fashionable.

3. Logan would either be working in the government or under one of the hero agencies. Skye and I never really plan to make this a fully fledged thing so we never felt the need to flesh our his role or give him a presence at all.

4. He never brings them to his lair or have any hideouts. He kills them and tortures them right where they are <3. He ALWAYS makes sure they're secluded without any means of escape and in the dead hours of the night. He. Does. Not. Bring. Them. Back

Too much risk that way.

5. He is proficient in using knives; He has a whole collection of knives in his lair, all ornate and lethal. He also knows how to handle a gun but he prefers Knives because, like, majority of guns are clunky, obvious, and not as ornate as Knives. Knives win overall. However, He can improvise and use anything as a weapon if he so chooses. He also can just use good old fashioned hands, arms, feet and legs.

6. Yes because apparently killing corrupt people are still ✨Crimes✨. The people in heroes agencies have a black and white way or thinking which is what makes them SHIT at their jobs. They're like the police force but has powers and unnecessarily even shittier at getting the correct people.

and agh, i loved your thoughts on the demon bros sibling dynamics. plus yeahhh, its kinda hard to take anything seriously since it is an otome game, BUT who says u cant come up with your interpretations and thoughts? whos gonna stop you? anyway, each brother has a level of depth that is screaming to be fleshed out, but its all very surface level on game. belphegors burdening shame and regret from watching lilith die in front of him, and by extension beelzebub having the same feelings and/or his own guilt. LIKE. place and time!) asmodeus and lucifer, their entire relationship T_T speaking of which, satan and lucifer?! they're brothers, or say they are and the rest just kinda go with it. but does no one else wanna bring up how satan was even brought to existence? he was literally birthed from luci's wrath during the celestial war. thats like, a gateway for someone to write a long philosophical analysis about him and what it symbolizes. aghhudhwdhwhd i wish i could say more, but i'm literally out of words rn. if i was mc, i'd have to fight everyday to keep it together without breaking down and crying about this. espeically having to live under the same roof as them...ooofff

speaking of complex siblings dynamics, have you see succession? its a show on hbo. its about an ultra rich and powerful family that is ultimately, dysfunctional. theres four siblings and their relationship mean sooo much to me. i wont drop any spoilers just in case you dont know anything, but when i say dysfunctional i meant it!! one of the things i like about this show is that it doesnt have any flashbacks or show the backstories for most of the characters, rather they kinda drop pieces of information randomly and you just go ??? that happened ??? youd think it wouldnt be a good storytelling strategy bc how are you going to emotionally connect the story to your audience? but somehow, the show does it really well. for example, one of the brothers, roman, was heavily abused. and sometimes one of his siblings would go, "yeah i remember when dad used to heavily beat the fuck out of you" offhandedly, like its a cute little fun fact. and youre sitting there like....when did THAT happen??? ofc they wouldnt show it, but if you watch how roman and his father interact on show (roman is so submissive and scared next to his father) it starts to make sense. its like the "show dont tell" but they switch around to "tell and show." subtle interactions like that fully exposes a characters psychology. subtle body language goes a long way. theres also the eldest brother connor, whos seen as the father figure bc their real dad is so neglectful. but tbh connot gets shit on a lot and uuyfuefehfe theres more. i would talk about this all day. sibling angst got me on a chokehold.

Oh man, so I did a search for sibling webweaving and I was like woah what is all this lol. I had no idea there was a term for stuff like this, but I'm fascinated! I must not be getting the TikTok videos... admittedly my use of that platform is limited lol.

The thing about the otome game not delving into things means that we all get to speculate and come up with whatever we want. It's a blessing and a curse lol. On the one hand, I like being able to come up with my own interpretations. But on the other hand, it'd be nice to have just a little more depth that what we have.

I have thoughts about Belphie and specifically what happened in the OG with him. That was definitely a situation of, there is so much more going on here than they're bothering to get into. I also get that they can't really do a ton of that, partly due to the medium and partly due to the amount of characters they have to deal with. Like I think they can only choose to flesh out certain characters and the rest kind of end up on the back burner. Which is annoying because there's so much potential for so many amazing stories!

I also have a lot of thoughts about Satan and his relationship to Lucifer and everybody. It's like they give us just enough to make the story dramatic, but in the end everybody loves each other and so on and so forth. I'm not saying both Satan and Belphie shouldn't be able to reconcile what happened to them and move on, but it just happens so fast. It seems too easy. So I kind of headcanon it as, they hide everything. Not just those two, but all the brothers have a certain level of trauma that they just bury deep or at the very least don't display in front of MC. I know they make MC out to be the demon therapist, but nobody resolves their issues in one session and that's all they're normally limited to. But of course they don't have time to get into things that deeply in a mobile otome game lol.

I have not seen Succession! It sounds pretty intense. I think it's always interesting when media use different techniques to tell their story. Of course I have very little knowledge of how TV scripts are written, but for story writing, the way a character reacts can imply all kinds of past history, even if you don't know exactly what happened. Flashbacks are helpful, but I think it's interesting to have a bit of a mix. A character is always going to tell the story of their past a little differently than how it actually happened. And I find that it can reveal a lot about character just to see what they change or leave out when telling it. Of course, who they're speaking to can affect that as well. But it's definitely an interesting concept!

thoughts/ideas that ive had with the rise turtles under the cut (btw its kinda long and its just me rambling. youve been warned)

ive had 2 ideas for aus. One of them is like a splatoon au and the other one ive just titled “bad ending”. I’ll elaborate a bit more on that lower but first the splatoon stuff:

ok so the turtles might be octolings just because I want to stay more lore accurate so ig living in a sewer would be the splatoon equivalent of being an octoling before splatoon 2 (and octo dlc) events (but I really wanna just make designs for both species for all brothers anywayssss)

also new idea I literally had while typing this but what if eye masks were color of masks. so like raph having a red eye mask, mikey have a orange one, etc

ANYWAYS ive already decided (for now) what weapons each brother uses:

-raph uses a splatling, probably a hydra. or maybe tenta brella

-donnie uses a charger or a blaster (but most likely the charger.

-leo uses any splatana. I dont think he’d care which one in particular

-mikey will either use a slosher deco (since it has zipcaster) or an inkbrush. uhhhh yea their ink would probably be different colors. maybe the ends of the hair would be tinted green though. or maybe during specials itd be the same colors for all of them. btw specials would be the same as using their ninpo

splinter would be like cuttlefish to the agents in regards to the turtles. so he’s not their biological father nor the same species but hes still a father figure. april would be an inkling

OH OH NEW THOUGHT. since in the show mikey would hide in his shell sometimes I think the splatoon equivalent of that would be going squid form (or in their case octopus form)

uhhh I havent watched the movie yet but I know a lot about it SO I guess that the equivalent of the krang in this universe would be like. mr grizz. I dont think itd be like a tartar type of infection because you can physically remove the krang from your body and once youre sanitized you cant remove it (unless its like an agent 3 thing) but personally I think an infection more like the fuzzy ooze would fit better because unlike getting sanitized it makes the victim feral WHICH has more similair behaviors to the krang than getting sanitized

OK NEXT IS THE “bad ending” au idea

again, havent watched the movie yet (trying to finish the tv show first, im on episode 14) but basically its an au where everything is bad and nothing is happy (<- could not for the LIFE of me figure out how to phrase it and ended up with this. sorry lol)

but uh ig to make it a bit more clear (man my grammar sure is something rn huh?) I wanted to make an au where the ending was already “set” but I could add things like backstories and lore sooo imma have fun with that once it happens >:D

ill have to watch the movie to flesh out the events a bit more but what I have right now is that casey was never able to find/warn the turtles in time of krang invasion and that ended up with each of the turtle brothers getting corrupted. AGAIN. I WILL WATCH THE MOVIE. AND READ LORE. sorry if this seems inaccurate to movie stuff (even though this au really only needs the lore from the very beginning of the movie)

a little spoiler for the au (because I kinda wanna make little comics or stories for them..) but raph got corrupted first, then mikey (but hes not technically “fully” corrupted), then donnie, and then leo. april and casey are both still alive but splinter is missing. not dead or anything but just missing

ANYWAYS. *claps hands together* HEADCANON TIME (also ideas that ive had to draw. you can use them too if you want just credit me mk)

once raph got flipped over on his shell and instead of helping leo used him like a beyblade. he was NOT happy

mikey has (on several occasions) drawn on his brothers shells when theyre asleep or not paying attention (for donnie he draws on the battle shell lol)

if mikey really wants their attention he'll scream really loudly

sometimes leo will put stuff in donnies coffee to make him sleep especially if donnie hasn't sleep in a while (cause donnies a stubborn bitch who thinks sleep isnt real)

raph once got so mad he broke an entire arcade game and then had to go get a new one (haha L)

all of them dont think they need therapy (they do)

sometimes when donnie talks for too long leo will just go "BREATHE."

final headcanons below because I wanted to separate them from the rest (what happens in arguments depending on the brothers arguing)

mikey barely argues with anyone but when he does argue (and is serious about it) he does NOT hold back

raph and donnie arguments are usually what its like to have arguments online (donnie tries to explain why hes right and raph just goes "nuh uh ur wrong and im right")

raph and leo arguments are much more common and heated than stated above. raph will usually raise his voice towards leo and then leo will just not care and try to make a joke out of it (that always turns out badly). sometimes they even cry lol

donnie and leo arguments are VERY physical. leo would say something and then when donnie says something back hed push or shove him and then that turns into a full blown fight

they always make up though :3

Timo is fun bc her whole life Demeter's "winter until persephone comes home" rage has been going.

Her family are farmers and shepherds.

So her family had her and kept her bc there was a span where things were warming back up... then it got bad again. But as marrying age crept up, there just wasnt enough of anything to be a good dowry. So she keeps adding weaving work to her dowry, since staying warm is literally a lifeline rn. But it's slow because they still have to sell some stuff to make ends meet. Then wars broke out and it's just her, her mother, and the sheep.

So she hits 17 and is convinced shes never going to marry. Then she hits 19 and the local wars die down. Shes convinced her dowry and marriage chest is largely for her mother's sanity. Then she meets Hypnos and spends two more years Doing Her Best.

Then one of the men returning from war goes to her dad and says he'll take her if he adds some sheep to the dowry.

Cue panic from Timo at her dear friend like "but I dont even know him! My brothers dont even know him! I know I should be happy but I'm not"

Bc like part of why shes been so informal with Lykos (Hypnos) is because 1: dream, and 2: shes under the impression shes already fucked up being a woman, may as well break social rules and be super close with an unrelated guy she thinks she made up.

Which is why she has a hard freak out when he goes "I'm actually Hypnos, surprise"

Meanwhile Hypnos has 0 idea of like.. what's the protocol for mortal polite society. So it didnt occure to him that that's part of the freak out. He also doesn't pay too close attention to stories floating around the mortals so he has no idea she just did the mental math of "almost had a Zeus situation" and is reconciling that with her beloved Lykos.

All this not to even mention that overt informality involved a lot of flirting and like. Hugging when sad/happy. Talking about Women Things like bitching about period cramps that kept her up. Compliments in both directions. Because she thought he was just... a really solid part of her dreams.

Like once she calms down a few notches it's fine, but like. Panic. Which makes Hypnos panic because her response in panic was to start apologizing and falling to her knees to beg forgiveness for being so rude and presuming things about him. And he instantly feels like he fucked up telling the truth, but he as to or Hera wont help him ascend her to divinity enough to live in the House. Or bless their union, which is about the only way he could marry her instead without Hera getting pissed. Which he worries about happening at all because Panic.

So they just. Awkwardly sit there once he gets her to stop calling him Lord etc... and then she has this epiphany. A god is literally saying he wants to marry her. And hes been mostly a gentleman this entire time. Her. And she was literally just saying she loved him too much to be happy marrying a mortal man. This couldnt have worked out better actually.

Which makes the follow up "ok but you need to go tell my father or the wedding planning will still happen. Also I want to see the reaction to me marrying a god" delightful. Because flesh and ichor Hypnos gets to zip over there and shiver at her doorstep like "hi, I'm marrying your daughter. Also can I come in? Its mighty chilly out. What?"

Like it all goes well eventually, but contextually I like the implications. Also bc after Persephone comes back and the winter stops, Timo does a lil happy dance about her family being able to thrive again.

Yes I did too much research about marriage in ancient Greece and the age of usual marriage. And I was not gonna make my oc that young. So implications of being unmarried etc at 21 when most girls get married a whole lot younger.

But anyway. Rotating in my mind

is it a direct copy of the human system or not? bc i dont think they would necessarily need a pumping heart or working brain but at the same time it could be entirely possible theyve evolved/been made so that its a copy so that theyre 'closer to man' but still have the whole being in heaven thing

additionally there are so many human things we have that angels might not really need like the appendix (generally associated w holding antibodies) or tonsils (immune system) bc can angels even get sick?? but if they can then what can they get sick with? there would probably have to be some special form of parasite or bacteria or fungus or anything like that

also this creates the question of can angels get sick w human viruses because their body might not be familiar with it? like polio or worms in the brain. additionally though this would have to rely on the concept that angels can still get sick. for worms in the brain (neurocysterocytosis, right??) the angel would still need a brain and a valid way for the parasite to get TO the brain. for like necrotiizing fasitiitis (hope im spelling THAT right) the angel would still need to be able to have a valid means of infection and also something would have to be present long enough to like. eat the flesh and meat and stuff

this is all based on the way I view angels

so, i dont know how to classify my angels, but i do like imagining that the lower angels, (angels, archangels, principalities, powers, virtues, dominions) are very close to humanity, resembling them almost entirely, but winged, especially the 1st three.

Michael, in my version, he has a heart, blood vessels, and blood, but his is a gold instead of humanity's red. He has genitalia, but instead of it being a fixed thing, he can choose what he wants, most of the time he prefers having male genitalia. He does not need to breathe or eat or drink or remove bodily waste. He doesn't need to sleep either, he does that for fun. When he eats, he does it for fun, and for the taste of it. It all gets absorbed into him once its inside. He doesn't have lungs, but he moves his chest and breathes as if he does. He doesn't need lungs or the larynx to speak it just happens.

Now whats inside of him if he doesnt have a majority of a human's organs? well, I imagine he does have muscles and bones, I like imagining him as being full of light, heavenly light when you get deep enough inside of him. His core is light. Cut him deep enough, his light gets out.

Michael can give himself organs if he wants to, for example if he wanted to say, get pregnant, he'll give himself female genitalia and a womb for it, and with his body he can will himself to have a child (but, similar to humans: it has to be sexual intercourse with another being, he can't just pop them out asexually kddfhfg)

All angels are immune to all human diseases, pathogens, parasites, etc. They cannot get sick.

the highest angels, thrones, cherubim, and seraphim, are a complete different thing i dont even want to think abt rn, but i do like the higher you go, the less human-like.

i do have some ocs! ive been working on them on and off since high school and i still dont have an overarching story or anything for them but i'll go over the basics if anyone's interested o.o

the basic premise is a group of friends who start a band called good question, but ive always considered the main couple of this universe to be renee and pj (who i just renamed a minute ago dont worry abt it) even tho they aren't really in the band. the band is made up of alysha on lead guitar and vocals, juan on drums, and anis on bass, with meg as a roadie and sati as their social media manager (and also regular manager). calypso is the newest addition to the group, they're the youngest and im not entirely sure how they'll fit in but i think they're just gonna be a younger college student or something. ive sketched and drawn everyone in the group, some more than others, but i'm still really working on their designs and physical & personality traits and backgrounds and all that. i know that pj likes anime and sati & anis are exes and alysha is an amputee and renee is jewish and all kinds of stuff but i haven't really fleshed them out as much as i want to eventually. lmk if ur interested in hearing more abt them bc it would definitely encourage me to work on them more hehe

i dont really remember what my first internet media was, but i feel like it mostly started with youtube and stuff like charlie the unicorn. my first fandoms were book series, the hunger games and hp and the mortal instruments and all that, and im absolutely not into most of it anymore except the hunger games i still think they're brilliant

ok officially asking you what's up with the published drarry fanfic with the numbers filed off

Okay sorry it took me a while to get to this I had to. sleep etc. I'm making this post non-rebloggable bc im 99% sure the author has a tumblr and I don't necessarily want them to see me slagging their book off LMAO. under the cut bc its pretty long

Ok so my partner tumblr user tackythor went to the bookstore. To get some books. As one does. And someone working there was giving her recs including this book. She gave kind of an inaccurate description of it too by the sounds of things? So anyway she brings some books home including this one and I'm reading the blurb which is like "two boys who hate each other fall in love at a magic school in new zealand!!" im like ok. sounds bad but i wont say anything bc i dont want to be a dick. I read the first page and am like ok yeah this is NOT for me.

So tumblr user tackythor reads some of this book and im like ok how's it going?? She's trying to figure out how to explain it and goes ok so it's like the characters are basically Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. That's when the PENNY DROPS and she's like oh my god that's. that's LITERALLY what it is. So me being nosy I rifle through the book and find thank you's/acknowledgements to people on tumblr and ao3. It's all starting to make SENSE. Anyway a real quick google of the books title will rapidly find you the title of the og fanfiction AND a pdf of the (now deleted) fanfiction which I obviously immediately downloaded and read so I could compare the two.

ANYWAY, the book isn't great, because none of the characters really have a personality. This is because you are expected to already know who they are. Because they are harry potter characters with established personalities and backstories. None of these made it in to the book however. Ron and Hermione have been genderswapped to make it less obvious that they're Ron and Hermione. The Harry character is a real cranky dick a lot of the time, which makes sense if you realise he's Harry and has gone through a lot of trauma, but makes less sense for someone who's Literally Just Some Guy at a School. There are also no descriptions of the school beyond "there are no windows and it's grey and depressing". There are also no visual descriptions of any of the characters save Harry and Draco. There's also a lot of weird... sexism? and other isms? in the og fanfiction, most of which has been thankfully edited out, but occasionally some weird stuff filters it's way through (can't think of any examples off the top of my head rn, a lot of kinda strangely rigid gender stuff for the most part.) the general premise is they have to raise fake egg babies for a class assignment which is how Harry and Draco get together because they partner up to get back at their exes and I guess.. pretend flirt in the process? In the book it's not really clear why they don't like each other. They just sort of.... don't. Draco isn't a wizard racist but just a rich guy from a big city who pulled a couple of pranks on Harry or something. Again, not quite on the same level of trying to murder the headmaster etc etc but WHATEVS.

This book won an award which is how it got published. I think the fact that it's a queer novel set in nz with a POC as the main character and an indigenous magic system means that people sort of focused in on that, and thought it was a unique premise for a book and glossed over the fact that it is not super well written and the plot is very, very thin, because it is of course mostly a vehicle for drarry sex. (which has been edited out but the book is still fairly adult for a YA novel). Clearly the people running the award had no clue??? There are some nuggets of interesting stuff in there such as the system of magic but again, these are a bit of loose world building that aren't fully fleshed out. I could GO ON but I'd need to do another rifle through the book/have another discussion with tumblr user tackythor to refresh my memory about some of the finer details of the book lmfao. Anyway everyone's giving it really good ratings and reviews and it JUST DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME but I don't really read YA so who the fuck knows. Maybe it's good in the YA world. I find that difficult to believe though. The editing really improved the book though. Like by a LOT. But where it struggles is in the lack of fleshed out ANYTHING.

I've avoided mentioning the title so far bc i dont want this coming up in the search results for the book LOL so I’ll mention it in another post. yes im paranoid what about it

so im bad at doing research LMAO. but also because i never write with the intent to publish so i've never stressed too much about it. tbh i write a lot of canon divergent self-inserts so most of my research is actually making sure i get all the details for that right. like for this college fic i'm barely doing research on it, basically just asking my husband what phd life is like lol. but for the canonverse fic after that, i'm going to be scouring the animanga to make sure i have the correct details

20. what is your favorite trope to write?

100% the shutting-you-up-thru-kissing trope jkdjfkdjf it makes me fall to my knees

22. describe your writing process from scratch to finish.

oh lord uh so i have an idea. usually through rambling to someone or even sometimes a dream LMAO. and then i write it down on my google docs because adhd-brain will make me forget it if i dont write it down. and then i just kinda...find myself daydreaming about it? i've always kinda coped with life by daydreaming about selfships/self-inserts so it naturally just happens. and sometimes when i daydream something that seems cool, i'll write it down to flesh into an idea later. when i outline, i focus on dialogue mostly. i feel like it carries more naturally and then i can make little comments in the margins over how to narrate it. (outlining chapters also makes everything so much easier - hence why i'm trying to finish outlining this college fic before i start publishing :3) when i actually sit to write, it's pretty easy with the outline already done. it just consists of making things sound smooth and not repetitive. sometimes I *really* get into the flow of it and diverge from the outline and that's when I need to step back and go like "what am I writing about again?" idk HOW DO I, IM GOING THRU IT RN ok so when im writing for myself i just kinda give up and trust that i'll get back to it eventually but when im writing with the intent of publishing...idk. as i said before, i tend to daydream a lot at baseline, so a lot of the times, that's enough to rip me out of it if i come up with a good enough idea

33. do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?

characters! well, main characters. side characters i insert into depending on plot, like if i need a role to be filled.

uh well, i have pulled allnighters just so i can finish reading a fic in one sitting so yeah id say so jkasdjfkdsjf

idk if it was just bc i started in my formative years but like it's kinda part of my identity at this point like who am i if not someone who writes porn and angst about a 2D man in all fairness, writing was like my way of coping when things got rly bad in high school, so i drew comfort from it and then at one point, i wrote regularly enough that i started doing it for real

44. any writing advice you want to share?

biggest thing i'll tell any writer whether they're new or experienced: write as if no one is ever going to read it. because then you'll just write it. prioritize writing for you. it's what gives you enjoyment, you just happen to sometimes share it for others as well. i found writing to be much more enjoyable that way and people just happen to like some of the stuff i post idk jadkfjkdf like i'm even trying to embody this when i write multi-chapter fics that i intend to publish

49. do you want to be published some day?

ehhhhhhhhh not for money in an official sense? i like writing fanfic. i like writing as a content creator, not as like as official author that gets printed copies and is subject to random critic comments. although the attention and appreciation for my writing would be nice (like if there's fanfic on it LMAO), it's never my intention :) i write for my enjoyment

also when i first started stanning atz it was wooyoung who pulled me in !! and weirdly i stayed loyal for a LONG time even when hongruella looked THAT fine during the last tour (literally. saw hongruella in the flesh on my bday. imagine. how did i stay loyal) but i always thought it was a bit weird?? bc i usually gravitate towards the introverts for literally any group/artist (tho i.. only stan atz rn.. oop hongjoong u better jot this down rn i am the most loyal atiny ever/j) so i thought it was a little bit out of order for me to like and stay loyal to THE extroverted social butterfly.. but then my bias line was completed with both infps aka my mbti.. and it suddenly made sense dhsjsh i just ! gravitate towards san a lil now AND ESPECIALLY AFTER THIS CONCERT he’s truly one of my fav comfort ppl like.. he said something and immediately after i was like WRITE THAT DOWN!!! and opened my notes app to write it down LMAO my friend was like wtf are u doing and i was like uh. comfort words??

ohhhhhhh this is actually such a cool question do u mind if i give you like a top 5? this isn't me going 'well they're all just so good how could i possibly choose' it's just bc i'm taking this as what my favourite scene is GENERALLY and not in regards to the writing, and as it is bc taob is such a personal story for me a lot of the scenes have been really impactful and cathartic to write, and also i have scenes that mean a lot to me bc of what they meant to OTHER PEOPLE and just bc of the general reaction they got, so this is just all of that lol (i feel like none of that made sense. im half-awake rn allow it)

okay in no particular order we have;

the aurora scene in ch8 (b1). this scene is the first proper time i let my own personal writing style go a bit feral in taob. up until that point, i'd been too nervous and had actually been trying to mimic the way muffinlance wrote, bc i thought that was what people would want. but i knew this scene was incredibly emotional and my writing style works better with stuff like that, so i let myself write it how i wanted to write it, and the response that scene got and still gets to this day is insane

sokka seeing zuko's scars in ch26 (b2). this is quite simply an occasion where i was really proud of my own writing, which is actually really rare for me bc im so so fucking critical of myself (but im trying to get better at Not Doing That so who knows). i'd been planning the metaphors and fleshing out this scene for weeks beforehand and it was just one of those writing moments where you're like 'omg! here it is! that scene i've been excited for!'

zuko naming his feelings as rage in ch28 (b2). this was so so so important for me personally. zuko had all these feelings and there was that recurring metaphor of the eagle-hawk and it had gone on for 18 chapters by that point, and we finally got to see him accept that it was anger that he was feeling. it was very much a 'name the monster' moment and it probably shouldn't have been as cathartic for me as it was, but i just think there's something so important in finally accepting that, regardless of how ugly it is, regardless of how much you don't want to be, you are angry

the zuko alone chapters 29/30 (b2). OKAY I KNOW THESE AREN'T SCENES AND ARE IN FACT ENTIRE CHAPTERS BUT THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THESE THAT I KEEP COMING BACK TO AND I DONT KNOW WHY. there are a lot of moments in these chapters that stick out to me. my favourite bit of imagery in the entirety of taob (and one that was very much on purpose and is very much going to be mentioned again) is the scene in ch29 where zuko is staring up at sozin's portrait. And then there's also all the conversations had between zuko and azula in these chapters, and them holding blue fire on the beach, and zuko trashing his room etc. i literally couldn't tell you why these all hit me so hard but chapters 29 and 30 are probably the chapters i've reread the most out of the entirety of taob

the fever dream sequences in ch33 (b2), particularly the stage one. i'd known ever since the beginning of taob that i wanted to go ham with the writing here, but it also happened that ch33 fell over a time where i was really self-conscious about my writing. i thought taob had become really average lately and that i was losing the spark that attracted so many people to my work in the first place, and i was actually in quite a bitter mindset, to the point that reading other people's fics filled me with this really ugly jealousy. i'd like to say that ch33 was me healing from that, proving to myself that i could still write good things, but it was actually quite a petty 'fuck you look what i can do' that i wrote almost in a fit of anger. but the end result was the same, and every time i feel self-conscious, i remember that ch33 was not that long ago and i managed to churn out that shit while doing my economics exams, so i can't be that awful
