merlin wing fic where merlin keeps his wings bound under his clothes (similar to chest binding) and of course he takes them off to sleep but they don’t get proper stretching often enough so every once in a while he goes into the forest at night to fly (more often when he’s been stressed)

arthur notices merlin’s been extra shifty recently so one night he follows him into the woods and sees merlin stop in the middle of a clearing (or maybe at the shore of avalon). he waits behind a tree to watch what merlin’s doing and who he might be meeting. only to see merlin discard his neckerchief and tunic, he sees the bandages and assumes merlin’s injured and gets up to confront merlin but before he’s made it out of his hiding spot, merlin’s dropped the bandages and stretched to his full wingspan, stands for a second to ruffle his feathers then shoots straight into the air.

merlin twists and turns, feeling better every second he spends in the sky

when merlin has slowed down to fly leisurely circles, he spots arthur (maybe he freezes, maybe he loses balance for a second and stumbles mid-air, maybe he flies out of sight for a moment to think)

he flies down to meet arthur (i imagine him landing kinda like kilgharrah, just hotter and more majestic) (like swooping down and righting himself at the last second and his wings kinda bouncing a little)

So I watched Cursed by Light for the first time yesterday (even though I started watching sds circa 2017, I'm just late to the game🤪) and I have so many thoughts !! Might do more analysis later, but here's my initial thoughts

I NEED more Meliodas and Zeldris interactions like it is a NECESSITY

Elizabeth was so badass in this movie I love her and it made me want to see "Bloody Ellie" even more omg

On the topic of Elizabeth, I love her bc she's such a girls' girl. Like, find her a woman, and they will be besties. I mean Merlin, Diane, Elaine, Gelda, even Derieri - she's just such a girl lover !!

And it's pride month so legally, everyone has to agree with bi!Elizabeth... jk... kinda lol (honestly every single sin is queer in my head, im prohecting my queer onto all nnt char)

Cursed by Light DEFINITELY best movie like hands down

BUT I actually kinda wish that the Supreme deity plotline was part of the show rather than a one off movie

Like I want it as a season. I feel like her character had so much potential not only for cool plots and battles, not only for the resurrection of the goddess race and the problems that would cause, but also for Elizabeth's emotional and physical/power arc

Anyway I will be thinking of at least a half season to combat the SD, complete with flashback to and before the Holy War and Elizabeth defeating her mother with those famed goddess powers that the demon race was so afraid of

And of course, within this season would be lots of brother bonding, and a large amount of time set in the demon realm where we get to explore the society and world, along more with the demon bros' past as individuals and together

Meliodas atones for both his betrayal of his brother, and that of his people who he probably should have been protecting

Plus maybe some gowther (bc I love him) and original demon lore bc that would be cool

1) Critical Role (can this be called a show? I mean obviously it’s my number 1 right now. Thanks for saving me from reality 💖)

2) Strictly Come Dancing (also don’t know if this counts but every year it gets me through the start of The Dark. Congrats Ellie and Vito! 💃)

3) Taskmaster (another show I’m not sure counts but it’s a go to pick me up. This last series was a fave!)

4) Buffy the Vampire Slayer (if I had a stake to my chest to name my favourite show ever then this would have to be it)

5) Merlin (an oldie but always a goodie, you can’t beat magic as a gay metaphor!)

6) Doctor Who (from 9 to 10, these were my childhood and will always bring me comfort)

7) Parks and Recreation (my favourite out and out comedy for a long time)

8) Malcolm in the Middle (how did I forget ???? This was my favourite childhood comedy and I’ve been rewatching STILL holds up)

9) Criminal Minds (Unexpected but I love the characters so much I shall have to have a rewatch soon)

10) Friends (I feel so Basic saying it but whenever I can't be bothered deciding what to watch it's always on and it is a comfort to know it's always there)

Three Ships--- cheeky answer: the RLS Legacy, the Dawn Treader, and Vingilot. Answer clearly intended by the question: Faramir/Eowyn, Cor/Aravis, and Bran/Mérian

First Ship---The Dawn Treader It’s a toss up between Pongo and Perdita in 101 Dalmatians, and Robin Hood and Maid Marian in any variation. What can I say? I started young. Robin and Marian have continued to be favorites however.

Last Song---I think it was Into the West from the RotK soundtrack (reminding me again that I actually prefer Peter Hollens’ versions especially the linked one with Taylor Davis)

Last Movie---Treasure Planet. I was well overdue for a rewatch. That story still holds up at every turn.

Currently Reading--- Lamplighter, by D. M. Cornish, Monk’s Hood by Ellis Peters, The Writer’s Guide to Writing Horses by Mackenzie Kincaid (checking for inaccuracies in parts I’ve written for Caliam’s Fury, which hopefully isn’t a lost cause, plus hoping for specific answers to one or two questions) and (last but not least) The Horse and his Boy by C. S. Lewis.

Currently Watching----y’all are going to get tired of my Merlin answer, but I still intend to get back into it I just haven’t made time lately. Certain people are tempting me to get into Once Upon a Time, but I really think I ought to finish Merlin first.

Last thing I wrote----I don’t really have much in the way of completed works (and by much I mean any at all unless my prompts count) so the last thing I’ve worked on is The Tiffany Problem. I’m so close to tying that all up though!

Currently Writing---uhh, see above, but my main WIP is called Erandir’s Reckoning (working title at least. Prologue is here for anyone interested) and its sequel which wasn’t a sequel at first (or else I wouldn’t have started it) is called Caliam’s Fury. No part of that one is posted because a few chapters into writing it I saw in one breathtaking instant how it connected so now it has Spoilers™

"Come for your potion?" Merlin teased when Gwen entered his work room.

"Don't forget I'm your Queen, Merlin." Gwen reminded him.

"Eh, what are you going to do? Burn me at the stake? I'm fire proof, Dragons don't burn." Merlin shrugged as he chopped some roots for the potion he was working on.

"Are you okay?" Gwen asked, Merlin wasn't usually so sarcastic, not to Gwen at least.

Merlin frowned as he looked into the bubbling potion, "No, not really."

There was a pause.

"Lancelot and I had a fight." Merlin admitted.

"You had a fight?" Gwen repeated, shocked, Merlin and Lancelot never fought.

Merlin nodded, going to sit on one of the cots he kept for patients or the childrens naps.

"What was it about?" Gwen asked as she sat next to him.

"That's just it, I don't know, or well, he was yelling about me hoarding his shirts but I don't think he's really angry about that." Merlin told her.

"Why not?" Gwen asked, usually if a person yelled about something they were angry about that thing, or at least that's how Arthur worked.

"Because Lancelot usually puts his stuff in my nest and when he's down to his last few outfits I take the nest to have the clothes washed and the cycle repeats." Merlin explained, "So, it's not that."

"Oh." Gwen frowned, thinking and then looked up when Theron began to cry.

Merlin sighed and got up to fetch the baby, tucking him close to fed him on his Magic.

Gwen looked at them and thought about how having Morgana had disrupted her and Arthur's schedule, how it had taken Elyan babysitting overnight for them to talk it out and make plans for Elyan to keep an eye on Morgana a few evenings so they could have time together.

"Merlin, how long has it been since you and Lancelot had time alone?" Gwen asked, "Time where you aren't sleeping?" Gwen interrupted when Merlin opened his mouth.

Merlin frowned, "I don't..., I think it must have been before Ellie and Effie. At least for quality together time where we weren't on our way to other tasks."

"Hmm, I thought so. I think Lancelot misses you and he doesn't know how to tell you without upsetting you." Gwen said softly as Merlin came to sit next to her, Theron in his arms.

"Right, that makes sense, but how can I fix it?" Merlin asked, looking at Theron, "Thero needs my Magic."

Gwen hummed, "Can you siffon off enough for a few days? That way Arthur and I could watch him, Morgana would love to practice having a brother, and Gwaine could watch Ellie and Effie, Leon would love having a sleepover with his favorite Dragonlings."

Merlin frowned, "Magic wants to be used, actively or not, if I siffon it off it'll just give itself a job. But perhaps... Cornelius Sigan put his soul in a gemstone, maybe..." Merlin trailed off as he handed Theron to Gwen and went digging through his books.

"Ah, here it is." Merlin cried some hours later.

Gwen looked up from where she'd been playing with Theron, shaking one of his noisy toys for him to grab at.

"What did you find?" Gwen asked as she lifted the boy up to her chest.

"A way for Lancelot and I to have a weekend away." Merlin grinned, "Well, at least if Arthur is willing to let me borrow twelve emeralds from the treasury."

"Twelve?" Gwen asked.

"Oh, it's just in case, Theron feeds twice a day and once at night, but sometims Ellie and Effie benefit from feeding on my Magic too." Merlin explained.

"Right, twelve, does size matter?" Gwen asked.

"Only with Sapphires but Emeralds are better for storeing Magic, Diamonds are the best conductors and Sapphires are best used for spell or curse work." Merlin said absently as he began preparing a space for placing his Magic in the stones.

"Alright, I'll get you the gems by tonight and make arrangements so you and Lancelot can be gone for the weekend." Gwen told him as she placed a now sleeping Theron in his basket.

Merlin looked up, "Thank you, Gwen, for helping me with this."

Gwen hugged Merlin, "You're my best friend, of course I want to help you. Besides it'll be good practice for when I finally do take that potion to have a baby of my own."

Merlin laughed, "You'll do fine, but Arthur could use the practice, I'm sure, if only so he realizes he'll do just fine."

Gwen smiled and kissed Merlin's cheek before leaving him to make the arrangements.

It would be good for Merlin and Lancelot to have time to themselves, and hopefully at a future date they'd return the favor.

Work is rough and my latest hobby is crochet, and I’m currently working on a hufflepuff sweater, so I’ve been hyperfocused on that. Enjoy!

4th November, Wednesday, 1993

After Defense Against the Dark Arts, Violet was convinced she was coming down with something. While she loathed Professor Lockhart, she'd never fallen asleep in class before. Whether he didn't notice or didn't care, she slept through the last hour of class, only waking when something soft hit the back of her head.

She jerked up, looking around wildly. Aimee and Hannah were on her right, neither of which noticed her frantic wake up. She looked to the floor to find the offending object, leaning over to pick up a wadded up parchment. 'Open me' was written on one edge.

She glanced around to see if she could figure out who threw it. She couldn't tell if she was surprised or not to find Draco staring at her expectantly. He dipped his head, glancing to the parchment. She rolled her eyes and turned back around, considering ignoring the boy. In the end, her curiosity won out, as was becoming habit with Draco.

She carefully unfolded the paper, flattening it on the table so she could read it.

She scoffed to herself, of course he has perfect handwriting.

She had to reread the question several times before she could comprehend what he'd asked. Finally she turned to look at him again, but he was busy talking to one of his Slytherin mates. She waded up the parchment again, contemplating what to do with it. Part of her wanted to use incendio, to watch his expression as the parchment turned to ash, while the other part of her wanted to find out why he was asking. Surely he didn't care what grade she'd gotten? So, what, was it a prank? A trick?

The bells chimed to mark the end of class before she could make a decision. The bells startled her out of her thoughts, causing her to knock her bag off her chair and the contents spilling out.

She huffed a sigh before looking at her friends, who were already packed up and waiting, "Go on ahead, I'll catch up."

"You sure?" Aimee asked, her expression concerned.

"Yeah, see you at dinner."

The entire class had cleared out by the time she'd picked up her fallen books and parchment; all except one student.

"You didn't answer my question."

"Bloody hell!" She shouted at the blond boy, standing up so quickly she bumped her hip into the corner of the table, "What is wrong with you?!"

"Me?" He hissed, "I should be asking you that."

Violet glared at Draco, reaching out for the ball of parchment before shoving it into his chest. She spun on her heel and left the room, but she barely made it out the door before he'd caught up to her, walking by her side.

"Ellis, I need to know how you did on that quiz."

"Merlin's beard, Malfoy!" She groaned, reaching a hand up to rub at her forehead, her exhaustion spreading into a headache, "I got fourteen questions right, alright? Happy now?"

"What one did you get wrong?" His tone was bored, but something about the way he kept glancing to Violet made her wonder if he was worried about something. Maybe being seen with her?

"If I tell you, will you leave me alone?" When he didn't answer, she looked over at him, studying his blank expression, "What planet has the most moons."

"It's Saturn." He responded.

Violet stopped walking and turned to Draco, "I'll ask again, what do you want?"

Several expressions passed over his face quickly, the most prominent being reluctance and anger.

"I..." He swallowed several times, his eyes darting around, but it was only when his already pale skin paled further that Violet realized he was anxious. His next words were rushed, spoken nearly as one, "I need a tutor in Astronomy."

Violet blinked once, then again, and again, staring at the boy as if he'd grown a second head.

"Is this a prank?" She started looking around, "If so, it's not funny-"

"It's not a prank!" He huffed, regaining Violet's full attention, "I failed the quiz. Professor Sinister said if I don't pass the next one, I'll fail the class."

"It's Sinistra," She corrected, but he only rolled his eyes, "Why would you ask me? Can't any of your Slytherin mates help you? Or, better yet, have mommy and daddy pay for a tutor, because I won't do it."

"Is it about money?" He asked, brow furrowed, "I'll pay you if I must. But my parents cannot know."

"Oh, 'cause you'll be in trouble?" She mocked, "I still won't do it. Why ask me? You hate me!"

He didn't deny her words, but the vulnerability he was showing her was anything but hatred. He didn't like her by any means, and she didn't like him, but he knew he was running out of options.

"My mates don't know, and I'd prefer to keep it that way." He explained, though he was quickly becoming agitated, "I asked you because I thought you... Never mind!"

He started to stomp off, but Violet reacted on instinct, reaching out to grab his arm.

Draco froze, barely breathing, as she said, "Don't be daft. If it's that serious, I'll help."

Violet was ready to burst when she finally sat down to dinner. She wanted so badly to tell her friends what had happened, to tell someone that the Draco Malfoy asked for tutoring, from a Hufflepuff no less! But when she finally sat at the table, she couldn't tell them.

She wasn't sure why. She thought it over for some time before she came to the conclusion that, by telling others, she would likely be humiliating the boy. Everyone knew that Draco Malfoy didn't ask for help, and that he would never rely on someone else willingly. Besides, he'd said he didn't want his friends knowing, and if Violet told her friends, the entire school would know by Friday. News like that would travel fast.

So Violet decided not to tell her friends about her run-in with Draco, or that she'd now be spending time with him, alone, every Friday. And for Astronomy, a subject she hates!

Yes, her friends would certainly be upset when they inevitably found out Violet was keeping such a big secret from them, but for now, she was okay keeping them in the dark for just a little while.

With adjustments to the plot + character arcs and how events play out (like for example Lucas would fall in love w Max still not El but also elmax as morgwen possibilities), it fits them all so WELL especially Mike and Will as Arthur and Merlin. Even their families fit: Will growing up with a single mom in poverty who loves him, Mike growing up in wealth with a shitty asf dad that makes horrible decisions but Mike would be a much better leader than him-

okay okay okay hi elli. i have thoughts on this, and it's been a while since i've thought about those thoughts but here i am today. to share with you my thoughts. some of them get a little funky weird controversial, so bear with me. (also. i say read all of this with caution if you're still watching merlin, bc i'm gonna try to not spoil too much of it, but i will be hitting on major character arcs that build throughout the show!)

the easy ones. will's merlin. mike's arthur. duh. easy peasy. all the parallels you just mentioned? perfect. literally byler as merthur works so well, and i just know modern byler would've loved this show. like mike starts watching it and gets so excited??? anyways.

i also think lucas is actually more of a mix of lancelot/gwaine, and dustin would be leon (though depending on where you are in the series, you might not have gotten to the point where leon is a more central character?). anyways, i think lucas is a mix of lancelot/gwaine because he has the same moral righteous and kindness of lancelot, but is definitely more brash like gwaine (love my boy planning to storm fucking hnl by himself lol). with dustin, leon's a very level-headed character, also arthur's second in command for later seasons with the knights, and so i think it fits with how mike and dustin are both the planners and dustin sorta steps up to help lead in mike's absence in s4!

now for the girls. so, i've gone back and forth on this, because for obvious reasons, the el/gwen parallel works because of the merlin/arthur/gwen and will/mike/el love triangle. like that's the most obvious interpretation of this. but then, as i was thinking about it (and honestly i was wandering down this rabbit hole while writing my merlin byler fic lmao), i was trying to think about where el having powers and just willel in general would fit into all of this?

so i started thinking about el/morgana, which then would um. make max/gwen. (i'll come back to that in a second, let me explain el/morgana first.) i'm just thinking about how morgana is one of the most powerful sorcerers we see in the show and how morgana and merlin are foils to each other. i think there's an episode that calls morgana the darkness to merlin's light. so like yes, merlin and arthur are two sides of the same coin and have their shared destiny, but likewise, morgana has always been that third part of their destiny (which is so fun once you explore the ancient religions and stuff this show loosely pulls inspiration from, because three is kind of a big number) in that she is connected to merlin.

so you think about willelmike, right? and obviously, el is our hero and protagonist of the show, so she's not gonna end up turning bad unlike morgana. but in the context of thinking about a merlin x st crossover, how interesting would it be if el did turn evil? because in st, we see this is a back and forth conversation el has with herself - is she the monster? is she good? or is she bad?

and i think about an el who actually did go with henry when prompted to in the lab. an el whose moral code would be shaped and manipulated by someone with an ulterior motive, someone who recognizes her power. because that, in my opinion, is what happened to morgana with morgause. morgana was terrified and alone because she had this secret which could get her killed, and morgause was the first to show that her magic could be good. so she trusted morgause and went spiraling down a path that led her to destruction because of how morgause manipulated her into thinking. i don't think morgana was ever inherently evil. i think the fear and manipulation motivated her and morphed into anger and a desire for revenge, because this poor woman was alone for so much of her story.

so, when i'm imagining a merlin x st au, i am imagining henry would take that morgause role. if we're following merlin canon, will and el never learn about each other's magic and spend their character arcs alone and motivated by fear, when they really could've found solace and love and acceptance in each other. if we're not following merlin canon, will decides not to be an idiot? and he tells el about his magic? and they become magic twins together, and look, el grew up as mike's sister essentially, so then will's basically her brother in law.

(also. the platonic elmike sibling vibes crack me up. like all the canon st jokes about how they're so family coded? that right there. merlin vibes. they're family. no dating your sister.)

anyways, so that then defaults us to having max as gwen, which i think would change her character a little bit. maybe instead of a romance between max and mike, it's more that sort of friendship that gwen and arthur do develop, because max challenges mike to be better and brings out the good parts of him - the parts that care about justice and about his people and about doing the right thing. and so mike, kind of feeling forced into having a queen because ya know. laws of the land and stuff, very tentatively asks max if she would ever consider stepping into that role because he believes she would be an excellent leader. and so that's when the engagement happens and stuff and it's for show for the people, and only like. will and max and mike and dustin know that obviously. and then through whatever circumstances, the engagement ends up called off, and unlike in merlin canon, it doesn't end up happening again, and max just becomes an advisor to mike, who remains single as a king until. ya know. magic is legalized and he marries will (not following canon lol. or he dies. and i cry again.

especially in Naruto I think the bonds and relationships between the characters are SO well done, and I find it to be one of the strongest points of the series. I think that that is probably one of the main reasons so many of us find this story to be so compelling

re: which college I went to - I’ll refrain from naming the exact one, just because I try not to put info that would narrow down my offline identity too closely on a public blog, heh, but I did my bachelors and masters degrees at schools in the Northeast USA.  I do agree with you that the English courses in your area sound a little different than the ones here - often “English” as a college course of study here refers to English literature, as opposed to English language, so you wouldn’t see the phonetics and pronunciation work you mentioned.  You will still probably have the occasional text or class that just doesn’t spark any interest in you; there’s always bound to be something out there we don’t connect with, even if the work might still have some kind of literary merit.  I remember I took one course during my degree (I think it was on post-modernist American Lit and related texts, or something like that) and I hated it.  We were doing Hunter Thompson, Brett Easton Ellis, Tom Wolfe, etc, and I just despised everything we read.  That’s rare for me; I can usually find something to appreciate in most of the “school” books I’ve worked with, but I remember reading I Am Charlotte Simmons and Less Than Zero and wanting to just dump them in a lake. 

What are some of your favourite books and series? :) I scrolled through your archive for a bit and I think I’ll be adding Merlin to my list of things to watch.

Oh, I love Merlin SOOOOO much!  One of my absolute favorite universes of all time (and one of my favorite fandoms, too - I met so many awesome people there!)  I can’t believe it took me so long to start watching it (but then again, I’ve always been really slow about picking up TV shows X) ).  Probably my other biggest past fandoms (besides Merlin and Naruto) have been Teen Wolf and Star Wars, though there are a number of other series/universes that I love but don’t post as much about (Lord of the Rings, DC Comics, House MD, Star Trek, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gilmore Girls, etc).  As far as books go, it’s hard to choose - a couple of my favorites are Crusader by Edward Bloor, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, as well as the Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce and the Animorphs series (childhood favorite) by K. A. Applegate.

Do you happen to work in the teaching field by the way? (It’s something I’ve thought about doing myself.)

I used to, yes!  My masters degree is in education, and I used to be a public school teacher.  Nowadays I work in children’s services at a public library, though.  (I loved many parts of teaching, and the school I worked at was wonderful, but work-life balance became really difficult after a few years, so switching to a less intense work environment ended up being the right decision for me.

I find it helpful to kind of compare it to singing. 

Ooh, yes, this is exactly why I think tonal languages are so cool!!!  I have a music background, so I just think it’s so amazing to have languages that utilize pitch changes like that.  (And it’s SUPER cool that you’re able to pick certain words up in the original Naruto dialogue due to occasional similarities between the languages - there are some shared words like that between Arabic and Spanish, too, which it was always fun to see students pick up on!)
