YouTube's next step in the race to beat TikTok
YouTube’s next step in the race to beat TikTok
YouTube is giving more opportunities to more creators to make money to compete with TikTok. Credit social media The Google-owned company announced at Tuesday’s “Made on YouTube” event that it is lowering barriers for creators to make money on the platform by sharing revenue in Shorts, its TikTok-like video-sharing service where videos can be up to 60. Second Long YouTube said it plans to pay…

Will Wood (and the Tapeworms) Songs as Ride the Cyclone Characters!
Recently decided to wade through Will Wood's discography more and I think some of the songs by the 30-something year old dude really embody them
How this half asleep rant will work:
[Character]: [Song(s)]
Explanation of why song is chosen
"Certain excerpts from the song I think embody the goober chosen"
Note: all songs wils be linked when they're written (mostly as youtube lyric videos), also this will probably be very long
Ocean O'Connell Rosenburg: The Main Character
Local ‘gifted kid’ teenager has yet to find out that the world doesn't revolve around her and stepping on anyone who doesn't fit in with her isn’t okay, more at 7
"I mean, imagine if protagonists just died in the first scene"
"I loot plot armor from NPC’s / Well, they are to me"
Noel Gruber: Suburbia Overture / Greetings from Mary Bell Township! / (Vampire) Culture / Love Me, Normally
This song (in my opinion) is really the embodiment of Noel's character. attempting to fit in, being told to "tone it down" by his mother until eventually arriving in the afterlife and essentially going "fuck it, we ball" with Noel's Lament (and Vampire Culture in this allegory) until eventually arriving at a state of peace with Love Me, Normally/It's Just a Ride
"a snowflake only matters in a blizzard"
Mischa Bachinski: 6up 5oh Cop-Out (Pro / Con & ¡Aikido! (Neurotic / Erotic)
6up 5oh with it's plot(?) of running from the police and proceeding to get mistreated by them is how Mischa is viewed by essentially everyone is Saskatchewan (and to an extent how he lets them see him). While ¡Aikido!, is more of his 'passion' side, specifically with Talia. The more aggressive reprise at the end of Aikido in the 2020 remaster also reminds me allot of the techno section of 'Talia'.
"It's never too late to embrace your fate"
"So we can touch instead of feel"
Ricky Potts: White Noise & Dr. Sunshine Is Dead
Imagine being so forgotten by everyone around you so the innocent bean stereotype is put on you automatically despite the fact that you’re real personality is far from that and then having a mini identity crisis over it
"You're not meant to sing along"
"I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between"
Jane Doe: Big Fat Bitchie’s Blueberry Pie, Christmas Tree, and Recreational Jell-o Emporium a.k.a. “Mr. Boy is on the Roof Again” (Feat. Pasta by Sneakers McSqueakers) [From “B.F.B.’s B-Sides: Bagel Batches, Marsh-Mallows, & Barsh-Mallows”]
No thoughts, story, or plot, just funky carnival music
Constance Blackwood: Falling Up
This song is essentially 'Sugar Cloud' but more melancholy. This is what I'd imagine a song about Constance's life before she died would be about, or Constance's Monologue in song form. What especially reminded me of her monologue was the rapid fire listing of objects and even the title 'Falling Up' being repeated in the song feeling like the roller coaster when it derailed. They're falling but being upside down it feels more like they're flying.
"You make a wish upon the dead, but turn and call it a weed"
"Much larger than life, 'cause from such height / Life looks awful small"
"Well, I cry on skies of blue linoleum, Clouds o' spilled milk"
Penny Lamb: Willard!
Aspiring animal conservationist doesn't know how to relate to "normal" people partially due to her upbringing. Parts of the song were the singer wants animal traits the make their life easier reminds me of Penny's whole "I vomit fire" thing before absolutely destroying JK-47
“Until frustration makes me wish my teeth were sharp as yours”
“I've never understood what humans do and want / It's quite confusing to me to try to connect / Never learned how I should feel, instincts somehow stunted”
Extra characters outside of the choir:
I'll go less in depth for these as i think most of these are self-explanatory
Karnak: Memento Mori: the most important thing in the world
funky sentient machine is constantly aware of his imminent death and decides to be a goofy goober because of it
Virgil: Tomcat Disposables
rat just wants to vibe and chew on a power cable. oopsies he's dead now
Monique Gibeau: White Knuckle Jerk & Front Street
oh em gee she's so gorgeous and dangerous and the world described in Noel's Lament is very gritty and a little gross
Ezra Lamb: Euthanasia (Live)
this mostly feeds into my hc that Ezra ditched school to go to the fair with the choir and had to see his sister get beheaded, being completely inconsolable, and not being listened to because he's "a kid looking for attention"
It's the end yay!!
That's the end folks! I really enjoyed making this (i am a very big fan of both rtc and will wood) there were a lot of other songs i wanted to include (skeleton appreciation day, i/me/myself etc.) but didn't because either
a. they fit too many characters for me to just pin one to them or
b. the character already had two songs assigned to them
i hope anybody reading this is having a good day/night and listens to will wood more in the future ig

[ID: An digital illustration evocative of the singing flowers in Disney's Alice In Wonderland, with airbrush shaded backgrounds but coloured line cell-shading for the main figure. The flower is a California Poppy with the face of Garfield. In pink tilted letters in the upper left corner is "March" over a turquoise hand-drawn looking font with "2024." End ID.]
Finally got an over-three-hour playlist, bits of spring means ups and downs and sad wet cat feelings along with the manic joy of the days getting longer. I've mentioned this before but every time I hear All Saints' "Love Lasts Forever" part of me thinks it is the theme song to *Highlander*. Bless my brain where there's some pop girl version of *Highlander*. Can you imagine?!
Related media to some of the songs:
The very awesome Cola Boyy died this month at 34, which is not enough years but I'm glad we were given what we did. His disco pop is a joy and his cover of 'To Be Rich Should Be a Crime' is the version that lives in my head. Here's a mini-doc over on Vimeo that came out with that single.
I stumbled across Tele Novella this month and they hit a lot of sound boxes for me. "Eggs in one Basket" has an appropriately weird video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTB-uwAd0v8)
I'd heard "Pump Up the Volume," of which Colorbox was part (primary part, for this song) before because I'm a person living in the world the years I have, but somehow hadn't encountered "The Moon Is Blue"?! One of those bands for whom things went right then fell apart. Wolfgang Tillmans did an exhibition collecting their work in a "playback room" exhibition.
I remain fond of younger folks reinterpreting the imagery and sound from my high school years and Lauran Hibberd hits that. See 2nd prettiest girl as an example.
Anyway here's a link to March's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.

LMAOOO they banned you from youtube??? sorry that you were contributing to society by blessing us with that video. it always baffles me when lost media does get leaked and the original studios get super mad about it like if the fans want it then you post it!!!
Yes, this was literally like eight years ago but I had split the video into several parts due to its length and the studio filed complaints against all of them and I got permanently banned but it was too late and the video got out.
I understand like the studio has the rights to it and I may not have been the first person to see it or post it. But I didnt know anyone who had seen it before. I definitely felt the studio was hoarding the content just because they could and were proud to have the first taped longform FOB interview, and never planned on selling or posting it.
I really like what MTV does where they have a lot of old interviews of very dubious levels of audio and video quality that I’ve never heard of or seen anywhere, and maybe this is a little crazy to say and maybe stuff was just different in 05 cause stuff is so airbrushed now, but I feel like some of them were deliberately engineered to be dark AF or look as fake as possible to act as a some kind of filter for what they can be used for or how widely they get shared. And theyre extremely difficult to access and find and download off the site but they’re still there if you’re really dedicated to researching something. I also think theyre remastering a lot of the old videos that aired on TV that have like dogshit quality now and posting them. I feel like that’s a really good way of balancing respecting the image artists want to project and the quality they want associated with their image, and also the interests of people who want these things for their cultural value or whatever
Another thing in the same vein that I think is really interesting is that radio shows like Loveline and Howard Stern are often bordering on lost media, I think because there are just insane numbers of episodes but also the content on the shows is so outrageous and cancel worthy now people dont want it out there. but also I think the studios are too lazy or theres not enough of a financial motivation to curate a backlog of their content, even one behind a paywall. Because this happens with like cleaner morning radio like Elvis Duran haha.
but there are a lot of truckers on reddit that are very dedicated to preserving the episodes of Howard Stern and Loveline and passing them around illegally, and that’s where Ive gotten a lot of longform interviews with Pete that have been incredibly beneficial to the dissertations lol. I actually paid for a SiriusXM subscription before I went to the Reddit trucker community but it didnt matter so I had to go to the Reddit Truckers for help lol
- actually —— somewhere ——————- massive “Controversy” section on Wikipedia because it’s basically like what I think Limewire was kinda and it absolutely fucking rules and I think the Fall Out Boy Joetrick Makeout Interview Heist of 2015 is a really funny and ties into that lol

What stands out as the Whump Of All Time? Only you can decide!
While you're welcome to vote for your favorite, your mutual's favorite, or on vibes alone, we encourage you to check out the propaganda and links below the cut - it's a great way to discover new content.
The inbox is open for propaganda until the poll closes!
Collapse of Nature:
(link)
"I love this story so much because I love seeing whump about Edward Elric! And I also love mpreg and this story also has that as well (which isn't anything weird btw, that element is done very tastefully). I will say that this story is not for everyone, as rape/non-con is a big theme in this fanfic. However, the emotional recovery and aftermath of said rape/non-con is also a huge theme in this story, and because such trauma is rampant in our society, I think a lot of people will appreciate how relatable that recovery process is. And if it isn't already clear from what I just said, there's a lot, A LOT, of emotional/psychological whump, as well as physical and sexual whump."
The Young Blood Chronicles (Save Rock and Roll's music videos, Fall Out Boy):
(link)
"Everyone gets bloodied, bruised, beaten up, tortured, rescued, limbs are amputated - it's brutal. Alone Together is particularly strong."

Wetrix
Tumblr media
PAL release: 29th May 1998
NA release: 16th June 1998
JP release: 27th November 1998
Developer: Zed Two
Publisher: Ocean (NA/PAL), Imagineer (JP)
N64 Magazine Score: 74%
Tumblr media
As Tetris set the standard for puzzle video games, other puzzle games try to have names similar to it. A water-based puzzle game? Of course it has to be named Wetrix. Wetrix is all about keeping water from falling off your square “island”, raiding the environment to keep it contained.
Tumblr media
Different “blocks” will fall down from the screen. Most of these are upwards arrows which will raise the land in that shape, along with water to fill up the enclosed areas you make. The goal is to keep as much water contained as possible, as if to much falls off the sides, you’ll get Game Over.
Tumblr media
There are other kinds of “blocks” as well. Down arrows will reduce the level of the land, bombs will blow up holes in the island that you’ll need to repair (on that note, don’t try to launch a bomb down a hole, the game will punish you for it), ice to freeze water and fireballs to get rid of some water.
Tumblr media
I can definitely see the appeal of Wetrix, but I really could not figure out how to do well at the game. There’s a bunch of different modes, including one where you can change settings to make the game even more difficult.
It’s not for me, but it’s a solidly made game.
Wetrix may not be the best game for the N64, but it’s certainly a better puzzle game than Tetrisphere. Had the developers Zed Two added a little more in the way of variety and incentive – like dancing pandas after 100,000 points and ‘bamboo bonuses’ if you make ’em jive – it would be a far stronger game overall.
- James Price, N64 Magazine #15
Remake or remaster?
A new version would be nice, alongside a collection of the various Wetrix games on N64, Game Boy Color, Dreamcast and PlayStation 2.
Official ways to get the game.
There is no official way to get Wetrix.

2023 ANNUAL FAVORITES
Hello! Welcome back to my annual year-end list of favorite things. I think it was actually a really strong year for new movies, music, and games, so I'm going to get to the point fairly quickly here. It was a year where I was lucky to have a good amount of time to take in new media, and I am thankful for that. Here's what I enjoyed most!
As always, any media that was widely released in the calendar year 2023 (that I personally consumed within the calendar year 2023) was eligible. This was ranked on January 1st, 2024, and remains unchanged since then (no matter what I end up thinking about it in the future.)
Favorite Films
I watched 105 movies that were widely released in 2023 this year, up from 96 in 2022. 67 of those were in a movie theater, up from 40 last year. Actually, streaming movies slipped through the cracks more this year, as I prioritized watching films in one sitting instead of in chunks during my commute to work.
It was pretty difficult to make a top twenty-five list this year, least of all to cull it down to ten, so it is with apologies to everything else that I present my favorites. By the way, if you'd like to hear me talk about these movies, give Cinema Bums a listen.
10. Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé
9. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
8. Eileen
7. How To Blow Up a Pipeline
6. Oppenheimer
5. BlackBerry
4. American Fiction
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
2. The Killer
1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Favorite Records
I feel like I listened to less records this year than I'd have liked to, but when I look at this list, I know pretty much all the words to every song on every album (and had to cut probably five others that I felt the same way about). So that's not bad!
10. KAYTRAMINÉ - Aminé and Kaytranada
9. In the End It Always Does - The Japanese House
8. the record - boygenius
7. So Much (For) Stardust - Fall Out Boy
6. The People's Champ - Quinn XCII
5. GUTS - Olivia Rodrigo
4. And the Charm - Avalon Emerson
3. Desire, I Want To Turn into You - Caroline Polachek
2. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan
1. Something To Give Each Other - Troye Sivan
Favorite Songs
As always, any song on one of my Favorite Records was not eligible to be included on my Favorite Songs list. I've probably listened to singles and playlists more than records recently, and the shortlist for this category was over a hundred songs long. That list may have contained some more adventurous cuts, but these were the ones that meant the most to me.
10. "Psychedelic Switch" - Carly Rae Jepsen
9. "Ant Pile" - Dominic Fike
8. "Coping On Unemployment" - Del Water Gap
7. "ALÉRGICA" - Paty B
6. "Even When I'm Not With You" - Pierce the Veil
5. "All Dogs Go To Hell" - Chase Rice
4. "A&W" - Lana Del Rey
3. "Outskirts" - Sam Hunt
2. "Dance the Night" - Dua Lipa
1. "Co-Star" - Amaarae
Favorite TV Shows
Probably not as great of a year for the handful of TV shows I watch as 2022 was, but I think the top three here are really good!
5. Loki (Season 2)
4. Ahsoka (Season 1)
3. Poker Face (Season 1)
2. The Last of Us (Season 1)
1. I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (Season 3)
Favorite Video Games
These are all for the Nintendo Switch. In 2024, I hope to finally play Persona 5 Royal on Switch, then finally get a Steam Deck and play Marvel's Spider-Man, and then get a Switch 2 when it comes out. Maybe those plans are kind of in conflict with my plans to spend more time writing.
5. Vampire Survivors
4. Suika Game
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
2. Metroid Prime Remastered
1. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Favorite Theater
I thought this would be fun to add as its own category this year, since I live in New York City and have somewhat okay luck at winning the lottery for shows!
5. Shucked (Broadway)
4. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Broadway)
3. Camelot (Broadway)
2. The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window (Off-Broadway)
1. Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (Off-Broadway)
Assorted Favorites
Stop Making Sense (Remastered Theatrical Run and Remastered Album)
Joe Pera: Slow and Steady (Comedy Special)
Blank Check's 8th Anniversary Live Show
"Ana Fabrega: One Hour" (Live Show)
To a T Reveal Trailer
Movie Trailers: Somebody I Used To Know, Past Lives, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Maestro
That's all for this one. Happy New Year!

Feelings on Star Wars 2023
Hey birbs I know this is coming out a bit late but I am currently prepping for my first Artist Alley as well as prepping the finale of the latest chapter in our DnD campaign. So Star Wars…at its core, they always been popcorn films to me. Something I could kill an hour and a half to watch spaceships and space wizards. But I cannot deny it’s cultural significance and how much they do mean to a lot of people. I could be considered casual normie scum on my stance when it comes to Star Wars. Heck my personal favorite films from each trilogy could be considered bad taste by the majority. I first got introduced to the franchise when my folks purchased the triple VHS set of the remastered editions waaaay back in the 90’s. Even today a lot of it still holds up thanks in part to its simplicity in its complexity as well as being a near perfect balance of creative freedom and creative constraint. With the prequels being too much creative freedom and the sequels under the thumb of too much creative restraint. When it comes to my personal favorites in from the original trilogy I’ve always liked The Return of the Jedi. Sure you could say that Empire Strikes Back had a stronger story and better character writing but Return always felt like everything had finally come together and was a satisfying conclusion to the main trio’s stories. From the prequels there’s something of a charm I’ve always found with Phantom Menace even now although Revenge of the Sith mostly hit it out of the part of the tragic fall of Anakin. Attack of the Clones I feel is the weakest one-I get what they tried to do but it’s pacing felt a bit shuffled and just didn’t really move forward to the ending that we knew was coming. And then there is the sequel trilogy. Force Awakens had a strong start even if there was a bit of stumbling-though I disagree with that it exactly copied New Hope. Sure it borrowed some of the beats with BB8’s purpose and the Starkiller but the arguments calling it one to one I disagree with. The last Jedi I am a bit mixed. A lot of my issues have to do with the pacing and focus of the story. More time should have been given to the tense relationship with Luke, Rey, and Kylo and Finn’s and Poe’s storylines needed refocusing. I got what they were trying to do-but boy did they not handle it well. As for Rise of Skywalker-there is a lot I did like about it but in retrospect it was kinda running on panic mode-not that it really ruined my personal enjoyment. Fun story-so when my family and  went to see it in the theatre after the previews…a jungle scene started playing from the other film that was being shown in that duplex and everyone in the theatre started panicking and running to the other showroom before seeing it was the same film and we ran back. I think it was Jumanji. But back to the topic at hand yeah it should have been called Rise of Palpatine so the name could have played a double meaning. Yeah, Rey should have taken the Palpatine name not the Skywalker name.
I won’t deny the they have issues nor that Disney has not handled the PR too well in regards to the criticism of them. While the prequels were able to redeem themselves with the Clone Wars (both of them) and Rebels-the sequels haven’t been given that much of a chance to. Though it is amusing that LEGO of all people seem to understand the material better and have done pretty good with what they had.
When it comes to the sequels the concepts were not bad-it was more the execution that was mishandled. If you’re like me who likes long term videos to play in the background, I highly recommend Channel Awesomes’s Fanscription episode in the rewrite. I don’t agree with all of their ideas but it shows the seriously missed potential that was there. And that’s a real bad shame all things considered and sometimes I feel like these ideas were given another chance to shine-but years down the line when the IP has been allowed to simmer down for a bit. I know that won’t happen in the current state of things, but one can dream huh?
And I do get the fans anger. I really do. If you asked me about the Digimon Adventure saga I could go at lengths how much I dislike Adventure Tri. How it clearly felt like it was done who only had vague ideas of what Adventure was, the pacing was awful, the characters were mishandled, and the new characters they tried to have us like just really did not hit it for me, and the misuse of fanservice… *sigh* Buuuut I also acknowledge that there are people who like Tri and while I disagree with them, I respect their feelings as long as they respect mine. When it comes to fandoms in general, I’ve always followed a general rule: fans should be able to like different aspects of a franchise without being attacked or attacking others-something the other side also has a serious problem with. At the same time, I do feel for people who like Disney Star Wars but can’t express that without backlash even if they are not attacking anyone. Do I agree that Disney has made some pretty dumb decisions with Star Wars? Yes. Do I think they are overusing the IP? Yes! And while we don’t have a lot of information about the three feature films coming out in the next couple years is really not a good idea at this time. Disney, you can’t be this dense. Even while I can empathize on both sides, there is so much gatekeeping negative mentality one can take. And that is because there has been good stuff that has come out even if they are technically under the Disney banner. Freemaker Adventures, Mandalorian, Andor, Legends, Fallen Order, Rise of the Resistance, Close Wars season 7, the new Lego holiday specials, Jedi Survivor…when the right people are given the reigns and let to do their thing there are some really fun and meaningful media that have come from them. Am I bit more cautiously optimistic these days? Sure, but it’s not good for anyone to stew on the bad aspects of a franchise. And the oversaturation does not help things either. There has to be a balance. But I’m also one nobody birb on the internet so I guess I just enjoy the things my way. I promise I’ll be more positive next round. I’m Noctina Noir-and take to the skies.

[Main image description: An edited image of Elvira grinning in delight while a skeleton whispers into her ear. Elvira's face has been replaced with Garfield, keeping the hair, and her hand is now his paw. Her decolletage remains intact and is Garfield orange.]
Yay October! A month of many things, isn't it. But one of the things has to be a little spooky, just for vibes. Where we live the Santa Anas have blown in and it is dry as anything, and a perfect low 80s during the day to 70s at sunset (and it'll be VERY cold at night). It is fun, on our family discord, seeing folks share their snowy Halloweens.
Related media to some of the songs:
'The Rythmn of the Night' is beloved to me for multiple reasons but also for this perfect moment from a DJ.
I feel like I've been looking for the music videos I remember from back when you had basic cable and sometimes got free Disney for a week to entice you to subscribe (and my family spent it recording everything they could). They were pop songs, with videos that were just semi-related clips edited together into music videos. I only ever saw them individually, but apparently they're from DTV Monster Hits, which is available with commercials over on Archive.org. The Eurythmic's 'Sweet Dreams' is one of the videos I remember the most (it's the final number).
Speaking of seasonal music, Duran Duran has a new charming album out, Danse Macabre, and it's a fun mix of covers and new songs that is very much a Halloween party album.
Anyway here's a link to October's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.

~chases baby goths with a broom while yelling 'scat!' at them~
It's because I'm the same age as the French robots and a couple of Backstreet Boys. Anyone born this century is a baby to me. If I can remember what I was doing when you were born, you're a baby.
Still doesn't mean I'm not looking for a found family, especially a member who can drive, to leave my worldly goods, knowledge, and user names to.
I have depressive memories older than Papa Filth. I was considering ways to unalive myself before he was a teenager.
You want stuff that's so goth?
You know there's a place you've walked where the love falls from the trees/My heart is like a broken cup only feel right on my knees/I spit out like a sewer hole and still receive your kiss/How can I measure up to anyone now after such a love as this?
Well who are you?
Yeah, that's the 'lost verse' from Who Are You by The Who, the version they do live. And since a remastered vinyl of Tommy is coming out get yourself Cousin Kevin if you want some real punk.
Really, guys, the only reason the 1988 live anniversary performance of Tommy is allowed to exist is Billy Idol as Cousin Kevin.
I'd play the original Ohio Players version of Love Rollercoaster at you Ghost kids but it sounds too much like one of their songs. So does that AJ McLean one Teenage Wildlife. There's a pole dancing white cat furry in that video who I want to believe is JC Chasez and no one can tell me different.
I can admire Ghost and the world building and the playing pretend but it's not the ___ing or ___ of music for me. I'm gonna poke around a bit, enjoy myself, try and tell the songs apart, let you kids have your fun.
I'm not the person who tells you not to read evil books, I'm the one who wants a report on them so I know you comprehended what you read and it's societal impact.
Keep your Ouija boards clean.
