Help me find a penpal!

So I’m learning German and I love getting post, so i thought hey let’s mix the two and it could be pretty fun!

I’m looking for a native German speaker to help me learn - I’ve only been learning for a year (but it’s been at a pretty intensive level - I’ve been kinda reading Harry Potter in German to give you an idea of my level). I’m 19, so preferably someone lovely who is around that age!

Also, if there’s someone who wants to learn English, then I’d be happy to be a penpal to them too! (... I’m English) I think that’s a good way of doing things - someone helps you and you pass it on to help someone else.

Some stuff about me: I like knitting and hiking and reading and Shonda Rhimes and I’m studying Chemistry... and I have big hair and an accent like I’m on the BBC.

SnailMail101 - Booklets

With the rise of the internet, I’m not sure how many folks use this method to interact with people anymore (but let’s be honest: how many people are realistically seeking out penpals in the 21st century?) but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Some people enjoy exchanging various types of booklets through the mail. These booklets are often relatively small (so they can fit in the in a standard envelope with a letter) and might be a couple pieces of paper stapled together. Booklets are generally “made” for a specific person - it gets passed around from person to person; once full, it gets returned to the person it was intended for. Different people have different reasons for exchanging these booklets, but one common reason to get involved is to find new penpals. Sure, plenty of people are on the internet these days, but booklet swapping was big before the internet was big. Plus, they are a way to “meet” people who don’t have access to the internet. 

Some of the popular types of booklets to get passed around include:

Friendship Books, or FBs - signers include their name/address and sometimes bits of information about themselves such as date of birth or interests.

Crams - a variation of FBs, the purpose of crams are to “cram” in as many people as possible. While signers include their name/address, the general expectation is that signers won’t include any additional information.

Friendship Sheet, or FS - another variation of FBs, FSs are simply sheets of paper rather than booklets.

Slams - Signers include their name and mailing info, but they are also given a series of questions to answer.

Deco - Signers decorate a page in the booklet and include their name/address.

Common abbreviations you might find in a booklet:

AA - Answer All

AM - Answer most

AS- answer some 

AF - answer a few

AVF - answer very few

BD - birthday

DOB -date of birth

SNNP - Sorry No New Pals

NNP - No new pals

SNNS - sorry no new swappers

NPW- new pals welcome

NSW - new swappers welcome

LLP- long letter pal

WW - world wide

Etiquette, etc:

If you agree to exchange booklets with someone, keep them moving. Don’t throw them out. 

If a booklet is full, send it to its intended owner.

Booklets can take a long period of time to pass from person to person to the point of being full. It may take years for a full booklet to be returned to you. It may be a good idea to include an Email address (or some other way of contacting you that isn’t likely to change) so that someone can verify your current mailing address.

You’re under no obligation to “sign” every booklet you receive.

Interpals is kind of like a social networking site for penpals. I personally have an account here and occasionally get messages (usually odd variety). I have yet to find a penpal through here, but I’m not actively using the site either. Your results may very.
