Didn't think I'd have the time but got my entry for the refugium creature contest done! Down to the wire as usual. More info on the life cycle found below!

I wanted to do a fun Squilloid line, but as fun belly worms! The life cycle is the host eats the eggs which hatch inside the digestive tract, once there the young attack each other and any other parasites they find. They 'eat' through absorption through their tails so their mouth parts are only for clearing out their living space, as a result most hosts generally feel a lot better once they are infected. The fools!

Once the role of top worm has been decided, the individuals morphs into the feeding stage of their lifecycle. Their tail sprouts a multitude of fringes to aid in absorbing food and gas exchange, while the mouth parts remain for dealing with any would be room mates! This stage of their life is by far the longest, lasting decades.

The burrowing phase is where the fun begins, this sub adult form can be brought about by age, stress, or most commonly lack of space within the host. In this phase they begin swelling grotesquely and once they reach maximum size, turn their mouth upon their host. They chew their way out to the surface, sometimes resulting in death, sometimes not! But they only stop once they are able to smell open air and then settle in to begin their final metamorphosis.

The dispersal phase adults only live for a few days, climbing out of the wound created in their host to fly off and find suitable places to lay their eggs. If their host died during the last phase they will generally lay their eggs onto the body, but some are always out looking to lay a trap for the next poor unsuspecting creature.

The basic dumb answer would probably be cats (I think he like actually goes insane whenever he sees poptart he loves that cat so unbelievably much)

but if we’re talking specifics, for the other favorite Im gonna say the emerald cockroach wasp (he would pull one of them weird cards when it comes to animals like huehuehue they’ll never guess this one)

As to why,

The wasp itself is just very pretty, it’s also called a jewel wasp cuz of how shiny and colorful they are

It’s a parasitic wasp, which is both absolutely disturbing to look into but very interesting

The cool thing about his particular parasitic wasp is what it does in comparison to other parasitic wasps. They go specifically for cockroaches, and almost surgically sting its brain. They don’t kill the cockroaches and make it much more docile, so it isn’t tweaking tf out. Then it creates a little tucked away hold for it, lays an egg on the cockroach, and closes the entrance. The cockroach just kinda chills there until the egg hatches then it’s life gets significantly worse because the larvae eat it from the inside out, non-important to vital organs so it stays alive for the longest amount of time. Then the full grown wasp hatches from the empty cockroach shell isn’t that just wonderful

Not saying he would ever want a jewel wasp or anything, I just think he would find them really interesting and pretty because LOOK AT THEM they are so pretty and they are so awful it’s COOL

The jewel wasp was actually one of the wasps that inspired the way xenomorphs function in the alien franchise too!!

Definitely not biased as to why I chose it for him at all.

reading the screenplay, i’ve noticed that when lawrence feels powerless or cornered in reaction to adam’s actions or words, he lashes out specifically by targeting adam’s vulnerabilities.

adam explains he wanted to become a vet but was discouraged by the school requirements, and in fact reveals he never finished high school (not explicit, only implied, right before he pivots to a distraction and talks about the corpse not having future prospects, to crack a joke), but lawrence does try to comfort him by telling him "it's never too late" to instill a bit of hope in adam. and then he becomes suspicious of adam's avoidant fidgeting with the photo over the edge of the tub, he feels powerless and he re-asserts that power by targeting a vulnerability. he picks on adam's intelligence. he calls him stupid.

similarly (and, although this is strictly part of solving this puzzle, i'm sure lawrence does experience some sympathy here), lawrence decides to ask adam why the tape referenced adam wanting to die. he asks him why he felt suicidal. adam once again seems reluctant to explicitly explain himself. instead, he continues using implication to avoid directly addressing his vulnerability, which is almost like painting a target around the big, soft, weak spot in the center of his references to his sensitivities, something that lawrence zeros in on each time he lashes out at adam. once again, adam tells lawrence he feels worthless (in so many words) and lawrence, angry about what he's learned about adam's covert documentation of his infidelity, calls him worthless (in so many words). a gutterfeeder, a bottomfeeder.

when he's cornered, lawrence resorts to wounding him, perhaps because he wants to have control over the situation and he wants adam to know he's in control.

and of course adam wants for larry to be the calm one, the one who knows what he's doing (because he sure isn't), he wants him to get both of them out. even despite adam's own outbursts. when he says, "fuck thinking, don't you wanna scream?!" it's almost like he's testing how stable lawrence is. this guy he knows he was tasked with stalking and photographing, who has a stern and calm and resolute demeanor, something he's already latched onto ("despite himself, lawrence's stern, even tone has the effect of settling adam a little," "are you alright?" "are you injured?" "what's your name?"). something adam is aware enough of to protect when he hides the hostage photo of larry's wife and daughter. not only because he still holds suspicion of lawrence's role in this ordeal or his motives, but because he can't lose that stability lawrence provides him.

the way that these two trust and distrust, the way that their codependency relies on a dynamic of protecting and soothing, it just drives me fucking insane.
