the other thing that makes me unreasonably mad about shadowhunter chronicles ao3 is that the names are all wrong. why does ao3 force everyone to use like. the FIRST iteration of a character’s name. and not the RIGHT one. i understand the organizational purpose but surely you can update what name is the official name to use when canonically the character’s name changed. hello.

I have watched more than half of Critical Role Vox Machina
"I Heard Campaign 1 starts mid-campaign, is it hard to follow?"
It's only hard depending of how familiar you are with D&D in general and how resilient you are to the awkwardness of "We are still trying to see how this streaming thing goes." In terms of the story and plot it's easy to follow, if you can get over the way it is being told.
Despite the claims that it starts mid-campaign, it in fact starts right after a major Time-Skip, so the first episodes does establish plenty of things. You just have to accept this is a story that starts in the middle rather than the beginning. If you ever had to deal with having to find a starting point for Doctor Who or COmicbooks, you can deal with Vox Machina. Just accept that there were off-screen adventures.
if that is still an issue, the show eventually does offer a video narrating the pre-stream adventures that is shown during episode 36. If that is too long for you to wait, I think someone has uploaded it to youtube as it's own thing.
"I heard of Tiberius/Orion Acaba and how he eventually left because he was toxic. can I jump straight to the epsidoe when he leaves?"
You can easily skip most of the pre-Briarwood stuff and just pretend that also happened off-screen. tho there are some major plot points present that you will not get to see. The Briarwood arc is a bit more complicated, because he is present for the first four episodes and you will start with the arc already started, but if you watched the animated series and then jump to episode 28 (which while not the episode when officially announced, it is the first episode after his departure. SPoilers: The quality of the show increases immediatly) as long as you understand the show did some tweaks and should, you will not be lost.
If you think you can tolerate Toxic People, you can watch episodes 24, 25 and 26, skip 27 (seriously, even if you can tolerate Orion, it is at best a dull, boring episode. There is a reason why whenever anyone talks about this episode, the only thing they can mention is Orion and his goddamn mirrors) and go ahead with episode 28.
"I heard Tiberius was a Good Character with an Awful Player, is it true?"
In my perosnal opinion, Tiberius was a good baseline for an interesting arc. But he was also the kind of character who can become annoying. I personally think people are more enamored with the idea of what Tiberius could have been than him being a pretty fleshed out character (bear in mind, for the first 20 or so episodes, most of Vox Machina doesnt feel very fleshed out, again part of the initialy awkward first phase). Likewise, this might be a possible unpopular opinion but... I dont feel Tiberius had as close a friendship as Vox Machina as some might think? this comes back to the player and stuff, but by the end I felt Tiberius saw Vox Machina more like a professional partnership than the family the rest of the characters became.
In terms of Orion, yes he becomes increasingly annoying as the show goes. Initially you dont notice it, but as the show goes, he becomes harder and harder to ignore. He eventually tries to take part in every. single. scene the rest of the cast is doing and tries to steal the spotlight. He tries to force his storyline even when other things are going down. etc. etc. (and this is not counting the stuff regarding him as a person). Tiberius is tolerable in small doses, but Orion cant shut the ef up.
"I heard because of her job, Ashley Johnson's Pike had to leave the show and the animated show expanded her role."
This is a half-truth. Because of Ashley's commitments, she could not consistently be in the show and, in the pre-Briarwood stuff Pike is given a send-off.
BUT Pike continues to show up after that and shows up a solid number of times, it's just she cant be there consistently. In fact, Pike showing up in the middle of the Briarwood arc to save everyone's ass and take part in the final battle? Pike was present in the show and played by Ashley via skype. the thing they changed was that they gave Pike an arc that wasnt present in the show.
Pike is the Gandalf of Vox Machina. She constantly has to leave to do something else, tho in this case it's because of the unpoken rule of trying to not use a player's character if the player is not present.
ETA: Another way you can REALLY tell Orion was no longer welcome is that, whenever Ashley had an open slot in her schedule, the rest of the cast would immediatly jump at the chance to have her join them for the session.
Here be (minor) Spoilers
Now here is an interesting thing I noticed. Which is that because of the Chroma Conclave events, Whitestone sorta becomes Vox Machina's base of operations, replacing the keep they had been given by the king of Emon. In the main show, this is a simple change in Status quo. but for the animated show it would mean they got that old keep and are about to abandon it merely like a few weeks after obtaining it, and that's kinda funny.
Other than that, it is interesting to see how the actors do become more comfortable portraiyng their characters and get past that initial awkwardness where it still feels like Players first.
it's also interesting how often a huge narrative moment will have a Natural 20, either saving the characters or fitting the narrative so well.
it is a difficult medium for one to adapt. and there are moments in which the characters will scre-up easy tasks because of the rolls, which can be funny or frustrating. But the high points are really good. and there were some moments and battles that felt as engaging as in any other medium. The Dragon attack in Emon was more tense than The hobbit's use of Smaug. I was genuinely cheering when Grog delivered justice on the tribe that abandoned him.
And the story feels as High Fantasy Epic as you can get from more "normal" storytelling mediums. and Critical Role is a great example of how D&D can be a game, but it's also a form of collective storytelling.

Kit's Diary
Chapter 1
Author's note: Little warning, there might be a bit of jumping inbetween the topics in this chapter, so if you dont understand what by the Angel is going on, please just leave a comment and I will try to explain. Also, if you see any mistakes that are bugging you, you're welcome to correct them, I won't be mad. Thank you for reading the story. 🤗
Dear Ty,
Dear Tiberius,
Hello Ty,
Hello Tiberius,
My beloved T
Why do I even give a fuck about that? It's not like you're going to read it anyway.
Dear Ty,
I don't know why, but apparently I gave Tessa the impression that there's something wrong with my mental health.
(Duh, I saw my Dad getting ripped in half, one of best friends murdered and raised from the dead by my crush and me, confessed to my crush, got rejected, found out I'm heir to the Land of Faeries, almost died, left people I loved behind to start a new life, got my sister kidnapped and realised I'm a danger to everyone I love. Who on earth would be okay after that?)
But anyway, Tessa talked to Emma about how she deals with all her trauma and Emma answered: "Revenge. (insert murderous Emma face) Also I got a diary. You may be surprised but writing really calms me down." And Tessa gathered that if it can calm Emma down, it can calm anyone. So she suggested this to me and gave me an empty book for notes. Obviously I was like "there's no way I'm doing this", but right now, sitting here and thinking about you again, maybe writing someone what happened would actually be a good idea. Of course you will never read this, but you are the only one who actually knows the real me, and not just the smiley face I put on every day. And maybe it's good that I'm writing this in a book, so I'm not tempted to send it to you unless I want to rip the whole book apart.
Anyways, we're back at Cirenworth and everything is back to normal. Well maybe almost everything. I don't feel like Mina is safe anymore when she is alone in her room. Maybe you'll think that this is kind of overreacting, but because of that I simply cannot sleep in my room anymore, so Tessa made me a bed in Mina's room. But apart of that, I guess our life is getting a bit more normal now.
Also Emma and Jules can finally continue to renovate Blackthorn Hall. Jules also finished his mural and they send us a photo. It's so beautiful, you should totally visit them soon to see it. On that note I'm glad that you can't paint that well, or I would actually faint. You can't be that perfect. Though I don't even know if you can paint. I never saw you do it. Another thing I never learned about you. Sometimes I regret not being your friend anymore. But it hurts too much. I can't stand being by your side when you fall in love with someone else, knowing that I will never get over you. I don't know why I thought that I ever could. Dating Hazel made me realise that. Also when you appeared unannounced in the kitchen of Blackthorn Hall and I immediately thought that you got even more beautiful than when we first met. I guess I'm just doomed to love a person who will never love me back.
But I have to go to bed now, otherwise Mina won't fall asleep.
I love you, Ty. I love you.
And I always will.
Kit
P.S. I'm sorry for jumping between the topics so much, but I'm just super confused right now.

Do any of your characters have secret references or meanings to their names? I’m always a fan of those!
When I name characters, I most often choose a name based on how it sounds/how it would be said and if that sound communicates the character in some way. In some ways the impression of the name and its relation to other names can create symbolism for the character. However, there are times where the names are direct references to something, and with the list I made below they will be at the end bc the explanation may be longer.
(This is exclusively splat ocs because adding all my other ones will make this list too long lmao. Plus I might talk a bit about their inspirations too!)
All this stuff under the cut!!!
Starting with Peur, I chose the name bc it just sounded nice with the plosive P and if the vowels arent stressed. I always notice that if the u and e are switched it becomes 'puer' which means 'boy' in latin. Peur is inspired by pineapples, Mallorca and the summery vibes of Splatoon 3
'Orion' was a kinda cool name I chose bc I didnt wanna go with 'octavian' because it sounded too basic. I think his name adds some mystery and implies he is a classy person too (but also I am a critical role fan so the name sometimes reminds me of tiberius lol). The character is inspired by takoyaki, red son from Monkie Kid, daffy duck (mainly the voice), RPDR, saucy santana and jjba.
Oriana and all the octavio cousins have their names bc they just sound cool and fitting with their character and aesthetic, for example Olav sounds serious but memorable (for a politician) and Odaliah sounds regal and sophisticated. Oriana's name to me sounds like it would belong to someone popular so yeah. Every octavio oc I made is inspired by a musical artist and Beyonce's Renaissance album lol.
Troy's name is a direct reference to the city of Troy in Greco-Roman stories (Ilead and Aeneid), the city that is destined to fall from the Greek invasion (dont worry Troy usnt destined to die or anything lol). I think it fits because Troy is a history nerd and he just chose this name (but also it could reference Aeneas from the Aeneid who left Troy to found Rome in myth). Other than that, Troy is inspired by some JPEGMAFIA songs and my fave superhero Miles Morales (especially after atsv)
Ace's name for starters is just a short but cool name and it also refers to the ace of playing cards, not assigned to any number (like agents in the NSS) but still apart of the deck. I made the character whilst listening to MF Doom who is one of my fave rappers because of their comic book/supervillain aesthetic (check out the song crosshairs)
DJ/the Captain was called Hubert sorta as a joke lmao. Basically my sibling joked that a lot of the character names I come up with are quite goofy (shes right lol) especially after I showed her all the splashtags I made for fun. So at some point I was designing my own versions of the agents and I made a really short agent 3 with a big forehead, a receding hairline and bad posture who acts like an edgy teen and gets bullied at school (I thought it would be intersting to make this kind of scrunkle) and I was like 'ok well this is HUBERT'. I will talk about him more/share some concept stuff another time to keep it short but hes inspired by gorillaz phase 1 and psychonauts, also he moves around /poses awkwardly like the spot in atsv, especially with the shoulder and neck posture.
I kept the naming for Neo quite easy, just Neo and simple as that. However my Neo 3 took this name because its quite mysterious, lacks any attatchment to gender (Neo is agender) and is better than their birth name. But now that I think about it, its a Matrix reference and Neo is a revolutionist who rejects the system! Neo is inspired by Hobie Brown in atsv and Mayday from No Straight Roads (and yes Neo's freinds are also NSR inspired too)
I had to come up with Teryon's name when naming some files of the first few drawings of him. The name sounds kinda serious but also the shortening to 'Terry' implies he is also casual, the average friendly guy. Terry also sounds kinda like 'teddy (teddy bear🥺)' to me but I didnt want to be too on the nose. I made him bc I wanted to make a fuzzy inkfish character since the ones I saw on this site looked really cool, also Mr. Grizz's boss fight attacks looked cool to me. Terry is inspired by music by Thundercat, Tame Impala, Childish gambino and Zuke from No Straight Roads
Ok so for this last one, TW fordeath, murder and a bit of gore because I will be mentioning the Ilead and Achilles/Hector stuff.
Anchilles (omg thx crystalmonk!) Is a name I definitely thought through, the 'Achilles' bit doesnt refer to a heel or anything but actually the character himself and the gruesone thing he did to Hector in the Ilead. Achilles is a Greek soldier and Homeric hero who killed Hector (a Trojan warrior) as revenge for killing his best bro (bit fruity ngl). He was so angry at Hector for doing this that he continued to beat his dead body and he cut holes in his ankles, tied rope through them and attatched the rope to his chariot so he could drag Hector as he charioted back to the Greek camp. So yeah, Achilles biting people ls ankles is a reference to that. The smallfry is inspired by King from the owl house and ellie from No Straight Roads (a little alligator with a helicopter for some reason).

ngl i dont know why people hated keyleth but loved tiberius early on in c1? i mean. i know why. but tibs was so fucking unfunny and mean to everyone and keyleth was just... mildly awkward.
for fucking real like for every "ooh i loved tiberius his player just made bad life decisions" there were 3 "keyleth is not perfect therefore i wish marisha was dead"

Things I took note of in CRC1 episodes 30-32:
Keyleth charmed Vax's daggers to be super hot, whilst hurting him in the process (Marisha did it by accident, she forgot she wasnt playing Pathfinder), he was still like, "cool, I can work with this". After the fight, Keyleth feels super bad about it, heals his hands and Vax holds her hands for a few seconds longer than he should --love this interaction.
Then, later on, Keyleth pulls Vax to the side after he leaves the party for a few minutes and let's him know that they (or at least she) notices when he sneaks off and that shes watching him. Which is her awkward way of trying to tell him that she and the rest of the crew do worry when he does these things and he should think about that more before he goes off on his own. Which is super nice, I think it's nice for Vax to be told everyonce in a while that even though his job is one of the more dangerous aspects in the party and is necessary, that they do worry about him.
A little earlier, the crew is trying to get info out of a guard when the guard let's slip that he and his compatriots were the ones who killed the people and then strung them onto the Sun Tree. Vax confirms with the guard that this means the guard was also responsible for the child being killed and strung up, which the guard admits to, and Vax promptly slits his throat, a few minutes before he told the guard he was contemplating sparing his life. Then mutters the guard was a "piece of shit". I agree Vax, I agree. Wouldve done the same myself. Liam just roleplay these dramatic moments with Vax so well that it kind of takes the breath put of you
Scanlan takes down an entire house by himself (so proud of you boo), there was also a triceratops included, which I felt was a pretty poignant part in the experience with the third Jurassic World movie coming out next month
Not gonna lie, I was getting a little annoyed with Matt's DMing in regards to not letting Marisha attack the mist right from the onset saying it was meta gaming. I mean, maybe it kind of was, but also, Keyleth knows the mist is associated with vampires so she could hypothetically come to the conclusion that this mist is vampiric in nature and I just really wanted for that Trinket kill along with Keyleth sliding across the table after Vax like a badass to end on a high note...and ultimately it just turned into a lot of meandering around for a while and kind of threw off the energy the group was giving.
Also, we found out Grog is potentially a swiftie, which I kind of love for him.
Almost forgot...Vax's conversation with Percy where he tells Percy if he hurts his sister or anyone else in the group, then Vax will take care of him. Which ends in Percy agreeing and then saying in surprise, "I have a sister!" And Vax responds with, "it's great isnt it?" Love that interaction
So far, I'm really liking the energy of the group without Orion around. I mean, he had his moments, but everything just flows so much better at the table without him. And I hate saying it, since I dont mind Tiberius as a character, but you hardly notice his absence.

so i know the 'dont wait for the translation, answer me now!' quote from the trial scene in Undiscovered Country was a reference to the cuban missile crisis negotiations at the UN, but it is a fantastic fourth wall breaker if you consider kirk to be utterly clueless regarding the klingon language.
Tumblr media
see, when chang turns to kirk and shouts 'dont wait for the translation, answer me now!' and he ANSWERS.. it's one of two things to me..
the first is.. it's like.. i know you don't speak klingon, Tiberius, so now we're watching one of those scenes in a movie where they dispense with the subtitles and translation delays using a clever close up or subtle focus pull to lift us from one context to another. and it didn't break immersion!
Tumblr media
but the second perspective is that kirk has done his whole 'im very smart but theres no need to advertise it' thing where he is actually this whole time fluent in perfect klingon and his disdain for them plus the potential strategic benefits of keeping it secret make it something to be mentioned only in absolute necessity or when there is no loss of tactical advantage or clout in doing so.
it's great; it works on its own without the need for a history lesson. in my head it is a deliberate pseudo-fourth wall break that dispenses with potential clunkiness at a key moment in the scene where the energy and pacing need to flow unabated. i'll shut up now.

i named my dude "Tiberius" and like to imagine that he was named after Capt. James TIberius Kirk from Star Trek, and one of the few things he remembers is the courage of Captain Kirk and thinks elves are Vulcans or some shit. Playing with "The Dark Urge" character origin and therefore "The Haunted One" background esp works really well for all of this because it constantly talks about how you dont remember anything and how your head hurts and so it sells my internal narrative that this dude just went on the bender of his life and is eternally battling the mother of all hangovers while staggering through an epic fantasy adventure that he only half believes is real
