SyFy is airing Killjoys marathons on Fridays the month of July

Two things I appreciate about Killjoys:

1) Its kick-ass WOC lead 👩🏽‍🦱

2) How it stressed the importance of both platonic soulmate love (Dutch & Johnny) and romantic soulmate love (Dutch & D'avin) while never mixing up the tone of either of those love stories.

johnny’s never smoked anything when he and dutch get close, roughly age thirteen. his mom hasn’t smoked since she got with sid - sid probably wouldn’t allow it - but there’s something nostalgic about the smell of the smoke as dutch, sat beside johnny in the grass in the park, takes a long drag of his cigarette. they’ve just finished class at cobra kai and they’re in their matching gis, the pack’s between them by their thighs, and johnny stares at it, considering swiping his own smoke out of the pack.

instead, he looks at dutch and nods to the lit cigarette in his hand. “can i try?”

dutch looks back at him, eyes narrowed for a moment like he’s searching johnny’s face for something, a stream of smoke spilling over his lips as he blows out an exhale. johnny’s expecting a ‘you sure?’, but instead dutch holds the cigarette out between his fingers silently and johnny takes it carefully. dutch looks amused now, waiting.

johnny glares at him before he takes a drag, knowing damn well he won’t be able to do much in the face of dutch’s amusement in a second - and he can’t, when the smoke catches him right in the back of his throat the second he tries to draw it in and he chokes immediately, hacking and wheezing and doing his best not to drop the cig. over the racket he can hear dutch laughing, louder and more sincere than johnny’s heard before.

it’s almost nice. johnny’s eyes are wet and he can’t get enough air into his burning lungs, but then there’s a hand clapping him on the back - too hard, rough enough to rock him forwards and hurt - and that’s almost nice too.

“try again,” dutch tells him, when johnny’s got himself under control. he plucks the cigarette from johnny’s hand and holds it up for him, and johnny has to chase it like a kiss. he leans forward and takes another drag, more tentative this time, and dutch pulls the cig away fast. his other hand finds johnny’s back again, resting between his shoulder blades almost comforting, and though johnny coughs again he manages to keep most of the smoke in his lungs. he tries to exhale like dutch does, copying every time he’s watched, and dutch must notice because he grins.

“good,” he says, and johnny tries to ignore the way his burning chest lights up by instead shoving dutch roughly by the shoulder, sending him swaying hard to the side. dutch laughs again, takes his own quick drag on the cig as he rights himself, before he holds it up in front of johnny’s lips again.

“again,” he says firmly, kind of like sensei does when they’re training. so johnny leans in for another drag.

four or so years later, johnny’s sat in the same park age seventeen, smoking another cigarette. the pack’s his own this time - …actually he might’ve swiped this one from dutch, he can’t remember, but he is better at it now. it’s later than he was allowed out at age thirteen too, and on the other side of the little box in the grass is daniel larusso.

larusso’s gaze is heavy, watching johnny out of the corner of his big brown eyes, and johnny still feels kind of uncomfortable under it. they’re getting used to each other, maybe as close as dutch and johnny had been back then, and maybe that’s why johnny isn’t exactly surprised when larusso nods to the cigarette between johnny’s lips and asks, “can i…?”

johnny doesn’t know if larusso’s ever smoked before, but he’s looking at johnny with that anxious look that feels familiar. he takes another long drag of the cigarette and then draws it away, snuffs it out against the grass beside his thigh on the far side to daniel.

“nah,” he says. “it’s bad for you.”

he picks up the pack from between them too and shoves it into his jacket pocket, hidden away from where sid or his mom could see it. daniel watches him, gaze heavy again with something johnny doesn’t recognise, but he doesn’t protest. he knocks his shoulder gently against johnny’s.

“‘s’bad for you too,” he says quietly, and maybe he knows johnny won’t know how to respond to that because he springs to his feet then, hands in the pocket of his red hoodie. “you wanna go on the swings?”

johnny scoffs at him, hand crushing the already-crushed pack of smokes in his own jacket pocket as larusso gives him that stupid smile.

they go on the swings.

You've heard about Amanda x Johnny x Daniel, but what about Carmen x Johnny x Dutch? Hear me out.

Dutch gets out of prison and is in need of a place to crash. The remaining Cobras all offer their homes to him and he reluctantly accepts but tells them he'll only stay a week or two at each house because he doesn't want to impose on them. They all tell him 'nonsense, stay as long as you need to get back on your feet', but he's stubborn and, true to his word, never stays longer than 14 days.

It's Johnny's turn to take Dutch in and he's super excited about it, buying beer and junk food and asking Robby to help him set up HBO Maximum ("It's just HBO Max, dad.") because apparently Iron Eagle is on there in really good quality.

Understandably, Carmen is less excited and more cautious. She quietly worries about letting another criminal near Miguel and him maybe having a bad influence on Johnny. But she decides to wait and see before making any accusations.

The first thing she notices is how tactile Johnny and Dutch are with each other. It starts out with a big hug (not one of those bro-ey 'handshake and one-armed' hugs, although there is some light back slapping). After that, they seem to always be touching in some manner, almost like they're drawn to each other like magnets. Leaning against each other while they talk to her and her mother, play-wrestling on the floor, snugly pressing against the other on the couch even though there is enough space (each time she glances over she expects to see them cuddling while watching their movie).

It kind of baffles her that Johnny not only allows it but also initiates it. She hasn't seen him act like this before, except with her. Sometimes Dutch slings his arm around Johnny, almost protectively, and Johnny just beams at him. Other times Johnny leans against Dutch and hooks his head over his shoulder to see what he's doing (he cooks a lot, she figures it's his way to make up for his presence in their apartment).

The two of them seem so happy together, yet they manage to never make her feel excluded. Because Johnny still gives her equally bright smiles, and Dutch asks her mother to teach him all her favorite dishes so he can surprise her after a long day at work. He even helps Miguel with his homework (Johnny calls them both nerds but is unable to hide the fond look in his eyes).

She wonders if she's crazy, if they're nothing more than really good friends, if she's imagining the looks of adoration, the tension, between them.

Then, on the thirteenth evening of Dutch's stay (his bag is already packed and Johnny has been moody all day), the three of them end up on the couch together. Johnny's head is in her lap, turned towards the screen although his attention is probably focused on his socked feet, which are on Dutch's lap who is absently stroking and massaging them while staring at the action movie playing.

"Dutch," Carmen starts, and she can feel Johnny tense up. "Johnny and I... we want you to stay. Indefinitely. And we won't take no for an answer. Unless you're sick of us, of course." She adds that last bit with a teasing but careful smile.

She hasn't discussed this with Johnny beforehand, but she doesn't have to. And she finds herself wanting the same thing. This whole situation is unexpected, unorthodox and new, but these days she recognizes good things when they cross her path. She hopes her boldness will pay off and that Dutch won't be too stubborn to decline. Because if he says 'yes' they'll have all the time in the world to figure this all out. Together.

Sorry about that cliffhanger haha. I looove Dutch x Johnny and was thinking about it happening during Cobra Kai, and suddenly this ship came to me. Lemme know if you're feeling it too!
