Whole duck tonight! For the sixth night of poultry week I cooked a whole @mapleleaffarms duck on the @kamadojoe Joetisserie. It was seasoned with @meatchurch Garlic & Herb and was given a glaze of local honey, fresh rosemary, thyme and sage. It’s served with duck fat roasted baby yellow and red potatoes and steamed green beans. Just moved to Boston for school, do you have any favorite dispensaries?
Boston's hottest dispensary is: Portland, Maine. A scenic two hour drive from Beantown, this place has it all—cheaper weed, louder weed, more kinds of weed.

Neo hobbles into the front desk of the Continental dé Torchwick, Hush, in hands.
The front desk clerk, Junior, looks at her as she makes it to the front.
Neo: I'm here to see Cinder Fall.
Junior just looks at Neo dead in her eyes.
Junior: Ms. Fall is in the lounge waiting for you.
Neo slowly walks away past the front desk as Junior sighed. This would only lead to trouble.
In the lounge Cinder, pick up her wine glass and took a sip, and as she did, she caught sight of pink and brown eyes looking down at her.
Neo slowly walked downstairs, Roman turned to see his long-time best friend make her way to the smirking Miss Fall.
Neo stopped just in front of Cinder. the only thing standing in their way was a table. Cinder reached for her fork before plucking some meat and eating it.
Cinder: Mmm, duckfat, it makes all the difference.
Neo said nothing, just glaring daggers at Cinder.
Roman: Trivia.
Cinder: Have you seen the menu here? A lot of options...
Roman, trying to stop Neo from doing something bad.
Roman: Trivia, listen to me...
Cinder, smirking: A woman like me can stay here a long time and never eat the same meal twice.
Roman: Trivia, just walk away.
Cinder: Yeah, Trivia walk -
She was cut off as Hush found its way to be lodged in Cinder's throat. Cinder just looked wide-eyed as she gurgled and choked on her blood, before finally dying.
Roman just looked at the result and then back at Neo.
Roman: What have you done?
Neo looked at Roman before walking away.

Whitewashing in Eldarya: A man of science rant about beemoovs bullshit pt.1
What is whitewashing?: this word has a couple of different uses, but in this context I mean deliberately making things more 'white' and thus alienating and erasing POC.
For example, they try so hard to make Lance white. Bitch, just draw him like god intended and stop complaining!
Okay introduction over. Let's cover the less extensive topic I want to talk about.
Huang Huas character design:
Tumblr media
She looks weird. I always hated her character design. I think what happened is they didn't know that darker skin has to be shaded different.
She looks grey (in retrospect, this may be coz she wears a lot of orange and yellow, despite having a pink undertone. Although, she should not have a pink undertone, when the skin is this dark, its more accurately described as having a red undertone), probably because the artist messed up and thought that simply lightening her complexion would make her face look less.... I dunno. The point is that it didn't work as intended.
Dark skin is more reflective compared to light skin. It might appear that the glow simply looks more prominent because of the contrast, but that's not all there is to it. Melanin absorbs UV to protect them from sun damage and it also reflects some of it. The absolute darkest skintones of sub Saharan Africans provide as much protection as SPF 25 sunscreen. (The minimum recommended by dermatologists for everyday wear is 50) So, my point is, you can't just use light skin techniques to draw Dark skin. You need to make the contrast between the lightest and the darkest colors more drastic.
Her undertone... It makes me want to just evaporate. I love good art and I love beautiful people, this is simply not it dear. If you look up a tutorial for drawing dark skin they might tell you that the darker you go, the redder to make it. This is because there's five different types of melanin, two of which I'll tell you about. Eumelanin is more prominent in dark skin, it has brown and black subtypes. I, for example have a warm undertone (yellow, not pink) so I have this. Pheomelanin is more prominent in lighter skin and this gives ginger hair and freckles it's red color. (I assume it's a recessive trait, since light skin is a recessive trait) So, in lighter skin, there's a lack of eumelanin, the pink color of the skin is mostly from the blood underneath and the yellow undertone (if you press on your flesh for a long time and release you will see it) is from subcutaneous fat. (which is not white like duckfat) The darker you go, the redder the undertone gets from the eumelanin covring the yellow fat. The blood doesn't get conealed because it's not as deep down as the fat.
Okay, I'm done talking about her skin. Let's get angry about something else: her facial features.
She has basically no afrocentric facial features, I accredit this to the artist not knowing how to draw them, so I'll try not to roast too much.
She has dark skin, which is a dominant trait, but a small nose, thin lips and straight (alright, wavy) hair, which are all recessive traits. This is a rare combination, but not impossible.
(They do have very simmilar face shapes, supporting my phoenix magic skin color change theory)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her home is the land of the Ren Feng Huang, her people have been described by Erika as "dressed in Chinese style clothes". I feel like this is a microagression, please shut up Erika... She, so far is the only dark skinned Ren Feng Huang. So the case might just be that her Phoenix powers grant her dark skin to protect her from the sun's flames and she's just as white as Huang Chu (who has freckles, that's pheomelanin). Feng Zifu looks vaguely east Asian, but he also has a lot of European features like the sharpness of his cheekbones and his deepset eyes. (And his non-existent lips 💋)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Feng Huangs are made out to be this holy Saint never did anything wrong ever totally crimeless nation, so they might just have good immigration policies, I dunno.
So anyway, her homeland looks like a very simplified view of 'china'. Bunch of bamboo, cliffs, terrace farming. I assume the climate is what we can expect from "china", humid summers and cold winters. (Although China is fucking huge. The country has more than one climate region.)
For breathing warm, humid air, wide noses are most adapted. For breathing cold, dry air, tall and long noses are adapted, for dry, hot air, hooked noses are most adapted. She appears to have a small, pointy nose with narrow nostrils, which is not well suited for any climate and is a recessive trait.
She has a little mouth ad well as moderately thin lips. Lip size is not that important for survival, but I should note that thin lips emit less heat, therefore they're better for cold environments. Big lips are a dominant gene, thin lips are recessive. If someone has one copy of the dominant gene (one copy comes from each parent) and one recessive, then the dominant gene will determine their appearance, but they can still pass on the recessive gene to their offspring. Some genes work together to make an in-between. Small lip gene+big lip gene makes something in between. (I don't know how recessiveness effects this phenomenon) Two toned lips (pigmentation on top, no pigmentation on the bottom or partial pigmentation on the bottom) are very appropriate in her case, kudos for that. (Im pissed that they forgot it when they drew Lance and Val. I demanded an apology) Also, some people with a lot of melanin often have yellow tinted scleras because there's some of it there too. This used to scare me because I thought they had liver failure. It's not something that every dark skinned person has, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Okay, now about hair. This has to be the most controversial topic for some fucking reason. Thick, dark and curly are dominant traits. Thin, light and straight are recessive. A gene combination of curly and straight work together to make a softer curl pattern or wavy hair. (Wavy hair is just very lose curls, I have wavy hair but it appears straight because it's silky and thick, causing gravity to straighten it. When i was a child it used to be a lot thinner and i had really nice 2A waves.) I don't know what benefits there are to having straight, thin hair, but apparently this weak recessive trait is so beloved by our one and only beemoov that they made nearly every single POC character without curls. Thick, curly hair is better at basically everything it's supposed to do. It shrinks into a dense protective layer, shielding the head from the sun like an afro helmet, it traps more air underneath to keep the skin warm when it's cold, it's straight out just harder to pull out. I don't know which dumbass, cousin banger ancestors of mine decided that straight hair is pretty enough to srlect for, but I digress. I can live with it. (At least I have green eyes, which is the only recessive trait that I find beautiful. It's still dominant over blue though)
Have a look at this handy chart:
Tumblr media
Okay I'm done with Hua. Pt.2 is about Lance and Valkyon because I'm low-key obsessed with them. My bebes.
Have a great day! (I swear of this doesn't spark a conversation nothing will.)

five things you never get tired of writing
Thank you for the tag, @danpuff-ao3!
So, I have to confess that I've grown to hate talking about writing and my process, as I'm constantly afraid of coming off as ultra-pretentious or self-involved. But hey, as my therapist likes to point out, that's my trauma talking, baby! So it might actually be a helpful exercise to think about the parts I really do love.
Before I get started, I'm tagging @mia-ugly, @soft-october-night, @weatheredlaw, @racketghost, @iodhadh, @jaggededges123, @veganthranduil, and anyone else who wants to do it!
the body and everything with it
I'm a bit obsessed with everything visceral. I love imagery of the body - the bones, the tissues, the skin and sinew. I love the constant process of our growth and erosion of ourselves into death. I'm just fascinated with our constant war - we are always both our body and at odds with our body. We spin complex, intricate stories to escape the simple fact that we are animal - put on this earth to eat, drink, fuck, and die. I'm fascinated by the concept of holiness as a rejection of the body, like the Cathars taught. If earthliness is evil, and the body is earthly, then all things related to the body must be evil. We're told that the saints denied themselves - food, companionship, drink, touch. How can the one thing that we are freely given be evil? I can't stomach it. Look, even our language is somatic. I can't stomach it. Get a leg up. One foot on the ground. Head in the clouds. To be separated from the body is death, and I want to roll around in the visceral aspects of language and description.
2. trivia and scientific/historical minutiae
Writing is fun for me because I'm a bit of a magpie about trivia and love to drop in little details about parchment-making or historical polar expeditions or so on. I'm really thriving and enjoying writing my Frankenstein story as there's so much to include - details about anatomical plates, about Luigi Galvani, about historical dissection and surgery. Picture it as a nerd shoving a book under your nose going look, look, this is so cool! That's basically what I'm doing every time.
3. food
Okay, so this is sort of cheating, because all food is a body of some kind or another - plant or animal - and thus we're back to my fixation with the visceral. But I have a deep love of food and cooking, so I can spend ages on the line of cream that rises to the top of milk, the scent of garlic and onions in a cast-iron pan, the tender bruising of a plum at the bottom of a bag, the perfect scent of a sprig of rosemary. Food has always been a focus in my family, despite how completely poor we were, and my mom's treat to herself was to pick up a food magazine now and again - usually Gourmet or Saveur. I would spend ages with her carefully poring over each brightly lit page, admiring the way the light gleamed on olive-oil tossed pasta, and how it disappeared into the powdery dark cocoa of chocolate truffles. We couldn't afford it then but I learned a language of food I had not yet tasted. As we got a little more secure and comfortable, my mother would bring home treats - preserved lemons in a ball jar, duckfat in a quart container in the freezer. I eventually learned how to cook and attended culinary school, later working in restaurants, and it's been a revelation of pairing these things I have heard of - duck, sumac, creme fraiche - with the actual texture and taste. There's something incredibly magical to me about the language of food. The imagery of it. The brutal physicality of it. We make food beautiful because we love it. It feeds us, nourishes us - but I am also fascinated by the fact that food implies death. Everything that feeds us has once lived. We consume the bodies of others; we'll be consumed ourselves. There's something both sacred and profane about that, I think.
4. myth, religion, and monstrosity
It probably comes as no surprise to anyone who reads my shit that I grew up in an incredibly religious area, soaked to the bone with Calvinist damage. I went to a Christian Reformed church and cut my teeth on coloring books with Christ's body dying on the Cross. I doubt I will ever have a wholly comfortable relationship with religion and that comes through. I love to write characters struggling with religion and the claustrophobic, oppressive feeling of an unairconditioned church in the height of summer, hundreds of voices repeating the same things, singing the same songs. This is also why I'm fixated on monstrosity. It's about abjection, right? The abject other? You are alone in the middle of a sea, different from the others. You are queer. Uneasy. Separate. An infection the body is searching for and seeking to eliminate. I can't separate the two. One and other, holiness and monstrosity. I want to write about them and mix the imagery - a holy monster, a monstrous saint. I am a child standing at the fountain soda machine and pushing all the buttons. I love myth for that, because you're given imagery and a language to evoke this. Is a chimera evil? Medusa had her head cut off for a bad hair day, but was it her fault? I always come back to this quote from Ocean Vuong in On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous:
“What I really wanted to say was that a monster is not such a terrible thing to be. From the Latin root monstrum, a divine messenger of catastrophe, then adapted by the Old French to mean an animal of myriad origins: centaur, griffin, satyr. To be a monster is to be a hybrid signal, a lighthouse: both shelter and warning at once.”
5. desire, sexuality, and erotism
Okay, so this is it. This is REALLY IT, which is - I KNOW - back to the body again. When I fixate, I fixate. But I want to be more specific. I'm fascinated with how we are creatures of desire. We're born needing. We need to be fed, to be cared for, to be held. We are a bundle of wants and that never changes, only the shape of our desires change. How do we introduce ourselves? "Hi, I am so and so and when I grow up I want to be -" So many things are about our desire. We struggle with it so much, with the wanting and the inability to have. With our shame for wanting. We want to eat and feel guilt for it. We want to sleep in and feel ashamed. We want, we want, we want. It is endless and consuming. I love characters tormented by desire, twisting their shame into spiraling rituals around it. Have you ever read Hunger by Knut Hamsun? It changed me. This is a man who wants very simple things but who damns himself in his rejection of his want. I love that. I'm fascinated. Desire is so endlessly bewitching because I want to understand why we desire the things we do. I remember reading Crash by J.G. Ballard and coming away floored by this erotic desire that was so strange to me, so completely and wholly not my own, yet somehow familiar in the viscerality of it. In truth, I frequently reverse-engineer my original characters. I begin with a kink and one wholly incorrect fact that they adamantly believe and then build them from there. Beginning with the kink is so fun for me, because I want to then ask how did you get here, what is your relationship to this eroticism and why, how do you feel about it, how do you share it? Whether or not I ever include the sexual life of the character or the kink itself doesn't matter, but it tends to prompt a lot of thought about who the character is and why. If we are the sum of our desires, then I figure it helps to take a good, long look at them.

For me it’s morning, so I’m procrastinating doing my chores by sending asks 😁
5 - favorite form of potato?
30 - if you had one whole day without any of your usual responsibilities/chores/family obligations, what would you do?
Ahhh, timezones! I certainly hope the procrastination was well-loved.
5. Favorite form of potato?
Honestly, I love potatoes. I think it's easier to say that my least favorite is mashed potato, and even then I won't turn it away. I suppose my favorite is either french fries, or roasted all crispy with herbs and duckfat. Or tater tots, because I'm an overgrown child. (As we speak I am eating a potato has with green peppers, onions and mushrooms...I am a potato.)
30. if you had one whole day without any of your usual responsibilities/chores/family obligations, what would you do?
Oh man. That's hard! I don't remember what I used to do before all of that. Living here, I'd probably go to the beach and sit and read in the sand. It would be cold and windy and smell like fish, so I'd probably bring a blanket and some wine...read some Clive Barker or something? Watch the pelicans eat in the ocean and then fly over my head to the freshwater lake right behind my beach to wash the salt from their feathers before heading back out. They all live on this rock formation just off-shore, and they're so big that it looks like a bunch of Pteranodons flapping around the rock. And I'd probably eat something I can't eat at home, like cheese. Nice cheese. And, would I write? Probably. Without distraction and at a normal time of day? That sounds like fiction. Impossible.
What a good question!
Thank you for indulging me! Happy weekend my friend!
weirdly specific asks...

Jaron is cooking for his friends and the town. Right now, he is using a resturant to cook some food. So far, everything is going well. He is cooking something special. Broiled crawlfish, some lobster pie, mac n’ cheese with breadcrumbs, brisket, and some corn cobs, potatoes wedges that are fried in duckfat, fired okra and green peas. This is good. Plus, he is baking sweet bread inside the oven.
Right now, he already taste the food but he needs a second opinion. Right now, his friends are on missions right now.
So he needs a test taster. Lucky for him, someone came by through the door and Jaron smiles.
Tumblr media
“Hey there! Uh....sorry to bother ya! But can you taste my food?” He asked. “S-sorry!” He needs to check on the sweet bread. “Need help setting this up together.” He said as the food is sitting there on the table. “Need an opinion on them and need to know what I’m missing.”
