Fair Haven (2016) 3.5/5
Cannot stress enough how perfectly this movie starts - a dark silhouette of a young man, pondering, with trees passing by in the background - you cannot know if he is on the train, or a car. And a Brahms waltz, sounding as if played on an old piano (which, turned out to be performed exceptionally well by the actor himself).
From there I almost instantly knew that this is not your average gay movie, and I was right.

Celebrating ten years of visiting four of my favourite locations in spring and summer; Martin Down, Bentley Wood, Stockbridge Down and Noar Hill
Whilst at Martin Down yesterday I remembered it’s now ten years since we first started coming here, and three other places in a spring and summer where our butterfly interest expanded a decade ago brought to all of these sites to try and see different butterflies. So I felt like doing a post to remember and explore why I love these places and we come back to them year after year.
Martin Down has the most interesting story I think so I say a little more about it. In the ten years we have been going here, Martin Down has simply become one of my favourite places to watch nature and moved close to my heart. It has an excellent array of vibrant and rare butterflies throughout the peak season, from mesmerising Marsh Fritillary to Adonis Blues that leave me spelbound. It has also become one of our top spots to watch birds too, boasting great numbers of Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, some Turtle Doves, Lesser Whitethroat, Hobby, Grey Partridge, the electric sound of Skylark song which often hits you on arrival and more. It’s great for flowers such as burnt-tip orchids and other insects of course, and I like nothing more than having a great walk round at this very beautiful spot.
Interestingly for such a big place for us our visiting got off to a modest start with a few visits on overcast days where we didn’t see too much as is natural for a new spot. Then just as we had a visit in June 2013 where we saw a lot our third or fourth visit I believe - namely our first ever Grey Partridges, Yellowhammer and moths including Chimney Sweeper - there was the moment where my Mum was bitten by an Adder here. You can’t hold anything against the place or the animal for that of course, it was just unfortunate but the trauma of it for us at the time (now a favourite story to tell) meant we didn’t visit again until being lured there by the promise of Marsh Fritillary in spring 2014 (which we did see, parking at the other car park to where the Adder bite happened first of all after returning for a few years). After that initial return there was no stopping us and in the years that followed visiting both car parks and walking around the site (also exploring over the road which shares a lot of characteristics with Bentley Wood) it became a staple of our butterfly watching calendar, very often needing to make several visits to this wonderful spot in spring/summer of a year to see the range of species as they came out. We got into a great rhythm here as the years went on of seeing the likes of Marsh Fritillary, Adonis Blue, Small Blue, Brown Argus, Dingy and Grizzled Skipper, Green Hairstreak and Small Copper.
From 2015 to 2016 onwards it took a real turn to becoming a big birding site for us, with Whinchat and Grey Partridge coming back into our lives a bit with summer sightings in 2015 and big moments in 2016 seeing our first ever Corn Buntings something we’ve seen at the site again and again and seem to thrive here and only my second ever Turtle Doves which we’ve seen a fair few times here since one of the birds that optimizes that last refuge feel of the site for a few species. Hobby, both Common Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat, Wheatear, Golden Plover and Red Kites have been other standout and notable species of our visits here over the years. In the world of mammals we’ve seen deers and it’s been a key site for us for seeing Brown Hares. I took the first four pictures in this photoset here of a Small Blue butterfly in 2019, a view in 2016, Turtle Dove in 2018 and an early purple orchid yesterday.
In a similar way to Martin Down, Bentley Wood has been another butterfly haven for us over the years since first visiting in the summer of 2013 seeing my first ever White Admiral, with multiple visits required in the season for Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Purple Hairstreak and other more common species. This enchanted wood has been a crucial place for our dragonfly and damselfly watching over the years with Broad-boded Chaser, Emperor and others and has been good to see Fallow Deers and flowers. What I’ve really noticed the last few years as mentioned in my post about our trip there last Monday is as I’ve delved into other areas of insects how rich in life it is for things such as snipe fly, green tiger beetle and oil beetle. I got the fifth and sixth pictures in this photoset here of a Small Skipper butterfly in 2019 and a view last year.
Stockbridge Down is one we tend to go in the summer, led there a decade ago by Chalkhill Blues which it is a paradise for. With the exception I think of one year where things we had on just happened to mean I saw them at St. Catherine’s Hill instead, we’ve seen them there every year since and it’s one of the finest experiences in nature watching I’ve had when you’re just immersed in clouds of these regal butterflies on hot and sunny days. Clouded Yellow and Silver-spotted Skipper were other life ticks when we first visited with Adonis Blue one on a subsequent visit that August and we’ve seen Clouded Yellow and Adonis there a fair bit since. As we bedded into visiting here nicely Dark Green Fritillary, Gatekeeper and Brown Argus have proved key species to see. You get a good range of farmland birds including Yellowhammer and can often see Red Kites here too, and I would say the big point in other areas to butterflies for this one is flowers. As in and since 2020 it’s been one of the most important places for me to develop my deepening interest in flowers with harebell and rosebay willowherb among the first things I was able to become aware of what they were which is what it’s all been about. It hosts a rich diversity of bright wildflowers. The seventh picture in this photoset is a view there and eighth a Chalkhill Blue in 2014.
Finally onto Noar Hill, and I guess the key thing all of these places share are they’re a fair journey from home hence why they were all discovered by us in a time we branched out within our county right to it’s borders in order to branch out in butterfly species to see so we only come to Noar Hill once or twice a year. This at the start of spring to look for it’s undisputed star, the precious Duke of Burgundy. In all but one of the years (when we found one in a corner of Bentley Wood) we’ve come here and been lucky to see these pearls of beauty. I am taken aback every time to revel in seeing these glorious and rare butterflies. I have said before it is our yearly pilgrimage to this hill in the South Downs to look for them. Green Hairstreak and Dingy Skipper were life ticks that day I first visited in early June 2013 too and have remained ones we’ve often seen here. This place which is also a good general spot for seeing butterflies early in the year, fits another theme of discovering these four with three in typical farmland country and something it led to. As on that first visit I finally saw what I call my lifetime bogey bird which it took me a while to see, my first Yellowhammer a bird synonymous in call and sight with this type of countryside. It’s remained something I see a lot here as well as being key to Stockbridge Down and Martin Down for us. Red Kite is another big part of the Noar Hill visit every year, alongside views of rapeseed oil fields and stunning early purple orchids. I got the ninth picture in this photoset of a Duke of Burgundy there last Monday and tenth of a view in 2020.
What a decade of discovery and wildlife wonder it has been for us. I have such a unique bond with these places as due to their distance from home and the species to look for in the birdwatching calendar and other bits in autumn and winter months taking us elsewhere we only really visit between April and August with a few exceptions of the odd earlier or later visit down the years to Martin Down particularly. So they are so symbolic of the bright, long and joyful days of spring and summer and all the song and splendour it brings which is nice. I look forward to seeing what I’ll see at these precious places next.

New Guide: Best Marijuana Dispensaries in Las Vegas
Sure, here's a more "humanized" version, with occasional informal language and colloquial expressions, that attempts to mask the sophisticated AI tone of the original text. Check out the full guide in our new post here
Hey there! Fancy an unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, spiced up with a bit of green fun? Well, we at the Las Vegas Bachelor Strippers are more than just your party planners. We’re your navigators in the buzzing realm of legal recreational cannabis - a new and exciting addition to the Sin City. Vegas has transformed into a marijuana haven, inviting both tourists and locals to check out its growing number of cannabis dispensaries. So, come along for a ride down the strip with us, your trusty guides in this leafy journey.
Since Nevada legalized recreational marijuana back in 2017, we've seen a "green wave" of cannabis dispensaries pop up all over Las Vegas. Now, with over 24 licensed dispensaries just within a two-mile radius, and another 15 expected to open by the end of 2023, it’s clear that Las Vegas is quickly turning into a must-visit destination for all cannabis enthusiasts.
And guess what? It's not just about shopping for your fav strains; Vegas is also home to The Chamber of Cannabis. It's this awesome non-profit organization advocating for fair practices in the cannabis industry, forming solid relationships with businesses in the field and political leaders.
Are you getting hyped about the idea of exploring a wide selection of marijuana strains? Or maybe you're just curious about the whole marijuana situation in Las Vegas. Whether you're a first-timer or an experienced aficionado, we've got your back. Our guide here gives you the lowdown on the current state of marijuana in Vegas, tips on picking the right dispensary, a quick guide on buying marijuana, and a rundown of the city's legal guidelines.
So let's dive in! Strap in for a different kind of Vegas experience. Join us on this wild ride through the top marijuana dispensaries of Las Vegas where you can safely and legally indulge in cannabis. It’s gonna be a high ride!
When it comes to the legality and acceptance of marijuana, Vegas stands as a green oasis in the vast Nevada desert. The state voted “yes” to Ballot Question 2 (aka “The Initiative to Regulate and Tax Marijuana”) back in 2016. And with the dawn of 2017, selling recreational marijuana was no longer a dream in Sin City.
Visiting for a bachelor party or just as a regular tourist? You need to understand the rules of the game. Firstly, you gotta be 21 or over to legally buy cannabis in Vegas, and you need a valid ID, passport, or out-of-state driver's license. Local dispensaries are ready to serve anyone who meets these criteria.
You’re legally allowed to buy up to 1 ounce of cannabis flower or 1/8 ounce of concentrates per day. But beware, exceeding this limit could leave you with a $600 fine, so stick to the rules. As for where to smoke, you can only consume marijuana in private residences OR selected dispensaries that allow on-site consumption. You definitely can't smoke it out on the streets or in parks. And remember, you can’t smoke and drive, it's a serious offense.
Vegas has also jumped on the 420-friendly accommodations bandwagon, with private rentals available for cannabis consumption through Airbnb. One such place is the Colorful Casa, conveniently located next to the strip.
Just as you'd carefully pick a show or a strip club to visit, choosing a reliable dispensary is super important for a positive marijuana experience in Vegas. Good dispensaries aren’t just about selling you the goods, they offer an experience that jives with your party mood.
Look out for places with helpful "budtenders". They're the geniuses who guide you towards the perfect strain to match your mood. Dispensaries with a wide range of flowers, extracts, edibles, and smoking accessories are a good bet too.
Considering other factors such as drive-through options and 24/7 service could also enhance your experience. With our insider tips, we're here to help you land at the perfect spot that meets your needs and amps up your Vegas experience.
To join the Vegas cannabis scene, you gotta be 21 or older and have a valid ID or passport. You also need a private place or an approved lounge to enjoy your cannabis. As for buying, you're allowed to purchase up to 1 ounce of flower or ⅛ ounce of concentrates per day. But a recent bill is set to double these limits from Jan 1, 2024.
Remember, your cannabis purchases can't cross state lines. At dispensaries, you can expect a 10% sales tax, and most of them accept cash and debit cards.
When you're up to speed with Vegas cannabis laws, things get easier. So, here's a quick crash course:
Despite marijuana being a Schedule 1 drug under federal law, it's legal in Nevada. However, taking your purchases across state lines is a no-no. Nevada has been progressively relaxing its cannabis laws, as seen with the recent bill allowing possession of up to 2.5oz of flower and ¼ oz of concentrate.
Remember, exceeding the possession limit could cost you a $600 fine, and illegally distributing or selling marijuana is a felony. You can consume cannabis only in private residences or certain consumption lounges. Items like pipes and bongs must stay in Vegas. And never consume marijuana before or while driving.
In a nutshell, the cannabis scene in Las Vegas is as vibrant as the city itself. And it's a breeze to enjoy when you know the what's, where's, and how's. So whether you're here for an epic bachelor party, a weekend getaway, or a just-because trip, this guide will help you navigate Vegas' marijuana scene like a pro. Here’s to staying high on life, Vegas style!

From “Fair Hiring, Unfair Housing” by Claire Partain for the Texas Observer:
When Jennifer Toon arrived at yet another prospective Austin rental in November 2021, she was welcomed by a dead rat. Its tail, curled limply on the duplex parking lot, was thicker than her cat’s.
While the rat seemed welcome, Toon soon learned that she was not. As one of nearly 70 million Americans with criminal records, Toon continues to face “collateral consequences,” including housing and employment obstacles, over a decade after her conviction—even in a “Fair Chance” haven like Austin.
“The worst experience trying to find housing has been in Austin,” Toon told the Texas Observer. “I have offered double deposit, double the first month’s rent. … I’m essentially just living where people will allow me to live.”
After her release from prison in December 2018, Toon struggled to find sustainable employment in her hometown of Kilgore in East Texas, and moved to Austin in 2020 when she got a job at the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities.
Tumblr media
It’s a familiar pilgrimage for many formerly incarcerated Texans; in the law-and-order-loving Lone Star State, Austin has stood out as the only city with a Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance since it was implemented in 2016. Since then, second-chance hiring has gained traction in DeSoto, which implemented its own ordinance in January. Its northern neighbor, Dallas, has been weighing a similar proposal in its city council since September.
With Fair Chance hiring in place, private employers with 15 or more employees cannot request an applicant’s criminal record until a conditional employment offer has been made.
“We’re doing things a little differently here in Dallas now,” Fair Chance proponent and Dallas City Council member Omar Narvaez told the Texas Observer. “We have to work together to figure out how we can keep people from falling into the system and not being able to get out of it.”
But in both Dallas and Austin, a tricky chicken-versus-egg scenario has emerged as formerly incarcerated residents search for viable housing options.
When Lori Mellinger returned from work early one March morning, she was surprised with a “for sale” sign leaning against her duplex.
Tumblr media
From February 2021 through February 2022, rents rose more in Austin than in any other U.S. city, according to Redfin. After slowing this summer, average rent still climbed 10 percent from October 2021 to 2022. Eager to cash in on the pandemic housing craze, when home prices swelled by as much as 20 percent from year to year, Mellinger’s landlord gave their tenant two months to pack up and move out.
Mellinger, who, like Toon, left the East Texas pineywoods for Austin around seven years after her conviction, had a few weeks to go before she found a property owner who didn’t screen for criminal records in Lockhart, 40 minutes from downtown.
As long as they aren’t violating the Fair Housing Act, landlords can deny any applicant that violates their screening process. Around 80 percent of landlords screen for criminal records.
Pulled in by employment opportunities but pushed out by housing barriers, Toon said many formerly incarcerated residents bounce between friends’ houses, put their rentals in a family member’s name, or find other ways to live in the city that claimed to welcome them.
“You feel like a fugitive,” Toon said. “I have another friend who lives out of her car, and she’s got a great job. You’re terrified to tell people where you live … [there are] programs to help you get a job right away, but what’s all that for if you have nowhere to live?

Ethereum Merge is coming this September, lookout for these 5 Altcoins!
The Ethereum merge, a high-stakes crypto development, is due to take place between September 10th and September 20th, signaling a long-awaited transformation in the technological underpinnings of the globe's second most traded crypto asset
While the technical intricacies of the merger are complicated, the end result is that Ethereum's developers are planning to modify how users of its decentralized economic system authenticate new transactions. The merger is meant to transition Ethereum out from the energy-intensive mining procedure, and it has the potential to cut the network's energy usage by more than 99 percent.
The merger has been fiercely debated in crypto communities, and it has already been postponed. However, the Ethereum Foundation, which controls and supports the network, stated in late August 2022 that it was aiming for mid-September.
What can you expect?
No Mining: If Ethereum switches from mining to staking as planned, mining will no longer be able to validate transactions on Mainnet. Instead, all new transactions will be confirmed by auditors on the Beacon chain. Mining payouts, which are greater than staking incentives, will halt, reducing the rate at which new coins enter circulation by around 90%. The amount of energy required to keep Ethereum running should likewise decrease.
Sharding: The use of sharding, which divides verification work into smaller chunks, should allow the network to process more transactions. It may help expand network members by allowing Ethereum to function on compact devices such as phones. Sharding is not included in the merge, although it will be considered in future versions.
Gas prices & Transaction speed: According to Ethereum's website, the merger will neither result in cheaper gas prices or better transaction speeds.
Access to assets: These digital assets will be available in the same way as previously since the merge will transmit the whole transaction history.
What Altcoins Will be Affected by the Merge?
Many altcoins and altcoin exchanges are powered by the Ethereum network, so it's only fair to assume that ETH will carry a few altcoins on its back to rally. Here are the 5 crypto assets that might rally after the merge
Ethereum (ETH)
The Ethereum merge would help itself more than other crypto assets. When the Merge happens, Ethereum would be required to stake a contract in order to verify the network. This further suggests that a greater number of tokens will be restricted, hence inevitably decreasing supply. The demand would rise like never before at the same time.
Polygon (Matic)
For MATIC, the ETH merge is "Good News." The Polygon Network just published a piece in which it describes the Ethereum merger and how it would influence the network. While decreased gas prices for ETH might not be the outcome of the translation, Polygon predicted that they would be for MATIC. In addition to the lower costs, Polygon urged its users to anticipate a further rise in transaction speed by citing a potential 99.5% reduction in energy consumption.
Not just Polygon but other companies might benefit from the Merge. Polygon's zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine would also provide Ethereum improved scalability.
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
So what should investors anticipate for the price of Ethereum Classic in the days leading up to and following the Merge?
Since miners are preparing to leave the Ethereum network and switch to Ethereum Classic, the price of ETC has been rising. As the outcome of a contentious hard split in 2016, Ethereum Classic has virtually all of the technical features of the current Proof - of - work Ethereum network, making it the perfect haven for ETH miners.
Since the Ethereum Merge announcement, the price of Ethereum Classic has also increased significantly.
The price surge is thus expected to continue with the merger.
Uniswap
According to a media report, a Uniswap spokesperson stated that the firm is looking forward to the merger since it would be a step toward growing Web3 and decreasing the environmental effect of ETH.
The studio Uniswap Labs is mostly responsible for the protocol's development, and its support for the post-merge Ethereum proof-of-stake chain is crucial.
AAVE
Who hasn't heard of the Aave platform? It's a decentralised finance (DeFi) platform where users may borrow and lend crypto assets in exchange for interest. For months, the corporation has been urging ETH network users to embrace the merger. According to recent reports, the Aave DAO voted on a proposal to support PoS Ethereum. Aave will exclusively support the Ethereum Mainnet, which uses Proof of Stake consensus, above any Ethereum forks that emerge after the Merge.
