I realized I hadn't posted an audio sample from this version yet so here you go! You can definitely hear some Joshua in there which is promising. Hopefully this encourages you to download LyingBard and give it a shot.

Just to recap for those new around here, this TTS is trained on a much smaller dataset and with a much worse model than LyreBird actually used, so it sounds simliar but differentce. One day I'd like to take another crack at this and see if I can get something that sound just like the real deal, but that'll have to wait.

Suki backstory headcanons!

Bc Bryke gave us nothing and I’m really pissed about it today

-Asuka Fubai was born in the lower ring of Ba Sing Se.

-Her father was an anti-Dai Li rebel, which unsurprisingly got him killed when Asuka was four.

-Her mother provided for them for a few years, but eventually she died as well.

-For a while Asuka lived on the streets in the lower ring, narrowly avoiding the Dai Li and barely surviving.

-One day when she was eight, she snuck onto a train to hide from the Dai Li. What Asuka didn’t know was that the train was headed out of town.

-One thing came to the other, and Asuka found herself in Kyoshi Island, in a little village called Takemu.

-She was just old enough to join the village’s faction of Kyoshi Warriors, which she did quickly because it meant food.

-When Asuka saw the statue of Kyoshi in the middle of town, she knew she’d made the right choice. She felt a connection with the statue, even if she wasn’t sure why.

-Eventually she got close with her fellow warriors, who nicknamed her Suki.

-Her closest friend on the island is another warrior named Akime. They’re as different as day and night, but they’ve known each other for as long as she’s been called Suki, if not longer.

-Suki doesn’t like to admit it, but she loves leading training with the younger girls. “If they knew I was soft on them,” she tells Akime, “they wouldn’t listen to me.”

-Putting on makeup for battle or training is one of her favorite things to do with Akime.

-Every year in winter, the Kyoshi Warriors lead a festival in honor of Kyoshi’s birthday. The warriors’ leader gets to run the festival, and Suki got to do it just before the Gaang got to the island. She’s loyal to her island and her people, sure, but she never wants to do it again because festivals are exhausting.

-Speaking of loyalty, Suki is almost fanatically loyal to Kyoshi and her legacy. Akime thinks it’s kind of silly, but in Suki’s eyes, Kyoshi is the reason she isn’t dead in the streets of the Lower Ring right now.

-This loyalty extends to Aang, who she’s willing to protect with her life. That’s why she was so willing to fight for Appa in s2e16. They do develop a friendly relationship, but for a while she can’t see him as anything other than the reincarnation of the woman she so adores.

-This becomes problematic when Aang is attacked by a lingering group of Ozai supporters, whick Suki doesn’t hesitate to suppress on her own. She’s grievously injured, but continues to fight until they’ve all run away. (This is a Kyoshi Warrior principle that came from Rangi, unsurprisingly.)

-Aang and Sokka are NOT happy that she was so reckless. She tries to explain to them that keeping your best foot forward until the end is taught to warriors since their first day. Aang manages to convince Suki to be a little more careful in the future, but she only takes his advice because he’s the avatar.

-At some point, Sokka tells Suki that he’s bi. He’s expecting her to make a big deal of it, but queerness is so normalized on Kyoshi Island (for obvious reasons) that she doesn’t even think of it as something to tell anyone. She does appreciate his courage in coming out to her, though.

Why Nothing Sounds Quite Like LyreBird

Fans of RTVS may remember Joshua, beautiful baby boy of wayneradiotv. If you're like me, you might be wondering why Joshua stayed dead after LyreBird shut down. Why couldn't he be brought back with a different TTS? The fact is that LyreBird was a product of a very specific time in AI TTS. In March 2017, Google released a paper on Tacotron [1], one of the first AI TTS's with real success. In April 2017, LyreBird began showing off their TTS buisness [2]. As AI bros are wont to do they took that shit. LyreBird is a version of Tacotron. It incorporates technologies that would be published in the next few Tacotron papers [3] including multi-speaker, prosody encoding, and prosody prediction. And in February 2018, Tacotron 2 came out [4].

Tacotron 2 is better in every way. It's faster, better at imitation, and simpler. This makes it much more economical to run and fine-tune on a specific speaker, so every subsequent AI TTS is based off of Tacotron 2.

If you read the paper, Tacotron 1 has a lot of arbitrary and untested choices. It's clear that they published it in a hurry to prove that it could be done, but they hadn't refined it to cut the unnecessary fluff.

This brings me to why I'm writing this. I hope it's clear that I did a lot of research for this. That's because I did my best to recreate LyreBird, named LyingBard, and I've put it up for you to play with here.

You may notice though that it's not quite right. The main reason is that I had to go with a low quality version (reduction factor 5 for those who read the paper). A high quality version would take too long to train with my current set up and I'm almost certain that's what they used.

If I got about $100 in donations, I'm pretty sure I could get a high quality version trained in about a month. It still wouldn't sound exactly the same. Due to the chaotic nature of training a neural network, anything short of getting the actual files off LyreBird (now Descript's) servers won't make it sound exactly the same.

Regardless, LyingBard is here to stay. It's hosted on a free server so I have no reason to take it down. I'll be posting about updates here on this blog. I'm working towards getting custom voices ready at the moment and I've got some ideas for new features and fun toys for the future.
