JOMP BPC - December 18th - Warm and Cozy
feat. The Kingdom of Sweets by Erika Johansen, which will probably be my last book purchase of 2023. can't wait to cozy up with it over Christmas and see what a dark retelling of The Nutcracker looks like

This is a haunting and chilling take on the beautiful ballet The Nutcracker. The sumptuous style of writing used in this story details every creepy piece of this world and its characters. It's a very strange take on the classic, but I couldn't resist this delight.
At times, the story seemed to jump from place to place rather quickly, but it retained the same sinister vibe throughout which held this world together. This is definitely an interesting read!
Out November 28, 2023!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

I'm waiting for it to get warm enough that I can sit outside and read. I hope that in three weeks or so it will get warmer than it is now.
Have you read The Queen of the Tearling? I read it a long time ago but for some reason I never continued the series.

Just finished reading The Kingdom of Sweets by Erika Johansen- Much wilder and darker than expected! It was Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Berlinker Philharmoniker, specifically at 1:57 onwards PERSONIFIED. The prose reminds me of I, Coriander by Sally Gardner, but this is of course far more adult and chilling. There were moments where I felt almost creeped out all alone in my room this night. Top 2 nutcracker retellings and I feel scared to turn off my bedside lamp now :”)

oh yes i finished the kingdom of sweets. its an interesting take on the nutcracker story and definitely takes a lot of liberties and gives more of a horror vibe. really fun read for the most part up until the epilogue which felt like the author shoehorned 15 historical events and figures into 15 pages because they could. the final chapter was still really nice though and i think tied everything together nicely, but the pacing of the rest of the epilogue was bad enough to drag my rating down to 3.5 stars

The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling #1) by Erika Johansen
I really liked this one! A friend of a friend had recommended it to me in probably 2014 (I have a long TBR, what can I say!) This book gave me the feeling I used to get when I was first reading fantasy, and everything was new and exciting. I loved the characters, the plot was solid, the setting was…confusing (for a purist fantasy reader, that is, but I'll say no more lest it be construed as a spoiler). At any rate, I'm excited to read the next two books in the series, and can heartily recommend this to friends who love fantasy!

I just finished The Fate of The Tearling and now I don't know what to do with my life.
Like.
What?
How?
I have so many questions! My mind is about to explode! I can't decide if I love this ending, if I hate it or both!

Just finished my third read of 2024!
The Kingdom of Sweets is a retelling of The Nutcracker, but most importantly its a book that isn't afraid to face the hard truths of forgiveness and acceptance, be it of the behavior of others or even of ourselves.
I really liked a lot of the imagery involved when talking about the character of The Sugar Plum Faerie and the kingdoms she had crafted. Natasha, our main character, resonated with me as a character because I think everyone has felt the way she felt about her lot in life at one point or another!
