things i'd like from bg4 or any similar future games

I think BG3 is very detailed; but I would really like it if the backgrounds had mattered more. Or at least for every one. I heard if you're a drow/half-drow noble you get special dialogue with Minthara. But why didn't my Folk Hero!Tav with Wyll [or just in general?] Or my Outlander!Tav with Karlach? I love that your character gets special interaction with all and sundry, at times, re: class and race. But backgrounds make a charcacter. I don't need details. Just a bit of a nod. At least within the camp.

This brings me to point two. I wish there was a way to get friendship points. It is so strange the characters can be 'meh' about you, dislike you [and strongly], but high to exceptional bonds trigger romance. What about close friendships or growing into a family?

Speaking of, I definitely would have love some down time chatter. It is so strange to me that you get a 'this could be our last time in camp' but don't do anything with it. I appreciate the tiefling [or goblin] party. I love the idle banter on the road. But why not a couple of casual fireside chats. As a group?

I love Halsin but the fact that he is the only one we can have a polyamorous dynamic with, is bull. I'm fine with not every character being into polyam -- but maybe research more before diving into it. I am 90% sure Wyll would've been okay with Polyam - a triad too! - if it was Halsin or Astarion [maybe with Lae'zel but I have to play further to be sure]. I could see Astarion and Shadowheart swinging a 'v' dynamic, and being the best [or worst for Tav's sanity] of metamours! Maybe it would have been a hassle for coding to fit every configuration, but we deserved at least a COUPLE of Tav x Origin x Origin loving.

Also, I think we should have been able to encourage - or maybe it could have happened sans MC involvement - the npcs getting together.

War AU x Second Love

Lmao Sam this is literally the plot to the Nandopoleon AU this exists in my head 😭😭

So Fernando is Napoleon, right? And Napoleon had two wives, right? Mark is his first love(i.e. Josephine), older than him, and who he is deeply in love with but has to divorce because Mark can't really provide anything(i.e. no political advantages, infertile, etc.) So Fernando needs to make a political marriage. And who does he marry! The young son of one of the most prominent monarchies in Europe: Lance, Archduke of Austria.

Lance is very resistant to this at first of course. All grumpy like, "Dad, why do you want me to marry the guy who just defeated us in four separate wars. He's literally beaten us since practically my birth, and now I have to marry him? Yuck." Both him and Fernando come into the marriage with bad expectations, Lance despising Fernando for all he represents and Fernando viewing Lance as just a means to an end. But Lance fits in to the kingdom very well and Fernando comes to adore him and pamper him all the time. And suddenly Lance to his father is all like, "the Emperor is great actually 🥰 I was so wrong 🥰"

Meanwhile Mark is just forced to the side, and has to watch while Fernando's love for him diminishes, and his love for Lance grows. They still talk a lot and spend time together, but Mark is constantly sniping at Fernando about his new "wife."

I think Lance would stick by Fernando's side during his exile and subsequent return. He grows to be more loyal to Fernando than to his own family and original kingdom. And even though Fernando originally just views him as a means to an end, he eventually lets Lance fight alongside when they are eventually drawn back into war. Maybe in this AU, he actually wins 😔

This hurts bc the idea that Wolf had dreams of those things is already out there.

They want to be happy (though, do they deserve it? Are they allowed it? Would they allow themself it?), and the few nights they can sleep, or without being haunted (though, it could be argued the hope is what haunts them), are spent thinking through what-ifs like this.

Far, far away (sometimes. Sometimes, much closer to where the rest of their heart is) where they can live what time they have out. Where they're free of this, where no one has to suffer through it anymore. Where they can be removed from the picture, and still have some semblance of a happy ending.

There is... a kind of parallel to this, I guess, in Crow begging them to accept the "invitation" back to the City. But they aren't happy, of course - Better than they used to be, yes, but never, never happy. The only correlation is struggling to get them to come back, be it through their own hesitation or his (it's hard to ask someone to look their abusers in the eyes, when neither have forgiven one another. Or ever will)

Okay so a strange and stubborn endurance is maybe not the best book I've ever read peak high literature or whatever, but I'm only 1/3 of the way through and I've cried multiple times and been beset with that distinctive grief of a book really getting /me/. The title intrigued me and oh oh is it very much the heart of the book. A broken creature of odd endurance despite it all.

And I think it's because it manages to combine a serious emotional plot of assault/mental illness/homophobia/recovery with a fantasy intrigue setting. Most books do one or the other. You've got teen contemporary YA dealing with heavy issues but with teens in highschool, but I am 27 and tired of teen protags, or you've got intricately plotted fantasy masterpieces. This is neither. But it puts that recovery front and center within a larger fantasy setting and I cannot stress how much I need and crave that and how hard it is to find done even semi-decently.

Velasin makes me want to throw up from crying. His fears and shames, his desperation, and love, and nonexistent self esteem. His humour. His loyalty to his only friend. His Whole Deal with his father. Every chapter just brings a new. Huh. Recognition of the self through the other. Gut punch.

Idek what I'm saying. It's not the most insanely perfect book in the world. But it's doing something For Me that objectively better books don't. Idk. Idk. All I know is that I'm sick with weeping from it.

Like absolutely mind the author's note warning at the beginning, because it can be heavy, but it's never graphic or gratuitous. And it IS focused on recovery, just again, against a fantasy plot.

I really dk I'm rambling now but it's just. Oh. Oh. Maybe I needed this. Everything lately has felt either too lighthearted to be genuine or too desperately dark for me to handle. And I can only reread the cemeteries of amalo so many times. I eventually need other things that are both hopeful and dark, gutwrenching and reflective of the self, without grimdark. (Not that this is on the same level but who can compare to thara celehar To Me)
