Raine’s Final Lie
I noticed something interesting about Raine and how they really lean into the Scary Shiny Glasses troupe. Specifically, how this is prevalent when they’re lying or otherwise acting deceitfully and how it ties into their final scene in King’s Tide.
TL;DR: Raine’s in love with Eda (shocker) and they both know it.
Right off the bat, literally the first time we see them their eyes are covered by the sheen of their glasses. This entire scene we do not see their eyes because Raine is in deep right now and can’t risk their mask slipping even a little.
Tumblr media
The next time is this little thing on Eda’s phone when they’re being named head of the coven. (Also interesting, you’ll notice that of all the coven heads before Darius are cloaked in shadow while Darius, Eberwolf and Raine are lit up).
Tumblr media
This next one is my second favorite when Raine is trying to turn down Eda’s offer to work with the BAtTs.
Tumblr media
What’s super interesting about this one is that while Raine is just facing the BAtTs, both eyes are hidden because they’re lying about them not excepting new members/not wanting Eda there. What’s super interesting is how when Raine turns to look at her, the glasses on the side of their profile that’s facing her loses it’s gleam... because unlike the BAtTs and other people Raine has been lying to/around, Eda can see right through them.
Which actually ties right into the next time this happens during Follies at the Coven Day Parade.
Tumblr media
What isn’t included in this gif is how Raine’s glasses lose their shine basically the second they hear Eda’s voice behind them (and likely put the last pieces together about what’s happening). Again though, Raine is putting on a show here, they don’t actually want to attack Luz, they just need everyone to think they’re still loyal to Belos.
The second to last time this happens is during the iconic reveal scene. Interestingly, this might be one of the first indicators that Terra already knows... because both times we’ve seen Raine drink the tea, their glasses either had no sheen or it goes away as she approaches.
Tumblr media
The last time we see this (so far anyway) is during King’s Tide... the only time it’s directed at Eda.
Tumblr media
It took me a minute to figure out why exactly their eyes are hidden in this scene. Everything’s out in the open, it’s known that they’ve betrayed the Emperor and are working with Eda and while removing someone’s arm is a little traumatizing, it’s not like they had a ton of other options or any immediate regrets.
And then it hit me.
“I promised a special kid... I’d protect you.”
This isn’t a lie per se, however, it is hiding one.
Because Raine didn’t need Luz to ask them to protect Eda. They were going to do that no matter what because they love her, even if it means fighting through excruciating pain to tear her arm off so at least she can live.
And the thing is? Eda knows. Eda knows, which is why their glasses lose the shine as soon as they turn back to her.
Because Eda can see right through them.

I Worry about Raine...
My dudes, I am about to make a LEAP and I really hope I'm just overthinking things again.
So Raine Whispers is a double agent, a rebel working within the covens, and we all love them and want only good things for them.
We feared for their safety after "Eda's Requiem", but it turns out they were fine.
Tumblr media
We feared for their memories/ freewill after "Follies at the Coven Day Parade", but again, they turned out to be fine.
Tumblr media
We've got some speculations circulating that there was a mole in the CATTs, either willingly or unknowingly, but surely it cannot be Raine because they're just nervous about Eda, and it's all one big red herring for us, the audience, right?
Again, they’re probably going to be fine...
Tumblr media
But there are parts of Raine's story that don't all add up. Their peril is always diverted so simply. Too simply.
Raine was "briefly" introduced via the old scrapbook photo in "Wing it Like Witches". Even Darius and the Blights were given cameos during the season 1 finale, and yet we don't meet any of them until we're well into season 2. Regardless, these characters all already existed in the story by Season 1, even if we didn’t know it yet.
Where was Raine for the coven tryouts Owl Beast flashback?
Where was Raine during Eda's publicized petrification ceremony?
Do you really think Raine "I love my owl wife" Whispers would've just sat back and watched his childhood best friend and ex-lover be petrified LIVE on their crystal ball? NO!
I think Raine's troubles go back even further than we were led to believe. I think Raine did go to try and help Eda, but was caught beforehand... (possibly by Terra Snapdragon.)
Tumblr media
This friendly-faced troublemaker who was already working their way up the ranks could be the perfect patsy to manipulate into the Emperor's plots, especially when they thought they were working against it all from the start. Everything they did, they thought would be to stop this evil system, when really they were playing right into the Emperor’s hands.
People liked Raine, trusted Raine, and this bard had a way of drawing in allies (AKA people who Belos would need removed or to keep an eye on). The Covens needed this kind of wholesome PR, so to speak, on their side.
Thus the former head bard CONVIENTLY "retires", Raine is put into the position of power they've been working towards, and they are left free to finally cause what little mischief missions with the BATTs they so please.
Tumblr media
Little does Raine know, Terra has been pulling puppet strings ever since Eda's near-petrification. The seeds planted off-screen all the way back in S1 (if not waaay before that).
Their capture? A ruse on Darius and Eber's parts, true... but also a carefully planned act for Terra/ Belos. Now Raine has even more reason to rebel, plot, and gather allies. They have even more reason not to trust her and to keep secrets and make desperate plans.
Their treachery doesn’t even warrant a petrification because it will be too hard to replace them. Well “Clouds On the Horizon” confirmed they all have replacement bodies for the Day of Unity itself, but for Raine in that moment, they meant Raine was more valuable to them alive and plotting than petrified and silenced.
And the tea? That's not even anything nefarious. Terra just wants Raine to think it is, to lull them into a false sense of security in thinking they got the best of her. Two steps ahead, they allow Raine to gather all the loose ends for them, while all they have to do is sit back and watch.
Tumblr media
Raine is either already under her control or something went down, memories were actually altered, or it’s all just mind games, but Terra already has Raine right where she wants them like a little chess piece. Maybe all Raine has to do is be themself and the rest just happens to work out for Belos?
Maybe they wanted this outcome for the Day of Unity? Maybe the CATT's plan actually works in the bad guy's favor instead of the rebels'? Maybe this is a joint effort between Terra and Belos years in the making. Maybe I'm giving the old plant lady too much credit??? I don’t want to undersell how much time these wicked, old people have had to think this all through.
And I don't think Raine is a traitor, but I do think we're missing something... Raine is missing something... and nobody is going to realize the gaps until it's too late.
Tumblr media
Did this make any sense at all? It is very late, and probably all super wrong, but all I know is I have FEARS for this finale. 😨😅
Feel free to speculate off of this though!

They’ve been killing at this for a long time now, so…. Favorite of the Disney TVA popular girl trope?
Pacifica Northwest, Sasha Waybright, Amity Blight, or Andrea Davenport?
Amity my beloved 🥺
She's such a refreshing take on the trope for me because I feel like she's one of the only few where she actually acknowledges that she did some pretty terrible things, you know? I personally can't speak for Sasha because I never watched Amphibia, but as far as Amity, Andrea, and Pacifica goes, I feel like she's the only one who, you know, actively worked towards bettering herself and her relationship with the people she hurt.
I rewatched Understanding Willow today and I love how messy it is!!! I love how awkward and uncomfortable Amity is and I love how imperfect things are between her and Willow at the end of the episode. It's not perfectly fixed. She's not magically on wonderful terms with Willow just because she helped Luz fix her memories. And that awkwardness carries over to future episodes and scenes where the two of them are alone together! There's some tense energy between them in Follies at the Coven Day Parade, where Amity is hesitant to reach out and afraid of what Willow might ask of her before she lets her talk.
Labyrinth Runners is an even better example!! Amity wants to be a good friend again, but she keeps accidentally falling back into old habits. She's still convinced that Willow is weak, because that's how she was the last time they were close. It felt really authentic, because Amity wasn't intentionally being mean, and I don't even think the show was trying to paint her as being mean, it's just...what she knows. She's behind, because it's been so long since she's had the chance to get to know Willow. It's like walking up to someone you haven't spoken to since elementary school and going "....hey, are you still into turtles??" even though you're both in your twenties, cause it's the only thing you still remember about them. It also reminds me of what it's like to grow up with a learning disability and have all of these well-meaning people try so hard to do everything for you that it just starts to feel demeaning. And once Willow showed her she didn't need her help anymore, she backed off! she accepted her for how she was!!! She finally saw her in the light that Willow wanted to see her in, and that's when she was finally able to move on. If we could've gotten just one more episode about them making up for lost time again, I would've loved that so much. You always hear about tragic friendships with sad endings, but you rarely ever hear about the ones that were once tragic, but aren't anymore. It's why I love them so much.
tldr; Amity Blight my beloved

see ? bard magic can be cool ! 2x07 — eda's requeim && 2x11 — follies at the coven day parade
i've been meaning to make a post about some of the properties of bard magic, && i figure this is as good a time as any. this post by no means fully encompasses everything bard magic can do, based on headcanons && what's in the show, but it's a starting point for the foundations.
conjuring — using a basic spell circles, a bard can summon their instrument from thin air. locking in — plucking a single string activates the spellcasting plane for further magic. this is an intention-based spell, meaning the user has to be concentrating on the intended outcome. another way to activate further spellcasting is to play a short melody; this builds up a reservoir of magic within the instrument that can then be dispersed at will. not pictured: a single note can also trigger a basic control spell ( ironically referred to as puppeteering ) which allows the user to control the basic movements of the target. offense attacks — striking slightly more complex chords gives the user soundwave manipulation abilities, the energy from which can be transmuted into physical attacks, usually of the slashing variety, which can pierce/cut a target. weather manipulation — this is more accurately control of air specifically; casting a spell of this nature actively changes the natural properties of the air including surrounding objects, && can alter weight/gravity, create wind/cloud-like manifestations, && lightning/explosives.
other than that, please enjoy these episode parallels :)
