Dover Castle is maybe the most haunted place I've ever visited. The most intense "shine" I've gotten in a single instance was in Berlin, but this venue was the "loudest" overall.

Dover Castle Highlights Great Tower

The Great Tower

The most popular activity at Dover Castle is exploring the Great Tower, which was built in 1180 by King Henry II. There are three floors to explore, each of which has been decorated and furnished to resemble life inside a lavish medieval palace.

Admire the vibrant decorations of King Henry II's bed chambers, sit on his throne in the throne room, and stroll through the banquet hall, which was built to impress noble guests and host special events.

Tunnels in Medieval Times

The dark maze of tunnels beneath Dover Castle was constructed in the 1200s to protect the castle from French sieges during the Middle Ages. With canons lining both sides of the tunnels, they were carefully designed to defend the castle from its most vulnerable side.

Take a stroll through these tunnels and try to imagine what life was like during the dark days of wars and invasions. Dover Castle will host a special "siege re-enactment" event at various times throughout the year where with your UK visa you can witness a real-life siege unfold before your eyes.

WWI Fire Control Post

Dover Castle played an essential role in both world wars due to its strategic location. During WWI, the castle was designated as the military headquarters in charge of protecting Dover's harbor.

The large anti-aircraft gun from 1915 is still operational at the Fire Command Post within the grounds of Dover Castle. There are frequent demonstrations on weekends throughout the summer where you can see the gun in action!

The Subterranean Hospital

During WWII, a hospital complex was built beneath the castle, separate from the medieval tunnels. The hospital was constructed in the 1940s to treat and stabilize injured soldiers before transporting them to larger and better-equipped hospitals further inland.

As you make your way through the underground hospital, you'll come across a series of re-created rooms designed to give you the full experience of life as an injured soldier during WWII. The sights and sounds will transport you to a more sinister period in British history.

Tunnels During WWII

You can also explore the "secret wartime tunnels" within the same tunnel complex as the hospital. This is where the dramatic "Operation Dynamo" was planned and carried out.

Thousands of British soldiers were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in a race against the clock as German forces approached. Inside this secret tunnel, you'll be able to see this incredible event unfold with special effects and real-life footage. So get your Dover castle tickets.

Lighthouse of the Romans

The oldest surviving lighthouse in England can be found on the grounds of Dover Castle. This magnificent Roman lighthouse was built on the cliffs to aid ships sailing across the channel into Dover's harbor. It was built in the year 43 AD and is located next to the old Saxon church, which was built around 1000 AD!

The Bunker's

You can have the thrilling experience of an Escape Room inspired by real Cold War events inside the secret wartime tunnels. This activity is enjoyable to do with friends or family because you will be working together to gather clues and complete challenges.

The PWRR Museum

The PWRR Museum, which is the official museum of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, is located next to the Great Tower. This small but well-organized museum depicts the history of the royal regiment dating back to the 1500s.
