second of all: this was my response that's long enough that I look insane in my YouTube comments but it's just normal for me here lol

The small moments of humanization for Eggman in previous games were so much lighter and more in character because they didn't try to apply things that were impossible for the type of character he is to feel or change to do so reasonably. So it feels jarring and forced in this game for them to suddenly play it up so much. This kind of stuff doesn't work for every kind of villain that exists and some of them should just be allowed to be evil, expected to be what they were created to be without wanting to change every single thing about them and make them into a different person, taking away all the things that are appealing about them as evil characters. Evil can be fun and entertaining and characters don't always need a good side.

You can believe we need more villains that are humanized to the point they're redeemed and aren't so bad and stuff but... I have absolutely no idea how people are thinking that this works for Eggman, I can't fathom it. The whole point is that he's a deeply selfish self centered egotist, which is exactly why he wants to take over the world. He shouldn't be expected to be able to care for others because his core important character trait is literally against the entire idea and that's why they didn't show that before now. They really tried to disregard the defining traits of his entire being to try to make this happen and I don't think this is a good thing.

Also we definitely shouldn't want to become Eggman and he's not the type of guy we should redeem. The guy that carelessly harms animals and the environment, manipulates and gaslights people into getting what he wants, is carless towards innocent people getting hurt and sometimes even tries to target them intentionally like when he tried to blow up Station Square in Adventure, tries to kill Sonic and friends who are children sometimes as young as 8 and saying it will be "[his] pleasure" to do so, enslaves other beings to force them to work for him and keeps them there by causing them pain and fear, mistreats his creations and other robots severely by yelling insults and hitting/destroying them, has no remorse or empathy for all the people he hurts in any way, terrorizes the world to try to get what he wants- a world where he rules and forces people to worship him with no sense of self and freedom ever again. I can go on and on. There are some characters that have gone so far that you cannot convince me that after all this time and all they've done, they'd very abruptly change in heart like that.

Eggman isn't a flat or boring villain just because he didn't have a good soft side and empathy and he doesn't need to be given one. Eggman isn't someone they should use for us to try to be inspired by and want to become, not every villain needs to be to be great characters. He's a monster but he can be funny and he does have feelings and passions but just not ones that involve caring for others. Humanizing a villain, fleshing them out, and making them feel real can be done without suddenly implying that this character can suddenly change in 5 mins after 30+ years. It's very poorly done and I can't understand how the English version's lazy cheap attempt at forcing a dynamic to try and get emotions out of people is actually working. But then I remember it's because people don't actually like real villains and want all of them to change. Sigh...

I'm so glad that this was toned down severely in Japanese and presented in a way that feels so much more like him and actually adds up with his behavior and actions in other games and actually considers and respects them, instead of forcing a huge drastic change of entire character at the end like they did in English.

Sonic due of the events in the Metal Virus Arc (and his traumas thanks to Infinite in Forces) turns his back againts his friends and joins the evil side, but after all he’s done to Eggman and his Empire, how does Eggman gonna truly believe him? well he gives him his second most hated enemy; Tails. 

I imagine the scene like this: Tails wakes up in the middle of a Morbian- sized test tube with no idea of where he is or how he end there but with Sonic in front on him, he asks him what happend and if he’s alright but Sonic only awnsers with one word “Hypocrite”. 

Wh-what Sonic? - He asked.  That you’re a hypocrite a liar just like the others.- Sonic awnsers.  Tell me did you really cared about me? When I was in war? - Sonic.  O-Of course I did! - Tails Then why did you leave me? Why did you never found me? Why did you and the others forget about me? It looks like I was his last resort when they free me from the Death Egg.- Sonic  Tails stays in shock and then apologizes, for everything, for leaving him alone while he was fighting Infinite, during the prision, that he leave the resistance because they stop searching for him, that he always try to find him back there and that he was sorry that he never had the chance to say it. Sonic stays silent while all of this and then says.  I forgive you Tails, in reality that’s the reason I bring you here. - Sonic ..... Hold on .. Bring me?- Tails

Yeah you know while I was ... back with Infinite, he show me a lot of things with the.... Phamtom Ruby, mostly nightmares, lies, of you and the others hating me.... Blaming me, I always thought they were lies back there... But you know ... With Mr Tinker, Starline, the Metal Virus I found out he wasn’t showing me lies at all .... he was showimg me the truth... About  Everyone, Espio, Silver, Knuckles... Shadow... So I choose ¿Why keep doing good things if they’ll always took the blame on me? You know, the only one that give me a short of ... Confort back then... Was Eggman and... I decided it brother... I won’t be the good guy anymore... I’m going to make Karma for them... for everyone... But don’t worry!! I promise I’ll keep you safe right? so that’s why you’re were! Eggman was kind enough to give me one of his ... Test tubes and while you’re inside there you’ll be alright! Save and Sound! - he says with a smile on his face. 

Tails... Tails is paralized and he begs, begs his brother to not do it, that is has to be another way, that nobody mean it seriously, that if he lets him go the others could explain it, but he only awnsers. 

To late little brother... six months late, but don’t worry we will always be together, just as promised. - And Sonic pushes a buttom that slowly fills the tube with a green liquid that when it covers him, send Tails uncousous.

older sonic & tails hcs. i think in general they keep their values and interests and in a lot of ways stay similar to their childhood/teen selves. but they mature in slightly different ways.

11 & 18: the ‘only kind of maturing’ era

already written a bit with my one fic

tails:

hes just starting puberty and is extremely messy, in both actual cleanliness and personality. still very fixated on advancing his tech and helping his friends, but now gets more frustrated at his limitations than before, recognizes he’s still a kid and is annoyed because he feels so close to being an adult even though he’s a long way off. prone to massive disorganization, only remembers details that relate to machines and tech and his friends’ needs. his friends start realizing that if they’re gonna hang out they gotta do it at the workshop, or invite him on a mission. hes trying to stop being a kid, but he does still have some ‘childish’ (re: fun. he’s allowed to have fun) interests like building things, logic puzzles and toys (‘they keep my spatial reasoning sharp!!!’ ‘ok buddy’), video games, various types of boarding, comics, collecting figurines etc. he’s less insecure in his tech designs, so much as he’s anxious about the consequences of anything failing. he knows his friends rely on his designs and he can’t let them down. he still likes going on missions/adventures, and will always go if asked. but he gets really stressed about not building enough if hes away from his workshop too long. he’s also a little more manipulative and less shy about using it. he’s a little shit when he wants to be. he knows everyone’s weaknesses he just needs to come at it from the right angle. his biggest weakness was always that he was a lil kid… now he realizes he’s gonna be way OP as he grows up. but if he does have one weakness it’s stretching himself too thin, trying things he’s not automatically good at, and traumatic responses. true creative thinking is also harder the older he gets, because he focuses so much on logic and designs and contingency plans that by design are about reacting to threats, not proactive. talking about feelings is also harder and harder. and his impulse control also gets worse. he gets twitchy if he isn’t busy. also — he tried taking on all the paperwork stuff about bills and taxes and parents at like, 8. but now he regrets it because he’s constantly forgetting. ultimately amy (now 15) starts helping him out.

sonic:

still a globetrotting hero. stir crazy if he’s not literally in the middle of an adventure, …but blended with the feeling that he’s done it all before. 100% going to get himself seriously injured around this age, and probably more than once. not quite ready to grow up as he didn’t really have a childhood. in a way, he lives a little of that through tails, trying his best to make sure tails stays more innocent and can be carefree for longer than he could. painfully aware that tails is now as old as sonic was when he adopted him. very aware of mistakes. keeps inviting tails on adventures though, because he knows it means everything to him to be included. also doesn’t fully get how much pressure tails feels about his designs, as he was always under the impression that tails builds things just because he loves it — like sonic is with running / racing. sonic continues to form rivalries … i think he might get mixed up in some more dangerous ones, and maybe start having some more serious relationships (?) but never quite commit to any of them as he’s not sure if that’s a good idea with how dangerous his life is. truthfully he didn’t really expect to make it this far, and can’t anticipate going all that much further, so he’s just winging it every day. he probably has some brand deals going that easily support his life style. it’ll 100% get manipulated by eggman though. (sonic happy meal toys attacking everyone like that kim possible movie…). he also still can’t talk about feelings. starts getting legitimately angry when people try to force it, but is overall still a very laidback guy. i think it might also be time for a new deep-seated phobia as he’s kind of OP. probably claustrophobia after forces… (and likely a few similar brief captivities afterward).

14 and 21: the angst era

tails:

similar to 11, but now with a lot more maturity and a little more calculated recklessness and manipulation. way more cautious about missions. he and sonic start butting heads about that; he’s old enough now, and probably sees things at this age that he couldn’t be shielded from. and with him being older and more assertive, it makes him a lot more unwilling to sacrifice others’ safety if there’s another way. starts building a LOT of contingency plans. even messier than before. like… he holds toxic waste in his lab for safe keeping. disaster teen. he’s also taller & stronger than sonic by a good amount and uses it to his advantage on missions. …and he has a villain arc, but low key. he trusts his friends with everything but their own safety and he creates a device that can perfectly protect them… by limiting their agency to fight/dive headfirst into danger. but there’s a hopeful ending to the angst. he finally starts getting some extra support and will only go up from here, for the most part. also might (?) have romantic interest but can’t find it in him to prioritize it.

sonic:

almost dying a lot lately. his friends are … worried. like. very worried. he’s finding limits that didn’t exist at 15, and has probably collected enough injuries that he’s getting frustrated about boundaries that didn’t exist before. might have a relationship that goes badly that puts him even further off of even mild romance. he’s kind of a mess at this age imo. everything blurs by to him and thrill seeking gets lethal. he is aware that he’s a mess, yet isn’t aware that total aversion to feelings might be … perhaps … be a bad thing. it’ll probably be a mission that uses emotions / etc against him that finally wakes him up. it’s all very messy. might start distancing himself from old friends, probably goes on more solo adventures and on various self discovery quests. needs a vacation. won’t take one. needs therapy, definitely will not be going. burned out era, low key; makes fewer new friends and old rivalries get nastier in many ways. he’s never an asshole, still good natured, but thoughtlessness/recklessness is driving his friends up the fucking wall. he’s absolutely the driving force of tails’s villain arc, and they fight / are on opposite sides in that adventure before coming back together. their bond survives and tails gets what he needs but sonic still needs some time to figure things out.

18 and 25: ‘almost real adults’ era

tails:

he’s balanced out from his teen years … by a lot. he finally has a system to keep things in order life-wise, even if his lab and house are still usually a wreck. still not amazing at talking about feelings but cares about it enough to make an effort… mostly. worries openly about his big brother and is allowed to. has a very successful business. attends ted talks a lot. has an anti bullying charity and helps kids get into STEM. might low key be thinking of adopting a kid someday but also knows he’s way too distracted with tech right now to make it work. not that interested in romance but knows he has time, not all that bothered. loves making designs. finds true creativity again. self assured in what he builds, and confident that his friends will be okay. will still have ups and downs but generally knows things are going to be okay.

sonic:

significantly less of a disaster than he was at 21. there is 100% a solo mission that he went on that changes his perspective at like, 22, and he comes back feeling more like himself, and starts to mellow back out. might be gone a whole year before he comes back but he’s doing better afterwards… chillin again. by 25 he fully has his shit together again, or as together as it’s going to be. after all, he’s still a whirlwind hero and it’s not like he’s ever going to be like, filing taxes or starting a family. but he’s got that steady confidence and a little more patience, and a greater willingness to share the load. finds that zest for life we all love him for. there IS STILL joy to be had by jumping into the active volcano and there is ALSO joy in wearing a protective lava shield courteous of his fox friend just in case.

You know now that you mention it from your last post how did all three eggs react to the first time they were having a hard time squeezing through a doorway

Modern was the most surprised and in disbelief when he first stepped through a door to find himself coming to an abrupt halt, feeling the pudgy sides of his big belly get squished between the frame. He was visibly flustered and frustrated as he tried his hardest to push through quickly and on the inside he was panicking over how humiliating it was. The judgement he was surely getting from anyone around that saw his struggling had him blushing like mad.

He frantically wriggled and his robots had to give a quick shove to finally get him through because once his belly was through, his fat ass was still stuck, as if it couldn't get any more embarrassing heheheh. He was at a loss for words because there wasn't an excuse for it, unlike most other situations his weight gets him into. Everyone knows very well that he could fit through it just fine before and it can't get smaller, so he's only gotten bigger.

His robots took the opportunity to tease and bring up how it looks like he needs to lose some weight because he can get mad at them but he can't argue with the fact that he's getting too big for the door. He gets very touchy because that was obvious, they didn't need to rub it in! It's one of those moments where it really hits him, he was oblivious towards just how fat he'd been getting before but then he could no longer be blissfully unaware.

He never thought he'd get big enough to struggle to squeeze through a door as wide as the one he got stuck in, it's what he's always tried to avoid by setting a limit and working to lose too much excess weight but it clearly hasn't been going to plan much at all as of late. He feels like a total fatass and everyone can see, if any of them tease him, express amusement, or bring even more attention to it then he feels a little ashamed.

Every time it's happened since has been a moment of panic and embarrassment, usually expressed through grumpiness and frustration but occasionally nervous laughter when he has to admit he needs a little help. When people judge or find it funny, it makes him want to rush out there as soon as possible and hope people will forget but sometimes he can't until he does some comfort eating after to help him feel better.

But when he gets older, gains more weight far past his limit and keeps it when he stops trying to work to lose it and really lets himself go, this will become his constant reality with no going back. So he'll have to get used to it, get better at pushing through by himself, and realize that it just makes him even hotter 💜

Of course with Casino Eggman being the big pervert he is, he was delighted when he first got stuck in one of his casino's doors that were supposed to be made to be big enough for him. He couldn't believe it when his thick squishy love handles and big round butt finally got him stuck. He felt so huge and wide and he loved the looks of surprise, judgement, and amusement on people's faces, how much attention he was drawing with his big fat body more than ever.

The first time for everything in the process of getting huge gives him a rush of pleasure. He was so giddy with glee for reaching this milestone in his weight gain goals that he giggled and blushed as he asked for help, without no attempt of being discreet because he wanted people to see how pathetic it was, that he needed someone to help squeeze his fat ass through the door. He had to step aside for a moment to try to hide his intense throbbing boner after.

He'd imagined getting this fat for a while, he'd have wet dreams and fantasies he'd share with his boyfriends during dirty talk, saying he'd love to get so fat he can hardly fit through his big doors but he didn't think it would really happen. He's so proud and elated and it just gives him motivation to get even bigger. He also praises his bfs for helping but they say it wouldn't have been possible if he wasn't such a greedy fatass and he was asking for it. He's very happy about it!

He carries all that weight with pride and wants to show it off, it's his favorite part when he's panting for breath after walking too quickly to his casino or office, walks through a big door and gets stuck. He blushes and acts surprised but in a much more excited way than modern. Even better if he then sits in a chair in there that struggles to hold his weight and gets stuck, so anyone around him can see how being so fat gives him constant trouble that he's all too happy about.

The humiliation brings him way too much gratification every time, especially when he gets to see people's honest reactions with their shock and concern, teasing and amusement. He later rewards himself with a big meal and lots of treats to make sure he keeps it up and only gains more. Knowing his getting fatter, heavier, and wider only works up his appetite even more as he wants his fat to keep bringing him that addictive pleasure! 💕

For Shahryar, it happened when he hadn't left the palace for a while and finally went down to the village for a visit. People were already surprised by how much bigger he was looking since the last time they saw him and of course even more so when he tried to waddle through a door and got stuck. It takes multiple of his strongest men to force him through because he's so heavy and hard to push and his big fat belly and ass and his thick squishy rolls of fat that spill everywhere lodged him firmly between the doorway.

He's confused and frustrated by it because he's the most shockingly oblivious towards how huge he is and even this doesn't make him finally realize. He doesn't understand how the door seems to have gotten smaller but he's convinced that it has. His palace is wide and spacious with huge doors that he'll never be too big for, so he never has this problem there and he blames the people in the village for making the door too small because he never has this problem with the doors at his palace.

He was very angry about it causing such embarrassment and the moment of brief panic of if he's trapped for good, his chubby cheeks were blushing madly. He had his usual spoiled royalty attitude as he said they should've made it bigger, as if it's their fault when really he really needs to lose weight but they wouldn't dare say it. Getting too worked up makes him overheat easily and he was huffing for breath after his rant winded him. They calmed him effectively with a drink and something to eat.

He eventually has to get used to it as he only gets bigger. It eventually becomes impossible for him to enter some of the doors of the smaller buildings in the village entirely, so his men have to go inside to get whatever he wants for him. Everyone is appalled by that, the way he can hardly sit anywhere without his ass being too wide or him being too heavy for the seat, how he can hardly walk on his own, and the way his men struggle to carry and help move him around.

But as usual, they fear what will happen if they let their amusement, judgement, or concern show no matter how they try to word it, so they don't dare. They just have to watch him continue to embarrassingly squeeze through doorways and get way too fat for some as he becomes so massively obese. He stops complaining eventually as he gets to used to it, as he does with everything that comes with his weight as it's never going away when he's totally consumed by his sloth and gluttony 💖

Scorpio, we gathered once we stopped laughing about it (briefly. Very briefly. To be honest we're still laughing), is Vector's evil twin who lives in a parallel universe and is played by Tom Hardy. Just so that all the people reading this post can be on the same page as us.

Ask me my top 5 anything

So...Chaotix time, uh? Let's see.

1) Zombot Arc (IDW comics)

An easy guess, if you know me at all. Watching these poor sods lose Charmy to a virus, find him for the briefest time and then get torn apart again, only for Espio to have to fight his zombified family until the very end...It was a blow to the stomach after the other, and yet it really gave the reader a sense of how tied they are to each other. Espio especially got a focus that he isn't often on the receiving end of, which was very nice to see.

And now, for the panel that irreversibly broke me:

2) The case of the Pirate Princess (Sonic Universe)

Genre-mashing at its finest. Three detectives (who are also idiots) are tasked with rescuing a princess (who technically doesn't want to be rescued) from a bunch of pirates (who are actually better at this found family thing than most) and accidentally find a lost treasure in the process. The treasure, by the way, isn't worth squat. And they don't even get paid well. But hey, at least they made new friends!

I dunno, this arc is just so very sweet. They bicker all the fucking time, but in a very peculiar, believable way that most siblings will know at first glance. Plus, they let Charmy be an actual kid in this, and you KNOW I'm a kidfic fan first and a human being second. He asks Espio for spelling help! He makes friends with everyone! He wants reassurances from Vector that he can still be a detective! The entire story ends with them using what little money they got to buy him something! I love them so much!!!!!!

In short: perfect dumbasses, all of them.

3) Hedgehog Hunt (Sonic X)

They're running a cafe in space. Child labor laws apparently don't exist there so Charmy is involved too. Espio refuses service to Doctor Eggman in multiple annoying ways. Vector plays the piano and becomes oddly reminiscent of Morgan when he was playing for Achille Lauro, and THEN goes to buy spaceship parts in a space mall because Sonic and friends are going incognito.

I don't know, man, I don't have an explanation for any of this. It's amazing to see, though.

4) Galactic Gumshoes (Sonic X)

You know when you are assigned a task, set out to complete that task, mix it up with something else and end up completely unrelated shit? This is exactly what happens to them in this episode. They're sent to deliver some clothes and while they're at it they try to kidnap two children. As one does.

It's just so quintessentially them, though. Charmy literally mocks Vector while the guy (who is, lest we forget, his boss and father figure) gets beaten ON HIS OWN SHIP! Espio is so done with everything and the narrative always forgets him! Sonic X was wild, guys, I'm so glad I rewatched it in quarantine.

5) Penders era Archie comics as a whole

Listen. These comics weren't good. In fact, they were ugly as sin and with awful storylines. But they were so atrocious that they accidentally become comedy gold, and I can't NOT mention them.

Charmy was a teenage prince with a betrothed, and his friend overdosed on Lemon Sundrop Dandelion (yes, you're reading the beginning letters correctly). Vector was a misogynist. Espio in the future had a Littlefinger goatee and two daughters whose only purpose was to snog the local bad boy. They don't actually do anything useful beside harassing Knuckles' girlfriend and occasionally eating fast food meals. If I were to make this stuff up no one would believe me, and yet Ken Penders kept a straight face and put it in actual, physical comics.

Dark times for the Chaotix then, folks. Dark times.

More sonic au stuff! I should mention that this au basically tells the story of how eggman rose to power from these hedgehog’s point of view wit a mix of just wholesome “give sonic and friends families who love them please”.

Anyways, more under the cut!

Charles "Chuck" (Sonic, Manic/Sonia, and Tania's Uncle, Tail's Adoptive Father): Chuck is considered by his siblings (even though he is a twin with Aleena) the oldest and by far the wisest out of all of them. He wanted and still does want to bring good into the world and did that by inventing the robotizer when he was young. His intentions were that if you have a life threatening injury, you simply got robotizied for a few months, derobotized, and all your wounds would be fully healed! So with help from Aleena, they teamed up with a human (Eggman) and made it a reality. Except the derobotizer was still a work in process. The only way they knew that the robotitizer worked was because the "youngest" of the four, Maurice was caught in a explosion nearly killing him instantly, but he told them to robotize him for all of their sakes. Of course knowing how eggman came to be, he stole the idea from the machine, created an army and basically took over about 60% of the world. Leaving chuck regretting trusting eggman, losing his brother now under eggman's control, and even getting in a deadly incident as well but fearing the robotizer, only robotizing parts of his legs to add robotic legs after he lost them. Personality wise, he's very kind and gentle but kind of a bastard as well in a fun, chaotic way (egghead may or may not rubbed off on him) but with all the things he went through in the past, he's very hard on himself. He never really takes care of himself whether he doesn't sleep for days, never eats/eats to much, over works to the point of pain; he need s help but usually forgets (or is just to depressed) to ask. But his family and friends keep him going and encourage him to do better. Despite all of this, he's still a very fun dad/uncle who wants things to get better and show off his inventions. And for family/friend relationships: He's still the kind uncle everyone loves but now he has a son, Tails! He found him when he was a baby when he was escaping eggman's bots with sonic and have raised him since. Tail's has definitely looked up to chuck and chuck couldn't be more proud of him. Chuck is currently in a relationship as well with King Nigel (yes, sally's dad but i'll get into that part later) ever since Nigel made him his personal knight. Aleena "Ally" (Sonia/Manic's Mother, Sonic, Tails, and Tania's Aunt): Aleena being Chuck's twin means she spends a lot of time with him. So while he went into engineering to help the world, She went into doctoring to do the same. To the point she was the "medical" side to the robotizer making sure the body heals properly. But of course chuck got fooled by eggman and the world went kaput. While chuck was trying to fix everything to the point of pushing himself to the brink while taking care of sonic and tails, Aleena was busy helping casualties while pregnant with the twins Manic and Sonia. Similarly to chuck on how he lost his legs to a battle, Aleena lost her arm to a nasty infection caused by working on patients and by not taking herself as well as she should've. After all of that, she and chuck stuck together ever since working with each other to get better both physically and mentally. Aleena has always been very motherly to everyone including her brothers. But underneath that sweet exterior you have a stubborn and tough hedgehog ready to fight at anytime. If you so dare hurt her family she WILL beat you to the ground. Similar to chuck though she does forget to take care of herself and have depressive episodes as well but not as severe as chuck. Mostly she gets very overprotected on her kids and bros to the point she'll get frustrated with them if they call her out. She currently isn't in a relationship with anyone and rather not be. As for the reason she had the twins she simply wanted to be a mother. So she found a donor to help her and she's been a single mom since. Though everyone was really worried about her going through with the pregnancy since she had them late in her life. Paul "Roly Poly" (Tania's dad, sonic, tails, sonia/manic's uncle): Out of all the siblings Poly is probably the most "unique" out of the four. As in, he's not as out going as his siblings and had nothing to do with the robotizer. He was more of the emotional support for all of them during it. Making sure they got their rest, cooking and cleaning etc. In fact, he had his suspicions about Eggman the older he got! So when his bro got robotized and eggman took over he kinda saw it coming. But he has been with his sibs every step of the way! And unlike his siblings who basically turned into cyborgs, he's the only one without any robotic parts. He took care of both Aleena during her pregnancy and Chuck when he was so injured he was bed bound and without his legs. Kinda becoming the big bro of the family even though he's considered the second youngest. Poly out of the four is by far the strongest and heaviest. Earning the nickname "Roly Poly" by curling into a ball and crashing through walls and bots with ease. He's surprisingly very quiet and a very relaxed person. But he has a history being very lazy and scams people (mostly humans which i'll get into later) out of money and stuff. But his siblings catch on quick and always put a stop to it. Also unlike his siblings he is kinda a vagabond. He loves to travel the world to learn about cultures, even into eggman territory just to mess with them. But he isn't alone on his travels, his daughter Tania tags along as well. He used to be married but sadly his wife died during childbirth. Because of this, he wants to give Tania the best and teaches her everything he knows, which isn't much since most people consider Poly the dumbest out of the four. He did used to be pilot at one point but gave up on it to raise Tania. But he doesn't travel as much as he used to and lives with his sibs to of course raise his daughter. Maurice "Maury" (Sonic's dad, tails, tania, sonia/manic's uncle): Finally it's time to meet the "youngest" out of the four and the father of Sonic, Maurice. Maurice similarly to Poly, didn't have much to do with the robotizicer except that he was the first to be both robotized and derobotized. He is a musician, loves to sing and play instruments whenever he can. but one day when he was with his sibs an explosion nearly killed him, thus begging to be robotized because 1. To see if it truly can save him and 2. To see Sonic the day he will be born. While the robotizing worked, eggman quickly took control of Maurice and the world, and the rest of Maurice's memories are blury. A mix of working on machines, fighting the freedom fighters, and the occasional panic of randomly regaining conscious wondering what is happening before being put back under. One day as Chuck was helping the FF, he recognized Maurice and immediately took him home even though his own little brother was trying to kill him. And after helping him regain his memories and a tearful reunion, they got started right away on the derobotizing process (which funny enough, also wasn't fully trusted) and he was somewhat back to normal! As in, since he's been in a robot shell for 15 years instead of the four months he should've been, he growth was severely stunted and malnourished, making him hospitalized for a good couple of months and his eyes never brought back to normal. But he didn't care cause he was back home. Out of all the siblings he is the loudest and happiest of the bunch. To the point it can be annoying to some. But he can easily bring a smile to anyone's face. As well as being cheerful he can also be quite emotional. Getting upset easily and freaking out over small things. As stated before he's a musician, loves to sing and dance and creating new songs. His relationship with Sonic is interesting cause he knows that Chuck is more of a dad then he'll ever be, but Sonic still loves Maurice and wants to take him on adventures even though Maurice's health is keeping them from doing so. As for his relationship he's still married to Sonic's mom, Static the Cheetah even after they reunited. They've always had a strong bond ever since they met and want to keep it that way.

The beach trope: another one that often comes early in Sonic's quests, and this one's no different, though expectations are very mildly subverted by making it the third zone instead of the very first. (Careful Crusher, you had the audience on the edge of their seats there.)

More importantly though, it's possibly one of the most famous and celebrated level tropes in the series. Emerald Coast is undeniably iconic, Seaside Hill is just as iconic while also merging with the Green Hill setup, and Wave Ocean... is a poor man's Emerald Coast, but it's probably better than most levels in '06 by comparison, so it too is iconic, from a certain point of view. We can't forget Jungle Joyride either, even if that's mostly because we got to see the frame rate die before our very eyes.

So how do you make your interpretation stand out? How do you prevent having a Wave Ocean 2: Wave Oceaner on your hands? Well, it's actually very simple...

Creating Zone 3: Coastline Resort

3-1: Shining Shore

Remember when I said that sometimes all it takes to make an environment feel different is the time of day, or a change in weather? This is one of the first major examples of putting that philosophy into action, as compared to previous beach levels, which were usually content with taking place in the bright sunny daytime, this one takes place under a pleasant purple sunset.

This of course contrasting heavily with not only the blue sea, but also the sands, which although given a mild touch of purple courtesy of the sunset, cannot fully hide their natural shade of white.

And of course, waterfalls.

We can’t forget the waterfalls.

Despite being a true blue beach level first and foremost, there are also a few hints of plaza, further setting it apart from the Emerald Coasts and Not-Emerald Coasts of old times past. This aesthetic in particular is based heavily on the seaside town of Whitby.

No doubt Sonic would admire this place, at least when he's not forced to go deep underwater. Maybe when the adventure is over, he can come back here and have a relaxing moment with... someone. Dunno who though. I doubt Eggman would be interested, and not just because he's actually in-character. Oh well, plenty more horses in the sea.

Speaking of, what about the underwater sections? Shining Shore does have them after all, in full 3D, as opposed to making them bottomless pits in disguise. Unsurprisingly, everything's a lot more blue than purple down there, gorgeously so, but the coral reef provides its own variety of colour.

The local fishies don't seem to mind you being in their line of sight... nor do the Badniks, but probably for a different reason.

Since we're three zones in, you might have noticed by now that each zone, regardless of their overall colour scheme, has one element in at least one act that goes all rainbow with the colours than everything else. You had the flower patches in Gleaming Meadows, you had the wood barriers in Tricky Tropics with their rusting paint jobs, and now we have the coral reef in Coastline Resort... any reason for this?

Alas, the answer is a mundane one: it's just a little way of tying all the zones in Viridonia together. As this quest revolves around the mystery of the elusive Ethereal Zone, this seemingly inconsequential aspect is a way of ensuring that it will always remain at the back of your mind. It may be relatively more subtle and easy to miss than, say, a giant moon glaring down angrily at you no matter where you go on the map as it literally comes closer and closer to killing everyone, but the intention is effectively the same: the central meat of the setting and story is always present in some form, however indirect, even if the characters aren't currently discussing it.

Also, shout out to the lighthouse that helped our heroes by inadvertently blinding the pursuing mechanized orca.

You really put a dent in Heavy Gunner's strategy.

3-2: Crazy Rapids

Being a whimsical water park, made even more whimsical to fit the video game format, this one explains itself in a lot of areas. But let's go over the finer details anyway, shall we?

As mentioned in the fic, the park has been made to fit in seamlessly with the ruins present in the area, thus creating a Good Future-esque wonderland of nature and technology in harmony. For an idea of how the ruins aesthetic would work, imagine something akin to the Sunset Beach Resort in Jamaica, particularly the long bridge and archways you can see in both of these shots:

Kind of has an Aquatic Ruin vibe, doesn’t it?

Even then, that only applies to half of the architecture, as the other half breaks up the yellow with some white, reminiscent of a certain OTHER watery location in Sonic's past...

We also have the giant fountains sprinkled around the place. There are two types of fountains to be exact, both of which may seem familiar to the attentive eye...

The difference? They're larger. MUCH larger. As in, you can actually platform your way on and around them.

As for what’s inside? It's exactly how you'd imagine it to be, albeit exaggerated even further to befit a Sonic level.

And in-tune with the beachside mood, the Chao Garden found nearby would take a page from the one in Station Square...

...with a little extra flavor of this...

...complete with miniature water slides and the like for the adorable inhabitants... the inhabitants that Eggman currently has an unexplained interest in. How do the Chao factor into his latest plan?

3-3: Aquarium Gallery

Disappointed that Crazy Rapids lacked that smooth red-on-blue contrast that Aquarium Park from Sonic Colours had? Well we can’t all be in the same league as Eggman sadly, but fear not, for the similarly named Aquarium Gallery gets right in on the action, combining red walls and an overall upper class aesthetic...

...with the expected quantities of shimmering blue that comes with the aquarium setting. And with glass tanks of great size, comes great fishies to go along with them.

The black and white checkered floor would also be a must. It's a Sonic game, we gotta have a checkered pattern somewhere. It just works. /ToddCrusher

Don't worry about the living conditions for the fish here, by the way. Eggman mechanizing them aside, the people who work at the park - and those who visit it - make sure to treat all the marine life with the utmost respect and kindness. Just a shame that they're apparently not so willing to lend that same understanding to Trudy... but it does provide an early hint that despite the few genuine bad apples who are outright antagonistic towards Trudy, most of the folks ignorant to her condition are exactly that at worst: ignorant. Meaning, despite first impressions, most of them are not bad people at heart, and with a little help and persistence, it's not entirely impossible that they can eventually learn to understand and sympathise with Trudy's situation.

In other words, they have more dimension than the background characters in Sonic Boom, where they're all mostly a bunch of one-note arseholes with little redeeming qualities and don’t deserve to be saved by Sonic in the slightest.

Anyhow, eventually, after a trip through one of those sweet underwater tunnels...

...we find ourselves in the cavern area, where red is exchanged for turquoise, and there are reflected ripples galore. Since the Marble Caves in Chile already look halfway to being a Sonic level due to its unique formations, that's the best comparison I can make here.

Too blue, you might say? Well, the sunset from earlier would be poking through the holes in the wall, adding some warm to the cool once more... the giant seashells everywhere help spice it up too.

Like these, but bigger than Ken Penders’ ego.

The outside structure for this place is shaped like a giant wall, which predictably brings the Hoover Dam to mind:

And that applies inside as well, at least initially. The similarities indoors come mostly from the generators, as well as the sheer size of the place.

Since it's considerably rustier however, we have darker lighting in place, with the sunset outside preventing it from being too dark inside. There’s also a copious amount of daring graffiti caused by hoodlums... or maybe Eggman, since he'd probably be the type to do that to any property that isn't his. Some of this graffiti would look very impressive...

While others would... uh...

Look, they tried, okay?

With all this graffiti, that means there’s opportunity for a generous helping of cheeky references to previous installments if you’re able to find them... and if you can understand them. To this day, the typo in “make belif reborn” has not been corrected. Absolutely disgusting.

But as the fic dictates, the further you go on, the tidier and more high tech it becomes. Simply put, this section would remind one of Aquatic Base from '06, mainly because I've always liked the idea despite its characteristically terrible level design, so why not salvage the concept and give it a second chance?

With some added flavor to make it less monotone, mind you. Like actual water sections, some green lights to break up all the blue, giant crab robot threatening to kill you... the works.

Sonic may be glad that this zone is behind him, but little does he know, it's not the only zone with intense water action around these parts. Luckily for him, that won't be for a while, so he can breathe a sigh of relief for now. Still, we know Eggman has other ways of keeping the gang on their toes...

Metal and Mettle (Part 1)

A few days after Scourge and the Suppression Squad have taken control of Freedom HQ, Miles alerts Scourge to an interesting and unexpected visitor - namely, Metal Sonic, through whom Eggman is speaking and watching.

Yeah, don't underestimate a fellow evildoer, Scourge. Meanwhile in New Mobotropolis, Sonic and Knuckles stand before the Council of Acorn to try to get permission to take the base back. Unfortunately for them, the council votes four to two to leave it for the time being, as they don't see Scourge as that big of a threat, and want to focus on taking New Megaopolis from Eggman before going after smaller holdings. Sonic, of course, does not take this well, and tries to talk to Knuckles about it once they exit the building.

Oh, Knuckles. You have to stop angsting about this, my dude. Sonic leaves the city on his own, musing as he races back to Freedom HQ about how despite their recent successes in battle, and many gains against Eggman and his forces, he can't help a strange feeling that overall they're losing ground. He hopes that kicking Scourge out of the base will cheer him up, but is brought up short by the sight of Scourge and Metal Sonic battling it out on the grass outside. Miles stands nearby watching, and not-so-subtly tests Scourge's leadership by asking if he wants help against Metal, as surely the others helping him would only be an insult since he conquered his planet on his own. Sonic, uninterested in any of the politics, merely barrels in to help, offering Scourge a truce to take Metal out, but Scourge angrily refuses, and both he and Metal turn on Sonic to attack. Meanwhile, Julie-Su finds Knuckles brooding on a bench in the park, and when she presses to know what's bothering him he snaps, yelling that he can't trust himself or anyone else, as no matter what he does, someone always ends up hurt, and he can't bear to face the few remaining members of his family. Julie-Su reaches for him, looking at first like she's going to comfort him, but then…

I mean, all things considered, Julie-Su, you make a fantastic point. Your family's loss has been largely glossed over until now - I don't think she was even given a single panel before now to mourn the deaths of her foster parents, despite how delighted she was to rediscover them before - and as you point out, it's not like Knuckles is suffering alone. Back at Freedom HQ, the fight continues, with Eggman telling Metal to hang in there as he's putting the "finishing touches" on some backup. Sonic and Scourge briefly wind up fighting each other without Metal's interference, during which Sonic criticizes Scourge for taking his advice to better himself to a brutal, negative extreme. Scourge merely mocks Sonic's restraint, pointing out how much more powerful he is as a king than as a hero.

Ooh, dramatic parallels to their prior talk! I love it! Metal interrupts before Sonic can respond, and as the fight continues once more we move this time to Angel Island, where Knuckles is having a talk with Archimedes while Charmy sits nearby.

So something that needs to be pointed out is that inexplicably, this is Archimedes' last appearance in the comic, ever. Unlike all the other characters who have disappeared from the comic, there's no reason given - no genocide, no dimensional portal to swallow him up, no deaths or sudden decisions to leave and find himself on another continent, nothing. He just… never shows up again. It's disappointing, as y'all know how much I like Archimedes, but again I really do think this stems from Ian's weird, irritating habit of erasing a lot of Kenders' contributions to this world. I know that he's trying to make the comic's world more like the games, and that in the games, Knuckles is the last echidna and isn't embroiled in all these politics, but dammit, there's nothing wrong with comic Knuckles being so different from game Knuckles! Personality-wise, he's still similar, still recognizable, it's just his circumstances that are different. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be blaming Ian for all of this - for all I know, Sega themselves ordered him to get rid of all of this stuff. I dunno, man, I'm just some random fan with a blog. Speaking of controversial decisions by Ian, though, it's nice to see him doing his best to treat Charmy's brain damage with respect here. He certainly acts more childlike than he once did, but he's doing his best, and isn't a punchline, still actively participating in missions and helping Knuckles sort his own problems out.

Anyway, Knuckles, encouraged by his mentor's words, uses his warp ring to head back to the city, where he and Julie-Su give a curt apology to each other with an agreement to sort things out more fully later, when he's had more time to work through his emotional distress. They consider heading to Freedom HQ to help Sonic, but Knuckles believes that Sonic can most likely handle the situation on his own. Of course, we know better - Sonic might be able to take on Scourge or Metal individually, but both at once is a real challenge. He kicks Metal aside, only to be startled by the sight of another robot coming to join the fray - a robot that looks exactly like Scourge. Wow, Eggman, you really didn't waste any time on that one, huh? How many Metal Sonics do you think he has lying around in his base just ready for a paint job and a new assignment?

Though there's another story in this issue, we won't be covering it. Why? Well, it's the first real installment of "In Another Time, In Another Place"! I've mentioned it before, but it's basically what Ian decided to do when it was clear he couldn't keep putting in half-adaptions of random games anymore, but still needed to do tie-ins for newly-released games. With the pattern we've been taking with these tie-ins lately, you'd think this one would be for Sonic '06, but nope! For whatever reason, Sonic '06 goes completely unacknowledged within the comic verse (at least for now), with the sole exception of Shadow joining up with GUN. However, as I've mentioned before, Ian did state somewhere along the way that Sonic '06 did in fact happen somewhere during the course of the comic's plotline - it's just that due to the very nature of the game's story, the events of the plot are entirely reset and erased from the timeline at the end, meaning an adaption doesn't even have to take place, as technically, even though those events did happen, they also… didn't.

But all that aside, the tie-in in today's issue is actually for the little-remembered DS title, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, which was an RPG developed by Bioware of all companies (and yes, they did include one of their trademark Bioware romance sidequests, though it's probably of little interest to anyone who doesn't ship Sonamy). While again, we're not covering it due to it being non-canon, it's an important thing to note regardless. For one, these In Another Time, In Another Place installments became pretty commonplace throughout the comic as new games were released, but perhaps more importantly, this was the game that apparently really got under Kenders' skin. The problem is that after all he'd done to develop the world of the echidnas and all the political and military factions thereof, this game's plot ended up heavily centering around a band of echidnas in dark armor emerging from a parallel dimension where time moves more slowly, with an intent to take the Master Emerald and use it to cement their place of power in the real world once more, though one female echidna realizes the error of her people's ways and abandons her army to side with Knuckles against her megalomaniacal and powerful male leader. Gee, sound familiar? While I don't believe that Bioware or Sega actually copied Kenders' ideas outright - the way I've described it makes it sound similar, but there's a ton of differences in the plot and presentation that definitely indicate they're two different ideas by different people - Kenders certainly seems to think it's a rip-off, and this was from what I understand at the core of all his problems with Sega that led to his eventual lawsuit that forced the reboot of the comic. It sucks, too, because even aside from losing all the years of history in the preboot, the plot of Sonic Chronicles was actually quite fascinating and it ended on a cliffhanger, which will never, ever be resolved because Sega doesn't even want to touch that can of worms after everything that happened. I think the game has actually been quietly stricken from canon, too, because the cliffhanger literally involved Eggman having taken over the world while everyone was away, and there's just no way to solve something like that offscreen. Just a bad time all around, folks. As they say in the fandom - thanks, Ken Penders. Still, though, we have quite a ways to go before we hit the preboot's end, so let's forget about the negative stuff and keep trucking on.

2.Wrong Impressions

Synopsis: Sequel of "First Impressions" I strongly recommend to read the first part before reading this.

    It's been one year since Sonic disappeared. During this year, Shadow began to wonder if the feelings he had for Amy were real or even worth fighting for. 3.10 Days

Amy only has ten days left to live on this planet and Shadow's feelings towards Amy may bloom into something else.

5.The Dark Prince

Synopsis: Shadow the Hedgehog coped with his feelings for Amy Rose by drinking a cup of black coffee every day at the coffee shop she owns. He kills two birds with one stone, satisfying his addiction for coffee and successfully maintaining a conversation with his love interest. Everything was going as usual until one-day G.U.N's Commander was found dead and the main suspect is no other than Amy Rose. Shadow is now forced to leave his job as a G.U.N agent and help Amy prove her innocence. And along the way, Amy is starting to realize why everyone is falling head over heels in love with "The Dark Prince."

But some things are just not the way they seem.

Any Canon!Eggdad headcanons you got?

I have a headcanon that when (or if, for that matter) Eggman dies, Sage will take over the empire but keep keep his logo and general aesthetic intact out of honor.

I have this funny post where I say I think Eggman would be highly against passing the empire on to anyone, not even to Sage. He wants to have the world to himself and I think that he feels that if he can't have it, no one can. I think he'd rather take the world with him in death and blow it up before even entertaining the idea of passing it down it for a second lol. He called it the Eggman Empire and Eggmanland and has his visage plastered on everything for a reason. He wants to be the center of attention and for it to be all for him and about him and nothing more or less. His ego and greed would never allow it.

I like how you say "if", because I also imagine that if he has the choice and ability, he'll want to extend his lifespan or immortalize himself in any way because he needs all the time in the world to build and rule his empire, especially as an older man already. With all the crazy shit he's survived, age is the only thing currently that could kill him. But he needs the time to build it all and enjoy it, he didn't build a throne to pass it down to someone else in matter of a few decades or so! And that can tie into his refusal to let anyone else take his place when he's not around, it can't happen if he never dies in the first place.

But if he did die then of course someone would have to take it over whether he wants it or not. But he certainly wouldn't leave anything in a will, he gives nothing to nobody, not even in death! Sage would be the most appropriate of his existing creations to take the reigns with her loyalty, devotion, and respect for him until the end. But I think she'd be hesitant to do anything without his authorization and struggle with it, while Orbot and Cubot would just be like "hey he's gone and we're free now, it doesn't matter what he wanted" but she'd feel like she's betraying his wishes so it'll always feel wrong. Pretty sad thought.

But yeah, I think she'd be very careful and strictly compliant to his orders and wishes as if he never left because her honoring of him and his wishes will remain strong forever. She'd maintain it the exact way he left it with its design, aesthetics, and all, and run it only exactly how he did. It'd make you forget you're in a world with Eggman no longer in it, when you're still surrounded by him and his ideas and rules, with his image plastered everywhere just like he wanted. It would look like he never left and is going to come back any moment and take his seat on his throne but he's never going to come back again.

While everyone gets to remember him and it feels like his spirit is still alive and they're never able to forget him, it would only constantly remind Sage of the truth after being much closer to him but she'd willingly live with never being able to move on and escape the pain, just for him to get what he wants like always. She wants to think those efforts would make him proud, even if her taking over wasn't what he wanted, but she remembers how mad he'd get when she did anything differently so she'd always feel a little bad for that. But she never stops having his best interests in mind, no matter what she does.

I'm feeling emo about this lol. If I was in the Sonic Universe and he was real and really had existed in my world, a world without Eggman in it after he died would be so fucked and not one worth living in ahakgbskgjskg

Anyway yeah! I've been thinking of further developing some more of my canon accurate Eggdad headcanons for some more posts but I still need to get started on that properly and I haven't had the time but stay tuned because I definitely want to contribute to the small amount of canon accurate Eggman and Sage Eggdad fan stuff.

Review: Sonic the Hedgehog

So I think that probably the most important part of my opinion on Sonic the Hedgehog is my mindset entering the theater. I was going in knowing that I was seeing a live action on CGI Sonic the Hedgehog film geared towards children and I think that is why I ended thinking it was pretty good. I also like almost everything I see in a theater so take that however you want to. Also I am a 3D Sonic player which means if you are a traditional 2D Sonic fan then you and I played different games growing up. With all that in mind here’s the review.

Sonic the Hedgehog has a pretty good cast, I’m just gonna do a quick review of everyone since there weren’t a ton of characters. Ben Schwartz plays Sonic and I actually didn’t even recognize his voice but he absolutely kills it. Sonic has always played on the edge of two personalities: extreme sports bro and cartoon character. Ben and the writers manage to stay well within the tightrope walk given to them adding a lot of emotional range to a character mostly portrayed as a carefree ball of energy. James Marsden is the supporting character Tom. James has mild jokes throughout the movie and I can happily say that his witty personality hits in every comeback and it’s reliably funny throughout the film, he has very little moments of awkwardness that is definitely in the fault of the writers but in the end James Marsden adds an adult charm to a movie that would otherwise have been cartoon nonsense. Next is Jim Carrey, he plays Dr. Robotnik, the main antagonist of the Sonic series. This is both a complete disaster and a professional working at his craft. There moments when I absolutely hated watching him on screen and moments where I couldn’t help but burst out in laughter at his acting. He held the least funny and most funny moments in the film and I think that maybe it hurts the film to an extent but ultimately saves it. Mind you he doesn’t have a lot to work with, Dr. Robotnik in the games is a one note villain who shows up in a giant robot, laughs maniacally, steals diamonds with long robot arms, and leaves. The original game character has no real personality to pull from for a movie and I think that the writers and Jim Carrey probably did as best as they could but really should have cut or rewrote a good portion of his jokes. The rest of the side cast does an alright job, I think that Tika Sumpter was believable but relatively bland, same with Adam Palley but Natasha Rothwell is hilarious. It was overall good casting and the better moments over shadow the lesser scenes.

The movie does really interesting things with the source material, I liked how the rings played into the world building, how every time Sonic gets hit he loses his rings, how Dr. Eggmans interest in Sonics power headlines his research (refering to how he would tirelessly attempt to clone Sonic in the games). Each little thing like the drones separating into smaller drones poke fun at Robotniks tech in the games. There is a lot to love about the details if you are a fan of the Sonic franchise, but you also have to realize that Sonic (as a cartoon animal that talks) is a kids movie and there are going to be a lot of things about it that are more simply put. The plot is interesting enough to keep a really good momentum throughout and the film doesn’t overstay its welcome. Sonics internal dilemma is sincere and well developed. I don’t think that they made Tom’s issue with leaving home seem that relevant, it touched on the effect Tom leaving had on the town and the sacrifice his wife was making but it never made you feel like Tom leaving or staying had a very large impact on Tom or the people around him. The weight that this places on Sonic feels very genuine however and does a good job of forwarding his narrative. Tom does get a satisfying ending but it feels pieced together and under developed.

Sonic the Hedgehog is an okay movie. You will get the most out of it if you are either a fan of Sonic, a kid, or even better yet, both. It’s easy to forget the parts that left a sour taste in your mouth and very easy to remember the parts that made you blow up in fits of laughter. Clever plays with the plot and grounding performances by Ben Schwartz and James Marsden keep this buddy road trip movie a fantastical venture into this not so strange adapted world of Sonic from becoming a disaster. It’s hard to recommend this one but if you are curious about it then it may be worth checking out. Or just wait till it streams, you should do that instead.

issue #23 made me really heccin’ emo over eggman and sonic. i was prepared for it, but also ?? not prepared??? holy frick im just gonna ramble under the cut.

first of all, i’m just gonna’ idly ramble about some things i noticed.

Eggman, literally 11 issues ago:

he makes these off remarks and then changes his mind whenever it’s convenient for him smh. that or hes a freaking liar and. WELL THAT’S PRETTY TRUE HONESTLY.

i’ma be honest fam starline is a freaking mood rn. it’s ?? so dumb?? LIKE EGGMAN WHERE IS YOUR FUCKING FAILSAFE UR SOLUTION WAS “not touching the robots hurr durr” PL EASE.

In retrospect, though, this is an interesting parallel to Forces because he’d apparently learned from his mistakes. TBF, and it has been brought up elsewhere on tumblr, this is a man recovering from amnesia. He must’ve just not gotten to that part. OR HE’S JUST. DUMB AND ARROGANT. Like, yeah, sure, there’s no vaccine - lol the heroes can’t fix anything & it also means you’re valuable because you’re the one person who can. BUT COME ON EGGMAN.

my friend actually predicted this holy shit. i was rambling abt a discussion we had in the egg cult, where we were talking about the possibility of sonic infecting eggman to blackmail him into getting the cure because he’s reached the point?? hes so done with eggman’s shit??? all his friends are in danger and hes backed into a wall what else is he to do than do the one thing he doesn’t want to: use eggman’s tactics against him?

and my friend was like:

LIKE. IT IS A HUGE RISK, and Sonic went FOR IT. I’M SCREAMING TBH.

THIS CONFRONTATION WAS SO FUCKING RAW YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. I thought I was ready for it but I really, REALLY wasn’t. I love the little details of Starline bein’ like: “oh fuck” - usually he’s pretty cocky around Sonic but uh. HE’S INFECTED NOW. And the zero remark - idk if that’s intentional on the writer’s part but ZERO TO HERO anyone?

anyway toxi broke down crying at this point. you have no idea how much i was sobbing over my blue son just. pouring out his heart to his nemesis. that’s top tier tearjerking material.  also starline passive aggressively readjusting his outfit lmfao. BITCH IM FABULOUS. but man the usage of ‘ BE’ and ‘LIKE’ - Sonic knows who Eggman is; he’d never ask him to be something he’s not. but it’s also a reiteration of sonic’s want to see good in him; being LIKE tinker is a statement in that he wanted eggman to be who he was, but NOT to go back. to do good for the world. have it be his own decision, because deep deep down:

isn’t that what he really wants?

Also, although there are those sickly sweet descriptions, the usage of ellipses in this narrative really fucks me up because you can practially hear the gradual realization in eggman’s voice. his mockery starts out so !!! but it just eventually gets straight to the point, as a list. as a routine. because he was used to it. and because, some part of him misses it. notice the usage of ‘need’ and ‘use’. they needed him, and yet he used the people that appreciated him sm like puppets.

some nice guilt there, huh, doc?

ALSO I SPENT LIKE, HOURS TRYING TO FIND THIS EXACT DIALOGUE, but Eggman has a conversation in Dark Brotherhood with Sonic and makes this remark:

LIKE??? this isn’t new to his character, actually? Ignoring the ken penders thing bc smh. Going by this game he’s actually kind of okay with that set up. And he just works so well with the others too??? this isn’t even taking into account the other games he’s teamed up with them. I’m sorry but my head just goes back to this line so many times; it’s one of the ones that stick with me, along with ‘complicated guy’ from lost world. HE COULD!! legitimately do good. and he actually doesn’t find it too bad??? IM EMO MAN...

and IMAGINE making super cool things that people genuinely like... eggman has a HUGE ego, that much is very apparent; he’s super big on appreciation as comes with. and with tinker? he had that - he felt appreciated and loved. people LIKED what he made, and he didn’t have to bend over backwards to have that. his work felt included and he didn’t have to take that appreciation by force like he did with his lackeys (which half the time was fake anyway) .

first and foremost - WE SEE THAT OPEN YOUR HEART REFERENCE, IDW. also sonic’s frustration here, in comparison to the lil smile the panel before - he’s just!! “WHY CANT YOU WAKE THE FRICK UP OLD MAN”. the justification here seems a tad bit like DENIAL to me. and the justification seems... kind of odd from him? since when does EGGMAN justify anything he does? He does what he wants and when he wants, because he’s the E.G.G.M.A.N. he doesn’t care what anyone thinks... right?

it’s because - especially with the usage of better - he didn’t like where that train of thought was going. for once, he’s justifying himself - because the alternative is admitting sonic is right. that he did like that life. that he’d want to go back. throw it in a hierachy and it’s all so simple, right?

also the inclusion of open your heart lyrics here. the incident with chaos was just as catastrophic. and these lyrics in context of the previous panel, highlights how sonic and eggman both seek unity and peace but in their own ways; eggman’s is just evil. it seems a little bit of a diversion to me - to antagonise sonic and make him forget about it. what better way to do that than to relate to him? ‘own styles that we won’t change’ highlights a stubbornness in ways, too, especially with the current context of eggman denying his old life. ALSO IT IS LITERALLY TELLING EGGMAN TO OPEN HIS HEART.

and ngl this seems like idle banter to hide the fact he genuinely felt remorse for his actions for a second. because lbr he has a habit of being all talk when a plan goes wrong or suffering inside,

which starline does quite pointedly explain.

As I was saying above, Sonic has no choice in what to do now - he’s reaching his limit. OR ELSE. hes pondering doing the thing he doesnt want to do. and honestly, ‘you can’t stop me. no one can,’ is so hardhitting not just because of its looming threat, but because of how much it solidifies for sonic that he can’t take the chance anymore. if anyone is going to change eggman, it has to be himself.

also can i just cry over how much sonic trusts tails. im getting sa2 flashbacks.

also man i’d like to point out the specific use of ‘lock you away forever’. it coooould be a reference to sonic’s time imprisoned during the events of sonic forces. bitterness?

NOT SAYING I CALLED IT, BUT I CALLED IT. it still hurts though. and wow, it really is horrifying when eggman fears his own heccin’ creation, huh?

i live for sonic being passive aggressive with eggman. give me more please.

im immensely concerned the direction starline is going, honestly. but it does say a lot about eggman; how he’ll keep trying the same things expecting different results, but failing and never seeing that. because he’s EGGMAN; every plan is brilliant by default!

i love how sonic just !!! SHOT... THE MOMENT HE WAS REMINDED WHAT WAS AT STAKE. son i love you so much you’re doing great sweetie

also, man, can we talk about eggman avoiding his blatant faults, and shoving his failures onto someone else? because this little scene here - eggman ur literally the one who crashed the thing. it had absolutely nothing to do with sonic. i feel as though this is symbolism of his self-destructive nature, honestly. hes always gotta make things harder for himself. (also starline’s face is killing me)

Eggman does what he has to, but technology won’t work every time you kick it. he thinks he can get everything through force but we have several instances in idw where force did NOT work out; you’re not gonna get far, egghead.

MHM, and just who does that sound like, Eggman? honestly the mirrors between these two are seriously destroying me. although sonic is in a horrible position, so is eggman; he likes to think he’s won the war, but hes surpassed his own expectations, and that’s going to backfire on him eventually. hes stubborn to admit he has NO REIGN over this and they’re all doomed, so he’s pinning his failures / loss on Sonic.

is that the amnesia kicking ya in the shin, eggman? or sonic’s reality check? either way, the doc hates emotions. dammit man why you gotta make him emo

future eggman is going to kick past eggman in the kneecaps. it’s times like this ur reminded how much of a kid he is. eugh but that’s work i want my victory and senseless destruction now. honestly if the doc is after success, he is certainly not getting it this way and I AM FEARING FOR EVERYONE’S LIVES. he’ll probably have to work with what’s left of the resistance like the back end of most games at some point.

I’m getting a little burnt out but i can’t forget my son and how much he hurts me.

first of all that third panel terrifies me. the fact it GOT that far does me great concern. the RED EYES? that’s pushing it fam i dont like that. the expressions are also just freaking destroying me; they’ve been PERFECT this issue. and the fact sonic is at his weakest when he feels like he’s failed everyone hurts me deeply. he has SO much on his shoulders and its getting too overwhelming for him.

also man... the whole thing with eggman... just stuff me man. but it hurts all the more because it’s so glaringly clear that there is?? some good in eggman??? he just. doesn’t want to admit it. and unfortunately these aren’t good circumstances to debate on that.

ANYWAY, THAT ISSUE WAS AGONY AND IM STILL REELING AND HAVENT EVEN. TALKED ALL THAT MUCH ABOUT SONIC HERE (on account of this being eggman’s blog) but idk if i’ll write anything on that.

“M’ sorry.”

They’d been rocking back and forth on the floor for a while, or at least Sonic is pretty sure it’s been a while. His mind is foggy, struggling not to float away from him, but it recalls, vaguely, that there had been more light streaming into their cabin a bit ago. 

“I really do not mind--”

“No, dude, I-- please. Jus’ let me apologize.”

Maybe Ruby can sense Sonic has something to say-- odd of him, right after a panic attack, since he usually needs time to gather his bearings before being okay enough to open conversation-- or maybe he’s in a mood to be less stubborn than he usually is, but he goes quiet. Sonic feels him gently, very gently, bump his head to his in quiet support.

“M’ sorry,” he begins, and he tries to put pressure on the wound he feels gush right after, but he just feels the blood in his hands and his mouth open. “M’ sorry for making a mess, an’ I’m sorry for stressing you out, and I’m sorry for kicking you and I’m sorry for hurting you and I’m sorry for freaking out in the middle of the night and I’m sorry for not being able to shower on my own and I’m sorry for--”

“--For not being okay.”

Sonic’s breath stutters, and he swallows the instinct to argue against the sentiment, but he’s known for awhile he hasn’t been okay. He hasn’t been, for a long time, but the fact still tastes bitter in his mouth, and makes him sick to his stomach. He nods, mutely. He feels Ruby’s arms snake around him tighter, and becomes aware of his hands running gently up and down his arms. A small kiss is pressed on his shoulder, which releases some of the tension Sonic’s carrying. He sighs shakily, and feels all the energy left in his both dissipate into the air around him. 

“You should know better than anyone that I have never been okay,” Ruby speaks after a moment of silence. Sonic sinks against his chest, and guiltily becomes aware of the fact he must have pricked Ruby with his quills, the way he’s holding him.

“..What about that?”

“That you have never held that against me,” the dark hedgehog adds, guiding his hand to knit with Sonic’s fingers. “So why are you so intent on holding the same thing against yourself?”

Sonic blinks, somewhere between being completely out of it and oddly present. He can still hear it-- the world caving in, the robotic whirrs of the enemy, Gadget asking for his help to deliver the next blow, Tails on the intercom, who had been so relieved to see him alive and okay, cheering him on. You’ll always be our shining hope.

And he wants to be. For everyone else, and for himself. 

“‘Cause I’m supposed to be,” he replies, even though he’s aware Ruby already knows the answer. “‘Cause.. I like chaos, right?”

Ruby hums.

“And-- I do, ‘cause no matter what, I can.. I can control myself. Always. I mean… y’know, no one knows anythin’ about this.”

He blinks his eyes open, even if they weight as much as a robot’s foot. Sonic stares, blearily, down at his feet, and down at the arms around him that had to keep him in check to not do something stupid, something Sonic couldn’t control. Something Sonic couldn’t control, because he was back there, for a while. For a while, he was back in space, and he was also back in that basement, and he could somehow hear both the harrowing loneliness of Eggman’s cell and the pain, pain, pain of not having autonomy, of being held to one place and forced to hear bones break and see blood spill on the floor. He couldn’t change it then, just like he couldn’t stop himself from going back over and over and over and over.

“An’ I can’t anymore.”

Sonic bites down on his cheek, suddenly angry and frustrated and for a second or two he thinks of everything else, of the people he let down and the people he let die and the people he couldn’t help and every problem he can’t fix and the fact he can’t get it into his damn brain that he’s okay, should be okay, is okay and damnit he’s so tired and he hates himself, for a second. He swallows the bitter-tasting self hatred, and misses the spoonful of sugar that is his usual positivity. 

Just for a second or two, he feels drained and dim. Sonic laughs, and chokes on the sound.

“‘Ere’s still-- some part’a me that’s back there. In that stupid base, in that-- fucked up basement. An’ I keep thinking that I should be able to-- not care. That this shouldn’t be a big deal, cause it usually-- isn’t. And it feels-- wrong, that it isn’t. It still does.”

“Y’know, not to be a downer, ‘cause that ain’t my style, but-- s’ hard, to like myself when I’m like this.”

All he gets, for a little while, is a nod from Ruby. He squeezes Sonic’s hand, who leans into him more, as if he could disappear into his boyfriend, forget everything, and come back the same old Sonic he usually is-- the one better version of himself.

Instead of saying anything, Ruby shifts, and gathers Sonic in his arms. Too drained and too exhausted, the smaller hedgehog lets his head be laid on the alternate’s shoulder. Footsteps scale their way up the stairs, until the door to their bedroom creaks open, and a dazed Sonic is laid on the bed. Soft, warm blankets are tucked over him, as meticulously as Ruby does much of his daily activities. Sonic opens his eyes again when he feels a shift in the weight being put on the mattress, and not long after Ruby’s grabbing him again, to lay against his chest. Sonic only moves to shuffle closer, to hide in his chest and listen to his heartbeat to ground himself. To his chagrin, Ruby grabs the side of his face, and Sonic blinks and finds himself looking at a pair of soft red eyes, concerned but adoring. Sonic recognizes that, the adoration, even while in this sour state of mind. 

“You need to stop being so hard on yourself,” Ruby speaks, and Sonic hadn’t noticed how quiet his voice is, as if Sonic is the only one he cares to talk to. As if their world is just them, in this room filled with pictures and knick knacks and memories only the two of them are privy to. “Being bitter at yourself is only going to make it worse.

“Love, you are not invincible. You work the same way everyone else does, and everyone has a limit, and that does not make you any lesser.”

Sonic makes a small, noncommittal noise, and nuzzles into Ruby’s hand. 

“I know you can do things not everyone can, and I know everyone expects you to be everything for them, but regardless of all of that, if being a mess does not make me worse, then it does not make you any worse. No exceptions. Unless you wish to be a hypocrite.”

A small laugh puffs out of Sonic's chest. He’s too tired, has so little to give right now, but can vaguely recognize the warmth in his chest that Ruby is so good at lighting. Ruby holds his face gently, and brings him in closer to kiss his cheek, and once Sonic is back to hiding in his chest fur, he kisses his head. A pair of protective arms coil around Sonic’s back, and a quiet, constant purr is being muffled into his fur. Sonic sighs, and concentrates on Ruby’s familiar heartbeat.

“I hate it when y’er right.”

My Definitive Opinion on Sonic Boom

I noticed that most of my Sonic Boom opinions were spread out amongst multiple posts, so I thought it would be best to have one big post to direct everyone to for all my thoughts. I’ve had plenty of time for all of them to sink in and, while they’re mostly negative (precautionary warning there), it’s not likely to change anytime soon. If you disagree, that’s fine, but this is just how I feel.

To keep things nice and organized, I’ve separated everything into very broad categories so I can go into each one without getting sidetracked and lingering on multiple topics forever.

Starting with...

The Plots

An obvious place to start, the plots in Sonic Boom are very basic. That’s not a bad thing, but it becomes a problem when the show goes on for, say, more than one season, because it means either sticking to very cliche plots, or trying to be creative and failing due to having to force it.

Even sadder is when the plots are predictable. In all the times I’ve talked about Sonic Boom episodes that I haven’t liked or have downright hated, the word ‘’predictable’’ came up a lot, because it’s a killer of storytelling for me unless I’m excitedly anticipating that thing happening, which was very rare in this show.

As an example for killing any and all expectations I had for an episode, Designated Heroes. The very second that Sonic laughs at his friends (whether he has a reason to or not), I could anticipate the entire rest of the episode. Obviously Eggman isn’t going to show up, obviously Sonic is going to fall asleep, and obviously the rest of the disloyal crew are going to come by and rub it in his face despite the fact that they were so sure they could beat Eggman before too. Even if I had believed with 100% certainty that Sonic deserved punishment for what he did, that is ruined when such an obvious plot point is thrown my way. To make a simpler comparison, I go on rollercoasters for the excitement of the twists and turns, not to ride for eleven minutes in a straight line because the person who made it got lazy and decided that it was passable enough to be called a rollercoaster. Sure, it functions, but it’s not stimulating in any way.

On another note, while I would like to say that the best plots to come out of Sonic Boom were the interesting ones, honestly, it was almost completely random which ones I found fun. I even tried to calculate if it was the writers or maybe the characters used by the writers, but it really just came down to the episode itself. The only consistent thing I noticed was that episodes that tried to inject some heart (The Sidekick and New Year’s Retribution) while still being funny had the best chance of sticking with me. Unfortunately, Sonic Boom has very few of these. Most episodes center around the comedy alone, and while that’s enough for some people, it’s not enough for me because it just leaves the show as very one note. The only episodes I can think of that I find very memorable while still being one note are Battle of the Boy Bands, The Meteor, and Eggheads, but all of those did fairly crazy things and had a fun time with it.

And if you just want to talk about canon? Look, I get that the show shouldn’t have to explain everything. I understand that. But, when I see Sticks suddenly having a crossbow or Sonic riding in his fancy new vehicle with no introduction and no explanation, I just have to roll my eyes. If the writers don’t care about what they introduce into their world and if it makes sense or not, then why should I?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Sonic Boom is not meant for someone like me. While I do indeed watch comedies, I prefer to have at least some substance there, and doing anything less than that makes me turn away because it means that the show is doing the bare minimum. Essentially, I’m saying that Sonic Boom only does what it has to, sometimes goes the extra mile, but mostly just sticks to the one thing. And, if that one thing fails in my eyes, then there’s no reason for me to keep watching the episode because I know there won’t be anything else to look forward to. To give an example, even if The Sidekick had failed completely at making me laugh, I would at least still watch it for the dynamic between Sonic and Tails. There’s something else there even if one element failed.

The Comedy

Probably the most divisive thing I’ve noticed being talked about when referring to specific episodes, the comedy in Sonic Boom is extremely hit-or-miss for me, and part of the reason is that most of the characters cover a very short range of comedic angles. Because most of them are widely stereotypes with few new things, it often means that they only cover one type of joke. That’s not always bad, but after a while, it can start feeling boring.

The characters who avert the trope of being one note for me are Sonic, Eggman, and Amy. Though, on the flip side of only covering one kind of joke, I think Amy covers too many, and it becomes cluttered.

Eggman is a mixed bag, either making me laugh a lot or not making me laugh at all. I’ll talk more on it later, but sometimes, he was just too much and it ruined the jokes for me.

Sonic is the only one in the show who could make me laugh consistently, and it only partly has to do with how much I enjoy his character. He just covers a range of comedy without being too much (typically the straight man, pun boy, and general fun guy) while also playing off the other characters in varying ways depending on the situation.

The Characters

What you see is what you get. The characters in Sonic Boom are basically all stereotypes, barring a few exceptions.

The characters I enjoy watching in Sonic Boom out of the main cast are Sonic, Eggman (sometimes), Orbot, and Cubot. Orbot and Cubot mix up their personalities enough to keep me invested in their characters. They occasionally seem to care about Eggman, but aren’t against making fun of him, which makes sense because he orders them around like they’re nothing. And, when he’s doing that, I can’t really get invested in his character. The moments where he’s relatable/awkward are more my thing.

I’d talk about the rest of Sonic’s crew here individually, but there’s really no point, because they all cater to one stereotype, as opposed to Amy who caters to multiple (doesn’t help, by the way, in my opinion).

Let me make it clear; there were moments where I liked these characters. There were times where I laughed at one of their jokes or gave them some slack for something they did. On a few occasions, they actually stepped out of their boundaries and did something slightly different.

The problem, however, is that these characters are still stereotypes. They exist to follow their small range of humor and fit into exactly what you expect them to. It is not to pleasant degrees.

To delve into just one of them, I’ll pick Knuckles, because he’s my least favorite out of the entire bunch.

I have no problem with Knuckles being stupid. It was a sensible leap from the original character. My problem is when he’s forgetful, because that is not stupidity. Even stupid people can remember things that are important to them. If Knuckles was commonly forgetful - as in, that was one of his character traits - I wouldn’t complain, but it makes him very irritating. Why should I care when he’s trying to be good friends with Sonic if I know that he could turn at any time and forget Sonic’s name or even who Sonic is?

No matter how the characters change - no matter how they try to be developed - it will not carry over into other episodes unless the episode is a sequel to the episode where the development took place. Now, that’s not entirely a bad thing, but only if the characters are interesting from the get-go. Unfortunately, these four are not.

Now for the big question: what makes Sonic so different from the other characters that I actually like him?

Firstly, keep in mind that while, yes, I’ve typically favored Sonic in the past, there have also been Sonic that I don’t like. Satam!Sonic and Adventures!Sonic have both been Sonic I haven’t enjoyed watching.

And, there have been things with Boom!Sonic that I haven’t been 100% okay with. However, I could only count these moments on one hand and I don’t expect Sonic to be perfect.

One reason I enjoy Boom!Sonic is that he doesn’t completely follow a stereotype. The closest stereotype for him is the ego stereotype, but he mixes it up with his love of puns, his straight man routine, and his rare silly antics. Also, he’s not a jerk, as most ego characters are. He’s usually a pretty good guy.

Now, what about the times where he isn’t, however rare they are? Well, that brings me into my next reason.

Depending on how a character is treated by the other characters, I tend to give them slack on things they do. If Sonic is being treated poorly by everyone around him, I’ll naturally be more understanding if he’s acting in a way that isn’t perfect, because he’s not being treated fairly anyway. Or, if the writing is being unfair to him or shifting things against his favor, I’ll be more forgiving if he does anything ‘’wrong’’. Using Late Fees this time as my example, I don’t care that Sonic is procrastinating on getting Amy’s book back to the library because one, obstacles are put in his way before he’s even done anything wrong, and two, Amy has forced this task upon him without warning instead of returning the book herself like she should.

And, I also can excuse Sonic because he clearly isn’t used to friendship. He’s been a loner and not open to having friends; of course he’s not going to have social interaction with them correctly. He also doesn’t know the cores of friendship (though he has many good traits of being a great friend), so if he’s being treated wrongly, he doesn’t really know that he is and, during the few times he does something wrong, he might not even know that it’s wrong in the first place (I’m sure sometimes he does, but on occasion, he’ll give a look or response that seems to suggest that he doesn’t understand), because he was alone before. He hasn’t had any experience and obviously can’t improve if no one tells him what he’s doing wrong.

Which brings me to my final point...

The Treatment

Throughout most of my time watching Sonic Boom, regardless of how much of a fan I could say I was, there was a lingering feeling that started at around Episode 15 (Aim Low) and then continued as I kept watching the series.

A feeling of unpleasantness.

Looking at it purely from Sonic’s perspective, this is not a group of friends that I want to have. This is not a friendship that I want. They change sides on him without warning, simply to follow the narrative. He deserves better.

I’d like to shrug my shoulders and just pass episodes off when they do such things, but I can’t. I can’t settle with the knowledge that Sonic could have a good relationship with his ‘’friends’’ in one episode, but have it change with no warning in another.

Characters should not have to work around the story. The story should have to work around the characters. If that can’t be accomplished, then the story means nothing and is only a fruitless attempt to make a plot with characters who don’t fit.

And I know that there are episodes that are not meant to be taken seriously. Technically speaking, none of the episodes are meant to be taken seriously.

What does that really mean? From that standpoint, all of the characters mean nothing. They’re there only to serve the comedy, and I’m sorry, but I think that’s a really lousy way to treat characters. It’s also a huge factor on why I tend to laugh less than the average person does at this show. If I’m not attached to a character, I’m a lot less likely to find them funny, and most of the characters in this show change whims in the blink of an eye.

See, I can’t let go of these episodes because they are canon. Unless stated otherwise, every episode is canon to the character’s personality and story.

Take ‘’Alone Again, Unnaturally’’ as an example. In this episode, Sonic’s crew are trying to help him go faster and come up with crazy schemes that Sonic is understandably unsure about. They don’t put his safety first, opting for their own and blatantly ignoring him when he tells them to wait.

Now, obviously, this was done for comedy. You’re supposed to laugh at Sonic’s screaming and pain.

I don’t, so let’s take that into consideration. What changes in this story if I did find it funny?

Nothing. Whether I laughed or not, the plot remains the same. What the characters do to each other remains the same. These pieces of the story are incapable of magically disappearing. They happened, no matter how much you laughed or didn’t laugh and regardless of if it was intended for comedy or not.

And moments like that impact my view of the characters as a whole. Even if they acted like saints in a future episode, that doesn’t change the fact that they did what they did and weren’t even sorry.

When they made Sonic feel so bad that he went to Eggman for help? Not sorry.

When he nearly drowned because they forced him to go into the water? Not one apology.

When he finally got so upset at everyone’s lack of respect for him that he quit, only returning because of a twisted strategy concocted by someone who was supposed to be his friend, meaning they knew he’d be too nice to not help? Not. One. Bit.

Of course it bothers me when the villagers are rude and saying bad things towards Sonic when he does nothing wrong, but I can usually pass it off because the villagers are supposed to be a mob. They’re meant to be wild cards, capable of doing whatever the writer needs at that moment.

The actual main characters should not be that. They should never be that, at least for me.

Whenever there’s a hint of sympathy between the characters, it can all be thrown to the wayside immediately for another scene or another piece of dialogue that really makes it seem like no one cares what happens to Sonic. Any potential with these characters that I would legitimately love to see get developed is left and forgotten just to revel in how stupid one is or how crazy another is, or even to have a subjectively tasteless Sonamy joke that honestly means nothing and only exists to pander to fans and bring in more viewers. The double standard that one character can do something without judgment but Sonic cannot do the same without someone judging him will never go away. Nothing matters.

The villagers, and even Sonic’s crew, don’t want him because they like his personality or enjoy having him around. It’s because he’s useful, and anything that he does that goes against that is either irrelevant or annoying to them.

There is a way to give a character an ego and not make it seem like everyone constantly wants to strangle them. In fact, the Archie comic series already did it.

But the stuff going on in Boom? It won’t change. It’ll never change. It’s honestly not even limited to just Sonic, but he is the prime example. If anything ever happens down the line that changes that, I will gladly take my words back, but I just don’t see it happening.

Unless you’re not supposed to feel anything for the characters (as in, they’re all meant to be complete jerks with no redeeming value), I don’t think any show should ever have to stoop to singling a character out and neglecting them when they don’t deserve it. In my opinion, doing so is a disservice to both the characters and the world created around them.

And that is how I feel about Sonic Boom.
