Fanfic ask game (shh its only 2 days late🙈) I'm doing several feel free to ignore the ones you don't like!
😍
🤡
💥
[ the brain my phone is old and doesnt have that emoji..]
fanfic emoji asks!
thank you for answering! this turned out to be a long one ahah, so i'm putting my answers below the cut so i won't clog up folks' dashes!
🤡 what's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh? shit that's actually a very good question, and i don't think anything's like outright made me laugh, but there's been a couple of exchanges that have put a smile on my face, the first being this;
Grace groaned. “We’re in Hawaii , Danno. Have you even seen any houses around here that come closer to that dream than this? Steve, we can turn Danno’s white-picket-fence dream into a nice, beach-front dream instead, right?”
“That would have to be Danno’s decision when it comes down to it, but,” Steve shrugged innocently, noticing how Danny’s eyes narrowed as he glanced between him and Grace. “Who could ever complain about a nice beach-front dream?”
the second being a scene between steve and mary in an ongoing wip of mine, where she interrogates him about what's gone on his life since she saw him last (and why he suddenly shows up at her door, without calling first)
(for the next question i couldn't find the 😍 emoji on the list, but i'm taking a wild guess at which it may have been eheh – but let me know if there's anything else you want me to answer!)
🥺 is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels? steve and danny's kids. specifically steve and charlie, always.
exhibit a (from a wip that's coming soon): Danny spent the first two hours on the flight asleep, stuck in the aisle-seat, but he didn’t mind. Not when he had Steve on his left, and Charlie by the window. When he’d fallen asleep, they were talking about planes, and Steve was answering every question Charlie had as best he could, from the more general things about planes, to more technical things that was specific to the exact airliner they were on (which Danny came to learn was a Boeing 737-900, which had been introduced in 1997). When he woke, they were hunched together, Steve sleeping, an arm around Charlie, who was watching a cartoon on a device Danny didn’t recognise right away – because it was Steve’s phone.
🧠 pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them. i'll give you my favourite headcanon for steve, and my favourite headcanon for danny – and if you want anything for anyone else, let me know!
steve: i'm a firm believer that steve has a bone frog tattoo in memory of freddie. it's located on his thigh, a well measured distance above his knee; that way he can always keep it 'hidden' underneath his shorts, etc., and there's only a very few people who knows about it (the tattooartist, cath, danny, nurses and doctors). i believe he planned it from the day he returned to hawaii after the op, but he didn't actually get it done until after he and cath had gone to make sure freddie made it home.
danny: the tim bradford incident. i mean, come on. danny as a beat cop in new jersey, looking all dapper in his uniform. one night he's out patrolling, when he gets dispatched to a party. it's a neighbour calling it in, saying it's disturbing their nightly peace. danny shows up, knocks on the door, and is immediately pulled inside to a wild cheering. cut to a few minutes later when he emerges, uniform torn, and a tipsy party-goer following behind apologising that they thought he was a stripper. because again, danny in his uniform? i could see that happening.
💥 how do you feel about criticism? i'm open for criticism! i think that, as long as the criticism is delivered in a respectful tone, there's no issue. there have been instances where i've received unpleasant direct messages, that can't accept. but personally, i feel like criticism is something that can help me grow, whether it be through writing or photography, or elsewhere in life. so yeah, i have no issue with receiving criticism if the criticism is given in a respectful way!

I'll ask after that secret number 8!
I only remembered secret number 8 because I saw your wip here! I'd started this one based on the same prompt, then lost said prompt and stopped working on it 😅
Instead of a snippet, I'm just dropping it all here - maybe that way I'll feel inspired to finish it?
———
It’s a full house for dinner tonight and, really, that should have tipped him off.
Bruce sits at the head of the table, smiling softly as he watches over everyone’s antics. Damian is regaling Dick with everything they saw at the zoo that day (Danny had been so happy to see Delilah the purpleback gorilla again, and her new little additions to the troupe, too!) and how well they are implementing the grant the Wayne Foundation had gifted them. Tim, Steph, Cass, and Duke are all engaged in a thumb-war tournament which Danny has no interest in participating in. It just wouldn’t be fair on them.
Danny loves that look. The one where Bruce’s eyes crinkle when he thinks none of the kids can see him. It oozes love and it makes Danny’s heart, his core, ache.
It’s been a little over a year since Alfred found him on the street and managed to wrangle him back to the manor to stay—even after the whole biting thing when he realised how rich they were.
A little over a year here and Danny’s starting to feel like family.
Starting to feel like he might, just maybe, like to make it official.
“Danny,” Bruce says, drawing everyone’s attention. Danny starts at his name, but Bruce’s voice is warm and calm, and his shoulders lose their tension almost immediately. “Danny, I have something I would like to tell you.”
“Uhhh…” is all Danny can croak out, eyes flicking back and forth between Bruce and the rest of them. Smooth. Looking good, Danny.
Except… they’re all happy. All smiles, all relaxed body language, all radiating calm and love and acceptance. Well, not Damian—his face is as thunderous as it always is—which at least means it’s nothing too out of the ordinary.
“Danny, first of all, I just want to impress upon you that this is in no way something you have to do. You are under no obligation to join us and, no matter what, you shall always be welcome with us in the manor.”
Wait, what? Danny squints at Bruce, trying to parse exactly what he’s saying… Is he—is this them asking to adopt him? Do they want to make it official, too?
It’s been a little over a year and of course Danny has imagined calling Bruce ‘Dad’. Of course he’s imagined being part of the family, of course he wants to make it official!
He can’t help the beaming grin or the bright and bubbling “Yes!” already waiting on his lips. All Bruce has to do is ask, all Danny needs to hear is—
“I’m Batman.”
The smile freezes on Danny’s face.
His lungs stop working, his heart stops working, he stops working, he just—
“And I’m Nightwing,” Dick smiles, breaking the awkward silence.
Danny’s eyes snap to him, and then down to Tim when he admits to being Red Robin. Duke is Signal, Steph is Spoiler. Damian begrudgingly tells him he’s Robin, but Danny can barely hear it over the ringing in his ears.
“I’m Black Bat.” Cass cocks her head, almost looking concerned. It always felt like she understood him the most. Whenever he was feeling low, too in his memories, or stewing after a nightmare, she was always there, ready to card her fingers through his hair and never mention his tears. It makes his heart ache to think of it now. “It’s okay, Danny.”
It’s meant to be reassuring, but how—how can it be okay? How?
Danny’s spent a little over a year with them. A little over a year with Batman.
Batman, who works with the Justice League, who works with…
A little over a year.
Just under 16 months since he escaped.
“Danny? Are you alright?” Bruce asks
Finally, his lungs kickstart and suck in a shuddering breath, only for everyone to drop their smiles.
Didn’t take them long, did it? Now that their ruse is up, there’s no kindness in their eyes, they’re just… cold, calculating. Evaluating.
“Why?” Danny gasps, his fingers tingling, his heart in his throat.
Just under 16 months since he—has he escaped? Or was this just another one of their experiments?
"I... I trusted you, why—" Danny chokes back a sob, gritting his teeth as his shoulders shake. Why? Why would they do this? "I was happy here, with you. I thought... Weren't you happy?"
"Danny..." Bruce is looking at him, eyes narrow and eyebrows pinched, in some cruel facsimile of confused concern and all Danny can think is how much of an actor he is. How well he can play the part of a doting father. How much he made him want that.
"I don't understand, why..."
"I'm sorry we didn't tell you before, I can imagine that it comes as a shock. We shouldn't have lied to you, Danny, but—"
"Stop it!" Danny slams his hands down on the table and pushes himself up on wobbly legs. Even standing, he feels so small. Smaller than Bruce, than all of his adopted siblings. They crowd above him when they all stand, too. "Just stop it! Why are you doing this, why are you still pretending? Stop it!"
It was easier, with Danny's biological parents. The knowledge that they'd do anything to get him on a lab table, to open him up and see what makes him tick, to rip him apart molecule by molecule, had always been there. He knew they hated ghosts. He knew they hated Phantom. He knew they hated him. It was easier because it was something he'd known all his life. When he died, when he became a ghost, he knew what to expect from them. It hurt, of course it did.
But it was easier than this.
"Danny, I'm going to need you to take a deep breath. You're having a panic attack and you need to breathe."
"Breathe?" Danny laughs, the sound harsh and choking, too high pitched in his hysteria. "You're joking, right? Or is this just more of the—the experiment?"
"Danny, please, we don't know what you're talking about, you—"
"You don't know? You're Batman! You work with the Justice League, you work with—" His words choke off as his stomach churns, bile rising in his throat. His whole body itches, screaming at him to leave, he can't go back, he can't, he can't, he can't!
Bruce takes a hesitant step forward and Danny scrambles back, his feet catching on the chair behind him and sending him careening to the floor. Where are the agents? Why aren't they swarming in, ready to apprehend him, strap him back on the table, carve him from the inside out.
"Please, Danny, calm down. We don't—"
Danny stops listening. His back hits the wall and he pulls his knees into his chest, his shoulders dipping down as he begins to sob. His heart throbs inside his throat, too painful to swallow around. Tears fall hot and heavy on his face.
Sure, he could run. He could phase out through the wall and he could be out of Gotham in a couple of hours. He's escaped the GIW once, he can do it again.
But that was before Batman knew who he was. Before he had the World's Greatest Detective on his tail.
Before he...
He really thought this would be different, you know?
He wanted to make it official.
"Why did... Why were you so nice to me? Why did you make me like you? I really—I really liked you. I-I thought we could be a family."
"Danny, we are a—"
"Don't lie to me!" Danny snaps, but the force of his anger leeches all the fight from him, and suddenly all that's left is a bone-weary tiredness. There’s a lump in his throat that hurts. There’s a line down his chest that burns. "I don't care. I don't care anymore, I don't. Just... don't make me go back there. Please."
Is it futile? He thought he knew how the GIW operated by now, the depths that they would go to achieve their results, but this... this was a whole new level of pain that Danny thought he had left behind him in Amity.
"We're not going to make you go anywhere, Danny, you're safe here, I promise."
"Safe? Safe? You must have—" he takes a deep breath, tries to stop the quivering of his voice. It’s all starting to make sense, now.  "The reason you're telling me who you are is because you must have told them everything already. I know the Justice League—I know you're working with them, which means the ex-experiment is over now, and they're coming to take me back. And I can't go back."
"Danny—"
"I can’t!” Danny glares at Bruce with all the rage he can, fingernails digging into his skin. “I’m not going back!"
"That's right, you're not going back, Danny. I won't let that happen." Bruce crouches down in front of Danny, his hands open and raised as if he's trying to say he's not a threat. "I don't know who you're talking about, and I'm sorry about that, but I can promise you that you’re not going back there. We will keep you safe."
Danny pulls himself closer, tucks himself further into the wall, eyes flickering all across the room waiting for that tell-tale flash of white as the agents start to swarm.
He should take his chances now and run, he should go, he needs to go!
The rest of them, his brothers and sisters of a little over a year, are spread out, giving him and Bruce some space. The same concern colours all of their faces. Why are they still pretending?
Steph is chewing on her thumb.
Danny liked Steph and her brash confidence, her jokes. She's been promising to paint his nails for months now, they've just never found the time. He was going to go for green and black, or maybe a galaxy theme, depending on what she felt comfortable doing.
He likes them all.
"You were supposed to be my family." His mouth turns down at the corners and his voice shakes like a child. "You were supposed to—why? Why would you—I don't understand why you would make me like you..."
"This isn't an experiment, Danny," Bruce's voice is steady, soothing. "I promise."
"But you work with them and—"
"Who do I work with?"
"The Justice League."
"Yes, I do, but we—"
"And the Justice League works with them. The GIW." Danny trembles with the name, clutching tightly onto his hoodie. "I'm not going back there, Bruce."
Danny doesn't miss Bruce's look over his shoulder, nor Tim's nod in return. Tim turns slightly to the side to hide his movements, but Danny bets he has his phone in his hand, probably letting them know they can take him now. Guess this is it, then. They'll be here soon, and he'll be gone.
"Kill me."
"Danny? What do—"
"If you ever had any kindness for me, if you ever cared, kill me. Please, Bruce. I can't do it again."
"Danny..."
"End me now. Take my core out and break it, please, before they get here."

Y’all, y’all, I know this is (among many, many other things) the talk-about-your-fanfics site but I physically cannot talk about them without being prompted. However, because I am dying to talk about them, I have decided to do it in the format of an ask game.
What story (stories?) are you writing rn that you’ll most likely publish next? ∩(´∀`∩)
What story (stories?) are you writing rn that will most likely linger in your head for an undetermined period of time? (*´▽`*)
What tropes do you like writing about the most? (´▽`ʃƪ)
Lore dump about the OCs (see tags for options)! (∩˃o˂∩)
One individual fun fact for each OC in the tags. ヽ(‘ ∇‘ )ノ
Longest fic you’ve written (published or not)? ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
Shortest fic you’ve written (published or not)? ‹•.•›
Fic that is near and dear to your heart? ♡
Top three fics you’ve written (in author’s opinion)? ♡♡♡
Story Moodboard of choice (either you or author picks the story; author makes). (◡‿◡✿)
OC Moodboard of choice (either you or author picks the OC; author makes). ❀☉‿☉❀
Write another line in your WIP (rude, productive, but okay). ◔̯◔
Drop a playlist for a story! ♪♡♪
Umm… yeah, so feel free to reblog to use the ask game yourself!! Fingers crossed all those nervous writers get to lore dump, yeah?

fanfic drabble emoji game
Have a double drabble instead! 💖
"Stephen?"
Stephen looks up at Tony, noting his slightly dazed look. "What is it?"
"I'm gonna be honest with you," Tony starts, "So I saw this… whole bunch of glowing mushrooms back there in your garden room thing–"
"Don't tell me you ate them."
There's an almost comical pause.
"I ate them."
"Shit."
"Yep. They tasted like shit," Tony admitted, "I feel a little... weird. Strange, even."
Stephen glares at him.
"I'm starting to... Starting to think... Do you think I was a fish in another life? I'm pretty sure I'm a fish in another life."
Stephen blinks. That's the most out-of-pocket thing he's heard from someone who's high off of magical mushrooms.
"Do you think I'm more like a goldfish or like… a coelacanth?" Tony continues, completely derailing from the reason this conversation started. "I like coelacanths. They're really cool. Did you know that they thought coelacanths were extinct until one day some dude found it just chillin' around in like, South Africa, and it just went," he pitches his voice lower, "'Hey there, bitches! I'm a-fucking-live!'"
Stephen sighs. "Definitely a coelacanth."
"You think so?"
Stephen nods.
"They have tiny brains."
He stands up and walks over to Tony.

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
What an excellent fucking question that I feel a LOT of pressure to answer well!
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
Write what you want to write. This is probably something that sounds obvious, but I think it's easy to fall into the trap of writing what you think people want to read. And it's a very understandable impulse (god knows I do it lol) but when you're starting out I think there's a lot of value in writing the tropes/characters/pairings/whatever that YOU vibe with the most.
Tropes are tropes for a reason. Do not fall into the trap of "oh, I shouldn't write a soulmate fic/there was only one bed/a coffee shop AU because lots of those already exist in this fandom". They exist because people LOVE THEM and are always keen for more cake.
Make friends! Join a discord server, drag your irl friends into fandom, whatever works for you. Fandom is a wonderful, collaborative space and I can't imagine doing it on my own.
Everything's made up and the points don't matter. And by 'the points' I mean kudos/hits/etc. And I'll be the first to admit that this is not advice I'm good at taking for myself 🤣 but I know for a FACT that some of the fics I've worked the hardest on and poured the most of myself into are the ones that have gotten less attention. There are some incredible hidden gems I've found when joining a new fandom with fuckall kudos that are absolutely amazing. Please, please don't get demoralised. Keep writing. ❤️

🧐🦅📚 fanfic emojis
fanfic writer emoji asks!
🧐 -> do you spend much time researching for your stories? of course it depends on what i'm writing about, but generally yes. over all, i spend more time researching for a fic than actually writing it!
🦅 -> do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants? flying by the seat of my pants is the only way i know how to do things. i've also come to the conclusion that the few times i get an idea and think "i should outline this before i start writing!" then i can scrap the thing right away, because statistics say my inspiration will be gone before the outline is done–
📚 -> would you ever want to turn writing into a career? looks to my job as a journalist; actually, no. not creative writing, anyway. for me, creative writing is a "get away" and i tend to struggle drawing a line between work and personal life, so if i turned creative writing into a career, i genuinely fear i would drive myself mad. journalistic writing however, that's something else!
thank you for asking!

If you feel down with this amount of comments and feedback, then I should probably kill myself :-( Sorry, I don't mean to be mean.
You are one of the most popular authors I know. I am so jealous of the amount of comments you get. Does the anxiety and self-doubt never get better when even you feel like this?
It’s not mean at all.
I get what you are referring to. To be clear I wasn’t necessarily feeling down in this instance because of lack of feedback – but there are some WIPs I’m struggling with, and some sections I wrote I didn’t like as much as others, and I was feeling a bit down. It’s normal, I think.
But I still compare myself to others. Everyone does.
I’ve had so many conversations with writer and artist friends these past weeks about exactly that type of struggle.
Let me get into more depth under the cut.
There are writers who have followings in the thousands and/or write for larger fandoms/ships who struggle with feeling good about their work literally as much as people just starting out, even if their posts have hundreds or thousands of notes. They would say "I get less notes and it's frustrating" and I check their posts and I would go "....those are amouns of notes I can only dream of" lmao. Which doesn't mean they don't struggle! It simply means we have different measures. Different reference points.
There are writers who barely get any comments, or any feedback, who feel completely discouraged. Wondering why they don't get the attention that others are getting.
There are writers who do well with one particular type of content, or they throw stuff out quickly as a joke, and that outperforms the things they pour their heart and soul into. They feel caged. Like what they truly care about isn't good enough. For me one example is an Emperor oneshot that outperforms many of my personal favorite fics. It boggles the mind?! But it's no use wrecking my mind about that. It just is.
Almost all writers I know get super discouraged about how artists get multiple times the reblogs and attention that fic writers get, even though we all know rationally why. It still hurts.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't comparing myself to others. I do. I get jealous. I get insecure. I do occasionally think my writing is not "good enough".
To this day I barely read other Gortash or Raph fics for that reason because early on I did that and once read a Gorty fic that I thought was so good, why would I ever write Gortash myself? Like what business would I have putting something out, if writers like that exist? Imagine if I hadn't forced myself out of that slump. Most of my writing would have never seen the light of day.
It's not good to compare myself, I know. But it's human.
Sometimes people send asks like yours and insinuate I'm super popular. But then.... I... don't think so?
Don't get me wrong, I have this amazing community in my comments and I am so grateful for them. I know that is rare and I am so appreciative of that. I know that I have quite a good chunk of fics that do really well on AO3, especially for Tavtash. But if you then check out.... Astarion fics? Or literally any blog that does Durgetash headcanons? It puts things into perspective.
Ultimately it doesn't matter of course to know that "popular" authors like me (??? it just feels so weird to say! I'm sorry! Not to be mean!) also get insecure.
But maybe it is reassuring to know that the anxiety, or jealousy, or self-doubt doesn't say anything about you other than that you care about your writing.
Because at the heart of it, that's that. We all create because we love creating. We share it, because we seek to go into community with others. Only when people share our writing, or comment, or feedback, do we get to feel that community. Without it, it feels hollow. And this hollowness then gets filled with jealousy, anxiety, or self-doubt. This is why I keep repeating that thing about people needing to reblog fics. Needing to comment on fics. It might just be the one thing that keeps someone going.
I hope you know that popularity, comments, hits, don't necessarily say something about the work, other than that it fits what a fandom-cultural norm considers "good" at that given time.
I am more than ever motivated to create that Discord server for fic writers to have exactly these types of conversations.
Thanks for sending me the comment. I hope you keep writing and creating and you know that these emotions are human.
Sending you love anon!

wip ask game
In a new post, list the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
thank you, @ninadove 🕊️ at first i wasn't going to do this because i am pretty sure i have several hundred incomplete works, but you know what, not all incomplete works are works in progress. they're unfinished but i'm done with them... i wrote the fun parts and i got what i wanted... bye bye petits papillons.

"What, in the name of Jesus H Christ," Tony says in a shriek, "is that?"
Stephen peeks out an eye at Tony, still maintaining his meditation position. He closes it back.
"It's called a third eye."
"What the fuck do you even need a third eye for?"
"To look at things invisible to the naked eye."
"Why is it open? What are you looking at?"
"It opens when I'm meditating, sometimes. I still haven't found a way to control it."
Tony was quiet for a moment.
"Not gonna lie, I kinda dig it," he says, "Hot."
The cloak swats him.
