What Do Cops Do?

I spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to excerpt from this essay on Alex Pareene’s substack, but in the end I think I have to just post the whole goddamn thing:

Lots of very smart (and even more not-so-smart) people have tried, over the years, to answer the question of what cops are for—whether they exist to keep us safe, to fight crime, to protect property, to enforce racial hierarchies, etc. I pose a simpler question: What do cops do?

Having spent many years observing cop behavior, reading news about cops, and occasionally even asking them for help, I have come to a pretty simple but comprehensive answer: They do what is easy, and avoid what is difficult. Seen through that rubric, much cop behavior suddenly becomes much more explicable.

Of all the improbable things about accused subway shooter Frank James’s last hours of freedom, the weirdest is how easy it is to imagine James still on the run, today, if he’d decided to do almost anything differently. Learning that he phoned in a tip on himself from a McDonald’s, and then that he eventually got tired of waiting there and left, was a sort of sublime punchline to the entire comic manhunt, in which New York City’s enormous and well-funded police department failed at basically every moment to stop or capture a dangerous criminal who literally told them where he was. Then, a few weeks later, another guy shot and killed a person on the Q. The shooter did so at what I’d consider, strategically, the worst time and place to kill someone on the Q: while it crossed the Manhattan Bridge, giving everyone on board both the time and ability to phone the police and have them ready to apprehend him the moment the train arrived in Manhattan. But when the train pulled into Manhattan, rest assured, the police were (according to one unconfirmed eyewitness) on the wrong platform. That shooter might still be on the lam, too, if he hadn’t turned himself in, an act the city authorities and a fame-seeking pastor with connections to the mayor apparently almost sabotaged.

In between those two shootings, and also before and after them, the NYPD busied itself with clearing homeless encampments. In the denouement to the subway shooting fiasco, the police arrested the panhandler into whose cup the second shooter deposited his gun, for illegal firearms possession. This is my thesis in action: It is difficult to prevent a random shooting. It is difficult to find a gunman. It is difficult to arrest an armed man. It is very easy to arrest an unhoused person.

Alexander Sammon just wrote a piece for the Prospect asking why the police are so bad at their jobs, based on their dismal “clearance” (arrests) rates and even more dismal conviction rates. The semi-glib leftist response is that they aren’t. They’re doing exactly what we pay them for. But even judged by their own cruel standards the police are extraordinarily lazy and incompetent. A study summarized by sociologist Brendan Beck in Slate earlier this year made a convincing case that more officers were associated mainly with more misdemeanor arrests. That is, the unimportant shit. It is nice to imagine that additional police spending will go to an army of Columbos solving the trickiest crimes. We are currently doing this experiment, with the real police, in real life, and it is proving that they are spending the money on throwing the belongings of homeless people into dumpsters.

It is easier to arrest a child for stealing chips than it is to apprehend an armed adult shooter. It is easier for several dozen police officers to arrest two unarmed people than it is for a cop to stop any single armed person. It is easier for hundreds of cops to kettle a largely unarmed left-wing protest than it is for an entire department to stop any armed right-wingers from entering a government building. It’s easier to clear homeless encampments than it is to investigate sexual assault. It’s easier to coerce confessions than it is to solve crimes. It’s easier to try to pull a guy over than it is to offer any sort of help when he crashes his car. It’s easier to arrest a mango vendor in the subway than to stop someone from bringing a gun into the subway. It’s easier to arrest a fifth grader than it is to save one’s life.

It is far easier to do “crowd control”—to restrain a panicking parent, perhaps—than it is to enter a room currently occupied by a psycho with a semiautomatic rifle.

Bill Lawrence's involvement lessened every season and it fuckin' shows

There were arcs and plot points established over the first two seasons that the writers very obviously just changed their minds about for this season

Takes about this season being dark/ending sad on purpose are MUCH too generous. like giving WAY too much credit.

It turns out most of my feelings boil down to "it's not aggressively bad it's just nonsensical"

How tf was every episode twice as long as in previous seasons but everything important happened offscreen

FIRST OF ALL, since MONTHS before the season started airing, I've nursed a conspiracy theory that Bill Lawrence left the show because of creative differences with Jason Sudeikis and that therefore this season would be significantly less good than previous seasons. This started when I saw Bill tweet that he was going home, basically, and I figured we'd get "season 3 is in post" news shortly thereafter but instead there was that weird stuff about things being delayed because of rewrites...? Anyway, that is mostly to say that I was ready to think this season was worse because I love Bill Lawrence's storytelling and have forever and you should give Cougar Town a shot if you haven't yet it's no Scrubs but it's sweet

There were interviews early in the show in which I swear Jason/Brendan/whoever said they pitched the show to Bill because he's fuckin' good at TV and he basically said "this is a great idea but you're writing to the wrong ending, it should be this," and they were like "wow you're right that is a better ending." I can't find that now but I did find this from a more recent Bill interview:

I ran that show the first year because Jason was still shooting movies while we were doing the writers room. Then, at the end of that year, much like Gary with me, I was like, “Ah, I’ll spend a couple of months teaching him how to edit.” But after like a day or two, he’s like, “Yeah, I got it.” (Laughs.) So, the second year, we ran it together, and I’m only able to do other things now because that guy ran the show himself the third year, as it should be. It’s his voice and his world this season.

Now look, Bill Lawrence is obviously not trying to throw shade here because he's lovely and also this is a Hollywood Reporter article and how immature would that be, but I can throw shade for him and I will: Jason Sudeikis is a talented comedic actor and seems like a very nice man and he had a good idea for a show, and his instincts to involve an extremely experienced showrunner with an insane talent for feelsy found family sitcoms were good and he should have stuck to them!! Telling Bill Lawrence you're good after two days of editing instruction or whatever is stupid!! Insisting on your voice and your world when BILL LAWRENCE'S VOICE IS AVAILABLE TO YOU and also you CO-CREATED THE WORLD whatever gdi

OK fine I'll do Ted/Rebecca next. Obviously I was in for Ted/Rebecca. I wanted them to put their faces together. But look, I'm not a shipper over all else; over all else I want a good storyteller to tell me the story they want to tell. If I expect things or see them coming, that's not bad! That's good! If I'm surprised by things, that's good too as long as it holds together! "Subverting expectations" shouldn't look like spiting the audience, a lie is not a twist, etc. SO. If Ted and Rebecca were meant to be platonic soulmates, that's fine!!! I don't NEED them to kiss!!! But I do not believe these people are even friends in season 3, after season 1 and tbh most of my favorite parts of season 2 were about how much they impact each other's lives. That's a dropped ball and there's NO REASON to have not made time for them to interact meaningfully because every episode was so fucking long. Instead I guess we had to know how super sad Rebecca was about not being able to have children but not need to talk to anyone about it and immediately be fully over it. Also see a lot of lingering shots of Rebecca...looking at a matchbook...

sfjbkfgs early in the season they very obviously established that Rebecca's arc was going to be realizing she actually loves the team and wants to support them and see them succeed because of her own heart and not to spite Rupert, and I guess that happened but why didn't it happen gradually in ways I could see, why did it happen in an episode in which I'm supposed to have known all along that this has to do with her childhood self ?? and in which Rupert has a FULL personality change to facilitate her sudden realization. In what fucking world would he invite her to that meeting, because she's smart or because she brings ~diversity or because maybe he wants to sleep with her again? None of it tracks at all lmao but it was also the episode in which I really enjoyed Tony Head so whatever

speaking of not tracking, Nate.........I've never been invested in Nate especially but he was SO cartoonishly evil at the start and then kind of never again. I was braced for a redemption arc I wouldn't care about but that didn't even really happen?? he got a girlfriend and realized Rupert was a bad role model? it turns out his dad thinks he was a prodigy and always just wanted him to be happy, which, lmao WHAT where????? and what am I supposed to believe about Jade changing her mind about him btw because she's seen people be terrible to him at that very table before AND she has to know he loves the place and the food because he's there all the time, so what was the revelation that turned her from relatable-via-Nate-ambivalence to suddenly heart-eyes just fdslelugatw so much of my feeling about this season isn't even like it's bad it's just it's nonsense

One of my big complaints about the season is just Keeley's whole deal. Separating her from the team/rest of the cast was a wild choice. Barbara is fine but I also would have been perfectly fine without her and none of the other new characters for the PR side story added anything to the show. Especially if at the end Rebecca is just going to write Keeley a check for the chump change she needs to run the agency. Why didn't we just do that to begin with??? I guess this season I'm supposed to think Keeley ~learned to be independent in various ways but, again, I don't ?? And her needing to not be with Roy I guess as part of that and then get back together offscreen but then not really be together maybe but then also possibly having throuple vibes later that never get acknowledged feels, whatever, like something Bill Lawrence didn't write sdfjlsefaj,lwte I know this is my unsupportable argument that post I RBed was making fun of but idc

also Jamie wanting to be with Keeley at the end of the show feels extremely Harry Potter epilogue to me lmao Jamie you don't have to marry someone you went to high school with there are so many people

Roy was fine this season. He didn't have much to do but that's probably for the best lol. Him taking Ted's job is probably the only main character ending I feel like makes sense for this season and the overall show. Him training and begrudgingly becoming friends with Jamie was always funny.

OK one of the wrong reviews was basically like if you don't appreciate this season you don't appreciate classic tragic structure. Fuck off with that. First of all this was a sitcom about soccer so even if they were going for a classic tragedy in season 3 that's stupid and they shouldn't have been. But I also just don't think that's what was happening ??? I think I'm supposed to believe everyone gets a happy ending and I just don't. Like the whole oh it's sad that Ted ends up where he started and it's about how persistent optimism and kindness can burn you out or whatever, that's...if that's what they were going for, again, why tf, and also could we have seen that like. at all. Ted barely Teds for anyone this season (frex the previously mentioned never talking to Rebecca). ROY Teds more than Ted in season 3. If we got to see Ted trying to Ted even, like, twice, and either not being able to dig down and find the positivity or I guess noticing that he needs someone to be that for him, OK, fine. A Ted/Keeley scene would have been a PERFECT vehicle for this. Didn't happen. idk if we're supposed to think he's getting back together with Michelle but that would be so...so bad ??? like what about Tan Lines??? why even have Tan Lines??? even if not, we just left completely unaddressed her starting a relationship with their marriage counselor, which is also BAD lmao. God why did I have to see so much of Michelle this season. Michelle video calls every other episode and two lines for Dr. Sharon. Nonsense. lol one of my friends summarized Ted's ending as "yeah going back to the unfulfilling life that didn't work before the show started is a victory for our protagonist"

Even the soccer of it all re that whole thing was silly. Oh marriage counselor boyfriend is a bad guy because he doesn't care about the soccer game. Oh Ted is happy now because he's coaching Henry's rec league soccer team. like it's fine that EVERYONE is still together in Richmond but he's "home" now and still around soccer which is good because we definitely saw him learn to love soccer during the course of the show. sure Jan

(to be fair I am not the audience for "it's about the kid" plots so even if I felt like it worked from the start of the show for Ted to choose moving back to where Henry is, which I don't, I wouldn't care for it, so maybe those criticisms aren't especially valid) (I didn't care about JD's kid either)

speaking of the soccer though every single scene that revolved around the actual soccer team was essentially perfect. Great use of so many of those boys. Very few notes. Sam in particular had a few nice things this season and of course Colin. Another incorrect review by a critic I actually like very much was complaining about Colin's story this season and it being tired and overdone and not caring about Trent's or Isaac's parts of it, but I actually really disagree! It was well done and it was nice to see in the context of professional sports where, sorry, coming out and being received well is not a cliche thing that happens a lot! Also, hot take! Zava was a good part of this season! Nice contained little story that impacted some characters I actually care about plus he was legit funny! Sometimes things in a comedy should be funny! I'd honestly watch three more seasons of Richmond-focused half-hour episodes with idk probably Brett Goldstein in charge

I haven't mentioned Beard because I just never understood what I was supposed to think about him lmao. By far the funniest character overall but I never felt settled on whether he was meant to be a manic pixie comic relief BFF or if he was like...a real person?? It strikes me as potentially bad that he was so worried about Ted's mental state all the time and never really mentioned his own and that was sort of a thing in the weird s2 episode but then not again? I felt so much ire about so much else I didn't have any for him marrying Jane lmao but I do understand the people who are upset about that because that sure seemed pretty toxic, but wasn't it supposed to be played for laughs? Does that fit in a show that's supposed to mainly be about people treating each other well because we're all we've got? idk, RIP Beard, sorry your best friend in the world wasn't at your wedding because it would have been narratively underwhelming to see him leave and then see him back at a future major event or whatever

idk idk, season 1 Rebecca was one of my favorite characters ever and I was so angry in the middleish of the season about how much I felt like she was being wasted, but by the end I was just like...I mean, what's to be mad at. She's not even her anymore. Ted wasn't Ted anymore. Nate I guess literally reverted back to season 1 Nate which also is that...okay...him ending up lower than he started out feels not great

Good for Mae and the bar boys though, used just the right amount this and every season and always a damn delight

OK this is ridiculous I'm going to be done now. I do want to say I enjoyed several episodes this season a lot! A couple top 10 potentials! I really enjoyed the Amsterdam one actually because it reminded me of like a Nancy Meyers movie, very nice and warm, but it feels worth noting that that is not a feeling I would describe as being struck by fucking lightning :))))))

in conclusion maybe we as a nation can move on now from giving SNL alumni we find charming huge budgets and ethereally talented casts and collaborators and letting them get us emotionally invested in their midlife crises sandbox playing

ohhh I am Brainstorming

ok ok so infodump ahead: Arcelia is the daughter of Archie (aaaand possibly Maxie? I haven’t figured out if I want hardenshipping to be divorced or if they get together after ORAS) and grew up a member of Team Aqua. For a while there she had full confidence in her father’s plan, but then Something happens (haven’t figured out what yet) and realizes oh wait this idea is shit actually what the fuck dad. unsure of what to really do to stop her dad yet, she runs away and ends up in Littleroot. there she stumbles into Professor Birch getting chased by a wild poochyena, saves him, etc. etc. etc.

not really sure what to do with this lost child who literally just came out of the bushes and saved him one day, Birch takes her in and lets her be an assistant like Brendan is. buuut she’s not super good at it. she gets kind of fed up and restless, especially when her dad is still out there planning to FLOOD THE FUCKIN WORLD, so as a way to try and help her Birch gives her Pebble the Mudkip and sends her out on a journey. thus begins her gym challenge and her mission to save her father from himself basically.

post-ORAS Archie has to serve time and stuff so Arcelia… doesn’t really know where to go from here. and she doesn’t wanna stay in Hoenn honestly cause she’s still kinda recovering from saving the world and fighting her own dad. SO Birch tries to help and sends her to Naranja Academy in Paldea, where hopefully she can find some semblance of a normal life and learn to just be a regular kid. it’s all well meaning but it doesn’t exactly work out bc Arcelia ends up being all by herself. again.

aaaand of course that’s where she meets a certain future-ground-type-elite-4-member! Arcelia is 16 at this point but she has to start off at freshman cause of yknow, never going to school before, and Rika is 17 and a junior. Arcelia struggles because 1. this is an extremely drastic change to literally anything she’s ever had in her life before 2. sure she’s only like a year older than the rest of the kids in her grade but she’s still significantly more mentally mature than a majority of them and thus has trouble connecting with them. honestly, even if she was allowed to start off as a sophomore, that prolly wouldn’t change cause kid has literally seen shit beyond any other high schooler’s comprehension.

Rika, not knowing anything about the whole saving the world thing but can easily see Arcelia’s struggling, approaches her and offers to help her with fitting in, keeping her grades up, and stuff like that. and the rest is history! the two become extremely close, but I don’t think Arcelia would fully open up about being the hero of the Hoenn crisis just yet- she’ll vaguely mention her strained relationship with her dad and make it come off as something much more simple than “my dad was an evil team leader who tried to drown the world”, but during their school years Rika never totally understands the full weight of it.

I think once Rika graduates they have a dramatic falling out of some kind. haven’t exactly figured out the details of it yet but during this falling out Arcelia has to go back to Hoenn- probably somethin to do with her dad or with Kyogre or whatever- whatever it is she can’t tell Rika about it, which only frustrates Rika even more and creates a further rift between them. eventually Arcelia just leaves with hardly a goodbye and neither of them really get any closure.

Quick overview on Lilli's Pokémon... Rewrite? Verse? Idk what this is lmao

All I really know for sure is that I have a lot of thoughts about pokemon's lore and plotlines. I want to try my hand at connecting stuff with a little more continuity because it's fun! There's no way I can get to everything because we'd be here all day, but I figured I'd set up the basic premise and include some fun notes/headcanons!

My general idea is focusing from the anime (up until Horizons) while also including more components from the games (such as more of the SWSH plot/rivals, Emma from XY's post game, Zinnia and the Delta Episode, etc). I also include a multitude of my own original characters, along with some of my friends' (most prominently @starkitters's goobers). Storylines are generally divided up by "sagas" based on the original generation they take place in! I may include some Horizons as it would coincide with ScaVio, but I need to catch up with that series (though from the looks of it it’s all pretty banger)!

This concept is definitely going to mostly get smaller things of art/comics/drabbles and whatnot rather than a full-fic/comic series or whatever because... oh gosh there's way too much. Also obviously not going to cover every single anime episode bit by bit because that would make me insane!!

As for a general timeline— a lot of this main stuff would kinda unfold in the span of 2-3 years? I might make it longer, but then again a lot can happen in even just a month, y’know? Generally, Ash would stay 10 between Indigo League-Advanced, 11 by DP-XYZ, and 12 during SuMo-Journeys. The Legends Arceus shenanigans would probably be during Journeys and the ScaVio stuff is definitely after (I'm thinking potentially a year or so after Journeys' saga would be wrapped up? Though it could even be immediately after idk).

There is. A ton of information even just in this little intro post, and a lot of it isn’t even fully concrete either. But if you find the time to read through it all, I’d really appreciate feedback!

General/Introductory Information

Earlier involvement from rivals/evil teams such as the Galar Rivals, N and Team Plasma, Team Skull, etc! All of that will be covered more in the respective sagas they all appear in, lol

I'm kind of on the fence for whether or not more player characters would be included? May, Dawn, and Serena are canon companions/major characters the anime, I'm including Brendan as Birch's son and Lucas as Dawn's twin brother, Akari and Rei are both going to be native to Hisui, etc.

So far, the mc roles that are taken up by OCs include my characters Lilac (involved in XYZ/SuMo but becomes a Swsh Gym Challenger), Stacy (Emmet's daughter, travels back to Hisui to find her missing Uncle), and Chrys (main Naranja student involved with Nemona, Arven, Penny, and also Kieran and Blueberry stuff). @starkitters's oc Arthur also kinda takes an mc role as Hop's bestie/neighbor and the two of them work with the knight-wolf duo (Zacian and Zamazenta) instead of Ash and Goh just kinda... feeling shoved in there. Ash and his Journeys buddies still get involved in the Darkest Day shenanigans, but another Gym challenger/Hop's bestie)

While characters like Red and Blue/Green aren't really going to be involved since Ash and Gary already kinda take up those roles, there is potential in making like... Ash's dad a Red-esque character? A character based on Leaf? We've also gotten cameos of Jimmy (Gold/Ethan) and Marina (Krys) from the old OVAs and Lyra is briefly seen during DP... but tbh we get so little on them it wouldn't be too difficult to make the OVAs an au or something? I'll have to play with all of it.

The Black and White/Best Wishes saga is going to get some major storyline reworks. Team Rocket (Jessie, James, Meowth, and Wobuffet, etc) aren't going to start actually doing evil shit/working directly with Giovanni out of nowhere. Rather, they get have their own route uncovering stuff about N and Team Plasma, which follows more of the storyline from BW1. Characters from BW2 like Colress and Hugh are definitely still going to appear and their deal won't really change too much, but I'll have to figure out their involvement (especially with Colress he’s got a lot of potential for his own stuff imo). Cheren and Bianca are in a "halfway" sorta period and acting as apprentices for Lenora and Juniper respectively.

I'm mostly going off of the Scarlet side of the ScaVio storyline, with Naranja Academy being in Mesagoza and Sada being the professor inside Area Zero. However, Uva Academy and Turo are also going to be involved! Essentially, Naranja is a school that focuses on helping its students figure out and prepare for careers connected with pokemon (trainers, coordinators, breeders, doctors/nurses, etc) in a more general sense. Uva Academy in Zapapico is primarily a research school (especially prominent for professors and scientists) while Blueberry in Unova specializes in professional battling (League Members, Battle Facilities, etc). Naranja provides courses and connections for careers Uva and Blueberry have niches in, but it's the difference between attending a more well-rounded school and attending a specialized one, if that makes sense.

Turo develops the Terastral Orbs used throughout the Paldea region, while Sada focused on Area Zero and develops the time machine that brings past and future Paradox Pokemon. Their relationship is super complicated and messy /pos. I don't think they ever got officially married, but they're 100% divorced in spirit.

Since the games kinda write Sada and Turo interchangeably (even outside of the whole AI deal) and they're described in the same ways besides pronouns and stuff, I want to make the professors a little more distinct from each other. Sada dives head-first into her passions and doesn't like anything or anyone holding her back, Turo is more conscientious but can come off a lot colder than he intends sometimes, etc.

I know most people hc the Subway twins (Ingo and Emmet), Elesa, Skyla, etc to be in like their late 20s/early 30s... but since I gave Emmet a daughter who's the mc of the Legends Arceus saga... they're actually gonna be slightly younger than Lusamine (around 38 or so) lmao. Let's get more nice and hot older adults up in here

Silver (Giovanni's son/Johto rival) is included! Since there's already a baby Lugia in the anime named Silver and that's just... too perfect, this rendition of the character is going to be named Sage (Yomogi in Japanese). I'm still figuring out his personality and stuff since Paul's whole "be the strongest/pokemon are just tools" thing was pulled from game!Silver, but I kinda want to play with Sage being a little more mellowed out by the time we would meet him in Johto Journeys? He acts as an assistant for Professor Elm, and is surprisingly great with raising pokemon despite the edgy tough-guy act he usually keeps up. He and Brock can nerd out about breeding and nuturing techniques and stuff.

An original team I made myself, Team Comet, acts as a foil of sorts to Team Flare. They’re fighting over (literal) life and death

I’m not entirely sure how to make this work, but I really want AZ’s ultimate weapon to be the (super buffed up) prototype of the healing machines used in pokemon centers. Like… the current machines extract infinity energy from deceased pokemon’s remains (such as ashes and stuff) instead of. Y’know. Draining living pokemon of that energy directly, causing them to die. AZ himself developed this practice as an attempt to redeem himself from all of the tragedy he caused in the name of his Floette. His full name is Azrael Jovalie… making him a pivotal ancestor to the Joy family.

Several large family-clans are the primary leaders of international organizations. The Joy family runs the pokemon centers and overall healthcare facilities, Jenny family runs the international and local police departments, the Jordan family are firefighters who provide aid and try to prevent natural disasters, etc (they may be involved with pokemon rangers? I’m not entirely sure). Others are obviously welcome to work in these forces as well, and members of these families aren’t (usually) forced into working the family business if they want to pursue other goals.

Obviously the anime has all the service-people look identical to safe on time and everything, but I think making unique designs and characters for the Joys, Jennys, etc is a fun concept! No matter their gender or ethnicity, almost every member of a poke-business family have hair and eye colors in the same spectrum. For example, almost every Joy has pink hair that’s styled in circular/drop shapes to some capacity, and blue eyes. Jennys have teal/turquoise hair in lightning shaped styles, and brown eyes. Jordans have charcoal black hair that looks like smoky wisps, and fiery orange/gold eyes.

Xerosic (creepy ass scientist dude who forces you to push a button and coaxes Emma into his expansion suit testing) was originally from Ultra Megalopolis. I’m not entirely sure how to connect him to all the Team Flare stuff??? Or even how exactly he ends up in Kalos but he was part of the Ultra Recon Squad and volunteered to travel to the “main” pokemon world for the to see where Necrozma might try to take all the light next. But when he actually shows up there, he just. Doesn’t care. He’s so fascinated by all of the different pokemon and how energy manifests in such different ways… All he wants to do is learn everything he can about it

Eternatus is an Ultra Beast! The ricochet from AZ’s Ultimate Weapon woke it up and caused the first darkest day.

Builing more from the Adventures manga, Galar was already starting to lose its energy, but the issue is actually going to be addressed far more openly. As Eternatus slept for thousands of years, its dynamax energy gradually dies down to the point where it can’t really be used as a proper resource— especially not to power so many of Galar’s communities. Rose definitely pushed a lot of the reliance of dynamax energy in recent history, but I’m certain Galar has relied on Eternatus for even longer. What makes Rose’s plan to wake Eternatus up again even more messed up (besides putting so many people and pokemon in danger), is that he’s essentially harvesting Eternatus of its energy: Wake it up to get the dynamax levels up again, (have Leon) catch it so it doesn’t go back to sleep… Rose sees the pokemon less as an actual creature and more like a walking power plant, definitely in part with how different Eternatus looks from “normal” pokemon.

The original Sun/Moon storyline with Lusamine and her kids happens first (Lusamine is a mix of the doting from the anime and her abuse from the games… she’s messy /pos). Then, around the time Ash and his friends meet Poipole, that’s when we’d meet the Ultra Recon squad and get into the Necrozma stuff.

Y’know Goh’s whole thing with wanting to catch Mew? How Jessie’s mom died in pursuit of Mew? And the eventual data she found was used for Mewtwo’s creation? Do you see how I’m connecting the dots?

Misc Information

Harley is one of Karen's cousins, making them both descendants of Sanqua (Galaxy Team's Construction Leader) and her little brother, Melli (Diamond Clan Warden of Coronet Highlands). Obviously... we can tell who took after who even after all these years, lmao. They also have a baby cousin (one of my ocs lol) named Jimson from Laverre City (Kalos) who is currently one of the Blueberry League Club's Biome Leaders! He specializes in psychic types... and is lowkey a chuunibyou (really commits to the wizard/witch act)

While Serena is in Hoenn, she meets Lisia and the two become girlfriends besties! They’re like twelve so idk if they’d actually do anything with their feelings but the mutual pining is very very apparent. Their ship name is Dreamshowshipping!

Chloe is highkey a lesbian. That’s just always how I’ve interpreted her??? She’s constantly shocked that Ash knows all of these cute girls. I think her and Iris eventually being a couple would be very cute. If Flowershipping isn’t taken, I shall call them that!

Because I am not immune to @yamujiburo’s propaganda of Hanamusashipping (Hiii Kiana if you’re reading through all of this I am so honored and so sorry it’s so much gjdhdhdhs), I love the idea that Jessie and James start a poly/ish thing with Delia!! By that I mean Delia and James are more so queerplatonic and Jessie is smooching both of them lmao. Ash’s step parents have been here the whole time yippee!!

Arven gets a harem to make up for all the trauma (/j but also not). He gets 2 boyfriends (Giacomo and Drayton) and a girlfriend (Copaia, my main Uva student character). They are all bisexual, bet u didn’t know that ;p

Carmen and Amarys are lesbians and girlfriends!! They’ve been dating for 2 years until the main events of the ScaVio saga

I’m not entirely sure what to do with Indigo League’s Elite 4 since it changes between Kanto and Johto?? Will and Karen are definitely well-known trainers (and possibly even coordinators?) in their own right, but idk if or when they would take Lorelai and Agatha’s places. They might become members around Journeys (since I’m treating that as a general 2 years since Indigo League), but that’s very much up in the air.

Xerosic straight up ditches his daughter (Zossie). Which. He was never that good of a parent anyways but.

Klara is the younger sister of Lacey’s mother (who I have as an oc), making her an aunt! She gave Lacey her Galarian slowpoke/slowbrow.

Lucy is Kieran and Carmine’s older cousin. I know the go-to is that she’s their mom but Lucy’s vibe is more around her early 20s or so to me.

Because I adore the concepts I’ve found from @critterbitter and their mutuals, Ingo and Emmet are Drayden’s nephews. Which makes Stacy and Drayton second cousins— there’s so much comedic potential there you have no idea. Keep in mind that Drayden is also paternal figure to Iris, and Hop and Leon are her cousins… the family tree gets real complicated real fast lmao

Chapter 11: Four-Fanged Offense (Section 3)

"Whew, that was scary." After confirming that his best friend was alright, Hector wiped the cold sweat off his brow.

Eliwood apologized to him. "I'm sorry. I wanted to try talking with him once no matter what it took to do so."

"Still…"

"All's well that ends well! And we got to know a bit about our foe." Lyn cut in as Hector tried to say something further. 

It wasn't unreasonable for Hector to be angry. Eliwood had nearly died. But just as Lyn said, though it wasn't much, they had certainly seen what their enemy was like.

"...So the Black Fang as a whole really is a group of chivalrous thieves. And they might just be manipulated to do as Nergal says… I wonder if there isn’t some way for us to talk to their leader, Brendan Reed?"

"Yes, there might be some way for us to end this without fighting." Lyn nodded.

"...I'm against that proposal."

"Hector?" Hector’s unexpected, deeply sullen response stuck with Eliwood.

"...Anyway, we should return to the inn. We might have a message from Pent and the others." Hector forced the end of the conversation, then immediately started walking back towards the inn.

"What’s with him? I wonder what could have happened?” Lyn said quietly in response to Hector’s mood.

But Eliwood knew exactly why Hector was against his idea.

The Black Fang killed Leila. They were the murderers of one of his subordinates, and as such, they should hate every last member.

Hector, who cared much more deeply about his friends and allies than the average person, likely had no intention of trying to talk anything out with the very group that had killed one of his allies.

The Black Fang was simply another enemy they had to take out.

Matthew began to move the moment Linus gave out the order to retreat and his subordinates complied.

If Matthew followed Linus’ followers, he concluded, then he would eventually end up at the Black Fang’s base. And so, he slipped away from Eliwood and his other allies without a word, and started to trail after them.

'I will find them! Just watch me, Leila…’

Matthew did everything he could to suppress the hatred that wanted to flow out from within him at any second, and ran. If they noticed him following them, then all his effort would be for naught. Keeping his presence hidden so that they would not sense he was there at all, he ran after them while also keeping his distance.

But there was a figure following after him.

“Hey, I’m going with you.”

When he realized that it was the ex-member of the Black Fang, he put a hand on the hilt of the dagger he kept hidden under his cape.

“You can’t be so angry. They’ll find you.”

At Legault’s words, Matthew calmed himself down once more. He was currently following someone. He had to hide every ounce of his presence. “...What are you doing?”

“Nothing really. I just so happened to see you tailing them. I immediately decided to do whatever I could to help.”

“Why are you going so far to help me? Worried about your old allies?

“I mean, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t… Whoa, hey, calm down!”

He stopped Matthew from putting his hand on the hilt of his dagger again, then continued, “...The Black Fang as they are now is a far cry from how they used to be. Taking them down… Taking Nergal down… I suppose you could call it my revenge.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ll tell you about it next chance we get, I suppose. For now, we have to focus on following these guys’ don’t we?” Legault answered to dodge the question, and nodded towards the backs of the Black Fang members moving forward, now just small specks in the distance.

That was of course their priority, but Matthew couldn’t trust the aloof man in front of him.

He looked at Legault with a suspicious gaze. 

Legault mumbled in exasperation, “Fine. Here, just take it all," then pulled everything he had out from under his cloak, including his dagger, lockpick, and even his own personal vulnerary. "Now I’m totally unarmed. I’m not that strong… I’d have no hope of killing you with my bare hands. Now can you trust me, at least a little?”

“...There’s a possibility you might throw one of those rocks over there at me.”

“Then what am I supposed to do? Are you gonna make me cut my own arms off?”

“I’d like to, but… At the moment, we need to hurry. I’ll trust you.” Matthew threw Legault’s belongings back at him, then focused on their pursuit. “...For now."

Legault returned everything to their proper places under his cape, then followed after Matthew.

“...First, I need to talk to Brother… That woman really is far too shady…”

Linus, had disappeared from Eliwood’s sight, and was now walking the road to the Black Fang’s base alone. After his conversation with him, his suspicions about Sonia were even stronger.

But how could he reveal this fox in sheep's skin?

Ever since before the Black Fang had changed to become what it was now, he always needed to discuss everything with Lloyd, who he depended on for everything. But…

He was lost in his thoughts when he sensed a discomforting feeling, like something had suddenly entered his body.

“...Wh… What…?” In that instant, he felt intense pain and powerlessness assail his body. “You… I never felt your presence… nothing at all…"

All of the strength had been drained from his body and he could no longer will himself to move as he wished, but he just barely managed to turn around. There stood the eerie person with the golden eyes - Limstella.

“...Mad Dog Linus. You have such marvelous quintessence.” A red light shone in Limstella’s hand. There was no mistaking what it was. It was the quintessence they had just sucked out of him.

The moment they finished their business, Limstella disappeared into a teleportation circle.

Linus glared at the now empty space Limstella had disappeared from, and mustered up his last bit of energy to say, “...Dammit… …I… messed up…”

There were things that he needed to do. But he no longer had any strength left to carry them out. Limstella had stolen every last bit of it from him.

"Brother… I'm… so… rry…"

Leaving exactly what he was apologizing for a mystery forever, Linus of the Four Fangs breathed his last.

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started? - Just write. Don't worry about how you think it sounds. Do not worry about how "good or bad" it is. Do not. Just write. Get all of that out of the way. Insecurity will be your greatest adversary. Improve and think about how you could re-do or write better in the future after you've written! You will never be able to improve or be better at writing if you do not first start writing! It is also okay to take ideas and styles that you see other writers use and implement them! That is how you grow and learn! If you enjoy a particular aesthetic of writing then try it out for yourself! See how it feels! But most importantly simply write regardless of that voice in your head. You can do it. Even if it's "bad" or you do not like what you've made later, do it anyway! Worry about improvements after you have something to improve upon! 🤯 What's a genre you struggle with as a writer (ex. romance, action, etc.)? - Hetero Romance because I feel like the straights are not okay 99% of the time. I do not struggle in writing conflict in romance at all! But with hetero people it simply feels unfit and poorly constructed like a sad facade I cannot replicate. 🥰 How do you feel about reader interaction? Are you open to receiving questions about your fics? - I adore reader interactions! This not only is beneficial for me as a writer but it also builds a bond between me and the communities that I adore being a part of! It's critical to me as a writer, myself, to experience this. I do not need to share every little bit of fanfic that I write. And I do not. There are vast amounts of fics I do not share or have withheld. But the substance that I do share I share because I wish for it to become part of the community I love, adore, and support. It is, in its own way, my method of building bridges. I create. Some people draw and create fanart. Others write. That is my contribution to community. My creations and my writing is how I build those connections and so engagements with and through others wishing to connect with me about my writing is incredibly valuable and deeply, deeply cherished.

💌 How do you feel about comments and feedback? - I am always open for comments and feedback. I have a personal policy that follows something that Neil Gaiman posted once where it is considered in poor taste to offer feedback unless someone asks for it. I, however, do not mind it myself for myself if someone wishes to offer it. I feel I have a good healthy grasp in sifting through what I am able to use and apply for feedback and what feedback is not particularly useful for me. I am comfortable and confident in my writing and always looking to gain improvements. But those improvements can only be applicable if it helps push me in the direction I would like to see my writing go. I also always love comments! To see and hear how my work impacts other people is incredibly important to me! Even if it's not something writing related. One, Francis Crozier (both not just as a character but a figure so I suppose Historical Headcanon) - It's a small one, but he has a little charm/emblem of St. Brendan that probably is hung or stays next to his berth aboard his ship. And Raskolnikov is Narcoleptic. Hands down that man is narcoleptic.

AAA ok im curious since you posted that travel group pic. mirroring their other siblings, what is peyton and cereus' relationship like?

Me answering this half a year after you sent this ask but so it goes!

So admittedly the specifics of their relationships is still a work in progress, since Cereus was a later addition to this verse after I had made Micah/Jackie/Dylan Peyton’s main interaction partners. And Cereus as a whole needs some work. But what I’m leaning towards is unlike Aidan and Liliana who grow closer as time progresses due to traveling together (and Deni and Braxton who are still close cause they’re both like 10), Peyton and Cereus start out closer and then grow further apart with age. Although as Peyton grows apart with everyone as time progresses, this just follows the general theme of Peyton as “the distant hero.” Driven by the pursuit of his goals to the detriment of his personal relationship. It’s always seemed like a given to me that May and Brendan would make an effort to try and get their kids to be friends. Arranging playdates together, encouraging them to travel together when applicable, etc. So while Cereus is a bit younger than Peyton, they’re close enough in age where Brendan and May for sure would have pushed them to be friends. And while they’re children, they’re very much friends! Both are pretty outgoing and friendly overall, so they do get along well as a result. If asked, they would both say that the other was their best friend growing up, since while they both for sure had other friends, they were each other’s most consistent friend. Bff they saw the most. But there’s just enough of an age gap between them that Peyton starts his journey before Cereus. And once Cereus is able to start his own journey two years later, the seeds are set for Peyton to ultimately leave Hoenn.

Initially though, once Cereus is out traveling, he does get sort of roped into the Jackie/Micah/Dylan trio at times since Micah ends up taking him under his wing as a fellow coordinator. Giving him advice, showing him the ropes. Of course given Cereus’s parents, Cereus doesn’t necessarily need a ton of pointers per se, but he is trying to make it as a coordinator without relying on his parents (because let’s be real, Harley can and would pull strings and Cereus doesn’t want that). So if Cereus has questions, he goes to Micah (or sometimes Drew if he caves and asks one of his parents) since he feels Micah will be more unbiased and honest with him. And as a byproduct he sees and interacts with Peyton some as well.

As for once Peyton leaves Hoenn to travel the world on his “hero journey,” I don’t see Cereus taking Peyton’s absence as personally as some of the others do. They still sometimes talk but it’s one of those situations where as time passes, they talk less and less. Check up on what the other is doing through whatever social media each uses, but interaction past that decreases with time. However, they do always still have that base of “he was my best friend when I was a kid” to fall back on, so while they never stop being friends, they’re less close to each other once they’re both adults. Both have followed their own path and respect that about each other, even if their different paths mean they rarely see each other. When they do happen to see each other though, it’s pretty easy for them to reconnect. In some ways it’s like picking back up on where they left their friendship. So very much old friends. Perhaps if I ever figure out what Peyton does epilogue wise, I’ll have more of an opinion on how things progress past that, but for now that’s my general vibe on what their relationship is like.

Amy (if she lived) she would totally welcome Sally with open arms and make sure she's alright. She would probably ask Sally why she ended up at the studio, if she's hurt. hungry, or thirsty. Then she'll make sure Sally is alright and try to figure about if she got hurt or anything.

Owen would go: "Ah shit another kid?" Then Amy will scold him and tell him to be nice. Owen might just awkwardly ask if Sally likes puppets and probably sit downs and teaches how to play poker before Amy tells him not to make bets with puppets again

Anthony would be like a fun uncle to his niece, he probably bought her some geeky shirt and showed his matching tattoo he got with his GF. He would call her every day and asks how is college doing. He also played the drunk telephone with her as Beth was trying to figure out what he was saying to Sally and vice versa for Sally to Beth

Jake probably met her because of Amy or Beth. He would make sure she's ok during her visits, and he might even ask her what motivated to visit the studio and if Nick or the others caused her some trouble. He might even do some voice impressions and share some funny stories about working with Amy and Owen.

Sarabeth "Beth" would pretty much act like a big sister to Sally. She will get her a drink to chat about Anthony being an idiot, discuss work and how their editor "Ericka Swan" is a bit insane. Both would also bond with Anthony and go to theme parks with Blue Scout (Hannah Pierson) and Space-buns Scout (I think we called her Hollie or something like that. They're from our duality AU) Basically a family bonding time

Brendan would basically hold Sally and ask if she's Beth and Anthony's kid. Then he would be chocked that Anthony has a niece

Kimberly "Kim" would be all like: "You got a niece, Tony-tunes? Cool"

Jordan would simply pat Sally's head and give her some chocolate. They tend to be the cool sibling friend

Victor might recognize her as his granddaughter from one of his kids (not sure if Anthony has a sister or brother), but he probably won't get too close. Sally probably doesn't want anything to do with him either since Anthony has been like a big brother to her.

Mitchell "Mitch" would love her as cousin

Mortimer, he probably recognized Sally from the pictures in Anthony's wallet. He didn't know she was his niece, but knew she was connected to his host like Beth was.

Riley probably would be done with having to deal with more youngsters somehow tied with the weird conspiracy guy that tried to take Mortimer to the police. At least she's glad she doesn't act like Exliza or Beth.

Nick might find Sally tolerable and even share some of his finest works with her as a way to impress her (in the Platonic sense)

Daisy would try to make her a pie, and then want to know how the hell is she related to Anthony Pierson.

Blue Scout "Hannah" loves her as her cousin and a sorta aunt figure

Space buns Scout "Holly" loves Sally as her best friend and she often asks when they can visit "Uncle Anthony and Aunt Beth"

For Exliza

Amy's first reaction to Exliza would be something like "Huckleberry hot chocolate pie, it's Exliza?!" Then she proceeds to be nice and apologizes for their bad experiences and have a nice cup of tea

Owen is all like "Ah Shit here we go again" and proceeds to get the first aid kit and those children's leashes to make sure Exliza doesn't jump into trouble.

Jake would be aware of the complicated history she had with Amy. but nonetheless would be happy to help Exliza in future projects and even ask if how is she doing with her puppets.

Anthony would be somewhere within "HOW THE HELL IS SHE ALIVE" and "Well at least she doesn't take our group as a joke" and then gets her a beer because his life is a mess.

Beth would be all like "I think she's some sort of Uncle Owen version of a lucky charm." and a combination "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE DOESN'T USE THE FIRST AID KIT?" Then she would faint if she heard about Dolly-

Branden might be happy to have another chaotic been to take care of and try to adopt evil puppets with.

Kim would be all like "Piersons, are you sure you guys are not madmen magnets or something?"

Then they'll get prepare to call for help if things go wrong

Victor would spill his tea and be all like "Don't tell me these immature kids multiply...."

Mitch would be unfazed. She probably heard something from her aunt or something

Mortimer might recognize Exliza from some newspapers Amy had. He would be shocked to see how Exliza is still alive but would be all like "kay"

Cadenza Zvahl [Rewrite Overview]

Skipping over Brendan since he’s got like, a paragraph of information as of writing this and isn’t a super big player in the main story. Cadenza was adopted as a toddler by Hayden Zvahl and his wife, being raised in Meteli alongside her younger adopted brother Laurance, who was brought into the family about a year after she was. She attended Meteli School of Arts, a private school in Meteli that focused on art programs, with her brother before he transferred to Phoenix Drop High School for their soccer program. During her school years, she showed incredibly drive in leadership roles, and focused most of her attention on business and tailoring.

After graduating high school, Cadenza worked a freelance tailor through a wedding dress shop while attending college for business management, going on to open her own boutique and climbing really quickly through the business world. While operating her own boutique, Cadenza would meet and later date Zack. She still lives in Meteli, however given that she rarely has to work at her own store, is often rather “flighty” and takes a lot of trips. She frequently visits her younger brother in Phoenix Drop.

Max, Bonnie, and their Pokemon teams

Max is the younger brother of May and the son of the Petalburg City Gym Leader: Norman. Max, at first, was a know-nothing "know-it-all" who was proud of his studies until he realizes studying and experience are two different things, thanks to Blue and Gary. He became humbled and less egotistic of his studies. He curious of different Pokemon and their abilities.

Bonnie is the younger sister of the Lumiose City Gym Leader: Clemont. Bonnie is an energetic and cheerful girl. She always excited meet new Pokemon and befriend them. She always love tending and caring her Pokemon friends.

Each of them wants to be a full-fledged Pokemon Trainer and travel all around the world. The laws of the Pokemon world, kids of their age are allowed to own 3 Pokemon, however they're not permitted to travel without supervision, and they're not allowed to enter Gym Battles, Contests, etc. until the age of 10. When Max and Bonnie first met, they were skeptic of each other, they bicker like kids always do. Until soon they became good friends, despite arguing every now and then. They then develop puppy crush for one another.

Max's Pokemon Grovyle - A new Pokemon for Brotherhood. As a Treecko, it envies that Torchic was picked by May and Mudkip picked by Brendan, leaving it all alone. It follows Ash and the others in order to find a human that wants to take it in. Until it finally heard that Max wants a Treecko, and so it delivers itself to Max. It looks up to Ash's Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile as an older brother.

Gallade - He is the same Ralts in the canon anime. Back as a Ralts, he was severely sick, and Max helped him out by taking him to the Pokemon Center. In canon anime, Ralts went back with his family. But in Brotherhood, he decided to stay with Max and be his Pokemon.

Charmander - In Brotherhood, Ash's Charizard, along with Liza and Charla, visits Hoenn for an important event and run into Ash and the others. It was revealed that Ash's Charizard and Charla conceived an egg together. Charmander was hatched, and it seems to love to follow Max around. It was then decided that the parents let Charmander stick with Max.

Bonnie's Pokemon Dedenne - In canon anime, Clemont caught Dedenne for his little sister Bonnie. In Brotherhood, Clemont helps Bonnie to catch Dedenne, especially after the info from Red and the others that kids of Bonnie's age can be a trainer, along with the other rules. Bonnie gets Dedenne as in canon, except this time, she's his trainer.

Gardevoir - A new Pokemon for Brotherhood. As a wild Kirlia, she loves to play and care for younglings, whether they be humans or Pokemon. She met Bonnie when she separated from the group and without her Pokemon, as well as in trouble, she went to save and protect Bonnie. She then helps Bonnie return to the others, and sees how often Bonnie gets into trouble, she follows the heroes around, until Bonnie caught her so Kirlia can protect her at all times. Kirlia/Gardevoir is like a mother-figure to Bonnie.

Tyrunt - In canon anime, Tyrunt evolved into a Tyrantrum to rescue Bonnie, and it belonged to a scientist so Bonnie cannot keep it. In Brotherhood, it didn't evolved due to it being too young and inexperienced, yet Kirlia saved Bonnie in it's stead. The scientists allowed Bonnie to keep Tyrunt, due to it being attached to her.

They were talking about a film on the news this morning called The Whale with Brendan Fraser in it, and I like the guy but the film upset me and I've been trying to figure out why all day. Spoilers for the film I guess, I read the plot on Wikipedia.

The film is about a morbidly obese man (played by Fraser in a fat suit) trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter and about the grief he felt after his gay partner committed suicide and it talks about religious trauma and ridicule fat people face, and homophobia etc. And he talks about wanting to do it with dignity, and the film is about sorrow and upset. He dies at the end.

But the guys fat cause of an eating disorder (binge eating).

Being fat is what kills him.

People ridicule him because of his size, find him grotesque, mock him. The only people who interact with him do so because they feel sorry for him. There's a Christian missionary trying to get him to convert, and his nurse, his "only friend", is also the sister of the guys former partner who committed suicide. He offers all the money in his bank account to his daughter to get her to talk to him and she only wants to talk to him cause he's an English professor (who teaches remotely with the camera off I should add) and she wants him to rewrite an essay she's working on.

I am technically morbidly obese and the message is clear I suppose.

I am something to be pitied, and ridiculed, and I brought this on myself through the food I choose to eat, even if it is a reaction to "trauma". In the end this will kill me. I am grotesque. Nobody will want to talk to me if they know what I look like unless they want something from me.

I guess it's just upset me a bit that I am always a tragidy.

Tuned into tonight's Hollyoaks and I think I've finally figured out why I've never found the "tough guys" in #Hollyoaks (Warren, Brendan, Felix etc) that intimidating. It's because being tough in this show isn't that impressive when characters can be knocked out just by lightly pushing them away like Carter did to Hannah at the end of tonight's episode. It turns out I was wrong when I predicted that Hannah would come back and try to convince Carter to embrace his homosexuality like John Paul did, it seems as though she's found out about his secret gay convertion therapy sessions and is giving him both barrells for it. During this episode I remembered that there is actually a gay bar in Sunderland called "The Closet" (which is a fucking strange name to give a bar where people are supposed to go to celebrate their sexuality but I digress) and I thought it would be hilarious if somebody wanted to set up a secret gay conversion group but the only building available was The Closet. Incidentally if these "therapists" are able to "cure" homosexuals of their "illness" then surely it must be possible to make them even more gay. Say an out, proud gay guy feels as though he's not doing justice to himself or fulfilling his potential then it must be possible for these therapists to use their techniques to help them take their gayness to the next level. Later on in the episode Darren tried to find some common ground between his two estranged children JJ and the other one whose name I've forgotten and can't be bothered to Google but they just weren't having it. I put the following hypothetical exchange on Twitter:

JJ: Darren. It's pointless trying to bond with us. We clearly have nothing in common with you Darren: That's not true. We have got one thing in common JJ: What? Darren: Your Mum has probably given us both a good spanking

Finally the McQueen family decided to throw a big welcome home bash for Prince which ended up looking like the the lamest party I have ever seen. The put up the minimal amount of decorations and not even everyone in the family who could have turned up did turn up. I mean if your family members don't put in an appearance at a get together to celebrate a relative being found not guilty of murder then are they worth having as family members. I know I shouldn't be so disappointed at a party being thrown for a fictional character being so desperately underwhelming but I swear they've thrown bigger "Congratulations on not being pregnant" parties for Mercedes.
